Cindy McCain will travel to Rwanda next week.

(CNN)— Cindy McCain said Monday she will make a humanitarian trip to Rwanda next week.

The wife of presumptive Republican nominee John McCain plans to spend four days on the ground in the war-torn African nation on a trip organized by the non-partisan ONE campaign, as part of a group visiting USAID health clinics, schools, and an orphanage. Former Senator Tom Daschle will be joining the trip on behalf of Democrat Barack Obama’s campaign.

Daschle and former Senator Bill Frist are co-chairmen of the group’s ONE Vote ‘08 initiative.

Last month, Cindy McCain – who has long been involved with international relief organizations — made a similar journey to Vietnam with Operation SMILE.

Why doesn't Michelle Obama join Cindy McCain on the trip? What organizations to help fight poverty, helping children does Michelle Obama belong too?

Puzzled   July 7th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

How many kids in the U.S. has she helped?

Linda of Atlanta   July 7th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

What has Cindy McCain accomplished during these visits besides getting good pictures? The media continues to say "she has long been involved in these kinds of humanitarian efforts". What has been her precise involvement and what specific accomplishments has she achieved?

Lynn   July 7th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Mrs. McCain has been involved in humanitarian causes for years. I am sure as first lady she would continue to be involved. She will be a very good first lady. I don't know why all of the negative comments on her. So she had a problem with PX drugs, so has a lot of other people.

If she helps so much, then why wouldn't she share her tax records? The only thing she has ever done was ruin the sanctomony of marriage by stealing an ill womans husband. Now the cheating SOB is running for President. With morals like that, I can NEVER vote for McCain, his pathetic leadership skills are icing on the cake.

Calvin "Hussien" Coolidge   July 7th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

It's a shame that so many "Reagan Democrats" would loose their everloving minds if Michele Obama made a trip to Africa.

at least mrs. mccain tries to help others unlike mrs. obama ,whose husband gets earmarks in spending bills thru the senate so it helps michelle and her family. i suppose they have donated quite a lot of money to their church to help fund those hate filled racist anti american sermons.

JP/Michigan-
It's easy to travel all over the world when you have no children and you're worth over a 100 million dallors. Michelle has two children to raise while her husband is in a Presidential campaign. Besides, this article is about Cindy McCain. Why can't you just be glad she finds things to do to fill up her time while she helps others?

A SONGBIRD SANG IN VIETNAM   July 7th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

While it is a noble jester, you and I both know she needs that for tax write off purposes because GWB not only cut taxes for large corporations and the wealthy but extended their tax loopholes allowing them to write off more. That is why John Mcwar supports those rich tax cuts. meanwhile you and I suffer and he still doesn't want to cut OUR taxes like Obama will, he wants to continue the GWB tax cuts. It's scandalous.

Peter E   July 7th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Why is this news again? Is it because CNN doesn't have enough political issues and candidate records to talk about?

Independent-Minded American   July 7th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

How many of such trips did she take before her husband begun running for president?

How does she propose to help these poor people once her husband becomes president? Or will she conveniently forget about them?

This makes for great photos and nothing else.

BTW, there are lots of people starving and living in poverty in Arizona and all over the US of A!

JP/Michigan. Mrs. Obama is busy raising her young children. It's ok if she puts her children before charitable work in foreign countries.

Mrs. McCain raised her children at home in Arizona where she lived across the street from her parents. Mrs. McCain put her children ahead of Washington poltiical scene and charitable work in foreign countries. The McCain children are now adult age.

Perhaps when Mrs. Obama's children are in their 20's she too will involve herself in charitable work in foreign countries.

I guess they don't have too many of them in Michigan but in places like here in Texas, people who are worth $100 + million usually get involved in "socialite" events because they don't have to WORK for a living. I'm not knocking it at all but just know that its a lot easy to get involved in a ton of charities when you have $100+ million and don't have to work for it than when you just paid back student loans a couple years ago like Michelle did. Also please note that Micelle is involved in many charitiy and community organizations and if you would take time out to research you could find out for yourself instead of just throwing out hate speech. She also sits on the board of some charities. Get a clue.

Mickie in PA   July 7th, 2008 4:42 pm ET

If she really cares for the extremely unprivileged children of Rwanda, God bless her.

If she is doing it for other gains but ends up bringing some goods for them and leaves a few of them in a better state than they are now, still God bless her.

Tellin' It Like It Is   July 7th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

Cindy McCain must be running low on her prescription drugs. Isn't that how she got addicted in the past? Stealing prescrition pain killers from her own organization and when she got busted, all she got was a slap on the wrist thanks to Daddy and Hubby? Think I'm lying? It is a fact that is easy to research. Freedom of Information Act is a beautiful thing.

Glad to see so many of you Obama supporters taking the high road. FYI, Cindy McCain has been involved in humanitarian causes for more than 20 years, and has made dozens of trips like this long before the Presidential campaign. She started an organization to bring medical care to impoverished countries in the 1980's. At least she is not just talk like Obama. And where has Michelle been the last 20 years? Wright's anti-American, racist church and yaking it up on The View.

Anita from Arizona   July 7th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

Honestly, who cares what the spouses are doing. They're not running for president.

On a personal note, though. I can relate more to Michelle than Cindy. Michelle and I have a lot more in common in relation to our personal lives growing up and the way we think. So if I based my vote on that, Cindy doesn't have a prayer. Michelle stands next to her man. Cindy stands behind hers.

MMN - Milwaukee WI   July 7th, 2008 5:12 pm ET

Its good a gesture for Cindy but it’s a tad too late. Rwanda happened during Clinton years and Darfur is happening under Bush’s watch.

I am more interested in what policy either of the candidates will have for Africa and in particular what they plan to do with the Darfur region in the Sudan or maybe we can wait for the election in 2016 and the wife of some candidate running for office then will visit the desolate Darfur region after untold human suffering.

Oh please, Cincy Lou is going there for a photo opportunity. She'll smile, pick up the little babies and pretend she likes people of color. Give me a break. We've got your number Miss $700,000. shopping spree gal.

Cindy McCain is a good woman who has done much to benefit the world, even though she is modest about her many contributions and accomplishments. I had to read up on her to find out about all she has done over a lot of years and, as a result, I really admire her.

Was for Hillary - now for McCain!

STILL VOTING FOR HILARY!   July 7th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Good for cindy! I am not a mccain fan, or obama for that matter, but she is doing all the things she needs to be, and I beleive she does it from the heart. She has always been involved in Humanitarian efforts.

Nancy   July 7th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

Stop insulting Africa…

Not Buying It   July 7th, 2008 5:41 pm ET

Why go all the way over there for a photo, Cindy? Just pick up some minority kids on your way to get a pedicure; it will save time and money.

LOL, Cindy said she's been working on her charity for about 27 years, around the same time John McSame ran for office. She's not fooling anyone–she's plastic and fake and phony.

I know given the choice Rwandans would rather see Michelle, not her.

Harry "Hussien" Reems   July 7th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

Somebody said that she's hot? … well not really …

Nell, KY   July 7th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

Better Rwanda than my hometown. I hope she doesn't come here for a photo opt. I don't like her.

Vince   July 7th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Please Cindy, just send the check, stay home. They don't need you over there using them as props.

Sam M.   July 7th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

Wow, the bimbo can actually fly all by herself?

How evolved of her!

Michelle   July 7th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Cindy McCain has been doing charity work all her life–so stop the moronic comments.

JS   July 7th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Cindy McCain has been doing these trips for years, long before her husband ever ran for President. This is never about a photo-op for her at all, people need to get their facts straight. No matter what your politics are, she is doing her thing and now gets to shine a brighter light on these issues…

bern   July 7th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

Probably thinks she can buy Rwanda.

Sherri   July 7th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

I do not support Senator McCain. I do not like Cindy McCain. She was involved with John McCain prior to his divorce from his first wife. I would never trust her, ever. I don't trust him either, as he speaks of family values when the foundation of his family started by shattering his original family.

This is however a good use of a very wealthy woman's time and money. If she can make a difference in Rwanda, great.

Randy   July 7th, 2008 5:53 pm ET

This is admirable, but I would guess it's pretty much pandering. I'm not saying theirs nothing wrong with that, since those people in Rwanda do need any help they can get.

nice   July 7th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

she is going to distribute narcotics

Pam   July 7th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

Cindy: Okay, hand me a little brown baby, so I can take the picture and get out of here.

Aide: But Cindy, I thought you wanted to be here.

Cindy: Are you kidding, there's a pair of Gucci shoes in Italy with my name on it. Wait a minute, I need some phony tears. Okay, you can take my picture, now.

Cindy's Face Is On Too Tight   July 7th, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Dear Marie in CA,

Good riddance, you sound like a Cincy Lou supporter–plastic and phony.

Yeah Vig,

Michelle has the nerve to want to be the first lady, and I have the nerve to VOTE for her husband so that she can be.

Michelle Obama, my next beautiful first lady.

Al   July 7th, 2008 6:00 pm ET

Spouses should have no impact on a reasonable person's vote - Abraham Lincoln's wife (and mother) were crazy, he turned out fine - methinks.

Besides, some of the finest wives have married horrible men (not saying McCain is "horrible" but it proves the point that we vote only for one president, not two).

Lesley   July 7th, 2008 6:00 pm ET

What about charitable work here in the USA? And what's this about Budweiser selling to a foreign owner? How does that help this economy?

Leah DiMarco, Texas   July 7th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

Why do they keep sending her overseas? Why hasn't she done some 'good-works photo-ops' here in the USA? There are many people here in the USA living in poverty - let's see her do something here in the USA for Americans. Let's see the press interview her and spin her words like they have with Michelle Obama!

People are now asking why there are so many nasty remarks about Barbie's grandmother.

Let me see………maybe people are fed up with the way YOU all treat Michelle Obama. What goes around comes around.

Michelle didn't steal her husband from a sick woman, she didn't steal drugs, she didn't steal recipes. Can the same be said about Barbie's granny. I think not.

I understand that you may not know how the voting thing works so let me help you. Hillary is not on the ticket. If you write her name in her still will not win. Your vote WILL NOT COUNT. Hillary is a Democrat, she will be voting for Obama herself!
Who is also a Democrat? If Obama Loses this election because of mean spirited bitter people like you, our economy will get worst. And you people will be the blame. Get the Picture! Got over it!

John you also need to remember while you are traveling around the globe that there are elections going on here and you aren't doing so well.

Jason   July 7th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

For all of you haters she has been doing humanitarian missions for over 20 years it is not something she STARTED doing when he started running for President. IDIOTS read and learn before you post and lie.

Is this were Michelle Obama travelling to Rwanda what would Obama supporters have to say about her I wonder?

DM, Arlington TX for Barack Obama 08   July 7th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Wow, she showing off that she has the money and the resources to do what ewver she want's when ever she want's what a lady. Why do she make a trip to West Virgina an show off her wealth there or New Orleans they would really be impress with her money her in the US.

Now, is her company about to layoff 600 to 1000 employees? Can they take the trip with her?

American   July 7th, 2008 6:17 pm ET

Why are Mr. and Mrs McFlip Flop always out of the country. Do they not realize that americans are suffering from the poor economy here as a result of his twin Bush? Try focusing on America McLames.

G M   July 7th, 2008 6:17 pm ET

Four days in Rwanda is site seeing. You can't really do or see much of anything in that short time. I have been to the neighboring
country of Uganda and those countries are so big and everything is so far apart you can only go one or two places in a day. I spent 17 days there and traveled with a local professional driver in a modern SUV from the college, while doing my research and only visited a few sections of the country and attended a few functions. Traveling alone took hours.

Another old white woman for Obama   July 7th, 2008 6:23 pm ET

I just recalled who she reminds me of: Cruella DeVille.
Yes has always been involved in affairs. Humanitarian (She stole drugs from the poor) and extra-marital (John left his crippled wife for her). Charity begins at home Cindy.

Scott   July 7th, 2008 6:24 pm ET

She looks like a bat.

Wendy   July 7th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

I think she should get an ear tuck before she goes. She kind of looks like Dumbo…Something just doesn't look right with her. I think it might be one too may tucks and pulls. I only hope I can grow up to have half the plastic surgery. What a wonderful role model for all the young woman through out the world. Long live the Botox!

Shannon   July 7th, 2008 6:33 pm ET

There are many, many, blighted and poverty stricken areas right here in the U S of America. Why isn't Cindy McCain visiting any of those areas right here in her own country? I thought John McCain was running for president of the United States, not the world.

Also, I think people like Cindy McCain visit other countries because you don't have to actually do anything or accomplish anything, you just have to go there. Whereas here in our country, she would actually have to accomplish something or prove that she had made a difference.

Who knows, maybe she will charge $732,000 on her credit card for them, and not just spend the money on herself.

Cheryl   July 7th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Don't forget those credit cards, CIndy….

McCain=the draft   July 7th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

Hey, Cindy is worth 100 million. She doesn't have to worry about going to work, so she's free to globe trot. I hope she's using her own jet. The McCains are more interested in helping the people of other countries. This elite couple cannot identify with the average american, that's for sure!

@ Jason, I agree. Too bad there isn't an IQ test required for voting. None of the Obama bloggers here would be eligable to vote.

HG   July 7th, 2008 7:02 pm ET

Hopefully she stays there. Its seems she likes to help those around the world when there are many in need here. We dont need a President or First Lady putting the needs of any other country first besides ours. We are already seeing the affects from this one.

David   July 7th, 2008 7:03 pm ET

Cindy McCain,

You don't look human, lay off the makeup. You look like the incognito alien in the movie Mars Attacks.

Cindy's Not Smarter Than Us   July 7th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Who really cares what this opiate theiving crazy beer baroness is doing. Her hubby will bail her out if she gets into trouble anyway.

Cinderella Is A Phoney   July 7th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

She can go to Rwanda, but do we HAVE to hear about it. It's a fake, phoney trip so that the public can believe she really cares about people–uh huh, she doesn't. Yes, I know she wants us to think that she does, but we don't.

We wouldn't believe you're going to Rwanda for humanitarian reasons if our lives depended on it. Oh wait, we do depend on it, and that's why we're voting for Barack, not your husband.

Matt, Canoga Park   July 7th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

CNN censors. Why is it ok to mock and belittle the McCains on your blogs but to do the same with Obama and their supporters and you get your comment cleared out?

Say all you want about McCain and his past but bring up Baraks drug abuse and get censored.

Could this have something to do with Obama paying you to have only good articles about him. Please don't ever call your "news" organization unbaised. You have become far worse than Fox ever was.

stacy   July 7th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

forget her drug sins and transgretions, woman is meek and sophisticated unlike other wife, rich but caring.

Brad - California   July 7th, 2008 7:18 pm ET

And why is Cindy McCain newsworthy? You're going to give your OLD man a boost and it isn't gonna work. Americans are astute enough to know that you don' tgive a $#%& about what happens in Rwanda. Go back to your beauty salon and designer clothes.

EDW   July 7th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

You ask what Michelle has done with her life?
Simply being a faithful wife, great mother, and a role model is what she has done however that is not all. She is a very smart woman and has contributed a lot to her community. She has done many charitable works as well, without the trust fund of an beer heiress.

Concerned   July 7th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

Wow she really needs a touch up…Mrs McBush better watch out, old McWalkingCain cheated on his first wife with Cindy for a younger woman..she looks a little long in the tooth now….thats why he's always traveling.

Americans should be proud to have Cindy McCain in such a position to represent this great Nation. There is no way that the McCains will not end up in The White House this November. Any person on this board who makes cracks about Senator McCain and his first wife has not read the true facts. Enlighten yourself, and READ! How many kids in the U.S. has she helped?

More than Michelle Obama, the cheapskate that donates less than 1% of her income, or less than the average American that makes 50k per year. Cindy McCain was doing things like this before she entered the public eye, so its a lot less likely to be pandering.

Cindy McCain has an adopted child… more than many of us could claim. So what if she went to rehab for painkillers? I'd rather a First Lady that overcame a PRESCRIPTION drug addiction than a President that snorted Cocaine and smoked Marijuana.
