The Obama campaign is launching a new evangelical initiative.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – A conservative Christian activist group said Monday that it is dropping plans to sue Barack Obama’s presidential campaign over the name of its new program aimed at courting evangelical and Catholic young people because the campaign has told them it will re-name the initiative.

The Obama campaign did not immediately confirm the move.

The Home School Legal Defense Association, which launched grassroots group “Generation Joshua” in 2004, sent the Obama campaign a cease-and-desist letter last month over the decision to call its own outreach effort to evangelical young people — which includes blogs, concerts, and house parties — the "Joshua Generation Project."

“Generation Joshua” provided heavy grassroots assistance in key swing states for President Bush’s re-election effort last cycle. Founder and conservative activist Michael Farris also authored a 2005 book that included the words in its title.

“We’re pleased the Obama campaign has acknowledged our trademark rights,” Farris said in a statement released Monday.

The name is drawn from the biblical account of how Joshua’s generation, which followed the one that fled Egypt with Moses, led the Israelites into the Promised Land. Obama referenced the story in a 2007 speech.

Mr. Independent Voter………….Your spill or comment was a heap of crap. Although typical of those filled with hate. The more I've listen to Independents, like CNN Lou Dobbs, the more I understand independents have nothing to offer but complaints. Just complain about everything and everyone else and never offer any real solutions. What a coward’s way to stand for nothing, but complain about everything. Sort of reminds me of another complainer without solutions. The pill swallowing conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh.

Amerika the beautiful   July 7th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Hillary ran against an unqualified, inexperienced young person. Just because he was half black, that audacity to run anyway, made HER a divisive racist.

Obama ran against a highly qualified, experienced and capable person. Since she was middle aged, white, and a woman… THAT would make him a divisive, reverse-racist, sexist, misogynist.

SO… why is the BEST and most qualified candidate now stumping for the lightweight?

Problems out there AmeriKKKKKKKA?

"begin impeachment proceeding now" - For what going to a war that 80+% of Americans wanted to go to, that over 90% of dems voted for?

Or are you impeaching him because he let the left take over the power in America and is destroying the economy… and keep voting for the war by sending money to fund the war.

If anything we should get ready to impeach Obama now, before he destroys the country with his flip flop on everything attitude.. Obama is going to be far far worse the Bush…

Who stirs up the fear?   July 7th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

I too, am tired of the fearmongering by the Obama campaign who claims to disdain such tactics and ploys.

If the Obama cultists are opposed to " fearmongering" then why is it THEY who continue to post comments like, ' if they choose to vote for McCain it may be their last choice, McCain will do away with women's rights, They will overturn Roe (not Rowe) vs Wade, They will reinstate the draft, They will be in Iraq for 100 yrs' etc….etc.

These are the worst fearmongering ploys of them all.

People have the right to vote for who THEY see fit, not the way the Obama camp WANTS. Stop forcing people to vote YOUR way. Like the hate in the primary…it will backfire and do damage to Obama, not advance him.

Roe vs Wade isn't going anywhere. And, if it does, that will be the fault of the newbies and the haters who put the screws to Hillary. And… us old bitter feminists who worked For Roe vs Wade, we are NOT the ones who will suffer from its overturning… think about THAT. So stop blogging that nonsense.

A conservative court? Sandra Day O'Conner turned out to be just super. Again us old racist white bitter blue collar and feminist democrats… we won't suffer much from that. But…It might teach the young and the newbies to be careful when they employ a strategy of hate to divide the party by stooping to vile and filthy insults, vitriolic name-calling and race baiting. It Might inspire all of you to campaign fairly and without bigotry, sexism and hatred in the future.

A draft? Same scenario as to WHO will suffer and who will be responsible because of the nature of the corrupt Democratic primary . The democrats are more likely to be the party to reinstate a draft- it is, after all a MORE democratic approach to defense of our freedoms.

The 100 yr war was an intentional and obvious twisting of McCains words and intent. He was referring to a post- combat pressence just like the Marshal plan after WWII.

So… fear mongers and haters for Obama- YOU will be to blame for any and all setbacks- by demanding that Obama be installed as nominee. And by using the race card, bigotry, insults, and hate to achieve that end. You played dirty and recklessly divided the party with your name-calling and debasing of fellow democrats.

Now… Obama MAY lose… and you will be the ones responsible and the ones to blame for it. ACCEPT IT…. You can not force and fix elections in the USA. Even THIS year, we will not allow the only Democrat left standing, to win… if he cheated.

Marv...   July 7th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Wow!!! Those names are significantly different. How petty of that CHRISTIAN organization. Way to go fellow Christians. Put pettiness over lifting up the name of Christ. That's how to allow your conservative agenda to cloud or take your eyes away from the Mark which is Jesus Christ. The Lord must be pleased with your pettiness. The angels in Heaven are singing joyfully because of your accomplishment of taking ownership of God. Only you can allow others to invoke the name of the Savior or names held within the Bible. We forget how mighty and powerful the name of Evangelical Constrictive Christian has become. I'm sure it ranks up there with the name of the Jesus Himself.

You must be so very proud of this great accomplishment.

Liar Obama   July 7th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Why is Obama pandering to the Evangelicals anyway… and trying to trick them to his site, rather than the original organization they are looking for, by naming his new organization almost identically?

No… inverting the two key words doesn't make it alright- it is unethical, though not "illegal".

And this pandering for votes and wanting to expand faith based funding is absurd.

We need a clear separation of Church and state.

Stay clear of the Obama.

Obama remorse   July 7th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

Just another sneaky campaign tactic by Obama-
Try to fool evangelicals looking for the previous organization into finding Obama's new organization, by inverting the two words.

An Obvious ploy to steer evangelicals to Obama's site.

With the publicity, people have now been made aware of the ploy… so it will no longer fool so many… so now Obama will just change the name.

People… those are the slick, legal but unethical ways that Obama keeps using to disadvantage and eliminate his opponents.

He is the dirtiest, slickest, sleaziest candidate of all time.

I think I hear Jesus weeping.

Rudy NYC   July 7th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

I guess the Obama team didn't want an issue out something that was not really an issue. Why spend money on a lawsuit that had no merit?

There are churches in my area that have their own internal programs named Joshua Generation. Obama's campaign was an attempt to unite such groups. I wonder if this conservative group is aware of that these groups have existed long before their politically motivated group was formed.

Rudy NYC   July 7th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

I had thought this would happen. I was surprised the suit was not thrown out of court as frivolous. It seemed as if the group felt that they owned names that are in the public domain. Or at the least, felt they were in charge of how biblical related names can and cannot be used.

mk   July 7th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

If they would have sued, they would have completely lost any interest in their target group of young people. What kind of 'Christian' group threatens to sue over a similar (but not the same) name? There are only so many Joshuas, Johns, etc. in the Bible to be used as names for the entire world. They know this - they were just looking to stamp their disapproval on Obama in any way they can. Sounds like mind control to me..

Sherri   July 7th, 2008 3:23 pm ET

You would think they (Christian Activists) would be happy to have young people of their faith involved and engergized regardless of the name of the group. Isn't it time we all work together for a better America and world?

Go Obama!

Chris K   July 7th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

At least the conservative group wasn't suing him for mentioning faith. They usually think they own the idea.

I heard on Fox News that Karl Rove invented religion actually… although that doesn't seem quite right to me. I did hear he personally baptized W. though (to help get him elected).

Wake up people! The republican party DOES NOT hold a monopoly on faith or values. All Americans share this. It's great to see Obama reaching out to these faith based groups. Together we can all build a better America for everyone.

Jason L   July 7th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

I wish these ultra religious folks would stay out of politics. I am sick of the Repulsican party shoving religion down America's throat every chance they get like Bush's illegal Faith Based Programs (violation of the 1st amendment). I guess since Obama is trying to reach out to everyone in this country through faith (whatever you believe) the Republican'ts must sue for HIM using their play book.. There is a reason why we have separation of church and state in the constitution, It's so government doesn't force religion upon anyone. .

Christine, There is NO Christ, No Jesus, and you can't prove he existed. There is ZERO physical proof of it's existence. IF he was so great, why is there no cross? no nails? no crown of thorns? no hair saved of your precious savior? There are pharaohs who after 4000 years still have hair and skin in their coffins and their bodies preserved, and who are more revered than this fictitious person. I have read and studied the bible, grew up in a christian school, yet noone can prove his being on earth! Religious scholars will say, if it's in the bible, then its true. The bible was written 2 or 3 centuries after so-called Jesus' arriving on earth. If he was able to resurrect himself once, why hasn't he done so again, or is he still alive or did he die again as an impostor?

Joshua   July 7th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Now how are they going to take something from the bible and copyright it….the Joshua generation is from the bible, not this group that wanted to sue Obama….and clearly the names are different…but I guess that is more important for this so called "christian" group to stress than to be happy that another person wants to do something to extol the glory of God. Some "christians" you all are!!

Fairfax Voter   July 7th, 2008 3:02 pm ET

Good Harvard lawyers like Obama are smart enough to know when it's worth going to court and when it's not.

The Joshua Generation was a great name that recalled Obama's own speech at the 40th anniversary of the Selma protest, and the story of Joshua has been used for religious youth outreach long before the home-school defense league came along–it's a perennial.

That said, why go to court when you can just pick a different name? Smart call and an appropriate response to the HSDL's concerns.

As for Mike Farris, he is the former lieutenant governor of Virginia who believed the Wizard of Oz (the book) should not be included in public school libraries because it promotes satanism. Not exactly Mr. Mainstream.

Shame on you, evangelicals!!!!!

Was a Democrat-Now an Independent   July 7th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

My nickname for Barack Obama is "line lifter," as he has pretty much stolen all his ideas from other candidates, most especially the candidate I did and still do support, Hillary Clinton.

SalBal   July 7th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

'yes we can' so what's wrong with more plagiarism?"

This is so stupid to call this plagiarism. How can one claim they own something like #Yes We Can#. It is even more pathetic than Beetles and Apple over #Apple# trademark dispute which was settled in 2007.

I get absolutely amazed how in, the USA lawyers make pots of money for these kinds of cases. It is a disgraceful waste of money and time when both could be put their efforts or money into better use - like advancing technologies to combat global warming or feeding the hungry around the world. Actually this is not just happening in US. It also happens in UK but the courts over here are a little more dismissive of stupid cases like this.

An UK perspective

LT for Obama   July 7th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Do your research people, Yes We Can is a slogan that Obama has been using for over 10 years since his days in the State Senate.

Jim   July 7th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

I love how conservatives have trademarked religion. Like I, as a Democrat, don't have the right to be religious? Well, when I think of Jesus Christ, I don't think of bombs dropping in Iraq and Afganistan. I'm sorry, but the things the Republican Party stand for are as un-Christian as it gets. I'm pretty confident Jesus would be apalled at the Bush Administration's track record. WWJB? Who Would Jesus Bomb? Stop falling for the Republican fear mongering and war waging.

Veteran in Kansas   July 7th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

Isn't it sad how religion keeps interfering in the politics of a secular nation where all religions are suppost to be able to "practise" their religions without government interference. It a two edged sword, keep government out of religion and keep religion out of politics.

Paul   July 7th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

It is typical for some overzealous fundamentalists to think that only they are allowed to extract a name or phrase from the Bible. They need to get over themselves!

MMN - Milwaukee WI   July 7th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Of course Obama is going to end the war in Iraq. But it seems the GOP wants a say in it to make sure the pull out fails and they can say we told you about the DEMs. Obama has said it time and again that, “He’ll be as careful pulling out as careless as we were going in”. Remember Colin Powell asked Bush before the invasion, “After Sadam is gone what will you do with 27 million people?” and Bush Brushed it off think they’ll adore him as their liberator. The only thing the GOP can hope for is a careless pull out because they care the LEAST about America.

There are too many distractions, at one time they called Obama naïve for not offering details on how to pull. Now that he’s saying that he’ll be careful on how he goes about the pull and pull out it will be the GOP starts screaming flip-flop. Funny how the GOP spins away from who they really are by flinging it on the DEMs. Remember how Bush/GOP branded Kerry a coward in 2004 and we all knew who served in Vietnam while the other was being protected by rich daddy in some Texas reserve something rather?

GOP it’ll not work this time around, because we have entered the “Politics Unusual” this season around.

Ms. Sims   July 7th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

@Ron- democrat turned independent via HILLARY then obama….and McCain is anything NEW! He is just a repackaged version of Bush. And Hillary was taking ideas from McCain i.e. the gas tax holiday! Pls both of them tried to take the Obama's change theme and use it.

And to those claiming he stole Yes We Can… if you watched the report that said he got the phrase Yes We Can from somebody else you would have took the time to notice that he only start using it AFTER Obama did…

Poor Independent Voter…can't find any thing to debate so you keep bring up Rev. Wright…newsflash people paying $4/gal for gas and loosing their homes don't care about that. If that's the only argument you'll have against Obama for the next 4 months he's definately going to win…P.S. Keating 5, see how easy it is to get off topic!

David   July 7th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Obama is a used car salesman who will say whatever he thinks the particular audience he is speaking in front of wants to hear. "Yes we can" Perhaps they can finish the thought, yes we can what?

Gary   July 7th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Part of the problem with this great country is that too many people are ready to sue at the drop of a hat making an over worked juducial system have to deal with an issue that should never have been brought to the courts in the first place! People really need to lighten up and worry about the "BIG PICTURE" issues that affect all of us and don't sweat the small stuff!!!!

The last thing Obama wants is responsible parents home schooling their children without a dictated government oversight and curriculum. If the government can't brainwash your children–they won't fit in.

Perhaps one of those children–independantly educated at home–will be able to become President and make change–that reflects the nations values and not the politicians for a real change.

Maggie Muggins From Selwyn   July 7th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

All this fuss because people just can't accept the fact when you die you simply cease to exist.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to realize man created god not the other way around. All interested parties have to do is a little research to reach a logical conclusion.

In any event I don't have a problem with people believing in anything they want providing it doesn't interfere or hurt anyone else's quality of life. Too bad the majority of religous cults didn't feel the same way!

acs   July 7th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

All property belongs to the people. Time for democrats and fellow progressives to take from the rich and corporations and help the people.

The motion notice did not have any merit to begin with and was in all probability going to be thrown out of Court.

No one has monopoly on religion and religious beliefs play an important part of our society; therefore it is understandable that Obama would seek the support of good evangelicals.

Apparantly if the name Joshua is used the GOPites will sue. Sure the Obama team should have 'Googled' the name so everyone would undestand that this is 'owned' by the grand old party. And picked something else..
How petty of them.. What is important is what they are trying to do for the positive outreach to youth. Apparantely youth should only think Republican …
some day they might get a life…

John in Columbus Ohio   July 7th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

I think that may have been entirely intentional.

That is, I think the Obama campaign picked the name knowing that the HSLDA would want them to change it. Then, when challenged by the HSLDA, the campaign apologizes for the mistake and goes along with the HSLDA, letting them demonstrate to the HSLDA that they're gracious and respectful of the HSLDA's position. Now the HSLDA will be viewing the Obama campaign in a more favorable light, and they aren't going to put up any serious vocal opposition to Obama's candidacy.

It's a possibility anyway.

Veteran for McCain   July 7th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Democrats are so IGNORANT!!!!! The organization dropped the lawsuit because the Obama campaign agreed to drop the name upon realizing they were using someone elses trademark. How does it always come back against McCain? You guy's are pissing me off already. Obama will lose in November and I can't wait to get on this blog and read your comments then!!!!

"They should sue Bush", are you kidding me? IGNORANT DEMS!

Johnny Mac is bad cheese gone worse   July 7th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

To all the idiots who say that 75,000 showed up tp see Obama in Portand because of a rock concert— NOT! I was there. There was a band that played a couple songs - not headliners- for about 20 minutes of the 3-5 hour wait. If you were there you'd know we were there for Obama! Get a life!

Chris from NY   July 7th, 2008 1:33 pm ET

What's in a name except it's for a good cause. God of Obama is the God of the Republicans even though they (the Republicans) will like to think that they have more claim to God than anyone else. Thank God that He ( God) can't be seen. He would have a lot to say to the Republicans. One of which is I am the God of all flesh. He is the God of the universe. No Christian has more claim to God than any other.

"Change" this and "change" that.

This whole "change" farce is sickening.

Obama isn't on track for anything. He is all over the place.

"change" and "unity."

Obama = Bush 3

Enlightened Voter   July 7th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

How can someone steal a name from the bible? So the conservatives are the only ones entitled to use those names? What morons? And he did not steal the name, he was using an entirely different usage of it.

CNN = Jerry Springer of news   July 7th, 2008 1:28 pm ET

I guess Christianity is no longer a bi-partisan religion. If a Democratic group wants to use biblical references, that is not OK, but it is OK for the religious right to use these references. Makes me want to change my religious affilitation because I sure am not changing my political affiliation to one that supports wars, which is very un-christian.

After the way you blew the "Death of the Pound" … that's fistbump to most of the country …. I would expect CNN would not be so hasty in putting half a story on this blog.

Our scrutiny of your journalistic integrity has been heightened CNN.

Ms Sinderbrand, I think you've taken editorial license to phase your sentence as … "The Obama campaign did not immediately confirm the move."

This seems to suggest that they have a responsibility to comment on every bit of potential conjecture by a reporter or the McCain camp.

Your sentence should read, " I (CNN) was not able to obtain a comment from the Obama camp but we didn't want some other web blog to mention this before us and so we ran with it prematurely."

Name it whatever you like, Barry.

It's still a problem of church and state. Say, Mr. "Constitutional Scholar," just what WON'T you do to get the job?

Keep those churches in line by giving them money, right? And meet with them, be seen with them, go to their conventions. What does Reverend Wright plan to do with his payoff? Fire up more young "Christians?" I noticed how very Christian his congregation was on those tapes. "Faith." Right.

I guess the good Reverend will get the bucks he wants to start a new version of the same church in his local retirement community. The cost of his silence since he was making you look bad.
