Conservative group drops plans to sue Obama team

The Obama campaign is launching a new evangelical initiative.

The Obama campaign is launching a new evangelical initiative.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – A conservative Christian activist group said Monday that it is dropping plans to sue Barack Obama’s presidential campaign over the name of its new program aimed at courting evangelical and Catholic young people because the campaign has told them it will re-name the initiative.

The Obama campaign did not immediately confirm the move.

The Home School Legal Defense Association, which launched grassroots group “Generation Joshua” in 2004, sent the Obama campaign a cease-and-desist letter last month over the decision to call its own outreach effort to evangelical young people - which includes blogs, concerts, and house parties - the "Joshua Generation Project."

“Generation Joshua” provided heavy grassroots assistance in key swing states for President Bush’s re-election effort last cycle. Founder and conservative activist Michael Farris also authored a 2005 book that included the words in its title.

“We’re pleased the Obama campaign has acknowledged our trademark rights,” Farris said in a statement released Monday.

The name is drawn from the biblical account of how Joshua’s generation, which followed the one that fled Egypt with Moses, led the Israelites into the Promised Land. Obama referenced the story in a 2007 speech.

  3. Obama is the anti-messiah

I figured the reason that Obama chose the name Joshua is because it means savior. Barack Obama is a legend in his own mind.

I'd expect more from so-called "Christians". Christ is love! I'm a Christian and wouldn't think of something so repulsive! Don't worry Obama; you've got REAL Christians praying for you!

Nothing that Obama has done or said – including "yes, we can" – is original. He's such a sleazy opportunist who would do or say anything to advance himself politically.

  10. Barack Obama is Our 44th president! YES WE CAN !

I am glad they came to their senses and realized this is a lost cause...nothing what-so-ever to pursue.

It's time for REAL change in Washington, it's time for Barack Obama for president !

Name it whatever you like, Barry.

It's still a problem of church and state. Say, Mr. "Constitutional Scholar," just what WON'T you do to get the job?

Keep those churches in line by giving them money, right? And meet with them, be seen with them, go to their conventions. What does Reverend Wright plan to do with his payoff? Fire up more young "Christians?" I noticed how very Christian his congregation was on those tapes. "Faith." Right.

I guess the good Reverend will get the bucks he wants to start a new version of the same church in his local retirement community. The cost of his silence since he was making you look bad.

After the way you blew the "Death of the Pound" ... that's fistbump to most of the country .... I would expect CNN would not be so hasty in putting half a story on this blog.

Our scrutiny of your journalistic integrity has been heightened CNN.

Ms Sinderbrand, I think you've taken editorial license to phase your sentence as ... "The Obama campaign did not immediately confirm the move."

This seems to suggest that they have a responsibility to comment on every bit of potential conjecture by a reporter or the McCain camp.

Your sentence should read, " I (CNN) was not able to obtain a comment from the Obama camp but we didn't want some other web blog to mention this before us and so we ran with it prematurely."

As a Christian, I dont see how one would side with McCain over Obama. McCain isnt a man of God. He's a neanderthal and im beginning to believe so are my Republican brothers. A bunch of lost sheep. Republicans stand for hate, aggression. Something that Jesus dint stand for.

yes, as the story of Joshua belongs to all that read the Old Testament, they must have realized they don’t own it 🙂

"Generation Joshua" and "Joshua Generation Project" – while similar....does not constitute trademark infringement – I would think that any group with asimilar goal of bringing people of faith in to vote would be a good thing....yet another example of a legal system that is running amuck....anyone know what caused the fall of the Roman Empire.....yep....lawyers....everyone sues everyone else.....because they became a society of entitlists...(sound familar?)

They should sue Bush and his administration.

Or, please, begin impeachment proceeding now.

A precedent or an example has to be set for the like of Bush repubs.

isn't it sad how obama continually steals ideas from other people.the man as no credibility whatsoever yet it goes to show how far some of the Americans have fallen who still follow him. he keeps them looking forward so they can't see what he promised yesterday is not the same as what he is saying to-day sad sad sad
