Mike DuHaime ran Giuliani's presidential campaign.
Mike DuHaime ran Giuliani's presidential campaign.

(CNN) - In one of his first moves to centralize control of McCain's political organization, Steve Schmidt has tapped Rudy Giuliani's former campaign manager, Mike DuHaime, to be McCain's new political director, a top campaign adviser tells CNN.

Until last week, McCain had no political director at headquarters — highly unusual for a general election campaign. Mccain's campaign instead relied on 11 regional campaign managers — a structure many Republicans in and outside of the McCain campaign, including Schmidt, considered unworkable.

After formally taking control of the political operation last week, Schmidt decided to put a political director in place to oversee the state and regional operations.

Duhaime went to work as an adviser to McCain at headquarters not long after Giuliani dropped his primary bid.

Okay, this is the guy we want at the controls for our country? He had four months jump start to get his campaign together, and he's just doing this? This guy can't even run a campaign? How anyone can call Obama Nobama baffles me. At least he has a structured campaign, whether you agree with him or not.

saga4obama   July 7th, 2008 8:23 am ET

you mean to say that John McCain had 3 months on Barack Obama and he still could not get it right? i guess thats why McCain finished 894th out of 899 at the Naval Academy, his bad judgment is probably a contributing factor to the 6 planes McCain crashed. i wonder if John has enough sense to throw his "Hispanic Outreach Director" Juan Hernandez under the bus like he is doing so many of the others who worked so hard to get him where he is, i mean Hernandaz proclaimed in his book: "the illegal alien invaders he urges to become settlers in the USA. Hernandez believes all Mexicans and Mexican-Americans in the USA should become dual citizens and consider themselves Mexicans first, "to the 8th generation." He believes there should be no border at all between Mexico and the USA, ever. "
perhaps McCain can hire Vicki L. Iseman, she has had a great "working relationship with him in the past.
or perhaps he can ask Feingold to help him again since: "His McCain-Feingold bill has destroyed much of the rights of people to take part in the political process the way they see fit. This bill remains unConstitutional and a major affront to the First Amendment protections on the right of free speech."
when will people get the fact that John McCain is a puppet, a tool used by Big Oil and special interest groups?
WHAT ELSE DOES JOHN HAVE TO HIDE?

DuHaime….sounds French to me. Aren't they socialists? Don't Republicans denounce them as cowards and incompetents? What church does he attend? Does his wife use botox? Is she proud of her country…whatever that is? Does he have any experience? Is he too old? Too white? Is his middle name "Bin Laden"?

We need to know these things. Otherwise, this election campaign could degenerate into a discussion of the issues and we can't be havin' that!

Patrick Henry, Fort Myers   July 7th, 2008 8:55 am ET

He can centralize all he wants.

Just as Obama has turned over his campaign to the "whiz-kids" of the DNC. The problem with both candidates isn't their appeal so much as their similarity regarding essential ideals of moderately conservative Americans regarding their government.

More doesn't mean better!! You can change things without creating a new agency, department or program!!!
Both are similar in that to date: no conversations nor agenda items exist addressing reigning in government growth, costs, duplicationm ir redundancy. Neither is willing to consider even small reductions in the armed services or foreign aid budgets–or meaningful changes to social security and human services programs.

We are tired of paying ever increasing taxes that are funneled into untested but costly new programs–while they continue to ignore shoring up healthcare, social security, and infrastructure. BOTH candidates agree these needs require attention–but neither has the guts or vision to be a good chief executive and rechannel our tax dollars from other bloated or unecessary government agencies or departments. In the end they only differ by miniscule degrees. This is not the change we desire!!!

dEMOBRAT   July 7th, 2008 9:01 am ET

That's okay, looks as though Obama is turning into the typical politician with his fancy play on words- who would have guessed!

In the article below you can see some foot work, ON IRAQ,"If you look at our position, it's been very consistent. The notion that we have to get out carefully has been a consistent position," he said.

Then Obama backs off the orginally strong statement above by saying this, "So a lot of these statements that I've made have been entirely consistent," Obama added.

Which one is it Obama, a lot of them or all of them?

I love politics :)

All the political directors in the world won't help the Republicans this time around since their agenda won't waver from the Bush policies.

The problem is the Conservative ideology is the problem and their only defense is to label the other candidate as a Liberal. Facts are Conservatism has simply evolved into the rich getting richer and poor getting poorer philosophy.

If the American people look around at other modern societies and the benefits their citizens enjoy and come to realize this is all due to Liberal or Socialist ideals then maybe they have a chance to change their mind set and reap the benefits.

Laidetea   July 7th, 2008 10:58 am ET

QUESTION AND ANSWER

Q: Obama said he would aggressively pursue a campaign finance agreement with his opponent. Did he do so? Why did those efforts fail?

A: Counsel from the two campaigns did meet, but it was immediately clear that an agreement wouldn’t be workable. The idea of an agreement on public financing was to limit the influence of special interests and big donors on the campaign—but after the
McCain campaign decided to manipulate the system, and given that they had already been spending private money on their general election campaign for months, it was readily apparent that an agreement would only serve to give McCain, the RNC, and Republican 527s a leg up.

McCain and the RNC had no intentions of having a honest campaign. Before this years elections ends McCain will have flandered millions of dollars from the public finance system….money that should be use to help rebuild the states that were damaged by the Mississippi River, finish the clean up of New Orleans, more medicine for the sick and poor. McCain is for himself and he's a puppet for the Bushes'.

America we need a president that does care about the people in our great country….Obama is by far the only candidate that truly cares.

Vote Obama

The professional experience of managing Rudy Giuliani's campaign to achieve its unique record (spending nearly $40 Million to get practically nothing!) is exactly the skillset John McCain needs right now to help his campaign gain traction. yikes!   July 7th, 2008 11:16 am ET

More changes………………..after 3 months when will you start campaigning for America's best interest. We all know what
McCain stands for but what about your plans for the future.

Desiree   July 7th, 2008 11:18 am ET

Look how well he managed Giuliani's campaign

T GUY   July 7th, 2008 11:19 am ET

WELL WELL ANOTHER LOSER LIKE RUDY……..TALK TOUGH BUT NOTHING ELSE.

USAF Staff Sergeant   July 7th, 2008 11:20 am ET

It's a bit sad that the only thing McCain related that is news worthy these days is him getting or firing an adviser.

Looking at the picture of this DuHaime character, he'll fit right in at the McCain camp….. he looks rather shady.

Ross in MD   July 7th, 2008 11:20 am ET

Yeah, the guy who ran Giuliani's pathetic excuse of a campaign is the guy I would pick as well…

Obama '08

Foreign observer   July 7th, 2008 11:23 am ET

Now the Bush/Cheney campaign team is complete to do the same they always did….!

fojohnson   July 7th, 2008 11:23 am ET

John MCcain saying Obama words cannot be trusted? He is the one that cannot be trusted because he also flip flop on so many issue than Obama did. And CNN why can't you write about Mccain flip flop? You now concentrate more on Obama's word than MCcain. when survey was done by Bill, the survey showed that MCcain flip flop more than Obama, Why not bring that to your round table. He has not better experience than Obama when it comes to running the country. Yes, he was a military man and has being in the senate for many years what has he do for the country and for his home town. CNN since you claim you are the trusted name in news please do not be bias. I HOPE YOU POST MY COMMENT BECAUSE YOU NEVER DO. Please let him talk about what to do about the country than attack. We need someone to help put the country on track not someone that is not. He worn the nomination a long time and he still did not have an agenda for the economy when will he have one? Why has CNN not reported about that?

Claire (Albany NY)   July 7th, 2008 11:23 am ET

DuHaime managed Rudy's campaign so brilliantly that McCain hires him to manage his??? Great choice, John. Really inspires a voter's confidence in your judgment.

Keith   July 7th, 2008 11:24 am ET

Right, like this is going to work. Obama is going to wipe the floor with McCain come November.

CW4Barak   July 7th, 2008 11:24 am ET

This dummy couldn't help Mr. Liar Rudy Giuliani, how is he going to help McBush!! LAUGH!

New Yorker   July 7th, 2008 11:26 am ET

Good move.

McCain 08

R. Griffith   July 7th, 2008 11:27 am ET

Couldn't you find a worse picture of Mike DuHaime ? Don't we want to compromise the republicans as much as possible? Isn't this CNN?
Please scour through the archives more throughly to find a picture that more resembles what your readers expect? Those sniviling little rat faced snakes that they are? Those who dare to run against Obama! How dare them!

HOUSTON TEXAS   July 7th, 2008 11:29 am ET

Let me ge this right, they are going to use Rudy Giuliani's former campaign manager? HAHahaha… Did they not see what happened to Giuliani's campaign….. I couldn't make this stuff up.

matt   July 7th, 2008 11:32 am ET

so you hire the guy who ran Giuliani's completely failed campaign…Its clear that Rudy actually lost because of a poorly managed campaign. So you hire that guy. I was already voting for Obama, but man, is McCain really in it to win it?

mitchell hussein martin   July 7th, 2008 11:32 am ET

these people are like roaches coming out of the woodwork.

Michael Lorton Virginia   July 7th, 2008 11:33 am ET

Hope he has better luck than Rudy did…….

Mike   July 7th, 2008 11:33 am ET

Yeah, because he did such a bang up job for Rudy.
But, maybe it's because they have a theme in common. Blah, Blah, Blah, 9/11, Blah, Blah, Blah P.O.W.

Lynnette   July 7th, 2008 11:33 am ET

This is just another indication that McCain doesn't have a clue about running a presidential campaign or how to take suggestions from people who do. Typical.

Obama-Junkie, IL   July 7th, 2008 11:35 am ET

That's interesting , and encouraging for Democrats. From the top tier of Republican candidates for President, Giuliani ran one of the worst campaigns.

Why?   July 7th, 2008 11:36 am ET

It won't help. And taking Guilliani's failed campaign director is a sure fire way to ensure a loss. McCain can figure on an early mid-winter vacation.

California Gold   July 7th, 2008 11:36 am ET

Please try to keep up Mr. McCain. Shuffling staff, organizing and reorganizing, and building a campaign that consists of little more than criticism of your opponent is not going to get you in the White House.

fojohnson   July 7th, 2008 11:36 am ET

MCcain start to souffle his campaign staff. Remember that was what happen to HIllary. How many times has MCcain done so since the primary started. If he cannot put competent people to help him win, instead he keeps making changes in his staff, that is a warning sign of trouble. How can he chose competent people if is becomes president? His he going to change all his cabinet people in their position to make things work, Boy we are in for a big rid if he wins.

MCCAIN 08   July 7th, 2008 11:38 am ET

Well he did such a good job with Rudy. I mean what a track record. I can just see what DuHaime is whispering in Rudy's ear in this caption.

" Rudy, now remember, Deny, Deny,Deny.. got it?"

James in NYC   July 7th, 2008 11:39 am ET

This just in, I heard that all McCain voters will get the first flight out to Iraq and a rifle all expenses paid!
Vote McCain in 08!

Republicans for Obama   July 7th, 2008 11:42 am ET

The guy didn't help Rudy's Campaign, and he won't be able to help McCain's either! McCain is surrounded by losers. McCain is the King of Losers!!!

McCain the guy who betrayed America and confessed to being a War Criminal, which resulted in VIetnam torturing U.S. Soldiers till they would confess like McCain.

McCain the guy who had an affair with a woman 18 years younger than him, while his wife was disabled at home from a car wreck. McCain the guy who divorced his wife, and within 30 days married his mistress Cindy!!!

McCain the guy who was investigated for Political Corruption as part of the Keating 5.

McCain the guy who had an affair with a female Lobbyist, while his 2nd wife Cindy was at home drugged up on medication that she stole from a Healthcare Organization.

McCain is a Dirtbag!!!!!
McSame Ole Bush Lies and Politics!!!!!
McSame Ole Clinton Sexual Affairs!!!!

sPoNgEbOb sQuArEpAnTs   July 7th, 2008 11:43 am ET

I don't know why McCain continue to surrender himself with tainted politicians

-Karl Rove -DIRTY and "Bushy"
-Swift Boat vets- Very dirty and "Bushy"
-Bush Campaign manager - dirty and "Bushy"
-Six Lobbyists advisors - dirty and "Bushy"

Why does McCain deny running for Bush’s 3rd term?
