Edwards didn't rule out running for VP a second time.
Edwards didn't rule out running for VP a second time.

(CNN) – John Edwards said Tuesday that if he were asked to accept the vice presidential slot or a cabinet position in a potential Barack Obama administration, he would “seriously consider” whatever the Illinois senator asked him to do.

It has been widely reported that the former North Carolina senator is on Obama’s vice presidential shortlist. On Tuesday, NPR interviewer Guy Raz called the former Democratic presidential candidate’s presence on the list an “open secret,” and asked Edwards whether he’d weigh accepting a vice presidential offer, or might take himself out of consideration as Virginia Senator Jim Webb had done Monday.

“I’m glad to hear that’s an open secret because I didn’t know it,” joked Edwards of his rumored consideration as Obama’s running mate.

“My answer to that is, I’ve run for vice president, I’ve run for president twice. I would do anything that I felt I could do to serve this country but I think it’s a huge presumption for me or anybody else to suggest what Senator Obama may decide,” he said.

Watch: Flashback: Kerry picks Edwards for No. 2

“To answer your question directly: I don’t expect to be asked, have no expectation about it at all, I will – anything that Senator Obama asks me to do, including this, including campaigning for him, I intend to do, because what I’m going to do, I intend to take seriously,” he added. “What I intend to do is everything in my power, use everything in my power to make sure that he’s the next president.”

Pressed on whether that meant he might join the ticket if asked, Edwards would not rule it out. “I am prepared to seriously consider anything, anything he asks me to do for our country,” he told NPR.

When he endorsed Obama in May, John Kerry’s 2004 running mate had said he was not interested in another vice presidential bid.

In June, the Associated Press reported that Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, who has met with Obama's vice presidential search committee, had been told Edwards was on the list of candidates.

Vote McCain. He appreciates our values and will hold them sacred.

Marc PDX   July 8th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

"Edwards would seriously consider VP offer"…

Yeah, I think we pretty much knew that. He didn't really need to ask for in the media. Ok, John, we've got your name. Thanks…

The only ones who haven't recused themselves at this point are the ones Obama doesn't want. But, as one of his supporters said earlier, he can do it by himself anyway (in the Webb Not Interested article).

Malcom Little ...... x   July 8th, 2008 6:36 pm ET

There is definitely a role for John Edwards to play … not sure it will be VP though.

Whatever the role, he would be well positioned after an Obama administration to continue a Democratic stronghold on the Presidency.

Rob in Sacramento   July 8th, 2008 6:36 pm ET

please John, you left the race before i could vote for you in the California primary. id love to see a caring human being in the VP's office instead of the vampire we have now. just be sure to have the place disinfected & exorcised before you go in.

I have not heard of this "dream team"; why not Obama-Powell? Powell has openly "disagreed" with the current dummies and the GOP in general, has great respect in the nation for his military knowledge and achievements and is intelligent and could be a perfect addition to a team that wants to "CHANGE" things…

Rey   July 8th, 2008 6:38 pm ET

Why would we want him when Hillary is by far more popular and preferred by the American people. If we wanted Edwards, he would have been the finalist and not Hillary. So I think she is the best candidate…

Roberta Montgomery   July 8th, 2008 6:38 pm ET

Yes!!! Choose Edwards!!!

Bulldog   July 8th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

Edwards is the man. He helped Kerry if anything and Kerry lost because of the dirty Swift Boat smears and the failure to attack back quick enough. Too many people got conned by the GOP and most people have woke up in regards to the dirty GOP tactics. The GOP is the boy who cried wolf one too many times. They are liars and manipulators. Edwards would make a great VP.

senorclandestino   July 8th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

an Obama/Edwards ticket would be unstoppable. and the republicans wouldnt be able to use the VP against him, as they would if Hillary were chosen (remember the "commander in cheif threshold "remarks she made during the primary?= toxic) i think pretty much every democrat can agree with edwards

Choosing Edwards was a mistake once and to do it again? It reminds me of a proverb I've heard before.

spencer   July 8th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

We most definitely need John Edwards in the new administration–but we need him to be Attorney General–to get to the bottom of that mess and straighten out our legal system. He'd be wasted as veep. Later he'd be great on the Supreme Court.

Terrence (Winston Salem, NC)   July 8th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

I would think this was the ORIGINAL dream ticket. Edwards is young energetic and doesn't have the "dirty politician" image. His wife is a champion for healthcare which will make it a priority of his as well. I say that's the ticket to beat. It's either him or Sebelius.

Hillary Clinton
John Edwards

Wesley Clark
Bill Richardson.

I like John Edwards alot. I really like him as Obama's running mate. I hope Obama goes with Edwards, cause I don't think he has too many other serious options.

No Obama/Hillary 08…NOBAMA. The DNC is playing with fire:
I will not vote for Obama, nor will I give money if HILLARY IS NOT THE VP. You give Edwards the VP when HILLARY GOT 18 MILLION VOTES.
This will be t he last straw.

Eric   July 8th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Yawn. He didn't get enough in 2004? Obama isn't getting my vote because of his new stance on the FISA bill so it doesn't matter, but he is going to need a VP with executive experience, that leaves Edwards out.

RC   July 8th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Do you want to be second in line for the most important job in the world or not, Ed? If Obama chooses him, the GOP will just point out how dear old John is a flipflopper.

Refine is not the same as redefine.
We need put some good dictionaries in the hands of the GOP to make our lives easier. A little education is worse than none. Can you imagine how many lectures we had to do on this? It reminded me about "renounce and reject" November can't come sooner!! We have to educate people about the constitution, economy, diplomacy and now English. How low have we gone since the last seven years? Maybe Obama should leave big grammar and speak like a cowboy or a south-south Chicago guy. BTW, Edward will be a good VP.

prayingforshalom   July 8th, 2008 7:00 pm ET

An Obama/Edwards combination would no doubt be a strong ticket in being agents for change, restoring our image abroad, and above all making poverty a key issue over the next 4-8 years.

I can really see using your talents for a Prime position in the Barack's cabinet, Supreme Court or even the Attorney General top position..

Obama 08   July 8th, 2008 7:06 pm ET

Edwards would make a great Vice President. 8 years as Vice President, then a run for President would be great for him. Might help Obama to get more attention from White Blue Collar workers too in the North, and in the South.

Richardson is the best match though. Another great Vice President, and would make a great President in 8 years.. Brilliant man, great politician, and could help get voters in the West.

Sebellius the female Kansas Governor would also be a great pick. Tons of experience. Just like Obama liked by both Democrats and Republicans. Plus could help get women voters. She'd make a great first female president too. Plus votes in Central U.S.

Obama can't go wrong with any of those 3!!!!

I am completely tired of all these people, who keep on boring us with their many fervent promises not to vote for Obama. The last time I checked, the good ol' US of A, was and still is a democracy. As such its people are free to exercise their civic right, to vote for or against whomsoever they please.

You don't want to vote for Obama, and I cannot wait to vote for this "shining statesman… (Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia)" So shut the **** up, and go vote as you please in November, and we all will God willing, live to see the result of our collective votes.

Edwards won't join the ticket. Been there done that.

Obama is going to get decimated in the general election. We have so many friends who didn't even show up at the polls during the primaries and they are voting for McCain. Sure we have some friends of ours that like Obama as well, but they have had a hard time lately articulating what he stands for. I enjoy reminding them that Obama's hardcore liberal stances are now shifting and he is backtracking on every promise he made not to be the same old same old. Guess what…he is just like the rest of them. At least with John we know what we are getting. Check his record.

Well lets see Richardson, Biden and Edwards. That is probably all left on VP list. Of the three I like Biden, but I still will not vote for Obama. No I forgot the Governor of Kansas whats her name. Edwards could not win his own state in 2004. Richardson - words cannot describe him and then the Governor - he would not get any of Hillary's 18 million if he pick her. Obama is too arrogant to pick the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that the magic has gone from the Obama campaign, what extraordinary things can they do to stop people from walking away in disappointment? Big rallies and speeches or VP? If there were any love existed, the love may have been burdened with guilt from the very start. But for most of us, we don’t need to suffer the mischief of love and the guilt placed upon us by others. We have choices.

Has somebody deceived us into thinking that we don’t have a choice? Nobody secured the nomination yet. The super delegates haven’t been giving a chance to vote yet. We have choices in Denver (we should), and then we have choices again in November.

By the way, how much money is enough to buy 18 million love and more?

Obama changes his positions like i change my undies. daily sometimes twice a day. Vote McCain. He appreciates our values and will hold them sacred.

This real combat vet recognizes (like many others I'm sure) through your use of the term "girlie-man" that your IQ basically disqualifies you from having an intelligent opinion.

Go back and do your home work on both candidates and you'll certainly find Mc Stale is the flip flopper same-old same-old. I'm sure you voted for rock head W and therefore bear some respoonsibilty for the economy, the war and Bin Ladens permanent vacation.

Dear Scott L,

Take your meds and dream on, McBush is not winning this election. There are too many Dems salivating to vote for Barack–overwhelmingly. My advice to you is to move out of the way because the Obama train is barreling down the tracks for Washington, D.C.

A flip-flopper? I could have sworn he already said, "no". Can't anyone in politics give a straight answer? I will write Hillary on my ballot in November, no matter who these jerks decide to run with.

jimmy velman   July 8th, 2008 7:39 pm ET

OBAMA HAS SOME SERIOUS THINKING AND EVALUATIING ON HIS VP CHOICES. HE IS BEING CLOSELY SCRUTINIZED NOW AS THE CONVENTION PREPARATIONS ARE GOING ON.
tHE NOTION THAT McCAIN IS "OLD" DOES NOT CARRY AS MUCH WEIGHT AS INEXPERIENCE DOES. ESPECIALLY MORE SO NOW THAT WAR WITH IRAN SEEMS INEVITABLE.. WOULD AMERICANS
VOTE FOR AN INEXPERIENCED CANDIDATE OVER A WAR HERO
AND WITH MUCH EXPERIENCE LIKE JOHN McCAIN?

Anonymous   July 8th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

LOL CNN, I love your Flashback: Kerry picks Edwards. I seriously think Obama should pick no Vp if that is legal.

Russell Hammond   July 8th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

Huge mistake, especially if McCain selects Romney as his running mate. Obama needs a moderate/centrist to beat a McCain/Romney ticket. Clinton would spell disaster as well.

tarrie   July 8th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

Cnn: You are too obsessed with potential Obama VP's. Please take about substantives issues for e.g. the economy and world affairs. Day-after-day this network is looking more like Faux News.

benvictor   July 8th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

Yea, I would put these two birds together. In the end, it makes no difference who is VP because the head of the ticket is unelectable. So, get over it.

Marge Hibbing Mn   July 8th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

ISthat why he started to stick his head up you know where on obama?
guess he'll oick another looser won't he.

Peachy Keen   July 8th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

Frankly, I feel anyone who calls John Edwards a loser is probably someone who never finished school and is having trouble now paying their rent. John Edwards and Barack Obama are both self made men who became very successful because of hard work and by being self motivators. To succeed in this country, you need drive and brains. Both of these men have both.

And Combat Vet, if you have to change your undies twice a day, maybe you should change to Depends. What are you afraid of that cause's you to keep messing your pants. I'm afraid you are the loser.

Voter   July 8th, 2008 7:43 pm ET

We saw how that worked out in 2004, right? He did not even carry NC, his home state. Not a good move for the Dems.

Neil   July 8th, 2008 7:44 pm ET

To the gentleman who left the first comment "A Combat Vet Observation" You have to change your undies all the time, sometimes twice a day? I guess you'll be needing extra diapers when Obama becomes our next president.

Shaik   July 8th, 2008 7:44 pm ET

Picking another (former) Senator would be a mistake. Would love to see someone not tainted by Washington politics - goes with his "CHANGE" message. Edwards could hold any Cabinet post and be successful and respected.
Let's face it….people are tired of "career politicians"…

I'd really prefer Hillary as VP.

Lesley   July 8th, 2008 7:47 pm ET

Scott L - I tried to check McCain's record but, sorry, I'm having a hard time deciding which McCain record to check. He has changed his position on many issues, includingh his own legislation, so I suppose he's one of the rest of them that you are speaking of. I think flip flop should be banned from the English language.

Linda of Atlanta   July 8th, 2008 7:47 pm ET

I wish people would stop with the Hillary for VP nonsense. Hillary comes with Bill Clinton and that will not be good for Democrats. Who in the world would want Bill looking over and questionning every action he takes- Not Obama. People forget that Bill served his two terms and nobody wants him to think he has a third term.
I really like the idea of Edwards as VP!

strong   July 8th, 2008 7:48 pm ET

Of course Edwards would take it, if asked. Like duh.

Doesn't his cheezy grin say it all ??

Ian   July 8th, 2008 7:49 pm ET

Interesting. And what about the looming Social Security crisis? You know, the one that has a $30 trillion price tag and we have no money in savings. Maybe that's going to be the trade-off when we have national healthcare.

NotFallingInLine.org   July 8th, 2008 7:49 pm ET

Edwards, eh? Well, so many others who are serious about their futures - including Hillary - have already turned Barry down. I suppose Edwards figures that he's got nothing to lose. Unfortunately for Barry, it's not all that clear that Edwards would bring North Carolina to him the way that Webb would have brought Virginia.

I THINK JOHN EDWARDS WOULD BE THE "PERFECT" VICE PRESIDENT FOR THE UNITED STATES. ACTUALLY, HE WAS MY PREFERENCE FOR PRESIDENT. NOT THAT I DID NOT LIKE OBAMA. BEING AN AFRICAN AMERICAN, I AM PROUD OF OBAMA. DURING THE EARLIER TIME OF THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINATING PROCESS, I DID NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT BARACK OBAMA AND THE CIVIC WORK HE HAS DONE IN HIS COMMUNITY, BUT I KNEW ALOT ABOUT HOW JOHN EDWARDS WAS SACRIFING HIS LIFE TO HELP THE PEOPLE IN NEW ORLEANS WHO SO DESPERATELY NEEDED SOMEONE TO SPEAK AND ACT ON THEIR BEHALF.

Politico   July 8th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

Edwards for Attorney General, but not Veep.

c schildknecht   July 8th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

Just what is needed - two inexperienced people occupying the two most important positions in the government. Edwards was not only unable to make his case to the American people in the 2004 primaries - he was also unable to carry his won state in the national election. In the 2008 primaries he again ran a distant third. I fail to see what he brings to the ticket ither than a pretty boy image. To be quite honest, his time would be better spent tending to his young children and his ailing wife.
Obama needs someone who will offset the weaknesses that he brings to the ticket. He needs someone with foreign policy experience and who has served in several different governmental positions. Of all the Democrats available - Bill Richardson is the obvious candidate. In addition, he brings Hispanic credentials.
While I have not made up my mind who I will support (I have voted Republican since I first voted in 1972 and frankly, I am very unhappy with the selection of John McCain) I do know that an Obama Edwards ticket will not get my vote. WHile I am no fan of Bill Richardson, I do feel that an Obama Richardson ticket would have much to offer and could very well get my vote in November.

John Edwards - brilliant choice! The main issue is the ECONOMY and Edwards has the strongest most sincere pro-worker platform of all the Dems. Sure the right-wing bigoted idiots (call them BIGIOTS) will make fun of his hair, but who cares?! Obama can't lose - unless he Were to choose Hillary, which is virtually impossible. Edwards would seal the deal. Can you spell L-A-N-D-S-L-I-D-E ?!

A SUGGESTION TO ALL YOU PSEUDO PRO-HILLARY RIGHT-WING NUT-JOBS: Get a life! Have you actually watched McCain give an entire speech?! Quite scarey! Any corporation that can trim costs ahead of these two will do so. Already WARN Act notices have skyrocketed

Bad idea. Obama will lose, and he will have been on a losing ticket twice as VP candidate. Run the next time. Edwards had the best platform, but the media didn't cover him. All the attention was focused on Hillary and Obama. Obama is just too wishy-washy, and will taint Edwards' image. Edwards can stand on his own, not as #2–that is, if the media will give him a fair shake.

As much as I hate to admit it, recent polling suggests an Obama/Clinton ticket… in spite of the supposed threat of Hillary inciting some miraculous GOP get out the vote efforts come November.

Hillary, for historic and executive reasons, will corner the women's and Latino vote. The Dem voter mismatch with a Obama/Clinton ticket will overwhelm any GOP threat. Bill is the only wildcard in offering Hillary the spot and will be advised to be less visible and pull back on the campaign circuit. He will work the behind the scenes DNC fundraising.

Edwards will not draw the vote and is, instead, the likely next US attorney general.

The GOPs woeful trickle down voodoo economic policies, domestic mismanagement, and arrogant foreign policies have run their course.

What??????

Just a month ago, he said he would "not consider" such an invitation/

Oh brother! He's too late, way too late!!

I'm hoping that Biden is selected, or even Daschle, but not Edwards or never Clinton.

Mike Bulmer   July 8th, 2008 8:31 pm ET

I think everyone blaming Edwards for Kerry's loss in 2004 needs to take a step back and give the man a break. Let's get serious here for a minute and look at the facts. Yes, it's true Edwards couldn't deliver his home state, but we do have to consider the political and economic climate of 2004. Kerry was leading Bush in many of the polls until the Swift Boat ads and the dirty smear tactics of the GOP and Bush campaign entered the public eye.

It's also true that Kerry wasn't the greatest candidate to begin with. He is a war hero with plenty of experience, but was still viewed as far too liberal to be able to pull away any of Bush's supporters or rally the Democratic base like Obama has done.

Out of the televised debates leading up to the 2004 election, I found the most interesting one to be the VP debate between Edwards and Cheney. John Edwards ran circles around Dick Cheney. He was charming, witty, and wasn't afraid to break the debate rules a couple of times to call Cheney out on his illegal practices within the administration.

Obama and Edwards are more alike than even Obama and Clinton were. They are two young, smart, good-looking men who represent a movement for change, who want to turn their back on the old politics of this country, and who want to turn the page on the failed Bush policies of the past 7 years.

I personally think they would make an excellent team.

BJ   July 8th, 2008 8:33 pm ET

Why bother having a VP?

Obama and his bots seems to think he can win this all by himself. And to hear them, you would think he's capable of running the country alone too!

BH   July 8th, 2008 8:38 pm ET

Doesnot matter. Obama is not going to end the war, infact he is not even capable of doing so, if you listen to what he has been saying lately.
Obama with John Edwards by his side is going to lose the general election. Joe Biden is the best option for him. He might win with Joe Biden at his side. Biden is a very smart man and the only person to have a solution for Iraq. Richardson is an opportunist who donot have any respect for loyalty or friendship.

I know Obama needs Hillary to win, but I really hope that she doesnot accept that offer. She should be president, not vice president.

Mary   July 8th, 2008 8:38 pm ET

Not only did Mr. $400 haircut not help Kerry win, he couldn't even carry his own state when he was running for President. How is he suppose to help Obama?

Also, his wife if fighting cancer. Shouldn't he be spending time with her during that ordeal if he is such a "caring" person?

Although he endorsed Obama late in the game, I noticed his wife did not.

Jimenez   July 8th, 2008 8:39 pm ET
