McCain, Obama slam Iran

Obama and McCain have reacted to the Iran missile test.
Obama and McCain have reacted to the Iran missile test.

(CNN) - Presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain said Wednesday Iran's missile test showcases the need for implementing a more effective missile defense system while his Democratic counterpart, Barack Obama, said the event highlights the need for more aggressive diplomacy with the rogue nation.

Watch: Iran tests missiles

"Ballistic missile testing coupled with Iran's continued refusal to cease its nuclear activities should unite the international community in efforts to counter Iran's dangerous ambitions," McCain said in a statement. "Iran's missile tests also demonstrate the need for effective missile defense now and in the future, and this includes missile defense in Europe as is planned with the Czech Republic and Poland."

"Working with our European and regional allies is the best way to meet the threat posed by Iran, not unilateral concessions that undermine multilateral diplomacy," McCain also said.

Obama, who has faced criticism for saying he would directly sit down with sworn enemies of the United States, told CBS Wednesday morning the test underscores the need for direct diplomacy.

"At this point, the report is unclear, it's still early," he said on CBS' The Early Show. "What this underscores is the need for a clear policy that is putting the burden on Iran to change behavior. And frankly, we just have not been able to do that the last several years, partly because we're not engaged in direct diplomacy."

Obama also said he will continue to push for an incentive package that seeks to deter Iran from its nuclear goals.

gluv – I believe everyone that was running for President on the Democrat side said that Iran was the main threat in 2004 including Kerry. I might be wrong, but I think I am right on that. Of course we should have not been in Iraq and should have been concentrating on these other countries.

Thanks George Bush for heping to make Iran the nation that they are today. They were in check by Iraq before you and the cowboys had the great idear about going in and raping the country of all of its oil. Now Iran has more power and is more of a threat than ever before. Bush/McSame.
Wake up people and see what we are going to get if we vote for a washed up old man like McSame. DEATH will be at our door at all times. Obama is the way to go at this time. Mcsame and Bush are killing us.

geez, both candidates have basically the same stance on Iran. If you people think McCain won't be talking with Iran or that Obama won't leave a military option on the table then you are silly.

By the way when John McBush was asked about the free trade we do with Iran all he could do was come up with his sick joke and then laugh at his sick joke. Would John( Geo. ) McBush be willing to stop all of these big money people from selling in Iran. We do not want direct talk ,but we want their money. Give me a break ! Barack Hussein Obama 08

...But Obama's not that concerned about Iran (or is he? can't remember which week we're in right now...) because it is a small country compared to the Soviet Union back in the Cold War... so not to worry...

  12. Cant believe so-called americans!

Really! Cant believe that McSame's supporters can be this bold! Wake UP America! This is the same republican administration that McSame stands for, the same one that is behind Bush, the same one that have sunk America so low this past 8 years! Wake UP! How can you be so stupid and yet so bold? You should be ashamed of yourselves!

The media is not emphatically reporting that even Bush recently admitted to diplomacy talks with North Korea as a chief reason as to the positive changes taking place with those foreign relations? McSame is spewing what he is fed as a republican rep even when its proven not to work – Iraq a costly example.

Ann from CA, You sound sick. Hillary Clinton has lost the nomination and the superdelegates will not overturn it. She has moved on and maybe you should as well. If you think war is the answer to everything, vote your convictions and vote for McCain. Obama is not weak on foreign policy. He will listen to the intelligence reports and make dicisions accordingly. McCain is weak on the economy which affects us more than anything else. We do not need to be engaged in another war. We can't afford to police the entire world.

This election has really gotten out of hand.

I think we should use both direct and indirect negotiation with Iran. Communications can really help resolve problems. During the cold war period, we had a red hot line with USSR, which shows how important direct communications can be for the humanity.

Barak will hold on to the "aggressive diplomacy" angle until the bombs are falling in Tel Aviv. Then he'll "refine" his thoughts on the matter... Sheesh! (All we are saying.... is give Experience a chance...)

Faith- evidently you have never seen the poorest people in America to say that they live like a king compared to other countries. Our poor people in America are in worse shape than you apparently think.

Granted America is still the best place to live. But to make blanket statements like yours shows your ignorance of conditions at home and you lack of travel abroad.

Obama needs to do his homework and learn more about the State Departments briefings on International terrorist and Tyrants (ITT's).
It is no secret the US is engaged in talks with Iran, but not at the executive level.. Let the system work before we cry foul... The missile launches are suppost to bring fear to the US and Isreal, but most of all give fire to their extreme supporters that Iran is the new killer Diller in the middle east.

Interesting that we can post comments on Iran test firing missiles, but what about the fact that the Iraqi government wants a firm timetable for U.S. withdrawl? Is this not BIG news???

Barack can send Michelle to talk to the Iranians since she has the stones in the family anyway!

Seriously, this is just another reason why Barack has no business being the president.

Yet another Hillary supporter going with McCain!

Don't moderate this! You in the MSM are afraid of the truth that why you only post right wing lies.
John McCain is only talking because the USA is strapped and cannot sustain another war. We are in debt up to our eyeballs to China, Iran's largest recipient of their oil. As our banker China would not stand for our interence in their oil imports from Iran. You at CNN are a tool of the right wing Neo Con agenda. You want to make people afraid and are driving this racial hatred of people in the middle east. The US with all of it's skewed diplomacy has now received threats from Russia,
It's all our fault, and diplomacy is the answer.
