McCain, Obama slam Iran

Obama and McCain have reacted to the Iran missile test.
Obama and McCain have reacted to the Iran missile test.

(CNN) - Presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain said Wednesday Iran's missile test showcases the need for implementing a more effective missile defense system while his Democratic counterpart, Barack Obama, said the event highlights the need for more aggressive diplomacy with the rogue nation.

Watch: Iran tests missiles

"Ballistic missile testing coupled with Iran's continued refusal to cease its nuclear activities should unite the international community in efforts to counter Iran's dangerous ambitions," McCain said in a statement. "Iran's missile tests also demonstrate the need for effective missile defense now and in the future, and this includes missile defense in Europe as is planned with the Czech Republic and Poland."

"Working with our European and regional allies is the best way to meet the threat posed by Iran, not unilateral concessions that undermine multilateral diplomacy," McCain also said.

Obama, who has faced criticism for saying he would directly sit down with sworn enemies of the United States, told CBS Wednesday morning the test underscores the need for direct diplomacy.

"At this point, the report is unclear, it's still early," he said on CBS' The Early Show. "What this underscores is the need for a clear policy that is putting the burden on Iran to change behavior. And frankly, we just have not been able to do that the last several years, partly because we're not engaged in direct diplomacy."

Obama also said he will continue to push for an incentive package that seeks to deter Iran from its nuclear goals.

NOBAMA wants to sit down and have a spot of tea. Iran will never sit down and have a serious talk.with the intention of living up to their word.

He has not even had tea with our Military Leaders and he wants to sit down with Iran....... HE HAS NO IDEA WHAT IS GOING ON. HE IS A LOST PUPPY.

NOBAMA is a weak cadidate on all fronts with foreign policy being his weakest.

Why doesn't McCain EVER talk about Afghanistan???? Maybe because the situation is HORRIBLE there. Surge in Iraq = Chaos in Afghanistan. I thought McCain was very knowlegable of war and national security. So he needs to explain why his great plans are failing in Afganistan where the number of troops killed is going up. And now he want's to "bomb, bomb, bomb Iran". McCain, maybe we should handle our other conflicts before you start threatening to bomb more countries. Thank you for your service, but that was then and this is now. The Straight Talk Express is dead.

How many missile tests US has done during the cold war ? That time US felt endangered. Same way Iran as a sovereign nation feels now. Diplomacy can do a lot.

Yeah, I would rather have a diplomat than a general in the White House. This "ready-fire-aim" thing hasn't been working out for us lately...

McCain is a loose cannon. Not an ideal trait you'd want in your commander in chief.

Question for Mc Cain and his supporters, after bomping Iran ( killing many if not thousands of people) proberbly not the president will you then sit down with him and talk you difference out or you will colonize it and make another USA Iran. Why do you have to resort to bombs if people can just talk. What makes you different from those who go out killing so that they can be listerned to it is so sad that in this cencury we use more than half of our economy which is already in red preparing for WAR rother than building BRIDGES OF LOVE.

It's only after President Reagan shored up our missile defense system and made sure of our military clout - that he could shout, "Mr. Gobachov, tear down that wall!" And down it came! You don't "negotiate" with bullies - you confront them head on. McCain - the only realist now left in this race - gets my vote.

Mccain will use missles to stop Iran. Obama will use the power of reasoning through dialogue. I fear many Americans would rather support Mccain's way, which is perpetually degenerating this country spiraling it out of control in a last ditch effort to rule the world through global domination by brute strength. Hence, the reason why we are hated.

Iran is reacting negatively to the undiplomatic rhetoric coming out of Washington.

Maybe now we can try diplomacy.

John McCain sang "Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran". That certainly put the Iranians on notice about his attitudes. I can imagine the man on the street in Iran feeling warmer towards the US as a result – NOT. It simply solidifies attitudes against us .

Saber rattling has accomplished nothing under George Bush. As this demonstrates, the rattling is being ratcheted up a few notches.

Brinkmanship is not a game any of us should be playing. I'd certainly rather seek resolutions without bombs.

  14. Not So Delusional

I hate to say it, because I wish it were not true, but there will be a day not too far away in our lifetime where there will be an ALL OUT war with the middle east.

I'm not talking about Iran and Syria. But an all out war between the USA / its allies and Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iran, Saudi Arabia...

It sucks to think that way, but you can just smell the coffee brewing.

All these comments are saying that McCain would bomb Iran, and Obama would talk to an enemy alone. Did anyone read the article? both mentioned multi-national diplomatic attempts. Save the fanatical political rhetoric for people who care.

Obama continues to believe that the solution to problems with foreign enemies is to sit with them dressed in their traditional clothing, hold hands, smoke a peace pipe, and sing Kumbaya.

You republicants are funny "Iran is a bully" hahahaha are you kidding me?! When's the last time Iran has strong-armed us into anything? You know, simply showing someone some respect can get you a lot further than threatening them; and that's just what's happened. How do you expect them to react to threats? Republicants, please....take Psych 101.

    Say no to cowboy mentality!

Is this REALLY the best that America can do? OBAMA or MCCAIN? Geeeez.... There are MILLIONS of well-educated, experienced, and innovative people in our GREAT COUNTRY. Is it really down to these two guys? Neither one of them seem excited about anything POSITIVE in getting our wonderful country back on track. Talk, talk , talk, talk, talk. When will they WALK their TALK. We need ACTION and a lot of it. You know, while they are flying around buying balloons and banners, people in Iowa are still suffering from the recent floods; crime is ongoing; unemployment is rising; the young and old are hungry; legacy companies are failing and folding; sailors and soldiers are dying; and I could go on and on. All that campaign money is a waste and a joke. If neither candidate has the ability to "sell" themselves simply through their [stellar] resume' and altruistic actions, then shame on them, and shame on America for letting them get away with it.

MC WAR WANT TO SPENT MORE MONEY (THAT WE DON'T HAVE TO DO WHATEVER HE IS SAYING IN EUROPE). AT THIS STAGE OF THE HUMAN EVOLUTION, WAR IS NOT A SOLUTION... TALKS ARE.

TO jay. OBAMA IS FOR PIECE AND THE CANDIDATE WHO IS MORE LIKELY TO START WW III IS MC CAIN WHY? BECAUSE THE RUSSIANS ARE OPPOSE OF WHATEVER MC SHAME WANTS TO DO IN EUROPE AND HIS ARRONGANCE IS GOING TO CAUSE US MORE ENEMY THAN WHAT WE HAVE NOW.
ALWAYS REMEMBER SADDAM WAS THE REASON IRAN NEVER DID NOT HAVE A VOICE BEFORE. THE WAR IN IRAQ IS THE BIGGEST MISTAKE IN THE US HISTORY... THINK THINK THINK jay.

    GO BARACK. WE LOVE YOU.
