Watch Michelle Obama's comments .

(CNN)— In the wake of comments from presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama that he regretted allowing his daughters to participate in a television interview and would be avoiding similar situations in the future, wife Michelle Obama said again Wednesday she had initially asked her husband not to run for president because she didn’t want her two children to endure constant media exposure.

“I said don’t do it,” Michelle Obama told supporters at an event in Michigan. “What was going through my mind is that politics is mean and tough. I mean there was nothing that I wanted for my girls less than to have their lives turned upside down, you know to have them exposed to the public eye [or] to hear their parents being criticized on national TV.”

The potential first lady said she eventually decided that supporting her husband’s presidential bid would be the best move she could make for her daughters — that she wanted them to grow up in a world where there weren't any limits on what they could achieve.

“I had to step back and take off my ‘me’ hat and put on my ‘citizen’ hat,” Mrs. Obama said.

It is very disturbing to see the flip flopping that goes on with Obama and his wife Michelle.

Now we get to see the great lengths both Obama and his wife will go to try to get their butts moved into the white house.

Exploiting their children this way should make everyone around them be very concerned about who/what else might be their next victim victim considering the desperate measures Obama is now taking to get attention for himself.

Judy   July 9th, 2008 8:32 pm ET

I hope that the news media will have the decency to leave these two children alone, they deserve to be allow to have pressure free lives and to enjoy being children. My only disagreement with Ms. Obama's comment was when she saidm "she wanted them to grow up in a world where there weren't any limits on what they could achieve." she should have qualified this comment with, 'unless you are a woman and want to run for president'.

scared Obamas   July 9th, 2008 8:22 pm ET

Obamas seem to live dual life.

What Sen Obama privately thinks and says, (remember those gun totting bitter Americans was said in closed doors), can come out in public unknowingly, accidently once again.

They are rightly scared of the fact, if kids spill the beans, tell that Rev Wright is still adored, and Rezko sends Christmas gifts, and what not.

GHM   July 9th, 2008 8:21 pm ET

What a family! To place their children before themselves is far and few between in these days and in our society. It may have been a mistake to have this publice interview but the real point should be that you have learned by your mistake and will never do it again. You are a beautiful family, a lot ot be proud of, and should be admired by more people in this country and lear from you and your family values.
GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR BELOVED GIRLS. Can't wait for them to be able to roam the halls of our Grand White House.
Loev you.

Go McCain   July 9th, 2008 8:18 pm ET

I am so tired of everyone saying how she is "just like us"–a "working mom". Well, I'm a working mom but I don't think I have much in common with her. I'm not a lawyer, living in a mansion, married to a Senator making 6 figures with million dollar book deals. Tell me, Michelle, how often did you go to the local Target and comparison shop for generic diapers, formula, etc? Did you worry about losing part of your paycheck ( and how that would affect the weeks grocery bill) when a child was sick and you had to leave work? Somehow, I don't think you and me have much in common.

Toot   July 9th, 2008 8:17 pm ET

Someone is not telling the truth here. Just a few months ago her brother stated in an interview on national tv that she is the reason that he is running for President and she is a very sore loser.
I see another flip flop here!!

Flip-Flop, Flip-Flop, Flip-Flop!!!

Ed   July 9th, 2008 8:13 pm ET

Hmm... Now you see em, now you don't. Just like Obama to do what he needs when he needs to just win.

Vig   July 9th, 2008 8:11 pm ET

The more these two open their mouths, the more bull spills out. If Obama flip-flops on this issue, I can't wait to see what he does when there is the eventual showdown with Iran. I can hear it now, "I regret having done this, I regret having said that, I regret, I regret, I regret. Yeah, and I regret that you are running for a position you have no business occupying. Put Hillary Clinton's name in nomination in August and return her stolen nomination.

WOW, everyone does find a spin in every story don't they? One interview with his girls in the whole time Obama's been campaigning, primary and general combined, and you got him judged as parading the kids for votes. The bad comments are getting out of control in here. And all based on no evidence or proof at all.

Former HC Girl   July 9th, 2008 7:48 pm ET

Sounds like Michelle is a flip flopper too!! She says she didn't want her kids subjected to a mean political campaign, and then she allows the interviews and then says they regret doing that.
These people either cannot make up their minds or are just plain idiots.
I think idiots.

RJ, CA   July 9th, 2008 7:28 pm ET

The Obama girls already do well, with the $10,000 a year their mother says are spent on piano and dance lessons for them.

I’d also like Michelle explain how her compensation at the University of Chicago Hospital jumped from $121,910 in 2004 - before her husband was elected to the U.S. Senate - to $316,962 in 2005 - just 3 months after was elected. That's nearly a $200,000 raise. Think she suddenly became more proficient on the job? I think it’s more a case of “special interests” at work there.

I also think she dresses in really poor taste. Continually exposing her arms like that makes her look a bit "trashy" and militant and is extremely undignified for a woman who wants to be first lady.

Helen, NY   July 9th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

Not against Barack just pointing out how stupid comments are at times. Also, the Change Theme doesn't seem to work many of Barack's supporters who leave commentary behind here because they're just nasty and outright mean. If you say Republicans are dirty look at yourself in the mirror.

Michelle Obama is spectacular. Her strength, intelligence, accomplishment and love for her family speak volumes. She will make a terrific first lady. She is a woman that all girls in America can look up too. She started from humble origins, working hard and earning degrees from both Princeton and Harvard. Her daughters are very fortunate to have Barack and Michelle looking after them.

The girls were charming in the interview. I hope the media respects their parents wishes and leaves them alone. They are dear little children.

The audacity of this. They let their daughters be interviewed and then say they shouldn't have. Which is it? They are supposedly so intelligent – where are their brains. It is obviously all for the limelight. Anyone knows the media makes a circus out of things and for them to not realize this is a joke. they knew and did it anyway and now are being so hypocritical.

Her college thesis, her membership in a black liberation church, and her comments about being proud of America all reflect her values - and those of the likes of Rev. Wright - hate and racism. Bitter - New Orleans, LA   July 9th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

They already live in a world where there aren't limits to what they can achieve. Oh that's right, I don't live in your imaginary world where only having barack as president will make you proud and the world a better place.

Peter E   July 9th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

Oh yeah, and where was the media's sense of decency? They couldn't stop disecting Obama's family life, parading those kids on tv for days!
Media: take a long hard look in the mirror!

Todd   July 9th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

Trash....Pure Trash It's absolutely ludicrous what the dems will prop up for a candidate. Hussein and the Mrs. are just products of the rotten chicago political machine. He's about as capable of the presidency as my canary...

Peter E   July 9th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

I will believe it when I DON't see it. But with Obama's record of doing and saying anything to get elected you can bet he'll be parading his kids again and again for months to come!

Ardnuas   July 9th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

Thank you Mrs. Obama for being a REAL patriot.....instead of the fakes and phony people who SAY they are!!!!

bestmick, martinsburg WV   July 9th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

can you believe this skank might be in the white house?

David, Silver Spring, MD   July 9th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

How nice to think that we can have a first lady who isn't wearing a politician mask, who represents citizens because she is herself a citizen.

This country was founded on the principle that ours is a government of, by, and for the people. Somewhere along the way we've lost that principle, and have started to believe that we must be governed by people who are different from us, with a strange, scripted way of talking and a bizarre, robotic, empty way of behaving.

Michelle Obama is a woman who looks, talks, and acts like us because she is one of us. Just as it's supposed to be.

Adam   July 9th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

How many fluff stories are you going to run about Obama CNN? You have at least one a day. Seriously, she's said this a million times, its not news. Please stop with the bias CNN. MSNBC and FOX are bad enough, no need to join them.

Ian M   July 9th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

Nice to have a lady who has real opinions. Unlike Laura Bush and Cindy McCain.

Angela   July 9th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

Oh dear.....the republicans are going to jump on this one too – Michelle is not on board with her husband being president. Add it to the list. It is all in how this will be interpreted, or misinterpreted, but it is still out there for people to talk about.......

gary   July 9th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

THERE'S THE OTHER HALF OF A BIG JOKE. O.B. IS SUCH A CON MAN. YOU LOST MINDED YOUNG MORONS DONT KNOW ANY BETTER THAN TO VOTE FOR AN UNKNOWN ,ARROGANT,HYPOCRITICAL GREENHORN. AMERICA GETS WHAT THEY ASK FOR.

California Gold   July 9th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

I think she's a good Mom. Who of us can't relate to wanting to insulate our young children from a situation that has the potential to be high profile ugliness of politics? If anything, it may remind all of us to think before launching lunatic rantings and hateful rhetoric. Then again, those who can't control those tendencies don't care if children get hurt.

not important   July 9th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

Cindy McCain is rich. I can"t believe that Cindy and John McCain would call Barack and Michelle Obama elitist.

Jeff   July 9th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

She said no because she wanted to protect his behind...not the kids.

usa   July 9th, 2008 4:57 pm ET

now, this woman is a REAL patriot!we understand your sacrifice and will do whatever we can to support you and your family!the girls were great in their interview, but,i understand your concerns.republicans are so hateful!

Dina from Clinton, WI   July 9th, 2008 4:57 pm ET

I admire Michelle Obama as a mother and a wife. she seems to have a wonderful healthy family. she is a good role model for the rest of us American mothers and wifes that have to juggle responsabilities at home and at work.

T.D.T. Supports Change!   July 9th, 2008 4:56 pm ET

The funny thing is, she has given this same speech every time she speaks but it is only now getting attention!!!!!!

Media Circus!!!!!!!!

What!!!   July 9th, 2008 4:56 pm ET

Should've, would've, could 've all mean you didn't. Why didn't you stand up for your opinion?

Cynthia   July 9th, 2008 4:56 pm ET

I loved the interview with the girls (they are both cute and articulate) and didn't see anything wrong with it, but understand the Obama's position of protecting the girls.

John B. From New Hampshire   July 9th, 2008 4:55 pm ET

can anyone say family values? :)

Jan   July 9th, 2008 4:55 pm ET

I am relieved she thought it was in the children's best interest that she exploit them–Funny, I thought she was using them to promote her husband. She, at least, does not seem as angry at bitter at America now that BO has secured the nomination. from now on.

Not proud of my country   July 9th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

Michelle, your girls will be just fine because you two are such great parents! It's a shame the rest of the country has not caught up to you yet but your setting the example and they will, one day. BTW I am still not proud of my country for obvious reasons.
