New McCain ad: Hispanic immigrants are 'God's children'

A new McCain ad is aimed at Hispanic voters in key battleground states.

(CNN) – John McCain is airing a new ad - in which he calls Hispanic Americans “God’s Children” - in his latest bid to win over that key voting bloc.

The spot comes amid a major push on that front by the presumptive Republican nominee, including private meetings with community leaders, Spanish-language radio ads, the launch of regular campaign conference calls with Hispanic pastors, and speeches at high-profile gatherings like this week’s address at the League of Latin American Citizens and next Monday’s speech at National Council La Raza - two of the trifecta of major Latino conferences McCain will make an appearance at this cycle.

The new ad – which will air in Nevada, Colorado and New Mexico, all neighbors of McCain’s home state of Arizona which are all heavily-contested states this cycle – features comments from a summer 2007 debate in which the senator praises the service of Hispanic veterans.

“My friends, I want you the next time you're down in Washington, D.C., to go to the Vietnam War Memorial and look at the names engraved in black granite. You'll find a whole lot of Hispanic names,” McCain said in remarks included in the 30-second spot.

He praised the service of members of the military serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, including “some of the few thousand that are still green card holders who are not even citizens of this country, who love this country so much that they're willing to risk their lives in its service in order to accelerate their path to citizenship and enjoy the bountiful, blessed nation.”

“So let's from time to time remember that these are God's children. They must come to our country legally, but they have enriched our culture and our nation as every generation of immigrants before them,” he concluded.

McCain faced tough criticism from many conservatives early in the campaign for his support of comprehensive immigration legislation, and had shifted on the trail to an enforcement-first message that resonated with GOP primary voters, who listed immigration as among their top concerns.

The campaign has released both English and Spanish-language versions of the ad.

Former Atty Gen. Alberto Gonzalez was thrown under the bus by the Bush administration and as a private citizen he hasn't been able to get a job. You think the Republicans care after they used him.

McCain will not win the support of the immigrants so he needs to stop making a weak effort. What about the recent article in which he states that they need to learn English and that we shouldn't have to post signs in stores etc in Spanish and English?

Wow, McCain is such a hypocrite and will do and say anything to try to get elected. It won't work. Americans, Hispanics included, are much smarter than this.

Ugh! Enough pandering. Maybe a smart political move, definitely not sincere. His campaign has completely been taken over by the GOP. And to try to reach out to evangelicals by calling Hispanics God's children? What about the Hispanics who don't believe in God? Are they "God's children"? I believe the term "children of God" comes from the Bible and refers only to Christians. Bob Barr is starting to look better and better.

This is just the usual Republican ruse of wrapping any policy in "God" that is likely not in the public interest – even those who hope to become citizens but who have come here illegally.

We all are God's children. However, what McCain wants is voters for him -and low-cost labor for corporations. Laborers that are often easily abused and be a wedge to undermine all worker protections and negotiated wages which were intended to actually see that people got treated like "God's children".

The innocent Iraqis who continue to die every day in this illegal war we pushed upon them based on lies are God's children, too – but not potential voters – so they are expendable.

"Beware of Republicans who espouse God" is the modern version of "Beware of Greeks bearing gifts".

    Haven't seen the ad,
but I'd like to believe that all Christians, African-American, Anglo American, Asian American, Hisanic American, Native American, etc. (that was in alpha order for those who didn't catch the way I listed the ethnicities)

By the way, I made need to see a shrink real soon as I see the Dow is now under 11,000. First time in 2 years. YIKES!!!
Where is Phil Gramm when you need him to help with all of those construction jobs (that aren't going on because of the economy) that so overwhelmingly hurt the Hispanic community? He's either sitting at his desk at UBS counting his money or on his way to see his psychiatrist.

John McCain will do and say anything to get a vote...including stealing and lying...he is only PANDERING to get the Hispanic vote, but as we have seen time and time again...John Mccain does not care about Americans. Black White Latino Native Asian or any other...unless you are RICH. Do not be fooled, this man thinks America is mental. Remember how McCain voted on MLK Day...he voted NO.
this man is trying to become President for the good of his lobbyist, not the good of the country!!!
DONT LET JOHN MCCAIN FOOL AMERICA, LIKE BUSH AND CHANEY DID IN 04

John McCain should do what all red blooded old americans do at his age; 1) Move to florida and do his part in tyeing up traffic or/and get a job as a Wal-Mart greeter 2) Play bingo.

I grew up in Colorado, and while I am not Hispanic, lots of my friends are. And I am kind of insulted that this ad even came out. Why would he ever have to suppose to say "they are God's children." Who even thinks they aren't? Sounds to me like in Huck Finn, when Huck says, "I suppose even colored folks love their families too." People took offense at that one. And now McCain is talking the same way. Why does McCain think that all Anglos in these states have to think about their friends that "yes, they ARE God's children." Why does it even come up?

Yeah, yeah, they are God's children, who are also lawbreakers. McCain's surfeit of Christianity blinds him to the evil these people perpetuate. Hell, they, aided by the Democratic Party, even vote. Enough!

Oh my – just more previews of what's to come if we Americans make another mistake like we did in 2000 and 2004. This guy is so far out there, you have to wish it really is meaness instead of simply lacking in the brains department.

We MUST have change in '08.

What is he going to do next? He's trying to run on the Bush Reagan past to become President of a nation of "whiners" according to his closest friends. In what country has McCain lived lately? Has he failed to notice that most of the folks in the country, the hard working folks, can't but gas to get to work? How can he stand behind the failed policy of Bush and continue to send money to the very tyrants he claims to dislike?

The truth is that McCain is just literally over the hill. After all, it is his generation of Republican that has us in the present mess. It's a little difficult to blame Clinton now. The Republicans have had their chance. We now need to return to sanity. We need our civil rights restored, those rights that Bush and the Congress are responsible for ending. We need a Supreme Court that cares about the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. We need a Congress that is not afraid to face the voters.
They called Al Gore a flip flopper. McCain would be if he could remember how he voted in the first place. McCain can hardly complain about a broken Washington when he is the reason it's broken.

As I remember, Jesus said he died for all mankind. How does McCain feel about advocating the killing of so many of God's Iragi children? Yes, God is their God too.

WITH A POTENTIAL TREASURE TROVE FOR HIS PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN , McCAIN IS NOW GETTING THE MONEY FROM THE GOP TO MOUNT A GOOD AD CAMPAIGN . BUT HE HAS MADE TOO MANY GAFFES AND PEOPLE ARE WONDERING IF HIS AGE WILL BE A FACTOR IN THE CAMPAIGN.. HIS POTENTIAL VP CHOICES
ALREADY KNOWN, WHILE OBAMA'S CAMP HAVE BEEN TIGHT LIPPED ON HIS CHOICES. McCAIN THEREFORE WILL WAIT FOR OBAMA TO MAKE HIS VP CHOICE BEFORE McCAIN MAKES HIS..
IT'S A LONG, LONG WAY TO NOVEMBER . BUT THIS ELECTION
IS GETTING TO BE THE MOST WATCHED EVENT IN AMERICAN ELECTIONS BECAUSE IT ALREADY IS HISTORIC. WE THINK IT IS OBAMA'S TO LOSE.

McCain, Obama. Build the fence. If that doesn't work, dig a moat. if that doesn't work, put in a mine field. If that doesn't work, station the National Guard on the border with orders to shoot to kill. Stop the invasion. Oh, and deport anyone who hires an illegal along with the illegal.
