Obama is up over McCain in the latest CNN poll of polls.

(CNN) - As the dog days of summer set in and Americans take a break from the daily political band-and-forth, a new CNN analysis of several recent national opinion surveys show Barack Obama with a sizeable lead over John McCain.

In the latest CNN Poll of polls, the Illinois senator holds an 8-point lead among registered voters nationwide, 49 percent to 41 percent, with 10 percent still undecided.

The 8-point spread is up 2 points from a CNN poll of polls released one week ago. It is double the margin it was one month ago, days after the prolonged Democratic race ended.

Election Center: Check out CNN's electoral map

“Obama's lead has grown a bit over the course of the past month. It is still relatively slim, but it is certainly solid," CNN Senior Political Researcher Alan Silverleib said. "The burden is on McCain to find a way to shake things up as we enter the traditional summer doldrums.”

The poll of polls consists of three recent surveys from Gallup, CNN/Opinion Research Corp. and LA Times/Bloomberg. It does not carry a margin of error.

The race for the White House is getting a bit closer. The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows Barack Obama’s lead over John McCain down to a statistically insignificant single percentage point, 43% to 42%. Prior to today, Obama had enjoyed at least a four-point advantage every day since Hillary Clinton dropped out of the race over a month ago. This is the first time his support has fallen below the 45% level since May 31.

You do not need to look polls to know it is not good for McCain. If the economy is the issue in election, at the current moment, there is no hope for McCain. The stock market is tanking, housing price is sinking, and oil price keeps going up, there is no way for Republicans to win. Do you notice that Obama campain is limiting his exposure to public? The Obama campain would love to hide Obama from public if it was possible to avoid any major gaffes. If there are no major gaffes, he will win. People will vote against Republicans.

However, the economic bad news cannot keep getting worse. When stock prices go down a lot, bargain hunters will get in and the stock market will recover somewhat. The same thing is applied to the housing prices. When people start to use less gas, the oil price will moderate. A lot of developing countries have got into the trouble because of high oil prices. They will use less oil too. Therefore, getting out all the bad economic bad news now might actually help McCain in the Fall. If the gas price goes down below $4 in the Fall, people might feel better even though it is still very high.

Like a football game, the Obama campain is playing very conservatively. They have a lead. They are trying to play ball control offense, not fumbling the ball away. On the defense, they are trying to stop quick scores by the opponent.

If the bad economic news keep popping up, Obama will win by default. It is a very good strategy. In fact, the Obama campain might find a way to avoid debates with McCain, or reduce three debates to one or two. Please mark my prediction. If the situation is like now, and if Obama is still leading conformtably in polls, his campain will try to reduce the number of debates or avoid the debates all together.

However, if the economic news become better, or if there is another war, or a terrorist attack, mood can change very quickly. The strategy does leave an opportunity for McCain who can show he does have a plan for the country that is different from Bush.

Actually, for you slow liberals -I'm being sarcastic. Wise up, America. Snap out of it. This guy is a radical leftist that will destroy America. Don't believe it? Look how socialism has ruined Europe. No coincidence that UK,France Italy,Germany and Denmark are electing conservatives. Gee....I wonder why.

Wise up, America.

Why do so many of you still feel the need to bring Hillary into it? She's out of it, you should be happy now, though I'm not. But give it a rest, find another dog to kick. If Obamites want him to win so bad, how about campaining against McCain for a change? Good gawd, you guys are all still so rabid about Hillary you can't focus. This is one reason that even as a life long Democrat, and black man, I won't be voting Obama in the fall.

Tim   July 11th, 2008 5:17 pm ET

First he Gramm calls us whiners and says that we are in a mental recession. Then he says he meant leaders were whiners, not Americans ( a lie), but stands by his recession comment. Then in an interview with The Washington Times, Gramm then says that "Technically, a "recession" is two straight quarters of negative growth; so technically, we may in fact not be in a recession. Or we might, but don't yet know it." He is a top Economic advisor for McCain, but doesn't speak for him. Now McCain admits he knows nothing about the economy. This is a sad state of affairs.

I hope John McCain reads this one, this could be one of the reasons he is falling behind in the polls, Nice guy..who is not a very good liar, but he knows the only way to win this one, is for us just to be his friend.

Well, I am a Republican who was going to vote for Hilary. Sadly I think it will prove to be true that the Democrats and the media totally screwed up with their obvious bias in backing Obama. He is clearly a waffler and has no experience. McCain would not be my choice, but I will make sure to vote for him in November – my vote will be against the elitist Obama and that horrid un-American wife of his.

I am amused at all the celebration of the ignorant Obama supporters, notice most of their postings are riddled with misspellings...lol. Does anyone think the terrorists won't come after us hard with such an inexperienced yahoo in office? What's he gonna do when Iran bombs Israel or worse...schedule a tea party?

This could just mean that the blue states will become more blue and McCain could win with electorial votes and not popular votes. From polls it looks like Obama will be popular on the West Coast, the Northeastern United States, around the Great Lakes, Colorado, Hawaii and New Mexico, but hated everwhere else. Obama will not be able to unify anything and that may include his own party.

If you are that bad off that you want our country to be a socialist country, obama is the one. If you want this country to be about capitalism, and getting 'ahead' yourself, McCain is the one.
for all the naysayers & Bushhaters out there, jus remember we have been free from attack since 9-11. The liberals in congress have fought Bush every step of the way on this, but eventually give in. The democratic congress has wasted more time and effort fighting Bush than doing anything constructive for our country, right or not. Given a chance, they will ruin us.

Burt   July 11th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

I agree with Willkel....stated it perfectly. I honestly hope that when voters turn up at the polls they will really consider what they are doing. I'm not thrilled with McCain-but he has proven leadership, and he is not going to do anything that will hurt America. Obama is an unknown that will destoy this country. He is a radical....and he will act like a radical. We can't elect him. Don't do it America.

He may still be ahead in poll (getting right wing votes and losing left wing votes) but his campaign contribution is dwindling after his right wing supports. Right wingers do not donate as evident from McCain's campaign contribution, they rely corporate donations.

After voting for FISA, Obama would need to rely on telecom companies and other corporate bodies for his campaign donations.

Remember "Religious Right is neither".

Interesting fact...

Every problem that Obama has such as Jesse Jackson comments, he keeps changing his position on issues depending on what people want to hear; such as his surveilance vote.

As time goes on and he continues to open his mouth he will continue to show his true color. And people will see him for what he is. Young, inexpereinced, not-consistant with what he says and what he does.

This guy is bad for our country.

Cheryl   July 11th, 2008 4:58 pm ET

I'll tell you why Obama's lead isn't bigger...the United States is essentially a Republican country in philosophy. That is – despite the constant shouting about being "Christian", they are loathe to the idea of taking any responsibility for each other. Anyone who proposes social problems, the kind that are found in every other western nation, is branded a communist. The most frightening thing you can say to an American is that he can't keep every dime that he earns for himself to buy more and more things that he doesn't really need.

It's greed and a mistrust of anyone who isn't exactly like ourselves that is keeping Obama's numbers down. Figure racial hatred into that and it's an astounding credit to Barack Obama that he is leading at all. I believe he will win but it will be an uphill battle against what is worst in the American character.

Susan,NC   July 11th, 2008 4:58 pm ET

I listened to a news cast that said, Obama needed to appeal to the African Americans and stop his Cosby tough love. I thought that the President of the United States had to appeal to all races. He is not just running for African Americans in the Country. He is running for all men, women and children. This could be one of the most historical moments for our country. However, ignorance aside we need to come together all races and pick the right person. This is not about one race or another, it is about our future.

Bitter - New Orleans, LA   July 11th, 2008 4:57 pm ET

Obama's 49 plus McCain's 41 equals 90. Claiming that the other 10 percent are undecided is to ignore the other candidates. Look, what matters is the state by state electoral polling. And so far, that's showing Obama blowing McCain out of the water. The latest Zogby electoral map shows Obama with 273 electoral votes already secured or at least leaning his way. The CNN electoral map shows Obama with a major lead.

Whatever the reason, the national polls simply aren't reflecting the state-by-state numbers.

ONLY 8 points?

Shouldn't Mr. Swagger be ahead by a whole lot more? Guess you're not doing your usual swiftboating elitist media/politicians/liberals.

I voted for Hillary because she was the MOST QUALIFIED and hooray because she was a woman. BO had no business running for prez. for lack of experience. All he has is packaging, swagger and smooth-talk. (the Iraw speech at the anti-war rally doesn't count).

Hillary for VP..somebody's gotta show him how to run the country. And by the way, you never heard Jesse Jackson bad-mouthing Bill Clinton. Bill could connect with the AA's…perhaps because he grew up with them and yes, "could really feel their pain." Can BO relate to the AA's that way??? He seems pretty elitist to me…seems that he attempts to connect with the AA community only when it's politically expedient .

The press in all its' infinitive or infantile wisdom decided years ago that they wanted the democrats back in the leadership positon in congress the election a year and a half ago and in both houses of congress and in the White House this coming election. So, following the strict rules of the New York Times, they make up poll statistics and vary them according to the flow of things showing that the public is totally behind their choices for each office. The guys in Chicago picked their boy for the White House job and looks like they found another patsy from Nebraska to fill the veeps' position. Unless the elections are controlled right on down to the local precinct level, and I don't think the Chicago mafia has that much oomph with the state organizations like they do the press, we won't really know what the public really thinks until the election actually takes place.

It'll be interesting to see the final results.

Why no report on the poll showing Obama actually up in AZ....by 3 points, but still up! If McCain isn't going to carry his own state he should give up now.

J Williamson   July 11th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Don't fret Republicans – the boiler-room boys will come up with something good. Remember the Swift-Boat attacks on John Kerry? It will be something along that line – only better. Will the American people catch on and see through it? Based on past history I'd have to say no.

This is not meaningful. Wait for October to conduct these silly polls. Go away Obama!

Sandy   July 11th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

To the people who counting on McCain, get over it..the reason why you see the numbers the way they are is because people want something new and fresh and ready for a change from the old garbage of the Bush.

Ted from Washington, DC   July 11th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

This needs to be repeated.

McCain's voting record for Veterans benefits shows what he really thinks of them:

McCain: ‘I Received The Highest Award From Literally Every Veterans Organization In America"

The recognition McCain has received from veterans groups is not "high awards" but failing grades:
Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America gave McCain a grade of D for his record of voting against veterans. (By contrast, Obama got a B+.)

Disabled Veterans of America noted McCain’s dismal 20 percent voting record on veterans’ issues. (Obama had an 80 percent.)

In a list of "Key Votes," Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) notes McCain "Voted Against Us" 15 times and "Voted For Us" only 8. (Obama voted for VVA 12 times, and against only once.)

What do you say about the charater or moral fiber of a man who cheats on his wife and using his friends to find a "love nest" where they could go and not be seen.

What do you say about the charater of a woman who would have a tryst with a man old enough to be her father, who is married with three children.

Having stated that:

What do you say about the American voting public that will vote for this man because of the "Party."

Women In California For Obama   July 11th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

All I have to say is if America decides to place McCain in office it deserves whatever it gets. Democrats might as well say good bye for the next 20 years because HRC will NEVER EVER be elected. She is finished make no mistake. Some of you might as well get used to it. The sooner you deal with it the better. Should she decide to run in 2012 (with the way she has divided the party) WE will be waiting. However, I hope she does and her opponent is Jeb Bush. It won't even be a contest and the rest as they say is history.

Charlotte   July 11th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

In a year that should have been a run away victory for the Democrats. How dismal for Obama. A lot of people do not watch CNN, or any major news for that matter. A majority of people do not blog. They will vote in November, and if Obama thinks he will win by a landslide, he is sorely mistaken. I hope everybody remembers how Gore and Kerry lost. It had more to do with their choices for VP, then you might think. It may be a do nothing position, but it is a hairs breath away from the Presidency. After Cheney, it may very well be the most important decision these two will make. Gore was ahead early on by about the same margin as Obama is now. People talk about Hillary being old Washington and in the same breath suggest Dodd as a VP? Obama is not Gods Gift to us, he is a typical politician. I will write Hillary Clinton on my ballot in November. I hope anyone who is thinking of staying home, will show up and write her name on their ballot. ( if allowed by their state.) At least show up and vote your conscience! Show the DNC your displeasure at their decision. Voting is a freedom we cannot afford to lose. We fought for it, we deserve the right to vote however we choose. DO NOT STAY HOME on election day.

Justin   July 11th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

I sure know that I'm taking a break from the "band-and-forth" [sic]

Seriously CNN, consider running a spellchecker before posting articles, or at least hire a monkey. I am always shocked at the poor editing on this site.

Ken   July 11th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

I'm in agreement with some of the other posters who wonder: just who are the 41% that actually support a continuation of the abysmal [R] failure of the last 7 years. What is wrong with the people in this country?

What do we do with a child that has burned their hand on a hot stove twice (2000,2004), but readily wants to put their hand on the stove yet a 3rd time (2008)? Is the child so mentally handicapped that it doesn't even recognize the harm being done, and instead thinks its fun? Or is it so retarded that despite the memory of the burn it cannot control its own behavior to avoid the mistake again. Either way the child should be kept away from the stove by more competent people.

So I say to the 41%, please stay away from the voting booths in Nov. Save yourself and the rest of us from the harm you do; you are not competent to vote.

Jim Haynes, SC   July 11th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Texas T   July 11th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Yeah Obama, ya right... Wake Up People... Ask specifics on his vision, oh wait it is change... Change what??? Slanted reporting again CNN... All you people who want "change" move to Europe... I guess you all like some Socialist, Minority favoring, unexperieced, tax-raising, muslim who will cower in the face of these radical people... If you want no morals and values, move to Europe... If you believe in sticking to your guns, the Ten Commandments & The Constitution, take another look at Obama brother, he is none of that... Oh wait, maybe we need to get more Democrats in Congress so their rating will be 5%... Pathethic sheep you are, listening to CNN, do some research on your own like intelligent people do... McCain is not my choice, but a far better one than crazy Obama!

cherrystrawberry   July 11th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

Dont they get it over there?

Lyn   July 11th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

Rosa Birmingham, AL   July 11th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

I hope McCain doesn't win because then we will be sc%$%#@$ for sure. Eight more years of the same old same old. Ugh. That having been said, these polls are fairly useless since the vote is done by electoral college not popular vote. Look at the map, it is hard to see how McCain can lose even if Obama wins the popular vote. I suggest everyone shine up your combat boots and get ready for a really bad time.

Rick FL   July 11th, 2008 4:44 pm ET

Obama's lead is great news for our nation. It shows we will not let the media make the decision for us. When comparing the two campaigns, it seems the media barely covered McCain's top economic advisor telling struggling Americans that it's all in our head and that we're a nation of whiners. If it had been Obama's campaign, we would have never heard the end of it. Just look at the coverage the media gave to a non-story of Obama's consistent message on Iraq. Truth matters.

Obama '08

Marv...   July 11th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

I'm still wondering how did McCain make the same mistake twice of accusing Obama of not voting to declare the Iran militant group as a terrorist group, when Obama had written legislation stating just that fact. Media pasted it off as a misspeaking, gaffe or just not knowing the facts on McCain part, but I'm starting to see the latter years of Ronald Reagan in McCain. This is not Good. Not Good at all :-{(

HRC3655   July 11th, 2008 4:43 pm ET

JP   July 11th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

I am a republican and no fan of Bush. Change can be for better or worse. Two of the most important abilities the next president must have are being able to work with the other party and fiscal restraint. McCain has proven that he posses these abilities. Social security, medicare, and medicaid programs if left untouched will destroy the country financially. Adding government run healthcare will only destroy it sooner. Can any one tell me what Obama has achieved that makes him worthy of being President. When i ask people this question I never get an answer.

Leah DiMarco, Texas   July 11th, 2008 4:39 pm ET

CNN – PLEASE have your Political person there at CNN update your Electoral Map. The date keeps changing on your map but the state colors have not changed for a very very long time and they are not updated. Someone needs to take a look at the map and update it, New Mexico has been leaning toward Obama for a few weeks and you still have it as McCain. Also Montana is not McCain lean it should be a Toss-up and other states are out of date. Thank you.

Loyal Democratic Voter   July 11th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

Yes, Uncle Sam and he is up by 6 points in the Daily Gallup Poll. What is your point? He has consistently led the national polls by an average of at least 4 percentage points. But none of that really matters. Look at the electoral map and how he is doing against McCain in states that are traditionally Republican. McCain has issues that I don't believe he will recover from before November

Ed North Carolina   July 11th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

It is no surprise. Did you see him mentally check out yesterday on the Viagra/birth control pill question? The blank look on his face said it all. We all age differently and age should not be a deterrent to selection of a qualified individual for President, but "senior moments" like that are telling. Right now its telling me there is no way I could vote for him for President, Senator maybe, President no.

Bette   July 11th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

I do hope hope that Obama wins. I will sit back and watch the crying for the next 4 years; but I doubt very seriously that he is going to win. Polls mean absolutely nothing people. You have seen this time and time again yet you pay attention to it. Just like you think Obama is going to do anything special. Good luck with that one.

Ryuken   July 11th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

ANGRY OLD MAN   July 11th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

McCain's record is becoming crystal clear and his "straight talk" is becoming jumbled, confused and inconsistent with the facts.

Obama will be our next President, but judging from the complete failures of the Democratic Senate and Congress over the last two years and recent votes to approve another $161,000,000,000.00 in war funding as well as the protection of the unconstitutional wire tapping by our "government" we don't have much to look forward too.

I fear the Dems in power will be just business as usual and more of twiddle dee or twiddle dum. We shall see.

Now lets keep it that way through November.

People ask such ignorant questions on here – the ones asking if the people supporting McCain are "sleeping" or "crazy" are repulsive. The bottom line is – people support Obama based on their personal beliefs, and so do those who support McCain. Either can have legitimate reasons for supporting (or not supporting) both.

The only thing that is scary is those who vote based on misinformation and hype and not on facts and values.

Polls don't give as clear a picture now as later. Independents will have their say as things get closer. The one group that isn't represented is the young college students. They aren't home taking surveys as I have. They are on the go and text / cell rather than have a traditional land based phone at home. This group represents about 5% of the unknow electorite. If they are as excited as the primaries, it could have a huge impact.

The problem is – it's hard to tell !

David   July 11th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

I like the results - but a poll with "no margin of error????" Now that's confidence. Is that what the writer meant to report?

MTK   July 11th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Clint- What's scarry is people supporting Obama when it is certainly clear he has no understanding whatsoever of international relations and we're in a dangerous and fragile time in that regard. He has literally no experience, he hasn't been to Iraq in years, but talks about it like he knows something, he wants to raise taxes(on corporations too mind you) when our econ is sagging and we need corps to hire and spend. That is what's scarry. If you want to see our economy plummit, vote for Obama. It's not a democrat or republican thing. It's just awful economics on his part.

I have to ask, is McCain really this arrogant that he seems to think he is some how entitled to be president. Like any job you put your resume on the table and go for it. We have seen many times people with so called experience are not up to the job. Because they have too many bad habits from all those years I.E. John McCain…Sure Sen. Obama may have had some so called questionable ties. But McCain A true politician who has lain down with and and played true Washington politics look at all of his record. Not just the parts that make you feel good about wasting your vote. War captive fine president no way he appears mental.

With his record on women issues how could any woman even consider this man, HOW.
He could not even recall his voting record on a issue about women when a reporter asked about it this week . Shows what’s important and who’s not.

David Newport, OR   July 11th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

How biased can CNN be?
You have posted 1948 blogs on Barack Obama
1778 on Hillary Clinton
and only 1068 on John McCain

No matter how much you shove Obama on everyone it's not going to help. The fluff articles are ridiculous. These stupid polls are laughable.Try writing about his stance on issues. Oh wait you can't because all the speeches he made to get nominated are now crap. He is not for change, he is like anyother politician. Tell the Americans what they want to hear to get elected, then do what I want. This isn't change. this is just more of the same dressed up in a puppet.

Waiting to see if he will debate McCain before making my mind up on who gets my vote. But as it stands right now, it's not Obama.

Eddie   July 11th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Let's all get real here. The L.A. Times poll used in the CNN poll of polls was taken over 3 weeks ago and had a 12 point margin of victory for Obama among registered voters not likely voters which most polsters would consider and outlier among all polls taken. Could you be any more biased in what polls we choose for a poll of polls?

Once we see some debates(which Obama keeps refusing to do), McCain will do much better. Obama knows he's not good at debating and will have a tough time actually explaining his debacle on foreign policy and taxes when he's actually debating against someone who knows foreign policy and he has to explain why he wants to raise taxes during a tough economic time. That is, if Obama accepts an invitation for a debate finally...other than MSNBC or some ultra liberal group like that haha

As someone who plans to cast their vote for Obama this worries me. Bush has a horrible rating, Congress rates even lower, and McCain has run an absolute horrible campaign and Obama is only up 8% (which is a CNN poll...most other have him ahead by 4%). I don't think this is great news for Obama.

Makes me worry McCain may pull it out.

Wow! This is a ridiculous example of biased reporting. Rasmussen reports daily tracking numbers, which are averaged over several days for accuracy, show McCain at 42% and Obama at 43%. If anything the numbers are getting closer after Obama lost some support over FISA.

Sean from Orlando   July 11th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

every week CNN has some bad omen for someone....because of some poll

D   July 11th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

McCain's story for the past 30 years, including in his autobiography as that he gave the names of the 1967 Green Bay Packers to his POW captors. McCain campaigning in Pittsburgh this week in TV interview with KDKA said he gave the names of the 1967 Pittsburgh Steelers to his POW captors. How convenient – "Straight Talk" McCain substitutes the Pittsburgh Steelers into his POW story for the first time while campaigning in Pittsburgh. Liar.

Chuck   July 11th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

How do you justify using the terms "sizable lead" and "still a slim lead" in the same report? Is the spread between Obama and McCain sizable or slim?

Or are you trying to say the lead may be slim but because it is double from what it was a month ago it is sizable?

Vicki   July 11th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

I have never feared for the future of this country more than I do this election year. If Obama gets elected, the America we all know & love will dissappear!! We will become a socalist country and it will be all downhill from there.

I don't WANT higher taxes
I don't WANT universal health care
I don't WANT to bow down & kiss the terrorists butts!

NO OBAMA

I'm not thrilled with McCain either but he's the least of 2 bad choices.

Brad   July 11th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Again with this double standard??? If the comments of McCain's "advisor". Phil Gramm, are attributable to John McCain. THEN, it is only logical that the comments of Obama "advisor", Rev. Wright, are attributable to Barack Obama.

The Obama camp cannot have it both ways and frankly, neither can the McCain camp.

jimmie   July 11th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

This is stupid ,,,,we have not even got into the General Elections yet and CNN is already calling it OBOMA's WIN.... Get a real life..
The general public will change thier minds before we get to the polls.
I wish the media would stop trying to predict the out come and trying to sway the general opinion of the public.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   July 11th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

It does make me wonder how close of a race this will be. How close is it in all of the states? If there are lots of close races in states, that could be bad for Obama if he doesn't win them.

JD   July 11th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

You know, I'm a pretty staunch republican, and I know several others that would have polled in support of McCain that haven't participated in any of these polls they're talking about. So I wouldn't put all your Obama eggs in one basket when election time rolls around. Smooth talkers don't always mean what they say, folks. The time for realism and not idealism is upon us.

I can't understand why CNN keeps posting selective polls. By any decent stretch of intelleligence, Obama, the great Orator (for me he is a biggest con man this country has ever raised!!) is still leading 4-5 % points. Doesn't he should be leading 20 points at least. Obama supporters are in denial. Come november, the ERs will be filled up with these nut cases.

michelle   July 11th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

FROM A HISPANIC , A WOMAN AND PUMA.....

Bill could connect with the AA's...perhaps because he grew up with them and yes, "could really feel their pain." Can BO relate to the AA's that way??? He seems pretty elitist to me...seems that he attempts to connect with the AA community only when it's politically expedient .

VIVA HILLARY....Hillary for VP or no vote to BO

JRB   July 11th, 2008 4:18 pm ET

I'm voting for John McCain. As a small-business owner, John McCain's tax plan will benefit my family and my local community.

Obama's idea of change is higher taxes, which will result in fewer jobs being created..

I'd like to see the poll figures rather than have some news organizaition digest and spin it for me, thank you.

J Houston, TX   July 11th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Do these people not get it? We are 5 months from the election still. This race will be neck and neck. Personally, I don't care about any of it unless it includes term limits on senators and reps.

I say, what's wrong with a smart rock star president who people will listen to. Aren't we sick of old white men who have their own little boys club? Who have no clue about global cultures, who keeping making money for their oil buddies, who can't even sign on to the Internet, for God's sake? How can you talk about technology being a solution when you know nothing about the technology of the last 30 years? OK, excuse my rant, but really Americans!!! Wake up! EX-Obama Supporter Independent   July 11th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Obama's probably going to win but no longer with my support. I will also not vote for McCain obviously. I hope Bob Barr's campaign picks up momentum. I will be voting for him. Obama has commited himself to change. You can't do that when you're backing an unconstitutional bill drafted by the Bush Administration. Obama hasn't just lost all the Hillary supporters, he is losing an adamant supporter in me. As much as I want to see the disgrace and humiliation of the republicans I won't let those ends justify the means of backing a candidate who has shown that he is not a champion for the constitution that I thought he was. I will vote my principles. Obama has destroyed everything he built with the hope he gave us when he ran. I saw an America ready to get taken back by a good man. I wasn't detered by the rediculous reverend wright nonsense. I wasn't detered by the clinton attack machine. I wasn't detered by McCain's rediculous fear mongering. Obama lost my vote through his own actions. He doesn't have the judgement he claims he had. DailyKos is right, he is a sellout. No change, same old bs game. I couldn't vote in the primaries beacuse i'm an ardent Arizona Independent and independents can't vote in the primaries unless they change to republican or democrat, which I won't do. Now I'm glad i didn't vote. I'm glad I didn't send him any money either. I'd be getting buyers remorse right now. I have no faith any longer in either the democrats and republicans. I will be an even more ardent independent than I was before.

Harold   July 11th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

I sure hope this poll is meaningless. McCain does little to motivate my urge to vote, but if Obama gets in (which he most likely will by a lot), this country is quite screwed.

Danny   July 11th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

I am sure that Americans will dump Barack. let him go back to Chicago. Vote John McCain.

LNJ , Houston   July 11th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

While McCain supporters can make small of the polls, eg...it's only July....or "barrack should be farther ahead, given the problems of the Bush adminstration"... still, the most impressive thing that lends geat credibility to these polls, is that Barrack has consistently led in each and every last one of them. As far as the detractors who like to cite other polls that show Mccain actually leading, they'd better keep in mind that the more highly recognized polls earned their reputations via historical accuracy records. No this is not to say they were accurate in every instance...just more reliable that the others.

Republicans have won 7 of the last 10 Presidential elections. This race will get closer. People say they will vote for Obama in a poll but come November they will vote for the Republican. The dirty tricks party will pull out all the stops and we will have another four years of Republican rule.

Supporting Obama is supporting the country going the right direction

Any one but Hillary for VP   July 11th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

All the more reason to pick Hillary as VP! She isn't needed to win and she'd be a disaster in the Obama Administration.

K   July 11th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Wouldn't that be 'ocho' in Obama's America?

BTW, Obama...are you fluent in Spanish? How 'bout French? Italian? Farsi? Hmm...better get crackin' on those Rosetta Stone books buddy, so you can bone up and pander to the Mexican's some more!

If you do eventually reach numero uno, try fixing our schools so that our upcoming generation(s) of jr high and high schoolers can construct a sentence properly (in English, not Ebonics or Spanglish)and multiply by 2 without using their fingers before you worry about whether they can speak a second language! Heck, they can't even speak our primary language!

And finally, having been in the military for many years and lived in the Philippines, Japan, Korea, Germany, Italy, and Portugal, I know a little about other countries and unless you are traveling in an area that caters to tourists or near a US military installation, good luck finding all those people you claim can speak English or any other language besides their own recognized one...they are few and far between!

Stop berating us for being stupid you snob and realize that English IS the global language! Once you do that maybe I'll even join the ranks of those 8 points! LOL, nevermind, that will never happen. I don't want either one of you in office...I need a Mitt Romney fix!

Mike in Newport, Kentucky   July 11th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

What's sad is that 48% of the public that was polled is not considering the complete and total lack of experience that Sen Obama has in national and international politics. Wake up America, I can repeat CHANGE over and over as well, does this make me qualified to be President? I think not.

Art, Del Mar, CA   July 11th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

The media is trying to keep this thing closer than it really should be. They keep on acting as if McCain is a serious candidate. They ignor his obvious memory losses and failures to recall even his won statements or remarks. They let him off the hook in order to generate ratings for the continous coverage...while we wonder .."What's wrong here?", and why is it so close?"......So we watch each day...and the media makes money..

Malcom Little   July 11th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

McCain's numbers will bounce back as soon as we all stop whining. Remember, America: Your problems are all in your mind.

Who needs money, when we have positive thinking?

Fred   July 11th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

Funny, no one's asked my opinion. But right now since Obama seems to be supporting the policies of Pres. Bush, I'm good to go with him. However, I wouldn't count McCain out.

Chris, Denver CO   July 11th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

Don't worry, McCain. Your campaign is only undergoing a "mental recession." Just don't whine!

TonyInKentucky   July 11th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

I'm still wondering what the McCain people are thinking.

Watch the interview about his birth control coverage vote and tell me that's a candidate you can vote for.

John McCain is not competent. Experience is meaningless if nothing is learned from it. Stop this scam!!!

Landslide of Reagan/Mondale proportions probably. We will see a double digit lead by September.

Look, the differences between the way the campaigns are run, the energy of teh two men themselves as well, are like night and day. There is NO excitement about McCain. He couldn't even beat GWB.

LIke the CNN poll is not baised!

wycliffe, NJ   July 11th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

I changed my vote, when McCain refused to take a stand on Viagra and Birth Controls

Brian   July 11th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

Well, first of all I laugh at the CNN poll of polls, because anyone who watched the primaries seriously knows they were wrong more than they were right. But secondly, I hope Obama takes this lead to heart and stops changing his position and his mind about key issues like the intelligence bill he voted for today that he said previously he would oppose, his changed stance on withdrawing troops from Iraq, his decision to forego public financing which he also said he would not do, etc. For those who had never heard of Obama before December, but joined the bandwagon this spring, and are just *now* learning what Obama is really like, I have just two words: typical politican. And a third, because of all his denunciations of typical politicians: hypocrite.

Marshall   July 11th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

Another observation based on past elections–

Poll numbers generally tend to tighten as the election draws near, not the opposite. Plenty of candidates who have enjoyed seemingly robust pre-convention leads have lost November elections.

Former g.o.p.   July 11th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

I'm not whining, but after Senator Graham's put down of Americans, Obama should be up by 20 points or more.

JIM...TX   July 11th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

While these early polls don't really mean much...they do show a consistancy in Obama's campaign strategy an that he is slowly pulling away from McCain...

Joe Reg   July 11th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Again, I say this, it is a pattern and America is fed up with the way the Bush repubs are running the country. It is high time for a change from the current administration to a new direction. The thing is Mcain is following the same economic package of the current administration that are failing American family on a daily basis. We have high costs of oil, food, lost of jobs, housing, wars, economic slow down, deficits and so on. Enough is enough and the American people are not going to change their mind aobut those things.

No more Repubs this year.

Go Obama go!

Obama 08 & 12.

kelly thompson, staten island, ny   July 11th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

i cant believe its only a 10 point lead; anyone even considering voting mccain for president (bush's third term) has to be out of their minds

vanz   July 11th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Past experience tells me national polls are not meaningful. I'd love it if Obama won, but don't we need state-by-state polls and the resultant electoral college implications before we can start to party?

Big D   July 11th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

The relatively thin margin for Obama has a lot to do with how the two are covered in the media. Every gaffe or awkward statement by Obama or a surrogate is endlessly covered, but not the same for McCain. Even when there's no mistep by Obama, it's reported as if it is (as when he was consistent on his position on Iraq, but the media decided he wasn't and covered it that way). But McCain's calling Social Security a disgrace is barely covered, and even the 'Whiner' statement by his economic adviser, is not covered to anywhere near that extent. And on and on. When the media really covers each campaign equally, I expect to see a huge uptick in the polls for Obama.

billylee8   July 11th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

First debates can't come soon enough.

observer in NY   July 11th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

when are we going to get over this fascination with national polls? Didn't we learn in 2000 that the national vote does not pick the winner? The Electoral College picks the winner. We are having 51 simultaneous state (and DC) elections, and in order to see what is really going on, you have to look at each state and its electoral votes, not the national poll!!

Jeronimo!   July 11th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

This is a landslide in the making; Obama up 15 pts. by months end.

doggreensector   July 11th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

Obama 10 point lead is a joke. This guy should be 40-50 percent ahead of MCcain in that it is a horrible year for Republicans. However when the fall comes most people will see what a nightmare Obama really is. This is a guy who can't even decide to whether he should stop smoking or not and now he has sold out his base with the war. Just another liberal with nothing new and most people will see him for what he is soon enough. On the otherhand McCain is not much better with the exception he won't completly ruin what is good about America, Obama will. I would rather vote for Daffy Duck.

Marshall   July 11th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

I'd love to do a content search to see just how much more publicity CNN has handed to Obama than to McCain. When they do deign to mention that there is a candidate besides for Obama in this election, it's usually in the context of "Bad news." CNN, please report the issues more responsibly and let us make up our own minds as to who is the candidate best equipped to serve as our next president.

Tony   July 11th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

Only 8? McCain has been horrible so far...and it's only 8? Danger signs are around for Obama. This will not be the primaries where people were voting for Obama because they hated the Clintons so much. As Hillary learned and Kerry learned...it's terrible to be ahead at this point in the campaign.

chris   July 11th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

You Republicans live in a dream world if you think you have any prayer of winning in November. The economy is in shambles and the party in power is always bounced when that is the case.

Jozee   July 11th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Hey CNN,
I'm shocked and amazed that you would put forth a ticker so complimentary of Obama. Usually you step all over yourselves to be sympathetic to John McCain's poltical gaffes and dwell on them for a news cycle at the most. If the shoe were on the Obama foot, days and days would be devoted to keeping the story alive.

Last night your panelist, David Gergen, could barely get his comment out regarding the misguided statements made by Phil Gramm's before he talked about Michelle Obama's "$600 earring" statement. Your bias is so obvious that your slogan, "the most trusted name in news" is sounding more and more hollow.

Just a modicum of fairness to Sen. Obama would be so refreshing.

mitchell hussein martin   July 11th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

How many times will CNN show a "Bad news for McCain poll". There has been at least 5 of them in the past 20 days.

I'd like to see Obama's speech at Invesco. I bet he could sell out the Pepsi Center as well as Coor's Field with a simulcast on big screens. Parking might be a nightmare. There's no way McCain could even think about filling up a 75,000 seat stadium.

Right now, Senator Obama is looking good in those states.

By the way, Montana is really close and Mississippi and North Carolina are within 4 or 5 points. It could be a landslide for Senator Obama.

But, I'm very pleased with this most recent poll.

NC Man, that's just wrong, but I hope you feel good about yourself. And we'll pray for you just the same.

Matt, Manchester, CT   July 11th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

The "Yes we Scam" Obama zombies eat up this almost daily CNN posting of "troubling polls for John McCain."

If Obama fans could actually articulate some of the specific proposals the Senator has that they are in favor of, I'd be amazed.

Yes you can? No, you really can't, nor should you.

White Independant   July 11th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

WE ARE ALMOST THERE. There is something happening when people vote not just for the party they belong to but the hopes they hold in common – that whether we are rich or poor; black or white; Latino or Asian; whether we hail from Iowa or New Hampshire, Nevada or South Carolina, we are ready to take this country in a fundamentally new direction. That is what’s happening in America right now. Change is what’s happening in America. You can be the new majority who can lead this nation out of a long political darkness – Democrats, Independents and Republicans who are tired of the division and distraction that has clouded Washington; who know that we can disagree without being disagreeable; who understand that if we mobilize our voices to challenge the money and influence that’s stood in our way and challenge ourselves to reach for something better, there’s no problem we can’t solve – no destiny we cannot fulfill. YES WE CAN!!!
WE ARE THE ONES WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR!!!

It is pretty sad 42% support Obama. He stinks and is full of it!

Been there, done that   July 11th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Only One Great Man   July 11th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Lets just totally ignore the Rasmussen and Gallup daily tracking polls that show it to be only a 2 to 4 point race, and let’s high light the outlier poll that shows a large lead for Obama. Please stop the bias. When the Time poll came out showing only a 5 point lead, you didn’t even post a story on it. Every McCain story on the Ticker has a negative slant. Try to be an objective news agency and not an editorial page for once. It is obvious you are trying to swing peoples opinions and not just report the news.

An 8 point lead in July when Obama should be up by 15+ is nothing to brag about. How bad do things need to be for a Democrat to win in this country???

It will be a landslide in the fall because they are not polling the folks that don't use home phone numbers. The 20+ crowd that will be voting for Obama in November only use their cell phones.

Obama '08

This is great news for John McCain!!!!

It's pretty sad that 41% of this country supports McCain. Have they all been sleeping for the past 8 years?

GREAT!

YES WE CAN!

Uncle Sam   July 11th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll today has Barack Obama's lead over John McCain down to only a single percentage point, 43% to 42% – statistically insignificant. This also marks the first time that support for Sen. Obama has dipped below 45% since the end of May.

I see a landslide coming this Nov

Ross   July 11th, 2008 3:50 pm ET

Obama has consistently polled higher than he achieved in the primaries. I hope that hold true. We can't afford this clown.

Susan   July 11th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

Nice to see America waking up! Obama 08!

Coming soon to a poll near you: double digits. If I were John McCain, I'd start listening to, and memorizing the words to Stevie Nicks' song "Landslide." You'll soon be living it....
