Obama may sponsor a NASCAR car.
Obama may sponsor a NASCAR car.

SI.com has learned that for the first time in history, a major presidential candidate may sponsor a race car in NASCAR's premier series.

According to sources, Barack Obama's campaign is in talks to become the primary sponsor of BAM Racing's No. 49 Sprint Cup car for the Pocono race on August 3. Details of the agreement are expected to be worked out over the coming days.

Full story from SI.com

UPDATE: Campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said no agreement has been reached.

"We get a lot of good ideas every day but there are no such agreements in place at this time," she said.

Sounds like some people are "Bitter" because Hillary or McSenile didn't have the good sense to do something great like this.

NASCAR Obama??? Yeah, like a Hippy McCain.   July 11th, 2008 3:51 pm ET

Will they have to install wheels on the roof of the car too, you know, so the driver is ready the next time Obama flip-flops?

A Political Campaign in it's essence is a Marketing Campaign. Just thought I'd educate you a little.

Mike P is Commenting Everywhere   July 11th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

Come on now, folks. How can you not vote for a guy who thinks outside the box. That's what we need.
It should be cool, he should attend too. As Conan said it, regarding the crowd there: "Meet your first black guy"!

Oh Brian, don't be so negative. And if it does crash into the wall, so what? The RNC & everyone who's posted a negative comment about this, will still be beating themselves for not thinking about it, first.

If Obama wins it's because he's running a "marketing" campaign instead of a political campaign.

If he loses it's because the American people aren't buying the votes he's selling.

Vote Security in November. Vote McCain.

this is smart   July 11th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

I'm 50/50 on this

Sure this boasts his so called "rock star" status, sure people will take it as a form of elitist, but...

This move is simply brilliant and the kind of "out of the box" thinking that makes Obama such an innovative candidate. Why spend millions in every state on local ads that get aired durring few hours when you can spend less on your logo being broadcast on free TV already viewed by millions nation wide? Logos on NASCAR is one of the top yielding brand advertisement.

Pay attention folks, this is why Obama has so much money, he's brilliant at running a campaign, brilliant at fundraising, brilliant at CONSERVING MONEY, and brilliant at how he spends his money.

This is the kind of man we need in washington, somebody with fresh ideas and methods that isn't hinkered down by the typical over spending and bad investment as if money is grown on trees kind of spending that our typical politicians have their mindset in.

isaiah   July 11th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

SOME OF YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN HIS SPEECH ABOUT WE'RE NOT A BLACK AMERICA, NOT A WHITE AMERICA, NOT ELITISTS, NOT RED NECKS (SUCH CRUDE WORDS) WE'RE ALL AMERICANS! It's a shame some of you don't realize an effort to UNITE when it is staring you in the face. I gave my donations without limitations-he may use it as he sees fit. And to all of you saying why is the car a Toyota, do you realize that there are just as many Toyota and Honda plants employing Americans as there are Chevy etc? In fact Chevy and Ford OUTSOURCE their jobs to Mexico. Get a clue.

Donna in ID   July 11th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

Matt: honestly   July 11th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Bulldog...I like it and could not agree more. People are looking for an excuse to not like Obama, so that is what they use. Or they pull some bull saying HE is racist, or arrogant, or he does not have answers. If people would learn to USE THE INTERNET they would see that he does have answers to all of their questions.

Veteran for McCain   July 11th, 2008 3:01 pm ET

I wonder if his racecar will go in REVERSE, since that's what he tends to do on all of his previously stated issues!!! I hope it finishes last, actually second would be fine for me. That's what will happen in November anyways.

Obama 08   July 11th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

Even people who don't support Barack would have to admit that he is respectfully asking for votes from everyone. He doesn't campaign in Democrat-friendly areas only. I believe that Obama sees winning just one person's vote as worth the trip.

Real Change.

Obama 08!

matt   July 11th, 2008 2:54 pm ET

Yes richard-head A SONGBIRD SANG IN VIETNAM many of the Japanese companies have plants in the US. They are still based in another country. This is not supporting an American company. Toyota has plants in the US so they can make money off of sales in the US. Don't believe they are doing this for the sake of employing Americans. It is just not so. Now shuffle off and vote for your non-patriotic soothe sayer and enjoy the disaster that would be his presidency.

ERD in NC   July 11th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

Sponsoring a race car should help him become a better leader. Right?

Jeff   July 11th, 2008 2:53 pm ET

This is really a bad idea from someone that apparently doesn't know anything about NASCAR. That raceteam isn't comepetitive at all, and putting his name on it will essentially be putting his name on a loser. Not very smart if you ask me, and I'm a Democrat.

Jackie OHio   July 11th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

I will write H.R.C name on the ticket, Obama Has proven that he isn't for change but for lies and flip flop he lives with regret on what decitions he makes like the interview with his daughters. After the damage is done then he regrets no room for regret from the pres of the united states make a decition and shut your mouth and live with it.

WE LOVE YOU HILLARY!!!! ARE COUNTRY IS IN TROUBLE WITH EITHER OBAMA OR MCCAIN

Lake Michigan   July 11th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

So Allan, what you're saying is that Bush is the greatest president who ever lived, and that it is okay that we ticked off most of the countries in the world. And that $4.79 a gallon gas is a fair deal. And that the value of the U.S. dollar is in constant decline. Yep, I guess the last 7 1/2 years were the best of times, according to you.

Jeff   July 11th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Just read the pro-Obama posts. They are a hoot!!
The choices we have for this election cycle are absurd. I'll be staying at home in November (for the first time ever) rather than support either one of these clowns.

Obama My Friends!!!   July 11th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Okay so here is my question! If Obama lacks experience, lacks judgement, flip-flops, is arrogant and an elitist....Then how in the heck did he manage to beat Hillary Clinton in the primaries...If she's so wonderful, and so experienced, and so great!!! Then why is she begging for a VP spot and not preparing to be the first women nominated for President next month in Denver...Better yet, how did she managed to loose almost twelve primary races in a row...These are the questions that Hillary Clinton supporters can't answer...Everyone's mad because Obama isn't using the traditional blue print to run for president...He's doing things no one has done before...I think the Nascar thing is smart...

Rick   July 11th, 2008 2:33 pm ET

I'd love for someone to explain the hundreds of comments calling Obama out as "arrogant". Is it that he is intelligent and well spoken and that's not what we want in a president (see the last 8 years), or that he's a black man and we just feel that it's arrogant for a black guy to seek such social mobility? And don't bring up the bitter comment, because that shot at governmental ineptitude has been so thoroughly taken out of context no one even remember what he was talking about.
So, seriously. Explain this arrogance or which you speak. What should he do differently, other than not have gone to Harvard?

Patrick Henry's ghost, Ft. Myers   July 11th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

Methinks he should also plaster his slogans and image upon the local public conveyance, particularly the horse drawn ones. His visage and vapid agenda would be quite at home amongst the dung and entomological seekers of such.

IndependentTogether   July 11th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

There's so much hatred and bigotry (from liberals and conservatives) in these posts. You people ought to be ashamed of yourselves.

I'm not a NASCAR fan by any stretch, but I do know that the people who enjoy it are Americans, too. And Obama is right to do whatever he can to bridge the gaps... it's consistent with his message of inclusion and unity.

steve   July 11th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

this is real relevant to being the leader of the free world. (sarcasm)

i like how people think this is a good "advertising" move. advertising is for *selling products*, it shouldn't be for selling leaders. leaders are supposed to CAMPAIGN, you know, discuss their platform, their stances on issues, their experience. oh wait- obama has none of those things. there's a very distinct difference between campaigning and "advertising". if you vote for someone because he used your dollars to paint his face on a race car, you need serious help.

KenB, MI   July 11th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

not a bad idea...but like an earlier post it will be a blooper if the car is foreign...when you think about it hmmm this may not be a good idea...too commercial...why not put a picture on JONES Soda...

and when it comes to those who want to complain about the FISA vote answer the question of how many electronic attacks does this country have per day...from lets saaaaay China...the "Enemy of the State" scenario is plausible but more paranoia if anything...your neighbor is probably more concerned about whats going on in your house than the government is.

Paul   July 11th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

I want to ask Belle2 and the rest of the nay-sayers – what could the guy do to make you happy? This is pandering and demeaning the presidency into a popularity contest, but it is apparently okay for thousands of people in WV to vote for HRC because they don't feel like Obama is "in touch" or as Pat Buchanan put it: "he's too faculty lounge." If a candidate can be rejected as too elitist, too aloof, not a good enough bowler, then this DEFINITELY IS A POPULARITY CONTEST, and HRC was using that in the primaries. So, in a popularity contest you play the personality game and this is a perfectly fair (and very smart) move in that contest. It's not designed to appeal to me and those who like the sound of a President from the "faculty lounge" but I respect it and cheer it on.

Seems he is becoming more of a rock star figure than anything that should be considered Presidential. How come his campaign can sponsor a car in race but can't elp out Hillary with her debts? Oh yea....he's only out for number one and will do anything to get there. No thanks to this stagemanship too.............this is not Presidential material at all. Give him a job at the UN and let him save the world.

Great promotion! It's a ONE RACE deal – Not a full blown sponsorship. It will get tons of free press in all media outlets. A much smarter way to spend money than on commercials alone.

AND – Obamas donations are primarily MANY small donations made by individuals. McCain will be primarily financed by the RNC – which receives its money from large corporations & special interest groups.

You've got to wonder how much of McCain's support is coming from the US oil companies that have robbed the country blind for the last year and sent the economy down the toilet...

Three words for you haters .....YES WE CAN!

TheTruthHurts   July 11th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

This is not a good development if true. BTW, beware of Jesse. His mere appearance on Fox is questionable and other than the hit to his representation, he's probably not sorry what he said at all. Wanting to castrate a rival (i.e. by going on Fox) is not the sign of someone on the team.

Mike - Texas   July 11th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

Change we all can believe in!!!

Will, NJ   July 11th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Andy J, NY   July 11th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

For all you morons calling Obama "genius," i suppose you fail to see this is a purely political ploy to gain votes, not based on policy, but base on how "cool" he is by sponsoring a car in nascar.

How is it that you can call this guy anything but a typical politician. If anything, he's the ultimate politician, playing the game just like everyone else before him.

This guy is so phony and typical, and yet people fall all over him. I used to think sheep said "bahhh bahhhh", now its become clear they say "obama, obama."

During the primaires, Obama simply did not go to certain states like West Virginia and Kentucky- 1 visit to each state, and then complained that these were racist states.
Sponsoring a NASCAR will not do the job. Talking and dicovering Average Joe Sixpacks concerns could.
Will he go visit these people……………..NO.

This is a great idea by Obama's party. At first I wasnt too fond of it but now I love it. This kind of advertising will bring in secondary and third vieweres by highlights, pictures, etc. Money better spent than a 30 sec tv ad. And it's only for one race not like he's sponsoring the season.

Its great because he is reaching out to a base that is traditionally not Democratic but many are upset with the Bush admin.

Why do people shun creative advertising? The man is asking for change and this is different. His campaign money is supposed to be spent on his campaign yet McCain supporters still find reasons to complain because their candidates party is not creative.

Ridulous. What does this have to do with the presidential race? I know these targeted, "rednecks" may not be that bright according to Obama's handlers, but surely they have alfready heard of him.

Is he going to drive the car? Will he be sitting in the car?

I think I will now change my vote to Pennzoil or Quaker City. Just as relevant. Unless, of course, I can get his picture on a leather jacket, maybe thumbs up like Fonzie.

NoBushThirdTerm.com   July 11th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

Sounds like a good idea to reach a specific demographic - the ones that Hillary claimed to have the lead in... however, the only bad angle on it (one I am sure that the McHypocrit crowd will use) is that such events are the ultimate in wasting energy...

That said, those folks are going to race anyway, so he might as well help sponsor one of them. Who's the driver? Maybe he could get on some popular driver's vehicle?

Matt: honestly   July 11th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

Belle, you keep saying he is arrogant? How? What has he said or done that is so arrogant? Beat Hillary fairly? He has never said anything untrue to try to win votes. He has tried to get different demographics familiar with his name. That is not arrogant

Jeff   July 11th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

Why is this on the Ticker? CNN has neglected to post a story on Obama's flip-flop on FISA so that we can comment on it, but they put this insipid story on? More soft soap for Obama by CNN?
In October, Obama promised to help filibuster an update of FISA that would grant immunity to telecommunication companies that had cooperated with President Bush's warrantless wiretapping program. Now he votes for the measure? Bill Richardson's tired explanation that the "changes" that were added to the bill allowed Obama to vote for it. What a bunch of hogwash. The bill was not substantively changed. It is basically the same bill. This should underscore Obama's inexperience and quite frankly his incompetence at this time. A few more years of actually doing something in the Senate might season him enough to be president, but right now he is all ego and arrogance with no substance.

Dave in Houston   July 11th, 2008 1:49 pm ET

He is brilliant! Barack Obama says he wants to be the President of ALL of America, and by getting involved in NASCAR he proves it.

I think NASCAR is the second-worst sport of all (only behind soccer), but those are about the two most popular things going. (Pro football (American football, to you ferners) is my thing.)

Courting a group that I would just as soon write off shows why Barack Obama should be the President and I should just stick to writing to CNN comment boards.

Obama is like Paris Hilton. nothing but a promotional bafoon.

I really think if he wants respect from others (apart from the ones who have already drunk the kool-aid) he needs to tone it down a bit.

Anyone else got Obama overload fever ?

How tacky–like the butt slap he gave his wife on national TV.

How about some respect and dignity for the office of the Presidency?

sponsoring a car that gets poor mileage and just goes in a circle for hours. What a waste of energy!

LET ME MAKE SOME THINGS CLEAR:

1. Not everyone supporting Obama is educated or latte drinking, whatever that is.

2. I have donated to the campaign and I know this is a great idea to reach a certain demographic of people who are undecided (that's common sense)

3. Some of you must understand that your not going to agree 100% of the time with Obama. He has told you that any times. It is impossible to have a candidate that is your mental clone. However, MOSTof his ideas and plans you WILL agree with because they are FOR the American people's best interest at heart.

Anyone who denies that is just plain stubborn and not willing to LISTEN and READ BETWEEN THE LINES.

We need a leader in the White House, not a commericial. Put Hillary Clinton's name in nomination in August and send Obama some commerical endorsements – where he's better suited.

Molly   July 11th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton started this long journey competing against each other in a political one on one race for the opportunity to be the democratic candidate for President of the United States. Their campaigns turned the elections on its head causing riffs in families torn between who to vote for; I know this because the same thing happened in my family. However if you really listened to their debates you would see that the interests were common between both candidates. I personally think that a ticket with both Obama and Clinton on it could do nothing but win. I also think that since they both wanted such similar things out of the time that they were to spend in office, and then they would work twice as hard if elected as most presidents whose vice president you never hear about because of the small amount that they actually do. The American people have come to have low expectations of the people that each president chooses to have the vice presidency office, and how great would that be if the vice president actually accomplished something worthwhile. The sad thing is, if you were to ask the people of the United States the main thing that they remember about the vice president it would be that he shot someone during a hunting accident. According to a poll by The Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, only 69% of people even remembered the name of the vice president in 2007, while Clinton by the same poll is as well known as Arnold Schwarzenegger at a staggering 95%.

The power that both of these candidates have behind their words spoken of change is incredible and gives voters a light at the end of the tunnel. Change is what both of these candidates wants and is shared by the wants of the people. I think that what more change could you ask for than to have a black male as president and a white female as vice president two things that have never been done before.

With The approval rating of the president being at an all time low and the economy struggling to keep afloat you see many republicans turning to the possibility of a democratic party for presidency being a good thing. One of McCain’s top surrogates and lifelong friends Phil Gramm just remarked that the people are suffering from a “mental recession”. This is nothing short of insulting and he should really spend some time visiting the people who are losing their houses to foreclosure and the people who are working everyday for minimum wage. McCain is now telling the people that the comment of his lifelong friend is not the opinion of himself, but what does that tell you about the people he will choose to run the offices? Do we want someone put into a potentially powerful position in office, just to hope that they don’t actually do anything to screw up things worse? I don’t blame McCain for the comment specifically but I do see a problem with the people he chooses to “help” him make decisions.

From days before Obama won, there was talk about Clinton being on the ticket with Obama. Why would that be a bad thing? Were their ideas so different that they would hurt the ability for change? When you hear them talk you hear the urgency in both of their voices, of the need for change. We need change not talk! Both candidates realize that. With Obama asking us to believe in the change that he could bring about in Washington and Clinton’s never give up attitude as well as her experience, which would be a possibility for change that I could believe in.

JMP - Chicago   July 11th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

I think it's a great idea to reach a lot of people. If he would get that kind of coverage by sponsering a Little League baseball team he would go for that too and no body would say a thing bad about it so why say bad things about sponsering a race car. Life is too short people, relax and have some fun. Stop taking everything so seriously.

During the primaires, Obama simply did not go to certain states like West Virginia and Kentucky- 1 visit to each state, and then complained that these were racist states.
Sponsoring a NASCAR will not do the job. Talking and dicovering Average Joe Sixpacks concerns could.
Will he go visit these people.................NO.

I think sponsoring a NASCAR team is a great idea for political candidates to advertise.

However, I don't think that sponsoring a Toyota was the best pick. They are the only foreign manufacturer in NASCAR so it seems a little odd of a choice for Senator Obama to make. I wonder if his people even thought about checking what manufacturer the team uses before they chose to go with BAM racing.

Go McCain in '08!

This is disgusting. I want to know about his policies and what he will do for America if he were elected. Is he running for president of a frat house.. I am glad he does not want Senator Clinton as his running mate. Is he using his own monies to sponsor that car? Oh great now I get it. Things got tough for the BAM they have gone on "sabbatical", Sounds like a dream team to me. Also I take it since he is planning on sponsoring the BAM then he is involved or becoming involved with QTRAX?

Mike of Michigan   July 11th, 2008 1:20 pm ET

Okay, I definately have mixed feelings on this.

The side going wow, lame is the side that knows Nascar isn't a sport. I mean, it is pretty unpredicatble and intense. Oh man, left turn.. AHH WAIT!! another left turn!.. oh guess what? and another left turn. lol

The side that loves this is because no event would be better for this type of advertising than watching a car turn left for 3 hours.

This is actually an impressive and different form of advertising. NASCAR has probably one of, if not the, biggest fanbase in this country. So we all know that people will hear about this. Impressive.

TerryDo   July 11th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

So, is this what all those fundraisers are fo,r trying to put his name out there in the race car population.

Well at least this time, Obama will be using a race car and not a race card!

Obama maintained a frenetic schedule of fundraising events this week, courting top Clinton bundlers and soaking up millions of dollars for the DNC.

Obama supporters who believe any effort to retire Clinton's debt should take a back seat to gathering money for Obama's fall campaign.

Interesting, don’t you think, Obama supporters want Clinton bundlers to donate to his fundraising and yet Obama supporters don’t think they should put any effort into retiring Clinton’s debt.

Question: Why don’t the top Clinton bundlers just donate to Hillary’s debt and then neither Clinton's bundlers nor Hillary would have to deal with Obama and his campaign ingrates.

Cincinnati girl   July 11th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

Brilliant. Obama knows how to stretch a dollar! Use money to sponsor a car instead of buying ad spots. This way, the story about him sponsoring a car gets to run on all the major networks and on local tv during the actual race. Not to mention ESPN . What a way to grab the attention of the younger male demographic that won't watch the race but will see the highlights on ESPN.

Belle2   July 11th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

Obama fans listen to some common sense. He is running to be President of the United States of America, the most powerful job in the world. This is not a popularity contest; it should make little difference if you like him or not, only that he is not qualified to do the job. There is no substance here; he has no experience and his arrogance makes GWB look humble. How could anyone with one ounce of common sense think of voting for this man. I don't like McCain either; but he is not so arrogant and he has experience. This must be a nightmare; the voters better wake up. I don't know how this country can survive four more years of such arrogance.

Nice work. Obama is going after the white vote aggressively. All his new adds show him with white people only. Also, Mr. Jackson's comments were probably planned by the Obama camp to show that Obama is not always seen favorably by blacks in order to get white voters on board.

Barack is acting so un-presidential – Nascar ??

Blake   July 11th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

Finally a reason to watch grown men turn left for 3 hours!

Andy   July 11th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

Now that is funny.

I have never heard of anything so stupid in my life. If he is going to sponsor something, it should be something for our homeless kids,
or sponsor kids to get an education. Obama and his campaign people need to get a grip. Obama is buying his way into the White House. Shame on Us As Americans to even consider this man to be
our next President.

T GUY   July 11th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

This is how it should be done. Be everwhere and let the message be heard. Good strategy for Obama..

Former HC Girl   July 11th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

I guess he is trying to win back all those red necks that are clinging to their guns. Fat chance!!

mk   July 11th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

Probably a much better use of funds than buying on-air commericial time when you think about it. Will receive air/news time, spectator time, & print time in many publications as well.

May - Arizona   July 11th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

I hear Mccain will resigh in August due to health reasons for another GOP nominee to face Obama.!

Check NPR!

Matthew   July 11th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

More and more, everything this guy does makes me less inclined to vote for him. This is the presidency for crying out loud. He's making a mockery of the whole thing.

Marie   July 11th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

Fearless leader. Will be a great president.

arun   July 11th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

okay. Obama loses points from me on this. Yuck !!!

Phil in KC   July 11th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Cool! That is definitely reaching out to a demographic that, by and large, does not ordinarily support the Democrat. It is a bold move and I commend him for it. It's definitely thinking outside the box.

RJ, CA   July 11th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Apparently Obama has more money than he knows what to do with - YOUR money. This snake oil salesman never ceases to disgust me!

Herman in LA   July 11th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

OH Yes we can....

Gooooo Barack goooooo

Alex   July 11th, 2008 12:51 pm ET

Wonder who will be the first to spin the 49 car? If Obama's name is on it, he'll be a target for sure.

whiner   July 11th, 2008 12:50 pm ET
