Sen. John McCain joked that exporting cigarettes could be a way of killing Iranians.
Sen. John McCain joked that exporting cigarettes could be a way of killing Iranians.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's Foreign Ministry has condemned remarks by Republican presidential candidate John McCain that exporting cigarettes could be a way of killing Iranians.

The state-owned English language IRAN daily has quoted ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini denouncing the remarks as "inappropriate" and describing McCain's attitude as "regretful."

Last week, McCain was asked about an Associated Press report that the U.S. exported $158 million worth of cigarettes to Iran during the Bush administration in spite of restrictions on U.S.
imports.

"Maybe that's a way of killing them," McCain said. He then said that he was joking.

Iran has officially announced that it supports neither U.S. presidential campaign but does hope the election will bring a change in U.S. foreign policy.

Seeing that many AMERICANS smoke, we have a horrible relationship with a threatening Iran, and he has a reputation as a war-monger — it is clear that McCain has no clue about politics.

GHM   July 13th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

McCain what the hell is going through you mind. Isn't our Country in enough trouble at home and abroad. Your continual jokes, mistakes, mispoken words or whatever else you and your staff want to call them is a disgrace for anyone but someone running for one of the highest office is beyond belief. There is no excuse for the kind of language you use. Age has nothing to do with your kind of remarks.
You are totally unfit to be in the posotion for running as a presidential canadiate. Mr. McCain no one can help you out of the messes you put yourself in. You spoke the words no one but yourself. Why don't you just give it up. Retire from the Senate, give someone younger with new ideas a chance. Go back to Arizonia and spend some of the millions your wife has the same way as she charges up to $750,000 in one month on her credit cards. Maybe she should spend some her wealth on getting you speakers lessons and having someone tech you how to control your tounge. Get out McSane before it's to late.

JforObama   July 13th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

Sorry but no matter how bad a group in a nation is - it doesn't mean the entire nation is bad. There are innocent people in IRAN that do not view the same as the terrorists - does that mean they should be killed off for what the criminals in their nation think and feel. I am sorry but I do not want to be blamed for a crime that my next door neighbor or a man two states away from me commits. So to me, the comment or joke McCain made was inappropriate, mean, and hateful.

Anyone that believes this joke is funny - is sick in the head. You need a dose of WWJD (what would Jesus do). He definitely wouldn't make a hateful comment like that.

Charlotte   July 13th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

Jan, Yes of course you're right. Who cares what they think let's just bomb the hell out of them because they don't agree with us. Under John McCain we can only hope to be the last country standing.

Ha, Ha, Ha!
McCain DOES have a sense of humor. Pretty funny really.

Kathy in Oregon   July 13th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Taken in CONTEXT, there's nothing wrong with McCain's remarks.

Cigarettes KILL!

Since when is it inappropriate to point this out?

I think it's funny how Obama supporters go to great lengths to explain away their candidates constant verbal gaffes, but refuse to cut McCain a bit of slack.

What a mean-spirited bunch of hypocrites the democrats have become.

What a sick thing to say! What bothers me is that Its the first thing that came to his mind! I sincerely believe that McCain is too OLD and even more too damaged from his prison time to have clear and objective understanding of foreign policy issues.

debbie in PA   July 13th, 2008 5:36 pm ET

I'll give McCain a break on this one. We have all made jokes that once out of our mouths we realized were inappropraite. What I cannot give him a break on is the 1970s foreign policy. We live in a world where many nations now have nuclear capability yet the fact remains any strike on the U.S. would result in annihilation of theaggressor so do we really think this is going to happen if we find a way to stay out of each other's way. I spent my childhood under a desk during air raid practices just waiting for the USSR to strike- thank goodness we waited and didn't start a fight with them since look how that worked out. We have to move into this next century and realize that we are not the only country capable of attacking with serious consequences but since we are the only one with a huge arsenal then why not use diplomacy? It reminds me of bullies in the playground. The really tough kids never had to make threats and the tough but also good kids knew how to get along without fighting.

jon,philadelphia   July 13th, 2008 5:35 pm ET

Just the way this war monge speaks you just know he wants to go at it with Iran. We have negotiated worse situations and the right man in the white house can handle this. Remember the Cuban missle crisis. Critical sit. defused with not one shot fired. Obama can do it, McCain can't.

Bob   July 13th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

It is so unfortunate that folks continue to confuse countries' people with their leaders. Iranians are some of the most gregarious and polite people you will meet anywhere in the world. Once you are a friend of an Iranian, you are a friend for life. But we think of Iranians as being like their insane president or their current ayatollah, under whose thumb their lives are severely limited. Let's look into an international mirror. If we judge other countries by the actions of their leaders, is it any wonder that most of the world looks upon the United States as being a country full of bullying hypocrites? They don't know or see the deep kindness present in most of us. Yes, we have some real jerks too, just like every society, but these are the ones that give the reporters something to write/talk about, and so their presence is highly inflated. Truly, by far most of us, and by far most in Iran, are very decent and loving people being misrepresented by lousy leaders.

for a man who is so lucky to even be alive, mccain's value on human life,is reprehensible.iran has every right to condemn mccains' comments, and the american people should join with them.perhaps then the PEOPLE OF IRAN and THE PEOPLE OF THE USA could get together and demand our governments ratchet down the rhetoric on each other, and begin serious negotiations to create an environment of relative peace,in a violent part of the world.this in everyones interests, but, few seem to care, besides me and obama.

Today's young Americans had better wise up and pay attention. For if John McCain is elected president, there is no doubt his refusal to be a diplomatic leader will send them straight to war. Obama is supposedly the less experienced candidate, but at least he shows that he has the maturity, understanding and wisdom that McCain obviously lacks.

Also, I too disapprove of CNN's coverage of the presidential race. Everyday I see headlines that portray Obama in a negative way while comments and gaffes made by McCain go ignored. At least be impartial in your coverage CNN. After all, you’re supposed to be telling us what to think ABOUT, and NOT what to think.

It really doesn't matter who you talk to no one can believe McCain is within 40% of Obama. Of course Americans for the most part don't care what the world thinks of them despite the fact most of the world is truly hoping they can pull themselves out of the mess they're in and take on a leading role in the world.

McCain has basically cast himself as one step lower on the intellectual scale than Bush and that is no easy task even for someone who may be bordering on dementia. Could it be possible Americans are gearing up for a three-peat in November.

Why is it that the mainstream media isn't dissecting this incredibly offensive and asinine attempt at humor? This outrageous statement is consistent with the generally demeaning Republican attitude towards people of Moslem faith everywhere and should be denounced by every responsible government that sets a value on human life, irrespective of religious denomination. Shame on you and your racist, bigotted cronies, McCain.

juan carlos, NYC   July 13th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Let's see . . what story gets more traction in the media these days . . .

A. McCain setting off some inflammatory comments to Iran about killing them off wityh cigarettes. This sure is a great way to start diplomatic negotiations with a country that is criticized for wanting to do the same thing to Israel. Is this the kind of cynical leader we need in the White House??

OR

B. Obama telling Bernie Mac to clean up his act as diplomatically as possible.

The media is really getting off coming down on Obama.
Does the media really want another 4 years of war mongering cynical global bullies (without a clue) or do they just enjoy stirring it up against Obama for media attention??
Shame on you!!!!!

Barack Obama is not perfect, who is?
But, he will be respected all over the world. Everyone can see that.
Please, vote for Barack, he will be remembered as a wonderful President.
We here in Europe are verry afraid that he will be shot before he is elected and that would be a disaster, not only for America but for the whole world.
I follow these elections day by day from the Netherlands.
Barack is realy give me hope for the future. For me he is the young Mandela. A man with a good hart and wise solutions for many pronblems in this world. He is a uniter, he can bild bridges between the Western and Arabic world. Between muslims, jews and christians.
America dont make the same mistake like you did 4 and 8 years ago!
Barack will end youd wars and keep you safe by diplomacy that will have more succes and bring peace all over this world.
Give Barack Obama the chance to change for the better.

With love from the Netherlands.

This is pathetic and disgusting language coming from a presidential candidate. We don't need this mindless hatred and sabre rattling at a time when tensions are already high. This comment alone should be reason to prove that McWacked is not fit for the job of President of the United States.

He does not in any way shape or form speak for this American citizen when he speaks of killing Iranians. He is a sick man who needs help. His comments are as disgusting and pathetic as the kook running Iran and absolutely no different.

If Iran is such an enemy and a threat, the tobacco companies should be prosecuted for doing business with them. Just another sickening aspect of this crooked business. The tobacco companies should be funding our healthcare system through their illegal profits.

I do not want any harm for the Iranian people. The majority of them are just like us … they want to raise their children in peace and prosperity, but have little control over the actions of their KOOK government. JUST LIKE US.

Anyone who wants to bomb Iran or otherwise make war is sick in the head. Our national treasure and future for our children is being squandered by these war pigs.

McCain is constantly engaging his mouth before engaging his brain. This is a very dangerous thing to do. His careless words could provoke an international incident which could result in a war. He thinks it is funny but it isn't. He shows a lack of judgment over and over. He definitely isn't presidential. Now the Iranians think McCain is a warmonger who wants them to be destroyed and that will cause them to prepare even more for war. Presidents need to care about the people of all nations and not want to kill them off. The regime in Iran may be flawed, but there are many kind, innocent people in Iran who love the United States. Now McCain has damaged out relationship with these people. Stupid. No wonder his wife poked him in the back because of his comments. Obviously she is more qualified to be a President than he is.

Change = Obama

dee   July 13th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

No wonder why Iran officials are ready with their missiles.

When so-called US presidential has no respect whatsoever for people from other country- why will they not say "we are ready to pull the triggers"

Words Matter   July 13th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Ooooops I guess McCain forgot that words do Matter. We haven't gotten to the election yet and he's already started an internation problem, but I guess that's better than Boom Boom Boom Iran.

I guess it's easy to see what his foreign policy towards Iran will be. A 3rd war.

suzyku   July 13th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

mcsame/mcbush is a fool!

Susan   July 13th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

What he said is not "regretful", it is what this tired old warmonger really thinks. Watch out America, you put him in office and be ready for WWIII!

JforObama   July 13th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

There were very hatefuls comments towards Obama's response to Bernie Mac - when he stated "You need to clean up your act - just messing with you man". You know it is really silly to make a fuss over Bernie Mac when you have McCain joking about killing off people in IRAN.

I mean really people.

Unshrub   July 13th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

That's presidential? It sounds more like senility to me.

TRACY   July 13th, 2008 3:08 pm ET

Ha,ha,ha,ha! This is great!

I see - it's OK. for us to sell Iran cigarettes and other US-goodie and pretend we don't like them? It's OK that we shouldn't talk with them?

Go Bam! The US is such a back stabber!

Dew5050   July 13th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

CNN,

I know you won't publish this, but I don't care! You purposely failed to add that the iraqis said that the joke shows mcsame's war mongering nature. Furthermore, this news has been out there in the open for days and you refused to publish it. You changed your position and decided to publish it belatedly, only when you've seen that more media outlets are now carrying it. And to publish it in the manner you did, speaks volumes of your partisanship in favour of mcsame. As i'm seeing it, you guys are quite on track towards your fast race to the bottom! More grease to your elbow!

By the time you decide not to publish this, you must have read it and that's all i want!

Cynthia   July 13th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

The statement was inappropriate. We as Americans have to be worried about what else he won't say in the name of a joke that might not only offend Americans but foreign diplomats and people as well.

I am glad to see, McCain thinks its funny to kill all Iranians, innocent or not. Wow, what a competent president- jokes about killing people well Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran

TheTruthHurts   July 13th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

He was joking. I believe him. It's not a joke the president of the United States should make. Ever!!

There are millions of Muslims that are wondering whether Al Qaeda is right that Americans hate and want to kill Muslims. At the very least, such "jokes", are remarkably NOT HELPFUL.

As an economist, Phil Gramm is technically correct, we are not in a recession and leading consumer sentiment downward can help bring us in to an actual recession Nevertheless, the "government" statistics Phil is looking at are skewed (PPI, CPI), the fact that it is not yet as bad as the Depression is irrelevant to day-today living.

What's scary is I don't think McCain was thinking clearly when he said "bomb, bomb, bomb - bomb bomb Iran" or when he made this "joke." The problem is, "For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks" (Luke 6:45). That's the problem and the rest of the world knows it.

If McCain believes the people of Iran are evil or should be killed, he is feeding into the same sentiment held against the American people that extremists use to stir up violence in countries we either occupy or in which we meddle in their internal affairs.

john   July 13th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

President usually say that war is needed to remove abusive regimes like the one on Iran. Although I disagree with war, this is possible true.

However, mcBush does not talk about removing the iranian regime but to kill Iranians. Which includes innocent men, children and women.

Is this guy out of his ****** mind !!

This old man has thirst for blood. He just want to kill. This is sick

dr.noh   July 13th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

McCain =McPain !

Tim   July 13th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Maybe the Irans are whiners too!!! He is not only out of touch in this country, but with the world as well. Hey, here is a thought, maybe we are seffecing from mental terrorism as well as a mental recession!!!

McSame, what a shame!!!

ric   July 13th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

Typical republican. It reminds me when he hoped that Fidel Castro would join Karl Marx soon. They can be jokes but they say something about how he really feels about things. I wonder why republicans are so religious as what they do has nothing in common with the Catholic Church. This probably explains why more and more people are losing their faith.

no McCain!   July 13th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Anyone who says this does not deserve to be president!!!

Most Iranians are good people who are actually want to improve relations with the United States and Israel! Threatening them and telling "jokes" will only ruin our image and actually give them a reason to hate us! Like we need any more of that!

Iran's government isn't innocent, but its citizens sure are. I knew a dozen Iranians, and they were good people.

Obama '08

K Mansfield, NY, NY   July 13th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Can you imagine having to put up with 4 years of McCain's one-liners? This man wasn't as good as Bush in 2000, and we need someone a lot better than Bush in 2008.

President Obama sounds better and better every day.

Thomas, Illinois   July 13th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

McCain? Why don't you just tell the American people the truth? Quit spinning everything..We all know you will bomb Iran, no matter what happens…

Poll This!   July 13th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

"Maybe that's a way of killing them," sounds like a soulless monster, who has no conscience about killing thousands. McCain wouldn't shed a tear over bombing Iran either. Maybe more people will start to see that he just doesn't care about the all of the skulls he's walking on in his quest for power.

MODERATE   July 13th, 2008 2:33 pm ET

Wow, someone needs to put this guy on a leash. Nice foreign policy Johnny boy. Anyone remember what the draft was like???

The Surly Scholar   July 13th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Great. So in order to soften the rhetoric between nations that we have tense relations with, McCain jokes about using cigarettes to poison their citizens.

Clearly, John McCain has the upper hand when it comes to foreign policy.

Sally Jesse   July 13th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

John's a nice guy to invite over as part of the BBQ crowd at your house but that doesn't mean he's suitable as President of the United States.

He's not run a well managed campaign, look at all the shakes ups imposed by the RNC. If he can't run his campaign well, do we want him as the executive manager of the country ?

joe   July 13th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Dont know what is called diplomatic language, hot tempered, admits he knows nothing on economy, makes fun of other peoples predicament, cant communicate very well, crashed his plane behind enemy line….this guy cant be the president of any nation, talkless of the worlds greatest super power

BrittanyM   July 13th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

McCain's comments were in very poor taste. Is this his worldview? Even BUSH pretends to want peace in the Middle East, McCain apparently just wants to kill everyone!

Ms. Sims   July 13th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Yeah exactly what we need in the White House somebody already causing an international uproar before he's even elected! I guess they can start working on the new calendar "McCanisms" I'm sure they have enough material to at least get through the 2009 year.

LNJ , Houston   July 13th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

I'm glad they had the good sense not to endorse Barrack. That's all he need…to provide the Republicans more scare tactic material. The truth of the matter though, is that most people in the world embrace Barrack. not that some Americans value opinions of other peoples. Remember when the French blocked the UN from condoning the US invasion of Iraq. Remember how dsdainful so many Americans were of the French. Did they ever come up with a good substitute name for fries?

pe5632   July 13th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

i think senator McCain should learn how to talk and i dont see himm being a good president

Mr. McCain……ever heard of a guy named Jesse Jackson?

Cheryl   July 13th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

I can't imagine having someone with as little tact as John McCain as President. His sense of humor is just too inappropriate for the delicate job of dealing with other leaders and cultures around the world.

He reminds me of George Bush in this regard, you remember how Bush startled the German chancellor by coming up behind her and putting his hands on her neck, and how he shouts "Yo!" to get the attention of various presidents and prime ministers at G8 summits. The U.S. needs a president that will restore its much damaged reputation with the rest of the world, not further insult and alienate them.

Jack   July 13th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

LOL, Iran taking a page out of the Obama playbook!

McCain '08

Eric   July 13th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

Mccain has said it is not important when the troops are coming home. His main ecnomic adviser called Americans suffering under 8 years of Buch economics a bunch of whiners. And the guy makes jokes about killing people. How many more mistakes can Mccain do before the media, and the public in general, realize this guy is not suited to be president.

Big D   July 13th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

Thank you for finally covering this. I've been very frustrated at the media lately. It seems that every controversy (real or not) related to the Obama campaign is covered endlessly, no matter now remotely it's connected to Obama. But McCain himself and his inner circle can say horrible stuff and it's barely covered. The overall impression is that Obama's campaign is struggling, while McCain's campaign actually has had worse gaffes and missteps lately. Why the slanted coverage in which stories to post?

This is another example of how some of these politicians are out of touch with the people. Who would think this is funny? Killing people is not a joke. It's similiar to Huckabee joking about someone at the NRA pointing a gun at Obama. Who would think these jokes are funny? I'm not excusing Bernie Mac either. He should know better (but apparently he doesn't). At least Bernie isn't trying to be our president.

Beau   July 13th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

Walt   July 13th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

A joke? Nah, a representation of who this guy really is. It is one thing to abhor Iranian politics and government and quite another to wish lung cancer and heart disease on its citizens or even at best to find the concept amusing. Presidential? I don't think so.

Thankfully when traveling abroad over the last 8 years, foreigners generally treated my family and I very well—being able to separate the Bush Administration from feelings about individual U.S. citizens.

Michele Hussein, Oregon   July 13th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Interesting that the Iranians registered their upset with McCain's comments, but the American press has done little to call him on this. And further to this particular article, why has there been no press on McCain's Ten Funniest Ways to Kill Iranians? Even though veiled in jokster fashion, it is still pointed and hugely INAPPROPRIATE for an American who wants to be President of the U.S., especially considering the state of foreign relations/tensions today. So much could have been brought out from the McCain camp this week, but instead we have heard and heard about Jesse Jackson's comment.

Thank you for at least posting this one.

Fella from Chicago   July 13th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Agree with you John; send as many cancer "sticks" to Iran and let them literally choke on them. The political and religious hierarchy of course. Nothing against the common folk. George W. got rid of Saddam in Iraq, you get rid of the guy whose name takes nearly all the letters of the alphabet. Bill missed out on an oppurtunity to take out Bin Laden with a drone strike prior to 9/11, don't you miss the opportunity to take out this terrorist.

I don't think there will be peace in this world with McCain as President. I'm a republican, but I'm voting for Obama to help restore America's reputation as a decent nation that respects the life of everybody in this world.

Greg in Annapolis   July 13th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

McCain trying to tell a joke (a hideously crude and distasteful one) is like Bush being sincere and truthful; it doesn't really work. John McCain will be lucky if he is ever even invited to the White House by President Obama, much less convince the fed up people of this great country to actually vote him into office there. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it's time for the old guy to retire and enjoy his final years writing books and staying out of the sun. Maybe HE could start smoking again.

A Latte Lover, Seattle, WA   July 13th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

He always says it 'was a joke'. Well, if it actually was, it was time you stop 'joking' before you cause an international incident or start a war.

LT for Obama   July 13th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

This just shows that the world is watching everything that these candidates are doing and saying. Do you really want a president that makes insulting jokes about a country that we are at odds with?

McCain is not presidential material. He makes off color jokes and lies regularly as well as distorts Obama's stances on most issues. With McCain, we will not rebuild our foreign allies and our economy will continue to plummet. His economic policies and inconsistent and investigative reporting has shown that his 300 economists are not really all that supportive of him or his economic policies. The letter he refers to is misleading.

I think this is another example of what a nightmare McCain will be in dealing with other nations. Bush has diminished the respect other nations have of America, and I fear that McCain will make this even worse because he continues to make jokes about serious things. Example: Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran.

Whether because of his advancing age or lack of awareness, he is not what we need to navigate sensitive foreign relations.

McCain scares me on many levels. War is not a joke.

Misti Westbrook   July 13th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

Being a presidential candidate, McCain could've made a mature comment on that subject. I think it's a very low level of respect for human dignity when the comments are targetted to an entire nation. In political term, it equals to genocide.

Good for them. The disgraceful aspect of this is that it shows McCain's hatred of Iranians when the first thing he thinks of is a way of killing them, not resolving differences.

Which in itself is advocating killing the millions of smokers in this country.
