The New Yorker magazine says its latest cover is just satire.

(CNN) – Barack Obama's campaign has sharply criticized The New Yorker magazine over the publication's latest cover illustration that appears to portray the Illinois senator and his wife, Michelle, as terrorist enemies of the United States.

Specifically, the cover, published Sunday, shows Obama in the Oval Office dressed in traditional Muslim attire and Michelle with an "Afro" hairstyle carrying a machine gun. An American flag can also be seen burning in the fire place and a picture of Osama bin Laden hangs on the wall.

Watch: Journalists debate the New Yorker Cover

"The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create," Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement.

"But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree."

John McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds said he agreed with Burton's sentiment.

iReport.com: Satire or slander? Share your thoughts

Obama himself refused to comment on the illustration Sunday.

SHAME ON THE NEW YORKER! AND SHAME ON THE NEW YORK TIMES…….. THEY HAVE LOST OUR SUPPORT!!!

All you have to do is read the comments by "JohnBoy" and "Obamaoverload" to see how prejudice people are! Sen. Obama is having to defend his patriotism and his citizenship……. and the New Yorker gives ammunition to the hate-and-fear mongers! Shame!

A Jewish candidate would not be treated like this! A gay man would not be treated like this……. why is it okay to portrait an African American like this???????

I am disgusted! I have often suspected that the "powers-that-be" do not want an Obama presidency.

Also, OBAMA WOULD BE FURTHER UP IN THE POLLS, BUT…… ITS THE KIND OF FEAR-AND-HATE- MONGERING THE LIKES OF THE NEW YORKER THAT KEEPS PEOPLE FROM ……. SEEING……. A GOOD MAN!

NEW YORK TIMES……. YOU ARE OUT OF OUR HOME!

B   July 14th, 2008 10:10 am ET

I actually buy the New Yorkers explanation. I think they should have toned it down just a little. Outraged? Not me, but I am a little disappointed. I still plan to read the article.

Give me a break   July 14th, 2008 10:10 am ET

Reading is fundamental. Obama is always getting heat from americans who do not read or are not exposed to people outside the hicks and are scared of a black president. McShame and Cindy do not get any of this type of offensive media. WHY? Historically, there is NO Reason for the fear for a black person in the oval office. Blacks do not have a history of scarying, lynching, killing, etc americans only being legally victimized by america.

Also Johnboy- Obama has not spent 1/2 of his life outside of the USA. READ READ READ. Do not read just one article. Read many to compare. FYI -Hawaii is a state of the US.

HC   July 14th, 2008 10:10 am ET

Burning the american flag in the oval office? Come on, isn't here anything alse they could be inspired by? Only the mere idea of it is not acceptable. They don't know that it's against the law to do that? Now there even picturing it on their cover as a "satire/joke"? The New Yorker should be prosecuted for offending the USA and its citizens & instigating terrorism.

Billion   July 14th, 2008 10:10 am ET

they'll do whatever they can to bring him down .. right wing idiots have to bring out fear rather then change and hope to this country .. and under McLame fear will always be instilled. We NEED change and hope in this country .. in the worst economic state, the world is hating .. McFool will just keep things the way they are.

Obama is the man, we need him to get things done .. improve quality of life.

Obama 08. no doubt!

Kim, Dallas, TX   July 14th, 2008 10:10 am ET

Wow, some people will stop at nothing. This is really very tasteless, just like the comment that cigarettes could kill the Iranians. I am really very unimpressed with right wing tactics. I'm not saying Obama is perfect, but swaying public opinion and justifying hate is really low for any publication. I am beyond amazed.

Rudy NYC   July 14th, 2008 10:10 am ET

imbecilliantic - 1. n, the nonsensical actions of an imbecile.; pl. imbecilliantics.

James Buchanan   July 14th, 2008 10:10 am ET

Not quite the comedic quality of Jerry Falwell sleeping with his mother that sent Larry Flynt to the Supreme Court, but its in the ballpark.

Sorry to the whiners, but the press does have the right to offend you.

Pat D   July 14th, 2008 10:09 am ET

I don't agree with the cover, but Vi and Obama overload have it right.
Hillary keep the Americans in your politics………………………………………

LET IT GO   July 14th, 2008 10:09 am ET

This is just racist, They could had wrote the article without the picture. And why does Michelle Obama have a afro the last time I check her hair is straight.

Some Thoughts   July 14th, 2008 10:09 am ET

Hmm… Well, it's one way to increase readership, at least temporarily. I am slightly surprised however that there wasn't a caption of some sort to show that it was intended to be satirical about a rather idiotic view that some people cooked up to instill general hatred of a candidate instead of using persuasive and logical argument to sway people in their favor.

Nobody Asked Larry But...   July 14th, 2008 10:09 am ET

Shame on Saturday Night Live - the New Yorker Magazine beat you to it. Actually, I think it is quite good, hilarious, and will, to the regret to the right wing nuts, bring some sympathy and additional support for Barack Obama. The New Yorker reaches a clientele that is, at the very least, above average, and will see through it as a mis-fire on the rights' part and nothing more than satire.

Ohio girl   July 14th, 2008 10:09 am ET

Tacky, tacky tacky. Are they going to do the next cover with the McCains in the oval office with John sitting in a rocking chair and Cindy McCain covered in jewels and chugging a beer?

Obamabot   July 14th, 2008 10:09 am ET

Quote: "Obama spent 1/2 his life outside the USA, he is not a complete American."
And where did you get that piece of information , my friend? Last I heard, he grew up in Hawaii, and Hawaii was a part of the USA.

McCain was born in Panama. What does that make him?

FEDUP   July 14th, 2008 10:09 am ET

Never bought the New Yorker before, when does it go on sell!!!!

JomoDaMusicMan   July 14th, 2008 10:09 am ET

I NOT ONLY FIND THE NEW YORKER'S COVER ON OBAMA AS TASTELESS BUT OVERTLY RACIST. IT SHOWS THE MAGAZINE IS A SUPPORTER OF JOHN MCCAIN AND IS ATTEMPTING TO HELP McCAIN STEAL THE ELECTION. THIS IS EXACTLY THE SAME TACTIC THAT JESSE HELMS USED IN CAROLINA . THIS IS AN OLD SOUTHERN PLOY THAT WAS USED IN THE OLD SOUTH TO RALLY WHITES AGAINST BLACKS SEEKING JUSTICE

ddaryl   July 14th, 2008 10:09 am ET

America continues to sink to new lows…

but lets face it… the right wing neo-cons will always sink to whatever lows they have to to preserve themselves.

lakeside   July 14th, 2008 10:09 am ET

I'm sure this article is a reflection of just how much we DON'T KNOW about the Senator. I am not of the opinion that the photo is right or wrong, we just DON'T KNOW.

Bruce   July 14th, 2008 10:09 am ET

Screw Obama's people if they can't take a joke. Pretty sad state of affairs when they have to even comment on something that was satire in nature.

YEAH IT MAY OFFENSIVE AND TASTLESS, BUT IT'S THE TRUTH.

OBAMA 08

John, Long Island, NY   July 14th, 2008 10:08 am ET

Satire or otherwise, it is offensive. Unfortunately it reflects the ignorance of people like JohnBoy and other McSame supporters.

John E Lexington KY   July 14th, 2008 10:08 am ET

It's not the most brilliant NYer cover ever, but get a sense of humor. More disturbing to me is this pattern of Obama's staff slamming someone - the Clintons, the New Yorker, anyone in their way - and he's cooly above it. Actually that means he's seething about it. You want to be the most powerful man in the world you need thick skin whatever shade it is. Grow up. The proper response is to laugh at it and a dismissive joke. It could be a long four years.

K   July 14th, 2008 10:08 am ET

The cover is just a reflection and the perception of new yorker's in general……."Tasteless and Offensive." and in poor taste.

Ryuken   July 14th, 2008 10:07 am ET

I loved the cover - it was funny to me, but then again I've decided to support one of the 3rd party candidates or even SENATOR MCCAIN if Obama does't pick SENATOR CLINTON!

smile!!!!   July 14th, 2008 10:07 am ET

once again, the ignorant and simple minds of the repugnants comes to light……they only have a fraud of a candidate who cannot even think for himself…..no brains.

Dan, Mpls, MN   July 14th, 2008 10:07 am ET

Anyone who tries to defend this tactic is simply out of town with reality. America has become a Natio of Idiots.

Emma   July 14th, 2008 10:07 am ET

The New Yorker's cover page is outlandish, insensitive, wreckless, undermining, demeaning and nasty journalism, excuse me, this is not journalism.

I have not been a subscriber to The New Yorker and this has certainly caused me to never buy the magazine.

It is offensive to Black Americans everywhere who try to rise above such caricatures of sterotypical African Americans. It is not funny and I find no humor!

Tennessee Mike   July 14th, 2008 10:07 am ET

Mr. and Mrs. Obama:

POTUS is the most powerful job in the world. If you and your family do not have the intestinal fortitude (i.e. guts, mental toughness, "thick hide", etc.) to handle this kind of satire - tell me how in the hell do we expect you to make the crucial decisions demanded of POTUS?

Bottom line is: We can't.

Obama is not qualified, capable, or tough enough to do the job - this will be the 2nd admin of Jimmy Carter if Obama wins - as I recall, Carter is a Lover of the Muslims / Palestinians / Terrorsits as well.

Karwolo   July 14th, 2008 10:07 am ET

wow, the politics in this country never ceases to amaze me! for goodness sake, can't we stick to the issues?

Alan Boyer   July 14th, 2008 10:06 am ET

I hope the New Yorker does a cover with John McCain in bed with Cindy while his first wife is in a hospital bed recovering for a horrific auto accident. The difference is that the McCain illustration would depict undisputed facts.

Evadney   July 14th, 2008 10:06 am ET

This COVER is beyond tasteless!! This is 2008.

Jean   July 14th, 2008 10:06 am ET

Well I think it is a crying shame someone would run down anyone in this fashion.

KStone   July 14th, 2008 10:06 am ET

I find the New Yorker offensive and tasteless too. But more importantly, it serves to perpetuate the insidious notion that Sen. Obama has a hidden un-American agenda. That he is a closet Muslim! What if he is? Being a Muslim and a patriotic American are not mutually exclusive.

Scott, Wichita   July 14th, 2008 10:06 am ET

That's hilarious!

Terry from VA   July 14th, 2008 10:06 am ET

When they run a cover showing McCain collaborating with his Viet Cong captors, boozing with women in Jacksonville, FL, adultery after Carol McCain's car accident and before their divorce, his questionable conduct as a member of a group that was the center of the largest savings and loan fraud and collapse in the United States, then, I will believe the cover on Senator and Mrs. Obama is just satire.

would be funny except   July 14th, 2008 10:06 am ET

There are too many uneducated people in this country who are still not aware that Barack Obama is a Christian. This would be funny except for people's ignorance. Many people still believe the Republican spread rumor that Barack Obama is a Muslim.

Chris, Middletown, CT   July 14th, 2008 10:06 am ET

While wrapping yourself in "freedom of the press" - I guess you can say anything you want - maybe for the next cover you could show McCain tossing Jews into an oven…oh that sattire would be so funny (not) -

Keke   July 14th, 2008 10:05 am ET

I think the New Yorker magazine cover is racist and tasteless. Can we say perception is reality here?

Jane   July 14th, 2008 10:05 am ET

This was an extremely LAME attempt at satire. Of course, savvy New Yorker readers are going to "get it." But I'm worried about the other 90%: the rest of our sound-bite addicted country: those who had misconceptions about Obama's religious extremism and lack of patriotism in the first place. Months were spent dispelling rumors about Obama's "Muslim" heritage and his middle name. And this just re-opens the wound. The New Yorker evidently doesn't regard the polls that indicate the scary percentage of people who still believe that Obama is a secret Muslim extremist.

Doesn't the New Yorker realize that just by showing this cover over and over again on FOX News, that the lies about the Obamas continue and fester? Sean Hannity's week has just been made………..

I love political cartoons, but this one was over the top, and in extremely bad taste………

SHAME ON THE NEW YORKER.

The article may be good, but how many people will read the article, versus those who will just look at the cover? Tasteless, INDEED!!

Jon-Patrick   July 14th, 2008 10:05 am ET

"Obama spent 1/2 his life outside the USA, he is not a complete American."

If that un-makes an American, you have a lot to explain to the thousands of US service men, women and their children who live oversees in our foreign installations.

Multinational American   July 14th, 2008 10:05 am ET

Not living in America all of your life is not a qualification to be a "complete America". I personally lived outside of America for more than 1/2 of my early life as the dependent of a miliitary father.
It is statememts like the one made by "JohnBoy" that show the depth of ignorance and racsim which prevades in America today.

On the other had I agree that the seal showing Obama with the reference to the Office of the President was over the top also.

We as Americans have the right of free speech which is guaranteed by the Constitution, but we should always posess the intellegence to use that right for positive and not negative discourse. The cover done by the New Yorker, while it may be politacal satire, is in very poor taste. While the editors and staff may think this type of cover is funny, the fact of the matter is it will only serve to reinforce the falsehood of Mr. Obama 1) being a Muslim, and 2) his presidency being an aid to the Radical Islamic cause.

Lastly, it is my opinion that the New Yorker cover is an insult to all practicing Muslims in America, the majority of whom "DO NOT" align themselves with the Radical Islamic cause.

Xavier, Saint Louis, MO   July 14th, 2008 10:05 am ET

I don't find the cover to serve any purpose other than to increase the sales of the publication. Whatever The New Yorker might indicate, we should all reserve the freedom of speech. I do hope Senators Obama and McCain both agree on this one.

At least, it is made in the USA.

'tasteless and offensive' that is so TRUE Obama camp…….Just another try at fooling and freighting the American people to vote for McSame. Who ever thought this was OK, needs to seek professional help ASAP. I guess McCain and his wife pictured will be next month feature on the cover, I hope they make sure when they are just satire/joking the people responsible for this one make sure they include Mrs. McCain running behind prescription pills that are flying in the mid air, several botox needles in her hands and McSame counting the money out of beer cans that his wife company saved after 100’s lose their jobs.

SOMEONE AT THE NEW YORK TIMES, SHOULD BE BROUGHT UP ON CHARGES FOR HAVING A PITCURE THAT SHOW BURING OUR FLAG, such desperation, bad and immoral acts that is just satire. If this is the way they show their love of our County, by burning our flag,
This is what OUR CHILDREN should think this is the way to show Patriotism from The New York TIme.

Reality for a change   July 14th, 2008 10:04 am ET

It may intended to be satirical lampoon, but it comes in the midst of the Obama campaign trying to clarify much of the slander and lies created by the right to muddy up whats truth and what are lies.

It’s obvious what their intensions are, and it IS in bad taste. Not for the "buzz" they’re trying to create, but more so for the confusion that many will actually buy into. I for one (and I’m sure there will be many others ) will no longer buy or read the new yorker.

Michael   July 14th, 2008 10:04 am ET

"Obama spent 1/2 his life outside the USA, he is not a complete American."

So do I and I work for the US goverment. Does this make me an incomplete American? You sir are a moron and if that is the best your right wingers have this election should be a slam dunk for Obama.

Moderate Republican Supporting Obama   July 14th, 2008 10:04 am ET

This cover is utterly foolish and whatever "good intentions" were meant by the New Yorker, I think the point will be completely lost on those who are just drooling for a reason to substantiate their irrational prejudice against Obama.

HopeMonger in NYC   July 14th, 2008 10:03 am ET

I believe in free speech and I also believe in speaking through my pocketbook. This is one New Yorker that will no longer be subscirbing to the New Yorker. Unfortunately, with so much ignorance out there, I believe the "satire" will be lost on many. I believe to perpetuate and play into these fears increases the dangers for me as a New Yorker and as an American. I find it to be in extremely bad taste.

Ted   July 14th, 2008 10:03 am ET

The reason that this is so offensive is that a lot of people will see this as truth, not satire. While liberals may see this as lampooning of the right, the opportunists and bigots on the right will use this as proof that they've been correct about Obama all along. The cover enforces the malicious rumors. This will be a poster in every GOP field office until November.

This cover is actually funny to me. For those you don't yet know, whatever God has for Obama and his family, no one will be able to take away. You can slander his name, make fun of his family, try scare tactics, say he is "exotic" (code word for black) And at the end of the day all of those things won't matter if God's plan is for him to be president.

Good luck trying!

Obama '08

floridian   July 14th, 2008 10:02 am ET

Unfortunately, there are some Americans that believe what the cover reflects. So, instead of Sen. Obama commenting directly to the cover and NOT further upsetting that group you have the other guy, Sen. McCain, who would presumably get that group's votes, commenting and "turning off" that group. What a weird campaign this is and what each of the candidate's are doing is full of surprises. Why don't we just stop being sensitive to the trash that will continue and just let the chips fall and ignore them. Why do the candidates have to comment all the time about such things? They have limited time and need to be doing other things.

Unfortunately, this cover will do exactly what it was intended to do.
With rampant lies and misinformation being emailed and printed in these blogs, it is apparent that most people do not read past the headlines and believe what they see. This is a blatant attack on Barrack Obama by this rag of a mag. For CNN to even print it will bring out the haters and racists and add fuel to the many ignorant people who will believe anything negative on him. Why? Because they want to believe it. Shame on you New Yorker and CNN. How much did the Rep party pay you for this? They and you are filth.

Hillbilly for Barack   July 14th, 2008 10:01 am ET

If it weren't for the fact that the majority of Americans are mindless and ignorant, this might be an appropriate satire of the right wing kooks who paint this false image of Obama. However, the New Yorker's decision to use this image will only confuse the fools who already believe this to be true because they read it on the internet in one of the many false and defamatory emails circulating about Obama. I get it, but most people won't … then again, most of them will have never heard of the New Yorker until Fox News brings them this headline in ther usual slanderous and misleading way.

Barack is not the answer, but he is a step in the right direction.

I tried to contact the New Worker directly and the web site is disabled and the phone just rings. They make a HUGE mistake. This is criminal. It is wrong and the editor should be fired for poor judgement. Nobody thinks it is satire or humorous. It is about as bad as it gets. The credibility of the New Yorker just dropped-permanently.

Karmo   July 14th, 2008 10:00 am ET

Obama needs to toughen his skin, like everybody else does when they choose, in accordance with the rights afforded all Americans, to put themselves in the public eye — and therefore, out there for public scrutiny and commentary. We are the land of the free and that includes many rights, including journalistic latitude (The New Yorker) and even the right to disagree.

If Hillary Clinton had screamed and kicked each time she was the (not always positive) subject of a political cartoon, cover, joke, or comment, she would have been accused of wimpy feminine behavior unbecoming to a presidential candidate.

If the Obamas can't stand the heat, they need to get out of the kitchen.

Belle   July 14th, 2008 10:00 am ET

I also thought Obama's comments about baseless charges of flip flopping to be extremely funny….one only has to listen to his speech, the check his voting record to see he is indeed a flip flopper, all wrapped up in "flexibility."

LOL. Too funny. I thought the article was excellent and I thougth the cover was funny. Maybe for the Obama's the cartoon hit a little too close to home? What have you to hide? It's a satire. Chill and laugh. Making a big stink about it give it credibility.

Bobby, Triangle, VA   July 14th, 2008 9:59 am ET

The New Yorker Magazine is a disgrace to all americans and should be ashame, however you can tell who they want to be president. They need to realize the only people who this will have an effect on are the people who are not voting for Obama anyway!

They should be ashamed of this cover! This is pure slander, no way related to satire at all! What does this say about the respect for the office that he is running for? This is shameful and a poor representation of unity of our country. This is an outrage and is disgusting!

ET from OMAHA   July 14th, 2008 9:59 am ET

They can draw OBAMA kissing Bin Laden i will still vote for him over McWar who will undeniably start WW3.
Why don't they draw OBAMA in AL-Qeada camp training or shouting bush with Bin laden? Bunch of stupid journalists.
They can only fool some stupid ignorant that only watch TV or vote on gossips and smears not me.

hal   July 14th, 2008 9:59 am ET

I think the cover is rather funny. Lighten up- this is just the beginning!

Ted   July 14th, 2008 9:58 am ET

That is disgusting. All the fake Democratic Hillary crowd will come in cheering in 5…4…3…2…

Evadney   July 14th, 2008 9:58 am ET

This article is beyond tasteless! It is time white America acknowledges just how racist it continues to be. This is 2008!
Wake up!

joeD   July 14th, 2008 9:58 am ET

The New Yorker may think they are poking fun and being satirical, but there are about %28 of the people in the country who will actually say that cover is what they actually believe will happen when Obama is elected. A bit of a backfire, egging on those %28 percent I think. Even after the Rev Wright nonsense, the midwest still think obama is muslim. All practical sense has fled this country.

sammie wright   July 14th, 2008 9:58 am ET

Wow. What we have to endure as a people. It's not enough to follow me in the shopping malls, or be the last to get served in a restaurant, be stopped be plain clothes officers with guns walking with my laundry from the laundry mat at 12 in the afternoon or going for an interview for employment. It all adds up, day after day, year after year. I'm am simply hurt. I cannot understand how we as a nation cannot lead the way on all fronts not just in Iraq. Now who all raised their hands and said, "Yeah this is the cover we want to stand behind and represent! Let's go with this!"

Rob   July 14th, 2008 9:58 am ET

Of course Obama is criticizing this. When it affects him, it matters, and it is wrong. When it affects others (i.e. Clinton, McCain), it's ok. How can Americans be so naive, and vote for a man who says "lay off my wife." Everyone is fair game, especially spouses who help raise millions of dollars.

I'm not sure if Obama and his people understand the meaning of the word "satire."

I guess Freedom of Speech is going to be one of the first things to go when Obama and company get into power.

Jackie - NYC   July 14th, 2008 9:58 am ET

I understand what the New Yorker is trying to do here but I am afraid a large part of the population won't see it. They won't read the article and the cover will just confirm what they already believe. I am once shocked and the close-mindeness of America!!

To JohnBoy - that fact that Obama spend half of his life outside of the United States doesn't make him any less American than John McCain who wasn't even born in the United States, he was born on a military base in Panama. Get over yourself!!

Shawn   July 14th, 2008 9:57 am ET

This is pathetic for the New Yorker. Just how low can you get with these types of publicity. They must have consulted Carl Rove for this cover page.

Just admit it   July 14th, 2008 9:57 am ET

Hidden Racism - I have noticed a lot in the news the way people are very racist and sexist in there remarks. They don't want a women for president, they don't want a black man for president. They would rather have another OLD Bush raising Cain in the office. When will the rest of America wake up and welcome CHANGE!!! YES CHANGE!!!
I wish we can create another reality show. "AM I RACIST OR SEXIST"
where we can question a lot of the news castors while they are connected to a polygraph "lie detector machine" and just flat out ask them these questions. I wonder who would volunteer to take the test.
Questions: Do you think you are racist?

Judge Judy   July 14th, 2008 9:57 am ET

AHA !!
It took a New Yorker to lay the facts bare.
The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

And another truth: This comment will never make it out of "moderation", or "sensorship" would be a better word.

b/augusta   July 14th, 2008 9:57 am ET

I see what is happening here. Everyone, just remember swift boat.
The cover is poisonous and an effort to portray Barack and Michelle as anti American. The Obama campaign should sue and request an injunction against the cover. It is highly offensive.

LMAO   July 14th, 2008 9:57 am ET

Love him or hate him, this cover is shameful. I still get baffled at how "ugly" people can be toward each other. The level of disdain for Obama is unbelievable to me and for what? Because he speaks of change? Because he can relate to a lot of people? Because he gets support from people from all walks of life? We did the same thing to Abraham Lincoln, JFK and MLK. Why? You don't have to like Obama, but why tear him down like that? It's embarrasing. We have the freedom of speech and the right to vote as handed down to us from our forefathers. But we also have a duty of care to our children and future generations to pratice what we preach: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" and "If you can't say something good about someone, don't say anything."

For what it's worth, I am an Obama supporter for more reasons than I care to state and I certainly have not condoned all of his actions during this campaign. I also believe his supporters can be harsh towards McCain as they were with Clinton. With that said, I'm an educated adult quite capable of making my own decision about who I'm going to vote for regardless of what gets said about Obama. I can only hope others are strong enough to stand for what they believe (whether that be for or against Obama)…let's just be civil about it.

jason   July 14th, 2008 9:57 am ET

it's supposed to be tasteless and offensive - being tasteless and offensive helps people realize how foolish the accusations are. That's why it's in a satire magazine.

you've no reason to be offended by a satire magazine, unless it is saying something accurate.

Tom, WV   July 14th, 2008 9:56 am ET

The fact of the matter is that there are still Americans out there who think Obama is Mulsim or who consider Obama not even an American (like the post of JohnBoy).

I think the fear is that this will breed even more ignorance, which is a powerful political tool.

Nick, NY   July 14th, 2008 9:56 am ET

This is really insulting. I mean I know this isn't the NY Times, but really. The comparison of Obama to whatever that pic is supposed to be…a radical Muslim (as opposed to mainstream, peace loving Muslims) or a terrorist- and that of his wife to a terrorist is just below the belt. Who in their right mind would make such a comparison of ANY other Presidential candidate? Two terrorists? Or, a terrorist and a radical Muslim? Come on, guys.

kula   July 14th, 2008 9:56 am ET

This is insane. Why would people do this to the Obama's?

Dems 4 McCain   July 14th, 2008 9:56 am ET

It's a little extreme for a bit of satire and could have done with a caption but if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. Hillary had to endure it much to your satisfaction so now you're getting the same treatment.

Martin   July 14th, 2008 9:56 am ET

Matt, Manchester, CT   July 14th, 2008 9:56 am ET

B.F.D. - If the New Yorker had made a similar cover about John McCain, no one would even remotely raise an eyebrow. The magazine would lauded for "pushing the envelope." Democrats are the worst hypocrites when they can give, give, give, but can never take.

RR FL   July 14th, 2008 9:56 am ET

This cover is scary because, it is probably nearer to the
truth then any of us want to admit.

Larry Kincaid   July 14th, 2008 9:55 am ET

Totally disgraceful. Lampooning? Or spreading the fear and ignorance? How low can you go? This rag is calling our next president an Osama loving terrorist. Seriously folks.

dave   July 14th, 2008 9:55 am ET

the new yorker should have made it more plain that it was lampooning the ridiculous portraits of Obama. there are far too many simple minded Americans who cannot draw the distinction.

PhilG   July 14th, 2008 9:55 am ET

The cover say's it all

energy   July 14th, 2008 9:55 am ET

Senator Obama is causing all this nonsense to create undue sympathy. His name is Hussein, yet he is offended when he is called so–and that is even after Jeremiah Wright has lectured him that Arabic name has not always mean a Muslim name. I know many Christians answering Arabic names. Last year, I ran into a Catholic Reverend stationed in the US that answers–I think Mohammed or Abubakar. Obama creates all the suspicion and must demonstrate the transparency he claims to champion. I am for an Obama that is proud of his background and heritage and not a fake opportunist running for president. Still, he is better than the Republican fill-in called JM

Bob (Maryland)   July 14th, 2008 9:55 am ET

Of course, the sophisticated readers of New Yorker will understand the satirical intent. But those 10 percent of people who fall for the false rumor that Obama is a Muslim will just think "Aha! That proves what I've been saying all along!"

The New Yorker editors were irresponsible.

mark trainor   July 14th, 2008 9:55 am ET

Jeremy D   July 14th, 2008 9:54 am ET

That's quite insulting of a Presidential nominee. It's about respect. Barack has shown a ton of respect for John McCain but the right doesn't show respect for Senator Obama who has given years and years of his life for public service.

marygrace   July 14th, 2008 9:54 am ET

The cover is tasteless but those who are going to believe such things are true are going to anyway, no matter who tells them differently.

Port Orange FL

Eric   July 14th, 2008 9:54 am ET

It would be a valid satire if they bothered to write an article about it or mention it in the magazine. They could also have added a picture of a frazzled John McCain with a walker yelling at kids from his porch.

Kate   July 14th, 2008 9:54 am ET

I'd be interested to see a similar cover for the McCains… any ideas about what it would look like?

Bill Vallier   July 14th, 2008 9:53 am ET

I think the cover is way over the edge…

I can't ever remember seeing one of George Bush dressed as an Arab and his wife wearing a veil, with a picture of the King of Saudia Arabia on the wall with the US Constitution burning in the fireplace.

Naomi, Texas   July 14th, 2008 9:53 am ET

This picture is simply offensive and wrong

Matt, Minneapolis, MN   July 14th, 2008 9:53 am ET

Go figure, Tim(an obvious obama supporter) takes a shot at McCain's wife, when the McCain campaign supports obama on denouncing this cover. what the heck is going on that people feel the need to criticise him even when he makes a move in solidarity with your canidate. Grow a pair and say thank you Mr. and Mrs. McCain for supporting our canidate. McCain has basically said that spouses are off limits, so has Obama. Just because she's been a sucessful business woman you don't have to be bitter. Oh wait only people who are religious or own guns are bitter.

America will never progress with these kinds of hatred. Satire? No one will believe it is a satire. New Yorker magazine should apologize to the Obama family, or even better idea for the Obama campaign to launch a lawsuit againt the maagize. That should teach them a lesson. .

uuuugh!!   July 14th, 2008 9:51 am ET

you know what, as an African American this is just one more example of how white America just does not get it.

Elaine Yanow   July 14th, 2008 9:51 am ET

I agree. I sent a letter to the New Yorker pointing out two cartoons that I felt were anti-semitic and stereotypical and I have never heard back from them. I think the New Yorker feels they are above criticism, but this cover may actually get them to look more closely at their smugness.

Randy,PA   July 14th, 2008 9:51 am ET

Pitiful, tasteless, most of America will probably never read the article and will only except the cover art as a reality statement. Perhaps it's better that the cover is on The New Yorker and not Mad magazine after all.

Harvey   July 14th, 2008 9:51 am ET

I think one of the definitions of humor is that it makes people laugh, and certainly some people will laugh at this thinly disguised attack. Some people laugh when a person sets a cat on fire or pulls the wings off of a butterfly, however I don't think must people consider that particularly funny. I think there is a parallel here. Just because the people at The New Yorker label this cover as satire and think it is funny does not make it so. The question becomes if these individuals are smart enough to see the humor in their satire are we to believe that they did not see the harm in it as well?

Mark   July 14th, 2008 9:51 am ET

Obama overload - The presidential seal was not used, it was changed to fit the needs of the campaign…IE different seal…

secondly it does not compare to this cover, not even close…

We do not want un-patriotic people representing us nor running this country. America is everything the obama's are not.
He would be more comfortable in Chicago, not the white house

Denise, Katy, TX   July 14th, 2008 9:50 am ET

Connie   July 14th, 2008 9:49 am ET

I myself find this cover very unpatriotic .As an Obama supporter I would not even like to see this about McBush either. I don't think this is satire, only a black eye on the New Yorker. I believe Obama does not need to comment on this he has bigger things to worry about economy, war and the nations banks going down the drain. Everyone in America should be commenting on it though, we had nine soldiers die over this weekend, we had fifteen injured. We have lost over four thousand , with thousands disabled and they show an American flag being burnt in a fireplace. Well, if it's not fear mongering, but just to highlight the ignorance out there, why don't they next have a satire of a pediphile in an act with a 10 yr old and say we just wanted to create a discussion!

Foolish racists who think this satire will help me with $5/gal gas and my mental recession!

Vi Florida   July 14th, 2008 9:49 am ET

This doesn't highlight the crap out there - it plays into it. Too many believe that Obama is a Muslim terrorist (witness all the emails being forwarded) and New Yorker put this is all that will be remembered. I am appalled and ashamed. If anybody believes that Obama (born in US) is not an American they should look at McCain who wasn't born in US. Obama spent most of his life in the US - Hawaii from age of 9-10 and then mainland - what is this 1/2 his life spent outside the US. I hate lies and lack of integrity - which is what the New Yorker has done.
Obama was not my choice - Hillary was but I will support Obama now that he will be the nominee.
Best,
Vi

Clare   July 14th, 2008 9:49 am ET

Hoorah for The New Yorker! It has done in one drawing what none of the rest of the media has the courage to do, i.e., show Obama and his wife for what they really are - a threat to this nation.

5two   July 14th, 2008 9:49 am ET

How sleazy and inappropriate. This isn't satire, this is racist and offensive.

Sam   July 14th, 2008 9:48 am ET

Wow, it took all of two seconds for some Hillary whiner to spout about what she endured. Yours was clearly the most put-upon candidate in the history of politics. Perhaps they should have gotten a pillow for her.

I'd love for one of these Hillary apologists to point to one example — JUST ONE — of when she got treatment even slightly resembling sexism from Obama's campaign. That has been the implication for months now, though no Hillary supporter has been able to provide any evidence that anything of that nature ever came from Obama or his surrogates.

Maybe the media, maybe Republicans, maybe people who just don't like her … but never from Obama.

Scott A.   July 14th, 2008 9:48 am ET

Lighten up! It's a very funny cover. The New Yorker has broken the mainstream media's political correctness rule not to say anything that even appears critical of Obama. Now the rule is broken and the campaign can begin!

Joe   July 14th, 2008 9:48 am ET

As a long time reader of the New Yorker, I can tell you, they certainly would not and are not endorsing anything conservative. But, like true New Yorkers they are sarcastic. I love it.

Pennsylvania   July 14th, 2008 9:48 am ET

If it's just satire… then let the next issue of The New Yorker be a satirical view of Sen. John McCain and his wife Cindy in all their aged, pill popping and war mongoring glory.

Personally, I find that what The New Yorker has done with their cover of Obama will only solidify and add creedence to the fears that uninformed people have. It's not funny… it's offensive and misleading. Most people won't get past the cover to read the article and pictures are worth a thousand words — only these words would not be worth repeating.

I won't buy the magazine just in protest of their ignorance.

VI, what do you mean a taste of what Hillary endured? Hillary was never subjected to racism. Matter of fact, it was someone in her camp that initially sent out the email of Obama in the Kenyan outfit so what did Hillary endure. She is not the nominee please remember that.

Sharon   July 14th, 2008 9:47 am ET

This is nothing compared to what Hillary endured during the primary season. Now we are finding out the real Obama which is different from the primary race.

Hollywoodaholic   July 14th, 2008 9:47 am ET

Yeah, but how many people who see the image are going to read the story? The picture gets slapped around the news cycle without any context. Fox News will run it as a documented photo. Don't tell me The New Yorker thought satire would play to the ignorant. It was a calculated hit because Obama doesn't want to bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran.

Kim   July 14th, 2008 9:47 am ET

The New yorker knows what they are doing. They know that some of the American people will believe anything they read and see. That was very tasteless.

i think its offensive, but the media will put more fire to it by paying more attention to the magazine, than what the candidates are talking about that will be the media's main news i just dont get it, instead of iraq, gas prises, our economy but no they will all pay attention to the magazine, shame on the media, they always look for the wrong news istead of reporting real news they like this gotcha news, they have to shows us that they are not going to focus on such news, and talk about the war in iraq, gas, our economy, other journalist in the world are watching at the us media and loughing at how our news media reports about disrespectful things weather its president bush or obama or clinton, its a shame

Hillary Clinton had it good because she is a women. If I was Barack during the primary I would have hit her harder than he did. You women Lib people are crazy. You want the same treatment as men but when it does not go your way you cry or you claim sexism. If you want to go after someone go after her husband and other sex freaks.

Senator Clinton was good in the primaries but you must blame her campaign people not Senator Obama!!!

No wonder the print media continues it's downward slide and loss of importance to most Americans {and thus can't get the necessary advertising dollars to sustain}. Instead of concentrating on real journalistic reporting and focusing on the issues that really impact Americans, print media like this magazine run stupid cartoons designed to ignite the dumbest of Americans! Adios, New Yorker, see you in the tabloid section of local grocery store!

Aw, Tim. You have fallen upon the thorns of life and you bleed. Bad Shelley; bad self pity.

McCain is such a pansy! He is going to lose this election because he has no sense of humor, not balls fo the fight. I am suprised that anyone in the mainstream media would have dared run this cover. Cudos New Yorker!!!

Not an Obama supporter, but my first thought was this was pretty tasteless. However, expect no sympathy here as Obama is getting tastes now of what Hillary had to unfairly endure throughout her campaign.

HRC in 2012!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Michael   July 14th, 2008 9:45 am ET

I think it is great it reflects my feelings of him,

Zelda of Pittsburgh   July 14th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Why doesn't Obama stop giving in to political fears, embrace the satire and CHANGE the converation? He's become so afraid of being labeled a Muslim that he avoids mosques, his campaign aides have told Muslim women they can't sit in certain areas during his rallies. It's ridiculous. When fear dictates your actions (unless you're in physical danger), it's rarely good. I'm an Obama supporter, but he really needs to get a new perspective and a back bone. Embrace the satire and take this opportunity to change the conversation.

CarlosN   July 14th, 2008 9:45 am ET

This is a new low for a publication. I don't know what they were thinking but is just plain disgusting. As for today at 9:44 am my subscription is cancelled, and will NEVER be renewed again. Period.

Nick   July 14th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Obama may have spent some time outside the US, but doesn't that increase his qualifications? The fact that he knows more about people overseas would help greatly given our current situation.

Obama 08.

Super D   July 14th, 2008 9:45 am ET

There is no telling what the true intention is. It's been spun several directions already. But this is the type of stuff Obama has got to endure, and frankly, he's bought some of it on himself.

JIM...TX   July 14th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Figures the HRC an Republican wingnuts will think this is just great…bet they'd think a picture of McBush trying to say.. comb his hair would be outrageous an mean. Too bad we can't stick to the real issues and not perceived ones for the next few months till Obama gets elected!

This is exactly what it is. Obama has a big mouth to camouflage everything. He has blinded everybody. This dress symobolizes the Northern part of Kenya which is bordering Somalia. You can actually see Somalis proudly wearing this attire who are actually muslims.
I had the pleasure to visit both kenya and Somalia sometime ago. CNN must have a documentary on this part of the world so people know where Barack is coming from. This is a fact.

It's stuff like this that just feeds into the ignorant, xenophobic perception that Barack Obama and his wife are the "scary" kind of black people.

I know where I'm voting in the fall, and as a Mexican-white man, it's Obama for me.

I do not see the humor in it.

We should stay focus to our countries problems. This is professionally tacky.

Obama should have the right to sue for slander. This is downright disgusting. I hope (and expect) that this magazine will see a drastic decline in sales.

I think the cover says it all — great job!
