Obama doesn't support a surge of troops in Afghanistan, just shifting our resources from Iraq to Afghanistan. And you don't need to be in Iraq to know what's going on there. Last time I checked, we HAVE lost thousands of American lives, we HAVE lost billions of dollars, and we ARE still fighting a war against someone who wasn't involved in the 9/11 attacks. Just a guess though.

McCain is wedded to a misguided Iraq effort. Obama is committed to finishing that fiasco on a high note and getting on to the REAL frontline: Afghanistan.

Read Obama's full speech, or watch it, and you'll find a very reasoned approach to a disastrous foreign policy mess. I think these people commenting here are just besides themselves because we haven't had a figure run for POTUS who spoke so clearly on so many issues. Americans must just be used to being lied to all the time. They can't handle a critical thinker in the White House.

Senator McCain's only ability is to criticize Senator Obama whenever Obama speaks. McCain has NO PLAN for the US. His advisors are JOKES and he only uses them to bolster his own self-serving image when necessary, then drops them when it gets leaked out how completely NUTS they are. McCain's day in the sun was in 1999/2000. Now, he's just NUTS himself.

Al,California July 15th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

You guy can call John McCain all the names you want, but the fact of t he matter is McCain is the most qualified person. How can you depend on a guy's judgement to run the country. One good vote on against the war on Iraq is "amazing judgement"? GOOD LORD! how about "20 years with Rev. Wright"? good judgement? how about allowing his two young daughters get on TV? Good judgement? How about the flip-flop on gun control? Good judgement? How about public campaign fianance? GOOD judgement? How about voting for the spy program of mr. bush? good judgement. This guy will do anything to get elected. I've had it with them democrate

Think long and hard people!!! DO YOU KNOW WHAT OBAMA's stand is on every issue that is important to US!

ONCE AGAIN TO THE RESCUE OF THE CLUELESS

If you can type all of that (totally inaccurate) drivelthen you can navigate to Obamas site and look up EVERY position on ALL of the pertinent issues. I KNOW you won't because people like you do not WANT to know. THEN what would you say in these blogs?

want to REALLY have fun? Look up McCains record and the 4 or 5 huge gaffs a day he makes....oh and dont forget get McCain to release his FULL Military records and not just the 17 of the over 600 pages that are there.

Opening ones eyes can be painful at times but walking around in the dark is worse.

That is all

Its a pity that Democrats show so much hatred in their attacks on Mccain. It now fully expalins their hatred of Bush. The same people who complained that the Republicans love to hate. Just read what you are writing here to know that you are the hater and have taken complete leave of your senses and civility. At this rate, many of you will commit succide come election day. Really Democrats, you have become quite pitiable.

This is to Al, California, That was a nice paragragh you wrote against Obama. Now how about writing the book of negatives about McCain. Its one thing to vote for who you want to vote for and thats the way America is. Its another thing to not put out there the negatives about McCain also like he is an angel and has not done anything wrong at all. Makes no sense to me. I think Obama would be a great pres. So stop talking about flip-flops, Rev Wright, Kids on Tv etc and start talking Rev Hagee, McCain's many flip-flops, lies that he has been caught in that are on record etc. Or how about just policies, like the economy, war, etc

One does not need to endanger troops on the ground to gain persective on the situation any more we have telephones and computers, it' not the 70's and earlier.

McCain is a hero, he is a Veteran, that does not qualify him for anything more than parade grand marshall.

The "surge" it has been a sucess. Not really, sure what this means any more. The Iraqi government did not take advantage of the "surge" to do what they needed to do. It appears to me the sucess belongs to General David Petraeus, who has people on the ground actually talking to the Iraqs. Any sucess in Iraq has been due to this man, not our elected officials.

MCCAIn shoud understand that in america, like in any other democratic country, it is the politic that lead the military. Obama don't have to speak to military before defining his politic. Military WILL execute what ever he decide. MCCAIN is laking leadership by saying that he need to consult this or that before defining what will be his politic in irak or afghanistan

I agree with Al from California except for one thing, Barack wasn't in the senate to vote on the Iraq war. He gave one speach about it and never spoke out against the war until he decided to run for President. His flip flop on FISA tells me he would have voted for the war if he had been in the senate. He has no spine. He is the change candidate, he changes his position daily.

Everyone is talking about not talking to leaders on the ground...Did they forget this war has been going on for more than 5 years that Obama is on the Foreign Relations Committee And he spoke with Crocker and Petraeus at the hearings just as he did(McCain) as well as Clinton.Going over there will be nothing but a "dog and pony show" .Does everyone remember the "secure" Iraq with the mob of security McCain and his Entourage had? This so-called surge also has paid militias that we taxpayers are supporting ,some of which turn right around and kill our troops with our own money...Still support this "surge"?

McCain every war you are directly participated in always endup a losing battle. like Vietnam and now Iraq, but yet you think you know more than everyone.

getting shot down from an air plan doesn't make you an hero of war. hero men women won first/second world war came home as liberators.

Iraqi did salute us as liberator instead they salute us with bullets and bombs.

Don't get into your head McCain and you are not the only POW . Your service is honour, but don't let it get over your head. Your naive about war, Mccain you haven't plan any successful war.
Getting someone to write yourspeech doen't make you experience war planner.

Even going to Iraq without stepping into the street with amour vehicles with lot of security doesn't give your so-call foreign experience.

Now you criticized Obama for making is plan before going to Iraq and meet with Generals, but you faild to realised that the same Generals can also talk with Obama even though he did not go to Iraq.

Mccain there something call phone and email conversation and many more secure ways of messaging without being ther in person.

McCain because you don't know how to use these service doesn't mean Obama can't use them to get is facts.

wakeup you are not talking to stupid once you know.

No body care about Wright anymore but you folks that weren't going to vote for Obama anyway so stop it already and leave some room for meaningfull comments. McCain now wants to surge in Afghanistan funny how this is the first time i remember him mentioning afghanistan. I guess the polls showing that or progress there didn't poll well so now John is on the band wagon..

"I know how to win wars". What!? How does he know how to win wars? From his Vietnam experience where he commanded no troops in a war we didn't actually win?

Or that he recommended an increase in ground troops that should have occurred 3 years earlier in a country that we never should have illegally invaded?

The only "wars" that McCain knows how to win involve playing cards.

I guess McCain didn't listen to all of the speech because Obama also said that he would talk and listen to what the generals on the ground have to say. This does not mean that he does not already have an idea what's going on. McCain's argument is faulting because if that was the case then every congressman that voted for the war should have gone there before casting a vote......

In the past year, McCain has changed his position on:

Off-shore drilling,
Immigration,
Torture,
Agents of religious intolerance,
Bush's tax cuts, and
Campaign finance

In each instance, he went from the right side to the wrong side.

Only on our foolish involvement in Iraq is he consistent : CONSISTENTLY WRONG!

Did Bush and company go to Iraq and get the facts on the ground before invading? Facts on the ground are required for tactical decisions, not strategy. Obama has been trying to get Americans to understand the difference, with little success it seems. ALL our problems stem from lack of strategy, which in turn comes from the culture of perpetual campaigning that Scott McLellan pointed out. Think long term my friends, or we are all doomed.

John McCain is simply the scariest thing since George Bush. If you need to recruit and train forces to attack the US wouldn't you seek out a place where the terrain makes it difficult to be discovered (see Russia's failed Afghan strategy).
This isn't Vietnam, many of these terrorists are well educated and from the finest American and European Colleges and Universities.
The goal of the terrorist is to destroy America in pieces, little by little so that the fear is constant. Hence the term TERRORist.

Somebody please say good night John!

How can McCain blast Obama when he doesn't know that the country of Czechoslovakia no longer exists and doesn't know how to use the internet to find out? My 80 year old father in law and my 75 year old father are competent internet users. Its interesting that McCain hasn't joined the 21st Century. Mc Cain has the nerve to criticize Obama when he's the one that got us in this mess to begin with. McCain's policies are out of date and out of step with the rest of the world just like his internet capabilities.

First, I hate the term "flip flop" for either candidate. It's juvenile, and somehow makes the notion of changing your mind in the face of evidence a bad concept.

Second, the "surge" has been overall a success... but there are a few caveats to "success." One is that it is largely predicated on America's continued heightened presence there. Two, areas outside of the "green zone" are still largely dangerous. Three, the underlying problems of Iraq (namely that we blew up their infrustructure and haven't substantially repaired it... yes... they still ration electrical usage) continue. Four, many of the Al Queda who fought in Iraq of now moved to fight in Afghanistan, because there are less American troops there (so we are now essentially playing musical chairs with them).

Third, what we really need to do to fight terrorism (and to be pull out of these coutnries) is to fight the underlying causes of terrorism... 1) lack of regional infrastructure and 2) poor perception of western (particularly american) countries abroad.

"McFossil is a joke.
I remember his trip around an Iraqi market.
I remember him singing about bombing Iran,
I remember him joking about killing iranian civilians with cigarettes,
I remember him saying that we could be in Iraq for 100 years,
I remember him lying about his record concerning veterans… and that was to a veteran's face,

I don't recall him correcting Bush about the GI bill, McCain voted against it but now is taking kudos for it. McCain you are a liar."

I know this is off subject, but since Bush gave his speech today and the Republicans are all for drilling off shore, I was wondering if anyone has asked McCain or Bush how many states are coming to them and saying that they want off shore drilling for their state? Is this more grandstanding, or are there actually states that will allow it to happen off their coasts?

I cannot understand why he is promoting surges in Afghanistan while, at the same time, wanting to cut and run from Iraq

um, because the people we're fighting in afghanistan provide a safe haven for those who attacked us? over your head, huh?

ZZZZZZZZzzzzzzz..... anyone notice that his audience is almost all white and really old? I nearly fell asleep listening to him sputter, stutter, and drone on and on and on and on....

I could give a better speech than McCain when I was in high school. I wouldn't trust that man to talk to our enemies. But then, he'd probably have that old weasel Lieberman there to whisper in his hearing aid.

Here is a man who doesn't know that Czechoslovakia hasn't existed for 15 yrs. Who thinks that Putin is the President of Germany. He doesn't know the difference between shia and sunni. Doesn't know that he voted against birth control, the GI Bill, Veteran health care. Doesn't remember that he said he doesn't know anything about the economy.

Come on McCain, you just want to bomb the living daylights out of them too. Got another diddy to Sing-A-Long like your "Bomb, Bomb, Bomb. Bomb, Bomb Iran." Give 'em some of that American might and fright. Shock and awe. Kill those women, elderly, and children who only look like innocent civilians. They all need to go. Everyone is suspicious.

Uh Oh.... wait.....uh, hold on a minute. Looks like we have no fuel. Our transports and bombers won't fly without fuel. Our jeeps and tanks won't move without fuel. Oops. Someone forgot about a realistic McCain energy policy.

I couldn't agree more with every word that Bill said about both Obama and McCain. I wish there were another candidate who truly could help this country return to the country I've always perceived it to be....The greatest country in the World. Sadly, our economy, people's perceptions of the war, gas prices, etc. are bringing the American people down. We're desperate for things to get better, and are believing just about everything that we want to hear.

JOHN MCCAIN AS CHANGED POSITIONS ON MANY ISSUES THAN OBAMA, AND THE MEDIA IS NOT ATTACKING HIM ON IT. IT IS ALSO CLEAR THAN JOHN MCCAIN SPENDS MOST OF HIS TIME ATTACHING OBMAMA INSTEAD OF PREACHING HIS POLICIES WHICH IS NOT TOO FAR FROM BUSH. IT IS A SHAME HOW REPUBLICAN TREAT POLITICS.

Forget rationality. This is an unconstitutional war. Our President has illegally put our service men and women in harms way. Obama is no better kids. Even after reading intelligence reports that state Iran has no intention to develop nuclear weapons he is still suggesting they are a threat. This CFR errand boy has been groomed from day one to maintain the empire.
