Planned Parenthood is taking aim at McCain over his Viagra-birth control moment.

(CNN) — Planned Parenthood Action Fund is launching a new ad Wednesday in crucial battleground states set to highlight a campaign trail moment John McCain would rather soon forget.

The 30-second spot aimed at women voters shows McCain's apparent unease when a reporter asked him last week whether it was unfair that some insurance plans covered Viagra and not birth control.

"Ever use birth control? Than you'll want to hear this," the ad's narrator states before a flustered McCain is shown saying, "I don't know enough about it to give you an informed answer."

Planned Parenthood spokesman Tait Sye says the ad will run in Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, New Mexico, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Washington, D.C. during television programs popular with women — including Wednesday's season premier of "Project Runway" and "Army Wives" on Lifetime. It will also air during Oprah in some markets.

The group is hoping this issue in particular resonates with the broad swath of the women voters McCain is trying to court — according to one study Planned Parenthood cites 98 percent of sexually active women have used at least one form of birth control.

The off-message moment stemmed from a comment by a member of McCain’s own team: national co-chairwoman Carly Fiorina, who had said earlier women often express frustration over the fact many health insurance plans cover Viagra but not birth control medication.

A McCain spokesman later said the Arizona senator supported competition in the healthcare industry, presumably allowing women to nix policies that cover Viagra but not their specific needs.

Ok, boys and girls….now settle down…..I am going to ask a question and I want everyone who thinks the answer is YES to raise their hands…..

Does McSenile use Viagra?

Does McSenile get campaign contributions from pharmaceuticals like the ones who peddle Viagra?

Does McSenile have a selective memory?

Does McSenile sometimes remind you of Goldmembers' Fa-Ja?

Does McSenile have selective memory?

Does McSenile stand a chance in hades of ever coming across as a genuine human being?

Thank you for your participation boys and girls.

Scarlet, the point is that this was an issue that McCain did not care enough to be informed about.

At least McCain is old enough to remember how to respect people especially women. you don't hear him slandering is grandmother just to make a political point. and I'm sure he is man enough to plunge the toilet and take out the trash. which is all more than we can say for his holiness obama. and if you are one of those people that learned how to shoot a gun then maybe he can ridicule you like he did Hillary calling her Annie Oakley. if women are to move forward it will not be by obama's effort.

Sean   July 16th, 2008 1:46 pm ET

Unfortunate to see McCain taken so off-guard by such a simple question that relates to the needs of a huge percentage of women.

Republicans can go after Obama all they want on his "experience", but that will never change that Obama actually has the ABILITY to answer and address issues like these. McCain just wants to bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran and kill off the rest of the Iranians with cigarettes, and then presumably start sending shipments of viagra to Checkoslovakia. Impressive that he apparently has the ability to travel through time to countries that no longer exist….

And that's what "experience" gets you….

Bill   July 16th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Does it occur to anyone that the question is illogical and unfair? The question suggests that men and women are treated differently because insurance carriers will pay for Viagra but not birth control. Actually, insurance carriers won't pay for birth control for men or women. Plans that cover sterilization will pay for either a vasectomy or a tubal ligation. Viagra treats a dysfunction of the male reproductive system that happens to be unique to men and has nothing to do with birth control. I’m no fan of McCain but the question was illogical. If insurance carriers were treating men and women differently for the same physical condition that would be unfair but that is not the case here.

JB   July 16th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Viagra and Birth Control ARE NOT THE SAME THING!!!

Viagra is used to propagate the species. The other is for pleasure.

Without viagra, some couples would not be able to reproduce. Birth control is not for the good of society. It is for the good of the ndividual. Therefore, it should be available, but not covered!!!

Also, remember when Bill Clintons sexual life came into question, and whether or not Hillary and him were getting it on. Liberals were outraged. But, now, it's OK to discuss!!! Hypocrites!

David, New York, NY   July 16th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

What percentage of us actually has the luxury of choosing our insurance? Most of us have to make do with whatever our employers offer us, thereby rendering the idea of competition within the industry irrelevant to the majority of Americans.

America for Obama   July 16th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

McCain is well beyond the stage of being able to get it up unless he uses a popsickle stick to prop it upright. C'mon people, the guy doesn't use the internet so I'm sure he's probably never even heard of Viagra before and if he did he forgot. John McCain propably thinks that Viagra is a terrorist orginization and we should probably bomb them before they start hating us for our freedom!

Eric - Pittsburgh   July 16th, 2008 1:43 pm ET

Hmm… how does not supporting birth control equal to not being supportive of women's rights? Last time I checked it takes 2 to make a baby.

And I'm tired of you Dems crying about how everything isn't "fair". It's "unfair" to cover Viagra and not BC. Guess what? Life isn't fair, deal with it. You Dems cry about everyhing. Insurance is a private business. If they don't cover something, too bad.

Libs = Big Crybabies

CJ   July 16th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

For dollor, you think this is not controversial. You must be a man. Viagra is taken by many men across this country who are not "old" as you so state. Now, if you think it is okay to advertise Viagra and have insurance companies pay for this drug but not birth control, I am sure you would not mind paying for the thousands of children across this country who are being raised by single parents, and what would you suggest would be adequate compensation for a woman who works in excess of 2-3 jobs to raise and support a child after a man walks out the door and never looks back. Child support, come on, do you honestly think it contributes to all equally across the land to what is needed to raise a child. Think again. Some amounts are set as low as 25.00 a week. From the single father standpoint, I would venture there are thousands across the land that were denied child support when raising their children while their wives were with other men simply because they were threatened with loss of custody. Come into the real world. You must be sitting in a utopia.

NPA   July 16th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

I saw the ad. It was good. But the ad is missing the second part where the reporter followed McCain's answer with the question: but you voted on a bill that required insurance companies to pay for Viagra but not birth control. That second part of the incident really drove the whole thing home — McCain voted on a bill against women, but when pressed on the issue, his excuse is that he does not know enough about it.

John in Columbus Ohio   July 16th, 2008 1:41 pm ET

More then the Viagra and Birth Control issue, look at McCain's *response* to the question.

Would you want him doing that on the international stage, when addressing the UN, or during a press conference? We've already had eight years of an inebriated simian who is barely capable of coherent speech, we don't need a senile guy whose mind idles awkwardly for several agonizing seconds while the gears slip trying to figure out what he wants to say.

That's unacceptable.

Tim   July 16th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

So he doesn't know enough about it so rather than stick his foot in his mouth and spit out something that is crap he says he doesn't know. That's a heck of a lot better than someone just spitting out the PC answer and not actually knowing anything. The president has an entire group of people (the Cabinet) that figures stuff out like that - the best president isn't necessarily the smartest one but the one who surrounds himself with smart people… The most dangerous president is one who thinks he is so smart he doesn't need feedback/opinions - I'm MORE likely to vote for McCain since he doesn't speak to stuff which he doesn't know about…

ChicagoJosh   July 16th, 2008 1:40 pm ET

This is a great ad. Good job Planned Parenthood. If the media won't address this stuff, then someone should pick up the pieces.

This is an amazing point that McCain should of had an opinion to. What is more important to our society? Viagra, or birth control?

In his defense, there were probably too many conflicting thoughts that he was scared to give an opinion. Not wanting to offend the Catholics who might be against birth control, not wanting to scare off the viagra users, and not wanting to look like Bob Dole and endorsing Viagra

But i think he was scared that he was going to get caught with viagra pills.

Oh yeah, this is a comment that shows how poor of a mistake they'd be making to move from supporting Clinton to supporting McCain, instead of Obama. Don't worry though, sure they'll come back out of their caves and just pretend like this McCain incident didn't happen, until he does something like it again.

Their votes, if they are who the say they are and now for McCain, are only delusional, self serving acts and shows their real lack of support for this country, it's citizens, and their own gender.

combat soldier   July 16th, 2008 1:38 pm ET

I hear McCain's comment as an attempt to provide an honest-straight answer, rather than opting to answer with an embellished response based on what the questioner expected to hear. That kind of moral strength and fiber is what I want from a leader.
I hope, trust, and pray that those entities and institutions who chose to further their own cause by exploiting this via commercials will be seen as what they are by US voters.
I am surprised at the preponderance of comments that appear to be based on a perception of reality altered by ignorance or by personal bias.

The bigger problem by far is making birth control pills widely available in Third World regions where populations are skyrocketing out of control.
Not only should birth control pills be covered under insurance plans…but the U.S. should adopt a program to subsidize disbursement to areas that have shortages of food and over-population.

Wake up America McCain's answer to everything is let the markets decided. Well the markets have decided the rates for interest on loans and mortgages so there is one clue. The markets decide on the cost of health insurance and what coverage you can expect to get so there is another clue.

How about the biggie let the markets decide where the products will be manufactured as corporations are more concerned with the country's welfare than profits so there is a real big clue.

As far as women's rights are concerned McCain has gone against them on each and every issue but how many women will become of aware of this and vote in their own best interest? That's the biggie!!

DON'T YOU PEOPLE GET IT???   July 16th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

McCain is anti-women! He persistently votes against women. I don't understand how any female or lover of females, sons, husbands brothers, boyfriends, could ever even consider voting for McCain.

The PUMA people and others who were formerly for Hilary and are now for for McCain get me the most. The man called Hillary a B and laughed when someone else did both on national TV. He says he is in favor of women picking their own policies allowing for MCP and nixing Viagra. Does he not realize that the majority of people on insurance are on work policies? We all can't afford to get a specific policy that costs hundreds of dollars more per month, to pick and choose whether we get BCP or viagra. He voted AGAINST BCP being covered, when he voted.

I don't understand why the media has not covered more of his gaffes and blunders. I realize that it would appear to be biased, however, he needs to be known by the American Public, and they need to know how he doesn't understand things, and how he has flip flopped on issues that he has voted against or for for the past 20 years.

You lefty's crack me up. At least he had the courage to say he didn't know enough about the issue to provide an informed response. The issue is bigger than Viagra vs. Birth Control Pills. It's about WHY insurance companies don't cover them and why they cover the other. I guess he could have gone the Obama route and made something up at the moment and then change his position at another convenient moment and then changed it back at another convenient moment etc. etc.

What kills me is our scientists are creating this drug for old men to get it up, when they need to make a birth control for young men so they can keep it down!

Birth rates are out of control, and as a woman, I feel it is my responsibility to myself to protect myself, which is why I use birth control. Men however are just told to strap it up! I feel like the birth control should be focused on men more so than women, especially since it is the man's sperm that when joined w/ the seed creates the baby…not only that but a man can get 10 women pregnant per day if he wanted to! That is ridiculous! I believe companies should restructure their plans to include option add-ons for birth control for women and Viagra for the men.

Too bad we live in such a man's world…

McCain doesn't care about women and that has been obvious before this moment. He wasn't around for his children, he treated his wives like dogs who should always be in the kitchen, he calls them the famous C word when they disagree. He cheated on his exwife with Cindy while on business in Washington, both Ronald and Nancy Reagan hated him for years because of the way he treated his ex-wife. He has always voted against equal pay for equal work and many other issues that are not supportive of women needs in this country. McCain is a sexist and just ask Cindy, she hides and does stuff behind his back because she is scared of him (eg: her drug abuse and getting a pilot's license and buying an airplane).

Women who can't afford birth control certainly can't afford a baby, so clearly it should be important to make sure birth control is available and affordable. I can't understand why McCain doesn't get this simple issue…

Yes we can!   July 16th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

OUT OF TOUCH!…why in the world would you need to know about this to give a informed answer…..it was a question my 15 year old daughter could have answered and she's not on birth control…

WoW   July 16th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

Well… looks like McCain won't get the "Free Abortions for Everybody" crowd…

I'm sure he was counting on them going Republican!!!!

Sam   July 16th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

hahahahahah….hahahahah…wait a minute, I gotta catch my breath. Just saw the video of McStumped on his reaction to the Viagra question, that was hiliarious. And some of you want this man to be president of the USA? I gotta play it again…hahahahaha…..

Mike - Texas   July 16th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

Hey McCain

Having insurance covering birth control pills for women is a LOT better than ABORTION and killing babies!! Think about it!

But that is right, Obama is FOR ABORTION and killing babies.

G   July 16th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

Please, stop lumping all women into one group. A great many of us know that a vote for McCain is a vote against our own interests. McCain is not much older than I am, but he appears never to have moved beyond the '50s mindset regarding women. Were this man to become President, the advances made by women over recent decades would be reversed. McCain is trapped in the wrong decade. In his mind, he's still fighting the Cold War, stopping Commies, and keeping the "ladies" where they belong. Vile.

Tera Patrick   July 16th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

A picture is worth a thousand words …. McCain is clearly not informed on this topic. I'm not even talking about whether I agree with his point of view or not … he doesn't even have one!

Ignorance about somethings can be forgiven but for a guy running for President for the 2nd time, it's telling that he hasn't cared enough about women before this to have thought this through.

Let's wait for his handlers to tell him how to respond.

The Surly Scholar   July 16th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

Okay, aside from all the gross Viagra jokes (can we please stop invoking that image, by the way?), I'm glad to see organizations like Planned Parenthood reaching out to women voters and trying to inform them that McCain simply doesn't have their interests in mind. At all.

anonymous   July 16th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

VIAGRA needs to be banned. It is absolute absurd for insurance companies to pay for it when they won't even pay for many needed medications! If the men can't get it up, get over it and learn sex isn't everything!

Michele Hussein, Oregon   July 16th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

As a pro-life Democrat who finds more responsibility toward life in the Democratic party, be prepared for this Planned Parenthood sponsored ad to be spun by the right wing as a left-leaning ad supported by baby killers.

I understand some of their sentiment in that I believe killing across the board is immoral. This is why I'm calling on all reasonably minded Democrats to support the push to have the Abortion Reduction Act embraced by the Dems platform. It DOES NOT TAKE AWAY A WOMAN'S RIGHT TO CHOOSE. It does work to help some of the economic conditions, for example, that in the end might support the mother to bring her child into the world. And we all know Dems in power have policies to care for people once they are born UNLIKE the other side of the coin. Please consider and support this effort to save lives while retaining the right to choose.

Jamaal kansas   July 16th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

Mccain is old a liar and want to take the right to choose from women and he don't believe in birth control. Hillary Supports as angry as you are are you really going to throw away every thing that countless generations have worked for just because you are angry Roe VS Wade This Election we will tell if American Women will really CUT of Your NOSE Just to Spite Your FACE! Vote with your Daughters and Sons well being and Freedon on Nov. 5 Vote For Barack Obama!

texas democrat   July 16th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

i actually watched a longer clip of that interview last week. It's rediculous and sad. I mean, the questioner repeats herself about 3 times and really only is asking "what's your opinion?" At some point mccain says something brilliant like "i dont know i'll have to look at my voting record on that". Well, john, your voting record is only going to tell you what your opinion was before you went senile, its not going to help you answer any new questions as president. Cant you just see the red phone ringing at 2 am? "i'm sorry, i'll have to check my voting record on that. i'll definately try to get back to you later today…."

Any woman who hears about this and can still consider voting for mccain…. i dont know. they need help. badly.

Obama has always praise McCain for his service to the nation.

Eric I agree with you ,all McCain had to say was no it was not fair. The fact birth-control can help to prevent unwanted pregnancies ; which in turn may prevent abortions of these unwanted pregnancies, which MCain is against, would have been a good thought. men with diabetes and other a few other diseases that prevent them from getting an erection is why some insurance companies cover viagra. same for birth control they will cover it if there is a medical reason for it but they wont pay for condoms for men the issue is apples and oranges.

and im not a mcain supporter nor an obama one but the mcbush and mcsame line alot of you use is tragically unfunny. noone has butted heads with george bush more over the years than john mcain. obama has been more in line with bushes policies lately than alot of republicans

Michele Hussein, Oregon   July 16th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

I'm glad this exposed McCain's inability to answer a very simple question. When asked an AIDS question in the past, he did the same thing in that he said he would "have to check my voting record".

Have to say that I feel sorry for him, and whoever we do not agree with deserves the same respect we would like to be given (to those whom the shoe fits on these blogs), but this should be a good wake-up-call for those on the fence. Presidential caliber? Am afraid not.

McCain is no friend to women's issues or women in general. Come on, America, let's send John McCain back to the senate in November, a job he is better suited for. Judging from his tortured response to this quesdion, he certainly is not good a making decisions any magnitude.

This was an uncomfortable moment for McCain. Imagine this man talking about issues that matter to the average woman for FOUR years. He simply won't talk about it, because he can't, and it's not his fault. He's just a man who lived his prime in a different time and a different era.

Barack could probably talk more directly to these issues as he has a young family and is more current. I think all male candidates should have a crash course in women's medical issues.

Planned Parenthood is not partisan is it? They ought to lose their tax exemption for this ad. Personally I do not think that Insurance Companies should pay for Viagra. Birth Control is a different story. Maybe Congree should make a deal and make Insurance Companies pay for Birth Control but taxpayers not have to pay for abortions even though I am pro-choice for the 1st trimester only. But still this ad is proof of Planned Parenthood's bias and I would not support them ever.

This is the real McCain: a man who can't remember how he voted or if he even voted. He sits there in silence, then starts looking around at the ceiling and squints his eyes trying to remember the script for soft peddling, only to conclude he doesn't know enough about the subject.

I respect Mr. McCain, but there are so many blunders that he has made on the campaign trail, the public needs to pay attention. He doesn't seem to have an opinion that is not pre-scripted by his speech writers. Having a man as inarticulate as Bush for the last 8 years, and basically totally depenidng on his speech writers without a thought of his own should warn us all of the similar template with McCain. Please America, wake up. REPUBLICAN PRIORITIES.

"I don't know enough about it to give you an informed answer" was pretty bad. Perhaps he should consult with Cindy. But watching the pained expression on his face, rolling his eyes, basically looking like a deer caught in head lights………Is he Presidental material? He does however have the full support of the women of PUMA! Yip, he'll be great for women. The sadistic part of me hopes they get him!

jim   July 16th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

Great ad Planned Parenthood. Thats your guy PUMA's; Meow…..

Paul   July 16th, 2008 12:14 pm ET

Talk about confused.
The Republicans want to appeal to women but don't want to support birth control. What to do! What to do!.

Biff Biffington   July 16th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

I like it…..

Tarla   July 16th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Yeah and considering birth control is used for other things, not just birth control. But I'm sure McSame dosen't understand that.

Just say no to McBush

ProundToBeDemocrat   July 16th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Linda31   July 16th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Beautifully done!

R.I.F.   July 16th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Perfect. He needs to get called out on this. He had Carly Fionia out there making it sound like he is pro-womens rights when he actually has a zero rating with women groups. Can't have it both ways Mr. McCain. Either you play to your hardcore "women aren't equal" conservative base or move to reality.

Robert   July 16th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

McCain was right when he said he couldn't give an informed response to the question. The problem is he is too uninformed on too many subjects…DUH and he is running for President of the United States of America??.

NPA   July 16th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

It's baffling how CNN has avoided calling that moment what it was. It was NOT a Viagra moment. It was about McCain choosing to support a bill that required insurance companies to pay for Viagra but not for birth control pills. It
