Watch part of Romney's interview with Wolf Blitzer.

(CNN)—Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney laughed off questions about his vice presidential potential Wednesday.

“With regards to all the people that think I might be on some kind of shortlist, the only one that really counts in my regard is John McCain,” Romney told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. “I don’t think he’s told anybody what his thinking is.”

The former Massachusetts governor continued to downplay his chances of joining the GOP ticket. “I don’t want to engage in any speculation with regards to the VP sweepstakes,” he said. “I expect to support the administration and the McCain team. I don’t expect to be part of it.”

Election Center: Who's on McCain's VP list?

In recent months, Romney has been a constant presence on the airwaves as a surrogate for John McCain’s campaign, often serving as a tough critic of presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama.

“People recognize they need new leadership, strong leadership,” Romney told CNN last month. “Not somebody who is consistently putting himself and his party ahead of the interests of the nation.”

Earlier this week, McCain praised Romney’s support of his own presidential bid, adding fuel to the mounting VP speculation.

“I’m appreciative every time I see Mitt on television on my behalf,” McCain said at a fundraising event in New Mexico. “He does a better job for me than he did for himself, as a matter of fact.”

On Wednesday, Romney agreed. “The campaigning I did for myself resulted in a loss,” Romney said, laughing. “I don’t want to hurt [McCain], I want to help him.”

What if McCain offers the VP to Colin Powell? Does that take away any black vote from Obama? Or if McCain goes after a democrat say Sebelius from Kansas or even Hillary. If McCain can get a significant voter block like women or some democrats he wins.

"Obama hates America, plain and simple. He is an elitist liberal and that's not going to fly well with the common sense, hard-working American come November."

BRIAN, you are spending way too much time watching FOX and listening to rush, which is evident by all the WRONG statements you made!!! try changing the channel and switching to a new station every once in a while.

it's hilarious, you non-thinkers give yourselves away immediately, with your completely stupid comments!

Romney is another republican chicken hawk. He, and his healthy sons could do much more for their country fighting the Bush, Cheney, McCain, Kyle, McConnell republican war. Go for it. We've had enough of him. How many masochistic voters are still supporting these republican clowns?

California Gold   July 16th, 2008 7:28 pm ET

I'm certain Mr. Romney brings a lot to the table. This could enhance the McCain health care platform. Between the VP Romney and wife Cindy, it's a cinch McCain would be in favor of insurance covering Botox treatments, face lifts and implants plus Viagra.

Anonymous   July 16th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

Romney supports the Bush, Cheney, McCain war, he , and his sons should get their rearends over there now. The republicans wanted this nightmare, let them serve. The chicken hawks are many. Once he wins the war he can come back, and run for president again.

Mauri   July 16th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

If somebody doesn't do something to turn this economy around, bad things are going to happen to this country and our way of life. As in the '92 race when the motto was "It's the economy, stupid," so that's where we are today. Never mind Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan — we can take care of those. So to concentrate on the economy, we must ask ourselves who, on the horizon, is experienced enough to get us out of this mess? Look at the candidates. Neither knows anything about it, so they must look to a running mate for that expertise. Look first at Obama and his choices. Slim pickings, I say. On the other hand, there's McCain and Mitt, the expert economist, who can put his monetary and financial experience and successes where his mouth is. Need we say more?

Under which party and president did 9/11 happen?

Under which party and president did we invaded Afganistan and missed Osama Bin Laden?

Under which party and president did America lost it credibility and respect all over the world since 1777?

Under which party and president did our leaders look straight in the camera and lie even when they are called christian conservatives?

Under which party and president did we see so much political victimization, political manipulation, highten hypocricy, and adsolute disappearance of honest leadership from Washington while so called conservatives kept quite and followed like lost sheep in the wilderness?

Under which party and president did we lied to the American people, and invaded Iraq, wasted tax payers money to provide business to our cronnies and corporate America, while destroying the social fabric of Iraq?

Under which party and president did Iran become strong and embolden?

Under which party and president did the rich who did not need it, and did not ask for it got a tax cut, and double our national debt that took over 200years to accrue?

I think McCain can pick whomever he wants, when the time is right for him.
But, like with the puma folks and former Hillary supporter folks, I ask a similar question to those who support Romney now as VP choice.

Moderator/reporter: How do you square all of the comments you made about Senator McCain in the primaries, when it was pretty clear you didn't like each other?

And, if you supported Bush over McCain in 2000, why do you now feel McCain is ready? Or put another way, why was Bush better than McCain in 200?

Just curious, but does John McCain and the white house take their cues from Obama? Obama has been saying we need diplomatic relations with foreign countries and mccain bashed him for it. Now the white house is talking to Iran after they already talked to North Korea a month ago. Obama also said since last year the real threat of terrorism is Afghanistan while mccain said we need to stay the course in Iraq. Wonder what mccain is saying now that he looks like a bad judgement idiot. So much for that 'experience' huh and all that foreign policy bruh hah, huh John?

Well, I don't know what to think of Mitt. He keeps moving around politically, so it's hard to figure out what he'd actually be good at (other than dancing around issues).

One thing I am sure of is that the VP spot for McCain is the kiss of death. McCain's campaign is already going down like the Titanic. To be offered the VP spot would be like the captain of the Titanic offering you the First Mate job, right after the ship hit the iceberg. Not a very enticing job, and politically a dead end. Any savvy politician is going to run for the hills if they get offered this job. Watch for some young buck who has little political experience to finally wind up with the job. I wonder if Dan Quayle is still looking for work?

No substance but a lot of cash, which helps. He sounds desperate to wanting to become VP. He wants to stay in the picture for when its his time. Big if, when McCain wins, he is in good position come next term. otherwise its over. As it stands now wouldn't be surprised that potential VP candidates would decline the prospect to stand next to McCain, with danger of loosing and career prospects. So, in end Romney is available, eager and not worried too much about immediate future, maybe McCain's only choice. Overall a weak choice but that's the state where he is in.

Yes, Romney has flip flopped on one issue abortion.

Obama has flipped flopped on more issues than anyone who started out in the initial race for the presidency. These include his foreign policy, his economic plans, which church he belongs to, and the most hilarious to me, if or if not he should wear a pin of the United States flag on his jacket.

Do we really want a guy in office who gets confused about his religious belief and what accessories he should wear when he wakes up in the morning?

Proud American   July 16th, 2008 4:52 pm ET

I really am not sure who the best choice for VP is for either candidate (I do not envy that decision), but I am tired of the nasty, hateful, personal attacks against all of the candidates. I really do not understand why all of these people (mostly Obama and Huckabee supporters) hate Romney so much. Take some deep breaths . . . and get some therapy.

Lets stick to the real issues (i.e. the economy, the war in Iraq, energy independence, illegal immigration, health care etc . . .).

I will admit that the entire race could change directions based on who each candidate picks as their VP.

from Afgan to Viagra, from Off shore to Czech from Iraq to his own campaign from GI Bill to knowing "little" about the economy poor John seems like a small child lost in the storm.
the only thing John seems to have going for him is the fact that he was able to loose 6 planes and was captured as a POW ( where he gave up a little military info to the enemy) 40 years ago. that's not the experience we can believe in…GOP dropped the ball on this one too.

John Agree With Barack   July 16th, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Thanks John for finally coming to your senses and following Obama's lead on Afghanistan. Better late than never, huh John.

Romney Is A Pig   July 16th, 2008 4:34 pm ET

He should laugh because he's a joke. I hope McCain selects him because I respect McCain, but I don't respect Romney. He sat in the Mormon church his entire life (more than twenty years), when their faith didn't allow blacks to join and thought they were subhuman. Obama supporters are ready for him…bring it on.

Why are we not hearing about McWar's flip-flops in the middle east?

Don't worry about Mitt he will change his mind in time for the next interview.

Do you think he's wearing his magic underwear?

John   July 16th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Brandon Hillary PUMA 4Mc, you are very well full of it. You completely made that up buddy. In fact they do not like her that much in Alaska because she likes to give land to oil companies, do your hmwk buddy before you start talking about records. This is actually the tenth post that I have read from you with nothing but complete lies. Best record out of all governors? She is not even in the top ten. Google best records for governors and you will see the compiled list.

McCain=the draft   July 16th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

Oh no, the slick used car salesman is back, trying to sell you the old clunker!

Mark, B'ham., Al.   July 16th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

I voted for Romney in the Primary, As foar as the Economy goes he beats the s*#t out of Barack and his democratic whinners when it comes to knowledge about the economy and bussiness. Obama and his posey are "Lawyers". They know as little about economics as a Navy Fighter Pilot. They only know how to tell "Lawyer Truth" and snow the public about how smart they are and that they know everything.

Obama Supporter from FL   July 16th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Every time they post a Mitt Romney article, people say really horrible stuff about Mormonism. I'm not a Mormon, but it would really be great if people could criticize Romney for something other than his religion. And frankly, there are MANY reasonable options for critique, like his stance on the issues…

Adam   July 16th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

McCain hasn't told anyone yet of what he's really thinking with this topic or any topic.

NParry   July 16th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Romney should become a game-show host! He's too slick and too power-hungry, willilng to say anything for that legitimacy (read: not mainstream Christian) he so craves. It'd be a bad choice from Mr. McBush.

DflateMacsStr8TalkXpress: Econ MIA, AWOL on facts, POW from reality   July 16th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

O.K. CNN, where's the BREAKING NEWS HEADLINE:

JOHN MCCAIN REFINES AFGHANISTAN PLAN (Oops! After hearing it from Mr. Obama)? Geez, talk about giving someone a free ride! Why isn't this the foreign policy "firestorm" for today? Probably because you are too busy removing your noses from his backside and calling McSame a "maverick" instead of the Great Pretender.

President McCain   July 16th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Sarah Palin for VP!

Griff   July 16th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

You shouldn't Mr…. John has to win!!! First….Your Party has so much to offer, so much more than Borack Obama… You work as a Team…. And you win the chance to take, a country out of the Red, and into the Black…. They Black in America…. Ok! But… What do they really want???

chuck   July 16th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Mit needs to go away, he's always knocking Obama, and he's not in the race so he needs to sit down and shut up.

Bob Indianapolis, IN   July 16th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Nice hair! Looks just like a game show host…

Billy Johnson   July 16th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Speaking of flip floppers, has anyone seen the recent moves by Bush and Co.? Obama has been saying he will talk to all other countries- now Bush has flipped and is sending someone to Iran!
Obama has said we need to get out of Iraq and focus on Afghanistan- guess what? - read todays headlines, thats what they are going to do. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Doris,Memphis,TN   July 16th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

McCain will not pick Romney. He is too envious of him.
I am a democrat. I do not understand why the Republicans
would select McCain over Romney for their nominee.
Wait, yes I do, they picked Bush in 2000.

bill for barack   July 16th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Ya know,he's absolutely right. Mitt Romney is a joke - no matter whose party he joins.

eric   July 16th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

I hope McCain does pick this guy. He's a bottomless source of stupid comments and fake tanning lotion. His fake and forced smiles are even more laughable than McCain himself. I can't wait for the reruns of the Republican debate in the Reagan Library to start if this guy gets chosen. Of course, McCain has shown anything but sound judgement during the course of this campaign and can't even get a simple decision, like whether its fair for insurance companies to pay for Viagra and not birth control, right, so I'm sure he'll blow this one and pick Romney. Ahhh, its good to be a Democrat. :)

Democrats Unite & Vote Big   July 16th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Don't know about the VP gig, but Romney has overtaken George Hamilton as the suntan poster boy. Up next, the gray temple king.

Paul, Tampa, FL   July 16th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

He's the perfect choice. He is every bit as fake as McCain is awful.

Mary   July 16th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

You should have had subtitles for what Mitt was really saying. All you would have seen is, “I AM FLIP FLOP YES I AM, I AM FLIP FLOP YES I CAN, …….. who let the dogs out”

McCain has lost his straight talk in this campaign. So why not add the KING of Flip Flopping!!

Mitt the Flip Flopper Romney for VP!!!!

Time to change you slogan McCain!

Michael Dukakis   July 16th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

You are LYING …..

Kim   July 16th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

I am glad Romney laughed it off. The voters laughed him off in the Primary also.

Brandon Hillary PUMA 4Mc   July 16th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Forget Romney Mc Cain needs Sarah Palin. Her reform record in Alaska has given her the highest approval ratings of any governor in the country even state democrats like her bipartisan approaches.
Women if you examine this woman and her record you would be proud to call her your vice president—Shes no Hillary but a fine woman and the best vp choice coming from this male voters opinion.
