Gore challenged the nation on the fight against global climate change.
Gore challenged the nation on the fight against global climate change.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Just as John F. Kennedy set his sights on the moon, Al Gore is challenging the nation to produce every kilowatt of electricity through wind, sun and other Earth-friendly energy sources within 10 years, an audacious goal he hopes the next president will embrace.

The Nobel Prize-winning former vice president said fellow Democrat Barack Obama and Republican rival John McCain are "way ahead" of most politicians in the fight against global climate change.

Rising fuel costs, climate change and the national security threats posed by U.S. dependence on foreign oil are conspiring to create "a new political environment" that Gore said will sustain bold and expensive steps to wean the nation off fossil fuels.

"I have never seen an opportunity for the country like the one that's emerging now," Gore told The Associated Press in an interview previewing a speech on global warming he was to deliver Thursday in Washington.

Gore said he fully understands the magnitude of the challenge.

The Alliance for Climate Protection, a bipartisan group that he chairs, estimates the cost of transforming the nation to so-called clean electricity sources at $1.5 trillion to $3 trillion over 30 years in public and private money. But he says it would cost about as much to build ozone-killing coal plants to satisfy current demand.

"This is an investment that will pay itself back many times over," Gore said. "It's an expensive investment but not compared to the rising cost of continuing to invest in fossil fuels."

Called an alarmist by conservatives, Gore has made combatting global warming his signature issue, a campaign that has been recognized worldwide — from an Academy Award to a Nobel Prize. He portrayed Thursday's speech as the latest and most important phase in his effort to build public opinion in favor of alternative fuels.

He knows politicians fear to act unless voters are willing to sacrifice — and demand new fuels.

"I hope to contribute to a new political environment in this country that will allow the next president to do what I think the next president is going to think is the right thing to do," Gore said. "But the people have to play a part." He likened his challenge to Kennedy's pledge in May 1961 to land a man on the moon by the end of the decade.

Gore narrowly lost the presidential race in 2000 to then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush after a campaign in which his prescient views on climate change took a back seat to other issues. While dismissing a suggestion that he pulled his punches eight years ago, Gore said his goal now is to "enlarge the political space" within which politicians can "deal with the climate challenge."

To meet his 10-year goal, Gore said nuclear energy output would continue at current levels while the nation dramatically increases its use of solar, wind, geothermal and so-called clean coal energy. Huge investments must also be made in technologies that reduce energy waste and link existing grids, he said.

If the nation fails to act, the cost of oil will continue to rise as fast-growing China and India increase demand, Gore said. Sustained addiction to oil also will place the nation at the mercy of oil-producing regimes, he said, and the globe would suffer irreparable harm.

Government experts recently predicted that, at the current rate, world energy demand will grow 50 percent over the next two decades. The Energy Information Administration also said in its long-range
forecast to 2030 that the world is not close to abandoning fossil fuels despite their effect on global warming.

While electricity production is only part of the nation's energy and climate change problem, Gore said, "If we meet this challenge we will solve the rest of it."

To all those who say this can't be done…Remember your history..WWII this country performed miracles in production. There is nothing this country can't do if we put our minds to it and all pull together. It won't be 100% in ten years, but we will be long on our way down the road. Have faith in America and it's people, the country that put men on the moon. We can do anything,,YES WE CAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

David, Silver Spring, MD   July 17th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

We as a nation are resembling the U.S. automakers–trying to wring every last dollar out of yesterday's technology and yesterday's thinking. While Toyota was building the Prius, Ford and GM were hawking ever-bigger SUVs. While the world is going solar, we're denying global warming.

We are Rome, and the Vandals are at the gates.

JUST CURIOUS!!!……I'm wondering what type of energy his new mansion runs on!?

America should learn from its mistakes…
We are all paying the consequences of a wrong decision made in 2000 by electing Bush rather than this man…

We need to bring democrats back to give this man a larger role in the coming government. He is the right man for the coming decade

Obama/ Gore

YES!!!!!!

JG from MA-Obamabot is right. What happens in Wall-E is exactly where we are headed. Carbon emissions are terrible and "the miracle ethanol" is destroying all of our corn and food prices are going up, however Obama is not the right candidate, neither is McCain, not Barr, not Nader. I support McCain but he is wrong on several issues.

Dave, Illinois   July 17th, 2008 12:49 pm ET

CNN deletes most anti-Democrat and Obama comments to stack the deck. I posted 4 samples for each - 4 pro Obama and 4 pro McCain. I posted under different names. All 4 pro Obama posts made it. Only 2 McCain post made it. CNN, Obama election headquarters!

Gee, I wonder if this will make it????

dave g, Minneapolis   July 17th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

also a quote from the BBC:

"Right across northern China, coal seams burn in un-stoppable fires.

Some have been burning naturally for thousands of years, but others are being set alight by small-scale mining operations seeking to cash in on soaring coal prices. Together, these perpetual fires are letting off a total amount of carbon dioxide each year equal to all the cars in the USA. "

Bold is my emphasis…

Personal to Matt, NE:

Why yes, we wouldn't be in Iraq!

OPEC wouldn't have reacted the way they did and raised prices!

We wouldn't have had the chance to out a CIA operative and then lie about it!

You're a clear thinker, pal!!!

dave g, Minneapolis   July 17th, 2008 12:43 pm ET

So…why do the environmentalists keep fighting against nuclear power!? The father of the Gaia Hypothesis (that Earth is a living being) who started alot of the "Save the Planet" craze, endorses nuclear as one of the best, cleanest, safest ways of energy generation.

Solar is nice when it's sunny, wind is nice when it's windy, but there are no good technologies for energy storage. This is why nuclear and fossil are used–they are essentially compact energy storage.

It also does not matter much what the US does on this from a global warming perspective anymore. We could reduce our quality of life, consume less and watch while China continues to put one new coal-fired power plant online EVERY 7 DAYS!!!. how many new coal plants have we even added in the last 7 years!?

Bill from ALabama   July 17th, 2008 12:38 pm ET

Gore is absolutely right. This issue is paramount! Whoever our next President is,this issue needs to have top priority.

Bill, Streamwood, IL   July 17th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

An extremely good idea, but I don't believe the vast majority of today's Americans have the determination or are capable of making the sacrifices that achieving such a goal would require.

We are not our parents (who watched men go to the moon) or our grandparents (who helped win World War II).

We have lived too long under administrations who have instilled a "me first," "greed is good" and "it'll cost too much money" attitude in the populace.

I hope I am proven wrong, but I won't hold my breath.

The majority of Americans are willing to do with out or do with less but what about cooperate America?

Most of us when we leave a room we shut the light off. Most of us wash with cold water. I could go on and on BUT

How many times do you drive down the Interstate beside a city and see all of the high rise offices lit up like it was Christmas. Do they think the furniture is afraid of the dark? Yes, when someone is cleaning they need to see but can't they like me shut the light off after they are done in a room?

My 4-H group has been meeting in a building once every other month and we just learned that we can no longer meet there because the owner is not allowing any night meetings (light and heat) in order to conserve. I applaud this person even though it is going to be difficult for us to find another place that is as convenient as this one.

How much energy would that save? Think about it!!!!

Bob from The Show Me State   July 17th, 2008 12:31 pm ET

Now we have this MUSLIM that has plans to line his pockets with your dollars . Yet he is flipping an flopping around , an he will end up in GORES empty pool.
Tell me which one is going to BS the American people into there graves , first . Gore or the latest Flip Flopper ( Hussein )

I had some respect for Vice President Gore until he endorsed Obama. Now he makes me sick. I have been a loyal Democrat for 30 years. No more. Obama will do anything to inflate his already oversize ego. He is running on nothing but arrogance, out of control ambition and avarice.

Scott L   July 17th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

If he cared so much about his message then he would have invested his own money to make Inconvenient Truth and not given a dime to anyone else. Then plastered it all over the Internet for FREE!

However, it is a money making machine for him.

WHO THE HELL STILL BELIEVES GLOBAL WARMING IS A MYTH?

Go watch Wall-E right now. That is our future, as of right now. Drilling for more oil will only bring the costs down, encouraging us to use more, killing the environment more.

Go Gore! It's about someone with a brain woke up and told this country that the way to beat oil is to develop alternative energy — not drill new holes. Certain European countries are so far ahead of us in wind and solar power —we should follow their example. To heck with oil, Bush, the Saudis, and OPEC.

It would be incredible if we could do that within the next 10 years. Sadly, I don't think it will happen, considering no one in Washington really wants to take responsibility for the energy crisis and do something about it. All they do is place blame, and continue to drill, drill, drill.

Kinda like when Regan came in and took down Carters solar panels…too bad, think where we could have been as a nation by now.

Oil independence sounds good to me, but a few points
1) Whoever posted we could be off oil in 10 years if anyone cared is a fool - we can't possibly replace 200+ million gas powered cars in 10 years - how would workign people afford it?
2) Why doesn't Al ask his old buds in congress to get the hell out of the way? It's not republicans or oil companies blocking Cape Wind, now is it?
3) Why doesn't Al see that the hypocrisy of his own energy use leaves him with no credibility?
4) If the issue really is greenhouse gases, why no expansion of nuclear power which emits virtually zero so-called greenhouse gases?

Bob   July 17th, 2008 11:58 am ET

Matt are you institutionalized? If Gore had been our president this country would be much better off than we are today. The last 8 years has brought nothing but a costly, and endless war, high food prices, high oil prices, bank failures, mortgage crisis, loss of jobs, high unemployment, and the list goes on. Your president has driven America to the brink of destruction.

Ex-Republican for Obama   July 17th, 2008 11:57 am ET

Hey Gore, What are you doing yourself? Besides doing a huge killowatt consuming concert around the world and living in a huge mansion, what are you actually doing?
Do as you say and not as you do? Is that the message?

Stop talking and start inspiring with actions that 100% obide by your preachings.

Who the hell wants frigin windmills all over the place. I mean the the Kenedys kept them out of their view so why should I have to put up with it. By the way Al Gore is a blow hard

More PROPAGANDA from Al Gore, why am I NOT surprised????

Gore is making millions because of this propaganda. Herman Gobels would be proud.

How much of his movie the "Incovient Truth" was pure lies??

The icebergs falling into the ocean was the opening scene to the movie "The Day After Tomorrow". And that was 100% computer generated.

The scene of the poor polar bears on their small iceberg was actually a National Geographic shot from the mid 90's in which they computer altered the scene by REMOVING most of the the icebergs.

Why is it that the temperature the last 9 years yave been BELOW normal?????

And things are going to start cooling off even more in the near future, because the solar sun spot activity, which was UP in the mid 80's to late 90's has been in DECLINE since then. And it is expected to continue the DECLINE for several more years. It is a SOLAR CYCLE that comes and goes. This has been verified by NASA.

Gore is an idiot and he has dupped a lot of you people into believing him. Gore wants YOU to sacrifice while HE makes millions off of this and lives lilke the typical RICH democRAT that he is.

Mountaintop Destruction is wrong...Eastern KY   July 17th, 2008 11:44 am ET

I wish AL Gore would talk about the destruction that Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining is doing to Eastern Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia and parts of Tennessee.
The coal companies are saving $1.00 a ton by being allowed to destroy the mountain and dump the top in the valleys and streams. The hardly ever mine underground anymore because Mountaintop Removal is more "cost efficient". This is immoral.
The destruction is permanant and incredible. Go to Ohvec.org to see photos.
The few in the Democratic Party and hardly any in the Republican Party, other than Rep Chris Shays of Conn, do not care about this. As a resident of Eastern Kentucky, I am angered about all the talk of Alaska and offshore. While those areas are important, so is the Appalachian region of the US.
I know people who cannot bathe their children in the bathtubs because the well water is poisoned from the arsenic used to blow up the mountains. 10 times the amount of arsenic is used daily in Kentucky alone to blow up mountains than were used in the Oklahoma City bombing in the 90s.
If Kentucky was Alaska or California or Colorado this would not be allowed. Since this is a very pooor region, politicians do not care about the residents.
Please Al Gore speak up! Thank God Bobby Kennedy Jr does and we appreciate it.
Please encourage your represenative in Congress to support the Clean Water Act HB 2719 which is sponsored by Republican Chris Shays of Connecticut.

Why Europe is changing its environment policies and US is unable to do the same ?
- there are no low energy houses in US
- there are no solar panels on every roof
- there are still dinosaur cars on the roads
- people don´t think about the one time use of fossile energy.
- production in US is more energy intensive than in Europe
- thereis no public transportation system

And so US wonders why economy is going down ?

I have always liked Gore. Clean, environmentally supportive energy should have been part of the process years ago. Gore had my vote before and he would have it again if he was running this year. Energy should be the #1 topic in this election because of its huge long term implications. But sadly its not…..

The investors are lining up waiting for Congress to act. All we need is a President that is going to take a bold step. Unfortunately, McCain seems to have lost all his bold instincts as he has caved to the GOP machine. Obama is really the only hope for a new technology renaissance. New technology will bring good jobs back to the US and stop us sending all our money over to the Middle East either for oil or for wars. Obama is the smart choice for a prosperous future.

Google 'sewage produces electricity'. and 'farms use manure for electricity'
Here is a copy and paste from an Australian project.
"The Eastern Treatment Plant currently produces 12.2 GWh (gigawatt hour) of electrical energy from sewage each year. This is enough electricity to supply 2,000 households! The attached information sheet describes a new initiative, the Eastern Green Energy Project, and how the treatment plant effectively uses this energy source."
If the sewage was 'cooked' first, the resulting gas can generate the power for the treatment process, with an overage.
Organic garbage wastes are also a resource for energy.

Wind mills cost 2 - 3 million dollars.

That is more than some Oil rigs.

Solar power is not marketable and will have to be done individually, which means the majority of Americans will have to take out a second mortgage, but isn't there a mortgage crisis?

No one wants to talk about Nuclear.

Or apply the laws of Physics.

It takes energy to transfer energy from point A to point B, and during that, energy is lost.

why is this important?

because if wind and solar work in certain areas, west and north texas it would work but in south texas no, and Texas is the leading state in windmill energy. Solar works great in southern california, but what about Alaska during the winter months.

certain solar panels have certain cells that absorb specific spectrums of light.

Scientifically these are not viable.

and yes you need to drill to, you need nuclear, you could also subsidize certain solar panels and windmill energy in certain areas, but the alternative fules do not create employment.

KM:

I said it's impossible because it IS. We can't possibly build that much in that amount of time. It's NOT POSSIBLE.

Furthermore, attempting to do so would kill our economy. We would never even finish because of this. We'd get about halfway done and then collapse.

Also, power production is not our problem. Coal and natural gas plants do just fine, are cheap, and don't contribute much to pollution.

It makes much more sense to put more money into fusion research (which is far better than any other option out there, real or theoretical). Why waste trillions of dollars on windmills and solar panels when we'll have to turn around and spend just as much on fusion plants anyways?

The answer to our "energy crisis" does not involve power plants at all. It involves drilling for more oil, building a few new refineries, improving GASOLINE engine efficiency (because we still need them whether you like it or not), and improving hybrid technology and cost (they're still so expensive that gas cars are better economically!).

If you want to solve the energy problems and help the environment, that's fine. There's nothing wrong with that. However, you can't be an idiot about it. Think it through carefully and plan it well. It has to work logistically and economically, not just be an environmental fad.

Al is more than willing to bet the entire US economy on a scientific thesis that is not yet proven (albeit anyone who questions global warming is shouted down by the media).

Now if Al can get China, India, Pakistan, Tiawan, etc. on board, we should be able to reduce the 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions that human beings are responsible for (the other 95% are natural).

I would rather see Gore as the energy secretary - he could do much more there than as VP.

Billy J -Austin-Tx   July 17th, 2008 11:18 am ET

It's funny, the closer to home the statement is, the more bile spews out of the mouth of the folks who want to deny it and hope it goes away. I would bet that the same folks that are so outraged about Gore and rude here about him and the 'liberal' are the ones who say fat kids are responsible for their weight, not McDonalds. So how is it any different to say we are responsible for our own destinies when it comes to fuel, instead of cowtowing to the oil and coal industries? Not that I don't want them to uncap the wells here in Texas. I like money too, but I certainly don't see how that is a viable answer for more than 6 or 7 years, and even then gas won't be cheaper, we just won't get as much from Canada and Bush's godfamily the Saudis. I love the fact that some dimwit who is so hardheaded and mean he would sell his kids future out, just to be able to poke a finger in the eye of those darn 'liberals'.

It is very tempting to want to deny the reality of Global Climate Change, particularly with the past eight years led by a President who tries to deny this reality. But, the costs of developing new, renewable sources of energy will be nothing next to the continuing, rising costs of global warming. It is time to be adults, and deal with the reality of what is, rather than childishly clinging to the way things have been. Is it responsible to keep driving SUV's and holding onto other wasteful habits? Change is difficult, but that doesn't mean the eventual outcomes can't be very rewarding.

vjh   July 17th, 2008 11:10 am ET

I hope he starts with his own house and eases the jet plane rides. Set an example Gore, practice what you preach. Although you have been a leader in bringing attention to the global demise to the world you have done a very poor job of living a 'greener' standard.

aaron from minneapolis   July 17th, 2008 11:09 am ET

This is exactly why we have to vote for Obama. You can't trust McCain who wants to drill for more oil off our coasts. Our sealife is already being impacted by global warming and pollution. We can't afford to mess up our environments. Flat out we can't afford to not be nice to Mother Earth. We have to give more back then we take. Any species on this planet that has lasted for millions of years have given more back to the planet then they take. We're no different. Thank you Al Gore for fighting for this dire cause. We really must act now. Businesses are proven to perform better being environmentally cautious. McCain is full of it while Obama will deliver and for all you naysayers he has a planned laid out and with Gore helping WE the people of the United States can do it. WE CAN! Yes we can!!!

Also, according to most people here you have to Mother Therssea to say anything enviromentlly freindly. I just gald that at least someone with influance is saying something, and not just jumping on the drill our way out bandwagon.

I'm a Republican in Colorado, I'm voting for McCain in November, but if this guy were running for president, he would have my vote in a heart beat. This world is in the most unstable condition in recent history, and we have ourselves to blame. We have to start taking large and quick steps to fix these problems, and we need someone like Al Gore to help us get there. I sure hope that whoever wins in November, they listen to, and act on Gore's advice! God bless you sir!

I'm tired of all you idiots who still think fossil fuels are the answer. The reason you think that is because people with a lot of power and a lot of money has brainwashed you. In fact, it's killing the planet and making Bush and Haliburton rich. Thanks for nothing.

viking1   July 17th, 2008 10:54 am ET

As someone who actually HAS produced all his own electricity for the last 14 years (95% solar & wind, 10% Lp backup gen), let me say that first Mr Gore should stop being a fraud and running up 5 figure monthly utility bills at his mansion before he shoots off his mouth anymore. And please, dont give me the phony "carbon credit" argument. That is analogous to hiring another man to stay faithful to your wife (so that you dont have to). Just as well, Ted Kennedy should work to approve the wind farm far off the coast of Nantucket, rather than pull out all the stops to kill it. And Barbara Streisand shouldn't have a huge mansion right on the California coastline, all the while whining like a mule over coastal developmnent. No one who has an ounce of integrity or common sense could ever take liberals seriously on this issue until such hypocrisy ceases.

Not Caring   July 17th, 2008 10:53 am ET

Whether Obama and McCain are "way ahead" re environmentalism remains to be seen.

But Gore is in NO position to be judging anyone else's environmental efforts. This guy's mansion, even after all the expensive retrofits, sucks WAY more energy than the average American home. Plus, President Bush's home in Texas is WAY more environmentally friendly.

Anonymous   July 17th, 2008 10:51 am ET

It's the right attitude, but is it possible?

carolflowery   July 17th, 2008 10:50 am ET

you sir, have already gotten all the rewards you deserve, or didnt deserve, get on with your self-absorbed self

Mike, Syracuse NY   July 17th, 2008 10:50 am ET

If solar and wind could produce power at the same or less cost than oil, coal, and nuclear, we'd be using them more now. The technology isn't that efficient yet. What probably could be done in 10 years is to develop the technology to make it cost comparable. Then we would need another decade or two to convert over.

Unshrub   July 17th, 2008 10:50 am ET

It is interesting how most of those who oppose Al Gore attack him personally and not his ideas. Why is that? There is an old saying, "Wise men talk about ideas, fools talk about people." I guess some of you have proven this to be correct once again.

Sacto Joe   July 17th, 2008 10:50 am ET

I think the idea is good, but the goal is way over-optimistic. I do think, however, a goal of 25% renewables is attainable in ten years.

My wife and I are ready to put solar cells up, if the government helps get the cost down to a reasonable level. I suspect we're not alone.

Linda   July 17th, 2008 10:49 am ET

If Bush and the Supreme Court hadn't stolen the election from Gore, can you imagine how this country would be? We wouldn;t be In Iraq, gas would not be over $4.00, the economey would be OK. It breaks my heart every time I see Gore and makes me want to be an ex-Pat every time I see Bush. And since I think Obama is a Republican dressing up like a Democrat, I have little hope for our future.

Frank   July 17th, 2008 10:45 am ET

Why is Gore looking like the over indulding Jabba the Hutt? It's because he is full of it. Alternative energy will take 20 years at least to get any effective savings. Oil is what we use people….see all the cars…how long will it take to change this transportation to an alternative energy? And the Democrats are crying that drilling for our own resources will take seven or more years…boo…hoo. They are full of political BS.

Chris, Denver CO   July 17th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Yes, it can be done. and a tariff on imported oil would be a good way to start funding it!

Democrats Choose One Voice   July 17th, 2008 10:40 am ET

These are important issues. Al Gore is very relevant spokesperson for global warming problems and American oil dependancy. To those that criticized him on this topic, what have you done that was any better?

Obamalism   July 17th, 2008 10:38 am ET

I hope you all read the news about the bipartisan groups in the house and senate that are meeting to come up with a real energy plan. One that involves increasing domestic supply AND a push for alternative fuels. Imagine that…

The kicker of the story is the groups include veteran congressman that are NOT in leadership positions. HAHA…In order for our congress to work, they had to boot out the leadership from both parties because they're beholden to private interests and not the people.

They flat our said that Pelosi, Reid and a couple of gop leaders were not invited!

rightytighty   July 17th, 2008 10:38 am ET

Obviously…, the Clintons have drove Al crazy.

Jayson   July 17th, 2008 10:35 am ET

How about a more ambitious personal goal for himself personally like reducing his carbon footprint and flying on commercial airliners. Then he can stop being a complete hypocrite when he tells the rest of us to change our own lifestyles while he continues to pollute away.

Rocky Michigan   July 17th, 2008 10:34 am ET

I'm pretty sure my carbon footprint along with my twenty closest friends doesn't come close to equaling this jokers footprint. Yet he insists on lecturing the rest of us. Listening to him actually makes me sick the only that bothers me more is all the people that agree with this moron!

anonymous   July 17th, 2008 10:31 am ET

Why don't all of the Gore fans check into his own way of living? His electric bill alone is higher than 100s of others! Nobel prize, hah! He is nothing more than a spokesperson! It is so hard to believe people this day and age are so easily led by the nose.

Evan   July 17th, 2008 10:31 am ET

not important: Gore donated his half of the Nobel Prize money to the Alliance for Climate Change (the other half of the money went to the UN as co-recipient of the prize). All (yes, ALL) profits from An Inconvenient Truth have been poured into his latest climate change campaign, called We. He isn't getting rich off of this. He puts his money where his mouth is.

Maggie Muggins From Selwyn   July 17th, 2008 10:31 am ET

Gore is right but depending on the next President and Congress is an elusive dream. Obama will likely move in this direction in a more conservative manner but McCain will absolutely not be allowed to move in that direction. The Republican machine would crush him if he tried and if he were inclined to do this then why would he have endorsed the invasion of Iraq cause in his own words this war was all about oil!

Obamalism   July 17th, 2008 10:30 am ET

What a fraud… he's single handedly made the nobel prize a joke. I bet 100-1 that Gore is invested heavily in green energy companies and will stand to make millions upon millions if his proposals ever get pushed through legislation.

Mark my words, this is not about the environment, this is a new business revolution.

Al Gore is one of the few politicans in this country left with honesty. He will help pave the way for a green future. Other than Hillary clinton, he'd make the best VP choice, as he has decades of experience in the both parts of congress, and the white house as VP. His 2 portfolios would be energy ad enviorment. Go Gore!!!

KM   July 17th, 2008 9:52 am ET

It kills me when people come out and say we can't do this or do that in 10 years, it's not possible, etc. Who says we can't do this within 10 years? Even if it takes 15 years, we would already be on the right path. Take Hybrid cars for instance, it was unheard of and unpopular a few years back but now everyone thinks it's a great idea and concept.

Sure solar and wind energy sources will be expensive at first but just like flat panel televisions, after the newness wears off, the prices will come down and eventually everyone will have one.

Engineer from CT   July 17th, 2008 9:50 am ET

Sounds great, but those other energies are so inefficient that you would need to spend more money than we have to construct the solar/wind farms, let alone maintain them. Fossil fuels are still the most efficient and cheapest way of producing energy and it wont go away in a mere 10 years.

I agree, we need to solve the energy crisis and help the environment, but this proposal is a bit far fetched. Maybe set a goal such as a significant reduction in coal/oil usage and pollution emissions.

Reality Check Richmond Virginia   July 17th, 2008 9:50 am ET

it probably won't happen(completely) in the next…….20 years, but we should be trying to get there as soon as posible, sprinting 24-7. Our addiction to oil will kill us if we don't.

Vote Democrat people if you want this country to turn around.

Enlightened Voter   July 17th, 2008 9:45 am ET

I agree with you on everything Gore except one thing - John mCwar could care less about the environment. The republicans never even wanted to admit there was a global warming issue and john's record of voting against environmental issues is disgraceful. Only during the election year does he act like he cares. Once he's elected we all know what will happen. But you can see now that he doesn't - for instance he wants to build 45 new nuclear plants with no plans for their waste. And he wants to drill off our coasts and to heck with the coastlines. He disgusts me!

Carole S   July 17th, 2008 9:44 am ET

Thanks Al Gore! We need to really address this issue in a serious way. Our country has lost far too many years because of ineptitude. We can become energy self-suffcient if we truly want to. It would help resolve many political issues as well as address environmental damage.

This nut is getting on my last nerve. So what if we get every ounce of electricity we need through solar panels and carbon fiber windmills? Which by the way require more energy to make than they produce in several years. How is that going to reduce our dependancy on foriegn oil? My Ford F-150 doesn't run on Kilowatts and I don't think your Suburban does either. Matter of fact, most Ford Focus cars don't and neither do the majority of Honda Civics. Problem solved? No, we make our own electricity through a thing called 'Coal' which is not imported. We are the Middle East of coal, which is where Killowatts come from people. Nut Job, no wonder he isn't president.

Mary   July 17th, 2008 9:40 am ET

Gore has it right.

If we don't invest in that route we will see gas prices continue to rise. I am sure it can easily rise to $6/gallon as it is in Canada …..or double as it is in Europe. Don't complain when it does because people such as Gore have been saying it for a while now.

Don't forget the pollution!
Don't forget we are spending a lot of money on oil and a lot is coming from countries that are not close allies.

VOTE at the BOOTH and ask yourself, who will try to do what Gore is stating? Hmmm, Gore may hold a spot in one of those two parties or at the very least have more influence!

Monica   July 17th, 2008 9:39 am ET

Why aren't we burning our garbage? They could convert coal burning plants. Gore is so concerned about CO2 in the air when the research shows the CO2 increase occurs after the temperature rise. Currently, the technology is there to do so.
It is our money, that entities will use to build, wind generators, and solar generators….Then charge the consumer a huge few to use it.

Gore has the right idea. This agenda would make America strong again!

Mike   July 17th, 2008 9:27 am ET

Wow he's a complete idiot. It's not even possible to build all of it within 10 years, and that's not even considering the economic disaster it would be.

not an obamabot, thank GOD   July 17th, 2008 9:24 am ET

I agree with you on this one Al, just dont tell me to downsize my life when you wont do the same. Anyways there isnt much room to downsize.

MD   July 17th, 2008 9:22 am ET

It would be incredible if we could do that within the next 10 years. Sadly, I don't think it will happen, considering no one in Washington really wants to take responsibility for the energy crisis and do something about it. All they do is place blame, and continue to drill, drill, drill.

Should've been the last president. Could've been the next president. I don't know what he was thinking by not running.

Angus McDugan   July 17th, 2008 9:19 am ET

This guy is a privateer and loves the spot light. If he is so great then why did he loose to the biggest looser.

Bob from Pittsburgh   July 17th, 2008 9:17 am ET

I would buy a wind mill, or solar panels in a second, however the price for the equipment is still too high for me to justify.
I am hopping the prices will come down; I would certainly put solar panels on my roof.

I hope McCain as well as Obama get this message, I think lots of Americans are in the same predicament.

Bob..
