Barack Obama's campaign says it raised more than twice as much as John McCain last month.
Barack Obama's campaign says it raised more than twice as much as John McCain last month.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Barack Obama's campaign raised $52 million last month, more than twice the amount of funds brought in by his rival, John McCain, according to campaign officials for the presumed Democratic presidential nominee.

Obama's campaign now has $72 million cash on hand, the term used to describe how much money they currently have to spend, campaign officials said Thursday.

The average donation to Obama in June was $68, the officials said, bringing the monthly total to more than twice the $22 million raised in May. Meanwhile, the Democratic National Committee reports it raised over $22 million in June - bringing the total cash-on-hand held by Obama and the DNC to $92 million.

At that time, the Illinois senator was still locked in a fierce primary battle with Sen. Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination, and Obama was spending more time campaigning for votes and delegates than simply fundraising.

With the conclusion of the primaries in early June and Clinton's suspension of her campaign just days later, Obama's campaign cash numbers had been expected to rise in June.

McCain's campaign raised $22 million in June, its best month yet. The campaign said that combined with the Republican National Committee, they have about $95 million cash on hand.

Earlier: McCain camp says GOP has $95 million

In a fundraising e-mail to supporters, Obama Campaign Manager David Plouffe acknowledged the deficit, saying that “McCain and the RNC together still have a huge cash advantage, and we need your help to close the gap.”

Obama has opted out of using public financing for his campaign, but McCain is accepting federal funds. That means at the conclusion of the political conventions in September, McCain will get about $85 million in public funds to spend on his campaign until Election Day, November 4th.

Obama will receive no federal money, but is free to raise and spend as much money as he can. If he continues to raise large amounts of money, he could have an advantage over McCain when it comes to campaign cash in the crucial months of September and October.

Money of course is not the only factor in the campaign, but it does pay for advertisements on television, radio, the Internet and in print, as well as fund expensive get-out-the-vote efforts in crucial battleground states across the country.

Presidential elections are such a colossal waste of money, but then again, so is the government. The same people who whine about not being able to keep their house or buy groceries are sending both clowns money every month.

With the Internet as prevalent and the media giving the candidates all sorts of free press, (Obama may sponsor NASCAR, McCain and Viagra or Czechoslovakia), you would think the campaigns wouldn't need to spend so much.

blogatlantic   July 17th, 2008 10:18 am ET

Raising funds is great, but implementing those funds to greatest effect is the Greatest. Can Obama manage his funds better than McCain? Can McCain call on the old school money bags to raise quick cash when it's needed? The candidate who will raise, implement and manage their funds better, will start establishing who will better manage the U.S. economy and could go all the way

Dr. T   July 17th, 2008 10:16 am ET

Cool,Obama is a man of Faith/Hope.Dropped Public/lobby financing b/4 he saw this light. Has to raise money 4 the DNC and hilary . Will shatter fund raising ceilings each month eclipsing $500million b/4 november. Mccain is no match for a born champion.

Government of the people, for the people, and by the people. No special interests.

World Angel   July 17th, 2008 10:15 am ET

One thing I can't understand is, if the ECONOMY is soooo bad, why can't all of the million of dollars that's being raised for the candidates campaign be used for that purpose.

The three Presidential candidates, Senator Clinton, Senator Obama, and Senator McCain, by the close of March had raised a combined total of over $500 Million to spend to get a job that pays $400 Thousand a year. If you add in the amounts raised by the candidates that have dropped out of the race, the total rises to over $800 Million raised. It's almost mind boggling to consider anyone spending that much money to get a job. It would be like you spending $50 to $80 Million to get a job that pays $40,000 per year. Or, spending $500,000 to promote a program or rally and only raising $400. Why would anyone spend that much money for a job? One word, POWER! Power is the only thing that is sought after, by some, more than they seek God, money or love.

Everything they're saying in their campaign speeches will never happen anyway, it's senseless to spend that kind of money for someone to LIE to you. WHY DO WE DO SUCH STUPID THINGS.

Rice   July 17th, 2008 10:14 am ET

Brilliant, and thank you to all the supporters-big and small. I have made many sacrifices to contribute to the campaign and will continue to do so. Polls and the MSM do not take into account all of who have not previously voted or contributed to a campaign. If all Barack supporters, previously not registered and or Republicans and Independents, were counted, the numbers in the polls and demonstration of his actual lead against Mcinsane would be more accurate. Let's keep giving in effort to make up for those Hillraisers who don't and won't support the next POTUS. Donate to the Victory fund and we can be sure that Billary does not get any of the dosh we send in. Let her Hillraisers pay her debt off with the money that they won't send to Barack. Between them and the Billary's millions already in the bank, I am sure she will be fine. I wish them luck and distance.

Jo Ann   July 17th, 2008 10:12 am ET

Thanks Obama for including the ordinary people and not looking down
your nose at the small donations. This sounds to me like his campagin is being run by the people for the people. Special interest groups can't hold anything over him like they can McCain. It's funny to me how what Obama said about the war and his plan to end it. McCain says it was due to his inexperience and look what Bush is doing now seems to me Obama had the right idea. If this had been done before may we would not have lost over 4000 lives.
Sending another donation today and will until he is elected President of USA.

Pudin   July 17th, 2008 10:11 am ET

Hmm, $52 million in a month, but what is he campaigning for? CHANGE. What kind of change, you ask? Why, I don't know! I will never support Obama and I think he is leading the young people of this country down the wrong path with his public speaking skills and his ONLY message. Those of you who support him need to ask yourself what he is going to do in the White House, what is he going to change. I can't seem to get a clear answer out of anyone, supporters or the media as to what specifically his campaign is all about. What in the world does his change mean?

Rob-   July 17th, 2008 10:10 am ET

AWSOME!!!! I'm donating money too. I truly believe Obama will be a great leader. I enjoy the polls showing the race close becaue it keeps us Obama supporters on our toes, it also lets me know I will definately have to show up and vote in order for us to win in Nov. . i have taken the pains to follow US presidentail elections since the time of Clinton vs Bob Dole till date. I read all comments posted here on cnn every day and watch situation room every nite. But what i cant seem to understand up till now is why some people keep saying the DNC handed the nomination to Obama and stuffs like that.

I was very disappointed with the DNC for even changing the rules in the middle of a contest. If it were to have been done in a country like Nigeria or Zimbabuwe, CNN would have made a lot of noise about it. Why didnt Hillary and her supporteds voice thier opposition before the IOWA elections but wait untill she has lost and the DNC bent bacwards to support her.

I wish Obama good luck in his campagin and look forward to his been elected as president. The world certainly need no other war monger

Obama is a socialist; If you want our country to no longer be the dominate force of the world where we have to ask evil dictators not to attack us. Than indeed vote for this stupid man who thinks the world is all rosey attitude. He will lead this country down the toliet. He has NO idea what it takes to lead a group of people, much less a counrty. He is WRONG his Ideas are WRONG. This country is a free country, but will not be with much HIGHER taxes, socialist health care. He is everything this counrty went to war for to gain our freedom. Wake up America.

JB,
Marx? come on – communism and socialism don't work! This is proven over and over on a worldwide basis. Oh sure, it sounds sweet on paper, but it punishes people for excelling and promotes mediocrity.

Capitalism and free markets work best; no one ever got a job from a poor person, and strong companies hire more people.

Anyway, thanks for helping confirm that Obama is a Socialist, or possibly a Communist.

All the money he's raised throughout the last year is amazing. It also shows how much the average American is giving to him in their own ($50 here, $25 there, etc.). I'd like to see what he does with any money remaining, which is highly unlikely. I would be disgusted if he funneled any of that money into anything other then the current credit and housing struggles that are hitting these same every day Americans so hard.

I am waiting for him to answer tough questions, I really dont think he has been challenged yet. I have all the respect in the world for both candidates for different reasons except for the flip flops by both. While McCain has his eastern Europe issues, Obama stated he has visited 57 states. They are about equal on gaffes as far as I can tell. I am waiting for debates, I was not real impressed with Obama against Hillary in the debates. It seems right now that his speech writers are doing a great job. Bottom line, the debates will be interesting.

you can say a lot of bad things about John McCain, God knows he has provided us with a lot of amo but the one thing that rings MOST true is......John McCain is a Republican!
his camp is already riddled with lobbyist, he has taken huge amounts of money from special interest groups and (like Bush) big oil, he has admitted he does not know a lot about a lot ( like Bush), John McCain believes the all in all Americans are better off than we were 8 years ago (like Bush), he has changed his position (like Bush) on several issues that he criticized Obama for coming up with in the first place...
i don't know if John McCain is a bad man or not ( the research i have done on him makes me believe so) but i will say that McCain gets VERY confuse very often

That's just one area you'll pay-
He talks about change-
The only change you will have is what's left in your pocket-
With the economy the way it is - to tax further will only put us deeper in the hole-
But you probably will not understand until you don't have a job and then need a program to help you paid for by people like me–

refine – make more complex, intricate, or richer; "refine a design or pattern"

refine – improve or perfect by pruning or polishing; "refine one's style of writing"

Get IT!
I like when he "refines" his positions, you know make them more precise and better so to get it right, unlike your President Bush who couldn't "refine" his positions because he was so stubborn and he was wrong for that, dead wrong. Now he is redefining his views following Obama's themes', he can't even get his own ideas.

Lets see $52 Million divided by $68, thats about 764,000 votes. Thats a good start. Now if we can just get him to commit to about $500 billion / year extra in education and alternative energy research, this country will see great times again like in the 50s consumer goods boom and the 90s tech boom.

I believe in Obama's campaign and his supporters believe that Obama believes in us and that he truly wants what is best for this great nation. That is what motivates me to donate every month.

Substance not Rhetoric   July 17th, 2008 9:48 am ET

Average donation Obama $68 from the american people; McCain $70,000 per lobbyist sponsored donors. Who do you want to buy your government the american people or corporate and lobbyist whose greed has gotten us into the state we are in now.

It is amazing to me how folks refuse to acknowledge the conditions of the country since being under republican control. How they can totally ignore how the administration has allowed corporate greed and Oil industry to ravage our natioin. Through deregulation and false wars. And listen to Bush and McCain and the republicans deny there was even a problem until it became unbearable. Then had the audicity to blame it on a recently installed dem congress.

Ok the surge worked but does that mean we forget the fact we shouldn't have went in the first place. Ok sure dems should let off shore drilling but does that means we overlooked how bush and cheney sold us out to his oil cronies.

America be real please. Stop letting the republicans tell you they are for you. They are for business and they expect booming business to take care of the american economy by creating more jobs and lesson prices of products. Well repugs business is booming however corporate greed is creating the jobs in other nations and not so concerned about selling america products here when the can sell them to 4 billion chinese

Consider thes contributions to his campaign to be priming the pump. We need Obama in the White House to get this country's priorities back in line. And we need him in the White House to continue inspiring the populous to begin working together again to make this country strong.

Jerry, Florida   July 17th, 2008 9:46 am ET

With all the millions of dollars he’s literally raking in, no wonder Senator Obama can afford to open campaign offices all over. He just opened one in the Tampa, Florida area. A state which he has said repeatedly he doesn’t need to win the November election. I guess the allure of the "big bucks" that Florida can generate caused him to "flip-flop", once again. Is this "Change" we can really believe in?

He has never supported Florida, and yet his supporters believe they will just be able to "steam roll" through the state. I got news for you. Not so fast!

Has anyone (media organizations, etc.) bothered to find out where the bulk of the funding is coming from? Are Senator Obama and his supporters “buying” the election?

Stay tuned...

Brian   July 17th, 2008 9:46 am ET

"Millions are being contributed to Obama's campaign while we have banks failing, floods destroying property, fire fighters fighting to extreme exhaustion in California and the worst drought in the panhandle of Oklahoma since the Dust Bowl. If these same contributors would respond to these problems the way they have to his campaign—what a "real CHANGE" they could make in the lives of so many Americans."

Tell that to people donating to the RNC and McCain. Or is that ok? What about McCain using TAX MONEY for his campaign. What about the money going to rebuild Iraq? We should use ALL that money, which is OURS to build our OWN country! That is why people are donating to Obama so we can reclaim OUR tax money and stop handing it over to the Iraqi's and Haliburton!

20 ready to vote!   July 17th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Maybe if McCain wasn't so worried about what comes out of Obama's mouth he could raise just as much, or close to the money Obama's camp has.

McCain waits for Obama to speak then he attacks. The only time someone really hears what he has to say is after Obama has voiced his stand on the topic.

Get your priorities straight Mr. McCain.

Till then, Obama will be the front-runner!

janis   July 17th, 2008 9:45 am ET

Doesn't anyone question why Obama opted out of using public financing for his campaign after saying numerous times that he would accept public financing. Before he started getting so much money he even signed a document stating he believed both candidates should campaign with public financing so they would have the same amount of money. Obama doesn't play fair even after he stressed how politics should change. By turning down public financing he can raise as much money as he can get without limits. If he had accepted the public financing he would have the same limit on money as McCain. Both candidates should be forced to accept public financing so the playing field would be fair and the campaign would not be won by whoever has the most money. Obama preaches change, but is practicing the same old political games. I have never voted republican, but this time I just might. Great speeches and charisma doesn't fool me.

J.S., your comment that "Millions are being contributed to Obama's campaign while we have banks failing, floods destroying property, fire fighters fighting to extreme exhaustion in California and the worst drought in the panhandle of Oklahoma since the Dust Bowl. If these same contributors would respond to these problems the way they have to his campaign..." is one of the most nonsensical anti-Obama rants that I've read. How can everyday Americans that contribute to Obama's campaign remotely overturn the failing banks and acts of God? Please enlighten me.

The total for McCain does not include all the other attack groups monies that are already being spent to attack Obama. The Obama campaign and DNC still really need our help. Faithful monthly contributions of an affordable amount you can give is needed. That is what I am doing. I can give up some of my frivolous spending and not doing fast food a couple of days a month is also a lot healthier for me.

J.S., that's a lovely thought, but unfortunately, it's extremely difficult to fix those problems from our position as bystanders. I think I speak for many others when I say that our supreme hope is that by donating money to BO, we'll finally put someone in the White House who will address those issues.

Remember, we still have a Republican controlled executive branch, with a Democratic controlled legistrative branch. That makes for gridlock, with the exception of the occasional override like we saw on the Medicare issue recently. The same problem will exist if McCain is elected. My hope is that when the same party controls both branches, they can start to fix what ails this country.

Obama was not my choice. However, he has my support. No one should feel that this election is Obama's to win. This will be a battle to the wire. Fortunately, his handlers seem to have a clear direction and a good plan to see him to the general. McCain needs to be shut down and sent out of the arena.

Why do you think people are giving Obama this kind of money?...........
They are doing it to CHANGE the policies that George Bush and his cloonies have totally mess up.

Now for the nature occurances, I think people will continue to help their fellow man in every way possible. Man cannot stop drought or dust bowls, but they can stop white collar crooks from taking advantage of the less fortunate.

dEMOBRAT   July 17th, 2008 9:37 am ET

Obama 60 year old-WF I believe the media was reporting that McCain still had more cash on hand, not that McCain had raised more money this month.

Zonker   July 17th, 2008 9:37 am ET

Banks are failing, people are having trouble making their mortgages, and still he is able to raise $52 million total from more than 750,000 donors. This should be as much a scathing indictment of the current administration's policies as it is an endorsment of America's best option for true leadership.

Matt M.   July 17th, 2008 9:37 am ET

J.S.,

I, as well as most of the other Obama supporters I know, DO contricute money to many other causes and charities. But we also contribute to Obama because we know that having the right President makes an enormous difference in such things as whether or not banks fail in the future, or whether disasters are adequately responded to.

It's ridiculous to criticize people for taking part in the political process and donating money to a presidential candidate. So in your honor, I'm gonna go ahead and donate another $50 each to Obama and the Red Cross.

to J.S.

I understand your point, but the fact is without legislation in place and an infrastructure to donate to these said causes, It is all just chaff in the wind. The law of the country and local government plus people donating time and financial support together is the only way to combat the challenges that this nation and this world face. I appreciate your resolve to point out the problems that we are facing, but it is a new direction from our leaders and law makers that will help spur real change. You can not just throw money at problems, you have to have a plan of action as well. I hope that Obama gets in as well as a larger Democratic Majority gets in so we can start moving on some of these issues.

Kindest regards,
Blake

This is very, very misguided.

Unless he gets into power, he can only throw money at these causes. If he throws all that money at getting into power, he can change the root of the causes–legislation–and be even more effective than simply providing a charity donation.

Thank you for abandoning your promise to take public financing. It's nice to see this man say and do anything to get elected. I have been watching the discussion on CNN about the colour of Senator Obama's skin and the potential influence it may have on voters. So, in summary, we have two candidates. One is Harvard educated, a brilliant orator, presidential in dress and stature and a man who has an incredible ability to think on his feet. On the other hand, we have a candidate who cannot complete a speech without a teleprompter, which means he doesn't think well if someone else is writing his speeches, he is caricature in delivery, he appears to not know the differences between Sunnis and Shiites, he confuses Iran and Iraq and he still thinks Czecoslovakia is a country. He acknowledges not knowing anything about economics and he wants to stay in Iraq for the next 100 years. However, he does appear to have one overriding strength he is white!. So when you are sitting in your home, waiting for it to be foreclosed, and when you children are being killed in a war that has nothing to do with you and when you cannot take your child to the dentist because you don't have the money, and when your economy is in recession and your children are hungry, etc,, please feel secure in the knowledge that at least your candidate is white!!! In the face of a superior candidate, it is astounding that he may not win because his skin is black. If that isn't the ultimate stupidity I dont know what is.

John Starnes Tampa Florida   July 17th, 2008 9:32 am ET

McCain is learning the hard way that Americans are realizing anew that the Republican Party has long been soley about government of, by, and for the wealthy. Astonishing that McCain, who after an affair while married, would marry into vast wealth and end up with EIGHT homes, would refer to Barack Obama as elitist! His near-daily major gaffes, plus missing 61.8% of the votes of the 110th Congress, make clear he is unfit to end up in the White House continuing Bush's tragically flawed and failed policies that have wounded America to the core on every level.

Darius   July 17th, 2008 9:32 am ET

The amount of money spent by all the candidates running for President is obscene considering the overall economy. At the time of gas at an all time high, we have presidential candidates spending millions to be elected, and I find the amount Obama has raised especially distasteful after he promised to use public financing! Money is totally trying to buy this election for Obama - the least experienced of all the candidates.

Who is being raked? As a Hillary Democrat, I supported Hillary as the First Woman President of the United States of America because of her experience, record of accomplishments, and trust of the American people. Sadly, Hillary was rolled by the party leaders, the super delegates, and the arrogant annointed one of the party. We now look with hope to John McCain to bring peace, prosperity, and security to our Nation. John is like Teddy Roosevelt who about 100 years ago as President spoke softly but carried a big stick. John will bring Osama to justice. Contrariwise, Jessie wants to cut the democratic nominee's stick off.

His site accepts very small amounts of donations...skip that cup of coffee for a day or two and send that money to Obama. If you like your pocket pain, stick with McCain. If you want improvements and would like to see your money pay for more tomorrow than it does today, Barack the vote! Make an investment today in your future for tomorrow.

I just visited a site today and it gave me the chills. It was a site for Clinton Dems...I thought Dems were for all Dems and didn't belong to one person. I started the campaign process not knowing who to support between Clinton and Obama. Clinton because she is a woman and name recognition. Obama because he was an intelligent black man. As they moved up in ranks and others dropped out of the race, I began to follow their policies and their ability to persuade me as a voter. I persuaded most by Obama and became a supporter, not against Hillary, but for Obama. Many of my friends wanted Hillary because of Bill and some didn't want Hillary because of Bill. But I never thought it should be against another Democrat...as a Democrat. I watched as Obama decided not to fight against the kitchen sink tactics only to be labeled as weak and unfit, even though they were both similar and as close as you can get on policies...besides the mandate on healthcare. It became a personality contest and many say it bought the worst out of both Obama and Clinton. I think it bought the worst out of Democrats...so when I see a site that is created by Democrats to bring down another Democrat because he wasn't their choice over Clinton...I feel such shame as a woman to think that other women...and it is mostly women...would use reverse sexism against a man who wanted to win just as much as Hillary and who earned his win.

Obama may not be your first choice, but he is a good choice for Democrats over John McCain. Please find it in your hearts to donate to the candidate who is set to make history!

Obama '08...the only choice for me

Mike   July 17th, 2008 9:17 am ET

Obama: $52million with an average of $68 per donation.
McCain: $22million with an avareage of $863 per donation.

I think you can tell who is funding who.

Obama is the people's leader, and McCain... well he is hardly a leader, lets just call him a surrogate for special interests and lobbyists..

Richard Ruati   July 17th, 2008 9:17 am ET

FS   July 17th, 2008 9:16 am ET

Ahh and the saga continues, the critics can quiet down now...they thought Obama was losing support...ha ha ha.

Take that Repub's and Hillraisers.

All the real Hillary supporters stand up, don't follow these crazy mad rich donors called Hillraisers, they are lobbyist who can't take the fact that they wont' have a puppet to control.

Join with us and fund a campaign you will feel part of, where your $5.00 is appreciated, Obama funded by America.

mollygonz   July 17th, 2008 9:15 am ET

Wow, i guess that shuts the Washington Post up!

CD   July 17th, 2008 9:15 am ET

The GOP haven't seen anything yet. The Obama cash machine of Americans being the greatest lobbying force is ready to take on the crazy lobby people who think they own our government. I know a lot of people who are yet to donate to Obama because of the fear that the money will be sent to Hillary and Mark Penn. By the end of this month we will wipe out the deficit our campaign has against the GOP. From August it will be a whole new ball game because we will make sure we raise at least $85m dollars each month till November.

Let the games begin!

IQ   July 17th, 2008 9:15 am ET

GOOD NUMBERS....NEXT WEEK I'LL SEND ANOTHER $50.00.

OBAMA........08

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   July 17th, 2008 9:13 am ET

If Obama continues to raise this much money, he could continue to spend where and how he chooses without having to worry much. It seems that if this continues, McCain will have to worry about some states that were once considered safe. Obama, from reports that I have read, seems to have a better organization set up than McCain. That organization can get people out to vote. That is the critical thing for Obama. Typical young people which Obama has energized don't usually go out and vote; if that does happen, the rules have changed.

Ian   July 17th, 2008 9:12 am ET

If the "system" isn't corrupt, then why would anyone spend hundreds of millions of dollars on a campaign for a job that only pays a few hundred thousand dollars a year?

Nick - Arlington, VA   July 17th, 2008 9:12 am ET

$52 million and the average donations was 68 bucks!! I'd like to know what the average donation to McCain was...

Haha...playing it coy!

MMN-Milwaukee WI   July 17th, 2008 9:02 am ET

Thank-you Obama, change is here already. You have gone and reminded us that we do own a stake in the electoral process and it’s not the special interest groups and corporations that should decided for us how the country should be run. The ground up change is truly in effect and no one can take that away from us again unless we let them do so. I am ready for more change and I am not afraid. FDR told us "we have nothing to fear but fear itself" and those were not just words he inspired many.

Xavier   July 17th, 2008 9:02 am ET

Obama 52 million. McCain 22 mllion. It wont be long before Obama eclipses McCains available funds. What do Obama detractors have to say now?

If anyone has ever read Marx, the Proletariat are rising. No more tax cuts for the rich. No more CEO's making 400 times the average worker (in Japan a CEO makes 10 times the average worker). Trickle down doesn't work. The divide between the haves and have nots has gotten bigger every year, and we are done with it.

That is why McCain will lose.

Jack up the taxes on the wealthy, they are generally the ones who have gotten us into this mess in the first place. Let their tax dollars get us out! And give the average worker a break.

JB   July 17th, 2008 8:58 am ET

Wonderful. I knew that Sen. Obama raised more than 30 million dollars. The numbers are going to get larger and larger each month until CNN finally realizes that people want Obama not McBush or McSame

Tampa resident   July 17th, 2008 8:56 am ET

Dave, Illinois   July 17th, 2008 8:51 am ET

"The Audacity of Buying an Election" by Barrack Obama. The sad part of all this is that there are so many gullable people persuaded by pretty words from this empty suit.

Cynthia   July 17th, 2008 8:50 am ET

I'm glad he is raising large amounts because he is going to need it to fight all of the negative things that th RNC and their surrogates will put out there against him.

atypical   July 17th, 2008 8:50 am ET

We've got your back Obama. We'll make sure to do our part in this election to ensure you won't regret not accepting public financing.

Just sent in 25.00 this week. More to come later. Promise.

I know money is tight for a lot of us, but if we all keep doing a little we'll accomplish a lot!

Let's take Obama to the White House.

Peace.

MSM ... wipe that egg of your face. i supposeyou will spin this one too for your best friend, st. john mccain. are his ribs really that good?

Bulldog   July 17th, 2008 8:47 am ET

All of this talk about McCain being just like George Bush is absurd. McCain is at least 50% like Dick Cheney. McCain was calling for war in Iraq in 1998 before 9/11. Why isn't his being reported more? This shows the real John McCain, the WAR MONGER.

CT voter   July 17th, 2008 8:46 am ET

I'll be sending in more now, thanks for the heads up. It's ironic Obama has been saying Afgahn should be the main focus from the start and only now Bush and Mccain are picking up on it month's later after it's gotten MUCH worse...the idiots...

Obama 08

Please don't send another moron into the white house America, let Mccain retire.

Election Watcher   July 17th, 2008 8:45 am ET

Another promise which Obama turns his back on to the tune of $300M and counting. Oh, no wait, sorry. He didn't break a promise, he simply "refined his position". Imagine how he'd be if elected.
Just say Noabama!

Marty, FL   July 17th, 2008 8:45 am ET

Great news! Go Obama '08!

I will be making another donation tomorrow, as well as one to Hillary. It is time to take our country back.

Yvonne   July 17th, 2008 8:45 am ET

I know this just drives the Obama haters crazy. All that talk about how his fundraising was crashing and how FISA had sunk him was just wishful Republican thinking.

FEDUP   July 17th, 2008 8:44 am ET

The economy is in a "mental recession". If people can contribute so much money to candidates, we should not worry about the high price of fuel after all. Unless these contributions are from the big boys. The Bernie Mac, $2,300.00 a plate fund raiser, couldn't hurt. I find it hard to believe this money is from all the little people. I'd be willing to bet the charities are really hurting for cash. What a waste...all for the power we put in one persons' hand.

Mike Dallas   July 17th, 2008 8:44 am ET

Glad I could help! I have set the campaign up for a bi-weekly recurring payment from now thru November!

Chad, Wisco   July 17th, 2008 8:43 am ET

How about both canidates "donate" their money to the country and get back to doing their jobs and we'll elect the one we best determine based on what they do. It would save us a ton of time and money.

Danny in Ohio   July 17th, 2008 8:42 am ET

Donated another $25 just now! That's a total of $100 since the beginging of the year. That's all I'm able to afford for politics. I still don't have a ton of faith. I'm under the impression that these guys are only telling us what we want to hear and when they take office, nothing changes. But, my faith/hope is still here... only.. it's worth $100. That's about what I spend on gas every 2 weeks!

Dr.Mimi De La Cruz   July 17th, 2008 8:42 am ET

good job people. I donate to Sen Obama as much as i can, but it isn't a lot. it's the thought that counts though.

Dems, we have to defeat the Repugs in Nov, so i troops will have someone who really looks out for their interest. Sen Obama is a leader that they can be proud of...much better than the baffoons that currently leads our country.

Obama WILL have well over the 95 million that McCain is getting from RNC and donations. Obama's camp will not take donations from any special interest groups. That shows me the strength of his campaign and the strength of the American people and their willingness for change.

Obama '08

James From Chicago   July 17th, 2008 8:31 am ET

I have a question, maybe someone has the answer??

He is raising so much money, why is he only ahead by 6 points.???

I am waiting for the debate when Obama's speech writers aren't
by his side to tell him what to say. Remember the debates between
him and Clinton?? He stuttered and stammered like an idiot.

Bulldog   July 17th, 2008 8:31 am ET

This shows how much support is out there for Obama. While the poll numbers may show a different story it is clear the Obama supporters are much more engaged and put there money where there mouths are. Republicans seem to rather throw out lies than donate money to their canidate.

Patty   July 17th, 2008 8:31 am ET

When people in this country are hurting and having a difficult time, I find it disgusting that this amount of money is being spent on campaigns. I sure hope we get our money's worth in the end but doubt it.

Hillary VP

Wolf Dermann   July 17th, 2008 8:25 am ET

Obama might be outraising the McCain on the official numbers, but McCain is able to keep up with Obama with his "McCain Victory 08" fund, through which he accepts up to $70,000 per individual donor with most of the money going to the RNC that will spend it for McCain. So much for fair campaign financing.

Joe Reed   July 17th, 2008 8:25 am ET

Bye bye McCain, Hello President Barack Obama!

What the hell is the DNC doing? Obama has to raise all the money while they sit on the hands. On the other hand, the RNC is raising all of McCain's money. I'm glad Obama opted out of the public finance system or he would have been at a serious disadvantage.

Obama 08: 60 year old white female   July 17th, 2008 8:20 am ET

Millions are being contributed to Obama's campaign while we have banks failing, floods destroying property, fire fighters fighting to extreme exhaustion in California and the worst drought in the panhandle of Oklahoma since the Dust Bowl. If these same contributors would respond to these problems the way they have to his campaign-what a "real CHANGE" they could make in the lives of so many Americans.

I will continue donating to his campaign. We need this man as President. Everything he has been saying has been true: The US is now negotiating with Iran, Afganistan is being ignored, Iraq was never a threat to us. We need someone with judgement and foresight to lead this country. We need someone like Barak Obama.
