McCain: Not taking Nebraska for granted

McCain says he will have to compete in Nebraska.
McCain says he will have to compete in Nebraska.

OMAHA, Nebraska (CNN) - John McCain has made a recent habit of telling audiences at his fundraisers that he is “the underdog in this race.”

But is he so far behind Barack Obama that he’ll spend serious time and money competing in …Nebraska?

"We are the underdog," McCain said at a finance event in Ashland, Nebraska Wednesday night. "We are not taking the state of Nebraska for granted. I’m going to campaign here and compete here and I need your help. We need to organize. We need to get out the vote. We’ve got a headwind because our economy’s tough.”

According to the CNN Electoral Map, Nebraska is solidly red, a “safe” state for McCain. The state hasn’t voted for a Democrat in a presidential election since the Lyndon Johnson landslide of 1964.

It’s one of two states, along with Maine, that splits its electoral votes according to congressional districts – one vote for each of the state’s three congressional districts, with two more votes allocated to the state winner.

Didn't realize that this was the comment section to post the lamest Czechoslovakia jokes of all time. Can we now make fun of a candidate who has never taken a principled stand in his entire political career? Unfortunately O can't call a focus group to decide how to immediately react in a national or international crisis and he can't simply vote 'present' either like he did over 130 times in the Illinois State Senate.

As a Dem in NE who has never had their vote mean anything – I would LOVE to see Obama take Nebraska. Kerry won Lancaster County (Lincoln) in 2004.....doesn't mean much, but there's hope – Obama is swaying over so many, I would not be surprised if he took the eastern side of the state that has the population – may not materialize into electoral votes, but I think it'd be a wake up call to the GOP. Rural NE will always be red.

I love that Obama isn't conceding anything – he's showing that your vote matters to him even if you're in a "red" state.

I had the priveledge of seeing Obama when he came to Omaha prior to the Nebraska caucus.

McCain was the under-funded underdog in the primaries too, and he came out on top. Rasmussen polls today show Obama at 44% and McCain at 42%.....statistically, they are tied. In other words, Obama has an underwhelming lead.

Obama will find out that money (and he has tons of it) won't be able to buy him the presidency. The American people are not stupid enough to be bought.

Was for Hillary.....now McCain all the way!

    Dave, Illinois

Take it from another Dave in Illinois when I say don't consider the attitude of internet posters in basing your opinion of a candidate. We have seen plenty of nonsense from all sides during the course of this campaign. The type of nonsense that would discourage a person like yourself from voting at all. Please consider the candidates' stance on issues and not your impressions of this board.

What a remarkably FUBAR campaign! He will win Nebraska, so he needs to be spending time elsewhere–not hiding in the corn fields. So far, his campaign has been remarkably inept, almost a giveaway to Obama. I suspect that he'll find it increasingly difficult to gather money and volunteers if he doesn't shake up his organization. Shape up and fly right, senator!

Why this election if even close is beyond comprehension. McCain is an American patriot who has served his country for fifty years. He has worked with democrats on serious national issues his entire political life. The base of his own party has nothing but disdain for his bipartisan efforts.

Now lets look at Obama. The man has never worked with anyone not a democrat. He has voted with his liberal base over 95% of the time. He has not sponsored one piece of serious legislation. In fact, he had only worked in the United States Senate a little more than 140 days when he began running for President. The man is a speech. In fact nobody would even know him if it wasn't for his speeches. His entire candidacy is a joke.

At least he's got the state name right. His comment about Czeckoslavakia was bogus–it's the Czeck Republic and Slovakia–guess his experience is not too helpful.
