Obama is making frequent trips to the gym

CHICAGO (AP) — Sometimes it's hard to tell if Barack Obama is running for president of the United States or Mr. Universe.

The Democratic presidential contender exercises regularly, but over a 24-hour span this week, he took it to a new extreme.

Twice on Wednesday and again Thursday morning, Obama traveled to a lakefront apartment building near his Chicago home to work out with a friend at his gym. On Wednesday night, Obama also spent an hour at the East Bank Club, a mammoth exercise facility just north of the city's famous business Loop where he is known to play basketball.

On the former occasions, reporters accompanying Obama saw him get in and out of an SUV wearing a baseball hat, white T-shirt and black sweat pants. On the visit to the East Bank Club, Obama was dressed casually as if going out to dinner, wearing slacks, a blue blazer and flip-flops.

A distinct lack of visible sweat on the Illinois senator triggered questions about whether he was actually exercising or using the gym visits as cover for conducting vice presidential vetting or interviews.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton e-mailed a succinct, two-word answer: "Working out."

That view held credence among some of the photographers who regularly accompany Obama. They said that even when he shot hoops earlier this year with members of the University of North Carolina varsity men's basketball team, they didn't see Obama sweat.

Ok, this is honestly too much. I think the one thing that Hillary did to really damage Obama more than anything is to constantly claim he wasn't getting enough media attention. To combat this claim, it seems the media has turned in to the paparazzi and covers his ever sneeze as newsworthy. I mean really, the gym?! And to make it seem like news you claim it could be a place where they're questioning vp's? You've truly lost it now. I'm as big a fan of Obama as any but this is really an annoying story to have to look at.

STILL FOR HILL July 17th, 2008 10:50 am ET

This is funny…. The messiah doesn't even sweat.

Roland M. or Donna B., are you writing stories for the ticker this morning?

I'm Still for Hill and will be until I vote for John McCain in Nov.

Why the reference to Roland M or Donna B? Is it because they are Black.? You sound like Hillary's loss has left you in a great deal of personal misery and pain. You must be fun to be around. After you vote for McSame in November I can only imagine how much pain you are going to be in when he loses.

what?   July 17th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

wonder what country club McCain works out in….McCain working out…LOL

RT   July 17th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

Wow… CNN really giving us the hard news…. Maybe Obama is an alien, because we all know alien's don't sweat. If you remember from the last Indiana Jones movie those alien's didn't sweat, so if Obama doesn't sweat then he has to be an alien! Agreed? Yes? Okay kids it's nap time.

Billiam the Kid   July 17th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

Lol. Wow I hear alot of vitriol towards Obama on here. I do agree this isn't news. But for the people on here attacking Obama, you guys are guilty of the same BS you all accuse the press of on this very blog.

Sure this isn't REAL news, but when was the last time the public or the media has been this interested in a candidate?

Karen   July 17th, 2008 12:16 pm ET

It's so strange that all you Obama supporters don't seem to emulate your chosen candidate. He appears calm, polite, and open to new ideas. You personally attack people who don't share your view; you name-call; condescend, and the list goes on. (And by the way, you are some of the worse spellers I have ever seen).

For instance, your behavior towards DianeD, especially Fillibuddy… "Diane keep dreaming. Tomorrow it will be 800 sd's. And its spelt 'rumour' !" (I believe you need a dictionary Fillibuddy).

3:Your constant Obama Bashing is childish but amusing!
4:Yeah he is Arrogant ,sorry that he doesn't shuck and jive and
mention watermelon and chicken when ever given the chance.LOL
5:If you can't stand the fact that he might just be the next Commander

you want but please just stop whining!

Obama will be the best president America has had, to date. Brains and valid values always make a difference in how well an individual can do their tasks, for their entire life. One who can always try to do their best, and who can improve their errors, is what a country needs for a leader.

OBAMA in '08 and '12

Ali   July 17th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

I totally agree. Working out is totally irrelevant in today's society. A public figure setting a positive example by practicing a healthy lifestyle is completely inappropriate.

Of course if our nations epidemically overweight youth followed that example and worked out there could be serious consequences. They might have fewer instances of weight related illnesses. The nation’s health care system might be less strained. What a horrible ideas.

This is also might indicate that Obama is not as out of touch with the average person. We wouldn't want to give anyone the idea he is a normal guy that we could actually relate to. That would go against everything we hold dear.

JOE THE TROLL:

I totally agree. The problem is Obama is being treated with celebrity status, and therefore NONE of the McCain gaffe's are covered as TOP news. McCain is getting a free ride because the press doesn't go all LOCKJAW on his and his surogates mis-steps and play them ad-nauseum…and then on the other side we get all the little day to day idiotic stuff about Obama.

Do you think we'll get to the real issues in September?

john, MI   July 17th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

You've got to look deeper than the story - Obama's latest weakness is that he is somewhat of an eliteist and has a problem relating to the "normal people."

So his campaign managers put together a story about how he works out - just like a normal guy. And CNN picks it up and runs it.

Remember the Obama family interview last week? It was designed to do the same thing - make him more relatable to the average American.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong - its just good politics - but be smart enough to recognize it for what it is!

Lisa 4 Obama   July 17th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Until Hillary supporters, PUMA and Hillraisers pay off Hillary's debt they have no right to demand Hillary as VP or call Obama our nominee names or that he stole it. This same process for nomination was used for Al-Gore and John Kerry and no cried wolf! Now Obama has won it the very biased wicked females want to blame Obama for the media and whatever. Get lost losers! Now we know why the good old white men always wanted to keep you away from such power because you can get irrational. Thank goodness these PUMA females are moving to republicans because the republicans have the right antidote to your poison; Stay in the Kitchen and iron the clothes of the republicans while they take away your rights!

But we welcome the cool headed and rational true democratic women supporters.

Hillary got screwed`   July 17th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Finally, people are realizing that Obama is not the strongest candidate against McCain. If you can’t out perform a candidate who has suspended her campaign and called for the Party to unite behind you, you simply can’t perform.

Apparently, the superdelegates are catching on as well. Alegre is reporting that 8 superdelegates who had declared for Senator Obama are now expressing that, given the chance, they will vote for Hillary at the Convention. Alegre got the word directly from our beloved PUMA spokesperson, Will Bower:

“A large phone banking effort to the super d’s combined with Obama’s flips and poor presumptive nominee performance, etc have yielded doubts within the super delegates, enough that 3 elected and 5 DNC members have confided that should they have the opportunity to do so, they will vote for Hillary.” [emphasis added]

This isn’t nearly over.

Which explains why Obama, Brazile, Dean and others are trying to keep Hillary off the ballot at the Convention. Hillary Rodham Clinton is clearly the strongest candidate. She finished the primary season with the momentum, winning the popular vote and the overwhelming majority of states post March 4th, even South Dakota which was projected as a win for Obama, after Obama had been declared inevitable and the deafening cries for Hillary to leave the race had reached fever pitch.

Exercising is a great habit, and we all know that the most successful people exercise atleast 30 minutes a day. (proven study)

I don't understand those who are criticizing this habit. Working out=discipline. How can you lead a country if you are not healthy yourself, but always going to the hospital because of heart attacks and obesity?

Personally, I'd be nervous to elect an old and unhealthy president who would spend half his time getting check-ups and surgery.

Also, those of you who are criticizing Obama on exercising should get your lazy butts to the gym instead of contributing to US's 60% obesity statistic.

He IS qualified!   July 17th, 2008 11:59 am ET

I sick and tired of the closet 'racists' saying Obama is not qualfied to be president because he lacks "experience". Then they point to old man McCain years in the Senate. NEWSFLASH: John McCain is OLD, his views of the world are OLD, his mind is OLD; his solutions are OLD and PROVEN WRONG.

Barack Obama is intelligent, young spritely, agile and up to date. more than anything else, he has demonstrated the "judgement" that the supposedly wise people with experience have lacked. What he point of having experience if it will lead you are going to make tthe WRONG decisione everytime.

America put aside your racist tendencies and do the Patriotic thing!

Obamarama   July 17th, 2008 11:59 am ET

Shame on you CNN for reporting nonsensical tickers like this one and negating the substantive information such as how Bush and McCain are now following Obama's suggestion of diplomacy with Iran or how McCain stole his idea of sending brigades to Afghanistan or McCain's constant flip-flopping on any number of issues. Has McCain got something on you guys?

OBAMA IS MENTALLY HANDICAPPED. He does NOT have any Original ideas. There was very little difference between Hillary and Obama because he STOLED HILLARY'S POSITIONS ON ISSUES. Early in the debates he had different views then he changed. Hillary had always said that Afganastan needed more troops and it was more dangerous than Iraq. NOW that is Obama's view.

The ONLY CHANGE OBAMA IS GOING TO ACCOMPLISH IS CHANGING HIS VIEWS TO MATCH what's MOST POPULAR. and Close to his opponents. Then he says that he always said that - LIAR

CNN is doing a great job reporting on this looser.

He has been flip flopping a lot lately and I guess he has literally been getting this training at the gym.

• After vowing to eschew private fundraising and take public financing, he has now refused public money.
• Once he threatened to filibuster a bill to protect telephone companies from liability for their cooperation with national security wiretaps; now he has voted for the legislation.
• Turning his back on a lifetime of support for gun control, he now recognizes a Second Amendment right to bear arms in the wake of the Supreme Court decision.
• Formerly, he told the Israeli lobby that he favored an undivided Jerusalem. Now he says he didn’t mean it.
• From a 100 percent pro-choice position, he now has migrated to expressing doubts about allowing partial-birth abortions.
• For the first time, he now speaks highly of using church-based institutions to deliver public services to the poor.
• Having based his entire campaign on withdrawal from Iraq, he now pledges to consult with the military first.
• During the primary, he backed merit pay for teachers — but before the union a few weeks ago, he opposed it.
• After specifically saying in the primaries that he disagreed with Sen. Hillary Clinton’s proposal to impose Social Security taxes on income over $200,000 and wanted to tax all income, he has now adopted the Clinton position.

This isn't news. Some folks play golf to relax. Others play basketball or work out at the gym. Everytime the Senator makes a move is not some calculated, secret meeting. (Vetting the VP's. REALLY???)

Sometimes a workout is just a workout. Just because folks are used to older White men runinng for the Presidency playing a round of golf to relax doesn't mean there aren't other forms of relaxation. Given all that's going on around both Obama and McCain, don't you thing they could both use a little R & R.

Is this for real? Do you guys actually think it is newsworthy stuff to report on whether a candidate sweats while working out or how bad he stinks (both lit. and fig.). Any idea how ridiculous this looks to the rest of the world. Instead of focusing on real issues and his recent flip flops on key promises (apart from incessant repetition of the word 'Change' without actual in-depth articulation of what and how this change will be brought about).

Sometimes I have a feeling that contents considered newsworthy in the United States primarily fall into one of the 2 categories: the sensational and the bizarre.

Obama, on the other hand, lied the whole time which is being exposed by his current flip flops on the issues. Sorry, Obama's excuse that he is refining his policies is a joke. He is an attorney and law professor and he doesn't know where he stands on Gun Control? Funny….

You have gone and reminded us that we do own a stake in the electoral process and it’s not the special interest groups and corporations that should decided for us how the country should be run. WOW with all of the unemployment in this country people are hurting and loosing their homes. Still people have 52 million dollars to give away for someone who does not have clue how to fix anything.

***************************************************************************
As opposed to people who can give away 20 plus million for someone for the same reason? Your reasoning is your own, and mine is my own, but the people in your party generally caused most of that unemployment and house-losing by their let-business-do-what-it-wants-to policies, and the wild, out of control spending that accompanied the idiotic decision to go to Iraq, whose leader had nothing to do with 9/11. Barack Obama can do no worse of a job than George W. Bush did, and for that matter, John McCain could not, either. However, I think the Repubs should sit this one out, I really do. Okay, so we know he raised 52 million, I suppose 18 of that goes to Hilliary though she is probably writing a book right now that will net her $25 mil. So, she will pay him back right?

Or, the 18 million cracks she made can each donate $2 and she will have 36 million and Obama can keep his 52 mil now they can both go workout and feel real good.

Me, I am ready to vote. I've made up my mind, don't really care what happens between now and November - I'm going to go workout - bye:)

Michelle, PA   July 17th, 2008 11:42 am ET

I'm confused about all the references in posts to Obama as a "whinny little man", especially when reading this article.

Are his critics trying to claim Obama is a horse - maybe a work horse in the gym? Or are they just confused by the dem donkey?

By "little", are they referring to the size of Obama's in-shape frame compared to a monstrous beer belly?

Is he an "empty suit" because it's not soaked with sweat and packed with a spare tire?

Somebody help me out here, 'cuz I don't get it.

Bob   July 17th, 2008 11:42 am ET

Barack is probaly working out more before he leaves on his trip to Europe and the Middle East. There may not be any gyms available. Also it's good to stay in shape, as working out helps a person deal with stress. Running for office takes a lot out of a person. Wake up people!

Andrea from Houston, TX   July 17th, 2008 11:42 am ET

I mean, really…who cares!?! This man goes to the gym to work out and goes back to another one to play basketball with friends and yall are trippin???

Give this man some space. Or better yet, how about you start reporting on how many naps John McCain takes a day…maybe someone's interested in that.

Lee, New York City   July 17th, 2008 11:42 am ET

At least he's a "healthy" SOCIALIST.

What difference does it make that he works out…so did Bush. What counts is what are his policies, and they are going to drive this Great Country into the ground…BIGGER GOVERNMENT, HUGE INCREASE IN TAXES, GOVERNMENT GIVE-AWAY PROGRAMS, ETC.

Obama would be BAD FOR AMERICA.

Phil, FL   July 17th, 2008 11:41 am ET

Thank God he isn't stuck mentally in the 60's

Steve Green   July 17th, 2008 11:41 am ET

We should be worrying more about his policies for the economy, gas prices, and erradicating terrorism globally than his exercise routine.

I'd love to hear what kind of exercise McGrumpy Old Man is doing!! Oh yeah, he's walking up the stairs at any given moment to one of his EIGHT MANSIONS owned by his reptilian-looking wife.

Get real people, we need someone with vigor, stamina and sense enough to stay in shape in that White House for a change we can all live with and prosper from.

Dodge debates
Run away from problems
Blow hot air

And flip flopping also takes alot out of you.

RRO   July 17th, 2008 11:35 am ET

This is still campaign strategy. Highlights the fact that he is young and energetic and that Mccain is an old man. The fact that he doesn't sweat probably only helps that idea.

JA Cook   July 17th, 2008 11:35 am ET

Wow, the media is evaluating his degree of sweating?

How about something a bit more challenging from the press corp than paparazzi coverage?

How do the plans of the candidates compare on health, education, the economy, the environment?

Or is that too hard for reporters to deal with?

What is this, Operation: Sweat?

Obama definitely looks to be in better shape than McCain, both physically and mentally.

How tall is Obama? What's his wingspan? Does he play the 3 or 4? What's his shooting percentage? Can he take you off the dripple? Can he finish while taking contact?
My advice to Obama is to try to get covered by ESPN. Playing with the tarheels was great, but he should do more of that. ESPN has a huge reader/viewer base. This is great for his image.

Connie   July 17th, 2008 11:33 am ET

It is great that our next president is working hard to stay healthy for his family and the country. I think that people that believe so much in John McBush should know there are many employers that mandate that employees over 70 retire or take competency test. Why would we elect some one that is already showing sign of dementia. Sign of a fit man , sound mind and body. Go Obama!!!!!!!!!

I would like to ask, "How in the world can Obama raise 52 M in the month of June? People are loosing houses, jobs and unemployment checks (because they collected the max amount) and isn't there a limit that one person can donate? Where is all this money coming from. Certinaly not from me. I wouldn't donate to any candidates, especially when they make millions and live on $30,000. a year. What's wrong with this picture? Can I get an answer here. AT   July 17th, 2008 11:30 am ET

Staying fit and in the gym improves ones mental focus and agulity. It reduces stress and give you the competitive edge. As a military officer, OBAMA is already showing he does have the judgement to lead and that is why military men and women like myself are overwhelmingly going to VOTE OBAMA in 08.

Also to others who complain about him raising so much money, it is also because of people like me why he raise so much and in October I will donate the $1500, at a time when it will be critically needed, until then I continue to give as much as I can when I can. I would rather not get new clothes or GAS for a week or more and donate to him. AMERICA needs change. McCain taking $70,000. a pop from cooperate lobbyist proved that his never did do anything for Campaign finance. All McCain did in 30 years is so called campaign finance which amounts to NOTHING! That alone isn't fit to get elected even to the Senate, no wonder ARIZONA is in play, they don't like him in AZ and he never was challenged for all these years!

mary hussein, colorado springs   July 17th, 2008 11:28 am ET

i'm S-O-O-O glad to know that! i was awake all night wondering about that, does he or doesn't he?

With all of the important plans he has for his administration, I don't think his ability, or lack of, to sweat is high on the priority list. Stick to what's important. I doubt discussing such mundane characteristics is going to get him elected.

As for McBush, he's old and bordering on senility, as evidenced by some of his ideas, and lack of intelligent planning for this country.

Oh, and before you jump on me for that "old" remark, I'm 80 and can say such a thing about McScrew-Up.

Thanh   July 17th, 2008 11:28 am ET

Actually, leading by example, and staying fit sends a great message to the youth of America, who each and every year seem to get weaker and fatter.

If everyone in this country exercised at least 30 minutes a day, I can guarantee that healthcare premiums will go down. You can't have chronic disease saturating the system.

He'll pick his running mate when he's ready to, and you just need to deal with it..

There are unconfirmed reports based on phone banking efforts to reach out to Super D’s that 8 previously Obama SD’s, expressed that, given the opportunity, they would vote for Hillary at the convention.

Did you get that?

Superdelegates who have “declared” for Obama are now saying that they would vote for Hillary at the convention.

How many more disillusioned SuperDs are out there?

No wonder Obama wants to break with tradition and keep Hillary off the convention ballot, even though she won more popular votes than he did, and neither of them earned enough pledged delegates to secure the nomination.

It would be refreshing, though, if he would counsel his surrogates and supporters to quit with the ageist McCain bashing comments. I agree, the Republican's having held both houses in all but 1+ of these 7+years, they have done a great job securing both our bourders AFTER 9/11. During this same time they have not increased taxes on corporations that took their companies overseas for cheap labor.

If Obama hasn't a clue, what does that say about the other party??

to "Vote Nader" - If "RALPH NADER" was doing something more "news-worthy" than Obama, then he will be "in the news."

It's the journalist who have nothing else to do - trying to catch Obama doing something wrong, etc.

IT'S CALLED "STAYING FIT AND TRIM" - More than McCain is!!!

He doesn't lift weights though, I wonder if he has a six pack.

Articles like these will only once again stir up the bitter emotions and feelings of those vile, jaded Hillary supporters who won’t move forward. CNN please stop posting such articles so the focus can now truly shift towards the general election. Then finally the debate can be between Senator Obama and Senator McCain supporters.

Let Hillary rest easy on that same big sofa in her mansion happily thinking of the caskets, the graves, and the dead bodies of the over half a million Iraqi women, children and other non-combatants she helped to kill when she proudly voted hand-in-hand with Bush/Cheney. Then again bitter Hillary supporters, to you the lives of innocent Muslim Iraqi women aren’t as valuable as American women anyway.

God Bless America…

I'm actually happy to see that a presidential candidate wears flipflops.

Someone did a story on Barack's press as opposed to McCain's press, and it's 2 to 1. I thought to myself–because more people are interested in Barack, the nets aren't crazy. More viewers, more ads, more money—makes sense to me. I'd talk about Barack 24/7 to raise the revenue, its good business.

Shawn   July 17th, 2008 11:14 am ET

THIS SAME THING HAPPENED WHEN BUSH RAN FOR OFFICE. WE TALKED SO MUCH ABOUT HOW GREAT AND MORAL HE WAS. LOOK WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM. THE MEDIA HAS DECIDED THAT OBAMA SHOULD BE PRESIDENT. WHY SHOULD WE EVEN VOTE NOW. ITS THEIR DECISION. I AM NOT VOTING BECAUSE OF IT. CALL IT IGNORANT IF YOU WANT.
