Barack Obama said conservative media is responsible for negative attacks on his wife.
Barack Obama said conservative media is responsible for negative attacks on his wife.

(CNN)—Barack Obama blamed the 'conservative press' Wednesday for negative attacks on his wife Michelle.

“What happened was that the conservative press—Fox News and the National Review and columnists of every ilk—went fairly deliberately at her in a pretty systematic way,” Obama told Glamour Magazine.

In the latest NYT/CBS Poll, released this week, Michelle Obama is viewed in a favorable light by 29 percent of those questioned and unfavorably by 16 percent. Cindy McCain, wife of presumptive Republican nominee John McCain is viewed favorably by 18 percent and unfavorably by 8 percent.

Watch: What kind of first lady would Michelle Obama be?

Both presumptive nominees have urged media outlets to avoid bringing their wives into the battle for the White House

“[Our wives] should be treated with respect and if there's any disrespectful conduct on the part of anyone, those people should be rejected,” McCain told CNN last month.

Obama emphasized the plea in the interview released Wednesday, saying his wife and Cindy McCain are not fair game because “essentially, spouses are civilians. If you start being subjected to rants..day in day out, that’ll drive up your negatives.”

In the interview, for the October issue, Obama said his wife actually epitomizes the quintessential American woman and called his two children a testament to who she is.

“She’s the most honest person I know, she’s smart, she’s funny,” The Illinois senator said explaining the attacks have come from people who have fundamental policy differences with him and encouraged them to point debate toward him, not his wife.

Pressed on whether he thought the McCain campaign is responsible for the attacks Obama explained it’s not necessarily the campaign ‘itself,’ but more the ‘apparatus’ of the conservative media as a whole including the columnists and blogs.

“I don’t have a thick skin when it comes to criticism of my wife,” Obama admitted. “The problem is that rarely do these folks have the guts to say it to your face.”

you fiercerly attacked bill clinton before, why not allow other people to attack yours?

Michelle Is Lovely   July 17th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

I love to hear Michelle speak. She's doing a wonderful job in spite of the haters. People are just jealous because she has a higher approval rating than Barbie- let-me-ask-my-husband-if-I-can-speak McCain.

So eat your hearts out:
RJ, Scott, Terry H, Fella from Chicago, Dave the Moron, Ree, Joan, Don and the rest of you morons.

Dan   July 17th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

Maybe it's time the "liberal media" which hasn't said a negative thing about Cindy finally bring up her drug addictions and other issue's…Then maybe we'll get McCain to blow up like he did when Bush brought it up in the primaries back in 2000.

Let's see, my pick for first lady….a plastic looking, millionaire drug abuser who distributes beer she inherited from her daddy, or an intelligent, outspoken, strong woman who's come from the ground up and who works to improve healthcare access to those in Chicago….who do I want women to have for a rolemodel…I'll take Michelle Obama any day.

Jeffrey G. Brown   July 17th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

"Scott" said…
"She's the one who said she wasn't proud of her country until now.
Besides…Obama's problem if he wins the WH would be where to put the likes of Rev Jackson, Wright, Sharpton, Farrakan in his cabinet?"

WOW Scott, YOU are a racist to even make a comment like that! Obama denounced Wright, is on the outs with Jackson and NEVER had Sharpton or Farrakan involved in his campaign. YOU are showing your true racist colors. Most of the white people who blog against Obama do it because thay are BIGOTS. Get past the hatred you morons, this is 2008! By the way, I am a white, middle aged man.

I could care less about conservative talk-show host Sean Hannity. For someone who dropped out of college he sure makes it seem he knows everything.

Alyce   July 17th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

It is really a shame that the media (fox etc) keeping showing over and over Michelle's statement. I havn't always been proud of America either, does that make me unpatriotic? American doesn't have a good history especially where african americans are concerned. Give the Obamas credit for working hard and trying to be good citizens. Obama has inspired so many people. Leave Michelle alone!!!!!

Raymond Duke   July 17th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Whine and cry some more Obama. People didn't tell that wife of yours to open her mouth and inser her foot by "finally being proud of America for the first time in her adult life", People didn't tell her to go to a black liberation church that hates America for twnety years and they didn't tell her to say if Clinton won she would have to think on voting for her or not. She deserves what she gets and I hope her husband loses. What kind of first lady would this be for America. A person who feels this way and clearly hates white people. I guess a "fist-bump" fest at the white house with reverend Wright and Farrakunn.

go away mongers- Ventura ca   July 17th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Fox NOISE and other such entities have every right to preach their hate and fear- but THIS TIME we are fighting back and the mongers will see that the American people are sick of their tactics!

Scared in SC   July 17th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

If Obama wants his wife left alone, perhaps he shouldn't parade her, or and his children for that matter, across tabloid shows such as Access Hollywood. Whatever serves his purpose at a particular moment seems to be his MO. He can not make a definitive decision on anything without going back on it…we've seen examples of such behavior in ABUNDANCE!

H. Charles   July 17th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

A bunch of adults calling people they've never even met names. Ladies, I'm sorry your husband doesn't have the education or charisma to run for president, but I'm sure if he did you'd be right behind him. Grow up, get a life, and go back to watching your soaps.

All these right wing cowards can not fight a fair battle and let the best man win. They have to scratch and claw and bite and sling mud and hope that they'll do enough damage along the way.

Susan   July 17th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

I agree that candidates wives are not running for office, but when they stump for their husbands and say or do outrageous things, as Mrs. Obama has, then they become fair game.

Jim   July 17th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

I think she can take of herself better than he can. Worry about the state of the nation not your wife's sensitivities.

LMAO, he is the typical liberal.

Free speech! Say what you want! Do anything! Gay marriage! Abortions cool! etc…. etc……

Then when someon talks bad about his wife, just like they have for decades to other candidates wives….. lets throw freedom of speech out the window! Lol

Loretta from California   July 17th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen … oh, wait, Michelle Obama is out of the kitchen, she is campaigning! Listen to her speech at UCLA, she dared to claim that a government leading by Barack Obama will heal the souls of American citizens. Even churches don't claim they can heal your soul. Well, maybe the one they attended in the past twenty years. You want people to leave her alone? Bush tried to scare you with terrorism, now Obama wanna scare you with your broken soul, that's a whole new level of crap.

Kaye Martin   July 17th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

Mrs. Obama is an intelligent and devoted wife and mother and should be treated with respect. Senator Obama is correct. The press should be evenhanded in their treatment of the candidates' wives.

B J   July 17th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

You cant say anything to Obama's face, he only has controlled venues with prepared speeches. Get a thicker skin, you dont think that Laura Bush has had daggers thrown at her over her time. If Michelle is going to come out and be controversial there will be more criticism.

There is a left wing media as well, people seem to forget that!

Missing the Point   July 17th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

I get the point some of you make that Michelle created her own problems. That isn't the point, and to push that is idiotic. His point is that Cindy McCain has a lot of questionable actions in the past, but Cindy McCain isn't his opponent, and he firmly believes candidates' wives should be out of the arena. It's amazing how many of you lash out at the Obamas when your own candidate agrees on these kinds of issues.

joe in VA   July 17th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

To Sherry Graves,

I'm proud of my country, I don't bear any responsibility for what transiped in the past before I was even born. If you can find a better country to live in I suggest you go there.

And you madam, are an idiot.

Sorry Obama but Michelle's big mouth is all the attraction the news media and those who don't trust you need to stir the pot.

Don't attack Michelle Obama when John McCain tells rape jokes and then pretends he never did. He is a bastard. He is so out of touch with the modern world. With that temper he would start world war 3. Mitt Romney is similiar to McCain. Probaly tells dirty jokes. Snakes usually hang out together.

FNC during the primaries was all over Hillary when they thought she..like herself…was going to be the nominee. Now that HRC is OUT:) they have to focus their trash talk on Obama and family. Pretty sick but thats the Republican way when they have no positive solution to the problems they created!

DottieF   July 17th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

No, Obama, the press is not to blame for attacks on Michelle. Michelle is to blame for attacks on Michelle. When she started making public speeches that automatically made her fodder. And while we're at it, tell her to start dressing the way First Ladies should dress, so she can kind of be in the habit by the time she becomes First Lady, if it happens.

Debbie   July 17th, 2008 1:21 pm ET

Wasn't it Harry Truman that said, "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen?" He was probably the last great Democrat. If Mrs. Obama is going to campaign for her husband, she is fair game. Are people supposed to be 'nice' just because she's a female? That's pretty sexist.

In regards to the really proud statement, try listening to the rest of that speech when she is talking about the political process and people being involved. How is it that McCain can say that he didn't love America until he was away from it and he doesn't get criticized her Michelle. A bit of double standard. And what else has Michelle done to deserve this treatment??? What else?

The only one Obama can blame for attacks on his wife is himself. He chose to run for president, and he let her take the stage with him. That's how it works BO whether you like it or not. If you don't get out, it gets much worse if you actually win.

Barack and Michelle are both whiners. The right wing media didn't force Michelle to make her comments about finally being proud of her country. She started it with not being proud of her country until her husband was running for office. Yes….Americans treat everyone the same – regardless of color or ethinicity. Riiigggghhhttt

California Gold   July 17th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

I agree with both Senator McCain and Senator Obama. If the media can't come up with information of substance and relevance about the candidates' policies and platform then don't start creating cheap shots. Sliming wives, husbands, and children is not "news" nor does it sway voters who are interested in the critical issues, direction of our government, and our nation's position in the world.

Peggy Lucas, Middletown, Pennsylvania   July 17th, 2008 1:13 pm ET

Clinton/McCain   July 17th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

She did it to herself with her crazy comments. The 'conservative' media were the only ones that actually weren't afraid to report her off the wall comments. The 'conservative media' were the ones who were actually fair in the primary season, unlike the 'liberal media' that were too in love with the Obamas to report anything negative about them. This one of the reasons why this Hillary supporter will vote for McCain.

The contention I've made before as to why McCain lacks support from key groups:(Latinos, African-Americans, etc) – When Republicans/Conservatives/GOP/Fox News make smears and divisive bigoted caricatures and statements of one group (Michelle Obama) you're making them to all groups. Continue this trend of bigotry and divisiveness will get you no where! Americans are smarter than this!

Obama needs to stop whining! He best start to understand that the press is not always going to portray him or his wife in the best light and get used to it.

I haven't heard McCain complaining about the liberal press and their depiction of him and his wife. Yesterday CNN TV ran a story repeatedly calling Cindy McCain his "meal ticket" because she earns much more than he does.

Even though Barack out earns his wife based on his book sales, I bet he'd starting whining if the conservative press called him her "meal ticket".

Doug, GA   July 17th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

Maybe Barak should look for another line of work or Michelle keep her hateful rhetoric mouth shut and the media will go away. Barak is like my dad 'do as I say not as I do'

DEMOCRAT   July 17th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

I must say that the right is lucky that the media does not say anything about Cindy because it would all be over. So they focus on Michelle I wish they would focus on cindy

Annette   July 17th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

There is some truth to that comment. The media in my opinion has elevated the fact that Ms. Obama is a well spoken, everyday kind of mom who happens to have a strong educational background and a 6 figure salary. What's wrong with that. I thought that was the American way?

A Woman In California For Obama   July 17th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

As an Obama supporter, I really think you are wrong on this. If they are out there campaigning they are fair game. As inappropriate as some comments may be sometimes, there are people who base some part of their vote on your wives and your personal lives. I am one of those people. Which is precisely why I could never vote for JM knowing how he disrespected his first wife. These are important issues in picking a potential president. Michelle appears to be a strong determined woman and I think she can handle it. Just don't become too sensitive. Criticism goes with the job. Which is why many of us would never go out there because we don't want our families thrust into the spot light and ridiculed. I'm asking you to please let this subject go. You will start to look weak if you don't.

Janice, PA   July 17th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Obama supporters remind me of an episode of SpongeBob – Where Plankton convinces them to wear buckets on their heads then he flips a switch and then they worship him and do whatever he says. Following someone blindly because he can give a good speech doesn't say much about your ability to think for yourselves. And all of you fawning all over his wife, do you know her or has some of that bucket power rubbed off for her as well. PATHETIC

He is a typical politician who constantly flip – flops – cannot take a firm stand on anything – yet you people see him as the second coming. Wow if he wins it will be fun to watch all the deflated faces when it finally sinks in what he is and what he can really accomplish versus what he has promised.

As for his wife, well if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen.

Obama Supporter from FL   July 17th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

I think the issue is more a lack of respect of all parties. If you have something personal and nasty to say about someone else, whether the Obamas or the McCains, maybe you should suck it up. My disappointment is in the pathetic level of discourse of the people here blogging filth about generally good people, not in the news media that simply knows on which side their bread is buttered and reports on what the idiotic public wants to hear.

DEMOCRAT   July 17th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

I must say that the right is lucky that the media does not say anything about Cindy because it would all be over. So they focus on Michelle I wish they would focus on Michelle…

Dear "STILL FOR HILL",

Maybe you should shut your trap. Who cares about your family, when they produce vipers like you?

Michelle is just as patriotic as anyone, even more so because in spite of racist pigs like you, she still loves this country. You want to attack Michelle, bring it on– I'm ready for you.

Obama, the Democratic Nominee 08

Marie   July 17th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Well, you cannot have it both ways. Michelle is intelligent and opinionated. She has every right to express her own views, but the coverage comes with the territory. If you don't want to be the headlines, then keep your opinions to yourself. She wants to make headlines, just not be them. Ask Hillary how well that will work. If you don't want to be under a microscope, then politics is the wrong arena in which to be.

Peggy Robson   July 17th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

Hillary can take it on the chin…that's okay but not MIchelle…just another example of how it seems to be hands off Obama. I wish he had been treated EXACTLT as the other candidates were and where would he be today.

Sean   July 17th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

How is this about "whining" or having a "thick skin?" Any good husband will be bothered by unfair, harsh attacks on his wife, and will do something to try to stop them. I bet if he had said nothing, you Obama haters would just be on here saying that clearly, he must be a bad husband since he lets his wife get attacked and says nothing.

Honesty amd integrity seem to be a thing of the past in this country for a large percentage of the population. All you have to do is read some of the vile comments about Obama here to verify that fact.

Obama is a good man, and Michelle is a good woman. I can't wait for them to be in the White House as the first couple…

Problem is he wants it both ways. Iif you send your wife out to stump for you, now she's not a "civilian", she's a campaign surrogate like any other – open to same criticism as any other. If the wives stay on the sidelines, then the media should leave them alone. If they jump into the fray, they're fair game.

2pacolypse   July 17th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

I can't blame the man for defending his wife as well as John McCain. These political battles get nasty and the wives should not be brought into the spotlight unless they're are actually running for public office, or do something and say something publicly so out of bounds that it warrants coverage and criticism.

The wives should be off limits and people like Sean Hannity, Chris Matthews, Glen Beck, Rush Limbaugh and other neo-con morons need to back up or be bold enough so say it to the man's face and risk being KNOCKED DA HELL OUT!

Pick Me! Pick Me!!   July 17th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

Sue Jones   July 17th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

Obama continually blames everyone for anything that is not positive about him/his wife or family. He seems to forget that his wife has made some less than positive remarks, that he allowed his children to be interviewed, that he attended and listened to racist comments in his church, and that he is the one moving from the base of our partyl. He needs to grow up and to be responsible isn't that what he continually tells audiences that we need to be adults and be responsible and not place blame. He needs to grow up and stop his childish behavior blaming others and throwing supporters under the bus.

Where is PUMA Now? PUMA is a rang tagged Group of Hill Republican supporters who try to spin as if they are Democrats. I am in the Army and work with a bunch of Republican Female Clinton supporters, who are so "bitter" that Hillary got axed by OBAMA, they are now working to act like Democrats, but they never were. One came by to have be witness her Out of State voter registration/ballot used in the military and I was like, Oh you are Republican, the way you cated I thought you were a Democrat, so "PRO- Hillary'? She was like, oh, I did the online survey and I was surprised I am more Facist and I was like, yeah the Republicans are a facist bunch don't you think? Oh how I like the FAKE PUMA people and the bigots and racist in America.

OBAMA must not take anything for granted, those who support him will vote for him, those who would rather support McCain because of race knowing OBAMA is better should check there Christian values, they are the same who saw nothing wrong with slavery of Jim Crow or segregation. They are those who will forever be 'BITTER"! Virginia, Georgia, Arizona, New Mexico, Alabama, North and SOuth Carolina, Florida, Lousianna, and Texas will swing to the Democrats in 2008, because the black voters are never polled and are also always under represented in election turn out, hispanics also. This time they will all vote for OBAMA witht he youth VOTEbecause we are tired. OBAMA will get 4 years and if we make the wrong choice in him, it will b Hillary in 2012, but for now it is OBAMA and until he prove me wrong it will be him in 2012. McCain has so much negatives, I can't wait until September and October for that October surprise!

MILITARY FOR OBAMA

McCain crashed 5 plains worth over $250 million, he should have been black listed as a mediocre officer, he willfully crash him plane to try and make himself a hero. He wasn't and isn't the only POW alive, why aren't they running for office?

Michelle, PA   July 17th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

Michelle Obama is an intelligent, outspoken, highly educated, black woman in America. If she were any one of those adjectives followed by "woman", she would be criticized by conservatives and the media. That is not to say she doesn't deserve scrutiny for her own words and actions on behalf of her husband's campaign. Those who put themselves in the spotlight can't expect to escape the glare. But I highly doubt she would be the object of so much pure venom if she were a skinny little blond who stood meekly behind her husband, lowered her eyes and kept her mouth shut – like Cindy McCain.

tedious898   July 17th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

You Puma's and republicans are nauseating.

Your first thought is to attack anything having to do with Michelle…simply because she's not your basic, run of the mill public figure.

Let's see Cindy McCain, pill popper, adulterous, millionaire. Heck I'd love everything about America in her position. Let's see John McCain, adulter, Keating 5, says – I never loved America……

…yet 1 black woman makes a statement for which she will never be forgiven. YOU GUYS SUCK! If you attacked my wife under such circumstances, I'd show you what for for

You get what you deserve…and there isn't anything we can do about it. You answer to a higher authority whether you believe in God and Jesus Christ or not. So you, stop your whining and suck it up. Your next president is a Black man. Don't like it? Leave America!

Right. Barack and Michelle's delusion of elitism has nothing to do with her being attacked. Nor do any of her unpatriotic statements or implicit reverse racism. Nah.

Obama, if you don't want Michelle to become a focus of political attacks, don't make her a focus of your efforts to sell yourself politically. You send her out there to talk about issues.

TSAH   July 17th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

EVERYONE in this blog know "doggone" well that Michelle Obama is getting the "raw" end of the deal while Ms. Cindy gets a free ride!!!

Michelle would make an "excellent" first lady!!! Why do people feel that a "first lady" has FIT one "category". Maybe it's because Americans are so used to seeing White first ladies that they cannot picture any other lady of COLOR!!! Get used to the COLOR and everything else will fall in place!!!

And the "PATRIOT" thing??? I bet NO ONE in this blog can give a "true" definition of a PATRIOT and say that they lived it 100% of their lives. I KNOW I HAVEN'T and I am more – or just as much as all of the "other" Americans in this BLOG – so-called PATRIOTIC!!!

This is how the Republicans play their little sewer games, only because most of them are scum. If the News media and Democrats were to start dragging Cindy McCain's character through the mud, the republicans would cry foul. Of course the Republicans and Fox news media are only doing this to keep the spot light off of themselves and their sins tucked away.

I agree with Barack Obama. Many people simply don't know what to do with a capable, confident, intelligent, well-informed and out-spoken woman…and whoooooooooooo if she should also be AFRICAN AMERICAN! Now we are REALLY getting out of the kitchen and that is just plain threatening to the good ole boys out there (and also the good ole girls who are married to them). To these unfortuanete folks we must be lost if we are out of the kitchen, center stage and holding our own in an elevated conversation. Get over it dudes, we are here to stay (I am white by the way and still struggling). Women do not have to become men to make it what is now a capable PERSON'S world, so loosen your tie, take off your jacket and get comfortable in the kitchen guys…it's not all that bad if you're not a prisoner there.

I hope OBAMA is not getting upset because people are saying things about his wife. This is to be expected. He shouldn't waste his time trying to ask people to leave his wife out of this. They are one, you can't have one without the other. THEY ARE UNITED. DON'T WASTE ALL THE CAMPAIGN DONTATIONS pleading to people not to talk about your wife. This is one thing he CANNOT control, and he knows that very well, (REV. J. WRIGHT) what other people think or say about you is beyound your control. In a CNN interview Cindy McCain stated she stayed in Nevada rather than moving to Washington because of her chidren which inferred Washington isn't a fit place to raise your children.

Had this been a statement made by Michelle Obama the news medias would have played this video clip for 3 or 4 weeks asking if Michelle Obama thinks she is too good for Washington or Washington is some how an inferior place to raise your family.

but has anyone else noticed the rage in Cindy McCain's eyes? If anyone's scary, she is!

Mike   July 17th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

If it's true McCain called his wife a trollop and a c – - t, she shouldn't have to hear any more crap from folks outside her family. My unsolicited advice to McCain and the press: Leave the wives out of it.

Glen in Laurel, MD   July 17th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

He was asked a question and answered it; how is that whining? Do you accuse McCain of whining for saying the same thing?
How about some logical arguments instead of the same boring, juvenile talking points (usually in all caps)? How about listening with an open mind and giving the other side their due when they're right about something? Are you capable of calming down long enough to do that?
Okay, I'll go first: the CNN headline about McCain's "tepid welcome" at the NAACP convention was unfair, given the casual mention of the standing ovation he got at the end.
Your turn: something positive about Obama from the people here who have been raging about him and his wife. Can you? Or will your heads explode?

Matt, Manchester, CT   July 17th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

Trust me, Obama, this is nothing compared to the carnage you'll face leading up to the general election! You be quite pleased to take second place in that race and not have to face it all again in 4 years!!

TKCROW   July 17th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

Obama, what did you think was going to happen when your wife opens her mouth and says "for the first time in my life I am proud of my country". When you speak the truth like she did you have to accept the consequences. Grow up Obama, people are very proud of the U.S.A. and have been since this country was founded. If your wife, or you for that fact, are not proud of this country – then just go find another one to live in. Quit whining Obama, and attend a Senate session.

Romulus, Michigan   July 17th, 2008 12:44 pm ET

CNN I do question how you set up you headline for these blogs, however, they cause quite an interesting exchange of point of views.

People who believe these elaborate uses of words to misinform the public are the kind of people who usually don't take the time to research the details. This leak of digging for the truth keeps them misinformed and that how the want to be, misinformed.

mark   July 17th, 2008 12:43 pm ET

Well well – as "smart" as he says he is…. Obama hasn't figured out yet that he and his family are under scrutiny daily. He chose this life and this position. If he wasn't so into showing off and rounding up the troops to "change Washington" then he wouldn't have to deal with the media or attacks at all. He's clueless about life as President yet so many of you want to elect this man? Think about it…. all he's doing is playing into sympathy and "poor poor me look how I'm being treated. " Hmmm, every president before him has been treated the same way by the media – so Obama, pull up your boxers and DEAL with it.

I'm not proud of my country when it comes to these elections and by the way I'm retired miltary man. I think FOX news is the most racist news organization in the U.S. or in the world for that matter.

Rachel   July 17th, 2008 12:43 pm ET

Geez they are fair game if they are campaigning for you they represent you so when they say something they should be expected to be called out on it. I havent seen them really attacking michelle why the renewed cry? You can your wife to be able to go on good morning america, access hollywood, oprah, the view, and be on the cover of people, but no one is allowed to say anything negative about her?

jfs Memhis, Tn   July 17th, 2008 12:43 pm ET

SOUNDS A LITTLE DESPERATE REPS. You could probably go after their dog………except they do not have one. Maybe you could dig up some dirty on Obama's Grandmother in Africa…or….that WHITE WOMEN in Kansas who claims to also be his Grandmother. How about deceased parents ….wil that count. WE ARE TRIED OF THIS NONSENSE…..Hows about trying to win on merit and integrity??? I really doubt that the Republican Party has any of tha left after 8 years of deceit and cover-ups. I am ashamed for THE GRAND OLD PARTY. What would Regan say????

John   July 17th, 2008 12:43 pm ET

Give him a few hours and he will flip flop on this as well.

I don't blame him for wanting to protect his wife, but she has said some pretty outrageous things and it has been reported. Her character has been in question as well. No one knows who these people are or what they truly stand for – it changes daily.

How can anyone say anything to Obama's face when HE
lacks the GUTS to even go on any show that won't kiss his feet?

Nom Deplume   July 17th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Rasumssen poll shows that people now see that Obama is an empty suit.

When they look at his Robin Hood economic plan, they see that lower taxes don't help much when all the employers shut down US operations.

When they look at his foreign policy, they see that refusing to flex muscle is viewed in international circles as a sign of weakness.

This isn't going to be a 2nd Carter term. This is going to be much, much, worse. Carter didn't hike taxes on wealth creation and kill off jobs. Carter didn't expand the welfare state (okay, he did but not by nearly as much as Obama will). Carter didn't roll over for our enemies and play submissive dog (okay, he did, but not by much). Carter was a giant compared to Obama.

Obama and his handlers have made it very clear that they want to end Pax Americana and end over 225 years of individual freedoms. Now if you want to live in a European style state, vote Obama.

Got Freedom?

The press is infatuated with Him and ignores all his flaws.

Where is the coverage of all the hateful comments that Michelle has made against HRC?

Michelle would have to "think" about voting for the democratic candidate if HRC were the nominee…. etc etc.

Obama wants to turn us into a Sharia government where no criticism is allowed.

Obama thinks he is God.

Laura   July 17th, 2008 12:40 pm ET

You know what is laughable….

Obama is complaining that the conversative media is picking on his little ol' wife…BUT…look at the blogs on this website.. You all agree its horrible for the MSM to say or print anything bad about Michelle Obama and yet look at how many of you are talking down Cindy McCain.

Is that the "pot calling the kettle black" (no racism intended)?

NO ONE IS EXEMPT FROM THIS CONTEMPT OF SOMEONE WHO IS UN-AMERICAN SUCH AS MICHELLE. SHE ASKED FOR IT AND NOW SHE IS GETTING IT. IF YOU CAN'T STAND THE HEAT THEN YOU ARE IN THE WRONG BALLGAME. IF I WAS YOU I'D PICK UP MY BALL AND GO HOME ALL THE WAY BACK TO NIGERIA AND LIVE WITH MY FATHER. HE MAY BE SYMPATHETIC TO MICHELLE.

nalucana   July 17th, 2008 12:39 pm ET

There are few things more off-putting than a man complaining
about his wife being mistreated. It lowers one's opinion of both him and the wife. Obama has been part of a masterly scheme to eliminate others from the competition – he has done it repreatedly and successfully. He somehow thinks that he should be above critical comment, and that his wife should enjoy the same right. He is not, nor is she. Start acting with a little humility, not to say maturity, or you will lose your precious votes.

And the sad thing is, people really believe this about them. Ignorant people!! There are lots of them out there. Who voted for Bush twice? The same stupid people!. So Michelle and Barack, stay strong! It's almost over! You will get there! And when you do, it's going to be like nothing these ignorant people have ever seen. Missy M   July 17th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

I am so tired of Obama's whining that people are picking on him and his wife. This couple is in the public eye by choice – he's running for president and she gives speeches to groups all over the country to garner support for him – it is the media's RESPONSIBILITY to report what they say and do. As the old saying goes … if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. If anyone should be whining, it should be McCain who never gets positive press, at least he's a trooper and doesn't cry about the negative press.

Love Michelle!!! I'm a republican (for 60 years) and I'm voting for Obama!!! I understood exactly what she said and the media pounced on her. She and Barack are the kind of image we need in the White House. Great family-no divorce-no drugs and they love this country for what it has been able for them to accomplish. The republican party has nothing else. Should we go after Cindy?!!! There a lot to go after Cindy for and I honor Barack for not doing it!

Obama-Junkie, IL   July 17th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

Obama missed an opportunity to go after conservative and bring in more Hillary supporters. He could have initiated a link that conservative media like FOX NEWS attacks strong, independent and intelligent women like his wife and Hillary Clinton.

I would have loved to see Hannity & Colmes and O'Reilly try to address this media bias without infuriating more Hillary and Obama supporters.

P, CA   July 17th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

For those of you who like to call people "whiners"… how old are you? Do you do this when you have a disagreement with people you know?

Let me give you a little secret you were supposed to be told when you went through adolescence: name-calling is just a sign of immaturity, a play for attention, and a form of insecurity. So you really like to judge people, huh? Make yourself look "good"? Didn't work, sorry. You still have no substance, and I can DEFNITELY back that up, so that isn't an empty judgment. THAT'S the maturity portion: can you back it up? There is debate/discussion/argument, and then there is petty bickering/name calling.

I don't deign to judge either candidate, but I see Obama "defending" and not "laying down" to take criticism, and you see it as "whining". I didn't hear his voice go up a few octaves and get nasal. Funny, huh?

CNN, yet again, I would ask that you please post this. You're allowing too many posts through that appear to have no substance, and I feel like my point is valid. Thanks.

No it's not fair to attack him on that, any more than it's fair to attack Michelle Obama on her statement. Bottom line, this process is increasing her pride in her country.
You're not listening to anything with an open mind; you're just grasping for talking points and using the same tired disengenuous ones over and over. It's gotten boring.

Michelle Obama has done nothing but tell the truth about the old US OF A. Hasn't been very much to be proud of!

Ok people come out of denial and confess…would you step up and say I'm proud of stealing this country from the Native Americans, or
I'm proud of overseeing slavery because the country I have stollen has alot of work to be done!!! Or I proud that the high-ups in the US goverment flooded our neighborhoods with drugs then blame it on the little guy.

Well….the little guy doesn't have ships, planes, trains, etc…..to have transported the big stuff…THE MAIN STUFF!

As an aside: Many of the posters who tell Obama to quit whining, sound like whiners themselves. But that's human nature: to yell loud and long about something we struggle with ourselves.

Peace to the whiners! :)

Typical Obama blaming everyone else except the cause of the very problem. In this case, it's his wife's insensitive, extremist and not very intelligent comments made at many of the Obama campaign events. JforObama   July 17th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

Yes, she did say those things but they totally twisted everything that she said and made it a horrible thing.

It becomes an attack when you twist what someone says. You do not know what it is like to be "black in America" and you will never know. You don't know how many doors may have been shut in her face and what she had to go through to get where she is today. Cindy had everything at her hand, while Michelle lived in poverty for her entire childhood. When you are raised in a very poor environment – which I have been and then become a success but you find that really your "skin color" causes trouble for you, you have no idea what that is like. I know this means nothing to you but I had to say it.

Tom in S.A. you have no idea. I don't expect for you to know. But I go to work everyday and have racist remarks said to me. In Michelle's disertation she stated she felt like she was on the outside looking in. I know exactly how she feels as a working African American who is faced with this everyday. But we are to suck it up and be quiet. Well, that is not the American way. We have the right to express concern in this country.

Remember she said "For the first time in her adult life, she is REALLY proud to be an American". I don't get what is wrong with saying that. Look at where she came from and what she and her husband has accomplished. She sees the light now. What is wrong with that?

Joan, Detroit, Mich.   July 17th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

Barack Obama hasn't been listening to his wife I guess. She's offensive. She doesn't need any help to make people dislike her.

You Obamaniacs make me laugh. You all spew so much hate against anyone who doesn't support your candidate, that your indignance over a bit of (IMHO, well deserved) criticism of both he and his wife has no credibility whatsoever.

Look in a mirror Obamaniacs. I'll wager you won't like what you see.

BHO put his wife and his kids in the campaign, no one else. To me that displays poor judgement and now, a denial of his own responsibility for it.

smarten up people! the media blows everything WAAAAY out of proportion. I suggest any negative press by the media on either of the candidates wives be taken with a grain of salt.

Most of the garbage on both candidates and their spouses are created by the media's desire for sensationalism and to "create" a story with snippets taken out of context. It's sad, but I've seen it first hand. Media has no remorse or ethics, they just want $ by getting attention.

Reality check #1   July 17th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

When Michelle chose to stump for Obama, she became fair game. Look at what the Obama camp did to the entire Clinton family and Ferraro, painting the most unbiased people , ones who have fought for equality all their lives, as racist. Suck it up Obama and for God's sake, quit whinning over everything. Try making yourself available for town hall meetings and debates instead of press statements without appearances.

Universal Citizen   July 17th, 2008 12:29 pm ET

The rapid erosion of core American values is scary. Women are now openly referred to as b—hes; sixteen-year-old girls can now have babies out of wedlock and become galaxies of their own; cheating on one's mate is no longer cheating — it's now called an affair instead of adultery. Nearly every moral decadence has been elevated to acceptability.

The media has cleverly imposed a conviction on Americans that if you speak out against these ills then you're a bigot and out of touch. They have reduced wives of candidates to fair game without any measure of respect to these women. It is even worse for Michelle Obama — an educated working black woman who knows how to speak her mind instead of being a house maid.

This election will go down as one of the nastiest in American history only because that fourth estate of democracy is no longer an impartial arbiter.

This is going to be quite an interesting election. We have just begun …

He now got what he wanted and both him and that wife of his need to deal with the downside. This election cycle will be a disaster for America no matter who wins. The sad part is that our president should be one of the best and brightest. Neither Obama nor John McCain fit into that category.

roland   July 17th, 2008 12:26 pm ET

The ignorant American voters will not see thru their nose and the handwriting on the wall, same old system that killed John F.Kennedy,Martin Luther King Jnr.

Same old jab that brought Geourge W,Bush to power twice, that took us to Iraq and make over sixty thousand Men and Women wounded and over four thousand seven hundred dead,

Same old system that lead to inflation, lead to foreclosure, banckrupcy, unemployment.

Politics of fear , hate and devide.

Think wisely, vote wisely, this is an opportunity to liberate our nation once again. No country recovers from sxteen year of same government ,same people ,same agender.

Government is run by costitution not by idealogy and selfishness.

Barack Obama is the anwser . America wake up ,be warned.

May God be with America..May God be with Barack Obama.

Good luck with that. These media outlets, conservative or liberal, are like sharks swimming in bloody water.

If your wife is campaigning for you and giving public speeches then sorry they are fair game. So Stop blaming the media for harking on what your wife said. If you do not want them criticized, or anyone in your campaign for that matter, tell them to keep their mouths shut.

Matthew, Philadelphia, PA   July 17th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

Glamour Magazine??? Gimme a break Obama!

Also, wives are fair game if they go out on the trail campaigning and attacking their spouse's opponents. Michelle made a choice to put herself out there and criticism is therefore legitimate.

Stephanie   July 17th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Wait – Obama is giving interviews to Glamour magazine?

Austin Chuks, Lagos, Nigeria   July 17th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

Depicting that graceful woman as a militant, shows how abysmal family values have dropped in America. Politics has become so dirty that even more naive Americans are drawn into supporting evil.

Those who don't understand, wait until some people do/say nasty things to/abt ur wives for no just cause. I guess some would not hesitate to commit murder.

Love your wife as yourself.

What a highly responsible president Obama WILL make in USA!

cyntia   July 17th, 2008 12:23 pm ET

Hello, this is still is free country, remember?
And we have a right to tell our opinion.
Mss Obama is a part of Obama's campaign and whatever whe tells can be discusses and criticized.
My personal opinion is she does not fit the role of fhe first lady because she has too much hatred inside of her.
Too arrogant! Take her statement that America should her husband now because they will not participate in election other time!
She believes that her husband is a messiah and americans should worship him. How arrogant!
And when they now trying to reinvent her now does not help.
Look ih her eyes!

Jerry in Boston   July 17th, 2008 12:23 pm ET

I agree that there has been nauseating and unfair criticism of Michelle Obama, but quite frankly, if you don't want your wife to be subject to public scrutiny, don't put her in the public spotlight.

You can't have it both ways. If you're going to use your photogenic family to create a positive image and to stump for you, then don't whine when they suffer the inevitable consequences of fame.

IAMWMD   July 17th, 2008 12:23 pm ET

We all know the real reason why the Obama's get dogged in the press and it's because they are not lilly white and racism is the core of the Republican party which owns the media.

Look at Brent the Fox News Guys neck

Ken Pittsburgh   July 17th, 2008 12:23 pm ET

Why is it that Michelle Obama who also spent a good part of her life helping others treated this way is because the contest is now been going on for 16 months 24/7 The talking heads will us what people are sayin according to their own media rules.

Deb, Allentown PA   July 17th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

He's absolutely right! Frankly, I'm surprised the conservative media went with the Michelle attacks given the skeleton's in Cindy's closet.

Get that Fox a Vixen ...   July 17th, 2008 12:22 pm ET

I think most reasonable, informed people have to admit that FOX News is a Republican leaning network.

On June 11, 2008, it was FOX that referred to Michelle Obama as, and I quote, “Obama’s Babies Mama”.

Any informed person knows that is an unflattering, largely urban-originated reference that was meant to be a coded reminder that she’s really black.

It was also intended to disrespect her as a wife and mother for “baby mamas” typically are not the wife of the father of the child. This was intended to plant a seed in the minds of conservative, largely white, “family-values-oriented” voters that, “She’s not like you”. She is beneath you.

Most thinking independents white voters, most women (republican-to-democrat), most non-caucasian (asian-to-latino-to-black) voters are, and will continue to be, offended and turned off by this. They will also not allow FOX to apologize or apply … “if anyone was offended” excuse.

Finally, all Americans will link FOX to the GOP. While the two are not exactly one in the same, we are all intelligent enough to know that the GOP has given its tacit approval to FOX, otherwise, we’d not be seeing this over and over again.

Obama blames the "Conservative press" for attacks on his wife? There's a new one. If his wife could keep her big mouth shut, she wouldn't get any attacks. She asked for it, and if he's too stupid to inderstand that, then what's he doing running for President?

Seattle Sue   July 17th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

Bill from ALabama   July 17th, 2008 12:21 pm ET

Wives are a big part of a candidate, and not only influence the candidate, but are in charge of handling White House special events…therefore they are fair game, because the images the First Lady gives thru the media have a lot of impact on the way the world views an administration,as well as the United States. Sounds like Obama is ,also, biting the hand that feeds him, when he criticizes the media. Obama owes much of where he is in this campaign ,to the media. The media has slanted everything Obama's way from the get-go.

A man's (and a woman's) job is to protect his (her) family. That's it. It's really the only job you have. Keep your wife (husband) and kids safe. Everything else is unimportant.
If any man out there would stand aside and watch his wife get attacked and questioned unfairly, I would question his committment to his family and his manhood.
He's doing what any husband (spouse) SHOULD do.
Let someone say something untrue or disrespectful to your wife or husband. What would you do? Standing silently by I doubt is option # 1.

You have to protect your family. He took an oath to this country before God, he also took an oath before God to his wife.
Anyone who loves their spouse HAS to understand that.

blake   July 17th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

When Michelle Obama is up on the stump raging and tearing into Republicans, Bush, etc., she opens herself up to criticism. You can't expect to be a visible member of a political campaign, making derogatory and inflamatory remarks about the other party and not expect to be fair game and be handed some retribution. If she wants to be isolated from attacks – personal or not – then stay off the stump.

what?   July 17th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

“I don’t have a thick skin when it comes to criticism of my wife,” Obama admitted. “The problem is that rarely do these folks have the guts to say it to your face.”-Obama
got to love this man…

in an interview when Cindy McCain was asked about the affair she was having with John McCain she answered "that's personal" and looked as if she desperately wanted to change the topic. though i believe she was right in doing so, i find that that topic does speak volumes on J. McCain's character, the reporters should be posing the question to Mr. McCain instead of his current wife. if John McCain could under mind the sacred vows of matrimony, why should we believe he will not under mind the vow of office? after all in his own words "failure breeds failure"

Lee, New York City   July 17th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

Obama's wife has some real issues that would come into play seeing how she wants to be the First Lady. She seems to have some real prejudices and when you see that she and Obama attended that church with Rev. Wright for 20 YEARS, you have to wonder if she and Obama share his views of the US (Rev. Wright's)?

Obama has to understand that there are going to be attacks against him and her and this comes with the terrority. If he can't take these criticisms at this stage, how in the world would he ever stand to be President?

He's "not ready for prime-time," and he doesn't have enough experience to be President.

Ryan   July 17th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

Seriously, I think that everyone needs to let the wives of the candidates be. I don't care about either as far as politics go. I am voting for a PRESIDENT, NOT a first lady. The media is purposely trying to turn Americans away from the crucial issues surrounding this campaign with this constant coverage of which wife did and said what. And unfortunately too many people are getting suckered into it. Enough is enough. Come on people, lets focus on the issues that are important. Not what Mrs. McCain or Mrs. Obama are up to.

Jannie W.   July 17th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

Most of the negative comments about Michelle stem from overt racism. This is an educated woman with a beautiful family.

Why are men so threatened by a strong first lady? ie: Hillary and Michelle?

Any woman would be proud to have thier husband stand up for them.

Republican for Obama   July 17th, 2008 12:18 pm ET

Not caring for someone is a personal choice everyone makes and that is fine but attacking someone you don't care for is disrespectful. Her comments were taken out of context as happens to most anyone these days. Are people of this country so involved and busy that they must be spoon fed snippets of a conversation and not read the whole thing themselves.

I don't care for McCain but he is subject to the same sound bites. They are disingenuous and a disservice to the person speaking. Get informed people and do your research if you choose to disagree with someone and for God's sake we can disagree and do it respectfully.

My opinion is that Michelle is intelligent, beautiful and honest. Children are a true reflection of the parents and theirs are wonderful.

Let's compare the wives, shall we?

Michelle Obama – Princeton University and Harvard Law School. Worked for the University of Chicago and U of C. Hospital. Worked for Mayor Daley of Chicago. Earned her stripes!

Cindy McCain – USC, bachelors and masters in education and a former USC cheerleader, and heiress to the Hensley Distributution fortune. Had herstripes handed to her.

The Right-Wing is justified in being scared of Michelle Obama. They loathe her because she's not a Stepford-wife like Cindy McCain!

I am so sick and tired of Obama defending Michelle from the big bad media.

Most of the times she put her own words into play. I know that Obama asked her before he ran if she could handle all the garbage that arises in a run for the presidentancy. If she didn't feel she could handle it….that was the time to say so.

As long as she continues to be a spokesperson, than she and her words are fair game.

Senator Obama, if you are whining now, think of what it will be like if you should actually become President! Think about all the nasty things said by the media and Democrats about our President and wonder how his family and wife found the intestional fortitude to deal with it! Think about former President Carter and what was said about not only him, but his whole family! Think about former President Johnson and what the media and people said about him and his whole family. If you are too young to remember all the hype about our former Presidents and their families first hand, then you better read more instead of talking so much.

You better toughen up Senator because this is nothing compared to what is to come if you are elected President and you don't follow through with half of the wrongs you promised to right and if your wife keeps inserting her foot into her mouth! And who are you that you and your wife should be exempt from ugly comments?

If you don't want to be criticized…then you do nothing and say nothing…play like you are dead!

Linda31   July 17th, 2008 12:15 pm ET

Michelle's speech in Los Angeles was what made me take a second look at Obama.

Mike   July 17th, 2008 12:15 pm ET

She gets herself in a pickle. Speaking of pickles google pickle and Michelle Obama and see another pickle she was in long ago.

Then think about those statements about how she had a hard time paying for her student loan from Harvard. Think you will have a hard time believing it after you see the pickle story and the $300,000 a year raise she got the day Obama became senator. Obama must have appreciated the hospital that employed Michelle as VP there because he soon after earmarked $1,000,000 to them.

Poor, poor people. Bet Michelle's brother who went to Princeton paid for his loans easily.

I know most people sure can put their kids through Harvard and Princeton.

And yes, his wife DID make the statement that she "for the 1st time she is is proud of this country" during the 1st speech of that day and it was not until the 2nd speech of the day did she add the word "really", and she stumbled all over it like shre "really" didn't want to say it.

If you don't believe me the LISTEN to BOTH speeches.

LGriff   July 17th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

FOX news and other conservative media can't find anything else to talk about, so they just throw any kind of negativity out there. I'm just glad that the Obama's are standing up to this and not letting it intimidate them. That is what the right wing people are wanting to happen and they are not fearing or buying into any of it. My inspiring words for the Obama's when i actually start following the campaign (in February 08) were: Have faith, be strong and stay positive and that is just what they are doing……. and when he takes office in Jan 09, all the conservatives can say, DANG, all this for nothing. HA HA HA!!!!!!

Obama 08/2012!!!!
Michelle first lady 08?2012!!!!!!!!

Michael "C" Lorton, Virginia   July 17th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

Just proves that "Rust consumes iron and envy will consume itself."

Patricia   July 17th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Michelle is another power hungry woman, i.e. Hillary Clinton!

Ron   July 17th, 2008 12:11 pm ET

Michelle gives off the impression of a very bitter person. Someone this fortunate and who has reaped the rewards of being born an American to this incredible extent needs not be so bitter.

MB   July 17th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

“I don’t have a thick skin when it comes to criticism of my wife,” Obama admitted.
Who does Obama? Unless you are John MC who called his wife the c word in public and has the nerve to ask why Chelsea Clinton was so ugly when she was 18.

Obama/ Clinton 2008

Toot   July 17th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

Boo hoo something else to cry about.
You are in the media…get over it!!

cynthia   July 17th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

the attacks on obama and wife have been unfair and i don't really like his policies but i have to say both obama and mccain are good candidates for their party…both are basic good men – there is no reason for anyone to "HATE" these men….I have never seen Obama or Michelle be hateful or ugly to anyone in the media – neither the McCains – i agree that the media is making it ugly and it is a joint effort on conservative media to paint Michelle as the "ANGRY BLACK WOMAN" when we can't even pinpoint a place where she has actually portrayed that stereotype….i also want to say that I applaud John McCain for speaking at the NAACP convention and the Urban League – it take guts and it was a great speech – bottom line just choose the candidate with the policies you agree with stop all this I hate obama and I hate mccain crap…it is stupid

larry buchas   July 17th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

The attack dogs have made this country worse off. They resort to anything, including lies, to win elections.

Remember what Bush's rats did to McCain in 2000? Sickening sewer rats, all of them!

McCain08   July 17th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Obama – where is your backbone. Cindy McCain gets attacked all the time but John has to just suck it up as part of the campagne smears (yes, Dems are just as bad at the smears as the GOP).

Michelle is on-limits as she parades herself on TV campagning for you. She has too much to say so that, i'm afraid, makes her very open to attacks.

Carol   July 17th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Best bet for him…………. keep her OUT of the picture.

We've seen her real personality – we don't like her . Now the campaign has announced that they are trying to give her a make-over to make her less abrasive and annoying.

Anything she does now will seem phony – it just won't work. Even in the interview with her and the kids. Her hair and her clothes were completely different than what we've seen before. Obviously, she was told what to wear and what to say to appear more likeable.

At least Cindy has been consistently phony and plastic from the beginning. We can rely on the fact that she is genuinely fake :-)

Kevin   July 17th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

I blame Michelle Obama. I have witnessed with my own eyes her views including a particularly nasty peace of venom about Hillary Clinton which I will never forget.

Linda from Prescott AZ   July 17th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

I agree with Senator Obama.

Marjorie   July 17th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

You have GOT to be kidding me!

This is horrendous.

This 'man' is such a whiner and victim of anything that goes wrong in his campaign.

I am so glad America is smart enough not to vote for this miserable failure.

Brian   July 17th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

She's fair game, and if she cannot take it then don't let her out of the house!

cathy smithson   July 17th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Oh please! This is the big leagues, get used to it or get out of the arena and let the real men -and woment – battle it out ! And what was the comment about driving up the negatives – sounds like his motivations are not in regard to protecting his wife and family but to make sure the "negatives" of his campaign do not rise: quote – "that’ll drive up your negatives". Something is wrong here and the American people need to take the blinders off. This man is the ultimate politician, all style no real substance. I am truly afraid for the country come January if this man is elected.

Catherine   July 17th, 2008 12:09 pm ET

Oh, he's whining again. Always whining, complaining, and saying the opposite of what he said the day before.

Could it be that Mrs. BHO brought on any criticism herself with her big mouth? She's happiest when her big mouth is flapping.

Don't pin this on the media.

Chanda-Cincinnati   July 17th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

OH Lord CNNN You are really giving the blood thirsty a platform today aren't you!!!!! Before it even starts, take all your non-patriotic bullcrap and shove it!!! She is a strong , intelligent, sophisticated, woman, and the future first lady of the US. What is ironic to me, and lost on the "Still for Hill" supporters, is the media has been going after Michelle in the same manner they went after Hillary in 1992. God forbid we should have a first lady who does not want to be simply a showpiece on the president's arm.

I am sure an adulterous, thieving, pill popper would make a better role model for the young women in this country…right? After all, Cindy has ALWAYS been REALLY proud of her country right.?

cherrystrawberry   July 17th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

why dont you report that McCain only stated that wives should be off limits when some news agencys started reporting on cindy's drug use.

whiner   July 17th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

the conservative media slanders and lies until people lose interest in the political process.wont work this time ,because less and less people are watching fox or reading newspapers.we get our news through cyber-space now ,so we can mute the conservative smear attempts,at any time, and go to unbiased websites like cnn, msnbc, huff post ,politico etc.people keep saying 'it's the economy ,stupid".well,i think it's the "internets, stupid",in this year's election, which means we are no longer "stupid",we are well informed. obama 4 8 years!

STILL FOR HILL   July 17th, 2008 12:08 pm ET

Maybe Michelle should shut her trap if she doesn't want to be criticized!

I'm proud to be an American every day… So is my family. My Great Uncle served in Korea and my brother did 5 years in the Marines.

Go America! If you are not a patriot, don't run for President!

Sam   July 17th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

Barack's right! All you cowards who write in to criticize Barack & his wife will never have the balls to say it in the face of his supporters.
Hannity is a coward.
Barack is the real deal both in office & on the street.

Billy in NJ   July 17th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

If you are going to talk about wives and if they are fair game or not then we should learn more about McCain's wives. No not the millionaire heiress Cindy but the one that he divorced for her. I am interested!

Cynthia   July 17th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

I agree that wives should be left out of it. When the brouhaha came out about Michelle's misunderstood statement, Cindy was one of the first one to make a comment and she should have not said anything. I know CIndy doesn't want the people to start chiming in on her because I'm sure it could get real ugly.

IQ   July 17th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

DONT WORRY THESE CLOWN LIKE SEAN,LOU DOBBS AND THE CHUBBY GUY ON CABLE WILL GET THEIRS SOON WHEN HE BECOMES PRESIDENT. THESE RICH PUNKS HIDE BEHIND THE MEDIA AND THE LAW. JUST MOUTH AND NOTHING ELSE .

Deb, Allentown, PA   July 17th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

He's right. I'm still amazed that the conservative press attacked Michelle when there are plenty of skeletons to be unveiled in the Cindy closet.

Can we please just focus on the issues? And for those of you that say BO does not have a coherent plan in place, that all he does is make speeches, please take the time to visit his website and read his positions.

After you've done that, if you disagree, then you are entitled to your opinion. But before then, you sound like my kids when they're faced with an unknown food….

"But Mom, I hate that." And my response, "You've never had it before; how will you know if you like it if you don't try it?"

Grow up.

Rick in Oregon   July 17th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

The conservative (read corporate) media do not have the guts to go after Cindy McCain. She controls too much of their money. If they actually took a look at her, they would see that she is a mess. Seriously, a doped up, plastic surgery, fake that epitomizes the illusions that the right like to project.

unions are not stupid   July 17th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

that is the biggest problem they don't even know who she is and yet they feel they have a right to judge and convict her at every chance and these are suposed to be christian guess they forgot "judge not yet ye be judged" hum you would think these conservative people would find these attacks as empty and dirty as the rest of us.

Serviceman   July 17th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

Wait ….1 ….2 ..3, the response's from the creatures of emotion, the PUMA's

No logic will enter!!!

Unify & Vote Big   July 17th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

Michelle Obama is like a breath of fresh air and will make a wonderful first lady. She is more representative of 'real' American than any other spouse that has been to the White House.

CL OT   July 17th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

When you say the things that she has said the real media and the american people will come down you. She created her own problems.

katiec   July 17th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

Even though the public is thoroughly disgusted with the biased
reporting of the media, AP they ignore us and continue to
bash Obama and family and glorify mccain.
They lie, distort, ignore facts, sensationalize anything and
everything that will get them attention. Heaven forbid they
report on policies, truths and facts or at least make an attempt
to be fair.
They are owned by big corporations so what can we expect.
The republicans have always been their sugar daddies.
The AP now has Murdock on their board of directors so
what does that tell you??
They do not give us enough credit for intelligence and the
ability to see through their total disregard of integrity.
They cnnot railroad the American voters.

Dwe5050   July 17th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

kathy in ohio,

………..but he just raised $52m in june, what do you wanna do about that?

tojopa   July 17th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

issues, fox, issues. wives are not issues

NC4Obama   July 17th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Well you really can't expect anything more from them.

bert   July 17th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

Another problem with concervative media, is the fact that they are so blindly ready to cut off their nose in spite of their face. Obama, is the stongest, smartest and the most well rounded candidate in the race and we should rally around and behind him so that he could follow through on what he envisage and deliver. Besides, Mclame can't even log on or send or recieve emails. What's up with that?

arc, Lugano CH   July 17th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

The conservative media attack on Michelle Obama is only proof that Senator Obama and his wife are doing something right.

The conservative media chased after President and Hillary Clinton for 8 years-yet never came up with anything very substantial. Sure, they caught a few minnows using a whale harpoon.

Kevin Leo (Jonesboro, GA)   July 17th, 2008 12:05 pm ET

I would think that McCain and his conservative allies would want to avoid the discussion about the candidates' spouses given Cindy McCain's prescription drug abuse and the old stories of McCain's extramarrital affairs with his first wife. Last time I checked, Michelle has not been involved in any type of garbage like this.

Sharon   July 17th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Oh my here we go again blaming everyone else. He is just like his supporters. Who does he blame for being in a hate America church for 20 years.

ANGIE   July 17th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

FOX NEWS THEY ARE THE WORST NEWSCAST ON TV BECAUSE OF THEM AND THIER TRASHY NEWS REPORTERS NOT TO MENTION RUSH LIMBAUGH FOX NEWS SHOULD BE CANCELLED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sue, Greensboro, NC   July 17th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

I'd like to know first of all what problems she has created for herself. Then I would like someone to explain how it is that a person is REQUIRED to be "proud" of their country. I have never been especially proud of this country. Read a little American history, people. There is little to be proud of.

Jesse, Burnsville, MN   July 17th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Olivia,

Like Obama said, people are afraid to say what you said to their face or have to do it anonymously.

Why didn't you include your last name and city where you live? Are you afraid that maybe you would be subject to the same rediculous treatment?

A Democrat No More   July 17th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

The blame game continues………I blame the media for creating a Teflon shield around Obama.

Safety & Comfort   July 17th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

What has the conservative media done, besides draw a picture of her with a machine-gun and a flag burning. Oh, wait, that was someone else.

Griff   July 17th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

You must be joking! She is your wife. Period!!! If you, are not that much… Don't glorify her either…. She is just a Black Woman… No more and no Less….

Farrell, Houston, Tx   July 17th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

Michelle is a woman of character. She's intelligent, educated, loves her country, and has the family values we expect in a First Lady.

Voter   July 17th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

She invited the attacks on herself. Her pessimistic view of the United States of America is not fitting a First Lady. This position shouid be held by someone who has been proud of her country her whole life, not just when her husband started doing well. The First Lady should be the type of person whose eyes well up with tears when the national anthem begins, not a person who has an incredibly negative view of the greatest country the world has ever known. I know that many who read the post I am writing right now will say that the remarks were taken out of context, etc. If she had not said similar things on numerous occasions while stumping for her husband, perhaps the people who disagree would have a valid point.

MD in GA   July 17th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

I suppose some folks will say that the Senator has no right to feel this way about his wife. Although I'm sure if it was your spouse you would feel the same way or at least YOU SHOULD.

Had President Clinton been more concerned about his spouse, maybe some of the things that happened wouldn't have. He should have protected her more and he didn't.

I guarantee George W. would bring the rath of the Gods down on anybody who says a harmful word about Laura and she (in her own way) has been a spokes person for this administration.

I say we leave Michelle alone or be prepared for someone to attack Cindy. Both are the wrong things to do.

R.I.F.   July 17th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

kathy in ohio July 17th, 2008 11:57 am ET

Oh really? Then why is it that McCain pretty much said the same thing twice and hasn't incurred any damage?

Tom in S.A.   July 17th, 2008 12:02 pm ET

So they repeated what she said and that is an attack? She did say those things so what's the big deal about reporting (not attacking) it.

Heather   July 17th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

That's a real man right there. Any woman would be lucky to have a husband who stood up for her like that. He loves his wife, plain and simple. Stop making it more than it is.

Peter of Oregon   July 17th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

Now the conservative Fox media is focusing on milking the Jackson story for all its worth. He gave them some good material that they'll share with the public slowly, piece by piece to try and kill his career and hopefully hurt Barack Obama along the way.

Why not share with the public the entire off-air Jackson clips Fox? Instead of giving us a little bit at a time over the course of a few weeks? You and other media outlets like you represent the lowest form of neo-sensationalist, ultra-conservative, tabloid journalism.

Letha, SD   July 17th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

More sniveling and whining by O' Whiny. It's always someone picking on him or his sidekick!

Abbey   July 17th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

Better get used to it Barry if you plan to serve two terms as POTUS. I notice you weren't offended at all when Michelle, in all her honesty ,blasted the Clintons, questioned HRC's "tone" and wasn't sure if she was proud of the US. Suck it up and deal with it.

Abby   July 17th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

Michele is such an amazing women. By looking at their girls, she’s obviously a great mother, brilliant and graceful/beutiful. Anyone who uses that one gaffe where they tend to omit the word ‘really’ when she was talking about being 'really' proud of POLITICS for the first time, is looking for a reason to hate her. I’m very proud of her.

Delaware Votes 2008   July 17th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

This is nothing new form the right they will attack whomever is in there way. Its sick. There hasn't been any real reporting from the conservatives since Obama the nominee. Its been a whole bunch of ranting and raving about church and Jessie Jackson. The fact is no one from the left is attacking Mrs. McCain spending habits or the fact she did drugs. No one even ask why the loving couple still files separate tax returns. I don't know but GIVE THE FACTS. STOP WITH THIS BULL

tanner, ca   July 17th, 2008 11:58 am ET

Nice headlines. The US is possibly changing direction in its relationship with IRAN by meeting with diplomats in Switzerland, but all we get here are headlines on Obama's bankroll, gym practices and wife.

Way to have your priorities set CNN.

Peter of Oregon   July 17th, 2008 11:58 am ET

He's 100% on target. Fox led the way in reporting the "news", and CNN and the other media outlets followed lock step in line. Pretty much the same way they did when we justified going to war in Iraq.

kathy in ohio   July 17th, 2008 11:57 am ET

boy he loves to blame everyone else for what his wife, pastor, and friends say. she created her own promblems get over it obama

R.I.F.   July 17th, 2008 11:57 am ET

“I don’t have a thick skin when it comes to criticism of my wife,” Obama admitted. “The problem is that rarely do these folks have the guts to say it to your face.”

Perfect statement. No man should have a thick skin when it comes to attacks on their wife. I also dare Hannity, O'Reilly, Rush, or any of the talking heads on Fix News to say waht they've been saying about Michelle right to Obama's face. All these guys do is hide behind their little mics and talk trash all day to an audience that embraces their crap.

john   July 17th, 2008 11:56 am ET

SUCK IT UP AND STOP WHINING!!!!!!

it you want to be president you have to have a thick skin – i dont want a whiner in the white house.

Olivia   July 17th, 2008 11:56 am ET

Obama should understand that some just dont like Michelle. Just like some don't like him. I don't care much for either. The worse of two? Hands down Michelle.

Helene   July 17th, 2008 11:56 am ET

I love Michelle. She is a real woman, smart, articulate, beautiful. She has everything to make a splendid First Lady. Fox News, keep your Stepford wives, they suck !

Independent-woman-4-Obama   July 17th, 2008 11:53 am ET

Are we surprised? The conservatives are scared, scared that we have figured out how they have nearly bankrupted our nation with $10 TRILLION IN NATIONAL DEBT; scared that we are angered at the money spent on the war in Iraq…….. $1.38 BILLION A DAY! AND $650 BILLION A YEAR!

So……. naturally they will do and say anything against Sen. Obama and his wife, Michelle. Of course, they are free to say what they want……. and WE ARE FEAR TO THROW THEM OUT OF OFFICE!

Ted   July 17th, 2008 11:51 am ET

Well DUH! Although this time, they're half-right. Worked for a healthcare corp, that's a bad sign.
