From
Gas prices are on the rise.
Gas prices are on the rise.

(CNN)–It’s impossible these days to put the nozzle of a gas pump into your car without wondering just how deeply into our wallets the attached hose goes. With each increasingly precious drop of fuel, it seems, we are sucking the life out of the engine of the American economy. How serious might it get? Listen to the words of Congressman John Peterson (R-Pennsylvania), who says the crisis over oil prices “is more important and threatening to America’s future than terrorism.”

I asked the Congressman about that on today’s American Morning program. He contends that high oil prices are destroying the middle class and that there is no urgency in Washington to do anything about it. In much the same way that the early warning signs about Al-Qaeda were ignored while terrorists infiltrated American society, Peterson believes elected officials are standing by as the insidious effects of rising oil prices are eroding the very foundation of our prosperity. And in the same way that America launched a global war on terror, Peterson believes a similar mobilization effort must be taken to drastically reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign oil.

Many people have talked about the need for the energy equivalent of a “moon-shot,” or Manhattan Project-style effort to render the fossil fuel-based economy obsolete. While nothing of the sort has so far happened, Peterson is hoping to build a bi-partisan coalition in the House to at least take some kind of action. This morning, he talked to me about tax breaks to help Americans become more energy efficient (to get rid of old cars and old furnaces), increased funding for renewable fuels and a new push to tap vast reserves of shale oil in the west.

And – somewhat surprising for a Republican – he doesn’t want to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. He feels it’s politically radioactive, so why bother wasting time fighting that battle?

A softer target for Peterson is the expansion of offshore drilling – and on this point, he has a preacher’s zeal for proselytization. He has been pushing offshore exploration for 10 years, and feels – with pressure mounting on members of Congress to do something about oil prices – the time is ripe to act. He brushes aside Barack Obama’s arguments that it will be seven years – at least – before a drop of offshore oil drives anyone to work. “If we say close to where there’s current production,” he says, “we can have energy in a couple of years.”

His prime place to start? Next to the 27 “grandfathered” platforms off the coast of California. How well would that go over in the Golden State? Remember that scene from Total Recall where Arnold Schwarzenegger’s head is about to explode in the thin Martian atmosphere?

Peterson insists we “need a war on energy” and that he is close to forging a bi-partisan consensus on a number of issues to help secure America’s energy independence. But with an expansion of offshore drilling as the centerpiece of any proposal, Peterson’s Global War On Oil Prices may never make it through the vicious fight in Congress.

Well thanks guys, can we have another ...Thats another 4 years without a republican held whitehouse of course. Let's get this right
oil men and Condaleeza in the whitehouse we get what we voted for.

Oil companies make deals for Iraqi oil once they have secured that side of the world. Now they want to come back to the U.S. and pillage our land. Talk about preparing for your own financial future, screw the american people, when theres money to be made!! Will this insane money hungry mentality ever slow down. Americans gouging Americans who's really the enemy? Change is a must not McSame

In reality this shouldn't be a political issue but it is. Why? Because lobbyist and big business infiltrate and buy the goverment. That's the only reason we're still in bed with big oil. The facts indicate that there is no way we can drill enough oil from our land and waters to supply domestic demand. The facts also suggest that we can't access this oil in time to impact prices for 10 years and then the amount of oil we get will be insufficient to make any difference. Why then is this solution being proposed?

The war on terrorism is the same thing as the war on oil. If oil wasn't in the Middle East the USA would have no interest in the Middle East. It's naive to think the terrorism is simply about religion. It's about power, Oil is Power. If we eliminate our dependence on oil we significantly reduce if not eliminate the threat of terrorism.

It is extremely foolish and ignorant to believe we can simply drill more oil and solve the problem. Yes we will still need oil- we will always need oil. There should be no hurry to drill it all up. Americans have to accept the reality that the world has changed and we have to change with it.

This issue exposes a major Democrat flaw...the Democrats are not about helping the American people...they are about keeping the American people dependant on goverment. If you cannot see this then you are too far gone. Go John McCain, I can trust you.

ax breaks to help Americans become more energy efficient (to get rid of old cars

This is part of the problem... it uses more energy and resources to build the new cars than it would if the old cars were just kept on the road and serviced somewhat regularly. We consume and consume some more, buying "green" and all this BS, but we think nothing of all the waste that is produced when we throw out the old stuff. Keep on consuming America!!!

Anyone with an IQ above 60 should realize that high energy and food prices, along with a rapidly crashing dollar are much, much greater threats than every terrorist organization in the world, combined.

The economy as a whole is not shrinking, people are still spending their ever-weakening dollars. Unfortunately, instead of clothing, appliances, new cars, home remodeling, jewelry, shoes, etc., all of the money is being funneled into gas, food & healthcare.

Probably drilling is a strategy for McCain. He does not understand it is the worst tactics to solve the current fuel price problems.

One of the posters here has shown me the light! He (or she) wrote:

"What is fueling the Mars rover? answer: technology the oil co's don't want us to have."

Why didn't I realize that is Obama's secret plan to eliminate our dependence on foreign oil? How silly of me! After all, the cost of the two Mars Rovers was only $820 million. So Obama will need only $420 million in taxpayer funds to replace my old gas-guzzler.

And the jobs created by making each of us our own personal Mars Rover will likely be high-paying "green" jobs – so everybody wins!

I sure hope my Rover has cup-holders, otherwise I might have to vote for McCain.

Don Colony14Author, Mt Prospect, IL   July 17th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

Inasmuch as there seem to be two sides to this issue and they will likely never agree, let's at least agree to a cease-fire. Here are the conditions:

Those of us who would like to drill for oil offshore and in AWNR will agree NOT to do so, provided that those of you who opposed to the drilling immediately stop depending on oil. That shouldn't be difficult; all you have to do is avoid products made from petroleum: gasoline, kerosene, heating oil, plastics, fertilizers, cosmetics, synthetics, rock concert fireworks, automobile dashboards and other auto parts, toys, waterproofing, PCs, CDs, DVDs, iPods, etc. (A full product list is being prepared; please be patient as it will be quite long.)

The oil saved from your avoidance of those products should be enough for the rest of us.

P.S. Please keep us posted on Obama's progress in developing alternate sources of gasoline, kerosene, heating oil, plastics, fertilizers, cosmetics, synthetics, rock concert fireworks, automobile dashboards and other auto parts, toys, waterproofing, PCs, CDs, DVDs, iPods, etc.

Good luck!

Its time for an energy policy that is HUGE! We might have to tighten our belts a bit, but we need to become energy independent within 20 years. We can do it, we can put money into cellulosic and algae ethanol or oil, solar and wind, even wave machines, CNG, LPG cars, and plug ins.

I believe that the only way we are going to escape being at the mercy of the oil producers is to become independent. And Please, don't believe we will get anything out of offshore drilling (Guess which Bush owns the leases?), it will take years and years to get any oil out of them. However, Montana and Wyoming and western Colorado have some really empty spaces out there, sitting over oil reserves. Safe Nuclear, we can do it. There is no reason to continue giving all of our money to OPEC for oil, and our money to China for everything else.

America- Independent by 2028!

WHY do so many of you still speed and buy gas guzzlers? What's the rush? We all end up at the same finish line.

WE WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO CONTROL OIL PRICES EVER AGAIN UNLESS WE CAN DEVELOP AN ALTERNATIVE SOURCE. IN THE MEANTIME WE ARE LOSING ALL OUR CAR MANUFACTURERS TO FOREIGN NATIONS. AMERICA IS COLLAPSING FROM WITHIN. WE SELECT THE WRONG LEADERS FROM PRESIDENT DOWN THROUGH THE STATE REPRESENTATIVES. THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT RUN FOR THESE POSITIONS DON'T CARE ABOUT US AS A PEOPLE. Holy cow a member of Congress that actually understands how serious this situation is. I sometimes think both the right and the left would like to see another depression so they can blame it on each other. If we don't do something to lower energy prices soon this will be the biggest disaster this country has ever seen. Everything should be on the table Solar, Wind, Nuclear, Lower speed limits and Drilling. If our government does not act, blaming it on the other party later will not help the country!

What about our oil "reserve" in Iraq? With the US putting $3trillion into helping Iraq out I would think we are owed a little from Iraq's oil reserves. Wasn't that what Wolfowitz told us??? And we wouldn't have to wait decades to get the oil!

mfelder   July 17th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Oil drilling would probably be a good idea if we didn't have 2 oil men in the white house who would benefit from this venture. It bother's me that we will continue to line the pockets of these 2 crooks, bush and Cheney. I say between alternative fuel and drilling for oil they both will take the same amount of time. Let's get serious about alternative fuels. Oil drilling at this moment will do nothing to bring the cost of oil down today. Even if we got to the point where we can produce oil in this country, it will not be enough to make a dent in the amount of oil that we get from the middle east. They can easily reduce the amount of oil that we get from them and continue to drive the prices up. We will still need to depend on them for the bulk of our oil resources. Unless we are saying to the middle east that we no longer need their services and we will drill for oil and use are reserve, it is pointless to drill for oil.

All this talk doesn't matter. The Bilderberg's met in Chantilly, VA last month and they are the real deciders of how things are going. It was their idea to move towards $200 a barrel for oil last year and we see where we are at. Just depends what they decided. It ends up happening. They also have probably already decided who McCain and Obama's running mates will be. Did you think they make that choice....ha! These guys are all bought and paid for and march in line. We have enough oil in our emergency reserves to power this country into renewable sources. It would only cost us 20 billion dollars to put up high altitute wind farms to supply energy for the entire country. The Arizona desert receives enough energy in 1 hour to power the country for an entire year. And we still have geothermal, water and nuclear power. We have the means to lose our dependence on foreign oil.

Anyone who doesn't realize oil is the cause of all of our problems must be dumb deaf and blind.

Oil men are making so much money they bought the GOP. The GOP has a 10 trillion dollar debt for us, why would you vote for them???

Has anyone thought something criminal is going on here. I think the goveernment needs to do probes to find out why the gas prices are so high. I don't know that I believe that world consumption can have gone up so much to reflect these prices in the past few years. Where is the other money coming from that is paying for all the other oil that the world is using. What countries, could this be a false bidding war putting the price up? Like at auctions like ebay, where not supposed to, but a seller has something for sale and gets a friend to make false bids just to get the price up?
Or has it crossed anyones mind, this could have something to do with terrorism. Someone has figured out how to manipulate the market to hurt Americans. This is hurting people worse than the airline problems after 911. This is hurting everyones wallet. Our taxes for schools, so kids can ride the school buses, movies, restaurants, etc will hurt when you can only pay for enough gas to go to work and come home and there is no extra money left. It's been said the food banks are being over run with people because they are picking to put gas in their cars instead of buying food.
Someone better do some investigating and fast. I don't believe it's a simple supply and demand issue.

Billy J -Austin-Tx   July 17th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

We need oil. But we don't need as much as we use. We can drill here, or better yet, just open up all the capped wells in the U.S. I am in Texas and would love to see them re-open the wells here. It would be great for our economy. But be warned, it won't make the price go down. It Will get us off the saudis oil, and a lot of the canadian oil. But the price will not go down, till you get the speculators out. And there is no law telling the oil companies they have to sell the oil they get here to us. Only if it is economically avantageous will they do that. And if it can be refined cheaper or sold for more somewhere else .... guess what. So.. drilling is fine, in my backyard, but drilling because the oil companies say it is the answer is listening to the fox tell you how to protect your chickens.

Come on people get a fact check. If the USA doesn't buy oil from the oil producing countries, just think about what we would do the world market. Because GOD knows that they can't provide anything else but oil. When was the last time you bought sneakers, produce, electronics from Saudi Arabia? Somebody out there tell my why we can build a space station and shuttles but yet we can't come up with car that runs on something else instead of gas? My opinion is that the oil companies and investors would crap their pants if there was no longer a need for oil. I forgot which country uses the ocean waves to generate power for their people. The waves will always be there and no harm done to the environment at all....

If Washington is dragging its feet about the oil crisis, it's the Democratic congress, with their heels stubbornly planted in the dirt, that is putting the brakes on it all. Bottom line.....we WILL have to drill somewhere....or slide straight downhill as a country, and we've already started the descent.

New energy sources and non-petroleum vehicles will definitely have to be developed, but in the meantime....we need oil. And that means drilling. Oil industry experts say that would give us more oil in 2 to 5 years....and not the 10 years that naysayers are putting forth.

We do not need oil.

Inside of ten years, faster if we work harder on it, we could be completely independent of oil. Not twenty years, not thirty, ten. We have to make a concerted country-wide effort to beat oil, same as we made a concerted country-wide effort to win World War 2. We can take the existing technology that we already have, and implement it, and become independent from oil. Yeah, we will have to drive in the interim, but as things that use oil are decreased, the price of oil will go down.

Why don't we bring our military home from Iraq and instead use them and civilians stateside to build the infrastructure for solar, wind, hydro, tidal, and geothermal energy?

Why don't the automotive companies put their efforts towards developing electric cars?

Why don't we tell the oil companies to go peddle their drugs elsewhere?

We can do it. We don't have a choice.

We. Do. Not. Have. A. Choice.

We have to free ourselves from oil, or else, if nothing else, we're screwed when it runs out. Why is it so hard to get people to plan for the future?

There are far too many partisans out there. I get sick of hearing the same old stuff on these posts from people who think that only they have the answers and paint the other side as morons or the devil incarnate.

The fact is there are good ideas on all sides. I for one am looking for a leader who straddles the aisle and is seen as a moderate...that has the best interests of the majority of us in mind. In my opinion, McCain has the advantage in this quality. He has made his bones by reaching out to the Democrats on numerous issues (much to the consternation of his own party) while Obama, for all of his flowery rhetoric, has accomplished nothing of note in his legislative career and has one of the most polarizing (left leaning) voting records in Washington.

I like hearing what Peterson is saying....a multi-pronged approach to solving a problem that involves compromise and also appeals to the majority of folks in our nation. I would think that more citizens would like to see this approach being applied by the lawmakers in D.C.

In the meantime, tone down the hateful rhetoric on these posts. Being thoughtful and respectful makes more of an impression than all the hate-filled tirades that many of you are quick to post.

Because I know, I myself am planning on being here for the foreseeable future. As far as I know, we will NEED oil for at least the next few decades as new technology is being discovered. America literally runs on oil, so saying that we don't need to drill, and instead we need to just stop using it, is purely ignorance. Please, look at the big picture before saying we don't need oil.

if the US listened to Jimmy Carter 30 years ago, we would not be in this situation today – but no.....the country had to vote for Reagan, Bush and Bush 2 (who was given the election by the supreme court – he did not win it!!!) Then 60 million stupid Americans voted for him the second time!!! stupid people but stupid people in power, no less 2 oil men, what do you expect? the American people are their own worse enemy. God forbid they should actually pay attention.

We don't want cheaper oil. We don't want more oil. We don't want to drill for more oil. Cheaper oil means more gas being burned which means more pollution. It's like taking up chain smoking to lose weight. We need to become completely dependent from oil. We need it, we don't have a choice in this matter. We have got to use wind, solar, water, tidal, and geothermal for our energy. We have got to use electricity or even natural gas instead of gasoline for powering our vehicles. We need to eat healthy and exercise to solve our energy crisis, not take up chain smoking and self-cutting.

If we gain our independence from all oil, think of the benefits. No longer will we be slaves to the whims of lunatics and madmen all around the world, to Iran and to Venezuala and elsewhere. They're going to shut off the oil? Won't hurt us.

jim brady   July 17th, 2008 1:27 pm ET

I agree that getting rid of old furnaces would save a lot of energy. I have turned down the temperature on my gas hot water heater. But what would save a lot more energy (gas or electric) is to install on-demand hot water heaters that only work when a hot water valve is opened in a sink or tub. This way the water is not constantly being re-heated during the day, and, hence wasting a tremendous amount of energy. There are both gas and electric on-demand heaters available. I recently had my propane tank filled and it cost a whopping $1100. When it comes time to replace my gas water heater, I will most certainly install the electric on-demand heater because the cost of electricity is still regulated. In contrast, propane sellers are screwing consumers even worse than the gas stations.

Dave in Illinois   July 17th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

Somehow people need to see past their own prejudices and biases and realize that there is no magic bullet to solve the energy crisis tomorrow.

People along the coast have the images of oil covered beaches in their heads and say don't drill near me. People in other areas fight against wind farms and solar energy as eyesores on the beauty of their environment. People say no to nuclear plants based on 3 Mile Island scares and worries about transporting spent fuel. People picture black smog belching smokestacks and protest coal fired power plants. And on and on for every proposed solution.

The answer lies in a mix of all these energy production methods and conservation. People need to stop shouting no and start exploring how each can be done responsibly.

All Bush needs to do to DRASTICLY reduce the pice of oil is make it clear that any military option in Iran is off the table. I think that the only people who want us to go into iran are the neo cons and the puppet masters the Isrealis. You don't like 4 dollar gas, if we go into Iran it could be as hi as 12$, but I guess that I am just being a whinning, unpatreotic, sissy liberal.

Well Americans elected a momma's boy to be their President twice even though his history showed he basically bankrupted every venture mom and pop set him up with.

Oil was $28.00 a barrel before Bush was elected so how would supply and demand create such a huge increase in just 8 years? There is the answer and McCain isn't it.

democrat voting Republican in Nov.   July 17th, 2008 1:19 pm ET

Did anyone notice how much oil went down a barrel when President Bush lifted the executive order on oil drilling. He is pushing for congress to allow oil drilling in alaska and coastal waters. Imagine how much oil would go down if congress allowed this. They keep saying drilling oil will only help us 10 years from now but just the talk of drilling dropped the price almost $10 a barrel. Voting McCain in November and Have voted for a democratic US congressman for years. This time Alabama is planning on sending a republican to congress. First time ever in the 5th congressional district.

YO   July 17th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Conservation saves MUCH more than drilling could ever produce. Conservation kicks in immediately, not years from now, as drilling.

Kevin Leo (Jonesboro, GA)   July 17th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

The amazing thing to me that is lost in the he discussion of drilling in ANWR or additional offshore drilling is that the oil companies are not even fully tapping the areas that they have licenses for right now! They are currently drilling in less than 10% of the areas they have licenses for but want to jump into new areas.

Sarah, Northern Colorado   July 17th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

I swear, this decade is going to be remembered by one word – WAR. We've got a war on everything; a war on terror, a war on Iraq...now a war on energy. No wonder the world sees us as a warlike nation!

That said, I like what Roberts has to say. This is a great example of being united for the good of the people, rather than bipartisanship. I'd like to hear more of what this man has to say.

I have lived without a car for 6 1/2 years now. And, I've done it in Houston and in Austin – not exactly pedestrian oriented cities. I traded the expense of a car for strategically living close to work. Sure I'm still sucking from the oil teet – plastics, public transit, etc. – but not nearly as much as I used to. Say what you will but here's something to chew on: everytime you drive your car, you are enabling the oil and gas companies you bemoan to continue their ways.

bitter_in_pa   July 17th, 2008 12:53 pm ET

The promise of more oil by drilling offshore and in Alaska is just a way to distract from development of renewable solutions. Same old game. Most of that new domestic oil, if found, will just be sold to the highest bidder ... which will be China.

Testimony of Michael W. Masters
Managing Member / Portfolio Manager,Masters Capital Management, LLC
before the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs
United States Senate
May 20, 2008

You have asked the question “Are Institutional Investors contributing to food and energy price inflation?” And my unequivocal answer is “YES.” In this testimony I will explain that Institutional Investors are one of, if not the primary, factors affecting commodities
prices today.

YO   July 17th, 2008 12:50 pm ET

the United States, which has about 6 percent of the world's population and consumes about 25 percent of the world's oil production, cannot realistically drill its way out of the current energy crisis.

Kim   July 17th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

The reason for the high oil prices is that the speculators feel that either Bush or McBush will attack Iran, This will stop the flow of oil from the Persian Gulf causeing oil prices to skyrocket.

ran   July 17th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

How come the oil co's are not drilling on the vast areas they already have from the gov? or the fields already tapped and not pumping?

answer: that would increase supply and lower the price.

What is fueling the Mars rover?

answer: technology the oil co's don't want us to have.

How to get out of this mess?

answer: turn over all engery to the us gov.

1) Try convincing us residents to allow drilling near Santa Barbara (NO WAY, see 1970 spill)

2) Try doing it over the will of the people, and you will run into a brick wall known as "The Governator". Try pushing drilling down his throat lol.

Give up, you aint drilling in our backyard now, tomorrow or EVER.

oil prices is a mess because a lot of people elected to biggest, dumb oil family to run our country.

This is no coincidence that bush, cheney, and rumsfeld stands to gain from this. when will people open their eyes, they seem to glued shut.

MikeH   July 17th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Phil Graham is not mentioned anywhere in this article.

He is the originator of the 'Enron Loophole' that removes regulation of oil speculators allowing them to jack up oil market prices for maximum profit.

Put regulation back in place and oil prices will fall dramatically.

Since this article doesn't metion any of that, it's a diversionary article designed to distract the public away from one of the main causes of high oil prices today.

CNN, are for the American People (and people of the world), or are you a shill for the wealthy pigs destroying my beloved America?

Put Obama in the WH and following his alternative energy plans, you can put a sail atop your car and use wind power to get around. The Dem's energy plan is nothing but hot air anyways.

Native-Floridian   July 17th, 2008 12:38 pm ET

Congress needs to get off their back-side and do something about high gas prices. This is killing the Ameican people. Gas prices are up, food prices are up, power prices are up, etc, etc, and up , up and away. Do it all: drill for oil, wind, solar, and what ever it takes. JUST DO IT!!!! CONGRESS: Stop doing the studies, talking about it and fighting. JUST DO SOMETHING to bring relief to the American people.

If they do something, my next motto is going to be: Throw the bums out.

eric   July 17th, 2008 12:37 pm ET

Drilling for more oil is the dumbest thing we could possibly do. We are addicted to oil just like any other drug. If you're addicted to crack, and its scarcity is causing you problems, the answer is not more crack. The answer is to break your addiction entirely. More oil will just prolong our problems and make the country too complacent to do the investing it needs in renewables. With global demand continuing to rise, more drilling will only keep prices from rising as fast as they have. Prices will not come down. Come on people, stop being stupid and do the intelligent thing for once.

Bill from ALabama   July 17th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

It is absolutely necessary that America get "oil independent" from the middle-east. We can not keep sending those extreme amounts of money to the foreign countries that despise us....not to mention the adverse effect it has on our economy. We need to find alternative sources of energy for ecology reasons, also. It is time to take drastic measures! Measures to secure our ability to protect ourselves as a nation, without having to consider our dependence on imported energy. If America is to survive,we have to engage in technology of the future, dispite opposition from big businesses, and lobbiest.

But you know what? I think is about time that they start doing something. I'm not gonna lie but I'm upset that we have to be in this situation in order to REALLY care. What happen 1 year or 2 years ago??? Didn't they see it coming?? Because I did, that I can tell you. If you don't believe me, give me a lie detector test or psychology test or tell a psychic, either one is fine, LOL!!

At least they're doing something John. Plus, there's nothing like getting back on your government when they learn things the hard way.....or better yet just say, "I told you so"...

Democrats Unify & Vote Big   July 17th, 2008 12:28 pm ET

The bigger issue is the globe's addiction to oil and lucrative rewards that come from very profitable US Oil Companies. You can't tell me the America is so near the end of its supplies of oil that we will now have to exploit all of our coastlines in a last ditch effort to survive. Looks to me like US Oil is flexing its double-digit billion dollar profit muscles made last year through the Republican party.

The US Oil Company robbed America's economy blind last year. The people won't soon forget that!

Simple Drill Here Drill Now !!!!

According to the oil companies, if GOVERNMENT would get out of the way with all of their RED TAPE, more oil could be available in 6 months to 1 year.

Accordng to people in the know, the 68 million acres that the democRATs keep talking about HAVE been tested and there is little or no oil in those areas or it is extremely hard to get to.

China is currently drilling where OUR democratically led congress will NOT allow us to drill.

WAKE UP AMERICA !! before it is too late.
