Bill Clinton is ready to campaign for Obama.
Bill Clinton is ready to campaign for Obama.

(CNN) - He's ready.

Former President Bill Clinton said Thursday he's prepared to hit the campaign trail on behalf of Barack Obama as soon as the presumptive Democratic Presidential nominee asks him to.

"Whenever he asks - that is, we had a good talk, and he said he wanted me to campaign with him, and I said I was eager to do so," Clinton told reporters in New York Thursday. "He's busier than I am, with politics anyway, so I just told him that whenever he wanted to do it, I was ready.

"So it's basically on their timetable, he's got a lot of things to do between now and the convention," the former president added. "I'll do whatever I am asked to do, whenever I can do it."

Clinton had come under criticism from some in his party for his seemingly apathetic attitude towards Obama's presidential bid, even as Hillary Clinton enthusiastically endorsed the Illinois senator shortly after he captured the Democratic nomination. The former president and Obama reportedly did not speak for close to a month after the Democratic nomination race ended. Clinton was traveling abroad for a substantial part of that time.

Some reports suggested that Clinton remained upset with Obama's criticism of his administration over the course of the campaign, and the media's coverage of the race. But Terry McAuliffe, a longtime aide to the Clintons, dismissed those rumors late last month, saying "the man doesn't stay mad."

Speaking to reporters Thursday - at a press conference announcing a pricing agreement that he hopes increases the availability of malaria drugs - Clinton also wouldn't say what he thought his role should be at the party's convention next month.

"I have actually given no thought to it," he said.

"Let's not forget that Nancy and the Dem have had major power in Congress since 04. Oil and Gas are up 120%, as well as food, and others. The Dem have limited oil drilling and failed to have alt energy plans in this country for the last 30 year.

There is plenty of blame to go around. Now lets work in the problem of energy!!!"

LIES, LIES, LIES..... more Republican LIES! Dems have only had control since '06 and their control is NOT veto proof (not even filibuster proof in the Senate!) THEY can't get anything done because the Republicans won't let them!

Why are they asking Bill to campaign for Obama? Hillary would never ask Michelle to campaign for her.

Don't do it Bill Obama called you a racist!!!

Welcome back President Clinton. You are a true Democrat sir and I know that you love this country. I have always respected you and Hillary and your time in the White House. You did a wonderful job for this country and African Americans in particular. I hope and pray that we can take back the White House and I know that you and Hillary will do all that you can to get Senator Obama elected. The last thing we need is another Republican in the White House. I am still uncomfortable with Senator Obama and still have not decided whether or not I will vote for him. I was so hurt by the treatment of you and Hillary during the primaries. So do what you can and I will continue to listen. By the way, I will never vote for a Republican!!

Obama is going to love having Bill hang around the White House.

If Hillary is VP and Bill invites Obama to take a motorcade through Dallas,
Obama probably should decline.

R.S.-St. Paul   July 17th, 2008 6:54 pm ET

President Clinton knows a "backstabber" when he meets one, and he is just "playing the game" to get Hillary's debt paid off. I don't blame President Clinton because the Obama campaign not only demonized Hillary and tried to destroy her political career, they also demonized Mr. Clinton by calling him a racist. That will come back to haunt Obama; that under-handed unfounded allegation. Keep playing the game President Clinton, get all those Obama supporters to pay off Hillary's debts. I am truly enjoying the thought of that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Clintons had to stay out of the election as Obama established himself as the winner and the new leader of the Democratic party. If not, everyone would be calibrating their every inflection to see how enthusiatic they seem.

It also saved us from the constant crying by the PUMAS about Hillary and Bill!!

Bill also, like Jesse Jackson, needed to digest that a new generation is now making a move to take the reins.

>>How about Bill Clinton as our UN rep under an Obama presidency?

The man is loved internationally, if not domestically.>>

I think that would be the perfect job for him. He could also take the subway to his office every day too.

KE   July 17th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

Clinton should campaign while Obama is gone. It will be interesting. But I wonder how the media will cover Clinton campaigning for him.

But don’t forget, some Obama bloggers have been coming to pro-Hillary sites, and they are not shying away from using abusive language. I wonder if they are anybody from the Obama campaign we see on the television screen (They remind me of people who invite themselves to your house and tell you what they think wrong about you in your house).

Something is very wrong with this year’s primary race. The credibility of the US presidential elections seems to have gotten worse from bad. And the race is not over yet.

To:Ex-Republican for Obama

I am glad that you are in the Obama team...anyways...umm i wonder why you are an ex republican..could it be that your "republican" president that you voted for in 2000 was the worse president in recent history....AND YET you want to talked how bill was in bed during 9/11/....2001.. YEAH i also want u to get the facts straight...Bill left office in 2001...more specific ( 12:00 p.m Jan.20,2001) Also bush ignaguration..our "twin towers" tragedy happend in September 11,2001 gee...if i recall it was PRESIDENT BUSH that was slepping when ever all that tragedy happend...Mr. Ex-republican...Anyways...Its funny how america dramatically when from a decade that was calm, surplus(booming) economy, prosperity, to a decade that has a recession(bear market) economy, crime rate very high, gas..well we all know whats going on...So gee we need a democratic president like bill again...in the white house...Desperately...i am glad that obama is leading in all polls yeah its tight...but he is leading in the most important states...FL,MI,PN, OH..

.anyways Mr. Ex-republican you must know the changes this country needs and i am glad again that you are in obama team. but just dont slam the obvious Under president Bill clinton..America was great...and thats a fact ...You can read it on all history books....how America was on the 90s..

You hate Bill but most people love him and thank him, because they defitnetly know the difference between good and bad...90s Good 2001-2008 bad

Thank you Clintons

Obama 08

Joel   July 17th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

Impossible that BillyBoy can hit the trail for Obama.
Clinton can't talk about anything but himself. Just look at the mess he made for Hillary. It will be a total "Love Me, Not Him" show and Obama will be looking to get Bill off the stage any way that he can.

On second thought, maybe this is really a good idea.

Nate   July 17th, 2008 6:21 pm ET

Irma in North Carolina   July 17th, 2008 6:20 pm ET

Lets hope that Bill can talk some sense into these Hillary suporters who say they are going to vote for Mccain and if they do they will be getting four more years of Bush. They are acting so childish and stupid, it doesnt sound like they are suporters of Hillary to act this way. They should ask Hillary and Bill if they are voting for Mccain cause Hillary didnt win the primary. Hillary and Bill lets hope you can get through to these people for the sake of our country.

I have always liked President Clinton, and if anyone looks back to the years that he was in office, you would see that our country was doing really well, balance budget, surplus, economy was doing great.

Plus the fact that if Obama was to add Hillary to the ticket, there would be NO STOPPING them from winning in November.

President Clinton, Americans have been getting through some going through stages since you left Oval Office....Because you are very educated and educated people only will be able to handle US economy well.
Pot calling Kettle 'BLACK', McCain saying Barack is naive; l wonder whether he understands the word 'naive' or because he flew a failed mission in Vietnam and was shot down...how does that contribute to experience? How can Americans just be manupulated like that? Maybe Bill Clinton will try and open an AEC (Adult Education Centre) for some unknowledgable politicians in America.

To Lifelong Democrat:
I like and respect Hillary very much (and voted for her in February). But the way she handled her campaign later in spring, I was more and more moving in Obama's direction. Let's be honest: we have a young, energetic, VERY SMART! candidate who can inspire people (isn't this a requirement for real leader?). Also he managed his campaign brilliantly, which makes me believe he will manage administration as well and put the right people in the right place to do the job.
As to the role of Bill Clinton – he was a great president, can be the best adviser to Obama due to his experience and high standing in the world. But let's be honest, can you imagine Bill with Hillary in the White House again and not in the first role? Don't think so. Nevertheless, he should support Barak and help his campaign, same as Hillary. That's the only way to restore his legacy and help the country survive.

newbie pawns for Obama   July 17th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

Bill, why reward Obama's hateful race-baiting, ugly campaign strategy with you loyalty?

Obama encouraged his campaign and vitriolic supporters to trash and bash Hillary until she was forced out of the race by the DNC.

Why are you encouraging such undemocratic tactics?

Yes it is obama's time but i will go after anyone in this website that denies the fact that when bill was in power income for all people increases and minorities' home ownership rate went up.The guy is a democrat and it kills me to see that so called democrats denigrating in such horrible fashion. Would you trade any 23 millions real jobs in the 90s to the Mc donald's job that Bush created. One thing about this election it will come down to economics not national security. It worked in 2004 but it will not in 2008.All this hoopla about Biden will not work. The only real VP that can help Obama with real constituencies (not press made) is Hillary Clinton wheter you like it or not. Democracy is power of the people by the people and for the people. a clear majority of democrats wants her AS VP. So Mr obama acts as the true man you really is and do not destroy the Democratic Party.

First McCain said Obama was irresponsible for saying he would attack Al Queida in Pakistan if their was solid intelligence. Since calling Obama 'irresponsilbe' our miliarty has attacked Al Queida 4 times in Pakistan.

McCain calls Obama naive and reckless for wanting to set a timetable to get out of Iraq. Next thing you know the sovereign Iraq government demands we set a timetable.

McCain calls Obama reckless and an appeaser for saying he will sit down with leaders of countries unfriendly to the U.S. 3 months later the U.S. successfully appeases and negoitiates with N. Korea ('axis of evil') and they begin to dismantle their nuclear plants.

McCain and Bush call Obama an appeaser and irresponsible for saying he wants direct diplomacy with unfriendly countries rather than threats of war. Just yesterday the State Department announces they are sending a top level official to Iran to sit down and have direct talks.

Who has the judgement?

Brian   July 17th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Hillary is Bill's wife. If someone attacks Hillary of course he is going to go on the offensive. There was the emotion factor with Bill Clinton during Hillary's primary run.

Now that the primary is over, and the general has started. Bill can go out and campaign and fundraise for and or with Obama and he'll roll with the punches better in my opinion. The man is a political power house and people both Dem and GOP know it. The man can raise money, and he can really "woo" the voters.

Can't wait for him to out there though. He's an amazing speaker.

"The man doesn't stay mad?" What has Bill Clinton got to be mad about? He's the one who owes this country an apology. Such political savvy wasted on an arrogant and selfish man.

Mike - Texas   July 17th, 2008 4:56 pm ET

Let's see if Bill can torpedo Obama's campaign the way that he torpedoed Hillary's.

Nobama   July 17th, 2008 4:55 pm ET

I guess now we know that Hillary is going to be Obama's VP. I mean come on who can't tell me that the only way Bill would do this is if his wife is on the ticket. Bill's smarter then that, and so is Hillary. All of you whining about no Hillary for VP can shove it no one cares what you have to say. You are not that important. I personaly wouldn't care if he picked the current VP to be his running mate I am voting for Barr, and all of you should to. If you truely care about your country then you should be voting for Barr, he's the only one what will keep our country free. Obama will have us turn into a communist countrty, and McCain will bring about our downfall. Think of that if you support Obama you support communisum, if you support McCain you support our destruction.

Have a nice day

We are stuck and no Wmd's. 3 trillion dollars later still there. Mccain prediction 100 year war,

i will always love bill too. but we CANNOT give the neoCONs--like the moronic glen beck, limpbaugh, oreilly--ANY extra ammunition. you can guarantee they are absolutely giddy to their evil little cores about the prospect of attacking a clinton again!

we are all tired of the mean-spirited and greedy GOP, IT'S TIME FOR AMERICA TO BE UPBEAT, FORWARD-THINKING, BETTER EDUCATED, MOVING ON FROM OLD-FASHIONED FINITE OIL, EMBRACING RENEWABLE RESOURCES LIKE WIND AND SUN, TAKING THE POWER AWAY FROM JUNK LIKE FOX NOISE AND JUNK PEOPLE LIKE RUSH/GLEN/OREILLY/ETC....

LET'S MAKE AMERICA A WORLD LEADER AGAIN--INTELLECTUALLY, ENVIRONMENTALLY, HEALTH CARE FOR EVERYONE, GIVE OUR TROOPS AND THEIR FAMILIES THE EXCELLENT BENEFITS THEY HAVE EARNED AND DESERVE...

the loser GOP have fed on and stoked the anger and depression and frustration of all americans. and for the weak people, FOX etc. preys on their fears and insecurities and has created some really horrible, negative people.

anger and violence are a sign of WEAKNESS, not strength!!!!! there is NOTHING WRONG with being content and relatively happy, people!!! and we have SO MUCH to be grateful for for being lucky enough to have been born in this country!!! let's stop being a nation of angry, divisive, bigoted people.

Henry. What you said is foolish. I guess in YOUR eyes, the Clintons were horrible during the primary, and now all of a sudden since Obama is the nominee you see them differently? THEY HAVEN'T CHANGED.......the media and BO people tore them down for a year and you fell for it. I guess for you, the media's perception is reality.

Dems missed a great opportunity with Hillary. Too bad for us.

Sabrina   July 17th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

Henry, the only reason you like Bill now is that you want him to help your so called god. He has to help but I don't have too. My vote will go to McCain and to Hillary in 2012.

BITTERCHRISTIANCLINGINGTOGUN   July 17th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

Bad idea to have a really successful individual like former President Bill Clinton stumping for Obama. Seeing them together will only highlight Obama's inexperience and lack of qualifications. It will remind voters of everything Obama IS NOT and NEVER WILL BE.

I'm happy to have Bill on board. When Clinton lied, no one died, which is way more than can be said of the current thugs in office. They are worse than Nixon, who had the good sense to resign.

Let's get Obama elected and fix this country, starting with weaning it off the oil teat. Hillary, Bill, Al, Joe... all are welcome aboard. It's about us or them - the oil-pushers.

Puma it's not sexism that won't allow Obama to pick HRC. It's the fact that she is a completly corrupt politician with way to much baggage to be anything but a hinderance to his desire to change how things are done in Washington. The fact that she is going on trial for fraud out in California can't help her cause either. The fact that she hasn't already been in court for these charges is only because a judge appointed by Bill postponed the trial after the election can't help either. She won't be able to serve as V.P. from a prison cell. Just because she wears pantsuits and not a suit doesn't make her any less corrupt.

HEY JOE:

Nice try, but you obviously have no idea how presidents are elected in the US.

Obama will probably win in a landslide with over 300 electoral votes. He is winning ALL the 2004 Kerry states plus CO, NM, IA and OH. That alone makes him the next President.

He is also very competetive in VA, GA, NV, FL, ND, MT, NC...

But just keep pretending it's close if it makes you feel better. McCain was campaigning in NEBRASKA today. Nebraska? Get it?

For all the people who continue to cite Obama's comment about the primary campaigning in 57 states, y'all need to go back and listen to what he was talking about and put it context. Not only were there regular balloting votes happening, some states also included a caucus process. When he made that comment he was referring to the number "contests" (either ballot or caucus or BOTH) they had endured.

Remember, too, that Obama made that statement only ONCE. McCain has referred to the nonexistent Czechoslovakia THREE times in as many months–two of those times in this week alone!! Where are his advisors? Who is telling him about this very serious problem? Most important, why isn't he remembering this input from one day to the next??

Regarding "Biden Comes to Obama's Defence..."

Senator DeMint's attacks on our future President Obama are in the typical GOP fashion...point blame of failures on someone else. Pardon me but is not "President" Bush the Commander In Chief who is the top U.S. Leader for our Afghanistan campaign? If Senator DeMint and "President" Bush would like to cede this authority to our future President Obama now that's fine with me, and I beleive the majority of Americans as well. For the record, if it were not for our GOP lead invasion of Iraq our future President Obama may not have "needed to hold hearings" about Afghanistan. In other words our united military resources could possibly have acheived total military and (with other U.S. leaders) political victory in Afghanistan by now. Instead of holding meetings, our future President Obama is doing what he must to become President in order to demonstrate leadership to hopefully get out of the "dark ages" the GOP has created of our country over the last eight plus years.
