McCain said Obama's Senate record was more liberal than a self-described socialist's.

WARREN, Michigan (CNN) – John McCain on Thursday described Barack Obama’s Senate record as “more to the left” than Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont - an independent who caucuses with Democrats but has described himself as an “independent Democratic socialist.”

During his town hall meeting with voters in Kansas City yesterday, McCain said, “Senator Obama has the most extreme record of any member of the United States Senate.”

In an interview after the event, The Kansas City Star asked him to clarify the remark.

“His voting record … is more to the left than the announced socialist in the United States Senate, Bernie Sanders of Vermont,” McCain answered, according the paper.

Asked if he thought Obama was a socialist, McCain answered: “I don’t know. All I know is his voting record, and that’s what people usually judge their elected representatives by.”

When will Obama and the Democrats stop taking this crap? THAT is what I have been waiting for most of my adult life. For a Democrat with the stones to stand up and say 'NO MORE'!!! That's why they keep losing elections. If they can't and won't defend themselves, then how can they expect Billy six-pack to believe that they'll defend him?

Sherri   July 18th, 2008 11:45 am ET

Such nonsense. The politics of insult and divisivness are alive and kicking in the McCain camp. I truly believe that the American people have had enough of this type of politics. I know that I have.

Europe is socialist and they seem to be doing fine

David   July 18th, 2008 11:45 am ET

Yes he is. he may even lean to fascism, too. In Colorado Springs earlier this month he said he wanted a civilian national security force (see Hitler Youth) that would be as big as the military and funded as well. The military is 500,000 strong with a $439 billion budget. Where's he going to get that? And what will this group do? Spy on us? report us if we talk in favor of the Constitution???

Tony   July 18th, 2008 11:45 am ET

"Obama might be a socialist. And a terrorist. Er, um. He's probably a socialist terrorist. He's a scary black man. Boog-ah, boog-ah, boog-ah!!!"

Ugh.

John McCain has all the charisma of a glob of cottage cheese. And all the wit and insight of a...well, of a Republican.

This name calling is stupid!
A lot of the people who vote republican don't even know what a socialist is......for that matter they aren't even sure what a republican is anymore. They just know they don't want to vote for a African American. I wonder if they even know what a racist is?
Opps I forgot we are talking about that brand called the RNC.

Rosa Birmingham, AL   July 18th, 2008 11:44 am ET

You must be kidding me. First they try to say he is muslim then a terrorost now a socialist. Can't these people just talk about the issues and quit labeling everyone. How about this for a label for McCain: DANGEROUS. He is a corporate socialist, all the benefits go to a few private corporations but the risk is spread out to the taxpayer. Look at all the bank and mortgage company bailouts.

Will in Richmond, VA   July 18th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Why is it that any time someone asks him a hard question or one that he as not prepared for, he has no answer?

And by the way, I have no problem with each person being able to achieve to the heights of their goals and abilities. However, it is governments responsibility that each of those people starts from a level playing field.

Mo   July 18th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Hope you guys realize socialism is a variant of fascism– Hitler was one of the biggest proponents of socialism, along with Stalin, of course. Those two are very much the same. I don't want the governmnent to tell me how to spend my money or live my life!

Not to mention, government intervention is the reason for all of our economic woes. If the dollar were maintained strong, and inflation kept in check, oil and other commodities would be at a resonable price. Instead, it's printed like toilet paper to fund this stupid war in Iraq.

If only there were an alternative between Obama's socialist/fascist views and McCain's more of the same...

"Do you like social security – they you like "socialist" programs. If you mean is Obama that kind of socialist – maybe – but so is McCain. "

And... no... I don't like social security... We're going to owe $20 trillion dollars over then next decade or so. Let the toilet paper printing machine start printing "dollars" and let our economic woes continue...

monkeymaker   July 18th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Geez McCain. As far as we know you didn't eat human flesh in 'Nam either. Way to go with the unsubstantiated rumors. If this is all you can campaign with, you're more pathetic than I initially thought. And that's a lot! Way to swiftboat anyone in your way. Slander them all and let God sort them out, right?

What kind of idiot is seriously considering voting for this scumbag?

JD   July 18th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Hey, Obamanation, where exactly is the venomous "name calling" that you are so shrilly whining about? Mr. Cain saying that he doesn't know if Obama is a ModCom but he sure votes that way isn't exactly stinging rhetoric......it's just direct observation of the facts.

Gsamlal   July 18th, 2008 11:44 am ET

With all the experience with respect to foreign policy, security concerns, etc. If you combine President Bush, VP Cheny, Rumsfield and Senator McCain it is over 100 years in the the above mention. Did that extend experience the GOP is talking about prove the USA with the fore mention?

Senator Obama has a different process to bring back the USA back to it's standard of world leadership and exemplar..

We should not deny our selves of this change towards economic growth and regain our position as the world leader..

I am so sadden by Senator McCain, a man I have respected for decades.

I can't believe how far he has fallen from his beliefs and ideals. What is wrong with the people who run the Republican Party if a proud, honorable man like Senator McCain must sell himself out to secure the nomination and the party's "base'?

This behavior makes me want to cry. I guess the party has to hit rock bottom before it can rebuild.

Jerry, Florida   July 18th, 2008 11:43 am ET

Well, that's "Change We Can NOT Believe In" for you! When Senator Obama gets called on the carpet for his socialistic views, watch him flip-flop, as he normally does. Funny, at every turn he has critisized Senator McCain for his temper, yet, he seems to get his "gander" up over the most trivial issues/things. Particularly when people (voters) disagree with him.

American voters, is this whom we want for president? We don't need a rock star or someone with rock star status. We need someone who can turn our country around. Is Senator Obama this individual? I personally do not think so.

If anything, his politics/views and those of his misguided, bleeding heart supporters have caused our nation to be more divided than ever.

Is this what we want for our beloved America? Think!!!

Tony   July 18th, 2008 11:42 am ET

Good point, Capitalist. Bill gets, what, $300,000 for each speech? Why aren't you Democrats denouncing that as hideously greedy!!! Or is Bill not a "greed monger" as some of you have said.

It's about equity and fairness, people, NOT equality. You work harder, you should get more. You don't work as hard, you don't get as much. Show me ANY socialism based system that includes this and is a world leader. They're not. They instead have relegated themselves to the "relying on the rest of the world for innovation, etc." category. Hopefully you can at least understand why that bothers those of us who actually DO want to innovate, create, produce, etc. rather than sit around and get paid for it.

If you need major surgery, where do you go? Not to Cuba (MM give me a break!), nor Russia, nor Mexico. You come to the U.S. There's a reason for that. Try using your heads and figure out why.

Obama is too full of himself and out for self-promotion- THAT is what disqualifies him as a true leader.

True leaders are humble not cocky- they don't brag and boast. They don't think they are superior to others. They do not talk down to others in a preachy, self-serving, smug tone. They do not proclaim their own perfect judgement.

They do not mock and jeer other leaders. They do not resort to cheating, race-baiting, denigrating others in order to steal the nomiantion.

Obama does all those negative things.

That is why I will not vote for him.

Typical right-wing name-calling. This should bring up proud memories of the McCarthy era brought to you by fanatical, reactionary [R]s. Far from 'conservative' behavior, as usual, for the party who likes to reverse-label itself as 'conservative'.

But if you neo-knuckleheads are lame enough to actually buy into this label, then I'll celebrate jamming this so-called 'socialism' down your throats during the Obama administration. The more you writhe in your right-wing fits, the happier I will be - just as I was during the Clinton administration when all you neo-nitwit [R]s bemoaned how bad we had it, while not infrequently bringing up the spectre of socialism. As you [R] true-believers can see now, as you look up from the stinking mess YOU made of this country, you wouldn't know bad from good, left from right, conservative from liberal, up from down.....if it sat on your head - your lame-brained support of Bush, and now McCain, is ample proof of that.

If Obama's record is labeled "extreme" by Johnny-boy because Obama actually dared to vote against the money/moral/constitutional giveaway inflicted on us by the previous [R] Congress and the Bush administration, then this is just more [R] double-speak. Obama's record is a proud one that any true conservative can stand by.

I support Obama and the [D]s, and I'll put my conservative credentials up against any of you right-wing reactionary liberals.

A. Capitalist   July 18th, 2008 11:36 am ET

Of course Obama is a socialist. Socializing healthcare. Raising taxes because it will be more "fair". Unfortunately, the stars all aligned for the American people to be excited about a socialist message. And it may very well lead us into a depression.

Hey Mike from Texas – I'm all for socialized medicine and equality (not "special" protection for gays and lesbians – nice try). And we never should have gone to Iraq in the first place, which Obama knew and McCain did not. Voting for a Republican is like knowingly walking straight off a cliff.

Moe, NY   July 18th, 2008 11:35 am ET

At this point in time I would rather be a Socialist than a Republican.

Nick   July 18th, 2008 11:34 am ET

Obama may have voted far to the left, but the American political spectrum is much different then the global political spectrum. For example: A true conservative would never support the war in Iraq, bailouts for corporations, etc. A conservative is hands off. However, it seems to mean something different to the Republican party in this country.
Obama may have voted left of a self proclaimed socialist, but that doesn't make him a socialist in the traditional sense. Just because of some generic evaluation of his votes concluding that Obama has a "leftist" agenda doesn't mean anything. Show me a bill with truely Socialist goals that Obama voted for.
Furthermore, I don't understand why republicans are so scared of socialism as the next great evil of this country. If you are so commited to this premise and conservatism, don't use the post office, don't cash your social security check, don't drive on federally funded highways, don't use anything that is approved by the FDA, etc.
Nixon, Reagan, Bush 1, Bush 2 and especially McCain were NOT conservative. Thier administrations all resulted or would result in bigger governments. Thier promise of conservatism was always masked with flag waving propoganda, secrecy, and militarism. So if a staunch democrat can be accused of socialism, then all the prominant Republicans can be accused of fasicism.
Bob Barr is the only true conservative left in the bunch. Republicans please educate yourselves.

American are beginning to notice Obama's elevated opinion of himself. Obama is a three=year senator without a single important legislative achievement to his name, a former Illinois state senator who voted 'present' mostly 130 times. As president of the Harvard Law Review, as law professor and as legislator, has he ever produced a single notable piece of scholarship? Written a single memorable article? His most memorable work is a biography of his favorite subject: HIMSELF.

Dave, Illinois   July 18th, 2008 11:31 am ET

Yes, Obama and the extreme left wing of the Democrat party are socialist. Actually, the Democrats are truely diverse – economic rhetoric and policies are definately socialist and the Dems war against the unborn and others that cannot vote are much like the German fascists of the 1930's.
Regarding McCain's response, tell me what was a lie. Look at Obama's and Sander's voting record. There is this thing called a "search engine". Two of these "search engines" are google.com and yahoo.com. Try it sometime.
Also, I actually read Obama's "The Audacity of Hope". Based upon what I read, the man is a self-loving socialist. I read McCain's "Faith of my Fathers" and another book on McCain "John MCCain, an American Odyssey". Based upon what I read, this man sacrificed a lot for his country and has the character to be a great president. He is the first to admit that he is not perfect, unlike the empty suit Obama.

I know that Obama cheated and strong-armed and stole his way to the nomination.

That betrayal of the democratic process is why I will vote AGAINST Obama.

That and the fact that he is unqualified but arrogant, inexperienced but boastful, untested but cocky, unaccomplished but full of himself.

Tony   July 18th, 2008 11:31 am ET

Hey, "You Can't Win": I understand your point, but who's holding a gun to your head and making you work at McDonald's or wherever you're working? And why are you there? Maybe you should take a look at the decisions you've made and ask yourself if you could have made better ones. Each of us needs to be doing just that.

As for "being rewarded for your hard work", just what part of that exactly do you think is consistent with "the more you make, the more taxes you pay"? That's already the case, but Obama wants to make it even MORE so.

I'm all for controlling abuses from large corporations, loopholes, etc., but when it comes to the individual level, and you're telling me that the harder I work and the more I make, I'm going to have to pay even MORE taxes? Sorry, that doesn't wash.

I work very hard in an honest occupation and make over $200,000 a year. I worked VERY hard to get here, worked hard in my education, got nothing handed to me, and got to where I was with hard work and persistence. Am I not a "working American"? Or are working Americans only those who aren't as successful.

My last piece on my rant...one thing we are losing in our country is a culture of accountability. No matter what bad decisions we make, we don't expect to have to pay for them. Take out too big a loan? "The government should bail me out". Didn't study in school and forced to take jobs you don't like? "I should get more money from the government".

Personal accountability is one of the values that this country was built upon. If we could increase this (and hold corporations more accountable as well), we'll fix our society. But it's a longer term fix, and not one that satisfied those people who, like baby chicks squawking for their worm, are unable or unwilling to wait and work for it.

Michael New York   July 18th, 2008 11:31 am ET

Tony – you are an idiot of you really believe what you wrote. You whine about France and about the sense of entitlement, and how hard work breeds success, blah blah blah, and that somehow the Republicans represent that.

Of course what you completely fail to realize is that the Republicans and John McCain take money straight from your pocket, and give it to rich people like me. They do it because you don't even understand the difference, hiding behind all this "patriotism" BS. And they do it while sending your kids over to die in the desert while their kids fly on private jets, live in mansions, and never have to work for a living.

The irony is astounding, as is the complete inability for people like you to even see it.

Mike-texas,

I just don't believe the Government should be in charge of mandating donations and redistributing.

People can do this just fine on their own (if this is socialism, then fine). In fact, people give more when taxed less, especially when they know that there AREN'T gov't programs to help people. Conservatives typically give much more than Liberals (many polls and studies show) .

We probably agree more than we disagree...and I am by no means super-rich, could have a foreclosure and have had to change jobs. But I'm not looking to government help. I'm looking to church, family and friends...the way it should be. Not the Unemployment Office or a 90 day mortgage freeze from the government.

Of course he's a socialist. To believe in the democrat party agenda you have to be a socialist to one degree or another because that's what they stand for. Of course when you mention that word they all react like Linda Blair to Holy Water but they are what they are.

Paula "Hussein" Mack   July 18th, 2008 11:28 am ET

Every night at dinner I say to my husband "That John McCain is such a kookster! " as I rattle off the absurdities he has spoken that day. He isn't quite as amusing as Dubya..I mean who can top "I am the decider!" but he is great for a few laughs.
Obama is the refreshing politician to come along in 40 years and he can string three words together without making any ludicrous mistakes!!
I cannot fathom how anyone would want this inept old guy to finish off the destruction Bush has almost completed.. there won't be much left America but shreds.. and tatters.. get a grip..

I have to say that is the most absurd comment... mixing capitalism and socialism???!?!?! HAHA where did you get your degree. Being someone on the other end of the spectrum (wealthy) i don't want my taxes being higher so that you can have things offered to you for free. Simply ridiculous. Get an education, get a job, and work for your happiness.

Well, sure he's got some views and perspectives that could be considered socialist. But listen folks, socialism is just a political philosophy/approach. In and of itself, it isn't good or bad. So what if Obama is a socialist, which he clearly doesn't identify as anyway so this is obviously just a stupid McCain move of desperation to do exactly what Obama has said they'd try to do – scare people.

John in Columbus Ohio   July 18th, 2008 11:27 am ET

Mike in Severna Park, MD   July 18th, 2008 11:27 am ET

Before McCain opens his mouth again about Obama and his positions on issues, he, himself should actually have a position on an issue. Can anyone define his positions for me? Or should I ask Lieberman, Gramm and Black what he thinks?

Obama, please debate him soon so the world can see he is a house of cards.

This poor man doesn't even know what he had for breakfast on Monday. He doesn't remember his votes, he doesn't even remember his own service record and has built it into a virtual Rambo Movie ( Just don't ask him to release his Military records like Kerry did to confirm HIS record HE REFUSES)

Lyle   July 18th, 2008 11:27 am ET

The National Journal, a Washington weekly magazine, ranked Mr. Obama as the most liberal Senator of 2007. Mr. Obama has, in recent months, attempted to make himself appear more moderate in order to persuade voters to choose him. Sadly, Mr. Obama cannot run from his record, thin as it is. The false façade which he has created will eventually crumble and we will be left with the real Mr. Obama, a frightening and dangerous prospect.

The DNC, or perhaps the O-DNC as it currently stands, has truly lost touch with the majority of voters and the majority of Americans. Regardless of the many issues voters may have with Mr. McCain, ultimately, he is a much safer and more logical choice to run our great nation.

Matthew J.   July 18th, 2008 11:26 am ET

Well said, Mike–
A vote for OBama is;

1) a vote for socialism / communism
2) a vote for socialized medicine
3) a vote for special protection for gays and lesbians
4) a vote for racist groups like LaRaza
5) a vote for illegal aliens
6) a vote for welfare and food stamps for illegal aliens
7) a vote for sanctuary cities for illegal aliens
8) a vote for BIGGER government
9) a vote for extremist liberal judges
10) a vote for defeat in Iraq, we will have to go back
11) a vote against the 2nd amendment
12) a vote against the 1st amendment
13) a vote against family values

It's too bad the rest of the country doesn't realize what a hopeless socialist Obama is.

America cannot afford Obama as President!

Anybody but Obama '08!

joe in VA   July 18th, 2008 11:26 am ET

Once again the Obamaniacs can't stand to face the truth about their annointed candidate.

McCain didn't say BHO was a socialist, he said his record was further left than a self-described socialist in the senate.

The Obamaniacs cry foul when BHO is criticized but spew hate at nearly everyone else.

Instead of lamenting how McCain is running such a "low" campaign, why not defend BHO's senate record? So Obamaniacs....what sort of record DOES your candidate have? Have you even bothered to look? It won't take long, there's only 2 years worth....

James   July 18th, 2008 11:25 am ET

This is the worst kind of politics and a perfect example of what the Republican strategy is for Obama.

Throw out a lot of ambiguous statements and questions about his past, his morals, his patriotism, "true" belief system, is he really a muslim, is he a socialist.

How do you prove a negative?

The tactics of fear at its best.

Obama is a boogey man. You don't know what the monster is under the bed or in the closet.

Sad and pathetic. It's just unfortunate that so many Americans continue to vote against their own self interest and continue to support the Republican GOP (greed over people) Party.

McCain has removed all doubts that he is not a Christian. The way he treated his first wife and children, his divorce and his affair with Cindy while still married to his first wife, had been a great source of concern. This last action was the clincher. He lacks character, honor and integrity.

"Socialist"'s comment is right on. Again, if you Obama supporters have the guts for it, look long and hard at socialist countries. IT DOESN'T WORK.

I suppose I do have some faith in our system, however...while it may take a long time of pain to recover from where these socialist policies could take us, eventually it will simply be a blot on our history; evidence of a moment where our culture, at its most lazy, selfish and unproductive peak, managed to take us away from the values and principles upon which our country was founded. Sooner or later, laziness will no longer be fashionable or rewarded.

We rank something like 45th in the world in life expectancy, 37th in the world in infant mortality rates, and we have (by both number and percentage) more people in prison than any other nation, including China. And we are worried about whether Obama is socialist? Maybe if we learned something from socialism we wouldn't have these issues. McCain, you can do better than this...or maybe you can't.

"I'm trying to figure out, on a daily basis what happened to McCain's talk of a respectful campaign and discussion.
This guy is a toad…TO OLD AND DEMENTED TO HOLD THE POSITION OF PRESIDENT OF THE US."

Um, er...since when is stating facts about the VERY limited public record of an ex-community organizer disrespectful? And I love how the Obamatrons attach a despicable personal attack while disparaging a legitimate comment about an opponent's record. It's as if the blatant diametric opposites were somehow invisible to the average reader.

I started reading the various blogs and commentary pages during the primaries, and if there is one thing that is absolutely crystal clear, it's where the vicious attacks are coming from: straight from the Obama campaign and it's Delirious Dupes. As a Republican, I watched what they did to Hillary and Bill Clinton. It was beyond disgraceful. The same is happening to McCain, except McCain isn't falling for it, so Obama screams foul even when the expected criticism is precisely about his public record.

Prince Potus has about the thinest skin I've ever seen in a politician. His childish defensiveness makes Richard Nixon look well-adjusted. And it points out another troubling aspect of the Obama persona: he doesn't have a sense of humor. Nada (the eating his waffles doesn't count). Just think. A President with Richard Nixon's personality and Jimmy Carter's foreign and domestic policy.

Of course Obama is a socialist. He believes in taking from the rich to give to the poor without any consideration what is actually best for all. But let's not confuse him with a true socialist. Obama does not do wha the does because he actually believes it is something that will work for America. He is too smart and has too many smart people advising him to actually believe in his socialist policies. He is a socialist for the purpose of getting elected to the White House. So I guess we can call him an opportunistic socialist. If it was easier to get to the White House as a capitalist, Obama would be one.

Tony   July 18th, 2008 11:18 am ET

Pat, the reason why Obama's views are so popular with so many is that we have a LARGE number of people in this country who believe that they are entitled to those things that the rest of us work for. We do not have the RIGHT to happiness, only the right to PURSUE happinesss. The same for wealth, health, etc.

Our culture is becoming more and more socialist over time, and like the frog in the pan of water in which the temperature is slowly elevating, we will not see the problem until it's too late.

People, take a good hard long look at France. I mean, a really hard look. That is our future. Soon we're likely to be simply a large, heavily populated country of whiners who the rest of the world (at least the productive parts) will dismiss. The problem is that we already have a very large number of people who are basically like the rioting youths in France. What gets rewarded gets done, people. Pay for performance. When equality if favored instead of equity, really bad things happen. The sad part is that most people are either not smart enough to recognize this or simply salivating at the thought of a free lunch. There is no such thing, certainly not in the long term. Your sons and daughters will pay the price for your lack of achievement need.

Mike - Texas   July 18th, 2008 11:17 am ET

Steveojesse,

And you think capitalism works well with no issues? Think again.

Sure, if you are a member of the super-rich, then it works great. But for the rest of us... not so great.

What we need is a combination of the two. Take the best aspects of capitalism and merge them with the best aspects of socialism.

Of course, the owners of this country, your owners, would never allow it.

tidho   July 18th, 2008 11:17 am ET

His policies do sound pretty socialist to me. There's a reason its called 'socialized' healthcare.

He's funding social security by increasing taxes on the wealthy.

His plan is bigger government – that's moving towards Socialism whether you like the term or not.

What do you want a Democrat to do, preach personal responsibility?, lol.

Janice   July 18th, 2008 11:17 am ET

McCain being McCain – dirty politics of insinuation. John McCain knows Obama believes in a strong capitalist system but with sufficient safety nets – like most Americans.

On another subject .....

I find it curious that no CNN report I've seen has covered the story that other networks have covered of McCain telling a tasteless rape joke back in a previous campaign, and his campaign spokesperson when confronted with this said it was an example of how "authentic" McCain is.

You know – in most state elections I know (at least in strong Democratic states) , telling a joke like the one he told would end your chances of being elected. McCain I guess was very fortunate Arizona citizens did not hold him accountable – or else there are a lot of scary voters in Arizona..

I wonder why now it's not relevant when it comes to CNN's coverage of the Presidential candidates.?

You can be 100% sure if a Chicago newspaper in the past had covered Obama telling a joke like this as part of an old campaign, and if Obama's campaign chair today had answered that it showed "authenticity" that Obama would have wall to wall coverage for a week on this and his chances of being president would pretty much be over..

You can be biased by omission just as you can be biased by what you cover, CNN. Show the courage to tell the American people – an especially women voters – who this mean, sexist, man McCain really is.

Ndalio   July 18th, 2008 11:16 am ET

Here is McCain's voting record regarding VETERAN'S.

McCain: ‘I Received The Highest Award From Literally Every Veterans Organization In America"

The recognition McCain has received from veterans groups is not "high awards" but failing grades:

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America gave McCain a grade of D for his record of voting against veterans. (By contrast, Obama got a B+.)

Disabled Veterans of America noted McCain’s dismal 20 percent voting record on veterans’ issues. (Obama had an 80 percent.)

In a list of "Key Votes," Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) notes McCain "Voted Against Us" 15 times and "Voted For Us" only 8. (Obama voted for VVA 12 times, and against only once.)

So, if this makes Obama more to the "left", does that mean those that are toward the "right" are against Veteran's benefits?

Jon in WA   July 18th, 2008 11:11 am ET

Chuck   July 18th, 2008 11:11 am ET

I wonder how it would look of the voting records of McCain and Obama were compared side to side? I wonder who's voting record would show they are more in tune to America and our basic rights under the constitution. It seems to me that every time McCain opens his mouth about voting records that he leaves himself sitting under a heavy light of disparity and misleading statements. I think CNN and fact check should do this and give us a detailed report of their findings.
***Linda from prescot AZ. I have also checked into this and McCain has not fought in any war other than Vietnam and he has not been in a command position that would give him credit for winning any war. So I am kind of curious myself as to his knowledge base for that statement.

What is wron with being a Muslim, or being a Socialist? So much talk of tolerance and inclusion when U.S. citizesn cannot even fathom the idea of having anyone who holds these qualities to engage in national polititics. Yet, this is not about division but about unity. Which unity? Americans need to wake up to the realities that they are more divided than they think are and suppressing those thoughts and emeotion simply by rallying around a candidate with a darker shade of skin colour, as a quick fix isn't going to help in the long run.

Supporting Obama just because people think 'blacks have earned the right' to the position of President of the United States, and not because he can actually adress economic, ideological, social, religious, political and cultural injustices will leave Americans divided more than they can ever imagine.

Post if you wish but I'm not counting on it!

McCain is using the old and tired Republican strategy of stating lies and distortions, so that his opponent has to spend his time setting the record straight rather than addressing the issues and the weaknesses of the Republican Party. That worked a couple of times (it got Bush elected, then re-elected), but people are wise to it now, finally. Because McCain has become known for distortions and lies, his credibility is in the toilet. No matter what he says about Obama or anything else for that matter, no one is really listening, other than for the entertainment value.

Enjoy your time in the spotlight while you can, John. In a few months they're going to lock you in the attic like a crazy uncle. With any luck, we'll never hear from you again.

Socialist   July 18th, 2008 11:09 am ET

I don't want to work for a living. But you make $100,000 per year. So it's fair if I get half.

But since you are not married with kids, like I am, I should get more. so if we divide your earnings by 5 (you, me, my wife, and two kids), my family should get $80,000 and you can keep your $20,000 so that we are all equal.

Of course we will all have communal healthcare, but since I'm not a very good doctor, you'll have to accept whatever treatment I can give you.

And now we're name-calling. Nice.

Becky   July 18th, 2008 11:08 am ET

At least Obama HAS a voting record. McCain doesn't bother to show up, even for important votes. It is sad when Ted Kennedy can come in from chemo to vote for the Medicare bill and the only Senator that didn't show up was McCain.

He also didn't vote on the GI Bill, but was against it. McCain isn't a socialist, but he is a jerk.

Nathan,   July 18th, 2008 11:08 am ET

Voters also judge their candidates by how they morph into George Bush. Thats how McCain will be judged come November. This man used to be principled. He's just as far right as he accuses Obama of beng left. Mccain is prostituting himself to every group he's opposed over his career. We should have expected he would change his stripes after the way he changed them when he srtarted cheating on his first wife with the second one because she "wasn't the same woman " after her horrific car accident in Philadelphia. I'm sorry that he spent 6 years in captivity but I agree with with Wesley Clarke when he said that experience alone dosen't qualify him to be President. It appears he was never a maverick at all. He just opposed the Republican adminsitration becasue it was a way to rise above everyone else. He'll apparently say or do anything to get elected.

WeBoDave   July 18th, 2008 11:07 am ET

I don't know if Senator McCain is an inept, senile, war monger, evil, chameleon.

Whatever your political opinions, let's be clear. Obama IS a socialist. Listen to him talk about "fairness" at the expense of economic growth, his church of 20 years practices a Liberation theology which is based in Marxism – Universal Healthcare – tax the rich and give to the poor – yada yada yada. It all sounds good on paper, but it NEVER works in practice. Obama believes that the government knows how to spend YOUR money better than YOU do. That is the definition of socialism and it has been an abject failure wherever it's been implemented in the world

ProudToBeDemocrat   July 18th, 2008 11:05 am ET

I never use to believe when you get older you turn to a child now I can see why, Mccain is acting like a child, for God sake he can not finish a sentence with out the mention of Obama. Mr. Mcshame we need to hear what you can do to reverse the failed Bush policy and get Our Country to the right track, Stop bushing Obama everytime only kids do that.

Amy   July 18th, 2008 11:05 am ET

Actually, I've read his early speeches and papers. He's not a socialist. He's a Marxist.

Bob Hussein Akmad Jones – "Let me help you John…….YES HE IS. The man wants to take 55% of my pay check to redistribute as he sees fit and many Americans think that is fine. My wife and I make 300K a year and live in Boston and we are not rich. Yet this man when you throw in his social security raises, medicare and capitol gains is going to get easly over half my check"

Are you kidding me? You make 300k a year and are complaining? It amazes me how many clueless people are here in the US. You think you have it bad...there are people in this country who make 10% and less than what you make in a year and are struggling to get by. We need someone in office who understands that and is willing to do something to help the situation. John McCain wants to keep the Bush tax cuts in place which lets you keep a higher percentage of your pay check then someone making fractions of what you make. In what planet is that a good idea?

Go get in to your luxury SUV and whine about it to your golf buddies. We don't want to hear it here.

Linda K.   July 18th, 2008 11:02 am ET

Is it socialism to help the people of your country? Consider this.

Billions go to Israel every year. The U.S. has poured money into the rebuilding of Iraq. I can't even name all the countries that are beneficiaries of U.S. foreign aid.

And what about health care? Does McCain pay for his own health insurance? No, that's provided by the U.S. taxpayers. McCain and the 534 others enjoy many perks from their jobs in Congress, all paid for by us.

So is it criminal to ask that some of our money be spent to help us? Whether it's a better, fairer health care system or a stronger infrastructure, the American people deserve more from our government. After all, we're the ones footing the bill.

DJ Los Angeles   July 18th, 2008 11:02 am ET

McCain and your neo-con henchmen are a joke. You people are the same folks that are trying to label Franklin Roosevelt a Socialist and are trying to destroy all his great accomplishments such as the New Deal , Social Security and a number of other programs the vast number of Americans want.

JA Cook   July 18th, 2008 11:02 am ET

Who knows for sure where McCain stands? Is he a neo-con or moderate?

He tries to be whatever is required at the moment. He's courted conservatives and the middle. He stood with Bush but tries to create separation.

He claims to be a maverick, but stands with a lot of the old-school conservatives and many of the sources of America's problems, like Phil Gramm.

He's going to run a clean, non-negative campaign, but goes right at it.

Turning the page   July 18th, 2008 11:02 am ET

Senator John McCain used to be one of the truly honorable members of the US Senate. But that all ended when he lost his 2000 bid to be the Republican Presidential nominee to Geroge W Bush. Since then, he has totally morphed into a Karl Rovian disciple. In the process, John McCain lost his bearings and became John Mcsame. He will latch on to any Right wing talking points.

McCain + a portion of Rove = Mcsame.

McCain keeps proving what an IDIOT he truly is. This man just keeps putting his ashy foot in his mouth over and over. I mean, it's NO wonder he's quickly losing his strong states. Americans are starting to witness his "true colors" when it comes to women issues, issues about our economy.

HOW can a President NOT be educated and fully in tuned with what's going on in our economy? Dah....just take a look at his buddy Bush, he didn't have a clue and STILL doesn't.

Americans needs to start paying attention to the "warning flags" .

First McCain said Obama was irresponsible for saying he would attack Al Queida in Pakistan if their was solid intelligence. Since calling Obama 'irresponsilbe' our miliarty has attacked Al Queida 4 times in Pakistan.

McCain calls Obama naive and reckless for wanting to set a timetable to get out of Iraq. Next thing you know the sovereign Iraq government demands we set a timetable.

McCain calls Obama reckless and an appeaser for saying he will sit down with leaders of countries unfriendly to the U.S. 3 months later the U.S. successfully appeases and negoitiates with N. Korea ('axis of evil') and they begin to dismantle their nuclear plants.

McCain and Bush call Obama an appeaser and irresponsible for saying he wants direct diplomacy with unfriendly countries rather than threats of war. Just yesterday the State Department announces they are sending a top level official to Iran to sit down and have direct talks.

Obama has been saying Afganistan needs more troops and equipment for a year now while McCain barely mentioned it. Obama makes a big speech about it and McCain follows Obama's coattails and states what Obama has been saying all along.

Who has the judgement?

Steveojesse   July 18th, 2008 10:51 am ET

BTW, Americans gave $300Billion of their own hard earned money to other Americans, beyond what they paid in taxes.

There is no reason to believe that this would decrease if taxes went down.

Who really wants to live with socialism where property and wealth are redistributed by the government? As it is, we are moving in that direction. Eminent Domain is being used to put up malls and corporate headquarters (Best Buy in MN). Healthcare would be another. While it may seem altruistic to "have everyone benefit", it does not work this way.

Beware of Obama's plans. More government programs just mean you WILL be taxed more. You will have a lower quality of life as you give up the responsibilities of living to the government to decide.

Jason   July 18th, 2008 10:50 am ET

The whole point of his quote was that McCain wouldn't call him socialist– thereby standing aloof from such name-calling. He simply noted the particulars of Obama's voting record, the same sentiments which have been voiced by Republicans as well as Democrats.

CNN's bias is sickening.

Bulldog   July 18th, 2008 10:49 am ET

CHANGE??????? BO – null null – otherwise known as Dr. NO!

"CHANGE"......What I Believe BO's Definition of Change Is!

C = COMMUNISM
H = HATRED
A = ABORTION
N = NEGATIVE
G = GREED
E = ELITISM

"Change" is fleeting! Positive and Negative – Good and Bad. Obama's self-serving "change" born from contempt and controversy, is like a wrecker destroying in a day or two, what it took noble builders – our founding fathers – years to construct.

The tale of the sinister scorpion, mirrors BO's blueprint of deceit.

The scorpion, a poor swimmer, asked the turtle to carry him across the river. "Are you mad?" exclaimed the turtle. "While swimming, you'll sting me and I'll drown."
Laughed the scorpion, "If I sting you, you would drown and I would go down with you. Where is the logic in that?"
"You're right. Hop on!" said the turtle.
Halfway across the river, the scorpion gave the turtle a mighty sting. As they both sank to the bottom, the turtle resignedly asked, "You said there'd be no logic in stinging me. Why did you do it?"
"It has nothing to do with logic," the drowning scorpion replied. "IT'S JUST MY CHARACTER."

What did McCain say that was wrong? He said Obama is the most leftist senator based on his voting record, which is a statement that has been said many times even by democrats. He also said he doesn't know if Obama is a socialist. I don't see why this is newsworthy.

Steveojesse   July 18th, 2008 10:37 am ET

@ Helene,

I like your use of irony about a socialist fixing a recession. Socialism doesn't work. Rather than raise people up to aspire to the highest goals like a free market and Capitalism, Socialism brings everyone down to the lowest common denominator.

When the government programs are based on taxing the highest earners the most, and continuing to increase those taxes to the point that they say, why should I work for these other people who do not need to contribute as much but get the same things as I do?

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics showed that when everyone gets the same exact benefits, food, housing, etc, there is no reason to grow or innovate or even help your neighbor.

Here in America, the unknowns, risks and possibilities gives everyone a chance to have an abundance. Many people that achieve this give back to the community more, and more efficiently than the government ever could.

Willow, from Iowa   July 18th, 2008 10:36 am ET

The term socialist is very old and misused. The old Societ Union said they were Socialist when they were Communist. Is McCain insinuating that Obama is a Communist? No, I don't think so.

Canada, France, and England all have health care for everyone. That is considered a Socialist idea. Lots of countries governments "own" the utilities. That's a socialist idea. In a large country with a lot of people, having health care etc. is a good idea so everyone is taken care of. That's a Socialist idea. There is nothing wrong with universal health care. And if that's a Socialist idea, I'm all for it.

Seyi, AU   July 18th, 2008 10:36 am ET

How can a supposedly muslim with radical friends now be a socialist.
I think we can know fairly refer to you as a Fascist. I don't think I've witnessed a more name-calling campaign as far as I can remember.
and 1 more thing.
Obama does not have to go the IRAQ and AFGHANISTAN to make informed decisions about the area. He's a senator, he has briefings and access to every documents concerning the area.
You advised him to go, now you're claiming the trip is purely political.
STOP THE GAMES and START talk about real issues.
You have a lot of convincing to do, and so far, you're not getting this independent's vote.

A vote for OBama is;

1) a vote for socialism / communism
2) a vote for socialized medicine
3) a vote for special protection for gays and lesbians
4) a vote for racist groups like LaRaza
5) a vote for illegal aliens
6) a vote for welfare and food stamps for illegal aliens
7) a vote for sanctuary cities for illegal aliens
8) a vote for BIGGER government
9) a vote for extremist liberal judges
10) a vote for defeat in Iraq, we will have to go back
11) a vote against the 2nd amendment
12) a vote against the 1st amendment
13) a vote against family values

These are all qualities of a Socialist.

@ NotPayingHillaryDebt , "Socialism is better than Fascism"

WHAT!?

You know. there are other choices, like Libertarian. Why would anyone even consider one of these two "socialist" or "fascist" candidates?
why are people even talking about voting for these candidates who have shown that they do not really want to limit government (well, McCain has done work to reduce-but not enough).

Vote for your freedoms

My Friends – Like McCain would say….It depends on who McCain is talking to. At times he is friends with Bush and sometimes he’s running away form Bush. So to best describe their relationship lets just say they’re frenemies. Anyway McCain is a coward just like his frenemy, why didn’t he call Obama a socialist at the NAACP?

Jon   July 18th, 2008 10:28 am ET

McCain never called him a socialist; he simply stated facts. Where is the personal attack?

McCain is Right   July 18th, 2008 10:27 am ET

McCain said: "All I know is his voting record, and that’s what people usually judge their elected representatives by.” He is absolutely right. And that's precisely why I will not be voting for him in the election, as he has proven – by his voting record – that will be definitely be Bush's third term in guiding this country into further destruction and chaos in too many areas simultaneously. Anybody who will be voting for McCain must be asking for the following: more-for-the-rich economic policies, greater sufferings for the hard-working people of America (particularly the minorities), more young Americans deaths in useless wars that will only profit arms dealers, military industry, and oil companies, much less money for the children of the poor, more bankrupcies of small and mid-size family businesses, further destruction of America's natural resources for the sake of short-term profits of the oil companies, etc. etc.

evil empire   July 18th, 2008 10:25 am ET

gov't run healthcare is socialism... so yes Obama is a socailist.

corporate run gov't is fascism... so yes Mcain is a fascist.

too many americans don't understand thier own country's history- so they just let the free, i mean corporate press tell them what to believe.

Dan   July 18th, 2008 10:24 am ET

Oh Johnny boy, you might want to figure out what socialist actually means before you say something like that...I have an idea, use a computer and check it out. Oh wait, you don't know how to...sad in today's day in age.

Bob Indianapolis, IN   July 18th, 2008 10:24 am ET

Yeah, just like we don't know how advanced your Alzheimer's is....but we can speculate!

IQ   July 18th, 2008 10:24 am ET

THIS FOOL WANTS TO SCARE THE STUPID PEOPLE. AFTER WHAT BUSH DID SOCIALISM IS BETTER.

DB   July 18th, 2008 10:23 am ET

I am shocked at McCain's reply – he well does know that Obama is NOT a socialist but is shamelessly eluding that he might be. But what is more disqusting is McCain's attempt to paint liberal Demorcrats as socialists. I'm a moderate Democrat and believe that Obama is a moderate soul as well, but it wouldn't matter if he were more liberal. McCain just took a slap at the founding fathers values of Democracy and free speech. Shame on him and his so called patriotism.

Kelby   July 18th, 2008 10:23 am ET

It's good to know that his voting record, points of view and stance on pertinent issues is the opposite of yours and Republican party.
It's good to know that Barrack Obama does not follow the conservatvie policies of the GOP.

It's good to know that Obama thinks that the government should work for the people and not its own selfish existence.

Why is liberal a bad word in Washington? Why is it when someone says LET'S HELP THE PEOPLE that person is branded as a socialist?

Webster defines the word liberal as: favoring gradual reform, especially political reforms that extend democracy, distribute wealth more evenly, and protect the personal freedom of the individual.

By this definition, We should all be liberal.

And Mr. McCain you, above all people, should know that Barrack Obama is not a Socialist. HE IS THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINIEE THAT WILL BEAT YOU IN NOVEMBER, AND THE NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!

You can breathe a sigh of relief America, HELP IS ON THE WAY.

OBAMA '08 DEMOCRATS '08 AND FOREVER!

Ben (Eugene, OR)   July 18th, 2008 10:23 am ET

The way Obama speaks, would make me believe that he is a moderate democrat.

The way Obama votes, would make me believe that he is a far left democrat.

I think his voting records indicate that he his leaning towards socialism. He is most definitely not a socialist, but he leans toward it. I guess that's why McCain isn't sure.

Mike, ATL GA   July 18th, 2008 10:22 am ET

So much for straight talk....

ryan   July 18th, 2008 10:22 am ET

This is typical republican spin. There are about 25 different independent organizations that rate how liberal or how conservative each member of congress is. They all use different criteria to evaluate each senator. Out all 25 organizations, only one found Sen. Obama to be the most liberal senator in congress. In fact, his average from all 25 does not put him in the top 10. Meanwhile, the average of all these organizations finds Obama closer to the center than John McCain, but you won't here any media outlets talk about that.

Big D   July 18th, 2008 10:22 am ET

I thought McCain had pledged to keep this election focused on issues, and not on personal smears. This is a ridiculous statement from McCain and deliberately misrepresents Obama. And that claim about Obama being the 'most liberal Senator' has already been debunked and proven that Obama is not extreme. Repeat: Obama is not extreme.

Helene   July 18th, 2008 10:22 am ET

Good ! We need a socialist in this country. Maybe it will save it from complete ruin and recession...

Sandy   July 18th, 2008 10:22 am ET

Mc-Idiot has only one line..."Obama is a flip-flopper." Can't he come up with something else? Of course, they are all followed by that stupid grin. I am glad the press thinks he is hilarious, because the public doesn't.

Mc-Idiot, why not address some issues on your own and not ride on the back of Obama by always being negative against him.

We have a lot of issues to solve here in America...why don't you figure out a few answers that aren't pandering...

cheryl (RETIRED VETS FOR OBAMA)   July 18th, 2008 10:22 am ET

McCain really makes me want to UPCHUCK! I hate listening to his stupid voice.

dude   July 18th, 2008 10:21 am ET

deja vu. "Barack is not a muslim, as far as I know." Obama is not a socialist, he's already moved closer to center. Somewhere, Eugene Debs just chuckled.

Jesse, Burnsville, MN   July 18th, 2008 10:21 am ET

McSame, you should be worried about your own voting record.

Basically, would I vote for the person who has voted 96% of the time with the Bush administration or the person who has voted a majority of the time against the Bush administration? That is an easy answer.

The future of our country and our world cannot be dependent upon another Republican intellectual midget in the highest office! We are at a breaking point!

Perla   July 18th, 2008 10:20 am ET

I doubt McCain could even define socialism.

prairieguy   July 18th, 2008 10:20 am ET

YAWN...go back to Bushie McSame!!!

And you said you would run a clean campaign...yah right!!!!

Michael   July 18th, 2008 10:19 am ET

I don't know if McCain understands it's not 1950.

Cyrus - NY   July 18th, 2008 10:19 am ET

First the scary tactic that he might be a "militant", then he could be a "Muslim" with shady ties, now GOP goes for the "socialist" phobia!!

So McCarthyish...so outdated...so vile.

Patrick   July 18th, 2008 10:19 am ET

This is a pointless news article that resembles the tactics of the Red Scares.

Mike   July 18th, 2008 10:19 am ET

What is this guy trying to prove he is not that old by acting like he is 5. Lets just call people names and hope it sticks. Well McCain you are a butthead, and nobody likes a butthead. How's that for name calling?

Jim   July 18th, 2008 10:18 am ET

What ever happened to a respectful campaign, why doesn't this guy worry about himself and addressing his stance on issues instead of worrying about Obama so much...freakin republicans, your days are numbered...you and your smear campaigns that you said you'd stay away from, lieing typical republican...what a WASTE

Natasha   July 18th, 2008 10:18 am ET

McCain spents more time talking about Obama than giving solutions. Sounds like he wants to be onboard the train of change....LOL Get over it McCain. The world needs a leader not a War Monger.

Bob Hussein Akmad Jones   July 18th, 2008 10:18 am ET

Let me help you John.......YES HE IS. The man wants to take 55% of my pay check to redistribute as he sees fit and many Americans think that is fine. My wife and I make 300K a year and live in Boston and we are not rich. Yet this man when you throw in his social security raises, medicare and capitol gains is going to get easly over half my check

Mike   July 18th, 2008 10:18 am ET

Funny how Barack Obama continues to campaign with a plan for Iraq, a plan for the economy, a plan for health care, and all John McCain can do is call him names and criticize.

Does John McCain have any kind of plan to sell us, or is he just going to insult his way into the White House?

Squid Shark   July 18th, 2008 10:18 am ET

Pretty close to a socialist I would say

Nick - Arlington, VA   July 18th, 2008 10:18 am ET

Sounds like Hillary's, "As far as I know, Barack Obama isn't a muslim.".....pathetic McCain!!

Terri in Fl   July 18th, 2008 10:17 am ET

Listening to McCain gripe and complain all the time really makes him look and sound like a cranky old man who does nothing but sit around and complain. He really needs to find someone to move him into a more positive direction – give people a reason to want to like and follow him. Who wants to deal with a perpetual malcontent!

Jimmy P   July 18th, 2008 10:17 am ET

At least someone finally asked the question! Of course he is!!

Alan Boyer   July 18th, 2008 10:17 am ET

here we go with another label!!! The GOP is pathetic...still trying to find a label that will stick. Good luck! Kinda like Hillary's "he's not a muslum as far as I know."

J   July 18th, 2008 10:16 am ET

yes, because when you vote on a bill you actually vote along a qualitative spectrum. It isn't just a yes or a no, there are degrees to the yes and the no. And apparantly you can go more left or right on a specific issue depending on how emphatically you vote yes or no. John McCain, if I only had a dime for every one of your lies... gas prices wouldn't mean a thing to me.

Greg, NY   July 18th, 2008 10:16 am ET

Asked if he thought Obama was a socialist, McCain answered: “I don’t know. All I know is his voting record, and that’s what people usually judge their elected representatives by.”

McCain doesn't even know his own voting record, how can he be expected to know Obama's.

AJ   July 18th, 2008 10:16 am ET

Again, politics of fear. He'll say anything to get ahead.

Kevin Leo (Jonesboro, GA)   July 18th, 2008 10:16 am ET

This is the same man who promised to elevate the process and not use personal attacks?! Calling or alluding to someone as a socialist is about as low as a person can go in this country. Keep it up McCain, you will truly get our base fully energized to keep you and your ignorant kind out of the White House.

NotPayingHillaryDebt   July 18th, 2008 10:15 am ET

McCain answered: “I don’t know. All I know is his voting record, and that’s what people usually judge their elected representatives by.”

Well someone should take a look at yours especially the women ... You have done nothing for Women ... + voting 95% with Bush

Socialism is better than Fascism

Erica Rose   July 18th, 2008 10:14 am ET

How does he know Obama's record when he can't even remember his?...Seriously!

JIM...TX   July 18th, 2008 10:14 am ET

A socialist??? Something else John doesn't know anything about. So why even open your mouth.......

Marie   July 18th, 2008 10:13 am ET

I don't no if Obama is a socialist... The question that should have been posed to McSame ... Senator McCain are you a Facist?

Canadian for OBAMA   July 18th, 2008 10:13 am ET

That's nice coming from someone who can't even remember his own voting record!!

The man is losing it!!! Wake up America!

Stacy Clarks   July 18th, 2008 10:12 am ET

McCain keeps sinking lower and lower, that is so beneath him to say, how deperate

im so dissapointed in him...can we trust mccain's words when he said he was going to run a decent campaing, but he's not?!?!

CAN'T TRUST MCCBUSH!!!
