Bud Day, shown in the 2004 Swift Boat Vets for Truth ad.

(CNN) - A leading John McCain surrogate stirred controversy Friday after defending the Iraq war in particularly stark terms, telling reporters "the Muslims have said either we kneel, or they're going to kill us."

Bud Day, who was a prisoner of war with McCain in Vietnam and often advocates for the Arizona senator's presidential bid, made the comments during a conference call with Florida reporters organized by the Florida Republican Party.

The Miami Herald has posted audio of the call

"I don't intend to kneel, and I don't advocate to anybody that we kneel, and John doesn't advocate to anybody that we kneel," he also said.

Asked to respond to Day's comments, the McCain campaign issued a short statement from spokesman Michael Goldfarb.

“The threat we face is from radical Islamic extremism," he said.

Corey Saylor, the national legislative director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, told CNN Friday McCain should directly repudiate the remarks.

"CAIR would like to see Senator McCain come out and make a clear statement repudiating these remarks," he said. "We don't believe they're helpful at all in either putting out the campaign's message or winning the hearts and minds in the Muslim world that America needs to be winning."

"Earlier this year Sen. McCain in a similar situation said that there's no place in his campaign for that kind of rhetoric," he added. "I'd like to see him come out and reiterate that statement because obviously people in Florida haven't heard his position."

Day, a highly decorated retired U.S. Air Force Colonel who received the Medal of Honor for his actions in Vietnam, is a member of John McCain's "Truth Squad" - which his campaign says was launched to respond to unfair attacks on the Arizona senator's record of military service.

He was also a member of the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth - the group that was created to attack 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry’s military service record and derailed his presidential bid.

"The bottom line is this: 527 groups can do very effective, truthful things, and the Swift Boat attack was totally truthful," Day also said in Friday's conference call.

Outspoken Muslim   July 18th, 2008 10:12 pm ET

There are plenty American Muslims that speak out on radical islam, unfortunately the press never seems to cover it. It's always the crazies that seem to get the attention of the media. They always go straight to the crazy groups with m-16's yelling "God is Great" and never show the sensible Muslims in the background shaking their heads in disgust. Trust me there are US Military Muslims like myself who've served in Iraq, and abroad who have been more than outreaching to the community to get the message across that like Timothy Mcveah, the ku klux klan, Abortion Clinic bombers, and George W. Bush who are supposedly was outspoken christians – there are nuts and zealots in every religious lot. Islam does not have a monopoly on that.

Hate to break it to you   July 18th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

What a shame for McShame surrogates. Not all muslims are out to get the us. What to you expect form 2 old goats.

AK28   July 18th, 2008 10:00 pm ET

There is nothing called extremist radical muslims, its all western media created these terminologies. In every belief or sect there are bad people, such Hitler a Christian, American Whites also discriminated blacks in USA. Similarly among muslims there are bad people, so don't blame to the religion on what ever bad things people do. There are good muslims in USA as well.

A person can only be frightened if one let's themselves be frightened. It's getting old and quite frankly, very annoying. Wake up people. You have nothing to fear but fear itself.

Sarah   July 18th, 2008 9:50 pm ET

This is not fear mongering, though not said in a politically correct way, it is the truth. Too bad more Americans don't have that kind of backbone.

PUMA 4 HILL   July 18th, 2008 9:47 pm ET

there's nothing wrong with the truth. The Muslim extremist hate America and all Americans and we can't afford to let our guard down.

And, Obama will kneel to the Muslims.. he'll kneel to just about anyone who hates America – because you know America is downright MEAN.

Randy   July 18th, 2008 9:45 pm ET

Anthony,

Muslims definitely have come out against Islamic extremism. If the 9/11 attacks didn't occur, they would be living more peaceful lives. The September 11th attacks and other acts of terror have hurt them. Anti Muslim hate crimes grew 1700% in 2001 after the terror attacks. I'm positive that the vast majority of Muslims in the US hate what the terrorists did and continue to do.

Honorable Kansas Vet   July 18th, 2008 9:44 pm ET

While I thank Day for his "past" service to the nation, his actions as a swiftboater and his current actions are a disgrace. I can say no more, while some have provided honorable service to the nation in the past, the past is the past and current actions are neither honorable or for the good of the nation.

Jim in Orlando   July 18th, 2008 9:41 pm ET

You are as dumb as a stump in your absolving the Muslims of owning the franchise for terrorism against Christians and Americans by citing McVeigh and others. Not even worth a debate. Pure stupidity.

Greg   July 18th, 2008 9:37 pm ET

I'm a 27 year veteran of the AIr Force and still serving and I do not care for McCain whatsoever. Obama has proven that he cares about the people in the military and not just the machine. I would not personally disparage Bud Day as it is inappropriate to smear a veterans service even though he chose that route. I know a great deal of folks in the military that are supporting Obama, in fact it has already been shown that he is getting a larger share of donations from your serviceman than McCain. Unfortunately while the republicans always scream about supporting veterans it is tradionally democrats that support legislation for the rank and file. Not exclusively but I could cite numerous efforts in the past year that McCain and Bush have been against.

Scott Long   July 18th, 2008 9:36 pm ET

Day needs to kneel allright. He needs to kneel and pray for forgiveness for this hateful and racist bungling. But, hey, this is only the beginning. Just wait for the race bating to begin later this summer and watch the corporate media sit by and give these old men a mouthpiece to spread fear and hatred against muslims and anyone else who wants a real change in foreign policy and a decent distribution of wealth in this former democracy called the USA.

I spent 22 years in the US military and 6-plus years in Saudi Arabia, a feat not many people can match. I am not an Arab nor a Muslim, but I do know about many of the problems the West faces when dealing with Arabs and Muslims. I seem to know more than just about anyone running the federal government about the Middle East – I definately know more than John McCain and any of his headless henchmen. We all need to pay attention to what the candidates do and say about themselves, rather than what they say about the competition.

McCain has adopted the same campaign strategy as Dubba – which is scare them to death – and since Obama has a strike against him to begin with, it should be easy to scare many "patriotic" Americans.

Eric   July 18th, 2008 9:04 pm ET

"CAIR would like to see Senator McCain come out and make a clear statement repudiating these remarks," he said. "We don't believe they're helpful at all in either putting out the campaign's message or winning the hearts and minds in the Muslim world that America needs to be winning.".....excuse me? What does this fellow, Corey Saylor, mean? Is it the mission of Americans or the western world to win the hearts and minds in the Muslim world? I think not! The Crusades ended centuries ago. I am not aware of other religions or cultures that are threatining the Muslim world with terror tactics and swords. If anyone honestly believes that the Muslims will accept other religions in their culture, think again. The Muslim long-range mission is to dominate the world and drive out all non-belivers with whatever means are necessary...including the eventual slaughter of all men, women and children who are not Muslims.

Hmm how many Hindu suicide bombers have attacked the USA or its military in the last few years? It isn't "fear mongering" when it is the truth. Islam is going threw the same thing Christianity went threw during the middle ages. Now you can either ignore the truth and "hope" things get better or you can confront the truth and take action. I would guess most of the Leftists who post here are in favor of the "give them anything they want so they won't hurt us" option.

MCAIN IS ALREADY TOO OLD TO BE PRESIDENT OF THE USA
It’s almost guaranteed that McCain will lose. He won’t be able to run in 2012 as he will be way too old. Right now he is just viewed as too old. Only 2% of people polled think someone in the 70’s is the best age for a President. So he has questionable health, is already viewed bu others as too old, and even states so himself: In the 2000 race he stated that he would be too old in 2008 to run again. So he is not trying to build momentum for a later victory, a-la-Reagan.”

Comments like this exemplify the ignorance of Americans. The Muslim religion does not support violence. However, as with all religions, including Christianity, there is a small percentage that are radical extremists. I think the events of 9/11 erased the memory of the Oklahoma City Bombing, which claimed the lives of 168 adults and children, from the minds of many Americans. That was a domestic terrorist attack by a radical Christian terrorist. Nor should we forget Waco, Texas. It is important not to target an entire religion because of a handful of individuals who twist religious conviction to suit their own purpose. Likewise, we must remember that America has it own home grown terrorists.

Franky   July 18th, 2008 8:35 pm ET

"All the deluded, anti-American Obamabots on this blog seem to care more about being nice to terrorists than calling them out for the despicable cowards they really are.

Al Bond   July 18th, 2008 8:32 pm ET

Why is the US economy collapsing in so many ways? A government is not run by one person. It is run by a whole collection of people, so it is vitally important that the leader appoint good people to help run it. What has Bush done? He has appointed

1. Diplomats who don’t believe in negotiation;
2. Climatologists who don’t believe in climate change;
3. Banking regulators who don’t believe in regulation;
4. An Environmental Protection Agency which doesn’t believe in environmental protection;
5. A justice department that doesn’t believe in justice (unless torture is justice);
6. An education department that doesn’t want to fund education;
7. A veterans administration that doesn’t support veterans;
8. A food and drug administration controlled by the pharmaceutical industry;
9. A defense department controlled by the weapons industry;
10. An energy department controlled by the oil industry.
11. A transportation department controlled by the auto industry;
12. Judges who don’t believe in the law (except for the Bush Doctrine);
13. UN representatives who want to destroy the UN;
14. An Agricultural Department controlled by the agricultural industry.
15. Intelligence agencies that punish intelligence.
16. Biologists who don’t believe in evolution (like physicists who don’t believe in gravity?);
17. Historians who believe the world is 6,000 years old.
18. Futurists who believe the end is just around the corner.
19. Economists who believe that the best way to stimulate the economy is to cut corporate taxes, wage endless war, and borrow as much as we can from foreign countries.
20. Lobbyists to every regulatory position in government to regulate exactly the same industries that they worked for before the government job and will work for after the government job.
21. An entire collection of staff members chosen based on their ability to overlook the obvious if it contradicts “the world according to Bush.”

Well, we could go on all day, but you get the picture. And Americans are confused by why the US economy is collapsing and we get no respect in the rest of the world? It seems pretty obvious to me. And McSame will be, well, pretty much the same (if not worse).

Two things:1. Hey Gabe, last time I looked, our servicemembers were actual US CITIZENS with the RIGHT to their own opinion. I know, cause I am one. If anyone has a right to speak about who the next President are the people who serve our nation. 2. Having served in Iraq, I ahve to say Col. Day is totally right. The radical muslims want nothing more than to destroy anything and everything that the US stands for. The Council on American and Islamic Relations needs to rupudiate every attack on the US and US citizens made by radical Muslims. I find it rather convient that when the citizens of this country exercise their actual rights, someone stands up and says that we are hatemongers, racists, etc. Yet the "religous scholars" of the Middle East can call for the killing of Americans and it's the "word of God" that they are speaking. When I say 'they' I mean any Arab who calls for the destruction of the United States. Find them all and send them to Hell. By the way, I'm only 37 yearsold and not some 'old fart' as some of these other posters have called Col. Day. God Bless him.

No, well that doesn't surprise me in any way! This is why McCain and his cronies should NOT be elected. You ignorant people, why don't you meet a Muslim and I think you're in for a real surprise (and if you are, you're just plain stupid!)

Muslims worship the same god! And did it ever occur to anyone that if all were terrorists, wouldn't we be dead? Finally, what happened to the KKK, the IRA, the Kosovo incident? They were conducted by Christians, why can we look past that? Oh... a few did it. The same goes for the Twin Towers and the Taliban, what's the difference?

His remark is absolutely accurate.

manubi   July 18th, 2008 7:26 pm ET

McCain has not repudiated or denounced this comment. Is this the "change" that we can trust? Think again. McCain is just another politician who allows his buds and himself roam around and make very unfortunate comments, statements and mistakes. Let me make a list of them:

Gramm
Hagee
Falwell
Parsley
Loren Davis
Cunningham
La Raza
Fiorina

and now this fear mongering 527 fool Bud???

Carol   July 18th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

Why is this controversal? This is the truth spoken. The very definition of Islam is submission.

D-MI   July 18th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

This makes me want to go to Obama's website and pledge some more money... except that I already did that very thing this morning when I read about McCain's "socialist" comments (...'cause he might just be right...)

What angers me is that nobody is bothering to point out the obvious, smack-yourself-in-the-head flaw with this whole "Well, we can't PROVE that Obama is a muslim..." nonsense:

So what if he is? Am I to understand that the republicans would like to toss out Freedom of Religion along with the other rights they've decided we can do without? Say he is a muslim: are they implying that muslim's don't have the the same rights as christians? Or jews? Ask a republican the next time they bring that up. Make them explain how we send people half-way around the world to die for "liberty and democray" in Iraq, but they want to do away with those same ideals here...

Hypocrits for Obama   July 18th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

Once again the hypocrisy of the Obama followers is showing:

Call Hillary any name in the book.
Label those who disagree with you as racist.
Insult others.
Demean, mock and debase Hillary and her supporters...
Defend the hateful rants of Rev Wright as freedom of speech.

Defend the ugly comments against Hillary and America made by Michelle Obama as cool and true and freedom of speech.

BUT do not say anything against Obama or Michelle- that is disrespectful and unfair.

Don't speak out against our sworn enemies- that is bigotry.

Practice the tolerence that you preach- be kinder and more respectful to your fellow Americans and your fellow democrats... then you can cry foul at any perceived hatred.

phil   July 18th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

I don't love McCain BUT, Unfortunately, the Koran does indeed require that all peoples in Muslim lands either convert to Islam ( i.e. "kneel" ) or to live in segregated communities known as "Dimi's" where they are taxed and enjoy less rights. It is a simple fact that Christians and Jews in Muslim countries have been forced to live in this fashion for centuries. Read the Koran or a history book if you don't believe me.

You guys at CNN are being grossly dishonest in order to cater to the Muslims.

joaquin   July 18th, 2008 7:22 pm ET

Dang these old warriors are ignorant. In the rush to "talk tough" couldn't someone explain the word "Muslim" to Colonel Swiftboat? Are we at war with a country called Muslim-kovakia now?

Amen to this comment   July 18th, 2008 7:18 pm ET

What about it is controversial?

Don't the Islamist say so themselves? Don't they attack civilians? Don't they kill authors of books they label offensive? Don't they kill people for cartoons that depict religios topics? Don't they impose Sharia Law that demands beheadings and stoning?

Don't they try to bring the entire world that disagrees with them, down on its knees?

It true isn't it?   July 18th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

Why is it controversial?

The extremists themselves state that as their goal- destroy the evil satan... death to America...death to the West.

Islamists have killed people over writing a book or printing a political cartoon.

Why pretend otherwise?

Simple reality   July 18th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

All the hateful Obamabots- who rained vulgar, foul, insults on Hillary and her supporters- will now denounce this simple comment as bigotry.

How hypocritical.

Look at your own selves- calling other democrats racist, and calling fellow Americans dirty white trash, inbred rednecks, ignorant morons etc etc.

Chill out- FREE speech goes both ways. The extremist Muslims DO want to bring all NON-Muslims to their knees- the Koran tells them to eradicate all infidels and Jews where ever they find them.

SD Reader   July 18th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

I have no problem with someone speaking their mind. However, this is not someone McCain should allow to speak for him. This is a guy who alleges to be a super-American when in reality he was responsible for the attacks on Senator Kerry’s military service. I am proud of McCain’s service. I am proud of Kerry’s service. Attacking a war hero’s service is simply just wrong…McCain needs to pull this guy!

Obama 08: white, 60 year old woman   July 18th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

McCain cheerleaded for an illegal invasion to try to change the Muslim way of life and the way America is going who would want to emulate this country?

Good! I will not bow or kneel to the Islamic terrorists, either - and neither will my country with McCain.

I grew up in East Germany, which was under communist dictatorship, and I know first-hand what that's like - where family and friends suddenly "disappeared" in the middle of the night and were never seen or heard from again.

YOU people who compare America to the terrorists are truly ignorant and should be ashamed of yourselves! You need to spend just one week under a terrorist regime - you'd change your tune in a hurry.

Evil is REAL and thrives on complacency! And it is NOT called "America."

LILA MACH   July 18th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

Bud Day was a war hero...thank you for that Sir. Now, Bud Day is an out of touch senior citizen like John McCain and should NOT be looked upon as any kind of sage.

noclue   July 18th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

.McCain is just desperate and grasping to stay in the media while Obama makes History. The reason McCain could not get as much coverage while on his experience tripping is because basically he has nothing to say that folks really want to hear. Believe me, no one even wants to see him coming or going

Everything that he is promising are lies, none of them will be met because he cannot and will not win.

He is just being allowed to the best that he can until the final day to say "Adios Amigos it was a good race while it lasted"

Tara you comments as a black sister is so very sad, you talk just like McCain maybe you should run with him and his step ford Wife.

As for as Lou Dobbs well, he is just another prejudice red neck who is so obvious every night. I have all my friends changing channels until his segment is over.

However there seems to be an immediate angry and abusive backlash whenever someone exercises that freedom by saying something unpopular even if what is aid is factually correct.

More fear mongering by the Republicans. This is really getting old, and certainly is not working this time around. Have the Republicans ever heard of diplomacy? John McCain's regard on GI and Veterans affairs:

*AWOL for May 22nd vote on GI Bill. Expressed opposition to bill saying "it was too generous to Veterans".

*Voted against Bill in September that would have mandated adequate rest for troops between combat deployments.

*Voted No on $1.5-billion increase for Veteran Medical services (money would have come from closing corporate tax loophole).

*Voted No on establishing a trust fund to bolster underfunded Veteran Hospitals.

*Voted No in May 2006 against $20-billion allotment for expanding Veteran Medical Facilities.

*Voted No in April 2006 to increase Veteran Outpatient care.

*Voted No in March 2004 another $1.8-billion reserve for Veteran Medical care (again funded by closing corporate tax loopholes).

Bottomline, McCain is more interested in taking care of big business then the men and women he wrongly sent to fight in Iraq.

Keep in mind the BUSH administration is buddying up to some of of Obama's foreing policy ideas. So McCain is looking more and more out of touch on foreign policy.

Thankfully, all of these surrogates and advocates are all over 70 years old. Not that age is a problem, but the fact that the world is very different than in their day. My Dad was so afraid that people would be breaking into his house, so he had guns hidden everywhere for safety. They just can't accept that they aren't everybody's bullseye.

So much for detente, diplomacy, etc. McCain gets in office and he will continue to call Iran and all other Muslim countries, "our enemies", and they will refuse to talk to us, and through his lack of respect for someone different than him, he will get us into another war. The world is a different place than it was in '43. We have to learn to get along, something McCain is having difficulty with.

I respect the Congressional Medal of Honor, but recipient Mr. Bud Day is a total turn off. The fact he wears the Congressional Medal of Honor as he actively engages in this offensive, dishonorable behavior is a travesty. As a veteran I am personally offended.

On a lighter not this could be a possible cover for The New Yorker: Bud Day with his Congressional Medal of Honor as he is dressed in Muslim garb, in a Swift Boat with the name "Straight Talk Boatway" yelling offensive slurs and innuendos as ordinary appearing boaters are paddling like crazy to get away. :-)

“The threat we face is from radical Islamic extremism,"

For those who like to refer to Day's comments as being negative, hurtful, hateful, or any other slur, bear in mind that it was in fact RADICAL, EXTREMIST MUSLIMS that flew our planes into the WTC, and have actively engaged in acts of war against the United States any anyone allied with us. Please quit being so thin-skinned. For those Muslims who are neither radical, nor extremist, why are you offended by this comment? It obviously DOES NOT refer to you.

Mary-Beth Frazee   July 18th, 2008 6:13 pm ET

Does anybody remember what happened on 9/11? If Muslims are so "peaceful" why do they terrorize their own people (women, children) let alone those they see as their enemy? – Even young muslim men are afraid to defy muslim leaders. Well, American Christians are not afraid of them!!!!! That is why we need a brave American leader like McCain – not someone that more interested in what The World thinks of America than it's own citizens. Go get em, McCain!!!

This election will come down to a vote between people who think like Bud Day and people who reject his thinking. The McCain campaign cannot point to anything positive from the last 8 years of Republican rule so must instead disparage Obama. Sad that politics has become the art of making 51% of the voting public frightened and hateful of the remaining 49%. I hope we can get past this...

JK   July 18th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

Hi Jake,

I'm a Muslim. I am not an extremist. In the twenty-plus years since my conversion I have met no violent extremists–a few who were extreme in their thoughts, maybe, but they were only irritating. (There are people like that in every religion.)

It's not political correctness. I'm an American as much as you are. I was born here and so were my parents. I was raised Protestant but I chose Islam as a young adult. Oh, and in case it matters (it shouldn't) I'm white.

My six kids are also native-born Americans. There are millions of us. Doesn't our citizenship count as much as yours?

Johnny   July 18th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

There are more than a BILLION muslims in this world. I am ready to bet my paycheck that not ALL muslims are terrorists.

Can we go for at least one day without a single gaffe from McSame's campaign??

hk   July 18th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

Islam IS the threat...not radical islam, not fundementalist islam, not the "highjackers of islam". The threat is in the Quran, a "good" muslim
reads and follows the Quran. To do otherwise is blasphemy and blashemy is a punishable offense. Read what W. Churcill wrote of Islam. This is simply the continuation of a 1400 year old war against the infidels. Islam was spread by Muhammad and his followers by the sword and continues to this day. Religion is invoked by the islamic terrorists worldwide, NOT by the Americans fighting them. The intolerance of muslims toward anyone not in step with islam is remarkable. I urge all of you to read the Quran. "Converted" muslims are a joke, unless and until one has lived in a totalitarian islamic country under shari'a law then one is not a real muslim. Despite simply saying, "I'm a muslim." I am not a christian nor a jew and certainly not a muslim but an American and it is my right to critisize any and all religions. Despite the Quranic edict for muslims not to kill other muslims such is not the case. During the "so called golden age of islam" the so called rightly guided caliphs were murdered by other "loving" muslims. Sorry. enough.

Patrick   July 18th, 2008 6:01 pm ET

Stirring the pot in the middle East will NEVER bring peace and stability to the region or make us any safer at home. God Republicans are just clueless. The terrorist have stated in their audio and video rants that they will kill the infedels unless they fall to their knees and worship Allah. Its fact, look it up! You Obamites might want to pull your heads out of the sand long enough to look up facts before spewing your usual ignorance.

big craig   July 18th, 2008 6:00 pm ET

So, all he forgot to add was the word 'extremists'?!? Other than that, I don't hold his comments against us, considering he was probably led into this statement by earlier conversation about extermists or terrorists. A muslim practices Islam. 99% of the terrorists in that region are muslims. Save for John Walker Lindh-types & influxes of new recruits.

And yes, I am voting for McCain; I need someone who knows what and how to change, rather than just knowing how to repeat the word over and over from 2007 to November 2008. Like Pelosi, Barack knows a bad idea – it is any one that isn't his, trouble is, he has no original ideas, just disregard for anything from GOP or whitey.

Pelosi – grow a pair and let your ego down and drill, baby.

Obama wants to rid the world of nuclear weapons – WOW, does he also want everyone to be nice and stop using drugs and having sex.

Has he ever REALLY experienced the human nature of our world. We fight. We hate. We have sex. We drink the booze. And we always disagree.

The beauty of US and F-ing A is that we have the freedom to do these things. I love every legal American; even if you hate whitey. This honkey loves ya. Keep REAL freedom alive, brothers of all kinds of colors.

Doc Sinn   July 18th, 2008 6:00 pm ET

"All the deluded, anti-American Obamabots on this blog seem to care more about being nice to terrorists than calling them out for the despicable cowards they really are."

No one wants to be "nice to terrorists". What we WANT is for hate mongers to stop clouding our vision.

A terrorist is a terrorist. Period. Muslims dont own the patent on terror. Terrorist dont believe in Islam. They believe in terror. For them, Islam is just a tool to be used for their own ill gotten gains. True Muslims, Christians, etc believe in peace.

Open your eyes and see past your fear, and your true enemies will be easy to identify.

I suspect that there are people in the muslim world saying the same thing about christians. But consider this: Most of America's (Christianity's) bad experiences with the dreaded muslims have occurred within, say, the last 25-30 years. The bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut is probably a good starting point.

Their problems with us (Christians) go back to the Crusades. Big difference. Shouldn't be relevant today, you say? Old history??? Okay, how about the CIA engineering the ouster of Iran's democratically elected President Mossadeq in the 1950's. Aren't we the ones who are supposed to be supporting and defending democracy? Only when it suits us, I guess.

Like it or not, our chickens are coming home to roost.

The worst part is that simple-minded people like Day only fan the flames with their belligerent, undereducated ramblings. And worse still is the large number of even more simple-minded Americans cheering on this kind thinking. Then again, how many Americans think "professional wrestling" is real, or are unable to locate their home state on a map of the US.

It'll probably always be too much to expect them to ever locate, much less care about, a country like Bahrain.

Bud Day, his actions and views are a return to the Cold War mentality. In his active military service days he may have performed heroic actions for which he was recognized by his country. Today, as his distasteful and hateful participation in the 2004 Swift Boat Of Lies campaign, this Dinosaur rears its head and makes it more sounds of nonsense. If McCain is intent in loosing in November, his campaign will do itself well to continue embracing this well over-the-hill-warrior.

There we go. another uneducated dumb remark by an old white guy whose probably on more medications than the local pharmacist can provide.

Thats really like saying all americans love cheeseburgers...i mean what type of stupid rasict remark is that. Like Islam is the ONLY religiion with a radical wing of believers that like to run their mouth off.....

These tired old hen's need to go back to chasing golf balls. I don't care if he's a war hero or not, his remarks were out of line.

And in all honesty, when do you think any of these old white guys (who still cling to the belief that they can remain in power as some sort of rite) have ever really sat down and had a conversation with a muslim here in america. Maybe if they left their retirement homes and met some hard working muslims...they might find that we're their doctors, nurses, pharmacists, bankers...and yes even police officers and firefighters. Normal people just trying to earn a decent living.

Dems are stuck in the fix they rigged,

The rules of the primaries and caucuses were set up by the DNC, which was controlled by Clinton's supporters. If you don't believe me, try to remember which candidate had the most declared superdelegates at the start of the primary. It was not Obama; it was the "inevitable nominee" Hillary Clinton. The Rules and Bylaws Committee, which finally decided on how to seat the Michigan and Florida delegations and essentially ended Hillary's candidacy, had 13 Hillary supporters and 8 Obama supporters.

Stop threaten the rest of us that you won't vote for Obama. We know that because you kept on posting the same messages over and over, and CNN kept on posting them. Just remember Hillary can't win either, in 2012, without the support of Democrats who did not vote for her. She could not even win enough votes in the Democratic primary to fend off the Republicans and Independents who did not like her and voted for Obama, how is she going to win the general election, now or in 2012? These people vote in the general election too. Remember, most of Hillary's haters are not in the Democratic Party. They are in the Republican Party that has been demonizing the Clintons for years. Republicans have already started the campaign against Michelle Obama. They know how to attack a political spouse because they have had plenty of practice in the 1990s with Hillary.

Let me educate you.. 9/11 only happened because Bush allowed it to, so HE would have a justifiable excuse in his own mind to bomb bomb bomb, bomb Iraq... I ask you this, what do the Twin Towers and Pentagon have in common? NOTHING.. 1 is our military headquarters and the other is a capitalist made building. Before all you self-righteous, chest thumping McCain haters get too carried away about intolerance toward Muslims in this country, just remember that every time the Islam terrorists proclaim "Death to the Americans," they don't add "Except..........." They mean "all" Americans. To be sure there are good and bad in every ethnic group, but even in a political race, we Americans must stand up for each other and cut out the name-calling. I would really like for someone to tell us how many America-living Muslims rose up and publicly condemned the terrorists that attacked America, and continue to do so? If and when that ever happens, I honestly believe it will result in more tolerance for Muslim citizens by Americans. However, in America, what mafr it so great in the past was that citizens stood up and defended each other. That seems to be lacking more and more often.

CarlCO   July 18th, 2008 5:13 pm ET

What it the problem with the comment? The 911 folks were muslim. The folks we are fighting in Iraq and Afganistan are muslim. The leaders of Iran who vow to squash America are muslim.
True, not every muslim is bad, nor do we have a problem with them, although, they should publically denounce those who are intent in destroying our country.
In WWII, we were at war with Germans. Not everyone of them, but that's who (among others) we were at war with.
He didn't say we were at war with ALL muslims, nor that we want to wipe all of them out.
Get a grip folks, and quit looking to be insulted.

Steve in Santa Fe, NM   July 18th, 2008 5:12 pm ET

Funny, but what he fears, being forced to kneel to a Muslim god, is the very thing I fear... but from a Christian god.

Just because they are Muslim, does not make them terrorists. Why do people often forget this. Afterall, this is a country that subscribes to the freedom of religion doctrine.

MUSLIM does not equal TERRORIST.

Bill   July 18th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

Let's be fair: McCain wants more war, Obama wants more economic recession. They both have short-term goals that are easier to achieve if things get worse for us, one way or the other. Obama must be disappointed that the success of the surge in Iraq is not an illusion and will likely hold through the election. McCain must be disappointed that we're negotiating with Iran.

Devin   July 18th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

The truth hurts. Yes, Im sure there are peaceful Muslims, but the cult itself is bent on forced and violent (if need be) global control.

I love how McKane's campaign keeps shooting themselves in the foot over and over. All these mishaps just take time away from the real campaign that Johnny boy should be focusing on. The way I see this, McKane cannot keep his staff under control and have them promote a uniform message. If he cannot organize a group of 50 advisers how is he going to run a country of 300 million?

Is this what the Republican party is all about now? What happened to winning an election by speaking the truth and letting americans know what you have to offer? Hey Bud, thank you for your service to our country, as I always am sure to thank all veterans, however, I can not forgive you or the John Kerry swift boat attacks on his character. Although you may debate his service record, there is one thing you can not debate...John Kerry was in Vietnam whereas George Bush was not. Unfortunately John Kerry did not ardently state this in his Presidential bid, which could have helped get him elected and our country would not have fallen in to the "dark ages" we now find ourselves in. Thanks Bud !

Good job liberals....national security is not a popularity contest...being nice to terrorist organizations and those that support them will never ever work and you are on drugs if you think it will

Chuck   July 18th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Okay should we allow McCain and his cronies perpetuate the fear of terrorism as well as the apparent deep seated hate in some Americans for any religion except their own. These comments are discusting, ugly, hateful and completely unacceptable for any political figure especially from the camp or surrogats of a presidential hopeful.
McCain should publically appologize to all muslims and completely disaccoiate himself from Mr Day, the swift boaters and the 527 group.
Day is an old, die hard hateful man that has no place talking for any one except himself and then he should keep his mouth shut.

jake   July 18th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

I AM SICK AND TIRED OF THE POLITICAL CORRECTNESS POLICE THAT THINK WE CANNOT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT ANYBODY ANYMORE. WHY SHOULD MCCAIN OR HIS ADVISOR APOLOGIZE? IF ANYBODY HAS A PROBLEM WITH THAT STATEMENT THEY CAN GO BACK TO WHERE THEY CAME FROM OR MOVE TO CHINA OR RUSSIA WHERE YOU ALSO CANNOT SPEAK YOUR MIND.

Brian   July 18th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Does the McCain camp want more war? Making jokes about killing Iranians and now this? Is he that blind to the tragedy of war? As a military man and POW he of course shouldn't be, but how he's acting now makes me wonder how much he remembers that war is nothing to joke about or to provoke enemies for no good reason.

Warren Hamrick   July 18th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Look around in Iraq and Iran and most of the Middle East. You don't see many Christians getting to practice their faith there. If they do, it is done in secret or they have to PAY .. Muslims can practice theirs here. That's the big difference in Religion, not Race, in the Middle East. Religion is a very BIG part of their government. America has some things that do not need to be changed, but perserved.

amy   July 18th, 2008 4:56 pm ET

you know what i think is ironic? that a bunch of islamic radical extremists attacked the twin towers and suddenly all and only muslims are terrorists in the eyes of americans. but the fact that our government goes over to afghanistan and iraq and drops bombs on innocent people is "defending the country" and NOT terrorism? if WE think THEY are terrorists, don't you think THEY think WE are terrorists? we are doing the same thing over there but probably to an even larger extent.

whatever happened to the rest of the terrorists in the world? it's NOT only muslims. colombia? israel? sri lanka? cambodia? if you dont even know what im talking about (with the exception of maybe israel, then maybe go look up some history books). do none of these places even ring a bell? terrorism is invoking fear or terror in another person. i can sure as hell bet that we are doing the same thing in afghanistan and iraq.

it doesnt matter where you're from or what religion you profess to follow. do you think that the taliban and al-qaeda are really following islam? no, they are interpreting the religion the way they want. they are using and abusing it for their own personal benefit.

Isai Damier, Florida   July 18th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

For the McCain camp it's a matter of expediency: there are only 2% Muslims in America, the Evangelical Christians hate those Muslims, so McCain's camp has made a tactical decision to bash the Muslims to get the Evangelicals to agree with them on something. McCain's Pastors - Rod Parsley and John Hagee - have both bashed American Muslims in their church.

You know, one of them first senators to speak up against the antics of the "Swift Boat Veterans for Truthiness" was John McCain. Even he admitted to the attacks as being dishonest and dishonorable.

Noone who carried out the attacks in the SBVT proved Kerry to be a liar, and virtually none had first-hand knowledge of the experiences w/ Kerry either. Some of the claims were even contradicted amongst members, and w/ vets that actually witnessed the incidents.

TruthSquad? BS!   July 18th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

I'm worried about John McCain. He surrounds himself with morons, lobbyists, liars and crooks. What happened to the straight-talking maverick of 2000?

Newsflash: not all Muslims are terrorists.
Newsflash: Christianity has had its extremist moments (anyone remember the Inquisition, the Crusades and/or the Salem Witch hunts?)
Newsflash: Religious extremism is the ultimate terrorism. Any religion.

BTW, I see Phil "Nation of Whiners" is back to being BFF and economic adviser for the McCain campaign. Some more Truth-saying, no doubt. Another flip-flop, John? Or will you just gag him so "he doesn't speak" for you?

Chuck   July 18th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

I might agree that there are some radical Islamic extremist terrorists who would like to see America weakened and/or defeated. But what is this about Muslims wanting us to kneel? There are a lot of Muslims that are U.S. citizens. Do they want the rest of us to kneel. Do all Muslims want us to kneel. I think that ole Bud Day speak with a predjudice over-generalize forked tongue.

Typical McCain supporter. Everything to them is black and white. No gray areas. No room for differences. All Muslims are murderous terrorists. All African Americans are radical rappers. All Native Amercians wish to scalp white men. All women belong in the kitchen, etc., etc. Now that is how Bud Day and his buddy John Mccain really think about this world and the people who live in it. Over-genealized preudjudiced categorizations. They are unable to think with any deeper,. Unable to think with any sensitivity or empathy .

Toby Hill   July 18th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

It was Muslims that created 9/11. It was Muslims that destroyed the barracks in Beirut. It was Muslims that took Americans hostage in Iran. It's almost always Muslim so at some point it becomes worthless to pick the bad apples out when it's more practicle to just throw out the whole bunch. The Muslims brought this on themselves by not taking care of their own problems and now they're stuck with the stigma.

Independent   July 18th, 2008 3:59 pm ET

This is just another tactic that republican trying to create fears and get vote. Those extremist are killing Muslim people as well in Muslim countries. Those extremist using religions name to fulfill their ill desire. Yes Muslims are anger against USA because of their blind support toward Israel’s illegal occupations of Palestine (core issue) and now Iraq. I think USA should review their foreign policy to be neutral so that those extremist can’t use any excuse to brainwash young Muslim and turn them against USA and other Muslims.

What"s the problem, with telling the truth? that is what "they "said...........now, If you don't want to,or you are "to unwilling" to believe "them", and take "them" at their words; then "you wait" til "they" confront "you", and want to chop "your" head off....................but.myself; I'm not that dumb, or too willing, to take that chance! funny thing you talk about theocracy, because plenty of Christian groups are promoting that we should have a type of Christian regime, rather then keep church and state separated..

Scary how Obama can fail this NOV- in a year when no Republican can win and no Democrat can fail.

But that is the price to pay for selecting the nominee who was NOT elected by the voters.

Thanks Oprah, Caroline, CNN, MSNBC, Pelosi, Dean and the DNC.

Now we true democrats have NO good choice. We will NEVER vote for the thief- the one that destroyed our party and divided the democrats.

Freedom and justice is too important to allow this travesty to go unchallenged.

Big D   July 18th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

McCain's new campaign advisor Schmidt must be so frustrated that both McCain and his surrogates keep getting off-message. Remember that they were going to relaunch and keep tighter control on their message? Instead it's like they just say any random thought that pops into their head, whether it's related to the current sitation or not. Yesterday McCain said 'we have succeeded in Iraq', today he says to expect spectacular attacks later and now this from a surrogate. So just what is McCain's current position on the Iraq situation, because his campaign is right now just putting out any old random idea to see how it goes over.

Is anyone trying to make this guy "kneel" in the USA? Why does he want to kill all Muslims – especially in their own homeland?

Max   July 18th, 2008 3:56 pm ET

An even greater threat to the security of this country is to see the world through the rigid mind of xenophobia and military agression. I respect Mr. Day's service, and heroism, but jeez Louise, it doesn't make him an expert on geopolitics.

Let these 527s waste money on the 'fear factor' vote–it already belongs to McCain.

The fact is ISLAM/MUSLIMS and Jews are used by these politicians in the last few campaigns than before; Did it help ? They should focus on IMPORTANT issues that we are facing here like Gas price, Economy, Grocery price Increase, Job loss etc., rather talking about Islam/Muslims/Jews... Shame!!!

Eddie   July 18th, 2008 3:54 pm ET

And who took the twin towers down?? And other bombs in the New York area??? And who wants to bow down to the terrorism and have in the past? Who wants to make slaves here in the U.S. ?? Is it Ted Kennedy & Kerry,??? And now Obama.? McCain was held as prisoner, and who should understand freedom better than McCain, not Obama for sure. Obama wants to give the U.S. way in taxing us for the U.N. ect. I hope Ms. Rice could be V.P. with McCain. She is everything Obama is not, to being in the potical area and saving the U.S. freedoms. Once the freedoms are gone you will not get them back, Like Cuba and some in South America. Think careful, before you make a choice.

Geez! Just cause the guy was a POW certainly does not make him a leader or a spokesperson.

It is good to honor and respect those that serve either in justified or unjust conflicts. But it does not mean we have to make them into idols or believe every word they utter as truthful.

But.... then you read these blogs and realize the simple minded people that flock around and agree with such stupidity. Maybe we should at least have a minimum intelligence to vote. Such low-information fanatics are what the likes of Hitler in power.

The democrats played with the sanctity of the vote and they manipulated the democratic process and they sabotaged their own best candidate.

Thinking this was the year that EVEN an unqualified, inexperienced, cocky, self-serving, egotistical elitist COULD win.

So much for just going to the booth and looking for the big "D" lever to pull. America is not that far left. We want Hillary Clinton. We will NOT ever vote for Obama.

Insult us or threaten us or force us- we will NOT bow down to the installed puppet nominee.

JC   July 18th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

Why do people just blindly attack anything that is said (on both sides)? For those who don't really know anything about Islam – the faith advocates a permanent revolution against all non-Muslims until the whole world is Islamic. Most Muslims interpret this as a peaceful revolution. Islamic Fundamentalists interpret this as a violent revolution against all non-Muslims.

McCain is no hero, his acts against the USA during his time as a POW prove the exact opposite. Hero's do not compromise their oaths, nor do they degrade their country while held captive, that is what enemies do. Hero my butt!! He got shot down due to incompetence and turned on his country. It is amazing how political analyst sit on all of your shows and give thier opinoins on all the topics of Barrack Obama and don't anaylize this countries horrible past. To ask Senator Barrack Obama for any more history than what he has is not only funny but sad. If I recall this country it was not until National Voting Rights Act of 1965 outlawed discriminatory voting practices that had been responsible for the widespread disenfranchisement of African-Americans in the United States. So please stop asking for experience and the relating it to time served. It wasn't until 1965 that all minorities actually had the freedom to vote any way we wanted bieng republican or democrate, so for analyst like Lisa Sanchez who support thier party but not the country who created these parties stop!!! Becuase if that was you up there and they ask you about experience, I hope you pick up a history book and see that even those who had all this experience and wisdom serving all those years, that even they( our fore-fathers) made foolish choices. So change is not so bad!!!!

McCain talks about running a clean campaign while at the same time he surrounds himself with the mud slinging CREEPS from the BUSH/ROVE camp. It really does not make a difference what McCain (or surrogates) say or do. The media will give it very brief coverage then go directly back to hammering things about Obama that are not really an issue but if you look at themt from twenty-five different ways, under three microscopes while standing on one leg, come possibly be strecthed to be an issue.

McCain jokes about bombing people, killing people and yesterday it was reported that McCain, in the past when running for Senate, told jokes involving women being rape and beaten. If that was Obama, he would have to leave the country..

It is so ridiculous these days it is funny.

He is right. Islamic extremism has a simple policy – you agree with them for you die. There is nothing wrong with what this gentleman has said. Look around the world, in almost all conflicts one of the participants are muslims. Why is that? We may not like the implications, but this old man is right.

Sensible Cape Coral FL   July 18th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

I am horrified at the ignorance of my fellow Americans and more especially at their eagerness to display it.
Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in the world so it behooves us to understand it and YES even appreciate it. Fewer than one percent of its followers are fanatics and it is just plain stupid to condemm all Muslims because of them. Islam is actually a very beautiful religion if we would only take to trouble to learn about it.

Oh, that's beautiful. And on top of this, McCain is now trying to mock Obama for going to Iraq. McCain dared Obama to visit Iraq, and then as soon as Barak takes up the challenge and goes there, McCain starts trying to make fun of him for going there.

This is all so transparent and weak. I'm starting to think McCain doesn't even want be president. And I can't really blame him, considering that a lot of Bush's disasters are still in "seed" form, and McCain wouldn't want to have to take credit for them.

Pat F   July 18th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Although he is correct in that radical Islamic extremism is a threat, it does not follow that staying in Iraq decreases that threat,

What is really pathetic is he still insists that the Swift Boaters were telling the truth when they were really exposed as a bunch of liars. Of course that was never played up by the press because it is much easier just to report the accusations than to do the research and then have to admit everything was just a bunch of hype.

See U.S. Senate candidate Al Franken's book, "The Truth" for the story of the degraceful deceit of the swiftees. who hated what Kerry represented so much that they believed their own fabrications instead of those with actual knowledge of what occured.

He may be a hero, but he's an ignorant one. I can't imagine this guy in Vietnam, not knowing or caring which Vietnamese were on our side and which were the enemy combatants. There was a difference then, just as there is now, and Bud Day's view only expresses the ignorance of a few Americans who don't/won't take the time to learn about those differences.

dEMOBRAT   July 18th, 2008 3:36 pm ET

Maybe we could 'swift boat' Bud Day, McCain, and the rest of the group back to 'Nam. What a sorry bunch of worthless losers – even if he was decorated with many medals.

Unfortunately, this man is deranged. If McCain doesn't remove him, it speaks poorly of his judgment.

The majority meets in the middle.   July 18th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

That is why true democrats are wanting to bring Hillary back at the convention in Denver.

Neither Obama nor McCain are desirable.

The ONLT true, unselfish, dedicated, champion of the people is HRC.

Without her as nominee, the democratic party WILL lose in Nov, and will be destroyed for decades to come.

Poor Dan . . . you think all Muslims are the same, too, doncha? Day said "Muslims." It was the damage control guy trying to clean up the spill who said "radical Muslims." Sure it's not radical Christians?

Confused   July 18th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

I'm confused, the CNN report says he won the medal of freedom? What? Yet the picture says he won the Medal of Honor. Does CNN even know what a Medal of Honor is? I would be surprised if they did, yes very surprised indeed!

Ah the good old GOP scare tactics.

Tubby The Tuba   July 18th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

Now CNN is flip flopping; first McCain cries he doesn't get reported on like Obama, then all we get is what McCain said or did. Try a balance.Don't support either candidate, just report the news unbiased. That is all any of us want.

marvinj   July 18th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

John McCain more of the same Grand Old Party = Good Old Boy's
What kind of change does anyone really expect from McCain. If McCain gets into office the same greedy people Bush has help get richer and richer (American gouging Americans). These are the same people McCain has already surrounded himself with....MORE OF THE SAME .....

Don't forget they are getting richer off of these wars while hard working americans suffer because of these old white men greed and lack of morality. It's not financially beneficial for the GOP to end these wars....

andy   July 18th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

Thanks Bud, for another fine contribution to American politics. Without the success you and your like-minded Republican advocates had with the Swift Boat campaign, we might actually not be in quite such a tremendous mess as we are today. And yet for some reason, many voters will still think your insight is of some value. Maybe it's not the Muslims (does that include the many American citizens who follow Islam, yet abhor terrorism as much as you do?) we should be so afraid of.

Rob Moss   July 18th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

There wasn't one ounce of "truth" to the "Swift Boat Veterans" and there is not any truth or legitimacy to this man. He and they are liars of the highest degree. The Karl Rove machine is fast at work and the only thing to compare to them is Joseph Goebbels and the "Big Lie"..."tell it long enough and loud enough and people will believe it."

Viet Nam era survivor   July 18th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

Bud Day is a decorated Viet Nam vet. John Kerry is a decorated Viet Nam vet. If John Kerry's medal is bogus, then how do we know Bud Day's medal (or any medal awarde in Viet Nam) isn't bogus?

Arch D. Vaughn   July 18th, 2008 3:33 pm ET

Being retired military, I agree with the senator, he knows what fanatics are like. Muslims is a a way of life thats not like our way it's their way or else. They do not except other religions, they have committed an act of war on us, so we have defend our selves or else.

Bring back Hillary Clinton and give this country a fighting chance to succeed.

Muslims are bad people out to get us. Yet, it was a Christain President that lead a Christian army that caused the death of over 800,000 Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan alone.

Bud Day is right. All those Muslims in Vietnam held him as a POW.

Thousands of Turks died in Korea with the Christians.

AND it is a Muslim in Saudi A. that our good old President goes to every year and kisses his face.

McCain mistakes are becoming over the top. Another thing can McCain make a speech pointing out his plan without attacking Presidental Elect Barack Obama. Today McCain is attacking Obama's plan to take a trip to Iraq and the other countries. McCain is using pshycology by repeating himself 2 -3 times a pshycology used on the minds of people to get the brainwash or point to stick. Now my opinion of McCain about the trip is that he should of took the high road in congratulating Obama's efforts. McCain seem to never take the high road instead he come of as a god attacking everything Obama attempt to do. He's DAM IF HE DO OR DAM IF HE DON'T. What a ignorant Senator!!!!!!!!! OBAMA JAN. 20, 09.

Super delegate NJ   July 18th, 2008 3:31 pm ET

Don't radical Islamist extremists clearly state that?

You know... death to America. Death to the great Satan.... anyone who is NOT Muslim is an infedel...

Did they NOT state that they would bring us down in Iraq?

Theocracy is NEVER the way.

Church and State MUST be kept separate.

Who wants Islamic rule, Sharia Law, and brutally enforced worship of a certain God in a certain way by ALL of humanity?

Not this true democrat for liberty and freedom of religion and freedom of speech.

Obama seems willing to abandon both just so HE can be the Supreme Leader- after all he is infallible and has perfect judgement.

What is this, "Fear Friday"? First McCain talking about spectacular attacks during the election, now this windbag telling us all muslims want to kill us. Talk about what really matters, like how I'm going to be paying off my student loans for the next 30 years just so I could get a decent job.

John McCain can distance himself or denounce the comments made by his friends, but make NO MISTAKE that these are his friends adn they are only saying what McCain cannot say himself if he has any hope of getting elected in November.

DO NOT BE FOOLED that he does not believe the same as they do. If he were not a candidate he would be saying it himself. BUSH and McCain......one and the same.

McCain is no less dangerous, even more so, because he has a brain.

Educated and Insightful   July 18th, 2008 3:29 pm ET

Do you "Arab Haters" not realize that the Muslim and Christian religions are extremely similar on many different levels, and that is why the extremists are so at odds over who is right and who is wrong? They are essentially the same religion, only one of them became the strongest after the Crusades and the other did not, which is why Christianity is the "popular" religion. It won out. Read your History people

CMSgt Preston   July 18th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

Who is going to protect the "Truth" from these "Truth Squads." They did a filthy hatchet job on Sen Kerry's military record now they are trying to scare up more rants and ravings. I'm a retired military vet and these guys shame me. Now naturally I'm not as old as these crypt keepers are but I'm white and I have two sons in the military with three tours in Iraq between them. I was in during the first Persian Gulf War, stationed in Saudi. These old jet jocks during Vietnam (I was also in during Vietnam) are kind of clueless as to the Middle East, or even a sense of fair play. It really is dispicable for any military vet to cast dispersions on another military vets career as long as they were both awarded honorable discharges. Military service being denigrated for political advantage is the same horror to me as someone burning the American Flag. Lower than low!

Kell Ca   July 18th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

Brad   July 18th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

If the McCain campaign thinks this sort of strategy will win in November, it is very misguided. McCain got the nomination becasue he was seen as more level headed and in touch with the concerns of voters. After he gets the nomination he reverts to Rove-style tactics? If he keeps it up until November, he has no shot.

Linda31   July 18th, 2008 3:28 pm ET

From someone who has known McCain for a very long time. Is that what he thinks of all Muslims? Because not all Muslims are like those we are fighting and it is very dangerous to group people together.

ABC News’ Z. Byron Wolf reports from Capitol Hill:

The McCain campaign criticism of Sen. Barack Obama’s hearing record on Capitol Hill led us to put the shoe on the other foot.
It turns out that presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain, has attended even fewer Afghanistan-related Senate hearings over the past two years than Obama’s one. Which is a nice way of saying, McCain, R-Ariz., the top Republican on the Senate Armed Service Committee, has attended zero of his committee’s six hearings on Afghanistan over the last two years.

TGIF! Happy Hour must have come early today for the McCain talking heads or they are indeed morons. Impossible for the repubs to tackle the issues. Why?
Because they have failed.
Now they are spreading fear and scare tactics on a grand scale.
When all else failed for the repubs, fear is the only motivating factor that lead to hate and demonizing your opponents.

But I am doubtfull it will work this time, not after the last 8 years of the repubs rule. No more repubs this year.

So is that what "the Muslims" said? Hmm. Over the past twenty-five years I've met thousands of Muslims from all parts of the world and I have never heard one who said that. It's not in the Koran and Muhammad didn't say it, either.

We have suffered for eight years under the reign of one ignorant administration. Let's learn from our mistakes and not elect another.

Obviously, there was a meeting at McCain HQ last night where they decided that Johnny Boy's declaration of victory in Iraq yesterday might make everyone too warm, fuzzy and safe-feeling to want to vote for a Republican, so they resolved to get out there today and scare the Hell out of everyone about terrorism.

First Johnny Boy with his warnings of "spectacular" acts of terrorism in Iraq, and now this cretin Bud Day demonizing the entire Muslim world with a broad brush.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT IS MEANT WHEN SOMEONE OBJECTS TO THE "POLITICS OF FEAR"! Right out of the Karl Rove playbook!

Please, America: Don't fall for it this time!

Angry old white men....I hope this time the American people will say enough is enough of this kind of ignorance that breeds hatred. I also hope McSame makes a definitive statement about this idiot as well as this kind of campaigning. And, Congress should have the guts to shut down these 527 groups.

Dan   July 18th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

WOW the ignorance of the posting here. I guess none of you really read the article, typical dems. He said that, "The threat we face is from radical Islamic extremism." Not all Muslims like the way you try to twist it. You people make me sick. Why don't you all just leave the country, we would have a much better place to live in. I know, you can move to the middle-east and hang out with all the nice Muslims. That is until they rape and murder you.

Don't get it twisted...Some people will actually fall for ads like this...They wouldn't do it if it didn't work to some extent...I'd love to believe that people are smart enough not to fall for the fear-mongering tactics...but I wouldn't be realistic...

Please be smart, people...

Please, for our sake Americans – get out there and VOTE in November. The Republican dirty tactics machine is just revving up, and you better believe that they will be out there on Election Day trying to throw monkey wrenches into the ballot boxes .

GET OUT THERE AND VOTE IN OVERWHELMING NUMBERS SO THEY CAN'T MESS THIS ONE UP!!!!

Concerned in Alabama   July 18th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Fear monger is what fear monger does. Will the republicans ever learn. They try to scare the american people into voting for them.

Mr. McCain, when General Wesley Clark made the comment that just because you were shot down doesn't make you a good president.....he was right! You don't have to have serve in the military or get shot down or visited the middle east to be a good president......just ask McBush and the others.

You republicans are always trying to use the fear tactics to get votes.

Sorry, but OBAMA will be president! The american people can't stand another moment with this administration or the republicans.

Mean-while back at McWar’s Iranian death camp, McWar pushes his final solution for all Persians and Iranians.

The Mc Pol Pot Regime has a new plan for Iran
McWar now wants to commit genocide on all Iranians and Persians. His new plan includes nicotine gas chambers and giant potash plants for there burned up bodies. This man does not care about human life at all. Just his family fortune and his wealthy lobbyist friends

Just because you don't want to believe that forced conversion is an integral element of Islam, doesn't mean it isn't.

I can't imagine anything more hypocrital than a Swiftboater professing to be against unfair attacks on anyone's military service.
God don't like hypocrites and Mr. Day is going to find that out one of these days. Hope you like it hot, Bud.

What a piece of garbage. I respect other military vets (active or retired) but revoke any appreciation for what he did for this country (if anything–let's do a little research on his 'swift' record). Bud Day's service means nothing to me. Shoulda kept your ignorance to yourself.

If those radicals really hate America as McCain wants us to believe, how come it is easier for our soildiers to walk up and down their streets than it is for them to get across the Atlantic. Reality is that they hate how the U.S is supporting Israel, even though we know Israelites murdered lots of them and seized their land. But we expect them to be quiet.

sorry JOHN, we aren't fighting the entire muslim world, we're fighting a small group of people who killed 4000 of our people. at least obama has it right, we need to catch osama bin laden, not wipe out an entire race of people.

DJ in TX   July 18th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

This has got to stop. Yes, the terror groups are RADICAL Islamists. Not all Muslims are radical. We have great American Muslims right here in the U.S.

His statement would infer that ALL Muslims feel the same about the US. People, I fought in the Gulf War with several Muslims. They prayed to Allah everyday and picked up an M16 ready to defend America. He would have had my back in an attack as I had his. We were both AMERICAN soldiers.

Did he have some feelings about fighting Muslims? Of course, but he also knew he was American and had to follow the orders handed down to him.

This is what is wrong with America. We tend to lump all into one group. Let's make sure we distinguish Radical Islamic terrorist vs just people who worship in the Islamic faith. Muslims come in all nationalitites, inclduing Americans (I work with a white guy who is Muslim).

judy, Wisconsin   July 18th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

There he is again–Bud Day–of the Swift Boat liars, part of McCain's so called "Truth Squad" (They do love their slogans.) Just goes to show the quality of the people who advise McLiar. The vial lies against John Kerry, in 2004, a war hero who came back and protested another stupid war, were sickening and now they are at it again. I hope the people won't continue to be fooled by these charletans.

Craig in Washington   July 18th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

I predict that mean-spirited liberals will jump all over this guy in a spasm of self-righteous political correctness. Speaking of mean spiritedness (and I see that that is a basic characterist of liberals...), now I know why Michelle Obama said that America is a mean spirited country. Why are military veterans getting involved in political campaigns?! They use their service as a wedge to advance political views, this goes against the honor and duty of the military and should be seen as a disgrace to all Americans in uniform.

Anyone who votes for this war monger and his rant every day about victory deserves to wallow in the misery and increased terrorism the Bush administration has caused the last 8 years
Anyone who supports him and Bushs immoral and illegal war. Take a close look at the next vet whose face is burned beyond recognition because Bush decided to go into war for his own selfish reasons *Oil and revenge for Sadam* for nearly killing his daddy, over 4000 troops killed, thousands maimed for life. 200000 innocent iraqis killed and 2 million displaced and then ask yourself if you even have a conscience to support MCBUSHs continuing the war
How many more honorable troops have to die and be maimed , how many more innocent iraqis in the name of McSames so called excuse *Victory*
Anyone in that administration who supported this immoral war and continues to and that includesMCBush Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and yes even pretty face Rice does not have a moral fibre in their body...that may seem harsh but its REALITY ....
kudos to anyone hopefully Obama who steps up to the plate and tries to end this war bc its morally responsible that not one more troop die in this FIASCO.

You see. I told you that John McCain and all of the other POW's who support him and the war are war mongers. That's all they know. They are thinking in the past. That's normal for them. I have no problem with that but I do have a problem with them always wanting to fight. Fighting is NEVER the answer however this country has to protect itself. But come on, these old men need to stop and think about trying to set an example before they leave this world. GEEEEZZZZZ......

keep giving these people the microphone...they only benefit the Obama campaign. There are many new truths people like this need to start accepting...starting with the old scare tactics will no longer work except on the ignorant. Instead of trying to change their minds we took a new avenue...we brought in new voters far more educated and more open to the reality of living in today's World. Old solutions no longer work.

Trouble is everyone knows how well Mr. Day's 527 group manipulated the voters in 2000 and 2004. In speaking with voters, I have found not one voter liked feeling they were played like a piano. No one likes to feel manipulated. It's 2008 Mr. Day. Your game is up and you are out of time. Furthermore, your candidate Mr. McCain is out of gas.

Would someone please give Mr. Day a rocking chair and a piece of wood to whittle.
