Al Gore says Hillary Clinton's campaign helped the country move forward.
Al Gore says Hillary Clinton's campaign helped the country move forward.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Al Gore said Sunday that Hillary Clinton's campaign for the White House helped change society's perception of women.

But the former vice president, who has endorsed Barack Obama, demurred when asked whether the New York senator was treated unfairly during the campaign because of her gender.

"I think that women often face these kinds of challenges, of course, in our society," Gore said in a broadcast interview.

"But I think that she did an amazing job in changing that, as I think Senator Obama and Bill Richardson, where Hispanics are concerned, also made it possible for our country to move on into the 21st century and say, `Wait a minute, these old things that held us down in the past, we're now within sight of a time when we can move beyond that,"' Gore said.

Obama defeated Clinton for the Democratic nomination in a matchup that featured a black man against a woman. Obama clinched the nomination in June, becoming the first black candidate to represent a major party in the race for the presidency.

Some of Clinton's supporters complained that she was the victim of sexism, particularly in the media.

Richardson, the governor of New Mexico, also ran for the nomination, though he dropped out early in the race. He has since endorsed Obama and campaigned for him.

Clinton has pledged to campaign for Obama, though their relationship remains the subject of much speculation. Some Clinton supporters, whom Obama will need to win in the fall, have called for Obama to tap Clinton as his running mate.

Obama, however, has been mum about the process of choosing a vice presidential candidate.

Gore served eight years as Bill Clinton's vice president. He said Sunday that he considers the Clinton to be good friends, though he said he has not spoken with either of them in several months.

Gore appeared on "Meet the Press" on NBC.

Clinton faced a negative and sexist Obama-campaign, but lost because enough senior Dems did their best to prevent her from winning the vote. By flying under the radar as an underdog Obama got enough delegates to warrant a gift from party leaders: Obama had the superdelegates, lobbyist money and tricks of party seniors to fix delegates where votes were missing.

Still, Clinton won the popular vote and her success in spite of it all cannot be ignored. Obama needs to be more humble. Bridging the divids starts with respecting the people and picking Clinton as VP.

Of course she was treated unfairly. How do you think 0bama got his presumptive Affirmative Action candi?

Do you CNN people really expect Al Gore will complain about a more qualified candidate was treated unfairly while his party selected a sure loser in November?

By changing perceptions you must refer to Obama's depiction of Hillary as a " racist, post-menopausal, fat lady and old washington insider Ho who feels entitled to the throne"?…

Sorry democrats… you liberals turned out to be quite sexist, filthy, intolerant, insulting bigots…..

Now the real democrats who loved the party ideals have done gone.

The "new" democrats are intolerant, name-calling, hatful people who try to FORCE others to vote their way.

I no longer believe in the democratic party.

Yeah Gore comes out of the woodwork when drilling for oil is possibility. He starts running his mouth about Clinton like he knew what she was going through when everybody was bashing her during the primaries. He's a two-faced snake like Richardson is. They both turned their back on Clinton and now they come out and say what a great race Clinton ran.
Hillary Clinton is a fighter. She held her head up and never gave up.
Clinton won the primary and that's the fact-Jack.
That's OK though because what comes around goes around. You hear that Gore.

CNN had a great program a few nights ago comparing Barack and Michelle Obama with John and Cindy McCain! Wow, what a contrast of early underachievement (lets face it, CNN said that Obama was an underaccomplished student until he got into Ivy League schools, and I wonder how he got there!!!!), anger, and hate for our institutions and our country, vs. elegance, experience, patriotism and a couple that have already achieved much in their lifetime! Thanks CNN for painting a clear contrast between these two candidates and their wives!!!!

The power of women for Hillary 08   July 20th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

Al Gore said Obama needs women for his "fall" in 08 you got the right. Women is going to have difficulty voting for an empty suit/ sweet talker looking for power and history at any cost/ price. His campaign cares only for people with money/ highly educated like they stated many times and no brain ( they can not see the feet of the ladder that is about to break, they just care for the top….etc ). construction builder that forgot to build the base!!!! the greatest AND BESTcandidate HILLARY CLINTON, now McCain 08.

Shannon, if the right to chose is important to you, there's only one vote that makes sense in November. Same goes for all Hillary supporters who are still in mourning at seeing their strong candidate lose to an even stronger one — if you truly care about women's issues, you cannot possibly vote for McCain, and you cannot possibly help McCain's cause by not voting at all. This may not be the choice you wanted to make, but it's the only one that's reasonable and mature. Life's a compromise.

The democrats will feel my pain, the pain of millions of lifelong democrats and Hill's pain… this Nov.

Hating your base, trashing your fellow democrats and attacking the best candidate out there… well you all underestimated what the reaction to that injustice and tyranny would be.

You all overestimated the loyalty of the base, once it got kicked in the butt, dismissed as irrelevant, labeled as racist and ignorant, and insulted in vile and filthy ways.

You know why this was so? Because she ran a racist, shill and dishonest campaign. Had she had a competent set of folks working for her, and had run a postivie campaign, she's be the nominee right now. Many of us had enough of her campaign's nonsense and that why we moved on. Was Hillary a victim of sexism? Yes
Was/is Barack a victim of racism? Yes

Two people who did a wonderful job of overcoming two of the worst 'isms'. Someone had to win, someone had to lose. Would Obama supporters still be crying foul if Hillary had won? Would they be any less justified in doing so? I think Hillary supporters need to consider that and then get back into the fight so the US doesn't get any more right wing judicial appointments and doesn't go further down the path Bush/Cheney have taken the country on. Please, the world can't afford it.

Brenda   July 20th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Gore is no friend to the Clintons. Thanks for nothing, Al. I'm ripping up your old campaign poster I had in my yard.

Hillary's campaign poster is STILL in my yard and will be there until it rots off the sticks.

You can't convince me sexism didn't play a part in Hillary's defeat. When you have people holding signs "iron my shirt" and commentators referring to Hillary as a "b–ch" and journalists giving Obama glorified coverage and everyone just turning a blind eye to the whole thing…there was indeed sexism working against Hillary.

Elizabeth   July 20th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

In a reactionary effort to distance themselves from what they sat around and let George Bush do over the last eight years, the Democratic party, both it's leaders and a razor-thin majority of its registered voters, turned its back on a candidate who has worked tirelessly for them for many, many, years. Al Gore, despite his valiant work in other areas, is among them, but at least, with his after-the-fact kind words about Hillary Clinton, he shows evidence of a guilty conscience. I hope Jack McCain gets elected. Barack Obama seems a dangerous unknown.

Why, didn't Obama take his wife with him? After all she seems to be the one who wears the pants in that family. As far as people pandering to us Clinton supporters, there is no amount a butt-kissing that Obama or his supporters can do to make this right. Sen. Clinton is the only one who should be POTUS, even if Obama would win it will be the same old same old. Because he doesn't have a clue on what should be done about the WAR, ENERGY or anything else, therefore all THE GOOD-OLE BOYS, in THE SENATE OR THE CONGRESS, will keep on with the same old politics, because they will have a leader who doesn't know how TO LEAD. Hillary was shunned for running in the first place. I've never seen such vitrol childish comments coming out of the HALF-black candidate's supporters. This vitrol became the media's campaign to win as well. Obama is a chameleon who's been running for POTUS on little or no experience and trying to please everyone in the name of political expediency. He's had to explain and defend too much already. Just wait till after the conventions, November will be a shock to his drooling liberal fans and I can't wait. We all aren't brainwashed.

Daniel Wagle   July 20th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

I once tried to reply on this subject. There WAS sexism expressed, esp. by the media, but I think it actually might have helped Hillary in the sense that it tended to galvanize her supporters. There was racism in some parts of the electorate and this tended to galvanize Obama's supporters. Neither Bill nor Hillary were at all racist, but maybe they could have phrased things a little differently. For instance it would have been better to compare John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson on their accomplishments, rather than Martin Luther King and Johnson. Kennedy could give a good speech, but he was far less able than Johnson was in getting things through congress. Hillary did not lose by much, but I would attribute her not doing better to underestimating Obama and not having a plan post super Tuesday. Also, I think she lost the popular vote by a hair, but mainly because very few people actually voted in Puerto Rico. If twice as many people voted there, she would have won the popular vote, that is counting ALL the votes, Florida, Michigan with the uncommitted going for Obama and also the caucus states, which favored Obama. Territories SHOULD have been counted in the popular vote. For instance Puerto Rico represents the wishes of millions of Hispanics living in this country.

Mark Ramsey MD Milwaukee WI   July 20th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

1/2 of the voters in the democratic primary voted for Hillary as nominee of the party. How can Obama, or Gore, or anyone else, ignore that? There is only one logical choice for vice-president, and that is Hillary Clinton. It will be the best way to unite the democratic party, and she is most qualified to replace him if , God forbid, something happens to him. Right now alot of democrats are feeeling disaffected. I think these threats to vote for McCain will go away, but I think alot of democrats just won't vote if Hilary is not on the ticket.. Senator Obama, I am counting on you to make the right choice: Obama/Clinton '08!

California Gold   July 20th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

The advances women have made are only lasting because of the obstacles. If it was so easy the change would be minor. Hillary's campaign won in so many others ways that are greater than the nomination. She earned every vote and over came barriers through challenge, perseverance, and focus. The anger Hillary's supporters feel is valid but don't let the truth as you see it stop the momentum. Anger and ultimatums and bitter words don't keep the ball rolling. The Democrat party needs to unite and keep McCain out of the oval office. Hillary Clinton understands that. Do you think she is so angry and bitter that she will vote for McCain? NO WAY! McCain is the antithesis of everything she stands for. Come on people.

Jaime in Texas   July 20th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

Man, you'v e still got some bitter Hilary people out there. I'm both a Hilary and Barrack admirer. I don't believe that any rational , un-biased person who reviewed all of the venom from the two camps during that fiercely contested race, would conclude that there was more venom directed at Hilary than at Barrack. Certainly, none of the HRC people can say that Barrack himself made unfair or hate-filled criticism of her. Of course both camps allowed their surrogates to cross the lines of decency. You haters can carry on all you want. i understand what happened during the campaign, (it was sad) and inspite of things, I will always have great admiration for the Clintons and for Barrack.

Peter   July 20th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

I know she changed my perceptions. Before this gong show I had supported a large number of women for governmental office. I will certainly think much harder on the peripheral issues of doing so in the future. The support, by both men and women, for Clinton was and is disgracful. To be fair however, the digrace belongs mostly to women "supporters" who look past the obvious inadequacies of their candidate simply due to her gender!

Leroy   July 20th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Former Vice-President Gore is an astute statesman and spokesman and he speaks with honesty. My only wish is that it was he, who won the Presidency in 2000 and not President Bush. That is life, though, and we move on and hope that more voters feel as I do, after these 8 years of incompetence and negligence. The Republicans should go back to their constituents and listen to them, this time and act, accordingly. If they did, the occupation of Iraq would be over, the mismanaged job in New Orleans, which Homeland Security is responsible for, would be corrected and the mystery of the " tainted tomatoes ", would be solved. That would mean, of course, that their constituents were no longer voting Republican, but are now voting Democrat. Now, that would make sense, given the Republicans dismal record for the last 8 years !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Hillary set the women's movement back about 20 years with her mishandled campaign and I resent her for it.

She had the national stage, and she could have advocated for women in a way that would have had real meaning. She could have taken the sexism and turned it back on the media, showing how a strong woman can lead, do things differently.

But what did she do?

She played the good ol boy game just like the good ol boys. Lies. Testicular fortitude. Rocky. Pandering to the neocons.

The only time women's issues came to the forefront was after the fact, when the whining about sexism began. Too little, too late. And if she doesn't get it together and 'work her heart out' for the presumptive nominee, her political future is ruined as well. Pathetic.

Obama is not new — it's JFK all over again — with the same result — the "old guys" had to go clean up afterwards. Trouble is you 30/40-somethings weren't there and don't remember. So here we go again . . .

• Kennedy's "Camelot" was all glitter and no substance. JFK “inspired” a generation of Americans and raised them to a pitch of high excitement, but his promises were never followed by performance.

• With a gap between rhetoric and reality, the Kennedy years produced no significant progress for the American people and caused frustration and bitterness that came back to plague the nation in the late '60s.

• In foreign policy, Kennedy lurched unsteadily from one crisis to another — it was his ineptitude in the handling of the (failed) Bay of Pigs invasion that encouraged the Soviets to test his resolution by moving missiles to Cuba.

• Kennedy's handling of Congress was dismal and inept, and none of the major domestic proposals of his much-heralded "New Frontier" were enacted into law.

Shannon Bowling Green, KY   July 20th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

Not that anyone is pandering towards the 'disenchanted' Hillary supporters, Fran - but if anyone did it is because Obama is going to need ALL the help he can get come November. The economy is in the crapper, unemployment is up, there's an unpopular war; all on top of the failures of the current administration and Obama is currently up by 6 points. Yes, only SIX!

Ken   July 20th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Here is just another reason that Hillary Clinton should have been the nominee instead of the "Pied Piper" Obama.

If Obama wants to get into the White House he will have to put Hillary Clinton on the ticket, or I for one will end up voting for McCain. I would rather have a President that has experience and one that is more concerned with what the Americans want than what other countries want.

Come a long way? You have no clue, Mr. Gore. Only to be stopped by the DNC, but you know what that's like, don't you? Kind of like having your opponent SELECTED not ELECTED.

There is nothing that will make me vote for Obama. What a sleaze bag- now he's groveling all over Europe trying to make people like him. What an empty suit.

I'm not suckered by the "oh Roe v. Wade is at risk so you have to vote for obama" crap either. The DNC should have thought of that before they mugged Clinton and all of her 18 million voters.

As to contributing to the Hillary debt, Hillary didn't appeal to the chardonnay crowd with all that disposable income to pander to America's newest pretty boy du jour. Hope they've got enough left to pay the taxes he's going to impose…Hillary voters are regular people, NOT Obama elites. We can't all afford to pitch in. You Obama fools would have her driving around the mountains of Pennsylvania trying to squeeze money out of unemployment workers.

The hatred that some Hillary supporters spew towards anyone that didn't support Hillary must be a great burden on them. If they made comments that had insightful observations on policy, on women's rights, on any of the issues, one might be able to enter into a dialogue with them. Please remember that this is politics and both sides in the primary played whatever cards they felt they had and neither side was above the political mudslinging. That someone dare not agree with you or endorse your candidate does not make that person evil, malicious, sexist, racist, etc.

Obama= bush III   July 20th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

Obama reminds me of Bush much more than McCain does.

I did not vote for the arrogant, self-serving, cocky, swaggering self-impressed know-nothing, do-nothing Bushe- either time.

I will not vote for Obama either.

Defecting from a lifelong history of voting for the democratic nominee.

That is how good Obama was at uniting the party and the nation- and how false his message of change and hope has been.

M.S. Indiana   July 20th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

Al Gore and both Clinton's will be a part of the new world order… May not be VP or either, but there are a lot of spots to fill out, esp after Bush

hope some of those puma people start putting money into their speeches of hate..

Lisa   July 20th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

Hillary if you're out there, I want you know know that your supporters are still behind you 100%. We still have a hurdle to knock Obama out of race so you can become our next President. Obama is a nice guy and all but I hope he realizes he's not experienced enough and hand you the title. His supporters are little kids still learning their ABC's and 123's. They need to listen to their elders anyway.

Hillary don't give up, tell Bill I said hello!!

The people voted for the VERY best- Hillary R. Clinton.

The Sheople baaahed for Obama.

The DNC capitulated and installed the demogogue.

NOW WAIT AND SEE THE REPURCUSSIONS FOR THE NOMINEE, THE PARTY AND THE NATION.

Andrew   July 20th, 2008 3:05 pm ET

Texas Trail Dog - Yeah, and Bill couldn't keep his composure together in the highest office in the land. That cuts both ways. Its politics, the smart move was to distance himself from Bill as he was being perceived by key voting blocs in a negative light.

But the comments here all have something in common, from the pro-Clinton supporters. This feeling of inevitability. Gore didn't do what he was supposed to do. [Hillary] should be president. [Others] didn't do their job. In politics, the only constant is that nothing is inevitable. The hissy-fits being thrown over this, to me, represent two possible paths. One, you guys and gals are just baiting people online for your own kicks. The second is that you truly think that a return to inevitable rulership is in the best interests of the country, and you will vote, against your better interests, to preserve that idea. The only idiots here are the ones that wish to return themselves to the shackles of aristocracy and preservation of consistent familial rule.

I am amazed at the pure hatred between folks on here. I mean, if you look at Clinton's policy ideas and Obama's they are the exact same. So how does a lifelong Democrat change parties, because their person doesn't get past the primaries? Come on! Grow Up. You are acting like a spoiled Child. It has been two months. Obama is representing the democrats. Hillary Lost. For whatever reason she lost. You can not cry over spilt milk. Can you really say that you would rather have McCain and four more years of Bush and worse?? Give me a break!

And for the lady' from Texas….You my friend are a joke. You can't say that race has nothing to do with it. Give me a break. Your very comment reveals that it is all about race with you. I have lived in Texas most of my life, and I have seen your kind come and go. You probably have "black friends"…so you cant be a racist. Come on Admit it! I think Hillary inforced the stereotype of white women, when things do not go your way,cry sexism and she was treated unfair.Obama was treated just as bad or worse by her,the media, and the republican party and did not whine once.He was accused of every thing negative, eventhough none of it was true.I think that it is wrong to blame him for what Hillary clearly done to her self.

she has just set back all american women 50 years backward in politics with her divisive campaign and poor character.
she single handedly divided the democratic party and america!
yes, indeed she has changed the perception of women.

and i think she claims to have 18 million supporters,if all those her 18million supporters donated a dollar im surre a large part of her bill would be paid.
so do it already

DEMOCRATS - come on! Elect Barack. Don't expect Hillary as VP. She should be AG or Secretary of State - where her worth and value - and the distraction of Wild Bill - can be fully showcased.

Sue/PA   July 20th, 2008 2:55 pm ET

Hillary did pave a stronger path for women. And yes, sexism was apparent in the media coverage as was racism. But, that isnt what lost Hillary the nomination. Hillary and they way she ran her campaign did. Those that hold Sen Obama responsible for Hillarys loss are just selfish and self centered. Because not backing Sen Obama and voting for John McCain INSULTS everything Hillary Clinton stood for.

John McShame, Obama Is Going to Tax You & Cindy, but Not Me & 95% Americans Making < $250,000/Yr   July 20th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

Hillary lost fair and square because she mismanaged her campaign……………..saying that she lost based on sexism, is like saying she can't compete fairly in a male dominated world; and I think Hillary should be insulted by that notion considering all that she has accomplished in life as a senator and a former first lady.

racism and sexism were issues in the primary, but they were not the reasons Obama won or why Hillary lost.

Obama won because he was a better candidate; Hillary lost because she couldn't manage her campaign and she underestimated Obama and his caucus states win.

Let's not make the same mistake again, people. Twice voting for Bush were two of the biggest errors this country has witnessed. We do not need McCain continuing what the couboy mentally has done to this world.

I have become painfully aware that our party is totally disfunctional and will not be united. I am a Obama supporter, and I would have happily supported and voted for Hillary if she were named the presumpive nominee. She was not. We must move on. I feel like I am bashed over the head every day with having to make her supporters feel 'good' about supporting Obama. When you declare for your party you should stay with your party. Absolutely none of McCain's positions line up with Clintons or Obamas. Stop whining about leaving the party or voting republican or green. Go Nike and just DO IT! Or as my granny would say, BABY BYE!!!!!!!!

Media Bias   July 20th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

I have never seen someone get skewered as much as Hillary Clinton did, I am an indepedent that has voted Democrat in the last 2 presidential elections, I will never vote for Obama, in part b/c he has no firm stanceson anything and he is constantly shifting his opinions, and I am furious with his arrogant supporters and this media that was so ruthless to her, for the record, I hate cnn. You can change the coverage and make him out to be the next messiah, but you will not change my vote.

Morningstar   July 20th, 2008 2:42 pm ET

Shannon, the primaries are over, let move on. Hillary did a good job by showing the world that a woman came become a president of the USA; she did a very bad as far as her campaign strategy goes. She and her supporter have no reason whatsoever to blame Obama for that.

No Hillary… No win in NOV.

Destroying the best candidate just to advance the least qualified one CAN NOT become the future strategy of democratic party primaries.

Fixing elections will not stand. Hateful, divisive, nasty Thug tactics a la Chicago style is not a democratic concept.

This gutting of the democratic process can not become the norm.

No to Obama, no to the DNC… until the principles and ideals of the party once again return.

Tina   July 20th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Of course, she was treated unfairly by the media and her party. I'm not disenchanted, I'm dissappointed with some of Obama's supporters who believe they are the smartest people in this world and his party.

I remember when the president announced the war in Iraq. I never understood his reasons and didn't support him. Many of us thought the same. But yet, we couldn't do anything about it. The same thing happened to Senator Obama. He couldn't do anything about it.

Let's be honest and realistic.

Thanks.

Slavery, Apartheid, Genocide.   July 20th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

Come on folks…this is a huge deal. Lets call it for what it is but I rather be a victim of sexism than racism. Someone gets hate mails, death threats, discriminated and criticized just because their skin color; the are not whining nor complaining even when every failed to recognize how "EASY" it's been for them. And the other was deprived of equal pay, recognition and respect as a result of their gender . I think we have to be reasonable here…Its very unfortunate racism and sexism and other kinds of discrimination exists in this day and age. I believe all forms of discrimination is unjust and we all should be against it. BUT RACIAL DISCRIMINATION HAS A MUCH MORE SIGNIFICANT-NEGATIVE AND SEVERE IMPACT IN THE LIVES OF THOSE INVOLVED. A comparison of racism any other form of discrimination does not even make any sense.

I was just thinking.

Ditto to Texas Trail Dog and Rachel (why are there not more positive articles about Hillary and what she is accomplishing? Millions of people voted for her.) Like many, I am also angry at Richardson and Edwards, etc. They gleefully blocked Hillary. Gore and Pelosi did nothing to defend or encourage her. Gore, at least, kept silent until she dropped out. I cannot believe how politicians, media personnel, etc. were so opposed to her running and so supportive of Obama. He has not accomplished anything politically. People have lost their minds. Take a look back through history at similar candidates. I don't dare give examples because of the resulting firestorm.

Allan   July 20th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Look, it is what it is. Hillary should do a great job as a Senator for New York. What is the big deal ?

In my view, Jesse Jackson has seriously compromised himself as a Reverand / Activist with his off color remarks. I really think he should retire now at 76 years old.

Wolf   July 20th, 2008 2:26 pm ET

Yes, and Gore, Brazile, Dean, Pelosi, Reid, Kerry, Kennedy and Obama are all guilty of the same old 'good old boys' network who screwed Clinton. Clinton won the popular vote. Obama lost 11 of the last 15 primaries. The Super Delegates should be ashamed of themselves. The Dems will loose in November because the one thing the DNC did not count on is that people in the United States are fair minded and do not like seeing anyone get messed over like Clinton did. Honesty, fairness, honor - all marks of a good American and all marks that Gore, Brazile, Dean Pelosi, Reid, Kerry, Kennedy, Obama and the DNC do not have.

PUMA! Vote for America…Vote for Honor…Vote for McCain!

Senator Clinton accomplished many positive things in the Primary. She also, unfortunately did alot of harm to the Democratic Party. pumA's are the number one example. They called us cultists and kool-aide drinkers all thru the Primary season- and look how it's turned out! Cultists indeed.

Nancy for Hillary 08   July 20th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

Democracy itself over loyalty to democratic party   July 20th, 2008 2:23 pm ET

Out of two POOR excuses for candidates from the two main parties… I will vote for the one that DID NOT STEAL THE NOMINATION from HRC.

After, all HRC was the winner and remains the ONLY viable candidate capable of leading.

The one who played dirty to eliminate her… is the one I will NEVER vote for.

Lyn   July 20th, 2008 2:21 pm ET

I am not a Hillary fan, but I do think she taught the younger generation of women politicians some real lessons. 1) Big girls shouldn't cry on camera, and then play the victim when asked tough questions. 2) Muzzle your husband, especially if his ego is as large as Bill's. He will want you to lose, so he can remain top dog. 3) Do the math — don't let your campaign over-focus on the general election states causing you to run from behind.

Party ideals were destroyed.   July 20th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

And she shoed us how racist and bigoted and sexist democrats really are.

And how willing they are to trash, bash and destroy one of their own.

Obama fast tracked himself to glory- not on merit or accomplishment- but by divisiveness and by stoking the fires of reverse-racism and sexism.

He intentionally played dirty and risked the destruction of the democratic party, for PERSONAL gain, self-serving glorification and to prematurely grab the white house.

WE will never forget or forgive the hypocrisy of the DNC and the so-called liberal democrats for the vitriol they showed US, and our candidate.

Democracy over democratic party   July 20th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

And it changed our perception of our democratic party.

Who'd have thought it would be so vile, filthy, ugly and brutal to one of its own?

Who have expected the hate and the gender bias and the nasty insults hurled against a great leader and those who love her/

Who could guess the uniter, Obama would go down in history as the cheater who destroyed his own party in his mad grab for power.

WHO'D have thought it.

Joel, Honolulu   July 20th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

If the MSM was "unfair" to Hillary, maybe its because she is a Clinton and not because she is a woman? Maybe she was labeled as shrill because she was, in fact, shrill? You cannot tell me that her forced laughter was not "high-pitched and piercing in sound quality" as the word is defined. FYI - I'm a Clinton fan and would have voted for her had she been the Democratic nominee.

Secondly, how can anyone be undecided at this point? All of the facts are out there. There will be the occasional position shift, a la McCain and offshore drilling, but everything has already been said. We know where these guys stand. If you don't, turn off Fox News or CNN and visit the candidates web pages.

Hillary supporter backing McCain   July 20th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

Gore is a hypocrite - plain and simple. I saw a little clip of his speech telling America that we need to invest billions of dollars over the next 10 years to become energy independent. Where were you when you VP. You made millions of this climate change initiative and yet your home and your lifestyle was less than eco friendly. You and the rest of the Dems did nothing to show Hillary more respect. Go back Obama, his ego is bigger than yours and Congress. I would rather have 4 years of McCain than 4 or 8 years of empty suit.

Hypocrits for Obama   July 20th, 2008 2:13 pm ET

3 candidates- Hill shone… the other two are no option at all.

So count on us picking the lesser evil, McCain.

He did not sabotage and swiftboat Hillary- her OWN party carved her up and ate her alive.

Hate and vulgarity and filth and dirty politics will not speak to true lifelong democrats who stand on the priciples of fair campaigns and justice and equality.

Obama-Junkie, IL   July 20th, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Answer…NO!

James-Miami, Ok.   July 20th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

You don`t think Obama would pick Hillary since the DNC wouldn`t approve do you? Since Hillary got more popular, and he needs those votes to get elected-and the DNC knows that, do they want to win in November?

Universal Health or nothing   July 20th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

The hope of Universal health care died when you killed Hillary as our nominee- against the will of the democratic base.

I will personally vote AGAINST any lesser plan (like Obama's)- until the true Universal plan advanced by Hillary can be enacted.

No point getting a BAD plan rooted. Obama's plan is neither Universal nor equitable.

IF adults will voluntarily enroll into affordable health care- then WHY mandate if for children? Certainly parents would be responsible. If not, why pretend other so-called-responsible- adults will?

Coverage for ALL Americans or none.

Price to pay for sabotaging the better candidate and forcing the least worthy candidate as our party nominee.

With McCain, there shouldn't even be a question. He may be old, but he's always been immature. Truly a hair-trigger, 'shoot from the hip' personality, and stiff as a board. Obama, on the other hand, mature beyond his years and bigger than his shrillest supporters, is wise to be reaching out.

A house divided   July 20th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

Gore had the decency to stay out of it and remain neutral. Unlike Oprah, Caroline, Richardson and many others, he allowed voters to decide. He did not try to force their vote.

Other high ranking democrats jumped on the celebrity bandwagon, media myth of Obama and decided that it was in their BEST interest to bash Hillary.

Guess what? That backfired.

Hillary supporters outnumber Obama supporters… and even if 25% will now NOT vote along party lines- that makes a difference.

The more you bash Hillary, the more it damages Obama.

It is bad enough the party sacrificed her- the best candidate of a lifetime- just to install the black man.

That appeased the African Americans (12% of America) and the new democrats who never before CARED enough to vote, and the left wing.

But that swiftboating of a fellow democrat and the vitriol against all her millions of supporters did much damage: it divided the party, caused millions of lifelong democrats to defect from the party, has alienated older women who always vote democratic and left a STAIN ON OUR DEMOCRACY AND THE ELECTORAL PROCESS.

God willing, justice will be served come Nov.

Anna   July 20th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

I have another question. An honest open one.
What was sooo wrong about former Prez Clinton's comparison of Jackson's victory in SC to Obama's recent victory in the same state?

An insinuation about SC's demographics in its Democratic constituency?
Ok, maybe it was.
But what is wrong with that? Why is it something to be sensitive about or offended by?
I dont really understand why it is wrong to vote for someone because of their race; especially in our racially-polarized society.
I mean, if abortion proponents/opponents can vote on one issue because a candidate meets a need that is critical to them, I dont understand why any African-American needs to explain or feel sensitive to a suggestion that they may have voted for a candidate simply because of his/her race.
I would think it a valid argument that a black candidate may have a better understanding to the needs of black Americans than a white candidate, and it makes sense to me that that would be a voting consideration whether or not he/she was the first viable candidate in history.
And I dont think any white person understands that better than the Clintons.

So, I have to admit the charges that the Clintons ran a Racist campaign is far more disturbing to me than the petty sexist and totally moronic comments thrown at Hillary.
Come on, we are talking about a President who moved his office from the White House to Harlem long before Obama announced his intentions to run for President.

I would like to know…thx.

The cost to our Nation and to democracy for this treachery and for the unfairness of a primary where the Least qualified was installed over the BETTER qualified opponent will be felt for decades.

what are you thinking?   July 20th, 2008 1:35 pm ET

it seems that it is the very people who Mrs. Clinton fought for are the ones who will and are undermining all of her hard work and efforts. The PUMA PAC, the hurt supports, the women who are angry at the outcome of the election are killing Mrs. Clinton's chance to ever run again….and that is so sad. this was the first time in my life i have been exited about the primaries, it was goodvgood it was a hard choice but Mr. Obama won. not one Clinton supporter can say Obama, himself was ever rude or disrespectful to Mrs. Clinton. as i recall Obama supporters would cheer Mrs. Clinton, it was her supporters that showed great dis respect at Mrs. Clinton's speech when they booed Obama….such disrespect. now they what to hold America hostage? the pity of this is, if McCain wins in November we may not have a 2012. Mrs. Clinton has done great things in the race and for the country, shame her supporters are killing what she has done.

Its so sad to see how americans always try to blame others for their stupidity. is obama the reason hillary lost - NO. she lost because she was meant to lose. of course there was racism in the media too.
hillary supporters should stop blaming obama for her loss. it goes to solidify the fact the she thinks its her RIGHT to be the nominee.
one word to hillary supporters: IF YOU DONT LIKE OBAMA, THEN DONT VOTE FOR HIM. YOU'LL HAVE TO LIVE WITH THE CONSEQUENCES. I HOPE MCCAIN SENDS YOU AND YOUR KIDS OFF TO IRAN? MIDEAST WHEN THE PLANNED MILITARY DRAFT IS REINTRODUCED IN 3YRS (IF MCBUSH WINS).
Just my thought guys (i am white, but not american).

Thank you Al Gore for taking center stage with this observation and with your 10 year 100% carbon free electricity challenge to the candidates.

After spending most of the last 2 weeks with CNN's love affair with Obama, (3 days of "Aren't his children so cute" while in Hollywood., 2 days of "How could Jesse Jackson have said that" and then 2 days of Jackson apologizing, a day of "Can you believe the New Yorker could have printed that" and 2-3 days of how the New Yorker cover will really help Barack - Yep we're on a first name basis here - and now having to watch the anointed one shooting a basketball in Afghanistan) listening to a well versed, experienced and genuinely concerned American is refreshing.

Of course now we will no doubt have to endure a week or more of drooling crowds mindlessly chanting "Yes We Can" in a bunch of foreign languages as Obama does his "World Tour"… Oh well

Hey CNN stick to the issues and balance your coverage a lot of people who watch/read you don't support Obama, and some even think he is a disingenuous neophyte. Nope, all those folks don't watch Fox News, at least not yet…

I'm sure there was prejudice against Hillary, just as there was against Obama. Some people voted for them because the were either female or black and some didn't because they were female or black. I do believe that Hillary was greatly hurt as a woman by having her husband doing alot of her campaigning when she was trying to represent herself as representing women. In the end, if you truly look at their campaigns, Obama ran a much better campaign that worked within its budget and showed greater leadership. They both made some mistakes along the way and some of their supporters got down right nasty but I can't really see that Hillary was the victim and as Bill said, if you can't take the heat, you shouldn't be out their trying to be president. I think Hillary and her "kitchen sink" approach hurt her and I'm a 55 year old white female. Obama simply was a better leader and hopefully in the near future we can elect a female for president, i just hope it is someone other than Hillary.

No more about Mrs. Clinton and the Presidency please. This blog needs to turn the page. That book is closed for 2008.

If she is to be Vice President, Mr. Obama will decide. Those that seek to DEMAND it from him or EXTORT it from him only make it LESS LIKELY to happen.

Senator Obama has shown he is not soft, can't be punked, isn't weak on foreign affairs, nor is he naive and reckless as McCain has claimed. He is the Democratic Party nominee … accept it and get behind him. He will be the best thing for American in this changing world and will be head-and-shoulders above McCain, no pun intended.

From the headline I first thought "the article was about Bill", happy to find that not to be the case…

He's special   July 20th, 2008 1:29 pm ET

The election of Obama could well mean the end of the world as we know it.

Shannon I agree there was sexist comments made about Sen Clinton, but can you give me 1 example of Sen Obama, or anyone in his camp making a sexist comment? Just 1??? The sexist comments were made by the media, (people who are only interested in ratings) or the nut cases on these post. (Most of them are Republicans trying to divide the Dem. Party) It's not fair to blame Obama for what others are saying, even his supporters who acted like children on these post.

Also there was alot of racism in the primary. Where was Sen Clinton? I didn't see her standing up for him, nor did I see the dem party standing up for him. I did see Bill compare him to Jackson. Something that alot of us African Americans didn't like.

This is politics. You don't defend your competition.

I believe w/ the issues that we have at hand, Hillary would have been the best candidate in the issues that we are facing at this time. I supported Hillary from the beginning and very disappointed that she did not become the nominee for the democratic party but I still think she would have been the best candidate. If only we could redo the primary. Go Hilary!!!

kelly WI   July 20th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Obama says one thing one day, the opposite the next, on every issue.
Like the Chicgo paper said, he is a Chicago politician. Period.
I am now more interested in knowing if the media is going to be filming the 20,000+ protesters camping out in City Park during the DNC convention. Are they going to be filming the 10,000 homeless being shipped out or sent to the movies? Are they going to film the 19 groups of protesters, in their designated only areas? Are they going to film the ACLU lawyers all running around with their cameras trying to catch something to sue the city for? Will they be showing the closing of the states major Interstate and other streets being closed so Obama can get to Invesco to give his crown?
I doubt it. Will have to catch it on You tube.
Spend some time reading the Rocky Mtn. News and Denver Post instead of all this name calling and bashing of CNN.
We all know the left stream media has stiffies for Obama. No secret there.

No wonder the "good" people of Denver are getting out of Dodge for the week.

Sammy   July 20th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Blaming the media is an old story. Maybe I missed it but I have yet to hear Clinton say that maybe her campaign was flawed. It damaged her nomination chances more than anything else. As soon as she admits this I will listen to the sexism argument.

AL GORE ENDORSED THE RIGHT CANDIDATE !!

Texas Trail Dog you hate Obama ! Although you say that is not because of colour, the way you present it suggests you are hiding your racism. Stand up and say what you want to say straight away!

Ann Wright   July 20th, 2008 1:26 pm ET

Something is wrong with this picture! No matter how or what Obama do is criticized. No one told John McCain what or not to do. Could John McCain be jealous of Obama, because Obama played Basketball and he can't? The news media is forever putting this Obama, no matter what. Is this because he is Black? He will get the Job done and I trust him.

Leave Obama alone and let him do it his way. Obama is not stupid; he knows how to get what he wants… Obama is simply mixing with the people oversees and making the foreigners feel comfortable with him, could make a difference. They are looking for something or someone new.

The media is trying to make Obama choose Sen. Clinton for his Vice President. That is no one business but his, and he has the right to run his Campaign like everyone else. It is as you can be the Presidential Nominee, but you have to do it, our way. Have you ever changed your mind about anything. There is no way, you can do and say what you think is best. Things change each and every day, so there is no limit.

Nancy for Hillary 08   July 20th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

Gore you got it right Hillary was amazing in the campaign for Democrats included the best candidate for the country of all, but the media and Obama's campaign did everything in their power to made impossible for her to be the nominee. They used the money power to win, but they are running such a clown campaign twisting everything in their favor. I am sick and tired in how the Obama's campaign trying to win. He knows, the people know and I know the best was, is and will be Hillary Clinton. (she is very knowledgeable in the issues, smart, kind, dedicated, strong and sharp in her goals. Al Gore women are not forgetful and Obama is going to pay for that….he and his campaign offended women to many times and now he want to pretend that women just forgot/ only in his dreams and hope for change to the worst. Unpatriotic guy/ offending people in SF because they did not supported him and a couple times he got out of control six shooter…etc. Hillary supporters voted for her because her value not because they are dem. So, now support only for Hillary or Mccain 08. MONEY DON'T BUY EVERYTHING OBAMA. I HOPE YOU KNOW THAT.

Jimenez   July 20th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

Thats all good and said. However what Gore said about Clinton will not change anyone's mind that wasn't and isn't supporting Obama. It wasn't that she was a woman - it was that she was/is the best candidate. The democrats really messed this up. McCain will take it come November and there is no one else to blame then the DNC and the people who made it happen.

Robert Dennison   July 20th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

I wish we had a media outlet that reports the real issues that are affecting all americans regardless of the COLOR OF A PERSON'S
SKIN. This article is in so poor taste. "A black man running against a women". We all are feeling the "squeeze" as a result of high gas, food, and medical coverages. Please do better!

mike obama   July 20th, 2008 1:23 pm ET

This Presidential Election is between All American Baby and Kenyan Anchor Baby.
Gore is just trying to appease the base by talking highly about Hillary. The fact is the democrats rejected Woman and accepted inexperienced black man as their presidential nominee. Democrats were not ready for Woman to be their President, but they are ready to accept inexperienced black man to be their President. If they did not chose the black man they were afraid to loose their voting block. Go Figure!!!. Truth Hurts.

red33,cedar rapids, ia   July 20th, 2008 1:22 pm ET

Al Gore just cannot stay out of the 'limelight'; does he still have dreams of running for president in the future? Heaven forbid!
