Rick   July 21st, 2008 9:04 pm ET

I see very little difference between Democrats or Republicans (a.k.a. politicians). My voting decision(s) are based on which candidate can do the least harm to this country (locally, statewide, and nationally) and my wallet. Words like character, conviction, honesty, integrity, honor, hard work, ethical behavior, accountability etc. no longer have any meaning (or value) in this country. I'd love to be proven wrong.

Gratitude for Yesterday,
Responsibility for Today,
Possibilities for Tomorrow.

May I explain my ten (actually nine) words?

Gratitude for Yesterday: I am humbled and thankful to have had the incredible fortune to have been born in America during the 20th century. My fellow citizens and I enjoy "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness" in a manner unequaled throughout history; sadly, these "inalienable Rights" have never been tasted by many who have lived in other times or places. Free and honest voting by an informed electorate is the "root cause" of the American way of life. Each vote I cast is also a “thank you” to the many men and women who died to give me this Right.

Responsibility for Today: Our country has its problems, without question. Snake oil salesmen will always be out there, selling false promises and easy answers. Lincoln said "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time." In other words, the quality of our laws and politicians is safeguarded by the vigilance of the entire electorate, which includes me.

Possibilities for Tomorrow: Like many other parents, I dream of a better world for my daughter. I often wonder what her life will look like: What kind of a job will she have? Will she be able to afford a house? Will she have children? Will she be able to have enough quality time with them? I used to envy my parents for having been born in a unique golden age – now I feel my own life has been relatively golden too, and worry that my daughter and her generation will be left with crumbs. I believe in “pay as you go” taxation instead of leaving the bills for small children to pay.

Politicians, with a few exceptions, do not listen to the public but to their special interest, especially the Unions and enviromental extremist. Look at Obama who voted Liberal but is trying to convince people he is really a centrist. Anything to get elected. McCain is a proven "Maverick",

Why Vote/What Politics Means

"Voting/Politics – taking responsibility who we are as a nation"

Sandra   July 18th, 2008 11:44 am ET

It means doing what is right for ALL citizens, not just a FEW. It means not hanging our fellow Americans out to dry as the "cost of doing business." It means not killing others' children, so we can continue to ride around (alone) in SUVs. It means protecting life over profit.

Exercising my constitutional right (and duty) to vote - for what I believe in my heart and head is best for my beloved country - NOT my party. That means voting for the most genuine and experienced candidate - not the blackest, whitest, oldest, or youngest. Politics means saying and doing anything to get elected. It means saying "electing McCain is four more years of Bush." It means saying "Obama is more left than the independent Democratic socialist Senator from Vermont."

It means the real issues of our country are not debated – just marketing images, rhetoric and personal attacks – it means business as usual.
