Former Pres. Bush spoke about Obama Monday.
Former Pres. Bush spoke about Obama Monday.

(CNN) - There’s been plenty of second-guessing from Republican critics about Barack Obama's large-scale public events and speeches scheduled for his visit to Europe this week - but former President George H.W. Bush isn't one of them.

Asked today whether, as a former head of state who has a sensitivity about protocol, he has any thoughts about the appropriateness of Obama's planned events, the former President replied, "A little jealous, is all."

The former president, who says he's just returned from a visit to Germany's Brandenburg gate, added that Obama will "figure it out."

For more on the stagecraft of Obama's world tour, tune into Campbell Brown: Election Center tonight at 8 pm ET.

Ex-Republican for Obama   July 21st, 2008 6:46 pm ET

His statement was actually quite respectful. I can not call names back at him for being cordial, something neither his son nor McCain is capable of. It appears his colleagues (Republicans) could take a bit of his wisdom in his approach to answering a question rather then bashing and whining in rhetoric.

Praetorian, Ft. Myers   July 21st, 2008 6:46 pm ET

any politician would be jealous of obama's fame...he's got a great presence, he's a rock star....

too bad he's still a two faced back stabbing politician....

America for Obama   July 21st, 2008 6:40 pm ET

It's nice to see that Bush Sr., being the intellectual man that he is, is willing to acknowledge when someone else is good at something. He's never been able to ackowledge that about his own son George ,so why not let him bask in Obama's abilitie's? George Bush Sr. knows well that Obama can fix the presidency which has son has tarnished.

OBAMA 2008!!!

George H.W. Bush is what a Republican used to be before the moral majority took the party over. 41 is thoughtful, fair, reserved and humble. While I totally disagree with his politics at least he's a gentleman. How he produced 43 is beyond comprehension.

tedious898   July 21st, 2008 6:37 pm ET

Can we dispense with the ".....this guy has done nothing" rhetoric? Personally I wish Geo. W. had done a whole lot less ...i.e. Never showed up for work.

This whole country would be better off.

Just goes to show that former President Bush recgonizes that Obama is doing a good job. He is giving him credit that he is smart enough to figure it out. To me, it sounds like praise without coming right out and saying it. We all know he can't do that !

2) Did I mention he used to organize kickball games on the playgrounds of Chicago?

3) ?

...regarding George H.W. Bush, it doesn't surprise me he understands the capabilities of Obama. IF G.W. Bush had half the capabilities of his dad (or of obama for that matter0 the country wouldn't be in the current mess.

If you look at Brent Scowcroft and Bush Sr's policies, you'll see that Obama has learned a lot from them. Too bad our current president and John McCain are not also good students.

For a trip that is supposed to be a "listening" session for Obama, there are many, many photo ops with heads of state. His poor Senate traveling companions are being totally left out of the spotlight. More and more I am thinking Obamania is Egomania on the part of the candidate.
And all of this is supposed to make Obama more presidential and "experienced" on the foreign policy front. I shudder every time I think of the total lack of leadership experience that Obama really has . . .

It is hilarious how the Obama supporters run around screaming YES WE CAN! You got that right..YES YOU CAN LOSE ELECTIONS! You will get crushed in November and then whine for the next four years. I keep trying to figure out why some people are in here calling Obama an idiot. Last time I checked he was a very well educated....articulate and intelligent man. That has nothing to do with being a presidential candidate. Calling somebody "stupid" or an "idiot" considering that type of educational background is a little much don't you think? Oh by the way...I haven't decided which way to vote yet. Waiting on some town halls and/or debates to actually happen along with some VP choices. So this is coming from somebody who is not an "Obamabot" or and "Obama Maniac". Just looking for some people to show some common sense in the the responses they post. Something with a little more depth than "he's and idiot or airhead".

I don't see how you are all taking that as him acknowledging Obama is fit to be president? You're a little overboard with the "I bet he's voting Obama" comments.

Had the article said "How do you feel about Obama's abilities" and Bush responded that he was jealous, that'd be a different matter...but I think that's how you all are reading it.

Steve   July 21st, 2008 5:22 pm ET

HERE ARE JUST SOME OF THE REASONS JOHN McCAIN IS UNQUALIFIED TO BE PRESIDENT:

1. JOHN McCAIN VOTED "FOR" THE IRAQ WAR, WHICH HAS BEEN ONE OF THE BIGGEST FOREIGN POLICY MISTAKES THE USA HAS EVER MADE.

2. JOHN McCAIN FAILED TO RECOGNIZE THAT IT WAS THE WAR IN AFGHNAISTAN THAT WE SHOULD HAVE ALWAYS BEEN FOCUSED ON SINCE IT WAS the Taliban, and AlQueda IN AFGHANISTAN, WHO WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATH OF 3000 PEOPLE ON 9/11.

3. FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS JOHN McCAIN HAS THOUGHT THAT THINGS WERE GOING GREAT IN AFGHANISTAN, EVEN WHEN FACTS SHOWED THAT Al QUEDA, AND THE TALIBAN WERE GETTING STRONGER.

4. JOHN McCAIN DOES NOT KNOW THAT CZECHOSLAVAKIA IS NO LONGER A COUNTRY, AND HAS NOT BEEN A COUNTRY FOR 10 YEARS.

5. JOHN McCAIN THINKS THAT THE COUNTRY WHICH BORDERS PAKISTAN IS IRAQ, it is not! THE COUNTRY WHICH BORDERS PAKISTAN IS ACTUALLY AFGHANISTAN!

6. JOHN MCCAIN WANTS TO BE A PRESIDENT IN THE 21ST CENTURY, BUT HE CANNOT USE A COMPUTER, AND HE CANNOT USE THE INTERNET.
HOW WILL McCAIN BE ABLE TO COMPREHEND, AND DEAL WITH ISSUES OF THE CYBERSPACE THREATS POSED BY COUNTRIES SUCH AS CHINA, AND OTHERS, COUNTRIES WHICH HACK INTO GOVERNMENT DATABASES ON A DAILY BASIS.

7.. JOHN McCAIN HAS ALREADY ADMITTED THAT HE KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT THE ECONOMY.

8. JOHN McCAIN CALLS HIMSELF "MR. FREE TRADE", JOHN McCAIN HAS SAID HE IS "THE BIGGEST FREE TRADER YOU WILL EVER SEE", EVEN THOUGH IT IS FREE TRADE, AND OUTSOURCING WHICH HAS RESULTED IN MILLIONS OF AMERICANS LOSING THEIR JOBS TO COUNTRIES LIKE MEXICO, CHINA, INDIA, AND OTHERS.

9. AND WORST, AT A TIME WHEN WE ARE TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT NATIONS DO NOT GET THEIR HANDS ON NUCLEAR WEAPONS, JOHN McCAIN SAYS THAT AS PRESIDENT HE WILL KICK RUSSIA OUT OF THE G8, AND ACTIVELY ISOLATE CHINA AS WELL.
(SO IN ESSENCE JOHN McCAIN WANTS TO START A NEW COLD WAR WITH RUSSIA, AND CHINA, TWO OF THE RICHEST COUNTRIES ON THE PLANET, BOTH OF WHICH HAVE NUCLEAR WEAPONS!!)

JOHN MCCAIN IS A DISASTER WAITING TO HAPPEN!! JOHN McCAIN IS NOT QUALIFIED TO BE PRESIDENT OF THIS COUNTRY!!!

I dont know what he said that was so wrong. He's a little jealous of the greater attention Obama gets than he probably got during his own visit to Europe as president. He didnt say that he thinks Obama doesnt deserve it. Maybe he does maybe he doesnt. George H.W. is very good about keeping such opinions to himself.

I'm sure Clinton is a little jealous of the greater attention Obama got during their fight (media sexism charge aside).

I love reading these comments. Especially from Obama supporters. They are the most ridiculous people ever to have lived. They support a man that has done absolutely nothing in his life. Even as a community organizer the man did nothing. They support a man that spent 20 years in a church that rages hate about the United States. But then the poll numbers reacted and the pastor and the church had to be kicked to the curb. Does that mean his white grandmother has also been kicked to the curb?

All these comments are driving the Obama nuts mad. So log on to you tube and listen to one of those stirring speeches. Hurry along now.

I think he's jealous that a person so naive to such a leadership position can have such a following with just saying words like "hope"and "change". That a first term Senator can have such a following when he says that he'll only tax the "rich". If you really believe your taxes won't go up, then you too are naive.

Jealous of what? Obama's water-squirting lapel flower or his over-sized clown shoes?

Nikki   July 21st, 2008 4:57 pm ET

They are all JEALOUS!

Rather than critiquing his policies (that's right, Obama has actual policies), his opposition makes personal attacks. Even those that claim Obama is an 'empty suit', 'wet behind the ears', or 'hasn't accomplished anything' fail to acknowledge the specifics of his policies in which they disagree. Obama opponents are digesting- in the words of Hillary Clinton- "empty speeches." Let's see who falls next in line after my post with tired rhetoric and personal attacks.

Chris   July 21st, 2008 4:57 pm ET

I'm for Obama, but I never had any big issues with George Sr. He was light-years beyond dubya in every way. Ironic that the main motivation factor for dubya wanting the presidency was the old "son trying to outdo the father" syndrome. All he managed to accomplish was to secure a solid hold on last place in the list of greatest presidents. So in that sense he way outdid daddy who is at least 20-25 spots ahead of him

It's President Bush, not "Mr. Ex Prez". It's foresight, not "forsight".

He was not re-elected. I heard his son boasted to him he was re-elected! There have been some competition between the 41st and 43rd, the father and son. Actually that hurt the 43rd. If the son asked more advice from the daddy, he might be more successful on foreign affairs.

Why is the media hyping this whole thing? They staged the frenzy and now trying to get people's opinion on it. Isn't that ironic? The media has been focusing so much on Obama that they are not reporting all the misteps that McCain. has been making. Whey they do it's just for 24hrs while any mistep by Obama stays for weeks in the media. Example is when Mr. Gramm called Americans "whiners", it was same week Mr. Jackon used the "n" word on Obama. Mr. Gramms statement stayed in the media for a little over 36 hrs while Mr. Jackon's remark stayed in the media for more than a week. How fair is that in comparison?

How many other "training wheels" does Obama need to cover all the issues facing America? We heard he has 300 foreign policy advisers; generally no two of anybody can agree on anything. Why the Obama flip flops? Thankfully, the Olympics are nearly here and we can focus on what is important.

James   July 21st, 2008 4:23 pm ET

I think those five words are quite eloquent. I believe they express the entirety if not the depth of many of the reactions and actions on the right. Jealousy is why they don't understand what the big deal is about some speeches. They wish they could be that eloquent. Jealousy is why they don't understand why he draws such big crowds. They wish they could motivate others to come out such public support of them and their ideas. Jealousy is why they term him the black messiah. They clearly don't wish they could be black. But they do wish that people would put the same type of trust and significance in their character and intelligence.

The list could go on. But I think former President Bush put it best.

A little jealous, is all.

A Woman In California For Obama   July 21st, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Marie in California   July 21st, 2008 4:22 pm ET

I am reaching here, but was that meant to be a joke? If so, that was kind of funny! Thank you Mr. Ex Prez. Also your son proves daily why abortion is and should be legal. If only you had the forsight.

Billy   July 21st, 2008 4:19 pm ET

I am not a republican (nor democrat) but I do respect a lot of what George H. W. Bush did during his presidency.

As far as the "little jealous" comment. Refreshing honesty which I am sure is shared by most republican politicians and most educated republicans in our country.

As someone supporting Obama, I'm not so much jealous as I am extremely proud.

Vig   July 21st, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Bush is really myopic – would Obama be so seemingly popular if the country hadn't been dragged through the mud for the last 8 years? Bush created the Obama fantasy and now he's jealous?

cherrystrawberry   July 21st, 2008 4:16 pm ET

awwwwwwwww at least he is honest...unlike Jesse" Rhyme time " Jackson and McOld as Dirt.

Democrat for Life   July 21st, 2008 4:15 pm ET

Jealous of what? An airhead that the media's in the tank with.

Janet Jacme   July 21st, 2008 4:10 pm ET

Would seem that Daddy Bush can largely acknowledge the intellect and sound judgement of Senator Obama.

Lana   July 21st, 2008 4:09 pm ET

He's jealous because Obama will be the President, Bush could never be.

Abby   July 21st, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Oh dear… Look for George H W Bush to take back this statement ala Malaki after receiving the Rove phone call .lol
