Vanity Fair is out with their own takeoff of the New Yorker cover
Vanity Fair is out with their own takeoff of the New Yorker cover

(CNN) – John McCain’s campaign complained Tuesday morning that the press wasn’t treating the presumptive Republican nominee like they had covered Democrat Barack Obama. Tuesday afternoon, they got an unexpected jolt of equal treatment: their own parody magazine cover, modeled on the controversial illustration that graced last week’s New Yorker.

Earlier: New Yorker editor defends cover

In the picture, which debuted on Vanity Fair’s Web site Tuesday afternoon, John McCain and wife Cindy are shown in the Oval Office giving each other daps, the fist-jab greeting that Barack and Michelle Obama traded on the cover of the New Yorker.

Other elements have been tweaked so the illustration – like the New Yorker cover – reflect stories and stereotypes the candidate and his wife would most like to leave behind. Cindy McCain isn’t clutching a machine gun – she’s cradling vials of pills. There’s no Muslim garb in sight, but the Arizona senator is leaning on a walker. The American flag isn’t burning in the fireplace; instead, the Constitution smolders.

In place of the portrait of Osama bin Laden in the original art, the liberal magazine has opted for a likeness of President Bush.

Watch: Obama responds to New Yorker cover

“We had our own presidential campaign cover in the works, which explored a different facet of the Politics of Fear, but we shelved it when The New Yorker’s became the ‘It Girl’ of the blogosphere,” wrote the editors, in a tongue-in-cheek statement posted on the magazine’s Web site. “Now, however, in a selfless act of solidarity with our downstairs neighbors here at the Condé Nast building, we’d like to share it with you. Confidentially, of course.”

But don’t go looking for the cover on a newsstand near you: it will remain a virtual production, posted on the Web site alone.

I disapproved of the New Yorker's image of Obama, and I disapprove of this too. The childishness by proxy through these two campaigns is overwhelming. I'm voting for Baldwin instead.

BRAVO!!!
Whoever put this cover together, give them a raise!
The best part is it arrives just when McLame is literally whining and begging for more media coverage. Nicely done!

no McCain!   July 22nd, 2008 7:35 pm ET

I like it! It's true!

Quit complaining McCain, Obama got a controversial picture and he calmly said, "I've seen worse."

Peachy Keen   July 22nd, 2008 7:35 pm ET

Frankly, I think they should have added Carol McCain, holding her crutches, laying between Cindy and John, each kicking her while she's down.

Debby   July 22nd, 2008 7:34 pm ET

This is lame its just a copycat and just belittles Vanity Fair.

I HATE MACCAIN, BUSH WAR. VOTE FOR OBAMA   July 22nd, 2008 7:33 pm ET

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh SO FUNNY I WILL BUY THIS MAGAZINE MILLES TIMES AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA THIS IS TRUE IN THE COVER

Monica for Obama in Indiana   July 22nd, 2008 7:33 pm ET

Vanity Fair, this is a disgrace, it is not satire! This is mockery, that you should have kept! What you printed was true, what the new yorker printed was not true. I can see you are like the mccain campaign, you think we all are in a "mental recession".

The satire would have been mccain leaving his first wife and children for cindy. cindy doing drugs. bad rape jokes about women, our troops dying in Iraq for the next 100 years and oil wells pumping up all over the country. Americans homeless and dying of starvation and hurricanes like Katrina.
Shame on you, I know you are not going to miss it, but I am cancelling my subscription tomorrow.

California Gold   July 22nd, 2008 7:31 pm ET

The problem I have is with this appearing as the cover. I didn't like the cover with Senator and Mrs. Obama and I don't like this cover with Senator and Mrs. McCain. Parodies and political swipes are ok, but not gracing the cover of a magazine. Inside a magazine with an accompanying article is one thing, but I find it irresponsible to send false messages when the satire is on a cover for non-readers (at least 17% of the population is illiterate) to see.

wow   July 22nd, 2008 7:31 pm ET

hey, where is the ex-spouse who he left behind when he found his meal ticket?

KERAM   July 22nd, 2008 7:31 pm ET

THIS DOES NOT COMPARE TO WHAT THEY DID TO OBAMA...THEY DRESSED HIM AS BIN LADEN AND WIFE AS TERRORISTS! SOMETHING THAT THIS NATION IS NEUROTIC ABOUT...THIS PICTURE IS A CARICATURE OF THE MCCAINS EXCEPT FOR THE WALKER!!!!!! NEVER A COMPARABLE...MICHELLE DOES NOT WEAR HER HAIR LIKE PORTRAYED AND NEITHER DOES OBAMA!!!!!!!

chris in va.   July 22nd, 2008 7:31 pm ET

Mc Shame's campaign is like a fish out of water. Reminds me of the old Chinese Fire Drills. They had months to prepare while the Dems fought it out, and this is the best they can come up with. This is proof that they have no new ideas, just the same old BS. Marie in california, why don't you donate to help your Hero Hilary get out of debt. I'm just glad she didn't get to run the whole country into the ground like she did her campaign.

Oh Boy!!??   July 22nd, 2008 7:27 pm ET

First.

Iraq is not our war to "win"

Second.

Satire of satire is just, well dumb.

Third.

These McCaniacs are really scary. How does one blindly follow the blind.

Foreign policy and all, Iraq and Pakistan do not share borders.

Truly – as a subscriber to the NYT, I wrestled with my reaction. I watched a few TV pundits and decided to laugh. Now, Vanity Fair has given me more to laugh about. Guys, these covers are more about the media than the candidates. Loosten up and have a laugh on them.

D.k   July 22nd, 2008 7:26 pm ET

trying to cover up your predigest and racist illustration from last week? No it dos not work. we all know that McCain is too Old and lacks wisdom and knowledge, it is so sad trying to paint Obama as a Muslim terrorist in fact when you guys are.

McCain's cover is all derivative from true stories. Obama's cover was all blatent falsehoods.

HAHAHAHAAHAHAH!!!! now this is funny. this Vanity Fair cover was good much better than the Obama cover. i like how they have bush in the mirror and how McCain 100 year old self is has to use the cane to walk. if they were attempting satire this worked much bette than the new yorker cover.

Drew from Green Bay, WI   July 22nd, 2008 7:08 pm ET

I get a kick out of the candidates that complain Obama gets unfair (positive) media attention. I'm referring to McCain now, obviously, and Clinton previously. Maybe it's just that Obama is great at creating news and earning the media coverage. Anyway, the best part about this piece is that it's going to make McCain look bad if conservatives look down on it since Obama had a piece done just like this one (which was worse in my opinion).

Miss in Oregon   July 22nd, 2008 7:03 pm ET

FUNNY! Love it.

Janet   July 22nd, 2008 7:02 pm ET

I'm an Obama supporter who can see the obvious media bias towards Obama.I've noticed that since Iowa by the way.And McCain kind of has a point in complaining about the treatment he's received from CNN,MSNBC,and all the other networks. The obsession with his age is sickening. What the heck does his age have to do with anything?

This is something I'd expect from the Republicans not Democrats.
Besides,if Obama was 71,I know many people would say 'With age comes wisdom' but for McCain it's, "Oh he can't stay up past 5"

There are better things to attack him on besides his age. How about his Bush policies? Why can't you people understand that?

Tony   July 22nd, 2008 7:01 pm ET

Last week the BO group was screaming how unfair it is to portray their candidate in such a manner. Tasteless and unexcusable were common terms. I don't see those comments today from that same crowd. If it was tasteless and unexcusable for one person, then it is tasteless and unexcusable for all.

Truth Hurts   July 22nd, 2008 7:00 pm ET

Chuck, Euigene Oregon.   July 22nd, 2008 6:56 pm ET

This is way too funny. McCain complained about not getting equal treatment, be so very careful what you ask for.

Nunya   July 22nd, 2008 6:56 pm ET

While these appear similar on the surface, they really are different beasts. The Obama cover played on things which are patently false – aspersions of terrorism and adherance to Islam. The McCain one played on things which are true – his age and an old addiction problem of hers. Sorry, people, but one is clearly worse than the other regardless of which candidate you support.

Texun   July 22nd, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Cindy and drugs–not a fair shot; she went through rehab and is said to be clean. I respect that. What they might have shown, however, was Cindy ranking in the bucks by selling booze to alcoholics. She made her fortune on an addictive substance, one that has ruined millions of families. That fortune paid for John McCain's political career. It's dirty money.

Mark   July 22nd, 2008 6:55 pm ET

Its right on target. McCain doesn't even remember what countries border Pakistan. He's the cranky old forgetful uncle you don't want driving the car your in or leading the country where you live.

Peter, DC transplant   July 22nd, 2008 6:55 pm ET

It amazes me that things like this get as much press as they do. Seriously, is this really what US politics is all about?

Obama 08   July 22nd, 2008 6:52 pm ET

The difference between the New Yorker cover and Vanity Fair's is that the Obamas' cover was a parody and the McCains' cover is the truth.

Ben   July 22nd, 2008 6:50 pm ET

P – petty
U – unfounded
M – maniacal
A – anger
You're hurting the chances of any future female candidate. Now women are viewed as spiteful voters that hold the idea of a woman president above all else. Don't blame Obama. Personally I find him to be the most appealing candidate in my lifetime. Finally I can vote for someone instead of just against someone. Clinton, McCain, Kerry, Bush, Gore, Clinton, Dole, Dukakis, Bush – nothing really great / all "experienced". My "inexpereinced " heroes – Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr, Lincoln, Mother Teresa, Jesus.

Obama 08 - rocking it baby   July 22nd, 2008 6:48 pm ET

I did not like the Obama Cartoon and this one is just as bad.... at least it is only on the Web though... The thing is I stated previously McCain can not handle the press that Obama handles and if the press cover McCain more it will be covering a Elder man complaining, now that is stereotype that no one want to entertain right? If I said it before and I will say it again stick to the issues... stop mud slinging and America will decide.... the right always throw mud, falsely call names but we on the left do not have to go to their level we are better than that however, If they want to go there we are no wimps hehehehhe ... I must reiterate though the cartoon is simply wrong :0) hehehehehe <== that is silent giggles

Lyle   July 22nd, 2008 6:45 pm ET

The New Yorker cover image reflects how many people view Mr. Obama and his wife. The Vanity Fair “virtual” cover image does not reflect how the McCains are viewed by the majority of Americans and therefore, does not have the same impact.

BV   July 22nd, 2008 6:44 pm ET

I think that Cindy clutching the pills puts it a bit over the edge.
Gee whiz, why did Vanity Fair have to do this??
Dang, I can feel another surge coming.

Denverhead   July 22nd, 2008 6:42 pm ET

A funnier sight gag would have been them doing the 'white man's high five'...high fiving and missing...instead of the dap. Because not only can't we jump, we can't do a proper high five either.

Justin, Ohio   July 22nd, 2008 6:42 pm ET

As a supporter of John McCain, I think this is pretty funny. I'm sure McCain would think so too. I actually laughed when I saw this. Funny how the liberals get upset over the Obama cover, while everyone just laughs about this one. Says a lot about peoples views.

Ex-Republican for Obama   July 22nd, 2008 6:42 pm ET

I think both covers were quite funny. I have my opinion which of them is laced with more historical facts and which is sheer imaginable humor. As I said, they are both funny, whether the picture depicts things that are concrete as historical occurrences in the candidates life, or making fun of Americans to become lunatics with their over reactive imagination.

Kudo's to both the New Yorker and Vanity Fair for some good natured competition between themselves. I like it that they could take this time to give us a good laugh at ourselves as well as our candidates.

John   July 22nd, 2008 6:42 pm ET

What can one expect from the liberal media and CNN?

This is just more anti american chatter, "Black In America day after day features to coincide with Obama-but with all of that hatred-anti white hatred which is trying to emasculate an entire generation of young white males, which I refuse to let happen to my sons, who won the last two elections and is poised to win Iraq, the "lost war" of Barack HUSEIN Obama!

Phil Newton Murphy, Oregon   July 22nd, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Michael   July 22nd, 2008 6:39 pm ET

McCain is a tragedy for the Republican party. He is old, out of touch, not very smart, and lacks personality. He has been wrong about Iraq all this time and continues to press the current administration's agenda like it's the Bible. When will he realize that the current administartion has failed the people? When will he acknowledge that the American people want the occupation in Iraq to end? Even Iraq wants us to leave. Here is a slogan for McCain if he wants to win the election. Get out of Iraq!

Peter   July 22nd, 2008 6:38 pm ET

I'd have put McCain in a crashed jet with a flag saying "I'll NEVER surrender" and Cindy all dressed up in riches with beer cans falling all around... THEN it might come closer to what the NewYorker did.

But then, at least there's some truth to THIS parody.

TheTruthHurts   July 22nd, 2008 6:32 pm ET

The age thing is problematic, but the pills were simply unnecessary. Difference is, no one on the left is claiming Cindy is an addict now. No one is saying John McCain needs a walker. We do point out that he's had some "senior moments" and forgets things he should remember.

I wonder who wins the elderly vote? Many older Americans I speak with are torn. They value McCain's experience, but many know from their own experience that advanced age has challenges that interfere with the intensity of the presidency. We'll see.

Veteran for McCain   July 22nd, 2008 6:25 pm ET

I didn't agree with the New Yorker Cover and I definately don't agree with the Vanity Fair Cover. So it's not alright to make fun of race, but it is alright to make fun of someone who is older. I see how it is.

You know what's funny is that the Dems will lose this election and then what are they going to do? I mean you've had the lead during July in the last two presidential elections and lost both of them. You think this time around it's any different? The country is getting tired of the left leaning media, as well as the hatred that is spewing out on these message boards from the liberals. Why can't we just debate on the issues? Oh wait, because Obama doesn't want to. He realizes he won't be able to speak from a teleprompter and is afraid he might hurt his image.

Sarah, Buffalo, NY   July 22nd, 2008 6:24 pm ET

The difference being that this cover doesn't use racist and hateful stereotypes in order to get its "joke" across. THAT was the offensiveness of the New Yorker cover – not that they made fun of Obama, but that they used gross stereotypes to make fun of Michelle's "blackness" and, to some extent, his as well.

In order for this cover to be anywhere near as offensive, it'd have to utilize similarly offensive imagery and not just "poke fun." I'm thinking something along the lines of McCain laughingly shoving brown people's faces into the dirt or letting their children starve as he eats the tomatoes they pick ("poking fun" at his immigration policies) or perhaps showing him at some rich, white, elite enclave while frothing like a rabid dog about Asians and Asian countries ("poking fun" at his derogatory comments about "gooks").

It's kind of ironic – the New Yorker cover was ostensibly supposed to show how ridiculously fearful, bigoted, and hateful much of the rights' "concerns" about Obama are, but most people seem to have missed that the whole point was about BIGOTRY and HATE. Not legitimate campaign concerns, like whether a candidate may be too old.

I'm disappointed in Vanity Fair's inability to see the forest for the trees.

karen-phoenix   July 22nd, 2008 6:23 pm ET

Go Obama!!! I realized why I do not want McCain. Tooo Old! I'm in my 60's and he remindes me everything that has gone wrong in the last 50 years!! CNN, in addition to your obvious pro Obama bias, it's disgusting how your minions of lock step Obamabots continually use your blog to spew their ugly sarcastic anti-McCain comments ... which of course all slip through your biased blog moderation. Now, you can join the New York Times in destroying objective journalism in this country.

Pat Riot   July 22nd, 2008 6:17 pm ET

Uhh, I think this is a bit much. The New Yorker cover pointed out obvious stereotypes. It didn't dig up the Obamas' sorted past. Making fun of someone's prior addiction to perscription medication is in very poor taste. I feel bad that both of the wives are being subjected to scrutiny but Cindy is getting the worst of it here.

Ben   July 22nd, 2008 6:17 pm ET

McCain supporters writing here seem to really hate liberals. I'm a liberal and have been very upset with republican policies, but would never hate the person promoting them. Logically, McCain has no answers to the problems facing America – affordable health care, cost of living going up while wages are stagnant, job loss, restoring our world image, long term energy needs, educational inequality, affordable college, nuclear proliferation, overcrowded jails, terrorism, broken military, pollution, climate change. Over the past 8 years the policies that John McCain would continue have not helped any of these issues.

Cathy   July 22nd, 2008 6:17 pm ET

The difference between Vanity Fair's cover and the New Yorker is that everthing on The New Yorker's cover has been PROVEN FALSE TIME AND TIME AGAIN about Obama. To the contrary, the "symbolism" of the cover of Vanity Fair in most respects HAS PROVEN TO BE TRUE!!! Cindy did have a drug problem, McCain is elderly and McCain does support Bush.

Why is it so hard for people to see that THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE!!!!

YUCK   July 22nd, 2008 6:16 pm ET

Hurrah! I am a liberal and I loved the New Yorker cover (sweet fun) and I love this Vanity Fair the same way. Relax, folks, we have the two sweetest candidates we've had in my lifetime. God Bless America. But when it comes to vote, well, please: Barack Obama, not dear old (OLD) John!

no no no!   July 22nd, 2008 6:09 pm ET

CNN IF YOU POST TEXAS TD< YOU GOTTA POST THIS

wow but the thins missing; the map showing the Iraq/Pakistan boarder, McCain wheeling over his first wife and a mistress in the closet, a group of Lobbyist sitting at the table, McCain hugging Keating, Phil Gramm with a box of tissue and models of the 6 planes he crashed while in the Navy...oh yeah a vault reading above it "Military Records, top secret"

OH YEAH TEXAS TRAIL DOG...you proved Obama's statement true...got the Bible, wheres da Gun?

Rick   July 22nd, 2008 6:08 pm ET

Obama has a Syrian and Muslim father.
Does that mean the Syrians and Muslims like his opinion.
Does that make it more or less safe in our country?

Philadelphian trapped in Texas   July 22nd, 2008 6:08 pm ET

Unlike the candidates, I appreciated the New Yorker's satire even though I am supporting Obama. The satire was evident to anyone with an IQ above that of a toad, and the accusations it debunked were those of lowbrows even further down the scale.

Vanity Fair's McCain cover is clever as a satire of a satire; but it hits too close to too many partial truths to be comparably tongue in cheek to the New Yorker's. The Obama cover was brilliant in all aspects. The McCain cover is mean-spirited in its depiction of McCain's age and Cindy's past addiction, even if it is on the mark in its placement of W's portrait on the wall and the Constitution burning.

Kimberly   July 22nd, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Still, no comparison to the New Yorker cover...not even close.

Rick   July 22nd, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Would the media please do specials on Wright, Rezko, Farrakhan and Obama's father.
If you forgot, Willam Ayers would be one to discuss also.

If McCain was connected to any of these people, the media would be all over it.

Please hear Americans. They don't want Obama as " ruler"

BOYCOTT the New YUCKER   July 22nd, 2008 6:06 pm ET

This picture of the McCains is still American. That is what is so awful about their depiction of the Obamas. No American burns a flag–that was just mean spirited, and awful.

Your attempt to apologize to the Obamas won't work. Your rag is still filth and you are a slimey, scummy dog of a magazine. You put that garbage out about the Obamas and you and your ilk had a good laugh. May you and your magazines burn in hell.

BARACK AND MICHELLE OBAMA ARE AMERICANS, you animals.

Jim P   July 22nd, 2008 6:06 pm ET

The difference is relevance, Obama's is relevant and McCains is just stupid. This is what this country has come to, we are a pathetic nation and we will get what we have coming!

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   July 22nd, 2008 6:05 pm ET

I like how they dolled up Mrs. McCain. Quite a contrast to how Mrs. Obama was portrayed.
Problem with this is that the senior moments are actually possibly true. The New Yorker was clarly just fodder.

Sally   July 22nd, 2008 6:05 pm ET

LOL

Oh my god, now That's Funny !!!!

Sharon   July 22nd, 2008 6:05 pm ET

Doug – I'm for one agree with you.

Donna   July 22nd, 2008 6:04 pm ET

At least McCain isn't scary.
Obama is so frightening.
What do the American people have to do to make the media understand they are scared to dealth of this man.

Dan, TX   July 22nd, 2008 6:03 pm ET

There are many angry people on the left and right. Very rude crude people. Prejudice and avarice. Hatred masked as holier than thou. The news media feeds it. Don't sit down calmly and consider the options, that's too boring. Pick up a gun and start shooting! That's how to get your political views noticed by CNN. That's what most people posting here have chosen. Irrationality over reason. Look at you all. Shame on you. You do not represent real Americans to me.

Megan, IN   July 22nd, 2008 6:02 pm ET

Is this supposed to be an apology to the Obamas? It is not and the New Yorker is still garbage.

Chavis, MA   July 22nd, 2008 6:01 pm ET

Unfortunately, the McCains are still seen as patriotic, and the Obamas were not dipicted this way. It was awful what they said about Senator Obama and his wife.

Whoever wrote the article about the Obamas is a fool because I'm told the article was pretty good. I will NEVER read it because it is wrapped in garbage. No matter what the article says about the Obamas, the cover still stinks.

Regan, NH   July 22nd, 2008 5:59 pm ET

The New Yorker is still filth, and owe the Obamas an apology. Understand this–no cover of McSame and Cindy Lou will justify what they did to the Obamas.

You burned the American flag on the Obama cover and that was just mean and a vicious lie.

The only cover I will accept is one where the New Yorker is burning in the fireplace, they're dirtbags.

RuperttheBear   July 22nd, 2008 5:57 pm ET

Uh, those are all largely factually correct (Cindy's drug use, McCain's frail physique, etc.) whilst the one of the Obamas reflected lies. Or, as John McCain says "GET OFF MY LAWN, YOU DARN KIDS!"

JC in SC   July 22nd, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Sometimes, the best response is no response. Responding lends credence to the original outrage. This does nothing but soften the New Yorker's blunder, and we need to stay outraged until that type of media is a figment of a racist's imagination!

ABB   July 22nd, 2008 5:56 pm ET

People give each other "dap" not daps. The only people who give daps use the "internets."

Ben   July 22nd, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Big difference here people!!
The depictions on the Obama cover were false (He's a terrorist, she's a radical, they hate America and love Osama)
The depictions on the McCain cover are true (He is old, she did have a pill problem, he would continue the Bush policies)

Wayne   July 22nd, 2008 5:55 pm ET

Bravo Vanity Fair!
Vanity Fair is trying to show the absurdity of the smears on both candidates. But the real obsurdity is people fly off the handle and don't even read the article.

Rave   July 22nd, 2008 5:55 pm ET

That is less than what he really is..
The should have shown McPain in a wheel chair of a mental institution getting shock treatment.
He cares more for Iraqi people and calls us Whiners.. Maybe he should go an live there in his favorite land

Beautiful portrait of GW Bush on the wall next to him. Nice touch.

jonny   July 22nd, 2008 5:53 pm ET

The difference between the two covers is that this one is actually somewhat accurate. The cover with the Obamas was blatant lies.

Anita from Arizona   July 22nd, 2008 5:53 pm ET

Was I the only one who watched Obama chuckle at the New Yorker's cover? I thought to was funny, but some people out there will believe the hype. Don't Believe the Hype on Either Candidate.

Teddy California   July 22nd, 2008 5:52 pm ET

I guess McCain would joke about the picture. Remember he often joked himself he is really old! I do not think McCain will make a fuss about it.

LLOL!

Beware of what u r wishing for!!!

Marie in California   July 22nd, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Love it all! No doubt about it....McCain is older than Obama.

However, I especially liked the New Yorker version of Obama and Michelle the Mouth......factual, it said it all. Well, not quite all.

Things it left out......Obama is an empty suit, he's "speechless" without his teleprompter, there is nothing to depict dirty Chicago politics, I don't see Alice Palmer hanging from the rafters by her fingernails, I don't see Rezko in prison garb, I can't find Auchi anywhere, and where is the thimble that holds all of Obama's experience, especially his foreign policy credentials?

Was for Hillary, now for McCain!

I don't see anything to get excited About... "The Dance of Love"... Comes to everyone. Even John McCain...
Dancing the "Light Fantastic".. Away to go John... I always said this guy was fit for the office of Commander in Cheif... Now even "Vanity Fair" agree..

Liz F   July 22nd, 2008 5:51 pm ET

this is to Doug in New Jersey -
having a independent, liberal opinion is nothing close to hate.
it's more interesting to ask why you feel so threatened by people who are different that yourself.
you must be really young – if you actually looked at the facts, you would see how many right wing conservatives spew dolus dogma regarding women's reproductive rights, civil rights, human rights, gay rights.
you wanna talk about hate?
look in the mirror.

Voter   July 22nd, 2008 5:50 pm ET

The difference is the New Yorker portrayed and perpetuated made up lies by the GOP... this one seems to exaggerate facts a bit more so isn't as offensive. Exaggerations are like caricatures so it's seen as somewhat "funny"

Boston For OBAMA   July 22nd, 2008 5:49 pm ET

All is fair in politics I guess. The shoe is on the other foot. Unfortunately, Vanity Fair used true facts regarding the McCains.

Michelle   July 22nd, 2008 5:48 pm ET

And you know what they won't. This country is ready for a major change and putting another Republican in office is not their choice. Oh well if the press and media do not support him. Media tends to go to whom is making the most noise and has the most attention and that is Obama. Iam still a Hillary fan and wish she had won. But I will not support another 4/8 years of a Republican nominee and certainly not someone who looks and acts like is is 80 years old. The cahnge we needs has to build excitement and have the power of the people behind him/her, McCain doesn't!

Cynthia - Arkansas   July 22nd, 2008 5:47 pm ET

I really wish all of this would stop. McSame's campaign is running the most deceitful, ignorant ads. Oh yea, the same people who ran Bush's campaign runs his. I was hoping that we could just be civil, for once! Obviously not.

Richard   July 22nd, 2008 5:40 pm ET

Its funny cause its all true..

Sebastian   July 22nd, 2008 5:39 pm ET

In the wake of the New Yorker flap, at least folks will view this as a joke; a parody.

That's the difference between this and what the Obamas have to deal with.

As usual, Obama always goes through something 1st and McCain gets to play FOLLOW THE LEADER. It always softens the blow for him. McCain gets the " open-book exam" after Obama has taken the tougher situation.

Matt: honestly   July 22nd, 2008 5:38 pm ET

Doug, as a matter of fact I do disagree. The only thing I hate is people who pose opinion as fact. There is a lot of discontent on the left due to the way this country has gone down the toilet the last eight years. Maybe you are misconstruing discontent and anger for hate.

Lynn   July 22nd, 2008 5:38 pm ET

I stopped buying Vanity Fair along time ago. We knew during the primary who they were in the tank with. I think the New Yorker and Vanity Fair covers were disgusting. .

A+++++ Vanity Fair this is too funny lets see the Neo-Cons defend this one. The New Yorker was a well respected liberal puplication and we just did not have a sense of humor is what was said,so lets see what is said about this cover !!!

Barack the savior with a tele-promp-ter.   July 22nd, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Oh this is blatant RACISM and the evil RIGHT WING Vanity Fair should be ashamed of itself!!! (Yeah, it sounds equally silly when I say it, too.)

But you forgot to draw in his walker, a TV playing the Wheel of Fortune or Matlock or Murder She Wrote, and of course his Depends... and the fact that it's perfectly acceptable to be an "age bigot," but a race bigot, ooooh, that's a no-no. I guess the only way to understand "liberal thought" (I know, it's an oxymoron) can best be summed up with the old adage, "Do as I say, not as I do."

Brian   July 22nd, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Wow. So much hate out there. There was a huge up-roar from both parties over the New Yorker. McCain came out right away and said it was horrible and had no place in politics. Wonder if Obama will say anything about this cover ...

Also, the cover on the New Yorker was clearly a satire and EXTREME and WRONG opinions of Americans. This cover seems to be going after things that are actually true of both Sen. McCain and his wife Cindy. It is horrible to link Sen. Obama and his wife Michelle to terrorists. It is even worse to poke fun at someone for an addiction they fought hard to overcome, old age and burning of the constitution. This was not made in the same light or satire or mind set that the cover of the New Yorker was made. This is worse.

Also it must be pointed out that the New Yorker is a very liberal magazine and their cover simply drew hate from the left and enraged even more people to try to get them to come out and vote for Obama or continue their hate bashing of the Republican Party and/or Sen. McCain. Vanity Fair is also a liberal magazine and their cover is to poke fun at McCain, Republicans and draw more hate from the left in an attempt to bring more folks to Obama.

It is suprising that all this hate from the Left is Causing people to vote. I would like to think Americans are better than that, but from the press and reading these postings it appears that most of the Obama Supports are full of hate ...

Time to get over yourselves and try to have a real discussion.

Ex Democrat for McCain   July 22nd, 2008 5:33 pm ET

Sorry "s for obama", but Hussein Osama is simply not good enough for this countries top office. His learning curve is several years behind, and he wouldn't even give you, a supporter, a straight answer if you put money in his hands and gave him a monica on top of it. But that doesn't bother you, does it.

R.I.F.   July 22nd, 2008 5:32 pm ET

You wanted equal time. Here you go. Also be prepared to see the media hammer you and create faux 3 day media firestorms (i.e.- the fake flip flop that you and the media accused Obama of about Iraq over the 4th of July weekend) like they've been doing to Obama for the past few months. Also be prepared for campbell Brown to spend 3 segments of her 4 segment Election Center show debating the political fallout of you sneezing. Good luck Senator McCain. With all the stuff that we've been crying for the media to report on like your bad jokes and many gaffes and dozens of lobbyist in your camp, and the fact that no one's pushed you to define "victory" in Iraq...you'll need the good luck. Maybe they'll also cover the fact that you gamed the public finance system.

Benjamin Columbus, OH   July 22nd, 2008 5:30 pm ET

I find neither cover thought-provoking or humorous. I believe both candidates, who each are United States Senators, deserve a little more of our respect. Both sides should temper their rhetoric and concentrate on issues. Words like "naive", Mr. McCain and "out of touch", Mr. Obama, are getting a little stale.

Emma, San Jose, CA   July 22nd, 2008 5:28 pm ET

The Vanity Fair cover represented the actual symbolism that constitutes
John McCain – the Bush camp guy, an older man with the limitations we face as we age, the destruction of the constitution. The New Yorker
story did not accurately represent Obama and Michelle. Huge difference!

ANA G. LOS ANGELES. CA   July 22nd, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Belle1   July 22nd, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Bethany in Nashville   July 22nd, 2008 5:24 pm ET

Though McCain 'appears' to be getting the same treatment as Obama with the magazine cover, there is still a very large difference in portraying someone as old, and portraying someone as a terrorist. The first one might be mean... the second is unforgivable.

Jason B.   July 22nd, 2008 5:24 pm ET

This is so not the same thing. These images don't strike fear in the hearts of people. Portraying a potential president as a terrorist who supports the murder of Americans, even if satirical, does. Yeah, the Bush picture is the same as Bin Laden's. Cindy's pills are the same as Michelle's machine gun. McCain's walking aid is the same as Obama's turban. You really showed 'em, Vanity Fair.

As tasteless as the The New Yorker cover.

I wonder if the liberals will clean out the newsstand of this issue as fast or faster than the conservtives did for the New Yorker?

Perhaps CNN can do a follow-up on that.

On_fiayah   July 22nd, 2008 5:22 pm ET

This is really dumb on Vanity's part. The Obama's cover was in regards to smashing myths and stereotypes. The McCain's have dealt with pill popping, befriending Bush, McCain has not referenced the Constitution at any times to the polices he wishes to implement and McCain is old. So I'm not sure what I'm suppose to take from this cover, but I will say it was a poor attempt of pulling "their friend-New Yorker" out of the rut...bad try!

Stupid idea on both parts...seriously guys stop it already. First, New Yorker. Now, Vanity Fair. No longer a subscriber.

The difference between the two covers is that the New Yorker depicted stereotypes of the Obamas, and Vanity Fair depicted some facts regarding the McCains:

New Yorker: –Obama depicted as Muslim False
–Michelle depicted as terrorist False
–Portrait of Bin Laden implying False
they follow his policies
Vanity Fair: –McCain depicted as old True
–Cindy depicted as someone
who abused prescription drugs True
–Portrait of George Bush implying True
they follow his policies

Interesting that media gives equal derogatory treatment to McCain when their hero is insulted–but not equal media coverage of the "messiah" category. Obama, beware the media. They love to build you up and then knock you down. Prepare soon for "The Rise and Fall of Obama."

RCLGuard   July 22nd, 2008 5:04 pm ET

The Obama cover was satire. This cover is true.

YOU ASK FOR IT!!!   July 22nd, 2008 5:04 pm ET

CNN) – John McCain’s campaign complained Tuesday morning that the press wasn’t treating the presumptive Republican nominee like they had covered Democrat Barack Obama. Tuesday afternoon, they got an unexpected jolt of equal treatment: their own parody magazine cover, modeled on the controversial illustration that graced last week’s New Yorker...........are you SATISFIED !!!!!

Ian MN   July 22nd, 2008 5:04 pm ET

hmmmm........they should have had one of Johnnyboy's mistresses hiding in the closet. haha

Judgement over experience   July 22nd, 2008 5:02 pm ET

To all the repuglicans out there who thought the Obama and Michelle cover was great, karma is a bit... ain't it? This is a much truer representation though than the Obama and Michelle cover. Cindy was addicted to pain killers, John did vote for the patriot act thus killing our constitutional rights, he is old, he can barely remember his name and he is a strong supporter of bush policies. I think I will frame it.

Xavier   July 22nd, 2008 5:01 pm ET

That enough equal media attention for you McCain?

Jodi   July 22nd, 2008 5:01 pm ET

This is hilarious! Thanks for the laugh, Vanity Fair – I needed it.

Alex   July 22nd, 2008 5:01 pm ET

good

Sheri   July 22nd, 2008 5:00 pm ET

This picture of McSame and Cindy McSame cannot even scratch the surface of what they displayed of Barack and Michelle Obama which was very outrageous and most of all hurtful and offensive to us Americans.

Jay   July 22nd, 2008 4:58 pm ET

ha ha ha ha! too funny!

Shane   July 22nd, 2008 4:58 pm ET

THEY SHOULD MAKE IT TO PRINT. THAT IS TOO FUNNY

JTSpangler   July 22nd, 2008 4:57 pm ET

I can already hear the uproar from AARP and NA.

ali   July 22nd, 2008 4:57 pm ET

Lisa   July 22nd, 2008 4:56 pm ET

John Mccain looks about 105 years old, with Bush in the background.

Non-Conformist   July 22nd, 2008 4:56 pm ET

Be careful what you ask for Mc Cain

here's the media coverage you've been whinning about ....

Obama Supporter from FL   July 22nd, 2008 4:55 pm ET

That's some funny stuff. As long as the media pokes fun at both candidates, I'm fine with it. Fair and equal!

ANGIE   July 22nd, 2008 4:55 pm ET

WOW IM SPEECHLESS!!!

Bob Indianapolis, IN   July 22nd, 2008 4:54 pm ET

Right on, Vanity Fair! Your issue on Bush, Cheney, Addington and Yoo's war crimes will be required reading in American schools years from now...

Abby   July 22nd, 2008 4:54 pm ET

wow- "John McCain’s campaign complained Tuesday morning that the press wasn’t treating the presumptive Republican nominee like they had covered Democrat Barack Obama. Tuesday afternoon, they got an unexpected jolt of equal treatment"

- Aint that the truth- for the record, I think its unkind to make fun or light of Cindy’s addiction which she beat and the ageism isn’t cool at all but the BILL OF RIGHTS In the fireplace is such appropriate satire.

Doug, New Jersey   July 22nd, 2008 4:54 pm ET

Wow, one liberal rag uses a stupid cartoon to create a fake victim hood of their Messiah that they will later blame on conservatives who had nothing to do with it at all and then another attacks the moderate running for president for no reason at all. Yeah, there is tons of hate in America, but almost all of it resides on the left. If you disagree with that then you just admitted that you hate something as well, facts!!!

Obama - The Right Vote   July 22nd, 2008 4:53 pm ET

Bad week, McCain. Your shine is now officially off....

What!!!   July 22nd, 2008 4:52 pm ET

Turn about is fair play. Let see what both candidates supports have to say about this.
