McCain will meet with Jindal later this week.
McCain will meet with Jindal later this week.

(CNN) - John McCain is set to meet with Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal Wednesday, a move that is certain to increase speculation the Arizona senator is seriously considering the 37-year-old Republican for his running mate.

News of the meeting, first reported by the Washington Post, comes amid reports the McCain campaign has mulled the possibility of naming the vice presidential candidate later this week in an effort to steal the media spotlight from Barack Obama's trip overseas. Sources close to the Republican presidential candidate have indicated that scenario is one of several possibilities that have been recently discussed.

CNN's Political Market: Jindal's stock rises

Speculation first swirled around Jindal earlier this summer when he was one of a handful of politicians McCain invited to his Sedona, Arizona ranch. The long weekend was described as purely social, though former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Florida Gov. Charlie Crist were also in attendance.

Jindal is considered a boy wonder of sorts within the Republican Party, and has been lauded by several conservatives wary of John McCain - including talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh. But the decision would undercut one of the Arizona senator's chief arguments against Obama: his relative lack of experience. The Louisiana governor is nearly 10 years younger than the Democratic presidential candidate.

iReport: Who should be VP? Weigh in!

Jindal has remained mum on whether he is interested in or being formally vetted for the vice presidency.

Meanwhile, McCain specifically avoided answering any questions about his VP timetable Tuesday morning.

Do you people really believe that the Republican Party would actually sellect a non-white man for the VP spot??

A cowboy and an Indian.
Bobby's too smart to fall for that.

David, Silver Spring, MD   July 22nd, 2008 11:30 am ET

Yes, please select Bobby Jindal as VP. Now we just have right-wing loonies who think there's something scandalous about Obama's middle name. If Jindal is McCain's running mate, maybe we'll get some left-wing loonies to insist on calling him by his given name, "Piyush."

Jindal is an odd ball, with a medical background but very antiquated views on evolution and "intelligent design." It's amazing to see how he's been able to use his intellect to adopt views that are clearly bizarre in the modern world, just to pander to a group of voters.

JJ from Arizona   July 22nd, 2008 11:29 am ET

Also, news flash everyone. It's not going to be lieberman, either. They pick VP's to balance a ticket. McCain already has problems with the right wing, how could he pick someone arguably farther left than he is?

Carl from Atlantic City   July 22nd, 2008 11:29 am ET

Bad move for Jindal. If Obama wins (which he will) and has a terribly rough four years (which he will) Jindal could run for the Whitehouse in four years.

This McCain thing is a losing proposition for him.

Throw a bone to the media. They run like –? Old dog with old tricks.

Concerned about the economy too   July 22nd, 2008 11:28 am ET

After reviewing names for McCain's VP...I'm concerned John is not addressing his biggest weakness and a very important issue for the US...lack of experience on the economy. I would think McCain would be smarter to look at someone like STEVE FORBES for VP. I get tired of Presidential candidates primarily looking at what state their VP would bring. I know you need to be elected first, but I think both should be looking beyond the election and consider who is best when he is governing. As we all know....the person that has a winning campaign to be elected...does not mean much on how well he will govern the country.

David from Ohio   July 22nd, 2008 11:28 am ET

If McCain would pick Jindal as his running mate, it would be a rather transparent attempt by the GOP to appeal to minority voters, which it has frankly ignored in its policies. It's amusing when Republicans complain that minority voters choose Democrats out of habit then turn around and propose policies that target those same minority voters.

Marcus, Great Lakes IL   July 22nd, 2008 11:28 am ET

Just because he is a governer doesn't make for a good vice-president and a potential president.

Take Bush for instance...

Gary of El Centro, Ca   July 22nd, 2008 11:28 am ET

Naming Jindal his VP would certainly undercut his argument that Obama is too young and inexperienced to be commander-in-chief. The VP has to be someone ready to step in at a moments notice, and Jindal is younger and more inexperienced than Obama.

Governor Jindal has more executive experience than does Senator Obama. Not to mention the fact that the White House hasn't been won without a Southerner on the ticket for ages.

If McCain does pick Jindal, I may consider voting for him. Otherwise, it's Alan Keyes for me!

A CANUCK   July 22nd, 2008 11:28 am ET

Once again the liberal base is putting words in peoples mouths and not doing their homework.

Keep dreaming.

1. Jundal won't be the VP

-AND-

2. He wasn't the governor during Katrina

The fact of the matter is, the real deciding factor is who Obama selects as VP, not McCain.

And truth be told, both candidates will make terrible Presidents. TERRIBLE. Both of the candidates base decisions on their gut (aka the party lines) instead of the master document (the constitution). Almost 90% of what they say they will do in public is beyond the powers extended to them in the constitution.

An American   July 22nd, 2008 11:27 am ET

Is poor ol' whiddle McCain getting jealous of the Obama? Now, now, take your meds...

Doug   July 22nd, 2008 11:27 am ET

Jindal would fit right in. His ties to energy lobbyists, his opposition to abortion for any reason and rejection of stem cell research would make him attractive to the religious right.

Matt Schoewe   July 22nd, 2008 11:27 am ET

It's looking more and more like Obama's on shaky ground. There's no way he'll win this election.

Mike Dallas   July 22nd, 2008 11:26 am ET

As a Louisiana native and lived there thru governor Edwards(convicted of illegal gambling), believe me, being the governor is setting the height of the bar pretty low. Just look at how the past governor Kathy handled Katrina. Now Jindal loses track of supplies and supplies. I would thing McCrypt is visiting to personally tell him he did not make the final cut, before he announces his choice.

While we are on the subject of bad governor choices, what about HRH, he has certainly turned out to be an individual of stellar integrity and intelligence..........

Chris   July 22nd, 2008 11:26 am ET

Lol, is this a joke? Jindal has no chance. He's from Louisiana. Republicans are not going to lose Louisiana.
There are much better candidates to appeal to the far right. Well, go for it McCain, I want Obama to win anyways.

Obama '08

Piyush "Bobby Outsourcer" JIndal   July 22nd, 2008 11:26 am ET

If Bobby Jindal is selected (I don't think he will be... McCain will fall into the trap of picking Flip Romney), the question will inevitably come up in places like Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Indiana about what exactly Bobby Jindal was doing working for McKinsey as a consultant.

Do a little digging and you'll find he was busy working for Lakshmi Mittal and ArcelorMittal, which took over American steel company ISG.

I wonder what the Lou Dobbs crowd would think of that?

CNN won't post this because I'm sure they contract work to McKinsey as well and wouldn't want negative comments about their Sith Masters.

GO OBAMA   July 22nd, 2008 11:25 am ET

GO OBAMA (This is for you mick)

In all honestly, McCain has dug himself into way too many holes, and does not have enough personality (John Kerry anybody?) He could pick Jesus as his running mate and still lose.

NSmith, New York, NY   July 22nd, 2008 11:25 am ET

Jindal? Hmm, I mean I guess he's qualified for VP, if McCain sees him as more of a manager. He was State University President, Congressman, and Governor. Having said that, I'm backing Obama because the biggest issue is foreign policy, an issue that McCain was wrong on, and that Jindal has less experience than Obama on.

Sue   July 22nd, 2008 11:25 am ET

My bet is that Gov Jindal will not be tagged for VEEP because he is too young to be President IAW Constitution. . .

And, whether some of you dem's believe it or not, republicans do abide by the Constitution of the USA.

OBAMA BACKER   July 22nd, 2008 11:25 am ET

This is all smoke and mirrors which the McSame campaign has become very good at. Jindal has no chance and we all know it will be Plenty or Mitt.

Scott   July 22nd, 2008 11:23 am ET

Jindal should continue to build his resume for a future national run. I find the liberals on these blogs with their charges that the Republicans are racist interesting. Afterall, it was the Democrats that brought race and sexism charges to the forefront in the Clinton/Obama race. Also, I find it interesting that whenever Republicans appoint minorities to high level positions – Powell, Rice, Chow, etc, the left calls the appointees derogatory names such as uncle toms. It is the left that is intolerant of any divergence from the standard left ideology/doctrine.

Bryan   July 22nd, 2008 11:23 am ET

Name one difference (besides race) that makes Obama different than Carter or Mondale? Same sophist socialist political philosophy and pseudointellectual rhetoric... I can repeat the words 'change' and 'future' over and over again, too... does that make me qualified to be President?

Patriotism?   July 22nd, 2008 11:23 am ET

Obam goes abroad and trying to establish good foreign policies and McCain -what he does? Continuously criticise. Cann't he atleast keep his mouth shut for couple of days until Obama returns? McCain talks nonsense about patriotism and winning the war. War mongering and cheer leading for capital punishment? Just get rid of thes old folk like McCain with his outmoded practices..Getting sick of him really.

chuck   July 22nd, 2008 11:23 am ET

This is so funny I can't stop laughing. Call it what you want, but this guy looks more Islamic than Barack Obama ever could even with a turban. The fact that he is so much younger and less experienced than Obama is also laughable. McCain who at times looks like he won't make it another year, would want us to vote for him knowing that this guy would be the next in line for the seat in the Whitehouse. The Republican election scenario just keeps getting funnier and funnier. Rush Limbaugh likes him though. I'm sure the religious nutjobs will think he is great also. Maybe he can perform an exorcism on the Republican party. Oh excuse me, there wouldn't be one then. Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha.

SocialismSucks   July 22nd, 2008 11:22 am ET

Face it Democrats, OBAMA is a poor choice for president as he has little experience to be Commander in Chief.

This fact will not go away no matter how many media journalists you have on your side.

Jindal in short, saved Louisiana's hospital system before the age of 30, Served a term already in Congress (seems a few Obamanation supporters didn't know this), restored the integrity to a state that badly needed it, was the only Louisiana Congressional or gubernatorial person from Louisiana to ever get anything accomplished for Katrina recovery, and has done more in his governorship of Louisiana than his predecessor, Democrat Kathleen Bimbo Blanco.

I cant see the Conservative racists voting for Jindal as VP. I hope he is picked. That will mean most of the Republican racists will just stay home.
You know they only base decisions off of what a name sounds like.

Peter of Oregon   July 22nd, 2008 11:20 am ET

I thought you had to be 40 years old to serve as President. God forbid something happened to John McCain in his first year or two in office due to his old age... would Jindal legally be able to fill his shoes as President?

JJ from Arizona   July 22nd, 2008 11:20 am ET

It won't be Jindal, he's too young. Romney or Guiliani. One of those two.

Michael   July 22nd, 2008 11:19 am ET

Get real. Does anyone actually believe that the republicans would support this guy as a VP? They may like his politics, they may like his youth, but there is no way they will ever support him on the ticket.
I agree with the other postings, this is just an attempt by the MCain camp to steal attention from Obama with Rush helping out.

Dan   July 22nd, 2008 11:18 am ET

Great choice...but I worry about the controversy:

Jindal is a creationist and McCain is older than Adam.

The religious right will just have to to work it out amongst themselves.

An exorcist prevailing over the Senate will be cool, though.

You guys elected a KKK clansman to congress for years and years and you have the nerve to accuse Republicans for Racism?

Here is a hint for you. Republicans put Blacks more into power than Democrats.

J.C. Watts, Thomas Sowell, Walter Williams, Michael Steele, Condi Rice, Colin Powell etc. – These people are not Democrats!

BAnderson   July 22nd, 2008 11:17 am ET

This is an obvious ruse. John McCain is no more going to pick Bobby Jindal than Barack Obama is going to pick Chuck Hagel. This entire experiment is designed to take attention from Senator Obama's historic trip to the Middle East and Europe while at the same time attacking Obama for a surge strategy which would not have been needed if we had not invaded that country in the first place. I would only hope that independent, intelligent people would see through this stuff and demand that the media report the news in a factual manner minus the opinions and innuendos.

Kevin   July 22nd, 2008 11:17 am ET

You people are funny when you feel threatened. To say Jindal has less experience, because he is younger than Obama is ridiculous! Jindal has ACTUALLY RUN A GOVERNEMENT. Obama has barelybeen present to make votes. NObama 08!!!

Funny: He chose the name "Bobby" after watching Bobby Brady from the Brady Bunch on TV. His real name is Piyush. I think McCain should pick the actual Bobby Brady, Mike Lookinland. He's a racecar driver. That's cool. However, Piyush can likely fix the code on government websites to make them easier to navigate. I'm just thinking out loud here.

Eddie Blake   July 22nd, 2008 11:17 am ET

Now, with the more I hear about him – the more he scares me. Not only did he sign a bill to allow for the teaching of Intelligent Design in schools, but he claims to have performed an Exocist on a CLOSET! (he has a YouTube video where he talks about his Fundamentalist beliefs & Exocisms).

McCain should pick Jindal. This is the one pick that would surely be the maverick thing to do and do away with all the talk about inexperience and race. It would then be just about who's best for America. Obama wins that case every day.

Mike Meddaugh   July 22nd, 2008 11:15 am ET

I believe that prior to the election both candidates should release the names of the people that they plan on having in their cabinet. These people play nearly as big a role as the president himself during his administration and knowing who these people are reflects greatly on the president's philosophy for his tenure in office. This would definitely have an effect on the way people voted and would, in general, probably help everyone make a more informed decision on who to vote for.

John   July 22nd, 2008 11:15 am ET

I am utterly flabbergasted at the ignorance on the left. They are much more interested in name calling and talking points than doing an ounce of research that would help them discover:
Jindal's experience outweighs Obama's.
Obama is as qualified to be president as a middle school student is to be a teacher.
We were absolutely right to wage the war with Iraq for numerous reasons.
The fact that we are not in a recession after two major hits (housing and gas – neither are Bush's fault), says that the economy, as a WHOLE, is incredibly strong.
Repealing the Bush tax cuts would send the worldwide economy into a nosedive (according to a Nobel Prize winning economist).
But you folks just keeping drinking the Kool-Aid rather than do any reading on your own.

Also, for those of you sooooo in love with Barack Obama, what exactly is he looking to change? Do you know? Can you carry on a conversation about the changes he is looking to instill? Or is your blind hatred of all things GWB or Dick Cheney influencing your thought process?

Don't worry, I don't expect you to be able to answer, haven't met one who could yet!!!!!

JC   July 22nd, 2008 11:12 am ET

Vice Presidents don't really need any experience because historically they don't really do much. They often manage pet projects or go places to represent the President when he doesn't want to go. In some administrations, the Vice President hasn't even been part of the inner circle. The most important function/job of the Vice President is to become President if the President dies. Being Vice President is more of a spring board for future aspirations.

Does this just really show how petty most politicians are? Senator Obama is abroad helping to heal the negative perceptions some in foreign countries have of America (following eight years of failed foreign policy under the Bush Administration), and Senator McCain can't steal the media spotlight by speaking substantively about foreign policy issues because he just wants to continue the Bush agenda.

In the words of Jed Clampet (of Beverly Hillbillies fame for those of you too young to remember), "Pit-tee-full ... Pit-tee-full!"

OK, I have had it...

Let's try to add some substance to the comments rather than "Go Obama". How many times can you write that for every post regardless of the topic at hand?

Let's look at how the NEW Republican governor of Louisiana is making a difference. Blanco is out and she was a contributor to the lack of response to Katrina. You can blame the president but at least he did not run and hide under a rock in shame.

Louisiana is turning a new leaf and maybe Jindal can get things done on a national level too. He gets it.

Obama-Junkie, IL   July 22nd, 2008 11:08 am ET

Of course Jindal would be interested in the being McCain's VP.

The GOP party leaders and the mainstream media (CNN, Washington Post, & others) should be ashamed of themselves for touting Piyush Jindal's name as a VP candidate. Yes, his name is Piyush Jindal, not this self-appointed crap calling himself "Bobby". There is no way the GOP party leaders and conservative media elite would be touting Jindal's name if Obama was not the Democratic nominee.

I personally would love McCain picking Jindal as his running mate. The Republican party leaders and the conservative media elites are in for a rude awakening if there is a McCain/Jindal ticket. This McCain/Jindal ticket would get crushed in the November election. I would not be surprised to see Bob Barr get 35% of the Republican vote in November which will allow Obama to win in a landslide!

PA-Democrat   July 22nd, 2008 11:08 am ET

Please, please, please McCain pick Jindal. I would love to see the racist idiots of this country collective heads explode.

Actually I have nothing against Jindal. He is the most interesting of the potential GOP VP's in that he is less well known and would bring a new story. Romney and Gulianni's stories are baked and burned by now.

Definitely part of the attempt to steal the spotlight from Obama, as I suspect Michael Savage's ridiculous autism comments were.

I am itching for the Obama and McCain camps to agree on debates. Obama will mop the floor up with that fool. How many times will McCain refer to being a prisoner of war? Wanna take bets. Sounds like an old coot in a rocking chair spinning yarns, "When I was a young man ..............

BTW, who was that idiot on CNN last night who said something like "Obama referred to 57 states, perhaps it was 57 Islamic states". First, when Obama said that he was referring to the 57 CONTESTS in the democratic primaries (including Guam, Puerto Rico, etc.) and mad a slip of the tongue. Could the fools please get over it – Obama is not in McCain's gaffathon league. And worse, now supposedly legitimate commentators on CNN are stooping to the Muslim smears? Whoever McCain picks, it will taint their career. Speaking as a Republican – now voting Democrat. McCain is bringing nothing good or positive to his race. In an election year when the Republicans were not expected to win anyway, when our country is facing critical problems, he is bringing NOTHING NEW. Doesn't look good for McCain.

AA   July 22nd, 2008 11:07 am ET

Mitt Romney is the pick for rich people like himself. People who have no money or are really hurting in the economy would never go for Romney who is a billionare. It doesn't matter anyway because McCain has no chance of winning this election. Only a fool would vote for McCain.

James D   July 22nd, 2008 11:07 am ET

This choice would seal McCan's fate....losing big in Nov.
McCain/Jindal vs Obama/Biden...are you kidding me? The GOP won't win 10 states!

Talk about lack of experience !!!! Given John's health issues and age...........will this young man be ready to take command in an emergency ??? Hopefilly McCain is having this meeting to advise Bobby he is not in the running. This young man would be a choice that would represent POOR JUDGEMENT and frankly, lack of foresight for the welfare of our nation.

Peace is patriotic and do not want to be reminded of 2 failed wars and the loss of sooo many friends. I shut McCain off anytime he comes on because it brings up bad feelings of the failed past republican party!!! Peace is patriotic. I'm 64, a republican who wants NEW experience in Washington!!!!! GO Obama!!!

Brian   July 22nd, 2008 11:05 am ET

Kevin in Ohio,

That was probably the most unitelligent comment I think I've ever seen. This country is in a complete mess right now in every way and without a change of direction I'm not sure we could ever fix it. Some of the irreversible damage has already been done. God help us in preventing the deterioration any further.

Kevin you need to wake up and look around. It can't get much worse. We need it fixed now before we are a rotting nation of hate, fueled by people such as yourself. And in case you really are as dumb as your comment leads me to believe, Obama supporters are mocking the stereotypical Republican attitudes. They are not being racist themselves. It's called sarcasm.

I used to be a Republican, but that party is destroying everything I once loved. Some of you need to wake up and look around. We need to be rebuilt in every way.

John   July 22nd, 2008 11:04 am ET

Why is it that the GOP fawns over nut jobs. Does McCain plan to fix the economy by exorcism?

Silly Put-Lilly Put   July 22nd, 2008 11:03 am ET

Jindal- don't go with McCain . All he does is criticise Obama. Y ou are better off as governor.MCain is going to loose. He is so jealous of Obama and wants to steal the thunder by announcing a VP or lack of it. If he thinks Obama is young, you are just a baby.

bunch of whinners   July 22nd, 2008 11:02 am ET

What a F. Bunch of whinners. McCain ... wisdom? what a shame.... just to take the spotlight away from an another american representing his country. Where were McSameSnub when he was 47? He was cheating on his wife.

Thats not going to help you with a Black Vote McCain, the dude has East Indian Heritage, and they dont like Black folk

Donna   July 22nd, 2008 11:02 am ET

The Katrina debacle is still going on..Jindal is the Governor NOW and his state is STILL IN PERIL...he has done nothing to help them get MUCH NEEDED supplies back to Louisiana where they belong...

I wonder what Mitt is thinking about Jindal possibly getting the job instead of him? All that brown nosing gone to waste!!!!!!

It really doesn't matter much who McCain picks as his VP running mate because that won't deter from the fact that he is OLD and A 3RD BUSH...everyone knows that the Republicans were grooming Jindal in the first place....

Matt   July 22nd, 2008 11:02 am ET

Although Jindal seems to be a sound conservative and might help with the black vote (it might make people think McCain cares more about post-Katrina Louisiana), he might not be the best choice. He is a young governor from a completely different minority group that might alienate people who vote solely on race. As a republican and a white person I take offense to the comment that whites would only vote for somebody who is white. Many black people are voting for Obama because he is black so it is an issue that transcends race. I would love to see former Oklahoma congressman J.C. Watts, who is black, as McCain's running mate. That said, I don't think Jindal or Watts are looking to take the Veep spot but it would help if McCain picked someone who is young, energetic, and has a sound understanding of economic issues.

SocialismSucks   July 22nd, 2008 11:02 am ET

Jindal had more experience than Obamanation at 25 than Obamanation has at 47.

Those who claim otherwise do not know of his accomplishments. I challenge any of you to debate the experience of Obamanation vs. Jindal.

Julie, WI   July 22nd, 2008 11:01 am ET

With all of th brown nosing that Rudi, Mitt and Joe are doing, you mean to tell me he will not pick one of them? You don't say!

MPinNJ   July 22nd, 2008 11:01 am ET

We are so screwed! We have major problems in this country ranging from human rights inequities to economic disaster to war to looming environmental disaster, and we just can't seem to raise a candidate qualified to run the place who is not mired in scandal, religious idealism/extremism or some other off-the-wall nonsense. Are there any realistic, non-pandering, level-headed Americans left to lead us or vote for them?

What if?   July 22nd, 2008 11:00 am ET

To Obama Supporter from FL...Obama Supporter from FL July 22nd, 2008 10:22 am ET.........I think that would be great. All the people turned off by a brown man winning the presidency will REALLY have no one to vote for then. It simply couldn't be better – he isn't white (we KNOW the republicans won't be thrilled with that), and he's even younger than Obama (which pretty much kills the "inexperience" argument)!!

Second your comment: Can't wait to see this play out, it's going to be interesting to see what excuse mcsame and his supporters will use now............thank you mcsame, he's everything you use against Obama.

ERICA, Ohio   July 22nd, 2008 11:00 am ET

Obama 08: white, 60 year old woman   July 22nd, 2008 11:00 am ET

Is this CNN's attempt to give equal time to McCain?? When you read the various blogs about McCain there is absolutely no substantitve direction, or proposals. No wonder George Senior envies Obama...who wouldn't have rather been on his trip instead of standing in front of a golf cart hearing his candidate wax on again about the surge!!

NO Jindul ..NO way! Pick Romney or Hillary. Lets pick a more traditional candidate here people!! This is for a job at the White House as VP, not for the U.N. I am a staunch Hillary supporter who turned to McCain to maintain some tradition in the White House, note this potential three ring circus..Romney, pick Romney ..he is Morman and traditional.

There are some evil spirits in Washington–the skill might benefit us greatly.

SocialismSucks   July 22nd, 2008 10:59 am ET

CNN, Jindal may be 10 years younger than OBAMA, but has 10 times the EXPERIENCE than Obamanation .

Research Jindal's accomplishments and compare them to Obamanation and you will see that Jindal is a great choice for VP, better yet, president.

In Louisiana, his reforms have already paid dividends by gutting wastefull social spending that has handicapped this state into being ranked next to last for ever.

tmp   July 22nd, 2008 10:58 am ET

who cares!!!! Obama 08!

PUMA-Jessie   July 22nd, 2008 10:58 am ET

McCain knows where this election will be won and lost. Not in Louisiana, but in Florida, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The DNC has already gave him Florida and now all he has to win is one of the remaining three and he will be the next President, Do not believe the Obama baloney that he is going to win some red states to offset his loses in the big three states. New Jersey, a normal blue state, which sometimes trends a close Republican vote, is already starting to trend that way now. The only hope the Democrats have of winning is to nominate Hillary Clinton and the super delegates better start thinking about tha now, before its to late.

blogatlantic   July 22nd, 2008 10:58 am ET

McCain definitely has a strategy if he makes this choice. Ex-service men, always use strategy to nail the competition. Lets wait until the news turns to known fact. A mixure of old school and new school, sounds good, but is that is best card to play in a highly charged election year?. That may be a question for future discussion!

Walt, Belton,TX   July 22nd, 2008 10:57 am ET

I don't know what all the fuss is about McCain has to pick Lieberman for VP so Joe can keep reminding him what country has what sects and where to find them on a map.

I didn't think it would be possible for America to elect a bigger Buffoon than their current President but it could be coming "MY FRIENDS!".

John, Dar es salaam, Tz   July 22nd, 2008 10:57 am ET

mugabe will be the best fit for mcsame

Shawn   July 22nd, 2008 10:57 am ET

So much for the inexperience argument. Your hitting Barack over the head about his experience and you are going to give the VP to a 37-year old! He's one heart attack away from the presidency. If this is the choice, McCain is the most incongruent politician in a long time.

Tommie   July 22nd, 2008 10:57 am ET

McCain is guaranteed a landslide lose in November if he nominates a 37 yr old, 1 yr on the job governor.

Chris   July 22nd, 2008 10:56 am ET

Then there's the fact that he believes he exorcised a demon from a friend. Just what we need one step (or year given McCain's age) away from the presidency, a evangelical extremist. And, what are his accomplishments other than getting elected? Lousiana isn't exactly leading the nation in most categories.

Strategery   July 22nd, 2008 10:56 am ET

Mac needs to select CT guv Jodi Rell and swipe the soccer mom vote. Rell is a tough, yet likeable pro-business taskmaster. Some see her lack of a college degree as an obstacle. Others see it as a plus for blue collar voters.

Also, being that Jindal's parents are from India, will the GOP scrutinize their own for not being white?

The Constituion provides that the President should be 35 years old. We've never had one that young.

To set the record straight – Obama was and is a Constitutional Law Scholar, Served 8 yrs as Illinois Senator and 3 as US Senator. He is in no way a baby in politics. Besides we now know that you don't need 'experience' to run this country – GWB had so called experience- you need sound judgement which Obama has tons of and Mcwar sorely lacks.

Jonathan   July 22nd, 2008 10:53 am ET

Of course he would be a great choice! He is a governor, which gives him executive experience, something Obama nor McCain have. Also, the 'republicans wouldn't put a minority on their ticket' line is such crap. If I am not mistaken, it was the current republican administration that placed the FIRST African-American man as Sec. of State and the FIRST African-American woman as Sec. of State. Not to mention the FIRST Asian-American woman as a department head as well. So, the democrats need to stop that talk and know the facts.

To those that argue that Republicans won't support a non-white VP – Bush 1 & 2 have given more minorities prominent positions (court & cabinet) than any other administration (C. Thomas, C. Powell, Rice, etc.) so branding republicans as racists is completely misguided.

Hey you wise guys who have never been through a presidential election cycle before, much less participated in a campaign:

Go travel through non-liberal, suburban America and hear what real folks are saying. Your blather demonstrates you don't know what you are talking about and what will decide this election. This is not a sports event between your favorite team and someone else's.

Why do you think the polls are so close? And what people are really concerned about is energy and economy. Candidate who sticks and nails these wins. Barry Obama is not playing well because he is not voicing and acting on these ordinary people's frustrations.

As Carville said, Its about the economy, Stupid.

PUMA - Murphy   July 22nd, 2008 10:51 am ET

Like the vast majority of PUMA members, I'm not sold on McCain. We are not closet Republicans, we are out-of-the-closet HRC supporters who feel disenfranchised, disconnected, and possibly scammed out of our voted candidate.

While I can see the motivation behind choosing Jingal (balancing the age + non-white), it doesn't sway my vote or many of the PUMA fellowship.

We are organizing a fund raiser to send PUMA's to the convention. We have high hopes of not just having our voices heard, but of having our Democratic nominee placed front and center or side-by-side with Barack.

PUMA-PV (Priority of Vote)

1. HRC

Bobby Jindal is a conservative governor, an independent thinker and very good at defining and discussing political and economic issues of great importance to the future of this country. He would be an excellent addition to the McCain ticket.

Jindal will have his day.

McCain will win in '08.

Henry n New York   July 22nd, 2008 10:48 am ET

McCain is a poor candidate, he has changed positions on everything from off shore drilling to the football team he told his captors when he was a prisoner; he believes that being a prisoner of war gives him some magical insight and ability to run America and be the leader of the free world. He has a limited understanding of foreign affairs considering his lack of knowledge on who the parties are in various conflicts; he believes Iraq and Pakistan share a border and that Chezoslovakia is still in existence. He doesn't know how to operate a computer and is learning the "google". If this is even a close race this country will reveal an ignorance that defies logic. His choice of VP is not important to the fact that he is lacking even the basic skill of being computer literate. This is a no brainier I can only believe the republican party is holding out hope that he will win as a result of their smear campaign but never really expects him to. He is just a figure head candidate and his lose would be expected as is should be.

some guy in New Hampshire   July 22nd, 2008 10:46 am ET

For the oldest presidential candidate in history to nominate a VP who has no serious experience other than a partial term as governor of (please excuse me) a relatively minor state would completely destroy McCain's argument that Obama isn't experienced enough to be president. If Jindal is experienced enough to be a heartbeat away, then Obama must be ready for the presidency right now. In addition, the fact that Jindal would consider himself qualified to step into the presidency would indicate that he doesn't know the job's requirements. Having a young minority on the ticket would make nice pictures on the TV news, but as a presidential decision it would be a serious mistake and an indication that McCain's judgment isn't what it should be - and that he's more interested in image than in substance.

Truth. you wont hear it to your face from these cowards unfortunately =( theyd have to have their gun out to feel strong first id think.

John   July 22nd, 2008 10:44 am ET

So far Jindal has done nothing in Louisiana except impose an irrational hiring freeze that crippled the state's university system and then waffle and waver over whether or not to veto a legislative pay-raise, all while babbling on about "cleaning up" Louisiana politics–none of which has endeared him to Louisiana voters. What exactly makes him a "boy wonder"? Tight shorts ? Or the ability to say, "Holy Election ploys, Senator, you want me to be your token minority? Jeepers!"

Linda31   July 22nd, 2008 10:44 am ET

HOW do you come to that conclusion?
The Governor is a decision maker. Governor of Louisiana is a particularly tough job. Barrack NEVER has been in any Executive role in his life. Barrack is a "consensus" guy but the office of President is an "executive" position.

Giving Barrack his fist "executive" job as president of the USA is a real stretch. At least Jindal has governed a state (and done so very well).

It's not going to matter in the end. McSame can't win.
BARACK THE VOTE!!

Sean in Iowa   July 22nd, 2008 10:35 am ET

It is funny to me that CNN likes to report news like this:

"...a move that is certain to increase speculation..."

which in itself is increased speculation. Its like they are trying to say, "We're on the outside of this whole thing, but you are likely to see other news organizations speculate about this more now." It seems a little disingenuous, since they are usually among the first to increase their speculation.

Obama 08
CNN please post!!

Glenn   July 22nd, 2008 10:35 am ET

Please pick Jindal, McCain. If there's one thing this country needs, it's more exorcism.

JDS N.C.   July 22nd, 2008 10:35 am ET

Jindal has accomplished more in his time than Obama. Give me a break CNN. Yea he is 10 years younger but has 10 yrs more experience than oBama.

Travis (in the real world   July 22nd, 2008 10:35 am ET

That a go McWar.....pick your VP to take the spotlight away from Obama ( the next president)......you are an idiot.

NG in DC   July 22nd, 2008 10:35 am ET

No offense to the young governor but he'd be the nail the in the coffin to McCain's chances.

Brooke   July 22nd, 2008 10:33 am ET

What is this talk of "inexperience?" He was a Louisiana Cabinet Secretary in his mid 20s and then served several terms in Congress before being elected Governor. Seems to me that he's got more experience than the Obamabots "saviour."

JB   July 22nd, 2008 10:33 am ET

You can't say Obama is not qualified and then run with a 37 year old.

John   July 22nd, 2008 10:33 am ET

He's 10 years younger and has 3 times the experience. I'll take the experience.

Lorna, NY   July 22nd, 2008 10:33 am ET

Who cares!

McCain08   July 22nd, 2008 10:32 am ET

Hmm, i really dont think he'll pick Jindall. I do really admire him and think he's a great role model, but dont think he has the experience. I do really hope he's part of the administration though.

Pick Romney – its the best ticket.

Emma   July 22nd, 2008 10:32 am ET

Let McCain pick an inexperienced governor ten years younger than the current democratic candidate and did I say with NO experience. McCain is slowly loosing all of his arguments against Obama.........

Hip Hip Hooray for Jindal! Go ahead McCain and pick an inexperienced VP, this will surely be labeled as "lack of judgement."

Bendo   July 22nd, 2008 10:32 am ET

This pick would be very interesting, this guy has been in office, what less that a year and they want him to be VP because of his conservative creditials?? you got to be kidding, if this happens maybe all those whities in WV, PA and Ohio....BO look better every day then uh?

Jim   July 22nd, 2008 10:32 am ET

While Jindal may be younger than Obama he has leadership experience. If you see his interviews he has already has a few accomplishments as governor in his short time in Louisiana. Hes already more qualified than Obama.

AB, NJ   July 22nd, 2008 10:31 am ET

It is clear Mccain is not considering Jindal for the VP position but is just meeting with him in order to increase the buzz of his vp search and steal some of the attention away from Obama's high powered delegation tour of Europe and the Middle East which so far has been very successful especially with Al Maliki's position on troop withdrawal.

webster208   July 22nd, 2008 10:31 am ET

I have heard good things about Booby Jindal, and have heard him talk in one of the Sunday talk shows. He is very sensible. I think he will be a good choice for V.P.

Marcus, Great Lakes IL   July 22nd, 2008 10:30 am ET

If McCain opts for Jindal, the Democrat's would have a field day, ESPECIALLY since Jindal is 10 years younger than Obama which, whould make McCain look more and more like a waffle iron.

Wonder what Lou Dobbs would say since it is apparent that he likes McCain.

BubbaGump   July 22nd, 2008 10:30 am ET

Jindal is a firm supporter of creationism and exorcisms. Seems like a good match for McCain.

Oluwa   July 22nd, 2008 10:29 am ET

Yeah, please pick him cause Limbaugh says so, incase the inevitable happens in office, you'll have a teenager running the white house!
This is not news, stop putting everyone that talks to McCain on the VP list and stop selling them as news. Everyone's a prospect, anyone is.
I hope the repubs are happy that the Media is talking about them now.

Bob   July 22nd, 2008 10:29 am ET

Jindal or Huckabee would be good choices. Romney would be a disaster–if Mitt couldn't win his own party's nomination with all that money, how on earth does he expect to be appealing in the general election?

Christopher, Madison, WI   July 22nd, 2008 10:29 am ET

I think he is a terrorist...right? I mean by the right's standards he looks muslim, therefore? Come hypocrites spin this one!

MikeH   July 22nd, 2008 10:28 am ET

Bobby Jindal would look like McCain's personal medical attendant, adjusting McCain's IV drip, changing his bed pan, personally checking to see that McCain's Bearings aren't lost.

Billy   July 22nd, 2008 10:28 am ET

Anything to try to steal Obama's thunder.

Tomorrow, McCain will announce the villain in the next Batman 3 movie. Thursday, McCain will juggle 3 puppies and a chainsaw.

Tim   July 22nd, 2008 10:28 am ET

Oh I hope John McSame picks him. Please!!!! Please!!!! He is the Louisiana Gov, but he had no clue of the damage to the offshore drilling rigs for the storm that devistated Lousiana.

Molly Weasley   July 22nd, 2008 10:27 am ET

Obviously, it's John McCain's choice. But does he really want to pick someone for VP who claims to have performed an exorcism?

17 year old future politician   July 22nd, 2008 10:27 am ET

Once again I think McCain's arguement to Obama about inexperience would disappear if this happened. If McCain were to be unable to complete his full term (if something happened) this would put an inexperienced person in command, something McCain claimed would be bad. If McCain does this he would be very hipocritical and could hurt his campaign

Obama/Sebelius 08'

Citizen Watch   July 22nd, 2008 10:27 am ET

If the Republicans want to give the Democrats a run for their money, think Jindal is an excellent choice. I have read his record. He complements McCain in many of the ways McCain needs to be complemented. I also like the fact that he was a Rhodes scholar not because I am an elitist, but because I think more leaders should complete some post-secondary study abroad. Does Jindal speak more than one language?

Ian   July 22nd, 2008 10:27 am ET

Funny how it's somehow different when McCain does things. Barrack has no experience, but McCain is going to pick this guy for his running mate. What a joke.

On a side note, who proof-reads these stories? McCain is going to "steel" Obama's thunder? What does that even mean?

Greg, NY   July 22nd, 2008 10:27 am ET

McCain is just doing this to try to get back into the media. There is no way he'd pick Jindal.

Louisiana is already deep red and is staying that way.

As mentioned in the article, he's 10 years younger than Obama, which undercuts the inexperience argument.

On the other hand, I really hope he does pick him. Taking away that argument and not gaining a state would be great for Obama.

Mary   July 22nd, 2008 10:26 am ET

Gov Jindal could not even manage the FEMA stuff for Katrina victims and wants to be president. Where was he when FEMA aid to Katrina victims were being redirected? Why doesn't CNN ask him the tough questions about Katrina-gate?

George   July 22nd, 2008 10:26 am ET

Jindal does nothing to help McCain. If he is selected, Game Over for MacCain.

Lieberman is the choice for the slam dunk.

Corbett, Washington DC   July 22nd, 2008 10:25 am ET

"Jindal has remained mum on whether he is interested..."

Really? Because I remember reading – and seeing footage – just two weeks ago of Jindal saying he doesn't want to be VP, that he has the job he wants (governor of LA).

Hey, whatever, let McSame pick Jindal... just what America needs – another guy who believes in hocus pocus like exorcisms.

Marcus Allen   July 22nd, 2008 10:25 am ET

Jindal would be great. Nice guy, articulate and committed to real results. He'd be a good fit.

Ms. RDS   July 22nd, 2008 10:25 am ET

yeah sure, hate to say it but the day the republican party picks a minority for the 2nd highest office in the land, yeah that'll be the day.

Phil, FL   July 22nd, 2008 10:24 am ET

Don't do it Jindal. Don't tarnish your own career by attaching your rising star to a falling wagon. McWarmonger is going to lose. We are tired of the Bush admin., and McWarmonger wants to continue it.

You're young, you can wait.

Obama '08

rupert   July 22nd, 2008 10:24 am ET

This is so sad:

"McCain campaign has mulled the possibility of naming the vice presidential candidate later this week in an effort to steel the medial spotlight from Barack Obama's trip overseas."

Any one else get the feeling McCain feels like the ugly girl at the prom?

McCain is ghetto   July 22nd, 2008 10:24 am ET

John McCain, you are schizophrenic, you harp continuously on Obama's so called lack of experience yet you might consider picking a VP with even less 'experience' than Obama? Give me a break. Good thing it takes sound judgement to run this country which Obama has loads of and you sorely lack.

Joe Reg   July 22nd, 2008 10:24 am ET

McCain/Jeb Bush for V.P.

Go go go.

Obama Supporter from FL   July 22nd, 2008 10:23 am ET

Can you fix this in the article:

in an effort to steel the "medial" spotlight from Barack Obama's trip overseas.

Obama for President   July 22nd, 2008 10:23 am ET

Jindal – Please stay away from McCain – Do not agree to be his VP candidate.

It will be your first major political loss

Old Stradlater   July 22nd, 2008 10:23 am ET

Maybe he's vetting him for exorcist instead of VP.

Obama Supporter from FL   July 22nd, 2008 10:22 am ET

I think that would be great. All the people turned off by a brown man winning the presidency will REALLY have no one to vote for then. It simply couldn't be better – he isn't white (we KNOW the republicans won't be thrilled with that), and he's even younger than Obama (which pretty much kills the "inexperience" argument)!!

Adam   July 22nd, 2008 10:22 am ET

Jindal is a great candidate for VP. Hes young energetic and will provide a conservative balance. He has been a great governor

Susan   July 22nd, 2008 10:22 am ET

This pick is funny, if it were to be. romney and McLame hate each other, so he is probably out. They Republicans do not off a viable President or Vice President to the country. Jindal is not the Boy wonder the Republicans think he is. Ask people in La. their real feelings baout what he has accomplished in their state.

Abby   July 22nd, 2008 10:21 am ET

whatever. They are just pretending to be considering Jindal. There is no way McCain is going to risk not getting the racist vote by picking Jindal.

Tony   July 22nd, 2008 10:21 am ET

Who cares, McCain still won't win!

Becky   July 22nd, 2008 10:20 am ET

Anybody but Mitt, in the small chance that McCain becomes president.

Debby, NJ   July 22nd, 2008 10:19 am ET

Boy Wonder won't help you either McShame.
BARACK THE VOTE AMERICA !!!
