Barack Obama claimed to be a member of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee, which he is not.

(CNN) – Responding to an Israeli reporter’s question Wednesday on his commitment to protect the Jewish state, Barack Obama pointed to a bill “we passed” in the U.S. Senate Banking Committee that tightens sanctions and authorizes divestment from Iran. “My committee,” he called it.

Except that he isn’t a member of the Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs.

“Just this past week, we passed out of the out of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee - which is my committee - a bill to call for divestment from Iran as way of ratcheting up the pressure to ensure that they don’t obtain a nuclear weapon,” Obama said at a press conference in Sderot, Israel.

In a press release from Obama’s Senate office the day the committee passed the Comprehensive Iran Sanctions, Accountability and Divestment Act, Obama applauded its passage and pointed to provisions included that he had offered in the Iran Sanctions Enabling Act of 2007.

The Republican National Committee quickly responded Wednesday morning with an e-mail highlighting the gaffe. Obama’s campaign has not yet responded to CNN’s request for clarification of his remark.

UPDATE: An Obama spokesman tells CNN “it was his bill, not his committee,” referring to the Iran Sanctions Enabling Act that the Illinois senator sponsored and introduced in May 2007. The measure was then referred to the Banking Committee, and passed a vote of 19-2 on July 17.

In a meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu Wednesday, Obama told the former Israeli Prime Minister, “I could fall asleep now standing up,” after Netanyahu asked him how his whirlwind trip to the Middle East and Europe is going.

Obviously Sen. Obama was pointing out "his contributions" to the bill which made the final cut. I wonder what contributions Sen. McSurge has made to any bills since the surge?!

7% of Americans don't know how many states America has, the most common wrong reply is 48 or 51 (not 57).

87% of Americans think Checkoslovakia is still a country.

I really couldn't care less about any "gaffe" that either candidate makes. Since when is everyone supposed to be mistake-free 24/7? And that goes for both parties.

By reading some of the comments of the Obama supporters, it's easy to see why the Dems have lost the last two elections to a clearly unqualified candidate: you have no policy other than saying, "no, you did!" or "yeah, but you once said blah blah!" Take some responsibility and win an election or please keep quiet.

When speaking to the American people, Obama's claimed credit for everything else that isn't his and for the products of the hard work of others for over a year now.

Why should he try to fool the Israeli media with the same nonsense?

I don't know why people bring McCain into this . . he's no better. The finger pointing might divert attention away from the flaws of the media's darling, but the sad truth is, people in this country have their brains shut off.

Obama is a prolific liar.

Pie   July 23rd, 2008 4:49 pm ET

I love hearing all the Obamaites doing their best to rationalize their Dear Leader flat out lying to them.

And it wasn't the "royal we" - he said "MY committee". First person possessive is pretty clear.

Derek, Riverside CA   July 23rd, 2008 4:49 pm ET

"Which is my committee" is not the same as using the royal "we". He flat out lied to an audience who will no doubt never check nor know what committee he is on.

He is trying to instill this idea that he has done something in the Senate when the simple fact is, Mr. change has not actually tried to change anything as a member of the US Senate. Contrast that with McCain, who has sponsored bills to help the environment, Cap and Trade, and to take money out of politics with campaign finance reform, McCain-Feingold. Also, he tried McCain-Kennedy to implement comprehensive immigration reform. By the way, these are all MAJOR issues that he went against his party on and cosponsored with Dems for the good of the country. At the same time, Obama has the biggest party line voting record in the Senate. So, who is for change again?

jim in DC   July 23rd, 2008 4:47 pm ET

Sad   July 23rd, 2008 4:41 pm ET

CNN you guys should be ashamed of yourselves. Honestly, you are doing a disservice to the American people by making this appear to be an important story when in fact it is not.

John McCain got historical facts wrong about the surge and I haven't heard a peep about it from you guys. He is running his campaign based on his foreign policy credentials. So for him to make a gaffe about something that he is saying is his strongest point is newsworthy.

You guys at CNN are truly bias in your coverage and do a great disservice to the public by covering up gaffes of one candidate over another.

dave g, minneapolis   July 23rd, 2008 4:38 pm ET

If "we" means the USA, then what does "my committee" refer too? And this is not "one gaffe to McCain's 20."

So, Obama missed key votes in his actual committee, now doesn't seem to know what committee he is actually on. Also he said, 10,000 people died in a Kansas tornado, kids with asthma need breathalyzers, there are 57 states, and on and on.

McCain has a number of gaffes too. These two candidates don't give me confidence.

However, I am sure you lot in CNN are so happy that you had the foresight to see that Obama was going to make a gaffe during his 7+ days abroad. Let's just do a re-cap shall we. The man was a bit tierd and speaking to a foreign government so they could understand him. Obama has done a brilliant job!!!! It is time to turn Washington over to the intellegent younger generation!!! Peace is patriotic and prosperous. Out with the old, very, very old and in with the new!!!! Obama is brilliant and his judgement and concerns for world peace are outstanding. It will bring prosperity back to America and NO MORE bomb, bomb, bomb and cowboy diplomacy. I'm so proud of Obama and have spent the last 8 years a bit ashamed of Bush. A bit!!! A whole lot ashamed!!!! America will be strong again. I'm also a former republican and in my 60's and I do know that their is a reason people retire in their 60's and McCain's lack of judgement, good sense and reality are the reason why!!!

Lucieann   July 23rd, 2008 4:35 pm ET

I just looked up about the Iran Sanctions Enabling Act of 2007, in which Obama worked with Rep. Barney Frank, chairman of the banking committee in the house and Sen. Dodd in the Senate, and the respective committees, so for Obama to refer to it as "his committee" is quite appropriate, even though he is not a regular member. It's not surprising that the desperation with in the McCain camp would stoop to ranting and raving about something so trivial. is this an attempt on McCain's part to try to draw attention away from the unfortunate flubs he has been making? CNN you don't need to get a respnse from the Obama camp, just because Mccain would like it, all you need do is go to Obama's Senate website..it's quite easy you know……

Robert   July 23rd, 2008 4:35 pm ET

CNN, please tell me that you haven't caved completely because McCain has his bloomers in a twist again! The NY Times rightly told him to come up with his own positive strategy rather than just bashing Obama's before asking them to print his editorial. Since then it seems that CNN is suddenly terrified to print anything positive about Obama or anything negative about McCain.

Where is your reporting on all of McCain's mistakes? Why do you ignore them? I see them occasionally brought out by other readers in the comments section, but not your reporters. I am smelling some cowardly reporting, because a political candidate who wants you to pander to him has accused you of - oh horror - media bias.

The problem is that King Obama stated, "which is my committee".

Factcheck:. Yes, the Awakening started in Sept. 2006, and the surge didn't start until Jan. 2007. During this time, US deaths each month continued to rise. Afterl the surge started in Jan. '07 that casualties started to drop. So the Awakening had no impact on casualties until the surge started. McCain got the timing wrong, but the main point was correct. See icasualty.org for monthly totals.

Ok so Barack said that in his campaign against Hillary but how many has he made comapered to John McCain in the primary? Didn't john just make a huge gaff yesterday which he finally owned? You still have to admitt that John is a much bigger gaffer than Barack Obama is!!! I think the reason he is is because he is such a liar that it's hard to keep facts straight..John McCain that is!!!

ch   July 23rd, 2008 4:10 pm ET

adm - I've been plenty tired plenty of days but have always known how many states there are.

Maybe he was tired all those days he sat in that church that looks like a three ring circus listening to Rev. Wright spew his hate?

Get real -

There he goes again. Taking credit for something he wasn't apart of.

bravos   July 23rd, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Obama has made the gaffe we all were expecting. He better keep his lies straight. This is big time politics not Chicago.

ch   July 23rd, 2008 4:08 pm ET

The 57 states one is still my favorite.

Also loved the super tacky "official" Obama seal which came and went witnin 24 hours!

God, do I miss Hillary - it was nice to have a sophisticated, knowledgeable, grown up in the race.

Now all we have left is these two bumbling, stumbling fools.

Fernando ATL   July 23rd, 2008 4:07 pm ET

mccainlies   July 23rd, 2008 4:07 pm ET

Hey Randy, you do know that Senator McCain has missed more votes than ANYONE in the senate this year don't you? Even less than a Senator who had a STROKE and was out for months. Maybe some of you Obama haters (or McCain supporters)should do a little research instead of parroting Limpballs or Hannity talking points of the day.

Mo in TO   July 23rd, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Whoops! … Need to hear some spin on this one, my man.

Still, McCain's goof-ups have been far more pronounced. Nevertheless, Obama needs to know he has to run a near perfect ship. Watch your mouth.

You Obama supporters are so funny!! You are ready to trust someone with no experience, elitist, egocentric, a cheat as well as a flip flop for President. I guess love is blind….

I know America is smarter than that and will wake up. Were there not enough controversies ??? Come on !! The let's forgive and forget attitude won't work.

MI for Obama   July 23rd, 2008 4:04 pm ET

oh goofs
everyone does it

Jon   July 23rd, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Hey John Powalski -

Obama didn't IMPLY that he was on the Banking Committee; he outright said, "which is my committee." I think you need a refresher course in reading comprehension.

JJ   July 23rd, 2008 4:03 pm ET

Ok so he goofed. Is this just as bad (or worse) than McCain's gaffes. I think not! I'm sure he will come out with an explanation soon.

Jon   July 23rd, 2008 4:01 pm ET

Oh come on, Obamabots. You guys blow up the blogs when McCain said 'Czechoslovakia,' but Obama calling the U.S. Senate Banking Committee "my committee" is no big deal?

All politicians misspeak, gaffe, lie, or whatever you want to call it, and Obamie is no different.

Carol-Illinois   July 23rd, 2008 4:01 pm ET

It seems that since some of Hillary crew has started working for Obama, he is starting to run a campaign like hers. The lies about his achievements, his dirty campaign style that is blamed on the other candidate, and making the facts fit his own truth. He would be wise to ride himself of those peope because he is not looking as good as he did before.

Chuck   July 23rd, 2008 4:01 pm ET

There is a difference between making a gaffe, having real knowledge of the issue and coming back to explain or correct it, and making gaffe after gaffe, not knowing whether you made one or not, or not being able to remember what you said in the first place, or having someone else correct you (i.e. Liberman). Now there is the differnece between an Obama gaffe and the McCain gaffes.

Q Pulpit   July 23rd, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Being tired is easily remedied. Obama should get a bit more rest.

Being senile is also easily remedied. McCain should get himself over to a REST HOME.

Jon   July 23rd, 2008 4:00 pm ET

How can you make so many simple mistakes like that?

This is why Obama cannot be trusted.

Brian   July 23rd, 2008 4:00 pm ET

Thank you, CNN. I am pleasantly surprised that you actually listened to my suggestion of headlines this morning for more balanced reporting.

Mike, TX   July 23rd, 2008 3:59 pm ET

Obama doesn't even know what comittees he is on in the Senate and he is the democratic nominee for president!? The joke continues.

JeffRob   July 23rd, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Yeah, okay, he messed up. And if it was a blatant lie to trump up his Senate work, that's just unfortunate and we all lose a little respect for the man.

But let's be crystal clear: McCain claiming that the surge "started" the Anbar Awakening is inarguably, undoubtedly, a bold-faced, blatant lie.

They simply don't compare. (The gaffes OR the candidates.)

maria   July 23rd, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Sounds like someone is sleep deprived. The rethugs trying to make something out of this is pure desperation. It is so obvious it is unbelievable. I think McCain's campaign does nothing all day but wait for anything they can pounce on to make Obama look bad. I guess if you've got nothing going for you, the only thing you can do is try to discredit your opponent.

SMITH IN FL   July 23rd, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Interesting all you are making excuses for NOBAMA………

Why not say he was wrong. Admitting you are wrong is not surrender. But as I expect you will not just like NOBAMA will not admit the surge worked.

He is a NOVELTY being used by the left to forward their cause. How sad.

Tim   July 23rd, 2008 3:57 pm ET

John Magoo doesn't even know what day it is. Old man yells at clouds and is totally wrong about the surge date and it's effect on the great awakening and this is the best that CNN can do???

so when Obama screws up its an "honest mistake." When McCain does hes just "old and stupid."

Sally   July 23rd, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Yes… this was an error, and should be clarified… but to all the nitwits who keep complaining about Obama's comment with reference to 57 states - it's been pointed out more than once that he was referring to 57 PRIMARY CONTESTS.

Both he and McCain misspeak, which is to be expected when going non-stop for 18+ hours a day, every day, on the campaign trail - who among us hasn't made a slip-up when weary?

Both Obama and McCain (and Clinton) partisans look ridiculous when falling all over themselves to make hay with every careless misstatement by their opponent.

Anonymous   July 23rd, 2008 3:56 pm ET

I think "we" meant the Senate. Why he called it "my committee," I don't knom.

Hispanos para Obama   July 23rd, 2008 3:56 pm ET

Southern view   July 23rd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

CNN why are you still moderating my comment which was very moderate and observant, indeed. Otherwise, I could have said that Obama lied to impress his audience.

Jan   July 23rd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

So, now, every time Obama makes a gaffe, it is McCain's fault? Will you lefties give it a break? You're just mad because CNN has the "audacity" to bring it out in the open. They have been pretty balanced–bringing out gaffes of both parties. Besides, how would it look if Fox "scooped" CNN?

Anita from Arizona   July 23rd, 2008 3:55 pm ET

It's ok to make mistakes everyone. Just hold their feet under the fire for it. Because Obama is the story now and not McCain, McCain's gaffes, unfortunately, go un-noticed. But, I will add, with all the media coverage Obama is getting, his gaffes are very few. Maybe making gaffes is the new plan for the McCain camp to get more press coverage. Just a thought….

Weepy   July 23rd, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Hello, is anybody home? Your CNN Comment Policy is a wobbly, means nothing policy. You allow so many inappropriate comments, makes one wonder what kind of people you have in charge. But I'm beginning to understand. We are not allowed to come down too hard on your guy OBAMA. Birds of a feather!!!!

Mike   July 23rd, 2008 3:54 pm ET

Hehe….Gaffe.

Seems like they called this a lie in the primaries

Obama '08   July 23rd, 2008 3:53 pm ET

This pales next to McCain's inability to locate Iraq's borders, confusion with Shi'ites and Sunnis, and the best one - the Anwar Awakening coming both before and after the Surge.

Tke919   July 23rd, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Oh dear god … are you kidding?

So Obama says "my committee" instead of "my provision" (which it was) and the right loses it's ever loving mind.

And, naturally, they bring up the 57 state comment — which Obama corrected ON THE SPOT and laughed about at the time.

Yet McCain can get the fundamental timeline of Iraq wrong and have CBS cover it up … can confuse Shia and Sunni several times over several days (and needed Lieberman to correct him on it) … can repeatedly refer to a country that no longer exists … can flip-flop (which the right sees as the most mortal of sins) nearly 70 TIMES … can continue to lie about the effects of drilling in ANWR and the gas tax … can lie about how many economists truly support his economic plan …

And all we hear from the media and those on the right are crickets.

The lack of self awareness some of you have is pathetic.

Gramma Faye /Idaho   July 23rd, 2008 3:52 pm ET

He is so delusional about his powers he thinks he runs "EVERYTHING" He could not even chair any meeting with his committee on Afghanistan. What a phony, self deluded , power hungry, lier, egotist. He sure is brain washing a lot of people.

Someone answer this for me:

Why would a PUMA vote for McCain? McCain is pretty far right on social issues and seems to be one of the few republicans trying to reduce spending. And why would a log cabin republican vote for Obama?

I hear this all of the time. I agree with Dave g, minneapolis, that Barr is the candidate for social liberty, reduced government and smart foreign policy…which is what most of my friends want. We're voting for Barr too.
His polling is shooting up faster than Obama's!!

CNN, where are the 100 McCain mistakes?

- Iraq/Pakistan border?
- Al Qaeda in Iran?
- Shia tribal leaders only helped the US after the surge?
- We are back to pre-surge troop levels?

Where are all these mistakes? They are way more serious :-(

Obama-Junkie, IL   July 23rd, 2008 3:48 pm ET

D&D   July 23rd, 2008 3:46 pm ET

As long as the gaffe is harmless, it's OK, because anyone whose every single movement and word are being followed and monitored would make a gaffe, just like we all gaffe on a daily basis…so CNN, let it go.

Doug, New Jersey   July 23rd, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Unlike the libs who foam at the mouth when McCain makes a mistake, as a conservative I realize that these guys have busy schedules and are bound to make a few mistakes. Obama knew he made a mistake here, just like the 57 states thing. Same as McCain with the Chec. and the Iraq-Pakistan border.

It would be nice if the left could at least mirror the right in honesty, and give up their severe hatrid of all who don't march lock step to their ideology. While almost all of the right will be understanding in an Obama mistake, almost the entire left in America will act like a dog with rabbies when McCain makes one. The American people should take note of these obvious differences. Most Americans are decent, honest, loving people so voting Democrat goes against their charecter and morals.

Peter (CA)   July 23rd, 2008 3:46 pm ET

Get off the "57 states" thing. It was a slip.

He had campaigned in 47 states and was saying he visited "Fifty..(pause)….seven states". When he realized he made a mistake he fixed it.

People are going to misspeak. Both Obama and McCain. It's just that McCain's slips seem so much more serious.

georgie   July 23rd, 2008 3:45 pm ET

to be, He doesn't know what committees he's on because he doesn't attend or hold any meetings. Thats why he has such a large base to tell him what to do and what to say. If I were them, I wouldn't want to take credit for what he thinks, if he does at all….or atleast for himself.

KP   July 23rd, 2008 3:45 pm ET

Lisa, Are you really sure Obama doesn't know how many states are in the Union? Other than the gaffe which I might add are made by both sides what evidence do you have? Is this the main issue you want us to focus on for the whole campaign? Why don't you admit that these candidates both make gaffes. You would to if you were under the pressure they are 24/7.

Get real!!!

NotFallingInLine.org   July 23rd, 2008 3:44 pm ET

When speaking to the American people, Obama's claimed credit for everything else that isn't his and for the products of the hard work of others for over a year now.

Why should he try to fool the Israeli media with the same nonsense?

Lisa, how can McCain claim to have any foreign policy know how when he doesn't know the existence or non-existence of other countries, misnames the enemies in Iraq/ Iran, creates his own map be allowing a border between two countries that have never bordered each other…. let's see… the list is too long but this gives you somewhere to start….

rexx   July 23rd, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Obama trying to claim something ANYTHING to get his some experience that he is obviously lacking. This was certainly NOT some "mistake". He was either telling an outright lie or he has no idea what committees he is on. Maybe next he will claim to have invented the internet.

StarDust   July 23rd, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Ok so he's confused what else is new, He generally stays confused and probably the reason he called it his committee is because he seems to be confused on whether he is the President all ready or if he is only a presumptive nominee.

Obama is in a foreign country. He clearly meant "We in the USA" and did not mean to imply that he was on that committee. You need to take into account that he was speaking to a foreign audience.

MikeH   July 23rd, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Roger from CA   July 23rd, 2008 3:36 pm ET

What are you complaining about "we"??? He wasn't referring to himself, but to the committee! Last time I checked, that was the English-language first-person-plural pronoun.

So, Obama isn't perfect, and he sometimes gets a little over-enthusiastic. But, as many have pointed out, this is nothing compared to the avalanche of gaffes and untruths from McCain and his camp. But I guess we Americans are just a bunch of "whiners."

LaShanda   July 23rd, 2008 3:33 pm ET

He is one of the few politicians that uses "we" because he considers his campaign EVERYONE's campaign. It's not all about him, it's about US. That's one of the reasons why I will support him. He made a gaffe, so what. McSame makes daily gaffes and the media has ignored him up until this week because of the CBS scandal.

You Obama supporters crack me up!

You have two choices: Either Obama mispoke and doesn't know what committees he's on….or….he lied!

Randy   July 23rd, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Perhaps if Senator Obama was doing his job as a Senator, you know show up for a meeting now and then, may be pull the lever on a vote, perhaps hold a meeting for the committee he is chair of (you know the one that is supposed to be watching over the war in Afghanistan, you know even if he just showed up once or twice since being elected he could at least remember which committee he is on.

This is like me being the director of Human Resources of a pharmaceutical company and then showing up one day and putting on a lab coat and trying to discover some new drugs because I had n't showed up at work for so long, I just forgot what my job is.

The ability to use the right words every time you speak should not be a requirement for the presidency. Ask George W. Bush.

By the way, he should thank CNN for reporting it as a "gaffe" and not calling it what it is . . . a boldface lie in order to gain some undeserved credibility.

He is always taking credit for someone elses work what else is new?

Obama's arrogance and ignorance are starting to break through his smoky rhetoric.

Capt. Smash, Salt Lake City, Utah   July 23rd, 2008 3:27 pm ET

Who in the world is surprised? His so-called 'change' is the same old pandering and lip-service that has been the democrat mantra forever. He reminds me of Kerry, say whatever the crowd in front of you wants to hear and don't worry about the truth because you will never have to face it anyway.

Susan   July 23rd, 2008 3:26 pm ET

This is nothing! At least he doesn't take credit for the "great" surge, the GI Bill, and that oil prices are dropping a little bit. Can't wait to hear the nonsensecial spin McLame and the Morons will put on this.

Chris   July 23rd, 2008 3:26 pm ET

He lied plain. Plain and simple. He knows what committee he is on. He has no experience and has not done anything noteworthy (and yes, this includes being a community "activist"). He has to lie in order to make himself sound credible.

There isn't much good so that is why he gets very little air time.

The truth will set you free!   July 23rd, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Wow, this man is either a liar or just very stupid! Most likely both. Does not even know that he does not belong to this committee….to much!

anything, anytime, anybody can count on pledges or support from this great man………(wink)

I can promise you anything you want to hear as well, vote me in VP this November………

James B. New Jersey   July 23rd, 2008 3:25 pm ET

This is the type of press Obama has gotten his entire campaign. Both the good and the bad but McCain gets only the good or no reporting at all.

Terry, Lakeland Florida   July 23rd, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Why is this news. Everyone knows Obama has been trying to take credit for everything that happens.

Debby, NJ   July 23rd, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Okayyyyy, and?
