Sen. John McCain's campaign is doing what it can to counter the publicity from Sen. Barack Obama's trip.

(CNN) — Sen. John McCain sharpened his attacks against Sen. Barack Obama on Thursday, saying he'd rather give a speech in Germany as president than as a presidential candidate.

Obama was in Berlin for the latest leg of an international trip intended to bolster his foreign policy credentials at home and set out his vision for a new era of transatlantic cooperation.

Watch: McCain says he'd prefer to speak in Germany as President

McCain was campaigning Thursday in Ohio, focusing on health care.

Speaking to reporters outside Schmidt's Restaurant and Banquet Haus, a German eatery in Columbus, Ohio, McCain responded to Obama's Berlin speech, which attracted large crowds at the Victory Column.

Watch: McCain discusses Obama's Berlin speech

"Well, I'd love to give a speech in Germany … a political speech or a speech that maybe the German people would be interested in," he said. "But I would much prefer to do it as president of the United States rather than as a candidate for the office of the presidency."

McCain will never speak to the German people as President because he will never be elected President. The republicans have screwed this country so badly that even the thought of that sends shivers down the spine!

Obama's speech, when boiled down, and all hype removed, amounted to:
"Ich bin ein Beginner."

Interesting how the ones who actually can vote for President, i.e. AMERICANS, are not fooled by the rock band tour. Not with the gap closing between the two.
Obama is caught up in his own fantasy and the three networks have joined in the delusion. None of them seem to realize that AMERICANS are a heckuva bit smarter than they are given credit.
I believe that AMERICAN CITIZENS (not illegals!) will see through the smoke and mirrors of both candidates and the political lunacy we'll be forced to endure for four more months and vote in the right person - now if we could only get Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck to agree. : )

Not surprised.   July 24th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Cmon mccain, you can't even draw a crowd to the dairy section in King Soupers - there's no way you could do an event like Obama.

Boy, McCain is sounding even more bitter than usual. I guess his plan to prod Obama into a trip to the middle east has backfired on him big time, huh. He just may have helped Obama put the last nail in the John McCains presidential campaign coffin.

Ok correct me if I'm wrong..But didn't McCain give a speech in Canada???

White/female/age 55/Texan   July 24th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Canadian black man for Obama.   July 24th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

I am sick and tire to read how McCain is a very good and Obama is not in blog like this.

Where are the facts or where you getting your facts from? I view youtube McCain flip flops and I see lots of inconsistency in McCain's own words.

Where is the facts that you are talking about that MCCain has for the country.
Just admit you hate Obama because either you hate black man or you are dying hearted Republican who will follow them to their graves. If what is happaning to the country is the way the country have to be ruled, because if you have conscience you realized that country need better leadership.

You guys a busy dividing us America, but the enemies group us together. just take your mind back to 9 11 does the terrorist separated white from black before they striked?

Jonny boy…didn't you make a pathetic speech here (Ottawa I believe) months ago which we didn't ask you to be here…ya just kinda showed up and started talkin about NAFTA!

You couldn't attract 200 people at your rallies, let alone 200 THOUSAND like Obama.

And personally, I'm gettin tired of people who are hatin on O because he draws big crowds. How is that the "media" pushing it? Did the media ask people to go there? Give me a break!

Why don't you actually look around you and realize there are millions of people who love and adore Obama, and you're part of the MINORITY - so get over yourselves.

Why Obama prefers to go abroad to have a speech instead having the town hall meeting with McCain. Voters in america need to know what Obama is going to help them with the struggling economy and high gas price.

Brian   July 24th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

McCain first attempts to discredit Obama for his lack of foreign policy experience. Then, he makes a trip abroad of his own and intimates that Obama should follow his lead. Now, as Obama captures the global stage, McCain blasts him for doing so. McCain so very much personifies the "Same Old Washington" that America has grown disinfranhised with. The sad part is that he doesn't seem to realize that he's his own worst enemy when he acts as he is now.

yankeegirl15   July 24th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

They'd LOVE McCain in Europe. NOT. He'll be riding around looking for Yugoslavvia and the USSR and the Berlin Wall. What fun. Maybe he'll look for Queen Elizabeth and be surprised how much she's aged. They can be OLD together. DeGaulle would LOVE to meet McCain. Oh my, and Kruzchev will be so EXCITED. Or did he want to meet Breznef? Tito might like to chat too. How about Franco? Papadapolis? Prince Rainer and Princess Grace ( his favorite movie star I bet). Do them all baby. Take your ouji board and have at it.

I agree with McCain.

If Obama is trying to win the race in the United States, then why is he campaigning in Germany? Seems to me like he is trying to win the vote of the world before he wins the U.S. vote….seems a bit backwards to me.

He should be trying to win over his people here in the U.S.

NY State of mind   July 24th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

At least, i guess, Germany will never have to hear him then. Lucky them

Joe   July 24th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Hey Lorraine, First off, Obama was not asked to speak in Germany it was his sole arrogant decision; it had nothing to do with the German government asking him and he was initially shot down by the Prime Minister as to where HE wanted to say the speech. Second, there was a concert going on before the big speech which is why there was a big crowd. Third, just because you can go to a foreign land and give a speech in front of a large crowd does not make you qualified to be President. The same goes for the trip to the Middle East. Just because he spends one day in Afghanistan, one day in Iraq and one day in Israel does not qualify him to be Commander in Chief. I went to Israel recently does that make me qualified? I don't think so. He may "look" Presidential but looks does not make one qualified!

Mark   July 24th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

ReaganDem84 - Maybe you don't know this, from whatever shallow existence your living, but Barack Obama is a US senator, and has every right to speak to foreign entities, its part of his job, and the committee he is on specifially deals with Foreign relations…better do your homework cheif…

I don't think, even as president, McCain could get even a quarter of the audience that came out for Obama. It's funny watching this jealous, he criticized Obama for not going overseas. Now Obama is overseas he criticizes Obama for being overseas. This isn't a political thing, people in other parts of the world by and large see Obama as the one who can make a difference. McCain comes across as confrontational and ignorant.

AdamT   July 24th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

McCain has integrity, how so? Obama's a blatant opportunist? If McCain would have something to say other that the same tired rhetoric"Obama has no experience, he cant understand , he should go to iraq and afghanistan" blah blah blah, someone may listen to him.

Denny Kazembe   July 24th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

My question to Senator McCain is, when you said, go abroad and see what our allies are all about because I have already been there several times, where did you actually want Obama to go?
I heard you are demanding debates with Obama. Can you exactly say what you actually want before the debates begin in case you want something else. Be careful what you wish for now.

Chris   July 24th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

I've noticed a trend here………obama supporters are extremely dumb and arrogant. Not a pretty combination.

Bill, Streamwood, IL   July 24th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

It is a sad commentary on the man when a U.S. Senator whines that he needs to be President of the United States to say something effective.

McCain, although I believe he is an honorable man, would not be able to accomplish the things that I believe Obama can. He is the right man, in the right place, at the right time, with the right skill set and approach to provide the kind of leadership the country and the world are craving.

McCain's jealousy is showing and he has to know that most people in Germany probably wouldn't come out to hear him anyway. He gives a lousy speech. I was always told "be careful of what you wish for, you just might get it".
McCain went on and on about Obama not going to Iraq and other places and now that he has done it, he doesn't like the outcome. McCain should have known better, but as usual he nor his campaign have a clue. He can always plan his own trip to the Middle East and Europe and then the American press can follow him around too.

McCain is obviously very jealous.

What does McCain expect, Obama is very well liked by a lot of people around the world.

McCain will NeVeR get this attention and it is because McCain and the RNC crawl out from under a rock, criticizes Obama, and then turn around and crawl right back under.

Cindy   July 24th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

I mean… what would you expect him to say? "I'm going to Germany, too! And I'm going to attract even bigger crowds! He can't get bigger crowds than me! Waaaa!"

At this rate, McCain's going to get a sympathy backlash. He wanted to show up Obama by exploiting his overseas experience. And now his challenge to Obama is biting him in the butt. What's done is done. Let's move on.

Ula Nejad- Sacramento Ca   July 24th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Obama's speech speaks volumes of the kind of president he wil be. He was accorded the presidential welcome in Iraq and came out of the meetings sealing the deal with Iraq on a timeline. He defended Israel June 4th, the next day says it was "poor phrasing". In Israel he decided to change his middle name to Jeremiah as he spoke to the Israelis and pledging his undying committment ardoned in the white yarmulke . He dines with Royals in Jordan where he chose to define success. He gets to Berlin and sounds repeats President George Bush second inaugural speech. Can the Senator be himself?

john   July 24th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Miko Kansas City   July 24th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

Terry   July 24th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

John McCain you shouldn't be so upset. You're the one who started the clock/timer showing the last time Barack went to Iraq. He only took your suggestion and expanded to a middle east / european trip.

SURGE, SURGE, SURGE   July 24th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

McCain stop whinning. The RNC had a clock ticking on its' website for how long Obama had visited Iraq. Now that he made a successful trip, you critcize and whine. Poor campaign strategy, I smell desperation. Maybe you should focus on your policy for America and stop attacking Obama. Americans are not voting for the person with the most attacks, and I personally don't know where you stand on issues like how to fix the economy, mortgage crisis, or your energy policy and health care. The only clear issue I understand is your war policy.

James Hussein, SC   July 24th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

One of the most important (if not the most important) speech given by an AMERICAN, for America, was given today; and this is how CNN shows respect to us all.

Once again CNN and Senator McCain show their lack of integrity and respect for the American citizens.

People make no sense   July 24th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Lee - it is obvious that your candidate is inspiring at all. The old 2000 McCain was a great man until he was swift boated by Bush and now look at him. What a shame for a man of his stature to be like this.

Richard   July 24th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

HA no one would show up to listen to your speech!

Mark   July 24th, 2008 4:19 pm ET

Lee I fail to see how anyone is BUYING the election, is your vote for sale???

No one's is, and its actually illegal to Buy one's vote…so the election is not for sale, nor is anyone buying the election…

If you like what you hear you will vote based on what you hear, not by how much someone spends….

I could spend one dollar, and my counterpart can spend millions, but if you don't like what one says, then your not going to vote for them..

So enough of the buying the election garbage…its not happening.

I however love what Barack stands for, and what he says, so regardless of what he spends, or how much or how little, he gets my vote.

He does not advertise much in Illinois, so he does not spend much here…he does not need to, we have seen, and heard him from day one… and he will have my vote

McCain could only dream about attracting that many to one of his speeches in our outside the US. Keep dreaming!

HDF   July 24th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Hopefully he will never get a chance as president so he might as well go and bore the Germans now with his platitudes.

Sammy   July 24th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

On the surface McCain has a good point. But considering our international relations are probably at the lowest they have ever been in this country, whether or not the rest of the world likes Obama is important to me as an American voter. Its going to be very difficult to repair 8 years of the Bush 'our way or the highway' approach.

On this issue we are better off knowing now whether not Europe (for example) is more likely to meet us halfway depending on who is president. If they like both candidates so be it and we can put this issue to bed. Obviously they like Obama in a big way. But I dont know about McCain… and I want to know.

Kiran   July 24th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

I don't know if McCain is being childish by whinning about the lack of press coverage he is getting or is in admiration of all the press coverage Obama is getting.
It just may be the latter b/c you gotta love a guy who EFFORTLESSY LOOKS, TALKS AND THINKS LIKE A LEADER OF THE FREE WORLD.

Donna from Colorado Springs   July 24th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

Of course McBush doesn't want to speak to the German people as a candidate for president. He'd be laughed out of the country as the idiotic buffoon that he is. All he can talk about is his precious surge working, degrade Obama and ridicule his ideas, and give credit to the idiot in Washington for the price of oil going down. We deserve something better than that. He's almost as embarrasing as Bush is.

Thank you Barack Obama for taking these first steps in extending good will to the nations of the world. The damage done by the current administration - the bullying, arrogant, elitist attitudes seemed insurmountable for too long and has left us increasingly isolated… Now our neighbors abroad are realizing - just as so many of us here at home have been able to - that there is hope.

I do recall Mccain recently giving a speech in Canada which was certainly a political sppech as he talked about NAFTA, etc. He was not President when he gave this speech. So where does Mccain draw the line of his speech in Canada versus Obama's in Germany? Do we note some jealousy here in the fact that McCain had 150 in attendance in Canada of which 125 were asleep whereas Obama had 200,000 in Germany.

McCain needs to show more personal respect. As Obama said, he disagrees with policies and opinions, but doesn't attack McCain personally. To say that Obama doesn't care if he wins the war, especially when he is out of the country, is going to the bottom of the barrel. Desperate? Show some respect.

McCain's good luck is that the mainstream media hasn't connected the dots that Phil Gramm wrote his economic policy AND Phil Gramm also is responsible for legislation that has caused increases in energy prices (enron loophole author) and the mortgage crisis (bank deregulation).

The economy is the number one issue, and McCain's policy maker is a huge part of the problems we face today.

and another thing, McCain's advisor criticizing Obama for calling himself a 'citizen of the world' is an idiot. We are all 'citizens of the world' and the fact that McCain's campaign would criticize him for saying that illustrates the way McCain thinks and is further proof that McCain would only alienate the USA further from the rest of the world.

Yes, I'm sure McCain would rather give a speech anywhere after he is president, but I pray he will never have that chance.
I cannot imagine any thinking person who would choose McCain over Obama when it comes to the "Commander in Chief" role. John McCain has been in the pocket of the Military-Industrial Complex ever since he got out of the POW Camp in Vietnam. He would exactly emulate George W. Bush, as he did in the decision to invade Iraq. The test for a future Commander in Chief is not whether or not the surge was successful. The test should be in the judgment shown or betrayed in the decision to send our brave young men and women to their deaths or maiming in an unnecessary war, to say nothing about bankrupting this country to satisfy a Presidential whim on false pretexts; when the real reason was the obscure chance that we might benefit from Iraq's oil..

Anissa   July 24th, 2008 4:10 pm ET

What about the speech McCain gave in Canada as a candidate for President?

"I would rather speak at a rally or a political gathering any place outside of the country after I am president of the United States," McCain told O'Donnell. "But that's a judgment that Sen. Obama and the American people will make."

"However, on June 20, McCain himself gave a speech in Canada — to the Economic Club of Canada — in which he applauded NAFTA's successes. An implicit message behind that speech was that Obama had been critical of the trade accord. Also, McCain's trip to Canada was paid for by the campaign."

McCain's advisors should be reminding him of these things, so that he doesn't make statements that are completely hypocritical.

I am certain now that McCain is clueless on international matters. I am sorry, but if you do not see yourself as a global citizen then you sir are ignorant to the changes that have occured. Mccain is right….and he takes this position as most humble people would. Who would be so arrogant as to change the presidential seal, refer to oneself as president during an election and hold political rallys in foreign countries as though you are a head of a nation when you're not. That measure of arrogance do not exist in a mind that is humble enough to know……in a general election, voters speaks and choose the president. Until then, a candidate is only a person seeking the job. I'm all about being humble….I'm all about Mccain. And btw, I'm really rooting for a Mccain - Jindal ticket :)
