(CNN) - Sen. Barack Obama on Thursday challenged people to look to Berlin as an example of what can be accomplished when nations come together to tackle global challenges.
"This city, of all cities, knows the dream of freedom. And you know that the only reason we stand here tonight is because men and women from both of our nations came together to work, and struggle, and sacrifice for that better life," he said before a massive crowd at Berlin's Victory Column.
Watch: Obama says the world needs to unite as one
Obama introduced himself as a "proud citizen of the United States and a fellow citizen of the world."
Thousands gathered for Obama's highly anticipated speech - an event the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee said was not a "political rally."

I can't believe it's taken this long for a presidential candidate to acknowledge that Americans need to think globally, remembering that all nationalism aside, citizens of all countries of the world need to work together to accomplish many of our goals and dreams. How could anyone even begin to compare a candidate of such magnitude with an old man who's mad about "pork barrel spending?"
I am speechless. What a wonderful call to global citizenry. I am insprired and so grateful to see our next leader inspiring the world.
Beautiful speech. Makes me a proud American to see my leader embraced abroad. OBAMA 2008!
I wonder if McCain would get that many people out??
No matter how the pundants and cynics will spin this....
OBama must be doing something right!!!!!!!!!!!!
hope is contagious....
Is there anything else to be said.
Wow.
Beyond words. I came to tears.
I think this speach shows exactly why Obama is getting so much attention. With the lack of leadership in the US, and even the world, it's nice to see someone who understands the importance of bringing us together. I think the US and the world needs someone to guide us to our fullest potential.
Obama truly is a once in a generation canidate. For those of you supporting McCain, let me ask you, could he have made this speach? No? Why not? I think we all know the answer to that.
people's champ!
Finally...a presidential candidate we can believe in! Barack Obama handles himself with grace and chooses his words carefully. What we wanted to see on this tour was whether his self-confidence carries well beyond our shores–and it does, beautifully. Maybe, soon, we will have a POTUS to be proud of once again!
What a joy to see.
True – Amazing
He will not win in November.
People do not like a man that thinks he is president before he is and people do not like a person who goes over seas to other countries and gives grand speaches as if he is the president before the USA population makes him president.
It makes him look like he is full of himself and that he actually speaks for the USA. When in fact he has not been given that privilage from the United States citizens yet
THIS IS WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS RIGHT NOW.
Wow, that was an incredible speech. If that doesn't convince the naysayers that he is presidential material, nothing will.
His speech was SO inspiring. He is bringing so much hope to the world.
DEMOCRATS UNITE!!!!
Report the truth will you please. Berliner's did not setup this venue for him...his speech comes after a concert which was already setup and most of people stayed to hear the speech, of course.
Don't you call this a "captive audience"?
I just watched the speech and spoke to my colleague who is in Berlin: – great speech with thousands in attendance, screaming Obama. The substance of the speech is great – humanity, love for America and, yes we can! I bet some talk show white dude republicans in black suits are going to spend their entire day trying to find something wrong with the speech. It does not matter becuase it was great, .....something mcsame can only dream of.
Two words: Absolutely fantastic.
Just read that all US government employees in Germany were banned from attending the even by the US government. This represents a brand new low for the Bush and his cronies. I guess they need to throw whatever lifeline they can to the gigantic mess that is the McCain campaign.
Bash on bash on McCain. The more you bash the worst you and
the Reps. look.
wow.. stunning speech. People everyone overseas loves the guy. Personality goes a long way in developing strong ties overseas.
Excellent speech! Obama believes in the good of man, that is very hard thing for many of us to do, seeing a cup half full instead of dried up and empty. Thank goodness for those people who also see the cup half full. YES WE CAN.
Obama has proven to the world that he is a very good speech reader, nothing more maybe less.
PERFECTION!
Incredible. Congratulations on nailing it, Senator!
