Sen. Barack Obama places a prayer note in the Western Wall.
Sen. Barack Obama places a prayer note in the Western Wall.

JERUSALEM (AP) — A written prayer that Barack Obama left this week in the cracks of the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site, asks God to guide him and guard his family, an Israeli newspaper reported Friday.

The paper's decision to make the note public drew fire. The rabbi in charge of the Western Wall, Shmuel Rabinovitz, said publishing the note intruded in Obama's relationship with God.

"The notes placed between the stones of the Western Wall are between a person and his maker. It is forbidden to read them or make any use of them," he told Army Radio. The publication "damages the Western Wall and damages the personal, deep part of every one of us that we keep to ourselves," he said.

Another Israeli paper, Yediot Ahronot, published an article Friday saying it had also obtained the note but decided not to publish it to respect Obama's privacy.

Many visitors to the 2,000-year-old Western Wall leave notes bearing requests and prayers.

Obama did so during a pre-dawn visit there Thursday, following a day spent meeting Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

Maariv published a photograph of the note, which it said had been removed from the wall by a student at a Jewish seminary immediately after Obama left.

Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs would neither confirm nor deny the note was Obama's.

The handwriting appeared to match a message Obama inscribed Wednesday in the guest book at Yad Vashem, Israel's official Holocaust memorial, and was written on stationery from the King David Hotel, where Obama stayed while in Israel.

The visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories was part of an international tour meant to shore up Obama' s foreign affairs credentials.

At the Western Wall, Obama was greeted by a crowd of curious onlookers and photographers. He donned a white skullcap, listened to a rabbi read a prayer, and inserted a folded white piece of paper between the stones. One hardline Israeli protester shouted, "Obama, Jerusalem is not for sale."

What an invasion of privacy.

I agree with the Rabbi, that was intended to remain between Barack and God. Shameful.

Sweet !!

JC   July 25th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

Shame on the Israeli media - what should have been a private message was made public. I guess the Israeli media is the same as the US media. Whatever will generate interest is newsworthy.

Fred   July 25th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Wow, as an Obama supporter, I wish he would have put on there, and please help me take florida

Glad to be an Independent   July 25th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Is anything private anymore. That is totally disrespectful. Every person that goes there and puts a written prayer in the cracks in the wall should have their private thoughts respected. Shame on the Israeli newspapers for printing Obama's thoughts. If fro one would not go there and put anything in the walls since my privacy would not be respected.

Bulldog   July 25th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

While it shouldn't have been made public, even by CNN, the contents are very commendable.

dan   July 25th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Disgusting that they would publish this. The prayers put into that wall are supposed to be sacred.

hillbilly,arkansas   July 25th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

religious fanatics are infecting the entire world.christian fascists, jewish phsychotics, and islamic suicide bombers.who gave any of you people a monopoly on GOD?to steal and publish someone's personal and private prayer to GOD wont look good on the other side.established and organized religions will be the death of this world, yet.i'll speak to GOD when i'm alone, thank you.

Anonymous   July 25th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

Let's hear what wrong with this.

Your Conscience   July 25th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

It is reprehensible that they should take that private prayer and publish it. In a word "Repugnant".

SteveD   July 25th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Please take the note, and the text of the note, off of your website.

Thank you.

Becky Sue   July 25th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Can this man have SOME PRIVACY? Geez

Derick from ATL   July 25th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

Lets see how the die-hard Obama-haters twist and turn this one too…"he's proud, he's this, he's that."

I used to not think this guy was the real deal, but i am beginning to sense he is genuine. This is a prayer we all should pray, a prayer even Jesus himself prayed, and yet, our christian republicans wouldnt dare say it meant Jesus thought he was proud. would we?

If you don't like Obama, that's fine. Not everyone should like him, because this is democracy. Bbut please be real with why you don't like him.

Joycelyn   July 25th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

CNN you should not have published this as it's between a person's prayer and God. I got to say there should be a line when it comes to matters like this. It is sad that an individuals prayer has to be made public just because he is a presidential candidate regardless whether its Obama or McCain.

Obama 08

Shane   July 25th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

SAD THAT THEY PUBLISHED IT, IT IS A NICE PRAYER. IT SHOULD OF BEEN PRIVATE. VERY NICE OBAMA.

Another political stunt to show he"s a Christian. Where is Obamas spiritual mentor Rev. Wright these days did the Democrats put a muzzle on him.

Enlightened Voter   July 25th, 2008 1:56 pm ET

This is beautiful! He is a good, honest, christian man unlike mccain who doesn't even believe in God. In money he trusts.

Your Conscience   July 25th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

Is this the Israel way of developing trust or forge a new relationship? Disgusting violation of trust.

SDW   July 25th, 2008 1:57 pm ET

The act of publishing Mr. Obama's personal prayer to his Maker is just SHAMEFUL! How dare they? What an intrusion into his privacy! Next, I guess you will see the Priests running out of the confession booths telling everybody about your own very personal confession! These people need to be punished! This act was lower than low!

Whether he becomes president or not that is a wonderful prayer, May God bless you Obama.

DJ, LA, CA   July 25th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

Obviously the Israeli protester has no concept of what it takes for peace.
Israel needs to step up and make concessions if they ever want to have peace with the Palestinians. Otherwise they will be at war forever.

Winston   July 25th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

May God bless, keep, and cover you Barack.

You are a good man.

John, Nebraska   July 25th, 2008 1:59 pm ET

In other words, one of Obama's campaign team promptly handed the note to a reporter.

Good Lord, will this guy stop at anything for publicity???

Nia Hussein- Phoenix, AZ   July 25th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

The fact that someone would steal a persons sacred prayer for gain is sick an disgusting. God doesn't like ugly and that person will be delt with. however, Obama's prayer was heard a million times over.

Frank   July 25th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

While Obama's prayer certainly reflects well on him, it is VERY unfortunate that someone chose to give it to a newspaper.

The only thing worse would be our right-wingers using the occasion to question Obama's faith the way they have questioned his patriotism.

So how long do you think that will take?

DEMOCRAT   July 25th, 2008 2:00 pm ET

God Bless you Obama, I pray for you everyday too… Not only that you become President but also that the Hatred from the so called christians on the right does not get to you.

Franky   July 25th, 2008 2:01 pm ET

I gotta say, that's a nice gesture. And this notion that is drawing fire because it doesn't "protect" Obama from God's relationshiop is a bit too much. God is here to protect us from our fears, not to abandone us…

Tolu   July 25th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

Needless to say, and intimate communication like this should never have been published. Quite outrageous. Surely everything's not for reporting!

P, CA   July 25th, 2008 2:02 pm ET

Sounds like something that would've happened under McCarthy. When will this stop? Honestly, I'm am NOT religious at all, but I feel like this is a violation of the man's personal spirituality. What's next? Bugging Obama's confessional to find out that he stole a grape to taste at a supermarket?

I seriously seriously seriously hope that the supporters (esp. the evangelical ones) of McCain on this blog will denounce this as an invasion of privacy. Only the most rabid supporters (who still think he's Muslim) will condone this outrage.

Willow, from Iowa   July 25th, 2008 2:04 pm ET

In this modern age, it seems that we can have no confidentiality, no privacy, even with our God. That letter, whether it was Obama's or someone else's, should be put back, and left alone.

Jay in Arkansas   July 25th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

This is so sad…the media is a real joke. You all have gone overboard.

WallyWutMD   July 25th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Who paid that student to steal that letter? I want to know who is behind this.

JMcM   July 25th, 2008 2:05 pm ET

Like Obama didn't suspect this would happen when he wrote that.

Yeah, whatever.

TheTruthHurts   July 25th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

Shame on you CNN.

matt   July 25th, 2008 2:06 pm ET

CNN, just because they published it doesn't mean you have to. You could take this story down if you wanted to, since you know its an invasion of privacy, but alas, you wont. Congrats

A prayer is between a person and God and they owe Barak an apology . They also need to ask God for forgiveness.

Heidi   July 25th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Jack, before you start hating on Obama let me ask how you pray. Do you ask for forgiveness for yourself, do you ask for guidance, do you ask for protection from the unknown, do you ask for humility? I bet you do as does anyone else who prays. So I guess you should just lay off especially when it comes between a man and his personal prayers to God.

unity   July 25th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

Obama's privacy should've been respected.

Peggy - TX   July 25th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Lisa, Jack, The depths of your depravity on criticizing this prayer is indicates two highly disturbed minds. Go get a beer and chill a little. I know it is hard, when the candidate that embodies your values is so lame as McCain, but life is just too short to spend it intensely angry.

I'm sure the PUMA freaks and other blind six-year-old haters will be right out here on the playground, holding the phrase "Forgive me my sins" against him and saying the implication that he has ever even committed any sin whatsoever is reason enough not to vote for him. As if a) he is running against Jesus, and b) they themselves are completely sinless.

Tim   July 25th, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Senator Obama, please accept our apology. I agree with Steve. CNN take this note off your website now!!! This is a disgrace against God, Senator Obama and Israel! The very fact you would put it on you website proves you have no respect and there is nothing that is considered sacred.

CNN you should be ashamed of yourselves. Seriously, one for publishing a prayer between a man and his Father, and then referring to the yarmulke as a skullcap as if he were playing basketball in the Bronx. What next? Between this article, Campbell Brown, and Lanny Davis I have had enough of your egregious attempts at reporting the news. Grow up!!!!

OMG, So His Prayer Was Stolen?   July 25th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

OMG–how awful. I"ve never seen anything like this and the Iraelis should be ashamed of themselves. I would boycott leaving any prayer at that wall. And Barack took the wall and his prayer seriously. How rude, and indecent and crude and low down.

Awful people.

If I were Barack I would NEVER go back there. What a crappy thing to do. Awful, awful–no decency.

Tim   July 25th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Duh, what's he going to put in a prayer to God, other than something nice. Obama is God, very funny. Maybe he has alzheimer's so he needs to write himself a note to remind himself about what he is asking himself for. Did he end the note, Praise be to Me?

HF in CA   July 25th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

OBAMA……….08

Name   July 25th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

They should not have published this private paryer with his Creator. Having seen it, it shows a truly humble purposeful and thoughtfoul position. Similar to the Serenity Prayer.

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

Very disturbing that someone took it (especially a seminary student! can that be true?) and published it. But I have to say, beautiful prayer. To guard against pride and despair. There's a lot of power in that. A very aware man.

Thieves, All Of Them   July 25th, 2008 2:19 pm ET

How are we going to have good people like Barack Obama want to be in politics if we treat them like this? If I were as smart and had his Harvard law degree, I wouldn't want to put up with this kind of public junk. We'll only get stupid sons of wealthy families to do this for their corporate friends/wives.

ledia   July 25th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

I think Obama considered the fact this might happen before he wrote his note. That is why it is pretty general and doesn't have many private details. I think the note is very unselfish and absolutely commandable. He is asking God for guidance to become an instrument of his work without being proud. What a prayer!
Obama 08.

Frank   July 25th, 2008 2:20 pm ET

I am not a supporter of Obama, but I find what the Israeli newspaper did as dispicable! This is a time that Israeli government should show that it has some morale and publicly go after the newspaper that published this very private note! I think if they don't do such a thing, we (including us Jews) need to think hard about the level of morality, or lack there of, in Israel!!!! It is a shame!

Independent-woman-4-Obama   July 25th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

OH MY GOODNESS…….. SOME OF THE HATEFUL COMMENTS. 'I KNEW HE THOUGHT HE WAS THE MESSIAH' ! PLEASE DON'T BE SO PETTY AND DISRESPECTFUL TO OUR MESSIAH, JESUS CHRIST!!

When Sen. Obama decided to go on this trip, I knew the hate-and-fear-mongers would be attacking but its even worse than I imagined!

Its clear that the 'far-right' has nothing other than be their usual mean selves. Shame on you……….. and you call yourselves Christians!

Jesus greatest commandment is being thrashed but its okay right??? Shame on you!

American by choice   July 25th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Shame on the Isreali media for this crap! CNN shouldn't have published it either.

RickytheGriff   July 25th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

As a Jew I find this very disrespectful. Those words are between Obama and G-d.

Obama 2008.

At least he says Prayers to Jesus   July 25th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

This should confirm any doubts he is a christian, but totally disrespectful. I am saddened CNN posted this! SHAME

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   July 25th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Lisa, I thought you might be a radicalized Christian, but obviously you're not as you clearly don't understand Ephesians 4:29 in your comment at 1:47.

This was clearly wrong, especially if other notes written aren't published.
But I will say this since it was published.
This guy has a genuine relationship with GOD.
He firsts asks for protection for the Almighty.
He then acknowledges his sins and asks for forgiveness.
He then asks for guidance.
Lastly, he as Jesus did during his prayer on the Mount of Olives where in Luke 22:42 says "God, not my will, but thy will."

Obama is not the Messiah, anyone who suggests otherwise is blasphemous. He does, however, seemed to be guided by God. I hope my evangelical friends see this and understand that fact.

Daniel   July 25th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

No privacy for this man, and some how he will be blamed for this as well.

Tim, Illinois ex-republican   July 25th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Give him some privacy!!

Are you Republican First? or American First?

Obama surely is not the Messiah, but I can see how Jesus was crucified not matter how much good he did.

Are you going to look at all the information and make your own decision, or do what your friend does.

mama4obama   July 25th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Beautiful prayer that we never should have seen. God Bless Obama and his family.

ILUVOBAMA   July 25th, 2008 2:31 pm ET

Geezzz this is so wrong… very bothersome…

kathryn   July 25th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

I too think that they have taken things too far. It was a private prayer.

zolesh   July 25th, 2008 2:32 pm ET

This is all about the conspiracy to bring Obama down.
God is with you Obama, don't despair.Continue to be positive and have good intentions and you will be rewarded.

Don't stoop low like your opponent has been doing all along.

The American people are smart and discerning.

Guess What?   July 25th, 2008 2:33 pm ET

There is no god. At least this way someone reads it.

Brandon from WI   July 25th, 2008 2:33 pm ET

The prayer was personal and should never have been published. However, that being said it was touching and shows how Obama FIRST thought of his family. Then he asked GOD to help make him a better person. This is something I think all of us should try to do whether we are near a Western Wall or not.

Another grumpy old white woman for Obama   July 25th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Shame on that student and shame on the Israeli press but ,most of all, Shame on CNN!
I want to see an apology to Sen. Obama. And I want this taken off your site!

sdl   July 25th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Sadly, it was one of my first thoughts when I saw the picture of Obama placing a prayer there:
Someone in or for the press is going to remove it and publicize what it said.
Too bad I was right in my instincts.

While the sentiment is fine, and even reflects well on him…

The violation of the Wall, tradition, and personal privacy is horrific.
And I speak as a non-religious person; the feelings of religious persons must be VERY upset!

Matthew   July 25th, 2008 2:34 pm ET

Purposely leaked by the campaign to gain favor from evangelicals. It's disgusting how low Obama and his people will go.

Ogo   July 25th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

It is shameful that this prayer was published. It is simple and interestingly had nothing to say about his hopes to be president. I think that is laudable. Maybe Obama is not as selfish as McCain wants people to believe he is.

Praetorian, Fort Myers   July 25th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

It will make a great collectable some day.

But it's gross to steal a man's personal message to God. Whoever ripped this out of the wall: I hope the fleas of a thousand camels infest your genitalia.

Mike Dallas   July 25th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

Quick, McCrypt, an attack photo op, in Barnes and Nobles religious section in which you state "See I told you he was arrogant"!

If McCrypt had left a prayer that was later disclosed, it would at least prove his motor skills, otherwise, how would he have been able to hit the ink well with the quill pen?

Matt, Manchester, CT   July 25th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

Hey Obama, make sure you cite Saint Francis w/ that last line of your prayer!!!

Truth75   July 25th, 2008 2:36 pm ET

How sad! The media has stepped to another low. Very shameful indeed, shameful for CNN to publish this also. You guys are doing a fabulous job CNN…..idiots!

Aaron   July 25th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

I am not an Obama supporter at all, but I agree that this is a terrible invasion against his privacy and second as a Christian, if half of what Obama wrote was truly from his heart than I have much greater respect for the man, it was an unselfish prayer and I think showed a great deal of character.

Conservative going Democrat this time   July 25th, 2008 2:37 pm ET

Truly disgusting. What is worst is that his prayer was taken from the site. Cnn please take this off your website.

CNNwhy?   July 25th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

So whats your justification for publishing the prayer CNN?

Randy   July 25th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

It isn't right that they published this…….

But I am quite sure this was arranged by the campaign simply for more publicity.

I am sure Obama is SHOCKED AND APPALLED….and yet so greatful that we all get to see him pray for wisdom.

Jenny, Rio Vista, CA   July 25th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Whoever stole that note should be punished. Any press, Israeli, American, British, or whomever that prints the prayer (That includes you CNN) should be ashamed.

Any negative remarks about the prayer is also shameless. I don't care if you are democrat or republican, or neither….. this has gone too far.

Cal   July 25th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Question for CNN: IF a robber left the bank vault doors open after a robbery, does it make me, a bystander, not guilty to walk in there and take whats left of the heist?

NY State of mind   July 25th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

This is the evil you McCain supports represent. PUMA's you should be ashamed and christain's, you will get pleanty more of this from this party. Do not be dumb enough not to know this was done by a McCain flunky. The people of that country would not of touched it. Scum of the earth we will end your time.

canadiana   July 25th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Even though it was supposed to be private, between Obama and the Al Mighty. I am glad it is published so that all those who accused him of being a muslim, know that obama did not pray in the name of Ala, or mohammed. Get your facts straight before you use the media to score polictial points

Illinois registered voter   July 25th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Even a supposed private prayer that he obviously knew would be collected and become fodder for his campaign! Too bad that humility was not evidenced in the coffee shops of Springfield, IL. But humility with righteous furvor always makes a good campaign, doesn't it?

Caroline   July 25th, 2008 2:39 pm ET

Wow. I'm not an Obama supporter, but this was just disrespectful. It was a private moment, and they intruded on it. I hope God does bless his family, and the fact that he asked God to guard against pride speaks well about him. I don't agree with him on many issues, but I'm starting to realize that he is a good person who loves his family and America very very much. This newspaper could learn a thing or two.

Michael   July 25th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

CNN, you should be ashamed of this. This is a private note between Obama and God and you have crossed the line in putting this on this blog. As for those who wish to critize Obama for this note, you need a reality check, you know who you are. CNN PULL THIS AND PULL IT NOW, THIS IS WRONG AND YOU KNOW IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what a humble and sweet prayer. we should all aspire to such simple grace. but what a sad sign of the times that something so private has been put in front of millions of sets of eyes.

Joe   July 25th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

bah, he probably knew it was going to be read anyway, so he made it sound as public-friendly as possible. He's not a fool you know.

Northern Michigan   July 25th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

AN ABOMINATION…. No matter who you support politically, this is a complete violation of sacred space.

ang/Houston   July 25th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

No…it wasn't right….but now, let us all who are believers stand in agreement with Barack and pray this over him and his family. Power and strength is in numbers. We will quadruple the power and covering over him.

B   July 25th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

The words are genuinely comforting and appealing. I'm a Republican who won't be voting for Obama, but I respect his sincerity.

And I agree that it's shameful to publish this sort of thing in a newspaper…is nothing sacred anymore?

lisa M   July 25th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

To those who published the contents of Senator Obama's prayer. . .Don't you think that if he wanted it published he would have sent it to you?

Please try to understand that what was done was wrong and that each time it is published again, it is wrong.

This was very disrespectful

leftyloosey   July 25th, 2008 2:46 pm ET

Progressives don't believe in God. Who is Obama praying to? The same Lord Bush bows too??

Uff…idiots.

Latinos for Obama   July 25th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Great prayer……though disrespectful for publishing it, this prayer reflects Obama as a man of faith.

Some of the Obama haters in these post really need to be included in this prayer. They are people with so much hate which only goes to show how they lack God in their life.

Tony   July 25th, 2008 3:34 pm ET

NICE!

Take that Johnny McBush! :)

That is really disrespectful, that was supposed to be private. I am even more disgusted because they reposted it on here for everyone to read and critize, why? So some of you very ignorant people don't have the decency not to. (as with the "Messiah" comment). Some of you "Christian" PUMA people or McCain people really need to get a grip. Like or dislike its all completely ignorant to give negative commentary on someone's violated private prayer. I guess decency isn't a common trait among the blogs.

Veteran for McCain   July 25th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

The fact that he left a note in a stone, is in fact, public and no longer private; thank God, he didn't ask to be President!!!

I hope you guys expose this imposter before it is too late. Is it just me or do others get the feeling of some sinister undertones when listening to him speak.

Lady Jane   July 25th, 2008 3:55 pm ET

CNN - this is totally disrespecful. Please take it down. Is nothing sacred in this 24/7 news cycle? C'mon.

You people (cable news folks) really would eat your young, wouldn't you?

Phil   July 25th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Lisa, your ignorance show every time you open you mouth.

Natasha   July 25th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

Wow, this is taking Obama-mania too far. I could look past news outlets publishing his workout routine, how much he sweats, and other such nonsense, but to pry into his personal life to this extent? That is absolutely unfortunate and reprehensible.

Michael in ATX   July 25th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

That is Obama's personal communication with God. It is meant to be between God and himself. The fact that you are propagating such an intimate note makes you no better than the Isreali newspaper that published it to begin with.

Take the note down now CNN! It is shameful.

It was a very humble and serene prayer.

Mike, Syracuse, NY   July 25th, 2008 3:58 pm ET

Sheer evil and vile Probably wont get posted just had to say it

OBAMA WINS GEORGIA   July 25th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

SHAME ON THE MEDIA IN ISRAEL AS WELL AS CNN FOR MAKING THE NOTE PUBLIC. EVEN FOX NEWS REFUSED TO REPORT ON WHAT THE NOTE SAID. NO WEAPONS FORMED AGAINST OBAMA SHALL PROSPER

Watermann   July 25th, 2008 4:00 pm ET

It clearly shows the character of the media and they come along with that. Not surprising the comment by "Obama is God" quote - Why should he write a note to himself - unquote and that one from LIsa. The right of the free speech is not relevant here. What bothers me is that CNN posts every BS comment.

Dennis in MN   July 25th, 2008 4:01 pm ET

What a schmucky thing to do. And publishing it here doesn't help either.

robin   July 25th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

A prayer is usually a private conversation between yourself and God. How sad that it is now out in the public for all the haters to tear into.

Privacy?   July 25th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

Its was definitely wrong of whoever took the note, and wrong to publish it.

But I'm sure he was aware when he put it there that there was a pretty good chance it would be taken out .Not that it justifies anyone taking out his note.

Texas Trail Dog!   July 25th, 2008 4:02 pm ET

This is the lowest of low. Presidential candidate or not, this was a private issue between Obama and God. I am deeply saddened.
CNN show some respect and remove the note from your site!

Leroy   July 25th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

Unbelievable!

Prayers are the most personal, private conversations there are.

I find this completely tasteless and disrespectful.

Barry IL   July 25th, 2008 4:04 pm ET

Itt's shameful, indeed. Some individuals publish anything as long as it sells these days. They should at least consult the Rabbi before they did. Prayers at the Western Wall are secrets, between man and God.

Prayers are put into the wall foe privacy and custom. It was a private prayer between Obama and God. Shame on whoever gave this to CNN, and double shame on CNN for printing it. This is horrific and below any natural conscience.

Cheryl Fontaine   July 25th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

Publishing this prayer in hopes of gaining - what? Fame, publicity, money?

This is a gross invasion of Senator Obama's privacy - I spit on you for publishing it and I will make note of who you are and deride you every chance I get.

have you know shame media?

those prayers are meant to be private

Pink Elephant   July 25th, 2008 4:05 pm ET

It was a campaign strategy. They wanted people to find the note…probably hired someone to uncover it. He's trying to improve his standing with Christian conservatives.

D R   July 25th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

CNN you really need at the way you cover these stories. This was an absolute crime against god! Prayers are private! Period! And the way CNN is working overtime to diminish the obvious love that Europe is showing Obama is repulsive.

Big Bill from Brooklyn   July 25th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

I rather doubt that a man running for the Presidency of the United States really thought that his note would remain private. If he had, I suspect he would have asked the Lord to bless Mr. or Ms. X, his vice presidential running mate, by name. Grow up, folks, grow up.

ml   July 25th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

Ben in San Diego   July 25th, 2008 4:06 pm ET

jack debrot, new york, new york   July 25th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

what a phony and what dummies the obama supporters are. obviously obama wrote the prayer knowing it would be published.

Lucinda   July 25th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

You shouldn't publish it, either. Even a presidential candidate should have some right to privacy, and to reveal a person's personal prayer's shows a lack of decency.

Sean   July 25th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

Apparently some people "Lisa" and "Jack" seem to be the same person. This should not have been published, and is a very humbling prayer - every leader should be so humble to understand that their protect, ability to lead, and guidance comes from above. It is the essence of faith.

Justin (ny)   July 25th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

CNN: You are disgusting to even decide to put this note up. You should know better than to add fuel to what we all know is a delicate matter. All the Obama haters will defintely turn this around. How disappointed I am of you and all the media that decides to post this note or air it. Our freedom and privacy is being distorted by the republicans and its followers. I know some of you don't like Sen. Obama but how dare they use this against him!

OregonMom   July 25th, 2008 4:08 pm ET

The Israeli newspaper made the shameful mistake of publishing this. Why does the US media need to even more shamefully re-publish it. This article s/b removed. An individual's prayer to God is PERSONAL and PRIVATE. No one has a right to voyeurism in this matter who the human being involved is.

Shannon in California   July 25th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Very tacky, I guess a guy can't even pray a private prayer without the world finding out about it. Those of you who so stubbornly still believe he is a muslim please take note, there is no mention of alah ( or whomever the muslims pray to) in the prayer. He is clearly a Christian.

The Truth   July 25th, 2008 4:09 pm ET

Anil   July 25th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

CNN,
Wow - you guys are terrific. You managed to make yourself sound completely guilt-free while pointing a wagging finger at the Israeli media, for essentially doing the same thing.

Now that your daily quota for web visits are complete, take the image and it's contents down. It was a private note - as private as someone's diary.
