CNN's Candy Crowley sat down with Obama Friday in Berlin.
CNN's Candy Crowley sat down with Obama Friday in Berlin.

BERLIN, GERMANY (CNN) - America’s allies in Europe are crucial to the success of anti-terror efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq and in helping solve economic problems at home, Sen. Barack Obama told CNN on Friday.

“Part of getting that right is having the Europeans engaged and involved in this same battle that we’re involved with,” the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee told CNN’s Candy Crowley in Berlin, Germany, on Friday where he had addressed an estimated crowd of 200,000 a day earlier.

Asked what message his traveling abroad three months before the election sent to Americans, Obama said getting commitments from the United States’ partners would help address some of the domestic issues Americans are facing.

Watch: CNN's Candy Crowley asks Obama: Why are we sitting in Berlin?

“If we have more NATO troops in Afghanistan, then that's potentially fewer American troops over the long term,” he said, “which means we're spending fewer billions of dollars, which means we can invest those billions of dollars in making sure we're providing tax cuts to middle-class families who are struggling with higher gas prices … that will have an impact on our economy.”

Obama left for Paris later Friday for a visit with French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The Illinois Democrat is in the middle of a multi-nation tour in an effort to boost his foreign policy credentials.

Obama, accompanied by fellow Sens. Jack Reed, D-Rhode Island, and Chuck Hagel, R-Nebraska, has visited Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq, Jordan, Israel and the West Bank, and Germany. He will visit Great Britain after his meeting with Sarkozy.

The meetings are meant “to send the message that Americans want to partner with these countries in order for us to be successful, and also to relieve some of the burden on our fighting men and women in Afghanistan and Iraq,” Obama said.

Asked if he saw his trip as some sort of rebuke against President Bush's foreign policy, Obama said that was not his intention.

"You know – that is not my job on this trip, I think that if you look at how we have tried
to conduct this trip – that I have tried to abide by a rule that has been historically I think very important – which is that whatever political differences that we have – we have one government at a time and that when public officials like myself who are not the president, travel overseas, that we are not in the business of spending all time second guessing our president," he said.

Tune in for the full interview on “The Situation Room” at 4 p.m. ET Friday.

First McCain criticizes Barack for not having enough 'world' experience. Then Barack takes time out of his schedule and goes to all the spots where there are problems that he should see and McCain criticizes him for doing that. He gets along with the military they get mad at that. Then Europe and goes wild for Obama(all those 200,000 people had nothing better to do in Berlin) and the McCain camp has more jealousy fits because no one did that for McCain.

All McCain's campaign can do is complain because that at least keeps their antiquated candidate in the news.
Until the next whine
It's Obama in 08!

Cricket   July 25th, 2008 10:20 am ET

RE: rock concerts-how many have you attended where the crowd was waving American flags?? DUH.
Sen. Obama has done an excellent job working to restore the image of our country that GWB and his cronies have destroyed over the last 7 yrs. Now if the sore HRC losers and those that seem to admire warmongers will stop "pouting" and do some serious listening, research, and THINKING, maybe all his efforts will not be in vain.
Young people, we oldsters, over 60, are depending on you-don't let us down. I continue to hear the pundits say "as a rule young people don't show up to vote"- PLEASE PROVE THEM WRONG THIS TIME!!!!

Southern white granny rooting for OBAMA!!

Mcbush thought he was setting a trap for Obama by forcing him to visit Iraq. But he realized that he has fallen into his own very net, he cried foul play by the media. And what do you know; the media is stupid enough to fall for it. The truth of the matter is that Obama is advocating world peace, unity and the need to turn away from the old politics that creates more enemies than friends (that’s why the world is so enthuse about his candidacy). On the other hand, Mcbush is always talking about war, war, and bomb, bomb Iran. And he wonder why the media is not given him enough coverage. People are tired of war Mcbush; they want peace, love and justice for all. This is a new era, with new challenges that demands different approach as the one Obama offers.

Farnk, Las Vegas   July 25th, 2008 10:19 am ET

The McSame camp is complaining about the trip that they insisted on Obama take. The trip has shown that Obama is indeed ready to take office, to be Commander In Chief, to be the world leader America has lacked for 8 years. So now that the McSame camp challenge has been met, they're whining. I think they can see the light, when McSame went overseas and gave talks, he couldn't draw 200 people, much less 200,000!

EMJ   July 25th, 2008 10:19 am ET

I love it when I read some dofus comment that 200,000 people really went to Obama's speech because two bands were playing before that. What world do you live in? Now if U2 or Pearl Jam, or a world famous band or singer was entertaining before the speech I could see several thousands being there just for the free concert but that was not the case out west here nor in Europe. Nice try, please insert your next false negative slam.

mnjack   July 25th, 2008 10:19 am ET

Why is it when you read CBS comments, you get both side of the coin from the comments.
CNN appears to moniter the comments and only put on the bias replys. Yeah Obama
BS- there are many of us who think his pretty speeches are just a bunch of Political huey.
He will tell us what he thinks we want to hear and then vote or do what ever he feels like, regardless of his promises.
BS
BS\BS

JimBlanco   July 25th, 2008 10:19 am ET

Obama is a compulsive liar and his comments cannot be taken seriously.

Lie: Obama says "There was something stirring across the country because of what happened in Selma, Alabama, because some folks are willing to march across a bridge. So they got together and Barack Obama Jr. was born. So don't tell me I don't have a claim on Selma, Alabama. Don't tell me I’m not coming home to Selma, Alabama."

Fact: The Selma march occurred in March, 1965... Obama was born in August of 1961.

Example: Obama referred to the Banking Subcommittee as "my committee",

Fact: He's not even on the Banking Subcommittee.

Need I continue?

portateck   July 25th, 2008 10:19 am ET

What an ego. all talk no substance.

Jim Beam   July 25th, 2008 10:19 am ET

Yeah, Obama did this during a free concert. And all those waving US flags were t-shirts for the bands!

bohica   July 25th, 2008 10:19 am ET

The speech had been intended less for the crowds gathered in Berlin's Tiergarten park than for "hesitant white voters in Ohio and Pennsylvania, Colorado and Virginia" Obama has proved himself to be a clever tactician, capable of shifting positions to suit his audience.
"He wants to convince (voters) that the world will also listen to a black president... And there's one other thing one shouldn't forget when talking about Obama: He easily reworks even positions that have been written in stone and adjusts to new requirements." Translated, you can't believe a thing this guys says.

Florida   July 25th, 2008 10:19 am ET

Let him get all the attention he wants.... he only has 100 days left before he's out of the spotlight!

Manuel Jaramillo   July 25th, 2008 10:19 am ET

Like Pelosi, Obama has overstepped his line of authority and attempting to usurp the President's authority.

I've NEVER been a Bush fan but Obama's actions are totally unacceptable.

Obama THINKS this one or two week tour is going to legitimize his foreign policy "experience". It's only shown his arrogance and disrespect for the electoral process and the United States.

During Obama's tenure as a Senator, he has NEVER gone overseas to participate in any legitimate Senatorial activity. Even now, and as was pointed out, he skipped out on the NATO meetings where he may have been able to use some influence to gain immediate help. That would have shown his leadership skills but he chose not to do so.

This just reinforced McCain's comments that Obama puts his personal needs before our country's needs. Such behavior has already gotten us into enough problems we don't need more of it.

Best Regards

Voter   July 25th, 2008 10:19 am ET

Outrageous – who does Obama think he is?

His arrogance knows no bounds. I think this trip reflects a downright dangerous side of this man's character.

He represents absolutely no one but himself!

Hitler also knew how to stage events on a monumental scale that made the viewer believe that his election was strangely inevitable.

DO NOT PUT THIS POWER HUNGRY PERSON IN OFFICE!

Mike, TX   July 25th, 2008 10:18 am ET

Interesting to note that none of the press reported about the 4 rock bands that were playing at the venue where Obama spoke. I wonder how big the crowd would have been had a rock concert not been scheduled then.

The Obama campaign has moved from being "about America" to being about Obama's ego.

J.C.   July 25th, 2008 10:18 am ET

I think second guessing our president is healthy.
If Obama were to be elected, he will be treated the same.
We have to maintain our independent thinking no matter what.
That's why USA is great.

Tracy---Indianapolis, IN   July 25th, 2008 10:18 am ET

ROCK CONCERT!!!!!!!YEA RIGHT WHENEVER OBAMA HAS A CROWD LIKE THAT THERE IS ALWAYS ANOTHER REASON WHY THE CROWD WAS SOOOOOOOOOOO LARGE.........OBAMA ALL THE WAY.........

David   July 25th, 2008 10:18 am ET

I think Obama feels this election is about him and not America. He continues with his empty rhetoric and no substance. His numbers are falling in America, he is losing the swingstates. He needs to be talking to Americans and not pandering the Europeans. I pray that God will not allow America to vote for Obama. He has a hidden agenda that will cause very dark days for America. I am happy that McCain is keeping up and defeating Obama in polls and will continue to do so as November draws closer. Its sad that Obama can talk the talk, but not walk the walk. Drop out Obama, America does not want you!

I was proud when after Senator Obama speech in Berlin to hear this commentary: "He is truly brilliant".

Charles   July 25th, 2008 10:18 am ET

It's good that Obama went on this trip, I truly believe he will be the next president of this country, and i do not believe he crossed any lines, the man is truly a presidential figure. McCain at first encouraged Mr Obama to take this fact finding trip, and then was angry about the facts he found. All McCain did after that was criticize and attacked the man behind his back the whole time he has been abroad. This says a lot about McCain who is vying to be our next president. Makes you wonder what kind of backbiting tactics he will use against the american people once he takes office. I think that is a risk the American people do not need to take. The polls say Obama is the biggest risk as president, but McCain's rhetoric, lies and backbiting shows that HE is truly the biggest risk. McCain has been whining like a stuck hog about the media coverage of Obama's trip as well, which in my humble opinion is childish and very juvenile, and i would not expect such things from a 70+ year old man who i think is too old to be president anyway. It's his mistake that pressured Obama into going abroad, and now he will pay for it by not winning the election.

Paranoid   July 25th, 2008 10:18 am ET

Obama decides to visit these countries this close to the election. He just "checking the box" to say he's been there, done that. He doesn't have enough experience to run a country and be commander-in-chief ot the most powerful military in the world. How can he lead if he's never served.
Why did he take the American Flag off his jet?
What are his intentions? He talks of change, but I don't need a sermon, I need to know what his plans are.
Holding hands and talking to the enemy are not the way of foreign policy.
Why hasn't anybody brought up his wife's thesis paper she wrote not that long ago–it would bury any other politician, but the media handles this guy with kid gloves because they don't want to be looked at as racist.
Finally, why did he cancel his trip to see the troops in Germany? That should have been the first place he stopped.

KMAN   July 25th, 2008 10:17 am ET

Well, he's certainly no George Bush or John McCain when it comes to oratory excellence ... thank God!

Imagine having an American leader once again who is willing to engage the world in a conversation regarding the future of human exisitence on this small orb.

John McCain in the mold of George Bush is simply a petty, ego-driven clown when he opens his mouth.

i dont know whats gotten into the american people. I cant understand
how a u.s. citizen can believe that we can go about this alone. I think it was great that obama went over to germany. This country needs to get back to what made us great in the first place. Thats establishing relationships with our partners in other countries. George Bush has given all americans a bad name. He's giving the republicans a bad name. I used to respect John Mccain but ive come to realize he's another bush. He wants to follow the same policies, he wants to use the same old republican political attacks. He is so fake. I was leaning towards voting for him but he has truly disappointed me the way that he is running his campaign. His major thing was being a maverick....being different..but he's no different than bush. They are one in the same

Community Organizer Obama. Kinda has a nice ring to it.

Florida Voter   July 25th, 2008 10:16 am ET

I think Sen. Obama's speech was brillant as all his speeches are. He understands the issues and what's facing America better than anyone I've seen in Washington. Grant it not that many of his Washington colleagues have the stage day in and day out to explain where they stand on the important issues. Never the less I think he is an inspiring and capable speaker. I just wish other people could see that. And I think if his skin was a different hue they would. I'm not saying everyone would vote for him but I'm saying he should be far ahead of McCain in the polls just based on the fact that he matches up with what the people are saying they want. I know some white people won't agree with this however racism does still exist in America. It is not as blatantly displayed as it once was none the less it still exist in the crevice of our society. Barack says he is a christian and one thing I know if it's God's will for Barrack to be president the devil in hell can not prevail against it.

God Bless Obama!

If you've ever been to a large event to see obama, you know that you have to get there several hours early. Don't you think it would be nice to provide people some entertainment while they are waiting several hours to hear him speak? Some of you people are extremely intollerant. He has every right to go overseas and speak. If you don't like it, go to your local grocery store, and watch John McCain create his own version of history in front of the cheese case.

"President Obama" will have the ability to 'hit the ground running' with these trips and introductions taken care of. With the current state of world affairs, this will be a good thing.

ET from OMAHA   July 25th, 2008 10:16 am ET

I have a question for the Republicans who disagree with OBAMA on his tour and speech in Berlin to consolidate our alliances.
How much will the IRAK war or the fight against AL-Queda and the talibans in Afghanistan will cost the USA if we were to fight them on our own?
How much will it cost to the taxpayer? How damageable will it be for our economy?
I'm not an economy major but my common sense tells me the war and the economy are tied and if we can minimize the cost of war my bringing other countries to our side and we can use the saving to help create jobs here in USA

Syl   July 25th, 2008 10:15 am ET

This whole trip was strickly PR for obama...what a sham the whole thing was...and paid for by the tax payer. Such deception has been played on the people, but in the end, when the media makes obama President of the USA...we will ALL have to pay for the foolishness of having elected this inexperience, full of himself unknown, and we will have taken a further step in loosing our precious democracy that the young folks do not understand and charish as us older folks do.

Barack over the line ---- again   July 25th, 2008 10:15 am ET

Slick barack crossed the line again. Of course he criticized a sitting president on foreigh soil, and made statements and promises that only the president or his representative could do. Obama is absolutely full of himself .... as usual. Barack has the gift of gab, and 20-20 hindsight and tries to look back and grab credit for decisions and actions he had nothing to do with.... totally disingenuous and inappropriate. America does not trust Obama – it is that simple.

Kevin   July 25th, 2008 10:15 am ET

Only yhe President should speak for the "American Citizens". Senator Obama speaks for the "Citizens of the state he represents".
If President Bush asked Obama to be his envoy and speak, then all is of – but guess what – he (President Bush) did not.
Obama needs to learn what being a Senator is first before contemplating to be President.
All of us have started at the bottom and worked our way up through good performance. Obama appears to want to go straight to the top without proving he can perform (like attending meetings here in the US and working for his constiuents).
He made a tactical and an ethical mistake.

Rob   July 25th, 2008 10:15 am ET

We prefer McCain. He appears more orientated in foreign affairs;acts accordingly. He doesn"t act like he's perfoming as an actor on a stage ?

carlo   July 25th, 2008 10:15 am ET

I almost never post on a McCain ticker because I'm an Obama supporter. Why is it that McCain's tickers hardly have any postings but anything that has Obama in the title gets overrun with comments? Is this a concerted effort to flood the comments so they can close and make it appear that Obama has no supporters? Anywho, McCain practically taunted Obama to go overseas and then when he does, he whines about it all week. If he would have been substantive, then he would have been accused of campaigning. He kept it general so now he's being presumptuous. If Obama would win an election by 40 and 50 points in Europe, why is it so hard for Obama detractors to admit that he could draw 200,000 in Germany? It's closer here and he drew 75,000 in Oregon, while McCain couldn't even fill a 1,900 seat auditorium. IT'S BECAUSE MCCAIN'S BORING!

Typical White Person   July 25th, 2008 10:15 am ET

From US News..

"troops from the United States—along with just a handful of other countries—do the bulk of the heavy fighting, while a number of other ISAF detachments are limited by their own governments' combat restrictions. These include prohibitions, or "caveats," against, for example, fighting in the snow for troops from some southern European nations. Other soldiers are required to stay in calmer areas of the country or to keep their aircraft grounded at night or to consult their home legislatures before operating near the volatile Pakistani border."

Yeah, NATO is really going to jump in and make the difference in Afghanistan...

Senator Obama came to Bagram Afghanistan for about an hour on his visit to "The War Zone". I wanted to share with you what really happened.

He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof vehicle, got to the area to meet with the Major General (2 Star) who is the commander here at Bagram. As the Soldiers where lined up to shake his hand he blew them off and didn't say a word as he went into the conference room to meet the General. As he finished, the vehicles took him to the ClamShell (a big top tent for playing basketball or working out with weights) so he could take his publicity pictures playing basketball. (You've seen this picture) After which he again shunned the opportunity to talk to soldiers, to thank them for their service. Obviously he was just here to make a showing for the American's back home. I think that if you are going to make an effort to come all the way over here you would thank those that are providing the freedom that they are providing for you. It was almost that he was scared to be around those that provide the freedom for him and our great country. If this is blunt and to the point I am sorry but I wanted you all to know what kind of caliber of person I saw. What you see in the news is all fake.

Does it bother anyone that this person is running around the world acting as though he is already the president? Is it really his place to travel to other nations making US policy statements when he hasn't even been elected? Remember when pelosi went to the middle east last year and made policy statements not only for the US (which she had no authority to make) but also for Isreal? Does anyone else find this behavior disturbing and dangerous?

Joan, Ontario   July 25th, 2008 10:13 am ET

Whoever wrote the headline about Obama "winning hearts but not minds in Berlin" was off the mark. That was a misleading headline because if you read the article it did not have facts that many people at all didn't agree with him. Perhaps a few maybe, but that's to be expected. Are they insinuating that over 200,000 people yesterday were not in agreement with him. Sure looked like it to me. Headlines are meant to grab a readers attention so they will read the article but they should be TRUE and not misleading. An earlier headline about Obama being "heckled" was also exaggerated because it was only ONE man! Some people will only read the headline and believe it much like some people will believe what they saw on the cover of the New Yorker. Yesterday Senator Obama represented your country really well and you should have all been very proud of him.

Can we please get back to AMERICA, where AMERICANS will be voting for our next president in a few short months??

If he is over there as a Senator, why are the others with him not getting any attention? I just find this whole thing so "convenient." I find it rather sad that so many Americans are ready to base our next president as being most UN-Bush-like. I am not a Bush fan, but I'm not ready to base my vote on who can present themselves as most opposite of Bush...

Don't we all want a better America? Don't we all want change? Clearly. If Obama could stop speaking in such broad, obvious terms (yes, we all in the world need to get along), and provide some substance, he might just make it... He doesn't have a lengthy record that we can look out to figure out just what he stands for.... WE NEED SUBSTANCE.

I dont' know who I am going to vote for yet, but I'm going to make a sound decision based on substance, and not just joyous words of hope... I have hope, and there are lots of people who inspire me... I need a president who is going to DO something, not just talk.

DJ in TX   July 25th, 2008 10:12 am ET

When McCain went on his last trip to Europe and Britian, there wasn't this much media scrutiny except for when he was in Iraq (and we know what happened there).

Let's look at it this way, maybe it was a plus that McCain didn't have as much scrutiny. It may have shown the lack of enthusiasm friends overseas have for McCain (and remember, we do call these countries allies).

No matter what you're feelings are about Germany, France, etc, OUR country, yes the US is full of immagrants from those countries. WE have military bases in some of those countries (I was stationed in Germany) and with our Global economy, we need those countries to be our friends, have some common interests with us and we need their help to fight this war on terror. We can't do it alone.

So criticize if you will, but if McCain should win, he'll need those same ALLIES that Obama is talking to as well.

bohica   July 25th, 2008 10:12 am ET

Why does this guy feel the need to apologies to the Germans for us, we have nothing to apologies for. He needs to put America first, instead of kowtowing to the Europeans. Sure they love him, he's a socialist just like them. Wake up America, Ba, Ba, Ba, run to Obama little sheep.

Melanie   July 25th, 2008 10:12 am ET

Listen to what the guy is saying. The issue is not one of the specifics of policies. It's one of approach. He's setting a tone of leadership that will enable America to connect with the outside world. The other leaders obviously love the guy, and feel that FINALLY here's someone they can talk with, although they're being very correct.
And what was McCain doing–chatting in a German restaurant. Talk about your pathetic contrasts...

Tom in New Hope, MN   July 25th, 2008 10:12 am ET

It is interesting yesterday Obama was attempting to start repairing our international relations with Germany and John McCain went to German restaurant. I wonder what was the most effective?

If you are young please don't believe the condition George Bush has gotten America into is what America should be. America has been respected in the world and we can be again. We have to change our ways to regain respect again. Repeating the policies of the past 7 years will not move this country forward. It will just enable are continued slide downward. Polls show eighty percent of the country says the country is on the wrong track. You need to vote that belief if you want to change to the right track.

Vote Wisely!

He claims reponsibility for things he had no part of and then acts as if he's a great leader when he sponsors a bill that already has overwhelming bipartisan support, he won't even acknowledge that the recent GI benefit bill included the issues that Mccain wanted in it. He won't acknowledge the brave, tough work of the soldiers of the surge, How can he be commander in chief?? He has %100 politicized the war...every position he took(and there are many) was to further his political career....can we be sure he will do what is best for American citizens or for his career??

American GI   July 25th, 2008 10:11 am ET

Im tired of people trying to make excuses just to derail someone that is actually thinking for a change. First, Obama was getting nailed for not going overseas. Now that he went overseas and brought people together and gave and extraordinary speech, people are complaining about that.

Plus now, people are trying to say a concert was giving. Oh really? Where's your link showing the concert? I have seen nothing showing a concert, and Im pretty sure they didnt hand out American flags at the concert.

I fight for my country so Americans can have freedom and a decent place to live. Not so some people can sit around and lie or put out false information just to try to influence elections.

Joecaptain   July 25th, 2008 10:11 am ET

I am sick of politics!!! It is a big shame what is happening. You have an American senator over in Germany attracting 200,000 europeans enthusiastically and people here are still attacking this AMERICAN at home simply because. he is not the right type of American–he is not a tradition white male. Yes i said it. I know a ot of people are avoiding the obvious. the fact is, a lot of Americans doubt Obama subconsciously because of his race and the history of race relations in America–they might be good people. But imagine this: had he been white, male, and had this kind of reception– my Gosh!!– there will a lot of white folks sitting in their living room with their kid, watching this guy with tears in their eyes. I wish Obama was not running for president for this reason

Texas Blue   July 25th, 2008 10:11 am ET

See the picture. Get used to it kids. This is what a great free world leader looks and acts like. American flags waving in the German early evening light. Not being torched. Now that is an image we haven't seen under the bully George W.
I like this.

But I forgot you like to shoot hoops. Im sure they have a basketball court with plenty of news coverage from ABC, CBS and NBC for you to pose for your liberal party.

Remember Folks – We LOST in Vietnam, even with the war "Hero" McCain. McCain wants to "Win" in Iraq because he lost in Vietnam. It's a personal thing for him. He doesn't care who gets hurt in the process, so long as he can finally claim a "WIN" in a war.

Crossed the line? He didn't even cross the finish line for the primaries officially and fairly. Not to mention he hasn't crossed the line to win the Presidency.

Arrogant, snobby, wimpy, self-absorbed, egomaniac. Inside you know he's saying "I cannot believe it's this easy to run for the highest office of the U.S.A. – you don't even have to be patriotic or experienced".

He reads off a telemprompter – not even his own words. Just words... words you can Xerox.

Wasn't it McWar who suggested that Obama visit the region? Now he's whining. McWar is jealous because he thought Obama would invite him to go along. I bet he thinks tagging along with Obama would somehow have boosted his ratings.

It would be nice if he would retire as most people his age have already done.

Obama, the political jesus, sends his message of hope to Europe. He's already acting like he's president. What a nice job he is doing taking the conservative political base, that has not rallied behind Mccain, and forcing there hand to choose sides. Forcing them to swallow their pride, once again, and vote for a moderate for the sole sake of saving America from this Socialist hack.

If Obama wants to go 'global' in his efforts to be elected President of the U.S. let him foot the bill for the travel and pay the Secret Service out of his own pocket instead of us Americans paying for his 'campaigning' in foreign countries. If the U.S. economy is so bad off, Obama should not be wasting our US tax dollars for his campaign abroad.

Why are we sitting in Berlin? Love his answer, not sure what the heck it had to do with the question, but I guess it's better than him trying to go off script and actually babbling mindlessly to answer a question like his last attempt.

Who exactly does he think he is, this overseas spectacle has just reinforced for me how arrogant and self-important he actually believes he is.

The neo-cons want to portray Obama trip as a photo opt but he is really trying to improve our relations with other countries!! Something Bush never did and Mccain has yet to do!! Bush always wanted to bully and start that fear-mongering mess!!

The only fear people have right now is this economy. How are we going to eat, how are we going to be able to afford healthcare, what are they going to do about high gas prices and etc. Yes, the war is important but the economy is more significant right now!!!

There goes the haters, Now their disputing if the people were there b/c of a later concert that day or if they really wanted to see OBAMA, where did you guys get that from FIX NEWS or LIMBough? I bet they didn't bring up any of the false statements McCain's been spitting all week about the middle east. I bet they bickered about OBAMA saying he's a citizen of the world. Guess what? Ronald Reagan said the same thing in his berlin speech and JFK claimed "i am a Berliner". I doubt you had a problem with that.
There will always be haters no matter what you do, you just do what you believe in and hope some people agree with you, others will not, but they'll come around.

Antonio   July 25th, 2008 10:08 am ET

This is getting ridiculous. McCain travels to country after country and gives speeches, but no media asks the question of why are we here. He gave a speech in Canada and no one asked why are we here. Everyone talks about Obama avoiding gaffes, but McCain has one a day without so much of a second thought by the MSM. This is doing the country another disservice. The MSM let down the country when it failed to challenge conventional wisdon with respect to the Iraq war. Yet, they have learned no lessons from those failures. They seem only interested in creating a story that this is a close race and Obama has so many problems that he cannot win. Think about it, the media ran with the flip-flop farce about Obama. However, they failed to note that McCain has flipped and flopped all over the place. No one really challenges McCain about any of the nonsense that comes out of his mouth. To accuse another member of the Senate of what amounts to treason, is akin to McCarthy. Again, there was no media challenging that notion or calling McCain out for that. When Gen. Clark stated a truth that being a POW does not qualify McCain to be president, the media ran with the RNC narrative that Clark was out of line. Clark and Obama got pressed on the comments as being out of bounds. Obama has continously praised McCain for his military service and has never attempted to devalue it, even though military service is not prerequisite to serving as President.

The American people need to be better served by the press, which is why the founders protected the right of the free press in the Constitution. It should not be the job of bloggers to point out the serious deficiencies of McCain.

demveteran   July 25th, 2008 10:08 am ET

This guy has gone too far. And how are we going to hold the press accountable for it's contributing to building Obama's cult of personality. I know we needed a counterbalance to Bush, but the king-making aspect of the media makes me think it's time for a revolution in the spirit of Thomas Jefferson.

Let's tear down the corporations.

obamania   July 25th, 2008 10:08 am ET

Obama is only a Senator right now. We have not elected him to represent the American people yet. He is undermining our process. Well intentioned or not, he should not be speaking on behalf of all of us. This makes us look bad and makes me feel like he is expecting other countries to choose the American president. I feel offended by what he is doing prematurely. Immature leadership can create big hopes with big let downs and big problems. Creating bigger problems is not the solution to solving the problems that we already have! Obama is this how you're going to represent the American people? Make promises that we don't know about, talk about how you're going to change the American people without our consent? Is this what I can look forward to - getting walked on and being told to bend to other countries' wills. Exactly what are you promising over there? Or are you tricking them for our benefit? Both of these are problematic and shameful Obama.

Larisa, Chicago IL   July 25th, 2008 10:08 am ET

How many Senate meetings did McCain attend during his campaign? Let's be real: campaigning is full time job 24/7. McCain pushed Obama to go overseas hoping for some missteps or whatever. And now when the trip is a success, when the world leaders seams to take him seriously, and the people shows interest in the new face of America, McCain is green with jealousy! If he'd had a chance to give a speech in Berlin now, he would do it in a heartbeat.

Obama is a new time leader who understands the reality of our time – we are a part of the world, and only working with other countries we can make our life safe.

Becky   July 25th, 2008 10:07 am ET

I appreciate Obama's global perspective more than McCain's "Keeping America America". It's not the 1950's anymore. McCain would only hold our country back in the dark-ages. Wonder if McCain has tried out email yet? Or if he even knows what "www." is used for.

Only he and he alone can solve our country's problems and he will do it by speaking out. I think McCain can do the job as POTUS and hire Osamma to give speeches. Yes, that is the ticket.

Wake up America. This candidate is a clear and present danger to our way of living. He doesn't respect our values and he will create new industries in Kenya and give the Welfare Queens your tax dollars.

Brad   July 25th, 2008 10:07 am ET

Do we have to adopt a policy of appeasement to terrorists to 'partner' with our European 'allies'? In some cases, America does need to lead and not follow.

I like the way Obama talks, but not the substance of what he says. His old message was one of Socialism, but he is the candidate of change. The problem is, the 'real change' is in his message.

If he had a record, we could evaluate him on that. He has been mostly derelict in his duties as a Senator, and his few votes have been far left.

Morgan   July 25th, 2008 10:07 am ET

I wonder how many American television viewers even know and understand the significance of the European history of which Obama spoke? McCain gets cloudy about recent history, thinks there is still a Czechoslovakia as example. Obama has and expresses an incredible understanding of twentieth century European history and of America's interrelationship with Western Europe.
Perhaps with a President Obama and his promise of support for higher education, our children will at least be intellectually equipped to understand the world better. Those who don't know history are doomed to continually repeat it as they say. That's why McCain wants to repeat the Viet Nam War in Irag and the region.

Michelle, PA   July 25th, 2008 10:07 am ET

McCain is indeed stuck in a bilateral Cold War mentality, but America in the 21st Century will not be the surviving Cold War hyperpower astride the world like a solitary Colossus. IF we get a grip on our economic, energy and security issues, we will remain an influential "superpower" – but only one of many.
The 21st Century is a multipolar, technologically advanced global stage, not a 20th century bipolar one (much less a 19th century colonial one!) and we need a leader who understands modern issues. Obama in this interview demonstrates his respect for our sovereign allies as equals and the gray shades of sophisticated, nuanced policy successful modern leadership will require.
McCain would have fit in well in 1985, but his time is past. His world view is far too outdated and simplistic today.

Oh, and as for Obama not meeting and greeting troops in Germany – did you not hear that visit was canceled last-minute at the Pentagon's request? (Listen more, talk less.)

Barack Obama's trip abroad proved three things, among others: one, the people and countries abroad are looking to the United States to regain its leadership role; two, regain the respect it has squandered the past seven years; three, Obama did not need anyone to keep him upright, awake, and have to provide him with what to say in his speeches and talks with foreign leaders and US Military Commanders.

Why is it that none of the US media are reporting that the turn out for Obama included many non-English speaking people who were there to attend two rock concerts at that location on that day?

This is not the first time the Obama campaign has staged an event in
concert with a concert.

Where is full and unbiased reporting??????

no room for that nonsense this year, we just need to hurry and anoint the king before he gets upset.

Neutral   July 25th, 2008 10:05 am ET

Amazing. First people say that they are upset that Obama hasn't been in the middle east in a long while and now that he is there and getting all this attention they bash him for giving speeches in Berlin. Regardless of the concerts that were held before the speech, they still stuck around and listened to what he had to say after the concerts....

Why can we not see that having allies and regenerating the ties that we had before Bush will only help out our situation. Europeans for the most part know more about our politics than the majority of Americans. Whenever I have gone abroad it has always amazed me how much more educated they are in our system than actual US citizens. To bash what they view as a good replacement of Bush is ridiculous when I ask people here why they are voting for one person or the other it is amazing to me that some people don't really have a good reason other than becuase one candidate is Black or has a different middle name. Hardly the kind of thought process that elevates us as most people say we are than other countries.

Neville Chamberlain, British Prime Minister and savvy Statesman, "brought hope and real leadership" that was supposed to "benefit all."

Instead of "making enemies and saber-rattling like george w and his henchman," he talked tough with a thug leader of a European country to improve relations on many fronts "using diplomacy and sanctions."

Chamberlain's politician's experience forced Herr Hitler to sign a piece of parer guaranteeing peace – the price was the loss of freedom for the western part of another country – it wasn't Chamberlain's country so why care?

Can't wait for Prez Obama to return from Iran with another piece of paper. I can hear him now, speaking just before the Obamapalooza 09 rock concert, ""My good friends, for the first time in our history, an American President has returned from Iran bringing peace with honour. I believe it is peace for our time."

When we forget history, we're bound to repeat it....

From what I have read, the way we spoke to other countries in the past 7 years was to fly King George, Qween Condi, or war zarr Rummy into a country, go to a meeting and tell everyone what we expecdted them to do or else. Period. Meeting over. Obama listening to them? What a fresh novel idea.

Ferlandos and Cat Robinson,

I live in Berlin, and although I wasn't at the speech, I can say that Obama's speech was all people have been talking about. Today I've met a number of people who were there and no mention of music.

Also not mentioned in the local press.

200,000 people went there to listen to Obama (many saw it as a historical event) and not to listen to a concert... either you're spreading or creating misinformation.

BTW I would describe Obama's economic policies as wholly American, not a bit European. Even his health care policy is a far cry from the universal coverage that exists here. Horrible really, not to have to worry about your health insurance if you lose your job....

How about he and all of his liberal Democratic Senators and friends give there money to the poor and quit trying to give mine away. Obama get back home where you belong and quit playing President.

And if these youths were there only to hear the bands, wouldn't they have left after the concert and before Obama reached the podium? I guess some people cannot face the fact or accept that Obama just may be our next new president, and has the personality and ability to bring our country together, along with Europe. We all need each other and if you're all against unity, then McBush is the old man for you!

The Dems and Reps add pork barrel and earmarks to bills that they aren't even connected to and spend your money and the rest of the American public pay for things that aren't even worth a penny. Bills which are necessary for the common good of all of us should not be messed around with those pork barrel and earmarks. They should be brought to a vote individually with the transparency of who wrote it and what and who it effects. We should see who spends our money foolishly when there are homeless vets and everyday people that need real help and shelter, better & equal education for ALL, build homes in the Katrina ravaged areas and other Mother Earth distasters such floods, tornados, hurricanes, etc.

Could it be that some Americans this morning are feeling a sense of guilt? And, possibly some envy? We questioned Obama's patriotism!?! Germany sure does NOT question Obama's patriotism. It was so wonderful to see 200,000 German people waiving the American flag, shouting "OBAMA!" and "YES, WE CAN!" Envy, yes. Why? Because Obama gave a speech in Berlin that paralleled the likes of JFK and Ronald Reagan. Any politician, both alive and dead, would give their eye tooth to be greeted by a crowd of 200,000 cheering people abroad, shouting their name, waiving the red, white and blue. Obama accomplished yesterday what few American politicians have done in the last 200 years. I am so very, very proud of him. I am proud he belongs to America. OBAMA '08

As I have posted many times before...

McCain is campaigning to be Commander-In-Chief, not POTUS.
Obama is campaigning to be President of the United States, not C-I-C.

McCain has demonstrated that his foreign policy will put a priority on security through military strength. Strength, as defined by McCain.

Obama has demonstrated that his foreign policy will put a priority on security through diplomatic strength. Strength, as defined by Obama.

Doris,Memphis,TN   July 25th, 2008 9:58 am ET

Obama is to be commended for his outstanding and successful trip abroad. McCain could never deliver a speech of this magnitude as a senator or president. I cannot believe Katie Couric and CBS. To have the audacity to cut the huge gaffe John McCain made in the interview with Katie and replace it with a negative statement on Barack Obama was so disingenous. If Barack coughs loud they report it.

It’s funny how Some Americans pretend they don't really care what them “furriners” think about the US of A and yet they all talk about the need for respect for America the world over. Guess what respect is a two way road. Nuff said.

The truth is that America is just a "Island onto itself" unless we think as a family taking care of each other our country will loose. New style of leader ship is required. Not so sound stupid, but President Bush and his tax break has cause a lot of risky business and Senator John McCain is trying to ride his coat tail into the white house with the same failed policy. Unless we let the Department of Justice do their job the crooks will continue to flease America. The Crooks Know who they are...

All of Europe already VOTED unanimously in the UN for the Anti terrorist war in Afghanistan and Iraq. They did that while Obama was (one of the few) voting against it here in the States.

He's now in Europe asking them to join the fight?

Hello?

Tom in S.A.   July 25th, 2008 9:57 am ET

NATO is there, does he think he can convince them to send more troops? The U.S. is working with these countries, he's not proposing anything that isn't already being done. NATO has pulled troops back, most those countries are pusses and want to talk with the bad guys just like your beloved BHO.

BHO wants the U.S. to be a socialist country, well this country was founded by our fore fathers who wanted to get away from big socialist gov't. All you who want BHO, do the opposite of your ancestors and migrate back to a socialist country, we don't need it here. Your ancestors were much smarter than you are......

Obama has shown a respectful command of foreign policy issues during his trip so far. He seems to understand the importance of rebuilding our alliances abroad with all nations so that we can work together to win the real war on terror in Afghanistan, while bringing a responsible end to the situation in Iraq.

Obama has made me proud to be a supporter through an inspiration to bring people together for a common cause.

Why is Obama speaking to a bunch of people that can't vote for him. If he is there to boost his foreign policy credentials, doesn't he have to do something first besides talk? This tour upsets me because he is touring like he is already the next president and America's choice. He has not won anything yet. Wait until you are President and then go touring and tell your plan. Only then are you are renewing relations and paving a way ahead and therefore making a difference.

Spend more time on the military bases where there are tens of thousands of military personnel that can vote for you. Military members overseas are rarely talked to before an election, so that would have been worth the time spent. Make your all your claims to them, it would have still ended up in the media.

Marik   July 25th, 2008 9:56 am ET

Obama rocks. His words are positive, what is wrong with that? Are you Republicans and PUMAs so addicted to negativity that you can't appreciate a change of heart? Negativity is destructive to the world and to the human body, your stresses will kill you, your biases will maim you, your hatred will destroy you. Embrace hope, embrace unity, embrace Obama and the world will once again embrace America.

Heh, well he has a gift of speaking – and dreaming. if he thinks Europeans will gladly and nicely follow US lead and they are eagerly waiting for it, than he is up for a big surprise. They will welcome him there, pet his back, nice diplomatic chit-chat, and send him home. And I speak as a fellow European from Poland who lives, studies, works and pays taxes in the USA (that's the reason why I think I have the right to say few things here, since I also pay for that freedom), and can, indeed, watch things from both perspectives. The fact of the matter is though, that selfish as it sounds, people in Europe mind their own business and their own policy – quite similar to Americans that don't like to be told or "led" to do something. I think European Central Bank showed it clearly enough when it was rising interest rates to curb inflation in EUROZONE while FED was decreasing them, effectively dumping the Dollar.

P.S. If LEADERS in Europe don't listen that intently, will China or Russia do? Hmmmm

Go Obama! When he's elected, it's sure going to be nice to have a leader we can be proud of. I watched his speech yesterday and thought, "This is more it. This is the kind of person who should represent the United States to the world." Given the size and response of the Berlin crowd, they think so as well.

Nas from PA   July 25th, 2008 9:55 am ET

The cowboy image and "your either with us or against us" disapated a little from the trip. Though it may be just a trickle, its a start. Bush alienated everyone, nobody wants to be a part of anything with us, when they do its because of need. Obama may not be the next president but he has shown what could be and laid a small blueprint in which to follow for who McCain should he win. The question will be will he be smart enough to use it. Other countries have stronger enconomys and nations in need have other alternatives to the US dollar that is dwindling by the day next to some foreign money. the US has to remain the leader and that can only happen with change.

Michele   July 25th, 2008 9:55 am ET

Does it ever stop? There is no end to Obama's pompous and arrogant behavior. I think we would have to ask, how much of that was staged. It is such an insult to the American people that Obama would try to be compared to J.F. Kennedy Obama is no J.F. Kennedy. Get yourself in check Obama, you have not won the election yet, as I recall you need the votes from the American people, not the Berliners.

Senator Obama cannot win for losing. Before he went overseas to the Middle East he was accused of not having done anything or been anywhere. Once he left he was accused of going on a campaign trip and not a fact finding trip, like Senator McCain hasn't done the same thing. Now he draws hundreds of thousands of foreigners waving American flags and he is criticized for that. If no one had shown up for his speech he would have been criticized for that. What will he be criticized for next?

Saddened Democrat   July 25th, 2008 9:54 am ET

If his intent was to send a message, who is he doing this on the behalf of? It is the president's job to send messages on behalf of us, he has no authority to do this and has completely overstepped his bounds. He presumes too much when he thinks he has the right to speak on behalf of the U.S. to foreign nations, this is what he does after he becomes president, not before. As a Democrat even this is too much for me, and then to abandon visiting wounded soldiers because you couldn't take your press with you and would actually have to talk to them without it being a photo-op, what have we come to when this is who our party looks to as the future?

him in office will devastate this country. We will not be sovereign any more, higher taxes, talking to the enemy, partial birth abortions, marriage between a man and a woman, having dealings with some of the idiots hes in bed with is so outrageous its stupid. And when he went to Germany he did not visit our wounded soliders. This is so sad. He is only an orator. He does more than flip flop. He takes both sides. A person that flip flops turns over to the other side and usually only once. Hes doing is over and over and over. He does not commit to anything. Depending where he is thats what he puts out. He won't have a debate with McCain because he knows he will not do well. He needs to commit to something and stay there. Yes, politicians change their minds and waffle. But, he does it all the time. Would you rather have a young bright and alert intellectual mind in a crisis

The answer is simple,
Obama 08

Finally--yes!   July 25th, 2008 9:53 am ET

Finally, a president who understands the big picture and will walk the walk instead of just talking about it.

The "inexperience" so many of you use as reasons to go against Obama is really inexperience to do things the old, nasty, political, Washington way (aka–Clintons!). Obama is brilliant and is already starting to get things turned around.

This is not just America out there on its own. We have to deal with the rest of the world. Obama's brilliance and charisma will help us do that.

I am thankful he's our candidate and really hope to God he will get into office and stay there for 2 terms–and that he's safe the entire time.

Ferlandos, Cat Robison, and joann,

The biggest concert in Germany is the annual Reggae Festival at Koln. This concert draws about 50,000 people at its peak during the four-day coverage. How do you account for 200,000 people? Yes, they were there to see Senator Obama. The bands were there to keep the people entertained as they waited. The only rival to the Obama event is the Oktober fest. So, there goes you stupid statement.

How naive.. we as individual and country spend more than we have/earn. Have you ever heard of debt... well we are living and fighting war on borrows money.. China and Japan own Trillions of $ worth of our debt.. so in essence we are spending their money which we will have to pay them back in future with some interest.. so it is good that our currency is going down.. which in turn is bringing down out debt and it is also good that oil is going up because china and japan have to spend their USD for oil but this gives Saudis the control of US debt..

I don't understand why some people – including McCain – are making a big deal out of Obama going overseas and making a speech. McCain went to Canada last month specifically to make a speech on how he supports NAFTA, and nobody made that "campaigning" out as anything unusual.

Obama must be our President for the sake of American humanity and hospitality across the world.

Obama is so full of it sometimes. He keeps saying he made this trip as a U.S. Senator and not a presidential candidate...then why did his campaign fund the trip? Why is he only doing this now that he's running for office? What other senator goes overseas to speak at organized political rallies in front of 200,000 people?

Let's hope he picks Kathryn Sebelius as his VP so that there is at least one grounded and honest politician on the democratic ticket.

America’s allies in Europe are crucial to the success of anti-terror efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq

A couple months ago Obama said the terrorists are in Iraq to fight Americans, suggesting that the terrorists were not in Iraq until America invaded. If we are pulling out unconditionally then why do we need help with anti-terror efforts in Iraq? Furthermore if we should not have have been in Iraq in the first place why do we need anti-terror efforts in Iraq?

BTW just wondering if any of you have put it together yet. Want to know why we should stay in Iraq? What country is between Iraq and Afghanistan? IRAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh yes, OB has all the answers and JM is wrong. WRONG. How dare OB thinks he is king of the world. He is a really inexperienced man who is running to the whitehouse. He has no time to visit wounded troops but can go to a gym. We know where his heart really lies. How dare he give that speech blasting the U.S. on foreign soil. This man is scary.

Glad to be an Independent   July 25th, 2008 9:50 am ET

Obama said it very well that the U.S. needs to partner with countries. The first George Bush partnered with a huge coalition of governments during the first Iraq War, the second George Bush went it alone in Iraq. Now, relations with even our allies is not good. The U.S. needs to have strong alliances to combat terrorism. Many of our allies are not willing to send troops to help us in Afghanistan anymore. Why? The U.S. disregard for the rest of the world. Bush and now McCain have this vision that the U.S. can go it alone. A return to strong diplomacy to challenge our enemies and re-building alliances is needed. Thanks to Obama for recognizing that although the U.S. is the strongest nation economically and militarily in the world, we can not go it alone. We need the help and trust of many other countries in this world.in order to be successful.

I'm sending this comment separate because the mods won't have the cojones to publish it.
Everyone ask yourself one question and then answer it honestly after giving it some real thought, don't knee-jerk your answer.

That questions is: If Barack Obama were a white junior senator from Illinois, would he be where he is today?

Seems everyone wants to be a part of electing the first black president, regardless of the damage his presidency WILL do to this country.

This is very arrogant on his part to be telling European partners what they need to be doing to support the war efforts. He is just a 1st term Senator. This trip is going to backfire big time on him.

Why is he in Germany giving speeches?????????

Bob   July 25th, 2008 9:49 am ET

Speaking to Americans living or serving abroad during the trip would have been fine. They are voters just like any other American.
Speaking to the crowd in Berlin was way out of line, and I'm sure they appreciated the "Remake the World" comment as much as I did. Way out of line, not over! His time would have been better spent serving on the Senate floor like he was elected and is being paid to do.

WM   July 25th, 2008 9:49 am ET

To all you who are idolizing the second coming I have just one number for you. 143. 143 represents the numbers of days your precious Obama has been in the Senate. Before that the Illinois state legislature. So a freshman senator with 143 days experience wants to be the leader of the greatest nation in the world. Do any of you see a problem with that? I mean really. Do you think that if you took a new job at a Fortune 500 company that after 143 days you could become the CEO? Please. Use your brain that God gave you and realize that for all the hoopla this man creates, for all the "Hope & Change" grabage he spews, for all the socialist policy proposals he has listed on his campaign website, and for most of all, with only 143 days in Washington, Obama is not the right person for the job.

He is fuly entitled to make such a speech. The most he did was argue that more international diplomacy was needed. Why must the media try to make mince meat of everything Obama does? What about McCain's sixth gaffe of the campaign season? Abotu his not understanding the economy, or confusing Sunni/Shia, or confusing the start date of the surge and its relation to an Iraqi "uprising," and so forth?

The choice is clear.

1) Realizing that we live in a global world and that we have the opportunity to lead that world through example, which builds respect abroad = Vote Obama

2) Trying to lead the world through brute force, which will make everybody hate us and possibly bankrupt us much like the old Soviet Union = Vote McCain

If they love him so much in Europe, maybe he should stay and run for president of the EU. Didn't our ancestors fight the revolution because we didn't want Europeans telling us what to do? How many of the 200,000 cmae for the free rock concert and party? Since the biilions we are spending in Iraq all all deficit spending dollars, how does Obama cut taxes and have money for domestic spending? Proud army and navy mom, please get checked for rabies.

McAwesome   July 25th, 2008 9:44 am ET

Now Obama has taken McCains line. We need more NATO troops, not 20,000 americans. Nato is a world force and they took over the running of things in Afghanistan, so it took the pressure of the US forces. We have some of the best special forces brigades in Afghanistan and i trust they are doing their best to get OBL, dont need Obama turning Afghanistan into his political policy becuase it might win him some votes.

Robert   July 25th, 2008 9:44 am ET

Tell me why people from European countries would want to send "more NATO troops to Afghanistan?" I guess it's so they can 'feel our pain.'

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. I can see that happening. They'll volunteer in droves just for the chance to have some whacked-out, misled extremist blow them up in a gee I AM powerful display of "toughness."

I'm an idiot and I could see the error in that "engage with us" thinking.... Obama is showing his naivety.

The ONLY way anyone engages in ANYTHING is because there's MONEY in it. All those $$$$ Obama's gonna reinvest....will go through the same under-the-table route that politicians have been using to grease each other for years. And if there's a hint that there's something in it for us...we'll continue to let them do it. (We haven't stopped it yet have we...?)

It is the new world-global village-we are all in the same boat politics, and he is right.
All the previous and current mentality in D.C. only took us to a terrible and unnecessary war, tumbling dollar, high fuel prices and diminishing importance and relevance in world affairs...

In order to sit down with two countries to form a peace treaty, you have to sit down with each prior to that to build trust. That same trust to enable better trade and security abroad requires a foundation of ESTABLISHED communication as well. We do live in a global village. Nothing substantial will ever be accomplished without communication and cooperation from here on out. Thank God we now have a candidate that realizes this! Obama, you are doing your country proud!!!!

"Can't survive on our own"... why not?? We've been on our own for a long, long time. The rest of the world is envious of us; they always have been and they always will be. We are the most prosperous and most free nation in history. What do we need the rest of the world for? We don't need them; they need us and they hate us for that. And if we really are that bad or if we really are in such a "mess", why is it that the rest of the world is beating down our border doors in an attempt to get into this country? Why aren't Americans attempting to escape to other countries?? If you all hate this country so much, and if you think that it is in such bad shape, I hear that there's a lot of cheap land available down in Mexico. Maybe you all should spend some time there and maybe then you'll understand just how good you have it here.

Dave in Houston   July 25th, 2008 9:39 am ET

I think most of us Americans want to be the world leader, but not the world bully. Some would just have us quietly slink off the world stage and focus inwardly exclusively, but that thinking is not possible with the transportation and communications systems of the 21st century! (In the 18th century, when Europe was 3 months away by boat, we could afford to be totally isolationist.)

Bill Clinton did a great job in cooperating with our allies and demonstrating world leadership with due respect to our friends. And so did the first Pres. Bush - we accomplished everything we wanted in the first Gulf War, but we did it through international consensus. When the son tried to go it alone, being a bully, the result has been an expensive failure and condemnation from our allies.

From the reception he is getting abroad, it looks like Barack Obama's election ITSELF could go a long way in fixing the damage with our friends, and you'd be a fool if you don't think that is it very valuable to fix that damage.

Isn't that what we've been doing - keeping the international community in the loop in tackling the Taliban and Al Qaeda?

What's next for Obama? First construing a presidential seal. Maybe his next plan will be naming his jet to Air Force Uno.

The idea that speeches are just words strung togther to create paragraphs and sweeping emotion lends itself to absolutely nothing. I was watching this speech, and thinking about Berlin and Kennedy, and how three German words in his speech can live on for years. Then I started to think about how Kennedy expressed his desire to win the space race by the end of the decade and we did it. Where were the engineering models? Where were his blueprints for a spaceship? If anyone truly thinks words are just words, see how long you can shout Fire in a crowded theatre before arousing action.

Deb, Allentown, PA   July 25th, 2008 9:37 am ET

Hmmm...the age old question. Which came first? The chicken or the egg?

Which came first? The concert or the speech? My understanding is that the concert was sponsored in order to give the waiting throngs something with which to occupy themselves. I'm pretty sure 200K people didn't show up for a free concert, no matter how much you Obama-haters might think otherwise.

The real question is:

How would it have been a violation of the Hatch Act for US Foreign Service Workers to have attended a speech (or free concert – you can't have it both ways, Republicans) on their own time? Sounds like another abuse of freedom on the part of the current administration. Of course, that's just par for the course these days.

larry buchas   July 25th, 2008 9:37 am ET

America needs Europe in the fight against terror. I doubted Obama before on the commander and foreign affairs issue, but now he has convinced me beyond reasonable doubt that he is much better than Mccain. He will make a great president.

Remember Bush's foreign policy 'if you're not with us, you're against us'? What a stupid Hollywood stereotype cowboy. You'd think he was an 11 year old neighborhood bully. The international community was utterly offended. Bush then followed his words with actions that polarized the US. Invading another country when we were unprovoked and need based on lies. Our President Bush is the laughing stock of the global community. People in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East ask me how in the world we put this failure of a man in charge and kept him there for 8 years. Now these same people are holding their breath that the American voters return to intelligence and decency by electing Senator Obama. Many American voters are unaware of how closely we are being watched this election cycle.

Obama is just the average man from Chicago. His trip in Berlin was clearly staged. Once again giving another speech. All his speeches are the exact same. He starts out slow and soft any gets louder at the end just your like Pastor.

White America is just not ready to trust a person of color to such a high office. It's a shame but, true. The funny thing about it, is he would probably be one of the greatest leaders the US has seen in a long time. Because the one thing White America needs to understand is that when we are given such leadership we tend to to a great job at it. I mean really why do you folks care where he said the message? It was a great message and really I think everyone has access to a television these days. Oh and we do need help in the war on terror!

I'm not going to jump all over Obama for going to other countries since McCain did the same thing while the Democrats were still duking it out. Claiming that going to another country means he's ignoring problems at home is baseless. However, addressing a crowd in a foreign nation is useless and mostly just for show - which is what Obama is really all about. More time should be spent with the leaders of these foreign nations.

What Americans, who are incredibly uninformed, fail to realize is that we are part of a global world, we are not an island . Europe is vitally important to the US economy as is US to Europe.

We need to get over this self satisfaction. We are not the greatest nation on earth- we are among many great nations. We need to work together. It's the old united we stand, divided we fail and it applies globally.

The comment about NATO taking over more and saving billions makes no sense. The United States pays more than a third of the entire NATO budget and gives up the most personnel to man it. It really doesn't matter which NATO country goes we are still paying for it. Europe also has a problem getting Soldiers to the fight and would require US military airplanes to get them there. The US military charges NATO for the gas, but since we pay the budget we are really charging ourselves. I don't see the billions in savings that are being claimed. I spent 7 years between two different NATO HQs.

Cat and Not an obamabot.....Obama doesn't want to rule the world nor will he attempt to speak French I'm sure. Bush and his cronies have isolated the US with it's bullying tactics for 8 years and it's time we had a President willing to work with other nations for the good of us all. Novel concept huh. As for speaking French, they'll understand him perfectly since he speaks like a statesman not like an old man with alzheimers !

Sonia   July 25th, 2008 9:28 am ET

I don't think its a good idea for a presidential candidate to be roaming about abroad. He and the media is acting as though he is already the President. From the general consensus I have, nobody likes Obama. I think all this media frenzy is to get him in your face and force people to elect him while making Mccain looking like a duff.

TO CHECK AND CHECKMATE (AKA REPUKE), as a retired military member I understand the consequences of Mr. Obama visiting the troops in Germany, it would have been a conflict of interest due the fact that he was under the umbrella of his campaign (campaign funds were used). The troops will understand, good choice Mr. Obama, we really don't want hear the GOP try to make the visit an issue. Obama 08!

Once Barrack is in power, our taxes are going to sky rocket. More large corporations will leave the US because of the cost of doing business here. He will allow the UN to set our policies. Israel will be divided and weakened. Our healthcare system will be in shambles. He wants to destroy everything that this country has worked so hard to accomplish. Yes he can, oh yes he can.

How can I say this. The same way that the Barrack cult followers can say that McCain is just like Bush, he doesnt care about the "working" people, he wants to go to war with everyone. Show me where you find this in his platform.

Anthony   July 25th, 2008 9:27 am ET

It has taken a man, with African ancestry, to pull America from the ditch of worldwide hatred. An America cursed with the memories of slavery and bigotry. A Black man has risen from the ashes, with a nation on his shoulders, to restore the dignity that is so rightfully ours. This country has not always been kind to Black people, but we don't hate still. Thank God Barack Obama has spread love and hope, not hatred and division. A Black man has reversed the curse on America and we should all be thankful.

Ed, Santa Fe NM   July 25th, 2008 9:26 am ET

Now Obama has more foreign "experience" than the self-bloated Hillary ever had.

And all McBush can do is whine and sulk because Obama got all the press coverage while he sat at home and played the VP game and continued to get the facts wrong.

Bravo, Obama!

MoveOn   July 25th, 2008 9:26 am ET

I'm surprised that Obama wasn't on the Today Show this morning claiming that the 100,000 people there were to listen to him. (Oh, I forgot.... Katie Curic isn't on the Today Show any more...).

His PR folks missed another opportunity where there was a crowd for someone else (another rock concert) to claim that they were there to see Obama.

While he was trying to claim "World experience" by taking a week's vacation, John McCain was here, with the whole U.S. as his audience.

Vote Experience, Truth and Depth. Vote for John.

Mike   July 25th, 2008 9:26 am ET

Maybe Obama can have a concert er um speach in Chicago. Might I suggest Madonna. Her tickets are real expensive and I don't wanna pay for them.....

A Recovering Republican   July 25th, 2008 9:26 am ET

So there was a free concert that drew thousands - how does that explain all the American flags? That they were there has little to do that they showed up at the speech. Is he a "rock" star? Would that hurt to have a widely popular president back for a change? Regardless of why people have a positive opinion, isn't it better they like us rather than hate us? Inspirational leadership isn't a bad thing. A good inspirational leader can build a very effective and pragmatic team to advise him and he can than use his inspirational skills and his speaking skills to lead us to his vision.

Even is McCain is more experienced (which is questionable) will he be able to inspire us to new horizons or will he just become another one who forces his will on us because he can't lead?

10 years sober

I HEARD BARACK OBAMA IN BERLIN YESTERDY1

(Please Americans, read his speech from the beginning to the end!)

I think that CNN comments are very sober.

I heard a vision for a better world, not only for the USA
but for everyone.

CNN comment that it was'nt about isseus!

IT WAS A VISION, A BLUE PRINT FOR THE FUTURE!!!!!!!!!!

Every issue must fit in that blue print and we realy have
a great future ahead, together.

What Americans do you want more??

Respect from the whole world, a President who is already
loved more than JFK.

Wake up America, this is your chance for change!

Obama sure touched my hart but surely also my mind because
I know he is on the good side of life and a natural leader..
Yesterday I was very happy and very emotional, the same
emotion as I felt by the release of Nelson Mandela.
Barack has his smile and his hart, his wisdom and his swing.

Some of your people call him a empty suite still
He is a gift from heaven for your nation and our planet.

Americans unite and be proud of your next President,
Barack Hussein Obama.

With love from the Netherlands

Europe for Barack Obama.

Amy   July 25th, 2008 9:25 am ET

While McCain talks war and division, Obama has figured out that we need to be working together with our allies around the world to solve our global, security, energy and financial problems. Let's face it, thanks to the Bush administration, we are no longer a moral leader in the world, a financial leader, a military leader, or a leader of industry. To survive and thrive, and restore our standing in the world, we need to work with others. Obama understands that, McCain doesn't.

East Coast Bum   July 25th, 2008 9:25 am ET

For the past 2 weeks Mcwar....opps that makes people mad, I mean MINI-ME(McBush) has said noting about his ideas for solving our countries problems. He has attack Obama at every turn. Just goes to show that he has NOTING to offer us, but more of that "washington experience" that has gotton us where we are today. John is just a carrer man for the GOP. When he gets his butt handed to him this NOV, he will go back to the senate and see if he can out live Senator Byrd from WV. Kinda of like "Mermaid man and Barinacle Boy"!!

Obama seems more interested in leading the world than leading the United States. We may live in a global village but we are still a sovereign country and should remain so. I think Obama would sell out this country in a heartbeat.

After yesterday I think we should start calling Barak Obama the presumptuous democratic presidential nominee. Doesn't he realize that the EU was formed to create a competitor to the economic power of the United States. The Europeans want to be #1 again, I don't know how much they will help us with our problems. Our solution is taking personal responsibility for our problems instead of government bailouts and programs.

RealityKing   July 25th, 2008 9:23 am ET

This life long Republican Mom of 3 has been very impressed by Barack and will be voting for him.

JC   July 25th, 2008 9:22 am ET

Obama did make a fairly big gaffe during his speech in Germany. Europeans view the commitment in Afghanistan like Americans view the commitment in Iraq – they want absolutely nothing to do with it. As for non-English speakers at the speech – a majority of Germans are fluent (or at least capable) in English. The relative quietness from the 200,000 crowd was surprising, but there are probably a few reasons for it. 1) The speech just wasn't that good. Compared to other speeches Obama has given, it was probably a little below average. 2) Some of the things he discussed are controversial to Europeans (like Afghanistan). 3) The speech clearly wasn't intended to a German audience – it was intended for the American audience back home.

As for Germans waving American flags – I really doubt any of the people in the audience with an American flag were German. Most likely they were Americans. There are something like 50,000 US service members stationed in Europe. I imagine the US flag-waving people were 1) US ex-pats living in Germany, 2) US service members or state department personnel in Germany, 3) US tourists in Germany, 4) People travelling with the Obama campaign. I ived in Germany for 3 years – to think that a bunch of Germans were waiving the American flag is incredibly naive.

Annette, Washington, DC   July 25th, 2008 9:21 am ET

The McCain camp can't have it both ways. First he lacks foreign policy experience, now is he acting like the president? Obama has said before, which I agree, that we need to restore our standing in our allied countries. Whether Obama wins or not. That restoration needs to take place, if we think we are an island to ourselves that thinking is absurb, our economic and national security going forward depends on our relationships with our allies abroad. Bush 2 spoke of the coalition of the willing during the invasion of Iraq, I challenge some of the bloggers to go find out who made up the majority of countries in that coalition. America is beautiful and Obama expressed that beauty not by walking into a german resturant in Ohio, but speaking to our neighbors abroad to secure our independence and way of life, that we so enjoy such as McCain walking into a german resturant in the US and our standing and uniting world peace and unity which to me sound like the central theme of his speech.

Matt   July 25th, 2008 9:20 am ET

What has Obama accomplished to make him the best man for the presidential Job. I bet nobody here can name one accomplishment that makes Obama qualified to be president.

J.S.   July 25th, 2008 9:20 am ET

He went to Europe and the Middle East to gain press coverage for the Election and to try to make people think he is already the President. Us Bible thumping, gun toteing Americans aren't near as ignorant as some people think...Wish someone at the DMC would throw Hillalry's name back into the ring–Wouldn't that be a HOOT.

Terry   July 25th, 2008 9:20 am ET

Obama should find calculations of the hundreds upon hundreds of billions (even a trillion perhaps?) of dollars spent on the war in Iraq, and pound that dollar figure into the minds of the American public–money that could have been spent to keep the American economy on the up. That dollar figure is the perfect symbol for the complete and utter failure of the Republican controlled executive branch, and it will be exactly the same if McCain wins the White House. That would certainly spell disaster. To think of Republicans in control for another four years turns my stomach.

Steve R   July 25th, 2008 9:19 am ET

I wonder if the concert before the speech, the free beer and food had anything to do with the turnout. This sums it up. He has a lot of world experience and he should be President. I visited DisneyLand last month and I spoke to a lot of the workers and the visitors there. Based on my experience now, I am a shoe in for the Disney CEO position now.

In this country, if you want a 100k salaried job you need to have some serious experience, accomplishments, and skills. I ask any Obama supporter – What has he done that makes him qualified to be president? He hasnt done anything and he hasnt accomplished anything(aside getting elected senator). Name one thing he has done as senator that makes you believe he could not only be a good president but get anything accomplished at all – and now you want to hand him the highest job in the country – or the world for that matter.

So, meeting with foreign heads of state to create the impression that one understands the intricacies of foreign policy, qualifies anyone, including Senator Obama, to be POTUS? I believe this his first event on the world stage. Seems like Obama is trying to make it seem like the whole world is somehow with him. Well, if Obama should become POTUS, he will quickly learn that relationships with other countries and dealing with world crisis in so many nations, is not an easy thing. I wonder how he will tout change we can believe when his idea of diplomacy is delaing with countries such as Iran and I quote "without any pre-conditions." Naive, very naive, but the press and the media will buy it, as they already have. So sad for the US.

Instead of making enemies and saber-rattling like george w and his henchman, he knows the way to improve relations can be done on many fronts such as diplomacy and sanctions.

Instead of carelessly lying and deceiving our way into an illegal war, Sen Obama can be trusted with the safety of all Americans and our troops.

The Republican attack machine is constantly on it–if Obama wasn't well received, he would not be "presidential", because he attracted media and German attention, he was "inappropriate". They have no message so all they do is trash Obama. Unite!! Get these Republicans out of office!!

Obama 08   July 25th, 2008 9:04 am ET

He looks and sounds very presidential. It's wonderful to see 200,000 Germans waving American flags as opposed to having seen our current president burned in effigy in places all over the world. Obama can help our country regain our status all over the world.

How will not spending money we don;t have in Iraq to spend money we don't have on tax cuts to create a bigger loss in tax revenue help?

Anybody that lives in this economy knows you can't spend what you don't have.

"He captured their hearts but not their minds"

Well, it's just the same for him all over the world then isn't it? They listened to the words and considered the future actions and didn't base their final opinion solely on feelings, emotions and *shock* dare I say hope?

The media will not choose our next President, the voters will, and we're looking at all the pieces, not just what is spoon fed to us.

Obama is right. We need to partner with other countries on so many fronts. America wil be all alone if we continue with the current policies with John McBush.

Once people find out McCains plans to go to war with everybody and stay forever, we'll definitely have a lot of friends ..........NOT

Naomi, Texas   July 25th, 2008 9:01 am ET

Love him or hate him, Obama understands the fact that the world we live in now is a global village. McCain is still stuck in the cold war years. McCain pushed Obama to go overseas, now that he has McCain hates the fact that Obama got more attention. Yes, Obama has looked really good this week. That's a fact!

It's Time   July 25th, 2008 9:00 am ET

Why do some people not realize this? Why do some people stick their head in the sand and think that America can survive on its own? We're already intertwined with almost every other nation in the world...we do need their help to get out of this mess we're in. Obama knows this, McCain knows it but won't admit it. Who do you want leading our country – someone with ideas or someone who wants to continue to dig the hole deeper and deeper...?

So for those of you who were asking "Where's the beef", it's between your teeth!!!! And by the way it turns out that it's pork and the republicans have been spending it by the barrel for the last 7 years.
