Obama sidesteps Bush criticism

Obama and Sarkozy held a press conference Friday.
Obama and Sarkozy held a press conference Friday.

PARIS, France (CNN) - Sen. Barack Obama said Friday he was avoiding criticizing President Bush on his trip through Europe.

Speaking to reporters, the Democratic presidential candidate cited a tradition that "you don't criticize a sitting president while overseas," adding that "it's very important" that U.S. foreign policy is presented "in one voice."

"I can say affirmatively an effective U.S. foreign policy will be based on our ability not only to project power, but also to listen and to build consensus. And the goal of an Obama administration in foreign policy would be, obviously to act on behalf of the interests of the security of the United States, but also to listen to our allies," he said.

I believe Obama was very respectful of George W. Bush. Obviously, he disagrees with the Bush policies but respected the tradition not to criticize a sitting U.S. president overseas. I guess all of you ANTI-Obama people will not even give him credit for that.

Way to build your foreign cred, Obama. At least he's developing good ties with a multitude of countries. It's the first step towards unity!

Why is everything Obama does is negative?
He can probably donate money to charity and he will get criticized.

Not only is Barack right for sidestepping a chance to criticize Bush on foreign soil, he did so knowing that just a month ago Bush did not do the same. Remember?

    Barack is the real deal.

And exactly that position: to listen and build consensus with the allies, is the reason he is so well-liked here in Europe.

The american people seem to think that we dislike them. They are wrong, we like and respect the americans, we just disagreed with the current administration on many topics and their way of handling certain issues.

Obama's pleasant ways will go a long way to secure more cooperation on vital issues. At last a presidential candidate that not only understands that the US cannot do it all alone, but actually seems to accept that we eruopeans might have actually have somethings o contribute as well besides an army and weapons.

And the reason he WILL NOT get my vote is he is too concerned with foreign countries and not enough concern for the USA. He has no business going to the heads of state. Going to Military bases is one thing but speaking in front of their countrymen regarding our problems is another issue. It is time to take care of the American people first not last.

I don't get it. McCain CHALLENGED him to go to Iraq and Afghanistan and he went. Is this just because he was so well received and the trip was successful? And they also criticized his foreign relationships ability and said he'd not be able to do well because he had none. Well, he's done GREAT! He did what THEY ask; now they want to try to hold it against him for meeting their challenge. That is pathetic, to say the least.

    Obama '08!!

I thought Sen. Obama's response was very presidential..He has been very careful on this trip. While Sen. McCain keeps making gaffs at home. ...

That is taking the high road to newer heights Barrack.
    Kudos to you.

While Bush made snide remarks towards him in Israel (obviously for his buddy McCain) Barrack refuse to be taken to that low level politics. And this is why he has the respect of his countrymen (most of us who are not blind) and the rest of the world. That spells integrity.

Can November come any sooner please?
