Sarkozy called the Democratic nomination for Obama.
Sarkozy called the Democratic nomination for Obama.

(CNN) – Before Barack Obama arrived in Paris, French President Nicolas Sarkozy was already cozying up to the presumptive Democratic nominee.

“Obama? He’s my buddy,” Sarkozy told French newspaper Le Figaro in an interview first noted by Politco.

“Unlike my diplomatic advisors, I never believed in Hillary Clinton’s chances,” he added, “I always said Obama would be nominated.”

The article says the two first met when Sarkozy visited Washington in 2006 as France’s Minister of the Interior and he has “very good memories” of the encounter.

John McCain visited the Elysee Palace in March after locking up his party’s nomination and often speaks highly of the conservative pro-American French president on the campaign trail.

Sarkozy has not endorsed either candidate but says that an Obama victory would “validate” his efforts to bring the two countries closer together. The pair are meeting for an hour and then will address the press. Le Figaro points out that Sarkozy’s office is trying to keep the visit relatively low-key.

Just what I want a President who is best friends with a socialist. Next thing you know OB will want the US to join the EU. If folks think the Europeans are so great they ought to just pick up and move over ther with them.

Joe in NJ   July 25th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

I am not going to vote for a President based on who the world wants us to elect. I am going to vote for the person who I believe will benefit America the most, and I'm still not sure who that is.

Additional note: THE WORSE IS STILL TO COME
USA citizens, do you really think you will overcome this all on your own in this globalized? You must be kidding. Please try a look over your border lines and make yourself familiar with the rest of the world. The prize for food, gas, your home made war, will keep on rising. Did you listen today to the news regarding the mortgage crisis? You have lived for to long in your "splendid isolation"

I love my country and am a disabled vet who proudly served in desert storm. We seem to forget that we are basiclly the youngest country out there, virtually a baby when compared to the long history of other countries. Have we not learned anything. If we want to continue being the great force that we are we better greatly improve in the area of diplomacy. We have big economic problems here but as "no man is an island" no one country is the world. We need allies. Anyone who thinks we can take on the rest of the world alone is nieve.

You are always on the blog spewing ignorance. I guess because you don't have an intelligent thought in your mind. But please…for once can you at least pretend that you have an intelligent thought in your mind. You don't have to like Obama. However, there are other ways of express your dislike without appearing ignorant. You repuation on the blog is that you are ignorant, unintelligent and racist.

Funny. The Irish don't like Sarkozy and McCain is battling Obama for the Presidency. Sort of a Freedom vs. Socialism battle on both ends.

Barack the Vote   July 25th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

Ditto, Joe! I have 0% confidence that McCain could ever accomplish what Obama has done for US foreign relations in this one week. This would be a great poll question - wouldn't it?

tedious898   July 25th, 2008 2:38 pm ET

I've been trying to figure out how the delapidated campaign of McCain could be this close in the polls. Its obvious!

The world loves Obama but the powerful and hate filled racists are totally upset about his candidacy.

I forgot how really backwards america still is. For a while there I thought the character of one's heart as opposed to the color of their skin is what was most important. How wrong I've been.

Come on Barack Obama haters - let it fly. Show everyone how much you despise the good Senator from Illinois.

Obama. Educated by the white man and now after he learned and did the right thing the American way he is hated more by them. All our lives we are told to stay in school and out of trouble and all doors will be open to you. Take care of your family and pay your bills and everything will be ok. Well we have a man in Obama that has done all of the above and he is hated by many Americans. WHY??? If he was White and the world had the same view of him as it does right now he would be the greatest man alive but just because he is black he is called every hate filled name in the book. They say "who does he think he is" and all sorts of things about him. In other words they are thinking doesn't that "N" know his place. I will answer thay for you and the answer is YES he does and his place is the place that he is in right now running for the office of the President Of the United States.
**************************************************
I hate to admit it…but your blog is right on the money. Couldn't have said it better myself.

Why do so many hate Barack? Just because of his color. He doesn't have the right to be president of these United States.

I agree with you 100%. McCain Supporters and the Obama haters have nothing good to say, so they bash Obama out of fear that he's much better than their candidate and he's much more presenditial than the losser we have in the oval office now. Great job Mr. Obama our next President Of The United States.

Chuck   July 25th, 2008 2:30 pm ET

Sure is funny to see how all the McCain supporters can do is criticize and bash Obama and not have a single positive thing to say about McCain. If you go back and read most of the comments on the CNN blogs you will find many comments from Obama supporters that note why they support Obama. When you read the comments from the McCain supporters the majority of their comments say nothing as to why they support McCain because they are too busy criticzing or bashing Obama. I guess when you don't have a clue why you support someone because there is frankly nothing worth supporting I suppose your only option is to then attack and criticize the opponent.

DA   July 25th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

Thank you Maxwell and others' I know are Christians on this blog,

Your comments are so eloquently put. It is so amazing to me the majority of Christians in the U.S. spawn so much hate/evil, let's be sure to point out Hannity/Fox News who continues spreading this racism and hatred. Often times I watch the mannerism of these mean spirited so called human beings and pray to God to bless them with goodness and mercy. I don't hate, and I truly believe the day will come when all men will bow down before their heavenly Father.

I am so looking forward to a change in this country. War is evil - there is no reason to go to war aside from protecting your country. To go to war to look for the so-called millions of dollars Saddam supposely hid or the oil - is pure evil. To put the lives of our men and women on the line for that is evil.

I'm sure if McCain's trip had been as sucessful, that would have been viewed by his people as a great thing. What ever happened to the positive campaign he said he was going to run? He never gives us any solutions, just criticism of Obama. McCain is such a hypocrite.

Obama has apparently been vetted. And we know there are no cigars and strange women, his children love him, he's been a community activist instead of a rich dollar lawyer. He's been married to the same woman, other countries like him, millions of Americans love him, and still, people like to criticize and belittle him. This election year has been very negative, yet Obama tries to stick to the issues and not denigrate his opponent (most of the time). I would like to think that it is not race related. But I don't know. I think he would be a great President.

I wish folks would read their post to understand how we sound. We upset with Obama because he is getting respect for the foreign leaders. Of course, we are because many have come to believe it is the American Way or the HIGHWAY. We used to be proud of MADE IN THE USA- NOW WE DON'T MAKE ANYTHING OR OWN ANYTHING.

Whether you are a Democrat, Independent or Republican. It is going to take a man who shows judgement and is ready to weather the storm to get us back on track. The best candidate is the one talking about his plans and telling us we need to get it together. Not some one criticizing the other person and questioning their judgement.

"Love my USA" you need to get off of that "Typical White Person" statement. Sure, not vote the right person based on a single inocuous statement. Never mind the fact that he was raised by the white side of his family.

What about the fact that McCain has said numerous times that he didn't even love this country until he was captured during the Vietnam Conflict. No one ever mentions that.

JAY   July 25th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

I am confused on why people hate on a person who wants to help the world come together. I know why but rather not speak on it. All I have to is if he was a different canidate with the same views then it would be a great man. He don't talk of war, and he is a anti-crist and everything else. If you talk of world people you are the devil, we been in misery so long that it is a shock to see a man getting praise over seas and greeted with open arms. He had 200.000 people at a speech yesterday. But you turn on the news they talk about his lack of experience, for someone who don't have it he got the ears of many people.

William   July 25th, 2008 1:58 pm ET

quote from "The Great Debaters"

Dnt have an opinion on either candidate but that pretty sums it up. Mc Cain simply does not exist. I have no idea what foreign policy and all that means. Who would I go for? Person that seems to want to solve my problem and has alot of friends who can help him help me. Like someone said already. Mc Cain is tooooooo old, can't teach an old dog new tricks. Guys are building nukes and all this tech stuff and he doesn't know how to use a computer? It seems like his advisors would be running the country.

Advisor to Mc Cain," Mouse stopped working, can't click anything." Mc Cain," Go Petco, buy a bigger one."

The people hating Obama on here remind me so much of the just ended democratic primary season where any American who chose Obama over Hillary was either unpatriotic, a kool-aid drinker, inexperienced, as stupid as Obama or all of the above.

So I see the same pattern extending to Leaders of other nations who seem to like Obama a lot…do I see some trouble for our old Senator from Arizona, you bet!

To see Obama is to LOVE Obama, period!
Why? Forget the good looks for a minute… If you hate him, try hard and go with a positive mind and then listen to how he articulates his vision and presents himself…then you too will soon begin to see why HE IS THE ONE!

Let's see, in the United States we have: A housing slump, rising unemployment, rising gas prices, rising food costs, a slump in retail sales, a broken infrastructure nationwide, a healthcare crisis, homeless veterans, homeless children, an unstable stock market, failed banks, a mortgage crisis and so much more. While Obama is enjoying photo ops in the Middle East, who is addressing the problems back home? The Obama trip was supposed to be a fact finding mission. Instead, he upstaged our president and showed a level of arrogance that was incomprehensible. He can stand on the other end of a teleprompter, but he can't hold press conferences where he is asked more than one question at a time. Change has to come gradually with intelligence and humility. The spotlight needs to shine on the challenges of the American people not on Barack Obama.

What has Obama accomplished to make him the best man for the presidential Job. I bet nobody here can name one accomplishment that makes Obama qualified to be president.

===================================================

He has been in public service for more than 10 years(8 in Illinois Senate)

He has shown superior judgment when it mattered most at a time McCain has been dead wrong.

Obama is running a better campaign than the so called experienced McCain.

Just 3 years in the US senate and hes running for president and right now he is WINNING. McCain has been in the US senate for 25 years and he`s now running for president. Now who has better judgment?

Yes McCain has more experience but he`s offering the wrong policies both domestic and foreign. Dont forget he agreed with Bush` failed policies 95% of the time.

CNN please post this.

To E.B. Stein look for the answer to your question on foxnews site:
"Sarkozy offered considerably less to Obama’s Republican rival, John McCain during a March visit to Paris. After 45 minutes of talks, McCain was left on his own, fielding questions from reporters in the courtyard of the Elysee."

Brian - Trinidad   July 25th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Sarkozy, isn't he the guy who's claim to fame as an elected European is that he made out in public with some bimbo, whom he then married, and they continue to make out for the cameras. A real role model for Obama.

Bob K   July 25th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

Just to get a few things straight here:
- MCCain has met with many leaders and he has never been president
- Sarkozy is NOT a Socialist. he is from one of the French right-wing parties (unless all Europeans are Socialists/Communists … but only McCain voters believe that). But it is not surprising that MCainers don't know aquat about other countries …. right in line with McWar!

Why????   July 25th, 2008 1:47 pm ET

I'm glad they like Obama then hate him let some of us do. A good relationship with others (nations) will go a long way.

Now to the entire name calling supporters, whether you are an Obama or McCain supporter -listen up. I know what you are going through. When you were in school other students would tease you and call you by other names; so that is why you hate so much. But haven’t you grown up by now? Look at yourself in the mirror; I know the hair on your head is as white as snow; just like all the wrinkles on your hand. My God, that should tell you something. Most of you have kids yourself and should try to relate to what they are going through in school. How can you teach them when you are still on their level? Wise up people.

- Maliki whom Bush installed endorses Obama's plan for Iraq
- Merkel another conservative and German chancellor endorses his world vision and comments favorably to his demands for more troops to Afganistan.
- Sarkozy, france's conservative president and Bush friend endorses Obama's American-Europe vision (that could actually help us economically and militarily).
- The Israeli and Palestinian leaders were also both eager to work with him even though he criticized terror attacks for Palestinia and violating building of new settlements from Israel but gave both sides an incentive to build peace on.

And to my Right Wingers: keep trash talking OBAMA…I think it might be helping him! Funny how dems have nothing much to say about McCain….how about you guys make up a story about your candidate and see if that helps his popularity! LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

joe   July 25th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

He is my buddy too…and of all those that dream of a peacefull world. If this man can make people love one another …Europe falling in love with America…then he had already achieved what many leaders dream of, then he had healed the wound that is bush…made the whole world hate America…and all this before his first day in office

FOR GRIFF…satan brings nothing good but hatred, fear and wars and this best describe the alternative you have other than OBAMA

LOVE MY USA…you were and still the old fashioned white person , not of our generation…cause every wall that separate us…race, religion, tribe, country e t c will come down in our generation

I am also sorry that you two have not truly told American why you outrightly hate Obama. Say what you like, real independent thinker can see through you.

it really is sad commentary about American voters when we hear comments like satanist, messiah, elitist, arrogant, racist, feminist. It really accentuates just how far we have fallen. Compared the articulate observations from foreign contributors to this blog, many here seem ignorant and childish.

Obama is neither Satan, the Messiah, an elitist, arrogant, racist, nor a feminist. He is simply a well spoken, articulate leader.

You could probably argue that it is the arrogance and elitism of the current administration that has caused so much of the world against the U.S.

That is why Obama is being received so well around the world.

That is one reason why he is the best candidate for President.

Independent-woman-4-Obama - you are so right when you say that if Jesus was walking among us today the right wing would crucify him again because they don't quite understand what he would do. He would be trying to feed the hungry, he would be trying to pull people out of the bondage of poverty, he definitely wouldn't be out there advocating for the to 1% rich people to make more while the poor get poorer,

What makes the right so christian then? Seems to me like the Democrats have the concept right.

Since when did changing your mind about something become a BAD thing?

Texun   July 25th, 2008 1:34 pm ET

It is just a bit surprising that the prime ministers of both German and France have cozied up to Obama so readily. They are both from the conservative side of politics in their respective countries, despite the uninformed blather of some of the contributors on this thread. Perhaps it isn't so surprising after all; they've seen W waste this country, its world standing, its military, its economy, to the detriment of the free world. McCain promises to be even more ignorant on economic issues and looks to a long-term occupation of Iraq. Given the choice, world leaders would probably have preferred Mike Gravel to McCain or Bush.

Amazing how a message of hope and change galvinizes people and brings them together, compared to the standard message of fear and hatred. So many of you want to give into your weakness of fear, and believe what you are told and show it by responding the the blackest part of your heart. Not putting Bush down on his trip, but Bush over in Israel putting down a setting Senator, McSenile putting down a setting Senator plus a fellow member that McSenile claims to reach across the Isle too.( I guess we know now that is to stab them in the back0 while he was in Canada making his policy speech. Yet what do we have here. Such hateful comments about both Barack Obama and the French. You are all too sad for words. Try getting a life instead of shutting yourselves up in your trailers. Why are you so bitter and angry. Could it be that you have been screwed by the Bush administration for the past 7+ years but can't bring yourself to vote for a black man. Global issues are terrorism, fair trade, international peacekeeping, AIDS and many other issues. George W. Bush has hurt our the U.S. relations with the rest of the world. McCain is following similar policies. A change is needed. International cooperation needs and restoring U.S. standing in the world is keep. If not, then more U.S troops are going to be in wars where the U.S. will go it alone and cost the U.S. trillions of dollars. A change in U.S. policy is needs. Obama will bring that CHANGE

I don't understand how some of you people on here can be so closed minded. You close your minds to anything that does not say AMERICA, as if America was founded on an isolationist foundation. America was established on the foundation of immigration and everytime something is mentioned that deosn't say America or someone disagrees with what you think should be America, you start your silly fear tactics. It will not work this time. I'm praying that God will control the outcome of this election (Yes, a praying Democrat). My hopes are that some of the people on this blog and around this country would understand that this is now the America of 1812 or 1600 or of 1950. We have evolved, and if we continue to reject factions of our own being, like Muslims, gays, and immigrants, we will only implode. This country has a great need to be more reconciliatory and stop rejecting people who are either not like them or who do not agree with them.

NO, I don't know the man personally but I know they did not support us after 911 and wanted us to do targeted attacks against afghanistan. Believe it or not in France he is considered a conservative. Does that tell you how far left the French are. After twenty years in the military and mulitiple tours in europe I can tell you they are not worth the money we waste on them in NATO. They are nothing but a bunch of parasities letting the U.S. support them millitarily. I have been there for more than a two week vacation and I don't care to be a socialist. I had rather live in the United States poor than be a socialist with my life and dreams dictated to me .

Justin, Ohio   July 25th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

I personally could care less what other countries think about Obama. Last time I checked, Europe wasn't really known for their great choices in leaders. Stop talking about global government and stick to what you're going to do for the United States.. you know, the people that are actually voting to see whether or not you're elected. Also, if Europe is so great, why does everyone want to come to America? Because it's the land of the free. But it's increasingly becoming socialized like the failed policies of Europe.

They Don't Hate Us for our Success   July 25th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

"they are envious of our ability to succeed, thats why the hate us"

*****

First of all, anyone looking at today's American economy has nothing to be envious about…yes, we have our freedoms, but just to let you in on a little secret…Europe does as well…and if a European citizan wants to start his or her own business, it doesn't cost the equivalent of $1500 a month just to pay for health insurance for their families. Many Americans don't have the same luxury and feel trapped in their jobs for this reason alone…unless, of course, they get laid off, which is happening more and more these days…something other country's envy, right?

Secondly, do the French really hate us because of our ability to succeed? I would think that they might dislike our current "we're better than you" mentality that finds its way into many nonsensical blog posts.

Shari, NY   July 25th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Bon jour, France!

Congratulations to Sen. Obama for displaying tact and excellent diplomatic skills! Whatever the outcome of the November election, it will be heartening to remember that an American politician was warmly received in Europe for a change. It will be even better if the momentum can be kept.

As this mission winds down, credit should be given to Sen. McCain without whose help (criticism) these trips might not have taken place - and you can take this anyway you want to. As to the Pentagon's taboo on his visit to troops in Germany - even the blind an see through that move.

Since the Republicans take great pride in bashing France, Sarkozy's comment isn't surprising. When Republicans think changing the name of French fries to "Freedom Fries" is meaningful legislation, why would anyone be surprised that the French hate Republicans.

Joe   July 25th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Well, now that Obama has proved to all and sundry that he is in touch with foreign policy, aligned with world leaders and loved by citizens of the world, the Obama haters will have to find a new excuse not to like him. I think it will go something like this: 'He's too connected with the outside world, that's not good for America'. Here it comes, from one extreme to another.

Beverly, NYC   July 25th, 2008 1:05 pm ET

Do your thing Obama!!! Nice to see our allies still believe in the US given our collective mis-judgement of the past 7 1/2 years. The Obama haters on this blog can't see past their racist noses. They would rather be stuck with orage and red alerts, wars, foreclosures, layoffs, deeper recession etc. for the next 4 years rather than elect a black president, while believing they are not racist. Thankfully not everyone is that selfish.

The world sees a great leader, yet many are still tied up in party loyalty. That is what is wrong with our country, vote for the person and not the party. In order to have world peace, we must first have a world leader, and Barack Obama is that person. I feel very saddened that John McCain is till playing the Washington Game and the abuse and whinning and downright lies about another presidential contender, is totally disgusting. He is still reliving the VietNam war in his little tiny brain, and it makes him look even more feeble minded than he already is. You do not see Barack Obama coming out every day critizing what John McCain is doing or saying. This is worse than Kindergarten College! He needs to get out there and sell himself, instead of watching Obama's every move. I realize he is trying to do his best, but there is a place to stop this ridicule and take control of yourself and not demean another campaigns motives. Change your course McCain, or you will be continually shamed and dishonored for your tactics.

Why would he want McCain to win? McCain is always denigrating the French.

Another example of how Obama would change the world view of America.

So the President of France and the people of Germany seem pretty happy with Obama. I love how the right will try to spin this as a BAD thing. Yeah, it would really suck if the world liked and respected our leader for a change.

Isn't it amazing how well recieved and respected Obama is world wide, yet those of us Americans who do support Obama are referred to as crazy by PUMA, Republicans, Independents and so-called acclaimed Dems? There must be something to him if he draws this much support outside of the U.S. as well. Empty suit and teleprompter speaker not.

To "not an obamabot":

In reference to your statements regarding Europeans, particularly "they are envious of our ability to succeed"

Do you want to back that up with some facts? How exactly have we been succeeding in the last 8 years?

I'll be waiting for your further words of wisdom…

for a while I imagine.

Well, Hillary and McCain……..French President Nicolas Sarkozy has a new "buddy." That's politics.

Obama has done a beautiful job on his overseas trip. The question before he left was will he be able to work and forge relationships with foreign leaders. The answer, YES!!!!

Now don't be mad if you don't like the answer, deal with it.

Obama is the man….

Nate Hussein   July 25th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

@Olivia
"McCain is being disrespected by foreign leaders that have bought into the hype that is barack obama."

…and it's Obama's fault that these leaders dislike/distrust the republicans? You're right…..

I WISH……FERVENTLY…. THAT OBAMA WINS IN NOV AND TAKES CARE OF ALL THIS NONSENSE THAT IS GOING ON.

I sure wish all you crazy liberals would refrain from insulting John McCain. You may not agree with his policies but this is one of the few political figures that deserves respect. Believe me calling a man that has served his country the way this man has a loser doesn't help your cause it makes you sound like an idiot!

Sean   July 25th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Olivia, how is it that everyone in the world is so stupid that, as you've said, they've all done nothing more than "bought the hype"? Obama goes on a trip around the planet, being extremely well-received everywhere, and it's somehow NOT evidence to you that he'd be effective in rebuilding foreign relations. Instead, you believe that everyone aside from you and your ilk here are just stupid and have simply "bought the hype".

How dangerously delusional of you.
