Portman joined up with McCain unexpectedly Thursday.

(CNN) — Another day, another round of buzz surrounding a potential vice presidential candidate.

This time it's former Bush administration official and former Ohio Rep. Rob Portman, who made an unscheduled appearance aboard John McCain's Straight Talk Express Thursday afternoon. McCain and Portman are headed to Columbus, Ohio where the Arizona senator will participate in a town hall event with biking legend Lance Armstrong. (Portman will not be speaking at the event, CNN's Tasha Diakides reports.)

Portman, who served as Director of the Office of Management and Budget from 2006-07, has long been considered a top pick for VP. In addition to his economic credentials — something many political observers believe McCain's ticket desperately needs — Portman remains a popular figure in his home state of Ohio, the perennial presidential battleground that is once again expected to play a key role this cycle.

CNN's Political Market: Portman's VP stock on the rise

Portman represented Ohio's conservative 2nd district for 12 years, and could help shore up conservative support and working class voters there. Barack Obama lost to Hillary Clinton in Ohio by nearly 10 points in the Democratic primary — largely due to a lack of support from working class Democrats — though recent polls show the Illinois senator now holds a slight lead over McCain in the Buckeye State.

But it remains unclear just how high up on the VP list Portman is — Republicans may be wary of putting a former Bush administration official on the ticket, and he remains relatively unknown on the national scene.

And there's always the question of whether Portman is at all interested in the job. The former congressman appeared to suggest last month he was not.

Watch: Portman explain why he would say no to being VP

“Well, you know, I’m happy to be home,” he told CNN's Peter Hamby. “I commuted between Washington and Ohio where we are now for 15 years, and about nine months, so I made the decision to come home and it’s been great. I’ve got three teenagers, so I’m not looking for a way back to Washington right now."

“I love public service,” he added. “I want to help him. I think he’s the right person to lead the country at this critical time, but I’m not interested in going back to D.C. right now.”

I thought people have been saying on both sides that the VP pick should be who the candidates trust, who they feel can run the country should the unthinkable happen, etc, not becuase they can potentially deliver a disputed state.

This article seems to suggest that in Portman, it would give McCain economic credentials. Why would he need someone else to give him that. Shouldn't he have that on his own?

Come CNN, just let the candidates pick their running mate and let it go.

Bad rock made a fool of himself in Germany yesterday. I heard the speech and it was awful. A lot of good feeling words but no substance.

He didn't talk about the price of gas and drilling for new oil. He didn't talk about NAFTA. He didn't talk about IRAN and the danger it gives the world. I didn't hear him address his increase in our taxes. He didn't mention his new "tax us" programs. I didn't hear him talking solutions for the poor people, he just pointed out there are poor people.

This is the fluff and cotton candy speaker. Hey candy man how are you today? Lots of sweetness but no substance.

Hello! Bad Rock we have had poor people from day one. My advice for them is to pull up their socks and go to work.

McCains VP choice may make the difference between who wins this election. A strong VP can get McCain the 4/5% he needs to win. This should be a runnaway for the Dems, why isn't it? Obama is a good speaker and nothing else. He reminds me of the Peter Principal at work.

Presumptive Nominee John McCain is meeting the Dali Lama tomorrow to offer him the Vice Presidents Position. In a leaked statement from the press office of the Dali Lama His Holiness said "John McCain who???"

nola   July 25th, 2008 10:00 am ET

I cannot believe that John McCain, a 70+ year old man, who has been actively involved in the US Gov – is crying like a little three year old – who cannot get his way. He has had a week to present to the American people he plans for addressing the economic issues that each American family is haveing to deal with. Instead he has wasted this time worrying about what Senator Obama has said.

I think that elected McCain as the next president of this country would lead Americans down the path of suffering.

Obama is already serving our country by repairing globally all the damage caused by extended war and non-communication/no foreign relations. McCain is serving (??) our country by mocking Obama's very successful diplomatic trip – So, I take it that McCain is much more comfortable living in a world with war, no foreign relations, and the US isolated from the global economy. How backwards can you get????

The smart thing to do for John McCain is to pick a woman as his running mate.
That way, he has got a pretty good chance of picking up the dissaffected HRC voters and winning in November.

All of this while McCain just attacks, attacks, and attacks more. You want to talk about an empty suit. McCain has offered no solutions for over a week now, he has just been a jealous attack dog. He has been boring and has had no real substance at all. He has complained he isn't getting fair media coverage but who wants to cover a grumpy old attack dog? Obama is a great patriot and scholar while McCain is a grumpy war monger. This has been proven this last week.

These McCain attack dogs who spout nothing but nonsense are the same people spreading those horrible Muslim lies about Obama. They know their only chance is to make up lies and hope enough idiots believe them.

Obama couldnt have even stepped foot in Iraq if it wasnt for McCain's surge, its too bad he is so lame to admit it. Europe doesnt elect our president, America does! McCain is making gains in the polls because Americans are bright enough to understand whats going on. Mr. "Hollywood liberal pleaser" needs to get off his high horse and deal with the common man. Why won't the press just give it up. Every time some one meets with McCain there has to be this guessing game and hypothetical analysis of what someone will or will not bring. McCain is stringing all of you alone. I can see him sitting with his team, laughing as they figure out who will next make an "unscheduled" visit as he campaigns in there district, state, or panders to their base. Here it goes: McCain's team: Gee who can we get to visit next that will drive this news cycle of empty speculation so we can get some free press to counter Obama"

Suckers all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who cares about McCain's VP pick, with all of his gaffes, votes against women's rights, the viagara moment, mixing up countries, naming non existent countries and having the surge facts wrong, the only reason he is still close to Obama in the polls, is the fact that he is white, period. You make him president and your situation at home and standing in the world will be 100 times worse. America,it seems would much prefer to at their own peril, vote for this man with all of his faults and terrible policies instead of a good decent well educated black/white bi-racial man,it's kinda funny you guys only see his skin colour, what about his heart?.Why CNN is unwilling to point out each and every one of McCain's gaffes is quite bewildering to me,you have Obama under the microscope 24/7 and McCain goes merrily along looking lost and clueless in grocery store isles. Go Figure!! we all know your game.

Gee, he's appearing with Lance Armstrong. Does that mean Armstrong is on the short list? Seems like whoever one of the candidates meets with is automatically on the short list.
Actually, Portman makes sense. He has the economic creds to shore up McCain's shortcomings there, he has congressional experience and he could swing a major battleground state. Plus, he's neither too young nor too old. Given that he was an administration official, he probably plays well with the party insiders, too.

Bob Portman as a VP pick for McCain means almost nothing to us in the Northeast part of the state. If the election isn't tainted by the republican's Senator Obama should run away with Ohio despite the efforts of CNN and the rest of the republican party shills in the media.

Bob Indianapolis, IN   July 25th, 2008 9:20 am ET

Rob, the best way to prepare yourself for this suicide mission is to get Joe Lieberman's cliff notes for prompting John Boy and then remember- he thinks he's still fighting the war in Vietnam. We didn't win that one and he wants to win this one REAL BAD…even if it means bankrupting anyone who didn't have the foresight to marry an heiress. so uh, good luck with that!

Nick, NY   July 25th, 2008 9:20 am ET

We all know Senator McCain must be frustrated: Obama performed very well in the Middle East, Obama seemed to be in agreement with PM Nuri Al-Maliki about what the soverign government of Iraq wants, Obama was able to meet with the Afghan leadership [who he had previously criticized], Obama spoke to a cheering crowd of several thousands or hundreds of thousands in Berlin, and much more. McCain's Challenge for Obama to go to Iraq [et al] has backfired on McCain and as a result we are seeing more typical republican behavior: McCain trying to make himself look better by trying to make Obama look worse. Whether it be attacks, or distractions [such as this], this formula looks very familiar.

Connie   July 25th, 2008 9:19 am ET

Watching CNN news continued chats on what McCain has to do to beat Barach Obama does make many feel that CNN is on the DNC payroll. The question is why? One would think having one man who can build rather than destroy America's interests world wide would inspire the MSM to embrace coverage not pander to the cry baby tears of those who do get such attention.

proud army and navy mom   July 25th, 2008 9:14 am ET

cnn, how come the heading of this article doesn't say,
"Portland says no to VP for mccain?"

If it was someone even hinting that they do not want to be asked on the democratic side, your headline would scream that or worst.

Normally I would agree with you. It can be difficult to remember who was the VP, even for some fairly recent Presidents… and the losing VP's are tough trivia questions. However, considering McCain's age, health issues, and frequent (constant) mental lapses, his VP selection is VERY important.

Kevin: Agree 100%. We could go from "cringe" to "once again proud" in a nanosecond on January 20, 2008. "Cringe less often" with McCain would be settling for mediocrity. I don't want mediocre.

Donkey Party   July 25th, 2008 8:44 am ET

What a disgrace McCain, his campaign, and his supporters are. All they can do is attack Obama with lies and distorted views of reality, and never talk about any of the issues. It's all Obama did this, or Obama said that, or surge, surge, surge. Where is McCain's substance? He doesn't have any. He's not a total failure, but when he loses in November he will be.

DJ   July 25th, 2008 8:43 am ET

I think it's funny that even the CNN writer apparently thinks this is junk news. "Another day, another round of buzz surrounding a potential vice presidential candidate." First it's DEFINITELY Jindal. Then it's SURELY Pawlenty. Honestly, I take McCain's side on this. He'll announce when he announces. Who honestly cares? It's Bob Dole Part II anyway. If the Veep pick is a known commodity, they'll help him out a little and then go away. If it's not, they'll be a non-issue and disappear forever when McCain loses.

not important   July 25th, 2008 8:40 am ET

So after all McCains nickname is McBush? I mean why would McCain want anything to do with George W. Bush or Karl Rove? I guess he doesn"t care what those two did in 2000 or maybe he doesn"t remember the push polling in 2000 presidential elections?

Concerned Citizen, IN   July 25th, 2008 8:40 am ET

Bush's Management and Budget Guru??? Are you serious?

And we (the Whiners) are supposed to believe he brings economic expertise and credibility?

McCain gets scarier and scarier every time I turn on the news.

JB Boston   July 25th, 2008 8:34 am ET

I love how some crazy Obama supporters claim that CNN is being biased against Obama by trying to "steal" Obama's spotlight.

I am an Obama fan, check old posts.

Look on the right side of your computer screen. They list posts by category. It now stands Obama with 2056 stories. McCain with 1173.

Obama has almost 900 more stories (roughly people). That is the truth. So stop your complaining about CNN trying to steal Obama's media attention. You cannot argue with facts!

Brittany. LA   July 25th, 2008 8:34 am ET

As the worldwide Obamafest continues, McCain is gaining in the polls; now only down 4% which is statistically insignificant. Why?

The unfair coverage by CNN, MSNBC, etc: is creating an enormous
backlash among American whites. And these are the people who control the election.

So keep it up CNN, you'll put McCain in the White House yet.

Scott, WestChester, OH   July 25th, 2008 8:33 am ET

Rob Portman is a good man and a rising star. He may not be well-known outside this area, but he would be a solid conservative pick who would serve McCain well as the VP nominee.

Good Job CNN! Once again nothing but negative comments about McCain from people that clearly have no clue what they are saying. As I read some of the comments that people submit, It just shows how stupid America looks and CNN posts all these ridiculus comments for the world to see. We all wonder why America is not respected around the world, we make ourselves look foolish.

Praetorian, Fort Myers   July 25th, 2008 8:28 am ET

Sadly…we see the problems with the nation and GOP. Conservative leaders become complacent that because GWB was such a schmuck–it's a given a Democrat will win this election.

Too bad so many GOP fast burners–are sitting this one out in hopes of better days after Obama screws everything up–and the GOP can be more certain of a win–and lots of donations to the Republican Party.

I hope conservatives are watching and remembering. It's not O.K. if they just sit by and watch while Obama screws things up. Conservative voters expect the officials they elected to continue to pursue those ideals and that would include sustainment of the political party even during hard times. I predict this election year will be an ALL INCUMBENTS OUT election. Just like the White House our Congress needs a good flushing out too–and there are a lot of state legislators and governors who also need to be removed–post haste.

Joe Reed   July 25th, 2008 8:28 am ET

Esther   July 25th, 2008 8:28 am ET

What will they not come up with this stupid CNN – just to keep McSame in the news?! Today it is Pawlenty, tomorrow Lindhal, next Romney, next Portman. Can you imagine: CNN even brought up old news in their archives per request from McSame, about his meeting with Dalai Lima just to shore up some foreigness about him too?! If they are so jobless, why dont they write and publish stories crediting Obama with great foreign policy strength as seen in the gigantic respect around the world?…
Please, wise americans check out HuffingtonPost.com for real news and the issues we should be considering as we vote. All those hidden interviews with the candidates that CNN refuses to report are there. These are interviews very similar to the debates and answers on various issues that we all have been asking for. If Portman is the VP, how rosey would the budget numbers be? How far from realistic could these numbers become — very unrealistic and problematic for the American taxpayer and our children and grandchildren and our great-grandchildren. Can we have someone who presents several senarios that include some bad news so that we can tell our members of Congress to plan for the bad news.

We never should have lost 1 single life there..!! :(

Thats what McPain just doesn't comprehend.

Just wait and see. McBush is very smart in smear and fearing people especially his aged people. By the way where's the holiday's tax break?????? How come he jumped on to the conclusion with the drilling when he knows that this will take effect in decades, nothing to do with the gasoline cirisis now??? We have not gotten the holiday gas break yet and he inisting on drilling. Be carefull people, same old, same old, kind of politics tactics proposed by McBush.

Marc PDX   July 25th, 2008 12:53 am ET

The main stream media has played an unprecedented role in this campaign. Their softball approach with Obama (until the famous Saturday Night Live skit) cost Hillary Clinton the Democratic nomination. Over the last month and a half of the primary she outperformed Obama in the debates and among the remaining primary states. But it was already too late – Obama had built an insurmountable lead earlier, when the MSM was asking Hillary tough questions but asking Obama essentially what his favorite color was. The MSM should NOT be in a position to throw an election to a candidate. After all it should be the people who chose (meaning there is no place for a propagandistic info flow control by the media). I predict there will be some serious conversations about this after the election – with some legislative changes that take the MSM influence out of the equation in the future. Same thing is happening to McCain as happened to Hillary. The only time he gets on TV (or in most newspapers) is when he commits a gaffe (note that Obama has commited his own several times – it is not the exclusive domain of McCain). None of McCain's town hall meetings are making it into the MSM. But every step Obama takes (all carefully choreographed by his staff). is extensively covered. It's amazing he isn't further ahead in the polls. All I can think is thank God that many Americans can think for themselves and don't just drink the MSM's (and Hollywood's) Kool-Aid!

Honestly MSM, properly vet the guy and show both candidates equally and let the American people make their own decision!

geen   July 25th, 2008 12:51 am ET

the sad..oh so sad reality is: McGoofy is no more than the Moron's (bush) Poodle (as the popular t-shirt says) and it really doesn't matter who the hell he selects as his war-mongering lap-dog as vice prescedent (yes. I know I misspelled that!); the thing is….not only Barack, but the Democratic party should be seriously concerned….If the Democratic candidate, whether it be Barack (or Clinton…dont for a moment be deceived into belieliving she is out of it yet) loses this election, and I pray that they don't, the democratic party, for all intents and purposes, should decertify itself as viable force in politics….

MrMagoo.
'McCain would much rather talk in germany as president????'
Wishful thinking.
Not gonna happen
McCain might as well be talking german in the US.
No one understands his policies or why he would really believe them!
He still does not understand that 'the US should not invade another country that has not attacked us.
The surge is irrelevant.
He is going through the campaign like Mr Magoo. He thinks he is right and just keeps on pushing along. If I was him I would not want
more press coverage!! The more press and the deeper McBush will sink!!

Three 'possible' VP candidates in three days. Do you know what 'possible' even means? You should read Boole. The guy doesn't even try to be called out as a VP candidate. He only meets, greets, talks, with the presidential one. Only the media has anything to do with BS like this. The real story is going on, and the media feels like it should forget about it less the less informed part of America be angered and frustrated by thruth, again. The point is, you only seem to be able to cover mistakes about the McCain campaign. Yet, you only seem to be able to cover hype over Obama's. Where's the thruth then? Can you still control it ? Media ?

I have to say this   July 25th, 2008 12:28 am ET

Sorry for invading this forum, but I have to say something to get it off my chest.

Obama made a speech today that demanded socialism in this country.

He spoke of his message of peace and equality for the world in Victory Plaza.

Cough Cough apparently his advisor's are really dumb, or we need to seriously take this at face value.

The Victory Statue was erected in the 1870s to give a big middle finger to Europe when Prussia had a good army. The angel on top has the hand and arm motion that Hitler himself used for his nazi propaganda that everyone knows of today.

His message, along with the symbolism of the location, scares me half to death.

It is Amazing to me how much time McCain and his campaign spends on watching Obama. It must be really lonely over in the McCain camp when bore-dumb sets in.

News media is asking why isn't Obama head by more but the real question is: Why the hell isn't McCain ahead by more since everyone is claiming that EXPERIENCE is what folks are looking for? Hmm we all know that McCain has a whole lot of that but what about WISDOM? That is what is important. A person can have alot of experience but if they don't know what to do with it then they are worthless

Conservative and Proud   July 24th, 2008 11:22 pm ET

All you "intellectual" liberals cannot spell to save your life. Too bad the country of Germany can't vote, either. I suppose you looked over that in PoliSci…

And Philly Abe's racist comment is absurd. No prominent Republican has brought up the issue of race in this election season. In fact, it's all been started on the left. McCain is very respectful when it comes to Obama's race. Maybe if you pulled your head out, you'd notice that Bobby Jindal, someone until this week was mentioned as a potential VP, is of Indian descent.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeahhhhhhh

The Bush budget man…right.

If McCain's base (aka the media) would actual show how inept he is instead of following Obama with an Electron microscope then this thing would be way over. No responsible American can vote for McCain he is utterly clueless, confused, and dim.

I'll take the kid out of flight school over the guy with 100,000 miles logged talking about his P-51 and nodding off and on.

Guys experience only is a factor if it earns you a clue. Otherwise it's strictly longevity. Their are two candidates both should be required to demonstrate their command of the issues. Instead Obama is on trial and McCain gets a free ride.

I have no idea how this became a referendum on Obama when the burden of proof is on the neocons and that totally includes McCain since he has sold out and is beholden to them for this nomination.
Instead, again we have the GOP pointing fingers, slinging mud, avoiding responsibility, and devoid of ideas fooling the same folks again.
Also, this time there are a few more that are fooling themselves and are acting traitorously, not just to their party and ideals but the nation and future generations by disregarding all logic, reason, and common sense out of misplaced and misguided anger.

Jim   July 24th, 2008 11:11 pm ET

Hey Obama supporters, give me a break whining about media bias. Did you not notice the circus of media that followed that unqualified dunce, who would not be the nominee if he were not black, to Europe?

Do you not understand how much of white America sees their own situation and can identify with Hillary Clinton and John McCain when they see a lesser qualified minority being considered for a job that they are more qualified to hold.

The moment this country realizes that this is nothing but affirmative action on a Presidential scale, they will vote against him and this will be a rout… and you know where affirmative action hurts the most? Union country, which would be Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, and Iowa. Goodbye Barack, glad you were able to tour Europe on stupid America's dime, smart America will be voting for the other guy, even if he picks Mickey Mouse for his running-mate… but then again, Mickey Mouse is more qualified than you are too.

It would seem that every time there is a stir in the air regarding a possible VP candidate for Senator McCain, it quickly vaporizes. It is my belief that each potential pick takes a long hard look at the facts and arrives at the conclusion that it would be a wasted cause. McCain is out of touch, he spends more time jabbing at Senator Obama than he does talking about the issues and what he would do. To me, that's a sure sign that he's in fear of the potential of Senator Obama.

Here's my question. Doesn't CNN realize how stupid it looks that everyday there is different "BUZZ" about a different VP candidate. Last time I checked, their were 6 or 7 "very likely" GOP VP's and at least that many on the Democratic side. This is "hall talk" in a junior high school newspaper, and treating it as such just cheapens the process and make CNN and other media outlets look JUVENILE.

Grow up.

If we want better elections, we'll need to start with better news coverage.

Jeremy   July 24th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

i told you, obama is not electable… LOOSE OHIO and MICHIGAN and FLORIDA.. YOU LOOSE THE ELECTION!!!! EVEN IF YOU HAVE GREAT WINS IN CALIFORNIA AND NEW YORK…. Obama needs Hillary Clinton more then ever… I hope he makes the right choice or we'll have to deal with President McCain for four years…………

SOMEBODY, ANYBODY, PLEASE ACTUALLY COVER A MCCAIN GAFFE. PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aaron from Ohio   July 24th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

I'll echo Luke's comment. I've lived in Ohio all 26 years of my life and I've never heard of him. Although, after a little bit of research, I found that he did represent the 57th most Republican district in America. Anyone who has been remotely connected to a budget during GW's presidency should be avoided like the plague.
Wait a tick…I'm a democrat! Go for it McSame…pick him. I'm sure that he'll hold up real well in the VP debates against Obama's VP selection(no matter who it is).

Remy   July 24th, 2008 10:42 pm ET

How many people run away from McBush in fear of losing their own political future?

I think any unpopular ma/woman will join McCain.

Anonymous   July 24th, 2008 10:41 pm ET

it must be a real hee-haw to spend the day with McCain, getting to whisper corrections in his ear after everything he says.

He should just name a monkey his vice president. I figure if we are dumb enough to vote him into office, why not?

WHAT

JohnnyBoy   July 24th, 2008 10:38 pm ET

Barack gave a speech to 200,000 Socialists in Germany. They have no clue what it's really like to live in a democracy. He's not running for Chancellor, he's running for POTUS, folks. He's a stylish young smooth talker that plays well to people who only get to read about democracy. Do you want Germany to elect your president? Do you think you should elect theirs? Think about this folks – junior senator – no real experience doing anything but selling himself to you. Well, he's doing pretty well at that – and then you get an empty suit with smooth talking, empty phrases that the media swore gave them goosebumps. Get a grip.

Spider   July 24th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

Mark my words. If McCain choses Collin Powell or a female as a running mate, the polls with show a dramatic shift to him. Then, everyone can tell me this election has nothing to do with ageism, sexism or racism. Hogwash.

E. Scott   July 24th, 2008 10:32 pm ET

There has been so much hype about Obama being the first Black president. Sorry to break it to ya, he is just as white as he is black.

Scott L   July 24th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

@Lorna, NY

Um Bill Clinton had the chance to veto NAFTA in 1993 but he didn't. Obama is a BIG TIME supporter of NAFTA per his comments "behind the scenes" to the Canadians. Don't worry when I say I oppose it that is political posturing.

Do you want a cookie to go along with your Flavor-Aid???

Timber (ex dem)   July 24th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

For God's sake, what is all the "black in America" business? Why are the asians, mexicans and irish not crying? Really, they are not the only ones who have had a rough past. Obama has become a nominee for president and still they are not happy and say things have not changed!! You have to walk on eggshells around black people so as not to offend them, yet they hurl all sorts of insults in rap songs at everybody and it is ok. There are tons of important, WEALTHY, influential black people in this country and around the world. It is time to move on and stop using slavery as a crutch. The Irish were enslaved by the British and starved to death, they moved on. The Chinese were starved and tortured by the japanese, they moved on. We fought bitterly against germans, Italians and Japanese during world wars, we MOVED on. You only hurt yourself otherwise.

I'm disgusted with the old men of this country trying to prejudice all of us that are over 65. A lot of us still work and we don"t have 8 mega-mansions like John McCain.

He's a liar. He's a spoiled little Navy Brat that married into money to buy his way into politics and I'm sick of him.

I don't care who his VP pick will be. If we older working white people have a vote (that gets counted) he can kiss his ego goodbye.

I'm angry that the wealthy white old men of this country hold us all down.

The things he comes up with is laughable .
Ever watch him when he is talking he looks straight ahead a while then turns his head to the right a while then turns his head to the left for a while like he is a mechanical dummy and someone is pushing a button to switch directions .
A speaker he is not,an intelligent person ? he is not, interesting to watch ? OMG forget that ,clear mind its fogged up ,up to date ? still back in his time zone.
Is McShame a leader ? no a fallower he can't think of anything intelligent to do or say .

CNN! Please stop saying Barack Obama lost to Hillary Clinton in Ohio by nearly 10 points, he lost be 14 points! You are confusing his lose to her in Pennsylvania with his loss in Ohio. Or perhaps you are just trying to sugar coat the butt-whopping she laid on him in key battleground states… either way, you're wrong.

Has anyone read a story by CNN yet about Obama that does anything but try to pull him down? Obama Slipping in the Polls, Death Row Inmates Support Obama, Media in Love with Obama, Obama Foreign Trip Highlights Inexperience. I'd love to see a story about Obama that's neutral for a change CNN. I know you're trying to prove to the Fox News crowd that you're not giving Obama special treatment, but really this is ridiculous.

linda from South Dakota   July 24th, 2008 9:26 pm ET

lorna,, it just shows that mccain has a temper that is out of control, he gets jealous( which isnt safe) he critizes instead of sticks to issues,, if he does "it",,its ok, if obama does it, its not,,, thinkg is,, mccain is playin a game here,, america doesnt like games nor do we want the same future years to be like that last 10,, sooooo,, mcaain? grow up,,, runnin for president isnt a game so campaign honestly,, stick to issues, and please dont act like a kid who didnt get his candy,,,, better yet,, fly off somewhere and stay cos you will not win at all,, the way your campaign is ran,,, your a pity-ful grown man who pouts when u doesnt get his way,, go obama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Portman would be the best McCain supporter Obama could possibly hope for.

Who gives a crap about McCain? I am growing increasingly tired of hearing him bad mouth Obama. I was on the fence for a while about who I might vote for but I am less than impressed by McCain the past week or so. I have yet to hear a solid plan from him for what he will do as President. It seems like he spends most of his time trying to nitpick and tear Obama's plans apart. Does he not have a functioning brain of his own?

Rick FL   July 24th, 2008 9:16 pm ET

Wow, another VP story. McCain disputes the media one time, and they seem to accommodate, even though it can debated he receives easier treatment than other candidates. Did the media extend the same courtesy to Hillary when she asked? I think not. The media seems to focus on any slight thing Clinton and Obama have done. Where's the fairness please? There have been many mistruths needing clarification from this past week alone (i.e. define surge, reason for lower oil prices, geography, etc.).

TangoDancer   July 24th, 2008 9:16 pm ET

I live in the first district in Ohio. Rob Portman's district is very similar to my own. I can't vote for this man in any election, nor would I – but I think that he is an honorable man. He seems to enjoy universal respect from the average Ohioan and much of the population here can identify with his values. While I openly admit to being an Obama supporter, I also must acknowledge that Mr. Portman is a decent fellow and this is a smart tactical move by McCain to pick an Ohioan for a running mate.

Jay   July 24th, 2008 9:16 pm ET

Obama's supporters will stop at nothing to run people down and have hateful things to say. As soon as a post comes up that is not pro Obama you guys jump all over it. Well just so you know the people who go and vote and will elect the next President are so sick of you bashing and childish behavior. There are alot of good things that could come from an Obama win, but that will not happen. The people who look at issues, pro and con, look at the facts will eventually make the right choice.

Read some of these post and see how childish they are. Grow up.

Rocky   July 24th, 2008 9:10 pm ET

I don't believe the VP choice will matter for either side unless if course Obama picks Hillary. In the end this will be decided by which ever candidate figures out the main issue is energy prices and comes up with a solution that sounds like it might work. If one of these guys wants to impress me they should go back to the senate and work for a solution to this problem.

Joan   July 24th, 2008 9:09 pm ET

This is another VP candidate who would stand out so much from Sen. McCain and would emphasize some of his shortcomings. Do they really want a VP who might overshadow the real presidential candidate? By the way, it is so obvious that the McCain campaign is very desperate these days because they have been trying every which way to try and get some coverage and it appears they have made the media feel guilty or something because the coverage is pretty thin at times. There was a headline when ONE man heckled Obama. Goodness, he had 200,000 cheering him this afternoon and it's not getting the coverage it deserves. The McCain camp is so green with jealousy that they are grasping at silly criticisms. You can bet if McCain could draw that kind of a crowd, they'd do it in a minute but that's not going to happen so they are downplaying it How petty..

mel   July 24th, 2008 9:06 pm ET

Come On CNN do your job. It shouldn't take an average american citizen like me to point out facts when you are getting paid big bucks to do that.

jodan wiese   July 24th, 2008 8:38 pm ET

I think McCain did something (surprisingly) very smart today when he said that Obama just says WHATEVER BECAUSE HE IS UNTESTED, UNEXPERIENCED, DON'T KNOW BETTER, so he just said outlandish things. It's always easy to criticize when you haven't been in a situation. I can say I hate the war in iraq too. Why not vote me president? The point is Obama didn't even have a vote. And on issues after issues, he abstains from voting so he doesn't have to take sides. He is a very smart politician.

Anyway the point is what Mccain said today should be the key message to use to get to HILLARY SUPPORTERS. Praising her is not enough. Mccain need to empathize with those who vote for hillary and in effect unjustly lost to obama. That Hillary was a much better candidate but she was overshadowed by someone (obama) who is willing to say anything without haven't any experience to back it up, or experience to get things done (those who don't do teach, lecture like obama), just to get the nomination.

Hope Mccain is listen if he actually wants to win.

An Obama adviser, Air Force Maj. Gen. Scott Gration (Ret.), later elaborated on Obama's decision to skip the event.

"We learned from the (Pentagon) last night that the visit would be viewed instead as a campaign event," Gration said. "Sen. Obama did not want to have a trip to see our wounded warriors perveived as a campaign event when his visit was to show his appreciation for our troops and decided instead not to go."

Anyone seen McCain walk down stairs or steps lately? Nurse and Wife Cindy always has ahold of his elbow as he holds the railing. He is to feeble and weak to be president. Chris Brown, Rural Georgia   July 24th, 2008 8:24 pm ET

What im tired of is the media covering the media coverage of Sen. Obama. We are witnessing history and the best the media can feed the public is how in love they are with Sen. Obama and whether or not they are being fair. This is incorrect. We the public are in love with Sen. Obama and public interest is the driving force behind ratings. Instead of McCain courting the 60+ crowd he and his party need to figure a way to appeal to the people and not our fears. We are becoming numb to these tactics and we are ready to seize the moment. Im extremely proud that Obama has international appeal.

Oh, would someone close to McSame tell him to just shut the hell up about the trip he challenged Obama to take! He sounds like a grumpy, old, whining, man. I guess that's what you get for being a "speculator". As you said, we're not going to help those "speculators". So, shut up and take your licks like a man! Like the war hero you are! Have some dignity….please!

People is because of McCain Obama went to Iraq, McCain said Obama sould stop talking and visit Iraq and see what is going on there instead of making remarks , if Obama was not threatned by McCain he would never have r visited Iraq

Jeff   July 24th, 2008 8:15 pm ET

Can't McCain choose whomever he wants? And won't he make the best choice among all potential candidates? Of course he will! If people are so disillusioned by McCain and more excited about socialism then I guess they will show that at the poll in the fall won't they!

No one wants to be the VP on the loosing side.

McCain campaigned in Canada, Columbia and Mexico. He is truly a disgrace and an embarrasment to the USA. He is so full of hate and anger. He talks out of both sides of his mouth.

Obama you have represented the USA with pride, dignity and intregrity. Thank you. I feel other countries respect us again.

Regarding the other ticker about McCain appealing to younger voters…he doesn't appeal to me and I'm an older voter!!! I can't think of one single person on this planet that he could pick to be VP that would make me consider voting for him!!
Everyone, please go and read the speech Obama gave in Berlin. It is amazing.

Another McBush's VP of the Day saying no thanks, I'd rather not, now go away.

Chrystal A.   July 24th, 2008 8:05 pm ET

People are excited from around the globe about the possibility of Barack Obama becoming the President of the United States. The positive energy created by Obama is something I haven't seen before. I have felt nothing but contempt towards the US government and it's policies for the last 8 years…nothing has been positive about the Bush government. Finally, some hope, change, positive and forward thinking from a candidate. I watch the race daily and as a Canadian who knows how important the US relationship is with not only Canada but the rest of the world I sincerely hope that the American people elect a leader that helps to unite his country and build back those relationships with it's allies and take a new approach to foreign policy.

Sean   July 24th, 2008 8:03 pm ET

I don't care who McCain's running mate is, McCain himself will still be a disaster for this country.

And as McCain criticizes Obama for giving a speech in a foreign country, has he completely forgotten that he gave his own speech in Canada less than a month ago? Only one of three explanations make sense here. One, McCain forgot about that just like he forgot that he opposed Bush's tax cuts. Two, as far as McCain is concerned, Canada doesn't count as a foreign country. Or three, McCain thinks we're so stupid and uninformed that we've forgotten about the speech he gave in a foreign country. And regardless of which of the three is accurate, it's something to be concerned about.

TheTruthHurts   July 24th, 2008 8:02 pm ET

I like the town hall idea, but if McCain thinks this is going to get it done, he's the one that's done.

The old McCain (not his age, but his positions) might get elected, but we'd have utter gridlock in Washington. The new and unimproved McCain (pandering to the right) will not get elected and we'll be better off for it.

BTW, stop whining about the fact that Obama attracts people to his message. Isn't that part of the definition of a leader? What kind of a leader has no followers? Or, are you whining to prove Phil Gramm was right?

Ohio Gal   July 24th, 2008 8:01 pm ET

I am from Ohio and have never even heard of Rob Portman. McCain better do better than that if he wants an Ohio win. I am a 30 year old female who had always been registered Republican…but I can tell you McCain will not win Ohio if he does not have a GREAT VP Candidate. Obama will. I am telling you from southern ohio that Ohio has felt the pinch as much as any other state. People are unable to go on vacations and in my small town almost every other home is for sale….mortgage crisis??? You have no idea. I can definitely see why people are looking to Obama…Ohio needs hope. I'm sorry…no offense to Portman but I don't think he will cut it. Keep looking John!

tillzen   July 24th, 2008 8:00 pm ET

Portman is too YOUNG! We need to make McCain look MORE vital, not less. We should be vetting Abe Vigoda and Jack Lalanne immediately!

RCD WA   July 24th, 2008 7:59 pm ET

Who's ever heard of this guy anyway? This is just a pathetic attempt by McCrazy to grab headlines. All his potential VP choices are bad. I hope its not Romney or Huckabee. Romney's a dimwitted hypocrite and Huckabee's even crazier than McCain.

Rich   July 24th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

McCain has become a petty, negative campaigning, whining loser. I've even a Republican, when did our party get so pathetic. He can't get a fact straight to save his life. And if your going to go negative then actually go negative on something of substance not meaningless nuances.

We are going to get destroyed!!!!!!!!

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   July 24th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

Portman has been talked about before.
From a financial perspective, I'm clear why he is considered a strong financial person.
I'm not saying he isn't, I just don't understand because his major was Anthropolgy as an udergrad, and then he became a lawyer.
He did work on the Ways and Means committee, a tax writing committee.
Anyone have any credible, concrete info?

Polly   July 24th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

Wake up Idealists! The cards Barack is playing with allow him to play Muslim in the Middle East, white in politics, and black in church, well, unless he gets caught. We'll talk about that later, sweety.

F. Taylor   July 24th, 2008 7:55 pm ET

There is absolutely nothing wrong with John picking a Bush economist for VP. Bush economics got us to where we are today and John is not hiding the fact his policies are identical.

McCain and Gramm are right when they talked about the whiners with mental recessions. It's time people started listening to John McCain and George Bush when they tell us the economy is strong so why would we want or need to accept Obama's change tactics?

Bulldog   July 24th, 2008 7:54 pm ET

It doesn't matter who McCain picks. He is just as big of a loser whoever his attack dog is. Right now McCain has plenty of attack dogs out there and the media seems to be eating it up. Obama's campaign has been very gently to McCain for the last week or so and that shows their character while McCain has used the typical GOP attack and lie strategies of the past. If this is McCain's idea of change he is obviously still stuck back in the 70's. He has fallen and can't get up.

oldsoldierboy   July 24th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

Ilona Hussein Proud Canadian   July 24th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

Hello everyone

I was away for a few days and am now trying to catch up.
Mybarackers, I hope that good things have been happening for Barack.

I was lucky to catch Barack's speech in Berlin and I was completely BLOWN AWAY. Barack was true to himself, this was NOT A SPEECH ABOUT THE ELECTION, IT WAS ABOUT WORLD ISSUES (OLD AND NEW) AND UNITY IN GENERAL….. I HOPE THAT CNN, OR SOME OTHER NEWS NETWORK, WILL AIR IT AGAIN SOMETIME SOON, SO THAT ALL OF THOSE WHO MISSED IT, WILL GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO REALLY APPRECIATE IT.

Barack got so much APPLAUSE, it really was HEART WARMING. AT THE CONCLUSION Just seeing him TRYING SO HARD TO SHAKE HANDS WITH SO MANY PEOPLE WAS AWESOME, BUT AT THE SAME TIME A LITTLE BIT SCAREY, THANK GOD EVERYONE THERE GENUINELY LIKED HIM, AND JUST WANTED TO WISH HIM WELL, THOUGH I MUST SAY THAT HIS SECURITY PERSONNEL WERE ON THEIR TOES.

AGAIN BARACK SUPPORTERS, HE DID YOU, AND ALL OF AMERICA PROUD. CONGRATULATIONS!

wanbligi   July 24th, 2008 7:48 pm ET

At least Portman doesn't look like he has his foot in the grave yet. No matter who McCain has as his VP he will still lose. It's over already. As mentioned by others, did you see or hear about Obama's Berlin speech before a crowd of at least 200,000?

Now that's news! This little sidetrack that CNN and McCain are trying to pull with the VP guess is small peanuts compared to the Obama bump.

Take care.

James in central Florida   July 24th, 2008 7:48 pm ET

Well I don't think that this gentleman will be McCain's pick for VP, but it's fun throwing around meat for the gullible liberal crowd. What it all boils down to is that McCain could run Donald Duck as his VP and still trounce Mr. BOdiddleysquatt in November!

Nick C.   July 24th, 2008 7:46 pm ET

Obama has an utter stiff of an opponent like McCain, and all he can manage in national polls is 44% support, and DROPPING? Obama is toast! Hahahahaha!

Polly   July 24th, 2008 7:44 pm ET

Hopefully, whoever John McCain picks to be his running mate, it will be someone most conservatives like, including James Dobson- I think it would be a mistake for him to not vote, as he's threatened. I think he should re-think that decision- he might help allow the devil in a door he could have closed. :) Seriously, I know John McCain will pick the best man for the job. VOTE Dobson! You're not setting a good example. The conservatives need to come together and unite for the sake of their cause and country. Just remember Dobson- McCain didn't leave his fellow brothers behind!

Roger from CA   July 24th, 2008 7:44 pm ET

Yeah, for all the griping about the media coming from McCain and the Republicans, you guys are sure playing lapdog to him on his cynical ploy to stay in the news by teasing about VP candidates. By my count, that is now 3 possible Veeps that have been floated this week–Jindal, Pawlenty and now Portman (and let's not forget the rather steady teasing about Romney).

Yep, the media sure is biased for Obama. Yessirree!

John McCain was spotted in a grocery store holding a loaf of bread. Might the loaf of bread be his VP running mate???
___________________________________________
Doubtful. I hear that one of the four rules of picking a VP is not to pick one that will outshine the nominee. McCain must find someone dumber than a loaf of bread – and I don't think Dubya can run. I did find a list of people who qualify. Here goes:

Praetorain
Raymond "David" Duke

Bayou Joe
Vote Nader

That would be like picking….Dick Cheney….but no, McCain is not at all like Bush.

Oh it's always fun to guess who might be VP, isn't it? The problem is, the guesses are so varied, and will probably all be incorrect in the end. So, why even suggest it? Why waste your time?
Frankly, I'm tired of waiting, Americans are suffering now – this is not a game. Both candidates need to make a choice and get on with the formal debates, fast.
It would be hilarious to see both Bob Barr and Ralph Nader begin debates without the other two superstars, which would introduce a whole new dynamic to the leadership question for the Presidency of the United States of America.

Vision is great but Obama doesn't have anything to back it up. The man can read a speech pretty good but he hasn't proven he can do it. I think the only thing he should be running for is a position on a TV show. He'd make a great actor because that is all he is doing!

McCain isn't the brightest apple in the bunch either so don't think I'm on his band wagon. Let's face it, the loser is really going to be the big winner at the end of all of this cause I sure wouldn't want to take this mess over!

Oh, and by the way, if Obama is the greatest thing since sliced bread why does the latest poll only show him up by 4 points? If McCain is really "McSame" as you all call him Obama should be crushing him by 20+ in the polls. This just goes to show you not everyone is a believer.

"former Bush administration official" — oh yeah, there's a phrase that instills great confidence!!

once again mccain's staff has sent him out looking like a fool. his truly feeble attempts to somehow try to diminish the WORLDWIDE popularity of obama is bleeping hilarious, and totally pathetic too.

how can someone be strong on foreign policy and not even know who the nmajor players are, and where their countries are? i mean, come on, people, that is ridiculous!

i'm starting to feel sorry for mccain. they keep shoving him out there, and every day he shows how completely unqualified and incapable he is.

When i see McCain in these town hall meetings he really looks and talks like a tired man.His robotic body seems to have no juice left, and he speaks often about the surge and that he ordered. Considering the population of Bagdad and number of soldiers and iraqui police its almost 5 to 1 ratio. That is 5 civilians to 1 police. And we call that a success? Thats what we need in Wash D.C.
Mr McCain should also order a surge in cities in this country.
Lets solve problems here at home and not worry about the surge. And when McCain said 100 years in Iraq (may be ),he was actually stating the facts. He is been there, done that. McCain needs change himself.

MCCAIN DIDN'T TREAT THE PEOPLE IN THE OTHER COUNTRIES WITH RESPECT THE LAST TIME HE WENT TO IRAQ AND THE SURROUNDING COUNTRIES.

MCCAIN ATTACKED OBAMA BEFORE HE WENT TO IRAQ AND THE MIDDLE EAST. AND MCCAIN HAS ATTACKED OBAMA EVERYDAY SINCE HE HAS BEEN GONE. I find it both amusing and telling that Obama fills stadiums and 200,000 in Berlin come top hear him speak and Mc Cain can't even fill his local Moose Lodge! Repugs and Pumas had better start practicing saying President Obama!

Try some logic, not hate and fear   July 24th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

Another obscure VP candidate rumor to try to take the spotlight away from Obama. CNN, you do not have to invent lame McCain articles so he can have as many as Obama.

What brought out all the nut cases on the blog today? We seem to have attracted an unusual number of rabid Obama haters. To what do we owe the idiotic ramblings of so many angry half-wits? Did some ultra-slimeball call for a renewed effort on the blogs?

Can you all please cut out the fake letters, fake Obama book quotes, false accusations and the like. Lying doesn't help McCain's cause. All you are doing is exposing your own lack of character, inadquacies, hate, and cowardice (when you say we should be scared, you really mean that you are scared – we are not!). Hate and fear make bad decisions!

I suspect a lot of people are upset that McCain's challenge to Obama backfired. Obama went abroad and looked more presidential than McCain ever could. 200,000 in Berlin. Guess the Commander in Chief question has been answered. McCain should file this under "be careful what you ask for" and remember it for the debates. McCain will be overwhelmed by Obama – bank on it!

Lorna, NY   July 24th, 2008 7:14 pm ET

OK. Let me get this straight. McCain kept a log of the days Obama has not been in Iraq. He goes to Iraq and now McCain is jealous. Isn't this the same McCain who went to Canada, Columbia and Mexico??? The difference between McCain's trip and Obama's trip is McCain is making sure Americans lose more jobs to these NAFTA countries. Obama's trip was to build America image back to the status is was prior to GWB entering office. I am no longer ashamed to say I am an American when I am traveling to other countries. Americans should be proud of Obama, he is an intelligent man whose vision is profound.

McCain's going to lose anyhow, especially if he keeps up this negativity in the media. It is disgusting how green with envy McCain is about Obama's popularity. For a 72 year old man, he is incredibly immature in his comments.

Management and Budget 2006-2007? Wow – decline decline decline decline decline decline

CNN – you've fallen for this VP thing to get attention 4 (FOUR as wolf says FOUR) times this week (it's now thursday).

ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Earl   July 24th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

That's a good one CNN….you've already used the VP card this week to

get attention away from Obama…..not working this time …..sorry

Brendose, Oceanside CA   July 24th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

So much from keeping his distance from the Bush Administration…………….

This guy helped Bush with his budget? And people haven't tried to stone him yet??

Lesley   July 24th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

This VP speculation is a pathetic attempt by the McCain campaign to garner headlines. If he put more energy into promoting his own policies and ran a respectful campaign like he promised, he wouldn't need to stoop to childish tactics and sarcastic remarks in order to compete. Who said I'd rather be right than be president? I think it was McCain. He'll lose if he keeps this up.

Bone   July 24th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

John McCain was spotted in a grocery store holding a loaf of bread. Might the loaf of bread be his VP running mate???

I guess that's CNN's big McCain push for the day. Tell me when he actually decides; quit telling me that everyone he's spotted with might be a VP candidate. I'm getting sick of this type of crap coverage.

chris in va   July 24th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

Sure, that's what we need, the budget manager from The Shrub's administration. How many trillions are we in debt now? The Chinese Fire drill continues, GEEZ!!!!

bill for barack   July 24th, 2008 7:05 pm ET

He'd be a good fit for McShame.
Portman's wothless too.
And, for those who are following along, Rob is a BUSH ADMINISTRATION PUPPET.

joe   July 24th, 2008 7:04 pm ET

You closed before I wrote this:
Uh… Didn't he speak in Canada while he was a presidential candidate… am I missing something?

Why didn't he wait til he was president to travel to Iraq and speak in Canada?

Why didn't he wait til he divorced his first wife to start up with Cindy?

Waiting isn't his style. Preemptiveness and uprovoked aggresiveness is. You may THINK that's a good thing, but think about it a while. See a problem?

Latinos for Obama   July 24th, 2008 7:02 pm ET

It's called distraction. Please CNN get a clue already!

David, Silver Spring, MD   July 24th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

Now if McQueeg picked Natalile Portman, he might stand a chance.

Mike   July 24th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

wow, beat the media! Look at this ticker and see how Obama news have been pushed down…….

David, Silver Spring, MD   July 24th, 2008 6:59 pm ET

Hey did you hear? Barack Obama had an audience of more than 200,000 cheering people in Berlin when he gave a speech there today.

Won't it be nice to have a president that the world respects and admires?

Obama 08
