Clinton holds 'retirement dinner' contest

Clinton's campaign advertises a chance to win dinner with the senator.
Clinton's campaign advertises a chance to win dinner with the senator.

(CNN) – No, she’s not leaving politics, but she is still trying to retire more than $25 million of campaign debt.

Sen. Hillary Clinton’s Web site is advertising a contest to win a summer “retirement dinner” with the former presidential contender. The price for a chance to win is a contribution to her creditors.

“Summer is a time for simple pleasures: family vacations, baseball games, and dinner out under the stars,” Clinton’s e-mail to supporters says. “At least it is if you aren't running for president! It sure is nice having a little more time on my hands, and I'd love to spend some of it with you.”

Those interested in helping Clinton retire the debt can pay from $10 to more than $2,300 for a chance to win the dinner and “talk about whatever you’d like.” The campaign’s site doesn’t say where the winner will dine with the senator, but it mentions that round-trip transportation and the total value may run $3,000.

According to the latest filing with the Federal Elections Commission, as of June 30 Clinton is $25 million in debt, over $13 million of which is owed to herself.

So if you subtract what she "owes" herself...she is only 12 million dollars in debt...Big difference between claiming to be 25 million and the actual amount of 12 million. Since this was a "loan" to herself, I wonder what the "interest" rate was? Just have Bill "write" another book about his escapades during her campaign run.

I think she needs to forgive the debt owed to herself. Unless, of course, she borrowed that as well. If she expects me to pony up even as little as $10 so she can pay her own bank account back, she's got another thing coming. It was her decision to float those loans. She should have expected that she would have to pay them back if she lost – and she should have recognized that losing was a very real possibility. So, not having a contingency for that is very poor planning on her part and not an obligation on the part of her supporters.

    Gwen is South Carolina...

Actually, I think around 15% of black people have been loyal to the Clintons... The rest voted for skin color and an empty suit.

Obama = a telepromter and an empty suit

His biggest accomplishment in the Senate was an Ethics bill. He's so ethical he plagarizes speeches.

Oh, a bigger question. How does a law professor such as Obama not know where he stands on gun control. He flip-flopped on the D.C. gun ban. Pretty clear cut to me. Law abiding citizens should not be prohibited from owning guns. I'm not even a lawyer.

Hillary 08 or McCain if necessary

I bet she'll think twice before once again spending money on a campaign after it was obvious she had lost...

For that matter, given the protracted nature of Primaries, any candidate that has lost could say "I haven't really lost yet"...borrow lots of money...go way in debt...and make a headache for the winner.

Such behavior should not be encouraged... If Hillary can not repay her debt, it will incentivize future candidates to behave themselves...which I have no problem with.

LISA – If you love Hillary so much why don't you and the other 18 million of your loyal co-hearts contribute $2.00 each to her mismanaged and lost campaign and help her get out of debt. Put your money where your vote is.

@ Lisa "Keep your money, I will continue to bash Obama as long as Hillary is not on the ticket."

Ha...So Lisa, you are going to throw temper tantrums and spew hate for the rest of your life? Becasue she ain't going to be on the ticket. Wow, now thats dedication to bitterness if ever I heard it.

You (and other mal-contents) keep posting things like no Hillary, no Obama vote.
When will you finally get it through your skulls that we have the numbers on ours side and that your threats of extortion are impotent.
You can vote or write in whomever youi want. I know this just kills you, Lisa, but we really dont care anymore.

HILLARY SHOULD PAY HER OWN DEBT. SHE HAS THE LIBRARY, PROPERTY OR HAVE BILL GIVE ENOUGH SPEECHES TO PAY OFF HER DEBT. OBAMA SHOULD NOT ASK HIS SUPPORTER TO HELP HILLARY, I AM NOT GIVING HILLARY ANYTHING, I NEED MY MONEY FOR GAS AND OTHER PERSONAL NEEDS.

RETIRE HER DEBT? Excuse me...Hill & Bill have more money and always will, than most people who support or would vote for her. For crying out loud, they both have jobs, (getting payed) security (wealth) and health insurance (paid for by taxpayers), SHE CAN AFFORD TO PAY HER OWN DEBT, just like me and anyone else who makes BAD decisions and runs up the bills when they should NOT. People in this country are losing their jobs, insurance, retirement plans and homes and the economy is in the toilet. Many people can't even go anywhere because of high gas prices. What the hell is wrong with people and a country who would prey on less fortunate persons to get the "rich" out a self-inflicted JAM. This just speaks to what I knew all along, that she is in this for her, that loser Bill and "C". She doesn't care about you, me or this country, she is using all of it for self purpose. Anybody that gives Hill or Bill money at this point, for ANYTHING, needs to be examined by medical professionals. What R U thinking? I pray the Clinton's just go away and are never heard from again.

I will contribute to Hillary if she directly talks to the PUMA's and those in Florida that vandalized cars by spraying racial epithets against Sen. Obama. If she makes more of an effort to unite the party then I will contribute.

Lisa at 12:27: Keep dreaming Obama will win without Hillary.
He also received 18 million votes without the help of Rush Limbaugh's Operation Chaos. If Hillary really did have all those votes and you are all so upset about it then why is she still in debt. 18 million people giving $2 a piece would clear the debt with $ to spare. Now she has to sell her time to get $ ,and Obama's supporters should be scared of Hillary supporters voting for Mccain don't make me laugh.

I will be contributing to help pay off her debt, just as I contributed to her campaign. I really hope she is selected as Obama's V.P. candidate because I think that is the best way to unify the party and beat McCain. I'm really disappointed by all the bickering and mean comments on this board. To all of you who are democrats: Hillary has spent her life trying to help the litle guy (look it up, do a little reading about her, whatever). Barack is a rising star who I hope can put an end to divisive politics in Washington. The two of them would be unbeatable in the general election. And as a human being, please remember that anger, bitterness, jealousy, and pettiness do much more damage to your soul and spirit than to anyone you are trying to hurt.

The PUMA's need to put their money where their mouths are...If there are Soooooo many of you and you are sooooo powerful then why does your heroine still have so much debt? Maybe its because they are secret Republicans or maybe they are just media plants so they have another anti-Obama story to make it seem like Sir McGaffalot actually has a chance...

I agree with the posts that ask the question-where are the PUMA people? Where are those 18 million supporters? If they would give $1.38 her debt would be retired. Why no stories about her sale on her office furniture? I stumbled on that information. Her debt has not been reduced at all???? That is hard to believe. She is a disgrace to women that are real leaders. Hillary supporters- PAY HER BILLS!
