Sens. Obama and Clinton appeared with Gov. Richardson at a New Hampshire debate in January.

(CNN) – Is Bill Richardson about to kiss and make up with the Clintons? It certainly looks that way.

The New Mexico governor announced Wednesday that he will host two fundraisers to help Sen. Hillary Clinton retire more than $20 million in outstanding campaign debt accumulated during her failed White House bid.

"Governor Richardson's efforts reinforce Senator Obama's commitment to unifying the Democratic Party and assisting Senator Clinton's effort to retire her campaign debt," Bill Burton, a spokesman for Barack Obama’s campaign, said in a statement released by Richardson.

Richardson, who served as secretary of energy in Bill Clinton’s administration, decided to endorse the Illinois senator, now the presumptive Democratic nominee. The move was viewed as an act of betrayal by some longtime supporters of the Clintons. CNN Political Analyst James Carville, who has long and deep ties to both Clintons, even likened Richardson’s endorsement to Judas’s betrayal of Christ.

In late April, Richardson responded to Carville’s criticisms by saying that Carville and other Clinton supporters believe they are a “dynasty” and that they were “clinging to the throne.”

Since announcing his support for Obama, Richardson has made numerous television and campaign appearances on Obama’s behalf. He is also mentioned as a potential pick for vice president.

In the statement from Richardson, Clinton spokeswoman Kathleen Strand said, "Senator Clinton is grateful for Governor Richardson's and Senator Obama's efforts to assist with retiring her campaign debt and she is looking forward to continuing to campaign for Senator Obama and help ensure victory for Democrats throughout the country this fall."

Senator Clinton will attend both invitation-only events in New Mexico in mid-August.

Terms like "Judas" float around because networks like CNN insist on getting political hacks to masquerade as people with journalistic integrity. Bill Richardson is no more of a Judas than Hillary is Blue Coller, or than Barack is a savior.

CNN: If you'd like to get back to talking about the issues, like healthcare, Iraq, the economy, education, human rights, and the gammet of other issues that actually matter to Americans, and stop focusing on getting your political hacks to create the news, along with horse-race politics, maybe we'll actually get an informed electorate to make the right decision, come November.

some of you poeple are brain dead. If he wants to help her out and those complaining don't put into the fund then you were against her from the start and you were born STUPID

Saundra   July 30th, 2008 9:33 pm ET

The Clintons have made more than enough money to retire her campaign debt on their own. Bill just made $10 million for speeches...how much did their income tax filing say they have made since leaving the whitehouse?
Can you imagine how much she will make for speeches and the new book deal she is sure to get.
The Clintons could pay off the $10 million they owe to vendors and just write off the $10 million they loaned the campaign..and I'm sure if they want to have a fundraiser they could give another $10 million to help the poor and hungry here in America.. . and they would still have money left over.

texas girl   July 30th, 2008 9:27 pm ET

Judas, Judas. We all knew you'd come running back with your sad tail tucked between your legs. Too little, too late! All you bots, including you Judas, think you can buy whatever or whomever you want. The time is fast approaching when you'll find that is not the case. PUMA!!!

"Are you kidding me? Why would Hillary allow this traitor to "help" her out?

Um Steve, hate to break the news to ya' but Hillary has no control over who gives her the money or raises it. People who are on the receiving end of charity are usually not in control of such matters.

If you ran out of gas on the road and you wre broke, should you care who is generous enough to give you $5?

By the way, have you made a contribution? I am an Obama supporter and I donated $25 to her debt when Obama urged me to a few weeks ago. Its easy and it will give you some of your cred back.

Obama/KAine or Obama/Biden

jimbo   July 30th, 2008 9:18 pm ET

Hillary tell this traitor to take his money and shove it and his bad hairpiece you know where. He is a clown – looks like one , acts like one and talks like one. He betrayed the Clintons and i hope they shun him and many others who jumped on the Pied Piper bandwagon. They r in for a big shockc cuz many Americans are NOT connecting with Bambi and we r sick of him !!!

Alice in Florida   July 30th, 2008 9:15 pm ET

Go away, you traitor low-life freak Richardson

You will forever be Judas!

Maybe Bam Bam promised you the VP slot to get your endorsement so early, and I hope to GOD he picks you as #2

He'll lose for sure if he's dumb enough to do that, and I hope Hillary spits in your face when she becomes President in 2012

darren   July 30th, 2008 9:14 pm ET

I actually saw Bill Richardson. He seemed a very honorable and truthful person. I did not like when he supported Obama, after what Bill did for him. However, he is a very intellegent and sincer guy. Maybe this is his way to mitagate what he did to the Clintons. He could take his state to the democratic vote for the presidential level if he appeases all the democrates.

Matt, Canoga Park   July 30th, 2008 9:14 pm ET

I don't get this Hillary goes into debt at 25 million, says she has 110 million dollars in the bank. Bill just got 10 million to run his mouth.

And they want US to pay for them all while we have to pay a lot more for gas and food. When was the last time the Clintons had to pay for gas in their car? Or buy food at a store?

Why are we paying the debts of people who's whole life is that of privilege, perks and a free ride?

Can anyone explain to me why this is? And how they have everyone else going along with this?

Because if you can I have student loans and credit card bills I'd rather not pay either.

Gary from Madison, WI   July 30th, 2008 9:11 pm ET

I'd tell him to stick his money where the sun don't shine – if I were Hillary. He's such a brown-noser it makes me sick. I used to admire him as an effective politician – until this spring – when he became a talking head schmoozing Obama on any network that would have him. He should have stuck with the Clintons, who got him any notoriety that he has. Guilt money, probably.

susie   July 30th, 2008 9:00 pm ET

Don't trust Richardson, after doing the fundraisers he probably will go back on his word and give the money to Obama.

Willow, from Iowa   July 30th, 2008 8:57 pm ET

HRC won't want to take all of this good fresh money and put it on what she owes in the primaries. She will want to use it in 2012 for her senatorial campaign. She's been asking everybody if she can manage all of their donations for 2012. So she is basically taking money from the campaign in the primaries. She is going to owe more money this way. I hope she got a loan to pay off her vendors. Because those people probably need that money a whole lot more than she does.

Bill Richardson is not a "Judas" or a "traitor." He was loyal to Bill during the impeachment trial. Hell–that was enough water to carry! He probably selected Obama out of fear that Bill might screw up again!

Gary H   July 30th, 2008 8:46 pm ET

The childishness of some people is rediculous. I agree with what some other peole here are saying. If Hillary is your candidate support her. Obama has recieved the vast majority of his funds from small donations. I am an Obama supporter but I sent $50 to the Clinton campaign, why don't you. Talk is cheap, especially blather from Berkley. Put your money where your mouth is and you won't need help from Richardson. I thought most Democrats had more sense.

Governor Richardson had every right to support who he wanted to. This is nothing but politics.

Scott L   July 30th, 2008 8:43 pm ET

Why does Obama have his people speak for him? At least McCain says things himself...

Hilarious...this amateur is going to get slaughtered in the debates and will stutter his way back to Chicago. Maybe then he will finally do some real work. Useless empty suit.

LLMTruth   July 30th, 2008 8:37 pm ET

A Nightingale Sings in Berkley Square, said in part:

"...A close second is Mr. McCain..." in reference to Sen Hilary Clinton.

Apparently, Ms. Nigthingale is obviously oblivious to McCain's constant flip flopping, The blantant lies in his ads. His failure to admit that the Iraq war was a mistake and should have never have been fought. By his own admission knows absolutely nothing about the economy. His obvious lack of character. His inability to be truthful. And many many other aspects about McCain that don't sit too well with me. McCain a close second??? By what reasonning? What profound thought coming from this man that makes you draw that conclusion? That is not the statement from a very critical thinker, now is it.?

I'll tell you what's wrong with Ms Nightingale, she apparently has underlying reasons for not wanting to vote for Barack Obama. The standard good-ole-boy reasons. Imagine, here we are in the 21st century and are still with the bigotry of the 19th century. That to me is absolutely incredible. I guess it will take the second advent of Christ before there is a change of heart in this country. How pathetic is that. We as a people have progressed very little in our attitudes since the 1800's. FTLOG, what in world is wrong with people?

Ms Nightingale should be ashamed of herself for this archaic way of thinking. Thanks! I guess what little progress that has been achieved during the civil rights era was just an act. The true and real heart of most people in this country have surfaced in this election.

That Is most unfortunate, most unfortunate......

What a joke!! You don't see Mitt Romney whining all over the country – crying and pleading for people to please, please pay off his campaign debt.

Hillary is pathetic. She still can't accept that she lost and still believes that someone else should pay the tab for her failure.

I suppose, though, this is just the Democrat mind set to a T. "Don't worry if you make bad chocies, we can always make someone else pay the price for you so you don't have to deal with the consequences."

Dal CA   July 30th, 2008 8:13 pm ET

Retiring the debt will help Hillary, but she should not have got in that bad spot in the first place at all. She knew in Beginning of May that she will not win the nomination yet she chose to be in the race. Why? Just in case Obama tripped up and she will be the nominee by default.
I hope she learns the lesson for good.

Mary   July 30th, 2008 8:11 pm ET

Most all candidates end up with campaign debts, whether they win or lose. I just got an e-mail yesterday from the Joe Biden campaign asking for a donation to retire his debt. Those that do not realize this must be new to politics. Hillary's campaign debt is nothing new. She doesn't even have the biggest debt...look at what Mitt Romney had! At least those candidates with money will not suffer the effects as much as the candidates who are not so wealthy (however most politicians do seem to have plenty).

I am suprised at Bill Richardson though, as he seems to be playing both ends for political gain. He must have realized he is not on Obama's short list, and decided to help Hillary in case she runs again in the future. Wow...what a guy.

Don't be fooled everyone! The only reason the Obama campaign is helping Hillary pay off her debt is because she is going to be the VP pick for Obama.

I believe they are shooting out all this press with other contenders to throw off McCain's strategy on how to attack Obama. I believe Obama is going to let McCain spend most of his money attacking Obama and by the time he chooses his running mate Hillary, the Obama/Hillary campaign will have so much money, they will be able to drown the Crip Keeper McCain's campaign with negative adds and party unity adds that CK-McCain won't know how to respond.

Billary are always expecting others to bail them out of awful decision making as when supporters paid millions in legal fees because of Bill's escapades. Talk about entitlement ! I think everyone has totally missed Obama's message. His message of change, unity, reaching across. The man has gone this far because he is extremely intelligent. He wants us all to unite.Remember the debate when he said "Hillary and I were friends when we started and will be when it's done".He's never ruled her out and never said anything belittling about her.I still think he may put her as the VP but he has to allow time for people to see him and what he stands for.Now that he's done that he very well may put her in that spot.So far,he and his campaign has set a fine example of how things should be.This man is definitely a good christian in my opinion and whatever choices he makes always seem so far to be for the good of the people. We should all follow his example and learn from it.We must all work together to achieve peace and prosperity worldwide. All Mcain has ever offered is war, war, war.

Anyone but these 2   July 30th, 2008 6:37 pm ET

Of course Obama should help her. He wants to extend all kinds of welfare benefits to those who are irresponsible with their money. It's part of his platform.
Pick a third party candidate and vote. That's the only way we can tell Washington that we REALLY want change. I lean to Nader, but there's also Barr and McKinney. We won't win, but if enough of us show our disgust at these tired "big" parties, they will eventually have to respond to the people. Don't let them keep scaring you into that two party nonsense.

Julie   July 30th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

It's all a political game and Richardson did what he felt he had to do. He felt Clinton wouldn't win the Presidency and therefore endorsed Obama with the hopes of advancing his own political career. But his disloyality and lack of honor towards people who gave him is chance is sad and no matter how much he tries to bring himself back into the Clinton's good graces, his image has suffered a loss.

R.S.-St. Paul   July 30th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

I think it's really hilarious how CNN, the stereotype of anti-faith network would have the nerve to write "Carville even likened Richardson's endorsement (of Obama) to Judus's betrayal of Christ". Ha! Do any of the other folks out there who actually "have religion" find this the most hypocritical statement to make?!!!!! This is why all the Hillary supporters who do not plan to vote for Obama need to take heed, and vote for McCain. Because CNN, NBC, CNBC and the other major network news agencies are playing "patty-cake" with Mr. Obama, presenting such a biased version of the news, with the hopes of helping him win the election (through corruption of the news). We need to show these jerks that this will not be tolerated. How dare they mention anything about Christ in there coverage!

Debi   July 30th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

If Hillary would have gotten out of the race earlier instead of trying to beat the dead horse that was her failed campagin, then she would not have to repay herself now. Live and learn. Hopefully...

Is he adding strings to it?

Some how I do not feel this is out of the Goodness of his heart.

Or is promised the VP slot or important position if he helps her.

Im sure Everyone is curious to know his reasoning for it.

Hillary would make a far better President than Obama ever could.

Obama is Mr Hollywood with a speech. He still has nothing to stand on. except the peoples who's careers he has destroyed to move himself forward. Which is sinful and not presidential act.

John Driscoll   July 30th, 2008 6:33 pm ET

Why do they refer to it as "retiring her campaign debt"?

She's looking for other people to pay her bills...when she has $110 million in the bank. Does this make sense to anyone outside of Washington?

OBAMA/ CLINTON or NO OBAMA. We need more than a slick talker with questionable judgment leading this country. With regard to Richardson, I certainly would not want him as a friend of mine, politics or no politics.

ben   July 30th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

She ran her campaign long after there was any hope that she could win.

She really blew it. She lost this thing when she built her narrative of inevitability. That is what destroyed her. And its corollary, not needing to have any plan after Super Duper Tuesday. Or any money.

Richpocket   July 30th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

She should do what Romney did. He took responsibility for his own campaign debt. and said he would take the hit So should she.

She ran her campaign long after her money ran out and now she wants others to pay for it??? NO WAY!!! Let's hope no-one shows up.

HarryRastaman   July 30th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

HEY RICHARDSON.....WHY DON'T YOU CONCENTRATE ON THE EVISCERATION OF OUR CONSTITUTION INSTEAD OF HELPING THE ENTITLED WHITE WOMAN WITH HE MILLION DOLLAR FORTUNE?

IDIOT.

Ken   July 30th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

You know it just donned on me that the C-lintons probably think that Richardson owes this help to them. They probably think he owes it to them to make up for his treachery. You will never catch a C-linton being grateful or sorry.

brenda   July 30th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

Why? Most of the money she needs reimbursed for was spent after she should have gracefully gotten out. She kept on loaning her money to her campaign - that was a choice she made. That is a bill she paid. It's over. He owes her nothing. He has a right to support whoever he wants for office. This whole bailout thing is ridiculous. Is everyone helping Romney with his bills??

colene   July 30th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

i hope the democrats unite so that we can win. the problem is no one can move on and forget the past. hilliary did not win and she mounted up a great deal of debt so i think first her puma supporters should send her the money they plan to spend to disrupt the democratic convention. put that money to good use. retire her debt.

Larry Kraus   July 30th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

I have had a very hard time understanding why anyone would help pay off this debt. Hillary Clinton knew when the race was over and she kept spending money to split the party right down the middle. i think that she kept fighting because she knew that in 4 years she would win the nomination if Obama was to lose this year. this country is in real danger the world was our best friend after 9/11 and this president wasted all of that by attacking Iraq. if all those women want to support Hillary Clinton then they should pay off that debt. Hillary Clinton has shown that if she can't win then she wants McCain to win so she can run in 2012. i say let Hillary pay that debt. where are all the people that want to help me pay off my debts. hell $40,000 to $50,000 would get me out of debt and i really am living on the edge. there's not millions in any account that i can take care of my wife and kids with.

benvictor   July 30th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

He cannot get rid of this Judas label, but it is considerate of him to help Hillary with her debt. As a Hillary Democrat, this does nothing to keep me in the party. Now part of John's silent majority, we wait patiently for the November election.

Sammy   July 30th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

I never did buy into the silly 'traitor' argument. This is politics. And so-called loyalty in politics only goes so far as whether or not it benefits someone. Carville should have said he was 'highly disappointed' or something similar. The word "traitor" is a word reserved for treason.

But then maybe he actually raised his right hand and swore a loyalty oath to the Clintons in addition to the United States?

Mikey   July 30th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

I suggested to my wife that we send Hillary $100 to help. I have been an Obama supporter since he announced. My wife backed Hillary. It got a little testy at home and I had to curb both my enthusiasm for Obama and my frustration at the Clintons.

Funny, though, when I made the suggestion, my wife said "absolutely no way". Seems she is ticked off at Hillary for staying in the race too long when it was obviously over, thus hurting the Dems chances in the fall, where I am ready to forgive, forget and move forward. Go figure.

I would like to encourage my fellow Obama supporters to make a donation to help Hillary. It's best for the party, best for Obama's candidacy, and therefore, best for our country. I may sneak some money over to her when my wife is not looking, just like I did for Obama in the primaries. Shhhhh, please don't tell her.

Jim   July 30th, 2008 6:15 pm ET

The democratic party and the obama campaign should help Hillary to pay off her campaign debt because it was the party leaders who shut her run for the nomination down in favor of Obama.
Bill Richardson I'm sure has his personal reasons for trying to help Hillary out......and remorse may be part of that.
Personally, I'm disappointed that Hillary, and possibly Bill, will be campaigning for Obama after his campaign tarnished their images by calling them racists. So absurd! Hillary proved herself, she was at times overshadowing Obama with her knowledge and presentations.
If she isn't offered the vp slot that I feel she has earned that will be another dissing of her by him. How much does the dem party expect of her?
Maybe she will run again in 2012. We will be there for her and the next campaign will be well organized.

The entire DNC including Governor Richardson, owe a lot more to the only Democratic hopeful for ruining her campaign and not letting the true vote of the American people count. Instead they chose to listen to our famed Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and force a delegate vote.
Now our country is faced with 2 potential Presidential candidates which most informed voters do not want to lead our country. Regardless of what all the OBAMA believers feel, there is an intelligent, and informed over 60 voter crowd who know a good candidate when they see one, and our country lost the only potential for leadership because of the DNC!

BH   July 30th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Bill Richardson did a lot of good things. A few days ago I saw a Nat Geo documentary which show him rescuing an american girl from Bangladesh prison. I respect him for that, and I used to like him a lot.

But I was furious and angry at him when he betrayed the Clinton's. Loyalty is a very important quality. My hero Harry Truman attended the funeral of the disgraced Pendergest, risking his own political career. Those qualities made Harry Truman the great honorable man he was.

May be governor Richardson realized, I hope he does, that he made a mistake. Or may be he finally saw what some of knew for a while that Obama is going to lose. Or may be he did not get offered the VP slot and want get back to the Clinotns. I hope that is not the case.

Some guy Cohen wrote a very interesting column few days ago. He asked a lot of democrats a name a few things done by Obama that they appreciate. They pointed to the great speech of 2004. They could not think of anything else. On the other hand, they named a few things Mccain did that they admire such as Mccain did not accept freedom in return for being used for communist propaganda, or his stand on finance reform etc.

What will happen? Will Obama win as Reagan did in 1980?
Or will he be Governor Dewy who lost to Harry Truman, an old man beaten by life but was hell of a guy.

RufusVonDufus   July 30th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

This is Obama's attempt at placating the feelings of the Clinton's over his huge trouncing of the witch. He is doing this so that Billary will campaign for him as they have not done so yet. Washington is the capital of the world when it comes to glad handing and backstabbing. It is worse than Hollywood. What a joke Obama, Richardson and the Clintons are! Obama will be second in November by a few miles. Whites are not going to vote for him. His wife alone lost him tons and tons of votes.

If Hilary owes $20 million or so, then that $10M is a nice start, rather than asking the public to bail out a rich lady during an economic downturn.

This is why I don't vote. Common sense cannot prevail in a nation where things like this happen.

Hypocrites, both of these guys.

Lynette   July 30th, 2008 6:00 pm ET

CNN should have entitled this article. " A Friend Comes to the Rescue" . Govenor Richardson is no Judas. James Carville went over the top by calling Govenor Richardson "Judas". I have relatives that I would not endorse for any office. That does not mean that I do not love them.

Senator Clinton would make a much better President than Senator McCain with one of her eyes closed and one of her hands tied behind her back. Hillary I'm for Barack, but show some backbone. Don't take handouts from the guys, do your own fundraising and stand on your own two feet.

You made a mistake by continuing with a race you mathematically couldn't win, and now show the world what you're made of–pay your own debt.

Seriously, the world is watching you.

Yellow Dog Democrat   July 30th, 2008 5:58 pm ET

I supported Hillary Clinton and I WILL help her pay off her campaign debt. Maybe she COULD have dropped out of the race sooner to avoid running up so much debt, but then again...I wasn't supporting a quitter. While Obama was not my first choice for the Democratic candidate, he will be getting my vote now. Any Democrat willing to vote for Clinton and not vote for Obama or willing to vote for Obama and not Clinton (had she been the nominee) may consider taking a closer look at their racist and sexist attitudes.

Democrats unite and stop the madness. If our country adding 4 trillion dollars to the national debt during the Bush administration doesn't get your attention...then what will? Oh...and by the way...we will ALL be paying that debt.

Let's tell our neighbors that John McCain is correct when he says Washington is broken. McCain is correct when he says he is experienced. He's been in Washington since Reagan. McCain and others of his kind are the very reason Washington is so broken. Let's let him take his leave along with the Bushes so that when a new day dawns in Washington, there will be new, young, smart people to move our country in a new direction, a direction of change and betterment.

Obama supporters are so dumb!!!

First of all most of the Americans that supported Hillary has a low income household and can't afford to help pay down Hillary debt. That's why she had to donate some of her own money to her campaign. Most of Obama supporters have money and health insurance and all of the above. Maybe that's why $30 was not a lot of money, and Maybe that's universal health care is not important to you.

Just because you have money doesn't mean you are better than anyone else. Maybe you can help buy Obama this election but you purchase the hearts of the true Americans.

Richardon recently demanded that the Obama campaign charter at a minimum, a G3 to fly him to Florida for an event. During a period when Obama's campaign is behind their fundraising goal by approximately 30 Million Dollars, Richardson demanded an overly expensive private jet. So much for being a team player! So much for caring about Global Warming! Is Richardson even a Democrat?

YOU think that we will follow whatever you say. WE are humans with independent thinking, and will not follow you. YOU are saying that McCain is wrong, but you are blind. You are not understanding Obama's plans. You are proud of Obama meeting with other leaders because he is a presumptive Democratic Nominee. Then let me ask you how you would feel if somebody who works with you and is in the lower position will come up to you and give you orders as if he/she was the CEO? Will you be happy? NO!!! Then don't expect PUMAs to follow you just because you believe that Obama is the greatest thing that has ever happened to the world.

There is no reason why Obama should have to help Hillary get out of debt. Since when is this a requirement to get the loser's voters?
This is wrong and should not be used to show some kind of party unity. They will vote for Obama if they want to. If they don't they don't. He will win anywyay.

No other candidates have had to do this in the past that I know of. Hillary knows better. She loaned out her own money herself. She should pay herself back, not us voters.

Jerry, Florida   July 30th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

American voters don't be fooled! Richardson’s got eyes on the vice presidential slot. He sold the Clintons over another hypocrite, Senator Obama. Therefore, the more he stays in the news, the better his chances for the vice presidential slot. I thought King Obama was a big hypocrite, but Bill Richardson beats him by miles. Next, he will start acting like the vice president to be. But what are you expecting; Obama was acting like the president of the US during his trip abroad. And worst of all, the idiots in the news media drank the "Obama Kool-Aid" and thanked him for it.

American voters don't be fooled. I have been a life-long Democrat, but I am going to weigh my choices very carefully. I hope you all will do the same.

The Clinton has more money than ninety nine percent of American. They are loaded. Paid off themselves! Money willl not satisfy them or their fanatic supporters. A tommy with a hole won't be filled by feeding.

Ed,Ellenville,New York   July 30th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

The Obamabots are just as nasty as ever. I'm sure they'll blame Hillary when Obama loses. They're sure making McCain happy. Hill paid Richardson's debt off the way a candidate is supposed to. Where's the cheapskate Obama's check ? His campaign is on the hook for this one.

Jesus   July 30th, 2008 5:42 pm ET

every four years we two politicians arepresented by the govt. they throw us red meat we all get riled up, we "elect" a president and then we feel satisfied with ourselves enough grind it out and keep the great economy going.

these people are all friends. make no mistake about it. you think old flyboy hates hussein that much? u are mistaken they are both members of one of the most exclusive club on the planet and both would rather hang out with each other than with you if push came to shove. . . .

Mark my words.

Tell me again why she went $20 MILLION in debt? Oh, yeah; once it was mathmatically impossible for her to win, she still kept on. Sorry, Hillary; pay back your own debt. You know, I have $3500 outstanding on my credit card– could someone help me out with that??

This is astonishing to me. The Clintons and her backers have dragged Richardson through the mud and are even going as far as forming alliances with McCain, a candidate who is the polar opposite of anything Clinton stands for. Now Richardson is helping HER pay off debt while her backers are refusing to help Obama and are pushing for McCain? Does anyone see what is wrong with this picture?

Jill in Chicago   July 30th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

I supported Hillary financially, in small doses, as many obama supporters continue to do, and I contributed to her campaign debt. I am continually amazed at Obama supporters, the way they blast fellow democrats. So I have not only put my money where my mouth is, I am voting where my heart is, not for Obama. As for Richardson... well done Senator! Just goes to show he is more interested in picking the right candidate for America than he is pandering to his friends. He just showed good judgement at the right time. The presidency is not a dynasty and the better candidate will come out on top!

Obama '08!!!

Renee   July 30th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Let me get this straight. Richardson served in Bill Clinton's cabinet, so he is honor bound to support Bill Clinton's wife 8 years later, even though he doesn't think she was the better candidate for the Demoncratic nominee? By that logic, anyone who serves during someone's presidency loses their right to vote their conscience.
Richardson spoke to Bill Clinton before he endorsed Obama, he explained the reasons for his decision to the Clintons, and only then did he endorse OBama publicly. That is hardly a "betrayal", despite what the Clinton machine wanted the public to believe. I work hard for my boss and we have a good relationship. Does that mean I'm a Judas if I don't support his wife's bid for City Council?

Despite John McCain’s presidential campaign pledge forbidding official favors for top donors, the Arizona senator has introduced legislation and heavily intervened to acquire lucrative deals for a wealthy longtime friend who has raised a quarter of a million dollars for him so far.

A major U.S. newspaper has documented in a lengthy piece the decades-long relationship between the 2008 Republican presidential candidate and a powerful Arizona developer who has made millions of dollars thanks to the senator’s efforts on behalf of the deals.

Without McCain’s aggressive intervention, millionaire Donald Diamond could not have made the deals which, in a few instances involved beneficial public-for-private land swaps and the actual remapping of public lands. McCain helped his friend acquire the valuable properties by introducing legislation in 1991 and 1994 on his behalf. The senator’s efforts led to multi million-dollar profits and the acquisition of thousands of acres in Arizona. McCain has sponsored a third similar bill that currently sits before the U.S. Senate.

In 1999 McCain helped Diamond purchase highly-sought yet forbidden California land owned by the Army, which he immediately sold for a $20 million profit. Then McCain got his buddy a lucrative contract to develop a resort hotel and luxury housing in 2005. These efforts certainly contradict McCain’s vows not to intercede with the government on behalf of a donor or take any action on their behalf that doesn’t serve the public’s interest.

TREP   July 30th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

I do not see how anyone can claim that McCain will protect American values. What values are you talking about? He has not held a firm position on anything except the surge. (We'll ignore that he has tacitly accepted Obama's 16 month time table, or is it a time horizon.) He has flipped on taxes and only recently embraced the Environment. He used to be against torture, but now is not. He talks about responsibility, but has not cast a vote since April 6th. He has promised to run an honorable campaign, but has not done so yet. I do not know what he stands for, except the surge in an ill-advised war. I want someone to defend McCain's ideas and show why they are superior to Obama's not just tear down a man whom you do not like.

Michele Hussein, Oregon   July 30th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

You who would call Richardson a "Judas", by what standard do you use that term. The Clinton's are not Jesus, and by defecting from her campaign, Richardson used his constitutional right to choose who he thought would be best for our nation. The fact that he is helping Hillary now shows me that he is a better man in the long run. Even if there are political implications, he is doing something admirable.

Lynn   July 30th, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Judas Richardson should crawl back into his hole. The Clinton's don't need him. Hillary's debt is either retired or close to being so. Richardson isn't going to be VP so he wants to cover his bases for 2012. Too late, he showed his true colors.

Nance   July 30th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

McCain has real values? Give me a break! He will keep us in a pointless war and continue to crash the American Economy. Realize that when Republicans are in office the only ones who benefit are Corporate America and the wealthiest one percent.
If someone called me a Judas ( even CNN) I'm not sure I could be so gracious.
I'm not saying that Obama would be the one to turn this country around, because after the damage done by the Bush Administration, it will take years to get us out of debt.
Personally, I think McCain is too old, and I think he would continue the wrong policies that have hurt America.

What an act to play to get Hillary to help Obama to get Hispanic vote. I hope that Hispanics will see through this and will avoid Obama at all costs. A proverb says: Friends are not bought. No matter how hard Gov. Richardson will try American people understand that he is doing this for two reasons:

1. To make sure that he will be re-elected when he runs for office again.
2. To help Obama get vote of Hispanic population.

I say "dream on".

Hillary lost because she 1) ran a sub-par campaign, 2) didn't have enough delegate VOTES to win in the end, and 3) couldn't change the rules in the bottom of the ninth inning no matter how hard she tried.

And the GREAT thing about it is, the rules she lost by were the very same rules that SHE PERSONALLY AGREED to back in Sept of 07.

There is truly something wrong with our election system and how it is financed. If a candidate ignores every indication that they have lost the primary and continues to spend money they don't have they should be responsible for paying off their own debt. I find it incredible that Richardson as been called upon to do this after how the Clinton's treated him.

Jan Illinois   July 30th, 2008 5:23 pm ET

This country has lost all sense of reality.

They should be kissing his butt for helping them at all. Hillary should spend her own money to retire debt instead of asking hard working Americans to bail her out. She's filthy rich....she should write a book about how she failed and got in debt.

This is politics at it's best or worst, depending upon how you look at it.
This kind of split-then-kiss-and-make-up stuff happens all the time.
Politicians are opportunists. They will use or lose each other depending upon whether they need each other or not. Hillary is no exception (neither is Obama for that matter). If Richardson can retire her debt, they'll be great old friends again. Politics isn't personal. It's business. Business can be rough as heck.

Remember, kids, this is about getting the most electable person into position to retake the White House. Who is most electable is a matter of opinion, but Richardson did what he thought was right for the Democratic Party. And he's still doing what he thinks is right.

Nick, NY   July 30th, 2008 5:20 pm ET

Richardson might just be showing some maturity and team-spirit that hopefully will serve as a lesson to others in this country.

#4) Both Richardson and Obama are 'Judas'

I am so tired of reading these blogs. I went away for a month, I come back and people are still stupid. Hillary Clinton has every right to ask her supporters to help pay down her campaign debt. I have donated to the max. Hillary is not asking for her personel loan to be re-paid, a wish more people would learn the facts. Also, Hillary Clinton helped pay-off campaign debts from several of the other failed campaigns, no one had an issue when she gave help. I wish, just once, before you people write , you would actually do some research and get your facts straight. Most of the issues in this campaign have been caused by supporters spouting off false facts as true and bloggers who feel that whatever they say must be true. God help us..the internet should be a tool to connect people, as I see it, its the biggest tabloid ever created.

Bill Richardson is partially to blame for the nomination being taken away from Mrs. Clinton, so perhaps it is appropriate that he help her pay down her debt. However, after stabbing her in the back, I hardly think that anyone would fall for his fake call for party unity. Mr. Richardson and Mr. Obama are much alike, a false façade hiding an empty soul.

The new O-DNC should pay off Mrs. Clinton’s debts and apologize to her for tossing her in the trash bin.

Mr. Richardson worked for Mr. Clinton. His loyality was not to Mrs. Clinton. Mr. Carville was totally out of line for the comments he made. This shows that Mr. Richardson is a better person. Mr. Carville should take heed. Hopefully, Mr. Carville will be a generous donor.

Ardnuas   July 30th, 2008 5:13 pm ET

This is GREAT news....... we NEED unity in the Democratic Party for Obama to win in NOVEMBER. We NEED Hillary to become Majority Leader.

CR   July 30th, 2008 5:12 pm ET

Thank you Governor Richardson for helping the Clinton Campaign!
Thank you Senator Clinton for your Democratic unity!

Yes WE Can UNITED together!
DEMOCRATES UNITED are unstoppable!

Mike, Syracuse, NY   July 30th, 2008 5:12 pm ET

Every dollar in Clinton's pocket is one less in Obama's pocket.

Wes   July 30th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

My question is: What fiscally responsible person spends $20 million that they don't have??

I spent too much on my credit card, can someone help me pay off my $5000 debt?? I provide drinks and fingerfoods!

Rick FL   July 30th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

Thank you Gov. Richardson

As an Obama supporter, I also donated to Clinton's campaign and plan to make another contribution next month. Can "PUMA" say the same? I hope so but tend to think that was not part of Rush Limbaugh's instructions. LOL

It's admirable that true supporters of Democratic principles work together to help each other. I commend all of those respectful efforts by Richardson, Clinton, Obama, etc.

James   July 30th, 2008 5:11 pm ET

Whyare they having fundraisers to retire her debt? It was her choice to spend the money in the first place. If politicians care so much about the American people they should have a fundraiser for a valid cause that is much more far reaching than one person's bank account. I'm sure the Clinton's will be fine with a bit of effort and honest work. It seems they aren't used to being in debt, like 80% of the rest of us are.

EDW   July 30th, 2008 5:10 pm ET

THEY didn't call Richardson a Judas that James Carville from Courage the Cowardly Dog called him a Judas. This shows that the Democrats are trying to do what is absolutely necessary to take over the White House.

Me Too!   July 30th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

How about a party for me to retire some debt I incurred trying to set up a business.

Get to work on it Richardson.

Freida, NYC   July 30th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

Hummm... I guess Richarson is now feeling guilty after his Judas act.

CM   July 30th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

When all the Dems unite and make a push for the WH after summer then all the petty remarks will be forgotten.

I for one can't wait for the Convention so the handful or so of PUMAS can pipe down and vote for whoever else they want and stop hoping for Hillary to stage a floor fight. That kind of stuff is for soap operas, not for presidential candidates.

dan   July 30th, 2008 5:08 pm ET

why not give money to your constituants?
how and who did you get this money from. fat cats that overcharge for all we buy.
how naive we are to think all of this give away money is not part of what regular americans are paying for every day.
here in nevada sierra pacific power just bought and donated light bulbs the new kind, to stores so we could go buy them. would i not stand a better chance of buying these things if i were not overcharged for their services to begin with? let me save my money. operate your own business. dont give me handouts that i have already paid for!!!!

ArtNYC   July 30th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

Why do people raise money for the Clinton debt which is mostly so she can take her personal loan out. Basically the people are giving money to Hillary cuz she really needs it. The $10mm Bill alone made last year is not enough.

Democrat leaders should be ashamed of themselves for asking people to do that.

Biffington, Biff   July 30th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

It's good for the Democratic party. I commend the New Mexico Governor for being 'bigger' than those surrogates who castigated him during the primary season.

ShirleyY - Seattle   July 30th, 2008 5:06 pm ET

HEY RICHARDSON, BILL MADE 10 MILLION, IF YOU ARE GOING TO DO FUNDRAISERS, DO THE FUNDRAISERS AND GIVE TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE FOR GAS MONEY.

Young African American Male for Hillary   July 30th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

Too little too late Bill Richardson. Trying to buy favors now aren't you? I guess you want to jump ship before this Obama ship finally sinks. We won't forget what you did Bill Richardson. You didn't have too. Al Gore didn't do what you did.

Bill Richarson is a backstabber. This is just another slap in the face of Hillary's supporters. I urge all to vote for McCain in November. The democratic party does not value our votes so let's show them.

MMN-Milwaukee WI   July 30th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

Simply put, these are the distraction that the DEM Party doesn’t need and I could care less for Hillary and her campaign debts, I have debts of my own and exercise fiscal discipline at best, America is bigger than the Clintons. Besides Billy boy racked in 10M+ in 2007 just making speeches. Nuff said.

Will, NJ   July 30th, 2008 5:03 pm ET

Almost 2 months since the last contest and she still has a debt?

California Gold   July 30th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

Richardson was taken to task for his decision to support Obama, especially by James Carville calling Richardson's decision Judas betraying Christ (I won't even get started on that parallel). That was a very nasty time in the primary and Richardson managed to stay above the fray. So thumbs up to Gov. Richardson on his vow to host a couple fund raisers for Mrs. Clinton. To me his actions speak well, despite the loooong weeks he was in the Clinton cross hairs.

John   July 30th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

Hillary is like a Republican. Run her mouth. Spend, Spend, Spend. Go in Debt!!!! Ha ha ha

April Garlow   July 30th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

Richardson is the lowest of the low–he could hand Hillary the money out of his own pocket and I would still be repulsed by him.

Richard Conn Henry   July 30th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

Good for Bill Richardson!

BarackDVote   July 30th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

Hillary Debt 2012   July 30th, 2008 5:01 pm ET

In 2012, Hillary will still be in Debt!!!

Her supportors want her to run in 2012, but they aren't willing to pay off 2008??????

That's how hypocritical Hillary and her supportors are lol.

karen-phoenix   July 30th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

PUMAS-- They are all coming together to save the United States of America from another Bush administration!!! It is American's only hope for a future. If Obama doesn't win I'm moving to Canada along with my friends and family. Canadians seem to be doing quite well.

Don of Fairfax   July 30th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

WHAT NERVE . . . I am sure the Clinton's are holding off announcing Hillary's latest book deal so they can effectively fleece the flock. It was just disclosed Bill earned approximately $20M over the last 2-years making speeches . . . charging $150K to the Boys and Girls Club of LA . . . not to forget the around the clock security the American tax payer provides . . . SHAME ON YOU ! ! !

Danny G. Boca Raton, FL   July 30th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

this more like gossip than real news... I'm Glad Gov. Richardson is providing the help for Sen. Clinton, I'm sure she is grateful but I don't see the value of pounding the guy over the comments made in the past.
let's move on shall we... too bad I don't live in New Mexico... I would of attented...

Charles   July 30th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Richardson must have gotten word that he will not have any part of Obama's cabinet.

tlatexaspuma   July 30th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Governor Richardson's isn't allowed to speak for himself. Bill Burton, a spokesman for Barack Obama’s campaign release Richardson statement. Of course these people have a honest reputation. Talk about control. Wonder if Richardson has to ask to go to the bathroom?

Psbro   July 30th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Nothing will change what Richardson has done. Hope he raises a lot of money for Hillary & slithers back into the hole that Obama drug him of.
He still is a Judas & will forever be known as such. His 30 pieces of silver will not be what he expects. He will join the others Obama has thrown under the bus. As soon as he is no longer needed, he will join Rev. Wright, Obama's grandmother, Jesse & the rest of fawners.

sarah   July 30th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Glad to see the unity. I like both Clinton and Obama. They only had a difference in 3 Senate votes, out of voting on over 1000 items.
Hopefully the PUMAs will vote on the issues, and not on the person because I am one of many that like both OBAMA and CLINTON.
At least one of them will win in 2008

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   July 30th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

Another Clinton Failure!

Couldn't keep her mouth shut!
Couldn't manage her campaign!
Couldn't manager her finances!

She disappears attack everyone who beat them, just like Hillary did in the race. But none of them are willing to put their MONEY where there Mouths are!!!!

Richardson shouldn't have to help her! Not after the way her and her supportors treated him

Paul - Seattle   July 30th, 2008 4:58 pm ET

I think the more we understand just how dangerous McCain would be as President, the more the Democrats will really come together as we all understand it's more important to work toward the future than concentrate on frustrations of the past. I am happy to see Richardson, someone whom I have great respect for, attempt to help Senator Clinton...a woman whom I also have an immense amount of respect for.

Democrats unite! Obama '08!!!!!

ABOUT OBAMA:

1. Everybody who is NOT a snob senses that something is not exactly O.K. with that so called "New Politician".
I see him like my doughier: tells me exactly what I would like to hear.

I think that Guy and his gang had studied the social behaviour in USA long before had started the elections and they simply manipulate us very effectively!
Simply: DO NOT TRUST HIM!!!!

2. No offence, but am I correct that OBAMA is very much supported and loved by HOMOSEXUALS?

/ Not because I do not respect them as human beings/

3. His color is NOT my concern but his attitude : HE IS ARROGANT!
e.g. Is it appropriate a future President to chew a gum walking as a peacock at front of the cameras?

4. If he is "sooo gifted" and almost genius, what he had done for 45 years before the beginning of that election?

And what a joke that one can run their campain with no funds and then after they lose ask people to help them retire the debt. Come on, the rest of us can't run our lives that way what makes it ok for someone running for office to do that?

And when we have a country that is struggling with huge debts and our citizens are going through a resession, how do any of the candidates warrant spending these huge amounts of money?

What happened to voting for the person who was best qualified, not the person who could raise the most money. One would get plenty of free press if they were doing good things so it's not necessary to pay for ads when one can just do instead.

Come on America, wake up and demand more.

Independent Voter   July 30th, 2008 4:57 pm ET

Who does Obama think he is, taking credit for Bill Richardson's willingness to help Hillary Clinton with her campaign debt??

Does this man have any limits whatever? Is there anything for which he will NOT take credit??

Richardson obviously realizes how very badly he behaved, since he owes his entire career to the Clintons, both of them. Nobody ever heard of Bill Richardson until Clinton appointed him to his cabinet. No one knows that better than Bill Richardson.

Of course he should help her. Obama should, too, but he's too busy being the Darling of the Media to take time for that. Obama lives in $1+ million dollar house himself. Over half of his campaign funds come from huge contributors – check the list, boys and girls – you little guys are buying his coffee – oh, I mean his Perrier.

Two over-rated books later, Barack and Michelle have really struck it rich! "Movin' on up to the East Side. Finally gettin' a piece of the pie," as the song goes...

Hillary Never!!!   July 30th, 2008 4:56 pm ET

Hillary NEVER thought she would lose!
Hillary NEVER thought anyone could beat her!
Hillary NEVER thought her supportors would stop giving her money!
Hillary NEVER thought she would lose her own money!
Hillary NEVER thought her type of politics could lose!

Hillary just NEVER THOUGHT!!!!!

Hillary will NEVER be President!!!!
Hillary will NEVER be VIce President!!!!

She still crys about it, and so do her supportors. But none of them are willing to PAY off their Debt!!!!

Instead they expect everyone else to pay for their MISTAKES!

NEVER HILLARY 08
NEVER HILLARY 12

Well I will give credit where credit is do and Thank Mr Richardson.
It however does not change my view of how unfair this primary process is or how the democratic party snub Hillary for a inexperienced sweet talker with no record of accomplishments and virtually no time in elected office. I stil question Bill Richardsons intregrity for endorsing this man particuliarly as hard as Richardson has worked and his resume of accomplishments. You would think that he would value action and results over talk.

Not Falling in Line
Mc 08'/ Hillary 2012 Maybe then he will endorse her properly

You know if Richardson goes on the ticket as VP to Obama, he could win some major point with growing Latino population in the states, enough to really put a big boost into Obama's lead.

Add in his knowledge of the energy crisis and the undecided nature of New Mexico and he might be a great pick!

I beg your pardon? The real Judas is George Bush, who has betrayed the American People repeatedly in his last 8yrs. The real Judas is the media CNN included who betray who they want to when the want to and why they want to. even if its just to keep a story. The real Judas is any Democrat who votes for McCain because they cant accept the Hillary's loss in the Primaries, I mean come on a vote for McCain is against all that you hope for in America. Wake up my American People, wake up. The real Judas is not voting for Obama because he's half black, remember he is Half white so you are probably doing yourself a dis-service too. The real Judas is the American people who sat by while we sent over 4,000 GI's to their death for a lie, and over 25,000 permantely wounded. Wake up my American People Wake Up.

Gary of El Centro, Ca   July 30th, 2008 4:51 pm ET

It's big of Richardson to step up like this, especially after all the flak he got from the Clintons after he came out in support of Obama. I still think Richardson should be seriously considered for the VP spot.

Everyone’s energy and resources should be spent to elect a president, senators, congress people and other offices in November -not worrying about the debt of a dead campaign. Don’t get me wrong…I admire and respect Sen. Clinton but we are in the midst of a fierce fight here! Why do we have to bail out a multi millionaire??? We have to get the majority in both houses and elect a president and we need every single dime.

Joe Unger (San Francisco)   July 30th, 2008 4:49 pm ET

Seems to me this is Richardson trying to play both sides. He pissed off the Clintons so now he is trying to make amends. He also thought Obama would get the nomination so that's why he bailed on the Clintons. Typical politics.
And what is this "clinging to the throne" crack? Bush has been president for the last 8 years. His comment doesn't make sense except as a snide retort to criticism.

R   July 30th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

he just want her gone out of the picture so he can get a chance for the VP slot

Steve Green   July 30th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Are you kidding me? Why would Hillary allow this traitor to "help" her out?

David, Silver Spring, MD   July 30th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

Bill Richardson has nothing to "make up." He endorsed Obama, as was his right. It was the Clinton camp, through James Carville, that got all bent out of shape about it. Carville, in churlish and childish fashion, cried that Richardson had "betrayed" Clinton. Richardson, by any objective standards was acting in a wholly proper manner.

If anyone needs to "kiss and make up," it's the Clinton people who need to apologize to Richardson.

A Nightingale Sings in Berkley Square   July 30th, 2008 4:48 pm ET

I am glad that Judas is helping the Clintons out I certainly did and will continue to help the Clintons.

She is my kind of candidate. A close second is Mr. McCain. obama doesn't even make the "B" list. Don't know why Mr. Dean and company selected a candidate that can't win. I am shocked.

Obama and Larry Craig. now that is a pair. Both won the state of Idaho and both are in the state of denial.

Hillary won the coasts from CA to Texas to Florida to MA, And she won the Mid West. Now tell me again what states Obama won to get the Nomination for POTUS? I am aghast.

Vote for McCain, a candidate we can trust with our values. A candidate that all Americans can rely on to safeguard our values and our American way of life. i just don't trust Obama to do the right thing.
Do you?

Hillary and her Supportors should all put their Money behind their Big Mouths!!!!!!

Dominic   July 30th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

She spends this much money on a campaign...and then people are going to bail her out? I say...use that money to help needy people!!! How about a fundraiser for that?

James   July 30th, 2008 4:46 pm ET
