McCain talked with CNN's John King Thursday.

(CNN) - John McCain told CNN Thursday it is fair for his campaign manager to claim Barack Obama is playing 'the race card.'

Watch McCain: Obama's playing the race card

"I'm sorry to say that it is. It's legitimate," McCain told CNN's John King. "And there's no place in this campaign for that. There's no place for it and we shouldn't be doing it."

Earlier Thursday, McCain campaign manager Rick Davis lashed out at the Democratic presidential candidate over his comments that Republicans are making an issue of his race.

"Barack Obama has played the race card, and he played it from the bottom of the deck. It's divisive, negative, shameful and wrong," Davis said in a statement sent to reporters.

An Obama spokesman immediately denied the assertion, but noted that the presumptive Democratic nominee believes that the McCain campaign was “using the same old low-road politics to distract voters from the real issues.”

At three stops in the battleground state of Missouri, Obama told audiences that his opponent is trying to make voters “scared” of him because he doesn’t look like past presidents – an apparent reference to being black — and has a “funny name.”

Please, Let's not confuse:

GoBama with Go Bama. I like my football team waaaay more

There has got to be a movie made about this election.

Having heard the entire Obama speech that contained the "race card" line (thank you, POTUS '08 on XM), I can say that it was clear that he was trying to be humorous while making a point about the Republicans attempting to make Americans afraid of Obama, since they aren't making any headway on the issues. In retrospect, it may not have been the smartest attempt at humor, but the fact is that the commercial was offensive – if the point was to show someone famous, why not use Mel Gibson or Kevin Costner? I thought he showed great restraint in not losing his temper and lashing out at McCain on a personal level. Watching McCain foolishly stand by the commercial only reminds me of Bush foolishly standing by some of his more ludicrous statements, acting as if he repeats it enough, we'll start to believe him. Vote for Change!!!

Chuck   July 31st, 2008 9:22 pm ET

Isn't fearing "the politics of fear" also just another version of same 'ol politics? Obama is scaring votes his way, and he is playing from the old politics handbook like a pro.

That just makes him an even sleazier hypocrite. I just wish more of America saw through the sheep's clothing

QG   July 31st, 2008 9:17 pm ET

John McSane,

Please stop wasting time of the American people! Come up with a campaign strategy and campaign! Tell the people of your strategy, your plans, what you will achieve!

This is not campaigning, this is grabbing at straws. Your trying to find something that works!

Bill, Covington   July 31st, 2008 9:14 pm ET

Let's get right to the facts, "I'm racist and G.. D... proud of it" and I'll vote for the caucasian male candidate.
You people for the other thing better prepare yourself for what will follow the election if he is not the chosen one on Nov.4th. It won't be pretty.

Sam   July 31st, 2008 9:13 pm ET

I would never ever vote for a man over seventy for president. I am 71 and I know what I am talking about. I especially wouldn't vote for such a mean and ugly party as the republicans appear to have. If one has to elect a president by how disgusting their negative ads are then we ARE definitely heading in the wrong direction. I will always vote for a calm, intelligent thinker over an airhead.

Pat M   July 31st, 2008 9:10 pm ET

If Mc Cain is grovelling already and having to use such lame tactics what will he do this Fall? He needs a new perspective. One that concentrates on the issues not pettiness and devisive inane tactics.
They say we resort back to our childhood when we grow old. McCain it proving it.

The recent indictment of one of their longstanding senetors proves that.... SO ARE THEY ABOVE USING RACETACTICS AGAINST AN OPPOSING CANDIDATE....? NO...

McCain - Never Gonna Give U Up   July 31st, 2008 8:57 pm ET

Take two steps back and look at McCain. The most horribly run campaign in US history. It's got it all – Negativity, Super-gaffe marathon, green-screen challenged, calling a person of color racist, a rather small candidate with no platforms to stand on (unless you count his flip-flops), war, and the ever present Big Oil scenery looming behind him and in his 'plans for success' (maybe their's).

This could be comedy at its very best. But there are people who are actually drinking this up as reality. ONLY in America!

WE ALL KNOW IT IS ABOUT RACE - NOTHING ELSE!

McCain 08   July 31st, 2008 8:47 pm ET

Barrack Obama is continuing to do the same thing he has all campaign season since he started and that is play the race card. In the democratic primary, everyone was way to scared to say it for the fear of being called a racist. Well times have changed and Obama will be called out for what he is doing by John McCain. McCain is not scared of Obama.
There is a reason the polls are tightening in Ohio, Penn and Michigan. People are starting to pay attention to the race and realizing what is at stake

Miranda   July 31st, 2008 8:47 pm ET

People supporting John McCain are those that are seeking the good ole days of 1932.

Texans for Obama   July 31st, 2008 8:42 pm ET

Forget McCain and company. What race card? Just because Obama said he doesn't look like past Presidents on money? He is just telling it like it is. If you listened to conservative radio they talk about Obama being "uppity" This means this black man should stay in his place who does he think he is? No one said anything about the uppity word. Which is race baiting. Obama is being bashed by fox, conservative radio and TV hosts, and fighting against the Republican party. McCain is just "chillin". They barely say anything about the "old geezer".

McCain complains about everything Obama does or does not do. McCain is a big joke!. This man is too old to run this country we already had 8 yrs of a stupid man running this country. I don't want another 4 more yrs of another dummy that was a "D" student in college as President. So people need to stop hating on Obama. One thing about it he is the most intelligent , articulate man for the job and he is not senile like McCain. He doesn't need experience he has good judgement. John needs to retire and is too old to answer the phone at 3am. YES WE CAN AND WILL!

Mark   July 31st, 2008 8:41 pm ET

Obama never said that McCain was playing the race card. He said "they", as in supporters of Bush and McCain, were. And I don't see how you can deny that – I've seen tons and tons of ignorant trolls on the internet and on talk radio and network news smearing Obama as a "militant black", "black racist", and "secret Muslim", and linking his name to Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein, and talking about his alleged "ties" to terrorists and black supremacists.

CNN is displaying journalism unprofessionalism in falsely claiming that Obama accused "his opponent" – John McCain – of those things.

Carl Justus   July 31st, 2008 8:40 pm ET

McCain will play the race card just like the republicans play it in the south to keep the south solid in the republican corner.
The republicans have mastered playing the race card in the southern state so they will vote solid republican, but that may change this year with Georgia and maybe even North Carolina going for Obama.

anne   July 31st, 2008 8:39 pm ET

McCain is right on drilling . What will we do five years from now, walk.
If you like to eat what are you going to do when the diesel trucks stop hauling your produce, meat ,toliet paper, etc. There is no way for electric cars to make 600-800 miles in one day on overnight charge.
Hydrogen and fuel cell have been underdeveoplement for over 30 years, President Carter inagular parade had a fuel cell powered cadallic in it. Allis Chalmers had a fuel cell tractor in 1958, was not practical. Drill now and go ahead and develope the rest, but for the time being oil is are only way to get the country by.

I know why no ones pissed, it's okay to disrespect a White woman, but you dare not say anything negative about Black women or your a racists. All women, should be out -raged by these remarks. But wait she's Sen. Clinton, you can say mean and evil things about, why ? BECAUSE SHE'S WHITE

Does he not have guts to do so, instead he is harping to stop offshore drilling, because all his "friends", Edwards, Kennedy have bunglows near the scenic Ocean drives, Right Mr Bama ?? Corrup the is from bottom

Jamie   July 31st, 2008 8:32 pm ET

I can't believe some of the opinions on here. How blind are some of you people. If I were to use the "n" word I would be called racist because I'm white but it is acceptable for black people to use it amongst themselves.

So? Obama isn't playing the race card when he tells people that "Obama told audiences that his opponent is trying to make voters “scared” of him because he doesn’t look like past presidents". Have we also forgotten that just prior to wrapping up the primary that Obama referred to his race specifically in a similar statement? He said "They're going to try and scare you by saying that I'm inexperienced. They're going to say I'm a Liberal. They're going to tell you I'm black"? Do your research and check it out.

After you all review all of this, don't think of these words as if they were coming from Obama, think of the as if they were coming out of my mouth or another white persons mouth. I'll bet you those comments would be racist should they come out of my mouth.

Unshrub   July 31st, 2008 8:31 pm ET

Let's get this right; McCain is complaining about Obama fighting dirty.

Eight years ago McCain was a nice guy, someone I wanted to win the White House, now he has become a pig in politics. He is the reason we need someone like Obama, someone new. McCain has become more personal against Obama than any other Presidential candidate in American history. I now despise the pig. He does not deserve to be treated with the respect one should give a Presidential candidate or a war hero. His actions since he left the service leave a lot to be desired, starting with the Keating Five. I am also starting to despise those who support him. For the record, I have not voted for a Democratic President since I started voting, starting with Richard Nixon, but I will this time, and I am going to give him lots of money. It is time for change and McCain is demonstrating he is not the one to do it.

LINDA   July 31st, 2008 8:31 pm ET

The Straight Talk Express has taken a nasty turn into the gutter. Sen. John McCain has resorted to lies and distortions in what sounds like an increasingly desperate attempt to slow down Sen. Barack Obama by raising questions about his patriotism. Instead of taking the Democrat down a few notches, these baseless attacks are raising more questions about the Republican's campaign and his ability to control his temper.

The most offensive line comes from McCain himself. The Arizona senator has repeated that Obama "would rather lose a war in order to win a political campaign." That is one of the more outrageous statements by a major political party candidate seeking the presidency. The looming choices about the long-festering war in Iraq are not between winning and losing but about how quickly or slowly the United States can reduce its military forces without jeopardizing recent security gains. Even McCain acknowledges that, and insulting Obama in such a reckless way is not presidential.

That is only one example of the darker tone enveloping the McCain campaign since several of Karl Rove's acolytes took the wheel. A new McCain ad suggests that while Obama traveled abroad last week he "made time to go to the gym but canceled a visit with wounded troops. Seems the Pentagon wouldn't allow him to bring cameras." That's a compelling punch line, but it's below the belt.
That's intense. McCain chose this path. He sold whatever was left of his soul to the Rove machine. It was a risky decision and it sure doesn't look like it's paying off. Instead, in the past few weeks, McCain has completely reshaped his image. He's become another puppet of Karl Rove, just like George Bush.

And, the Obama campaign decided to fight back with a new ad, "Low Road," documenting just some of independent sources criticism of McCain — and linking McCain to the candidate he's morphed into — George Bush: John McCain how much lower can you go. And your wife will be working with CASTRO GET REAL MAN…WE DON`T WANT COMMANDER WITH CASTROL IN THERE POCKET….GEEZ

joseph   July 31st, 2008 8:30 pm ET

Only an idiot wouldn not agree that Obama has played the "race card" all through the primaries, negating the most qualified candidate (Hillary Clinton) with his "bottom-of-the-deck" - as well as dirty Chicago politics - tactics.

The ENTIRE basis for the Obama campaign is that he is black and should be elected as the first "black" president (because "it's time" to elect a "black president" ?????).

But not all of us agree. I, for one, have no problem with a black candidate (e.g., would love to see Colin Powell or Condi Rice run - because they demonstrate true leadership ability rather than blatherings) - BUT Obama is GREEN! THAT is the ONLY color I see when it comes to Obama.

And I really don't care a diddly-wink what the Obamabots call me ("racist," of course - because anyone who doesn't agree with Obama is a "racist"). THAT has been Obama's greatest impact! NOTHING else!

rexx   July 31st, 2008 8:19 pm ET

Hilary wasn't the only one with a computer. You are the one who needs to dig a little deeper. Feel free to write in but try to get things correct. To be sure, Hilary's folks made an issue of his race and religion but they weren't the only ones. John McCain himself may not be making this an issue but his people, everywhere, are.

Obama plays the race card, the blue collar card, the Jew card, the senior card, the women card, the Latino card – any card he can get his power-driven hands on. We all know that 99% of Blacks are voting for him. Isn't this racist? Voting for someone based on skin color – listen to all those vulgar rappers – Obama's their man. This is disgusting. Had a white pop singer sang trash about Obama – we would have Al Sharpton marching in the street and cries of racism all over the place. Why is White America tolerating this reverse racism?

Jonathan, Hartford, CT   July 31st, 2008 8:10 pm ET

This is the first time he did it, but he pulled the race card for no reason. There was NOTHING racist about the McCain ad. Again, too emotional and too defensive. Go to a psychiatrist and get the right chemicals for your imbalance. Calm down. Relax. Take deep breaths. If someone used racism against you, everyone will let them know, but you are imagining things this time. You are acting emotional and NOT presidential.

McCain is acting like he doesn't have anything to say that's worth hearing, so covers that fact with a lot of negative comments about Obama. McCain is really lowering himself or possibly revealing the real John McCain that shouldn't even be considered for the office of President of the United States. He doesn't sound up to it considering his lack of maturity or ability. He just doesn't come across as even intelligent.

My god, I am so sick of Obama and his campaign whining about race. Every time there is anything negative he goes right to the racist thing. Obama is the one who plays the race card, he did it against Hillary Clinton and now he is doing it against McCain. Is this what we can expect four years of listening to him whine about how he is picked on because he's black. Seriously, he is running for President, how much prejudice can he face, he is running for the most important job in the world. It's time for the Obama campaign to grow up, and accept that not everyone wants to vote for him. As a Democrat, I would vote for anyone over Obama.

McCAIN'S CAMP HAVE SLYLY PLAYED THE RACE CARD.

I really rather not go there. Too many people have played that card frivolously. But somebody has to say it, because it is most appropriate and true and the right time.

The false "arrogance" accusation against Obama is old Jim Crow for "uppity negro". McSame''s supporters over 50-years old know this, as do older Hillary''s supporters. As a reminder it was the Clinton campaign that first leveled the bogus charge, when we all know Obama has been the most humble and gracious Christian nominee in generations.

Obama has been hounded to go dirty, to return lies for lies. But he remained above board, first with Hillary and now with McCain. And with utter humility Obama showed Hillary respect and acknowledged her leadership as a model for his two girls. This while Hillary was throwing everything at him including the "kitchen sink". If Obama was arrogant, he would have told Hillary where to jump off when the "Delegate Math" was in his favor back in March. If Obama was arrogant, why would he turn down a high paying Chicago law job for something as unpromising as community organizer?

People, this "arrogance" thing is a horrible lie with its roots back in the Jim Crow days when a Black man that could read and write and think was considered an "uppity negro".

Fortunately, a lot of people over 50 are turning from the Jim Crow ways and are starting fresh. While our young are refusing to buy into the racist ways of old.

I actually had liked McCain once upon a time. Admittedly I was looking to vote for Obama when I first heard that he would be in this election. I was wishing that he would have run against "W" in '04. It doesn't change the fact that I had honestly liked McCain a whole lot and felt that his politics were progressive and smart. Now I see a man who I do not recognize at all. What happened? Why so much back tracking? Why does this man who once opposed Bush sound so much like him now.

There was a time when I thought that this election was win win and now I'm no longer a believer in this. If McCain wins this one, it will be utter garbage for us all. You guys need to pay attention to the actual facts and stop listening to the yellow journalism and other garbage.

I heard the full recording from the Racine speech – and I was appalled at the lies McCain said throughout the speech. He said several blatant lies that have already been debunked in the press – but he said them anyway. So either he doesn't care that they're lies, or he's oblivious that they're lies. He said that Obama voted to raise taxes on people earning as low as $32,000, and he said that Obama wanted to remove troops from Iraq within 16 months regardless of any conditions on the ground. These have been debunked in public already, but McCain has no problem saying these lies again. I am apalled at how low McCain has sunk in his desperate attempt to malign his opponent.

Yes, McSame finally starts to show his true colors. Here is the pitiful excuse for a man that cheated on and divorced his injured wife. Here is the hot-head blow hard that is more full of his "maverick" image than his lock-step conservative voting record shows. Here is the disgraced Keating bag boy that pretends to be humbled and above such low-level politicking these days.

Keep rolling out the negativity, John, so the American voters can see the truth: a shallow politician like the current president that they really don't want to vote for again.

To all the racists who posts Barack "H" Obama to imply that Barack is a terrorist, TIMOTHY IS A LOCAL TERRORIST. Does it mean all "TIMOTHY'S" ARE TERRORISTS ? Go figure.

The conservative neocons and the closet racists were shocked to see the unprecedented reception Obama received in foreign lands. They are bitter because a half white man can energize the whole planet.

McCain is ignorant. He attacks Obama by using race. However, when Obama defends himself, he wants to say he is using the race card. McCain your a desperate. I don't want you as a leader. Learn how to use the internet.

Also can you enlighten all of us not-so-enlightened Obama voters with what it means when you say the McCain campaign is getting "fully elementary?"
As for your guy getting us out of Iraq...only one thing to say....Afghanistan...
Obama's reality will bite his blind followers!

Kenny   July 31st, 2008 7:48 pm ET

I am an Obama supporter and as much as it pains me to say this, Obama did in fact play the race card in the speech he gave. He would have been just fine with the speech had he not mentioned that "he does not look like the other presidents on the dollar bills". I have herd all of what he commented on either from the McCain campaign or it’s surrogates except the reference to him looking like other presidents on the dollar bill. Now the few negative ads I have seen from the Obama campaign have been very subtle but this one was out right wrong. I hope he will acknowledge the fact that he made a mistake and apologizes for it and then reverts back to the high road. Leave McCain in the gutter and let him sling all the mud he wants. Senator Obama is a better candidate than all of that.

lil   July 31st, 2008 7:47 pm ET

'Cards' is a game and now McCain is playing his own game of race-baiting. The name of the game that he is playing is called the Race Card.

Eugene   July 31st, 2008 7:45 pm ET

Sen. Obama won the primary by avoiding the lows taken against him. He will continue to follow that winning strategy while pointing out exactly where Sen. McCain is killing his chances by insulting the voters' intelligence.

Peter (CA)   July 31st, 2008 7:44 pm ET

I thought McCain was above this but I should not be surprised.

I keep hearing about Obama playing the "race card". How? By being born dark skinned? As to his statement that the other side will point out he does not look like past presidents-it's true, they have. Hillary did it towards the end of the primaries and the Republicans have pulled it out too.

I hope that the voters see through this tripe.

Marc PDX   July 31st, 2008 7:42 pm ET

How can Obama be part of the ruling elite while still acting like a victim? He's a rock star who attracts 200,000 in Berlin and needs a football stadium to accept the DNC nomination. Then he turns around and acts like a victim the next day. If his campaign is going to play the race card then they are the racists! Hillary was rolled over by the race card but it's time for it to come to an end. It is UNTRUE that everyone who is going to vote against Barack Obama is a racist. Stop it!

Frank Canada   July 31st, 2008 7:42 pm ET

I can't understand why John McCain would allow his campaign to be so inept and useless. Someone on his staff must have convinced him to just go negative as your positives just won't cut it.

I don't know if McCain is as useless as his campaign has projected him but any middle of the road Republican must already be in a political transition. After all it's their country and future as well.

An American   July 31st, 2008 7:42 pm ET

McCain is so transparent, he is just opening the door so he can play the race card. Not falling for it, not this time. Say no to McCain, this is your brain, this is your brain on McCain... sizzzle...

I'm not defending what Obama said, because "they" (the Republicans) will try to paint him exactly as he stated. I believe where the flaw may have come in is if he said, specifically, that McCain would say these things. As an African-American, though, I will say, as the old folks used to say, "A HIT DOG WILL HOLLER!!!!" Take that for what you will.

Carl in Texas   July 31st, 2008 7:41 pm ET

Let's face it, McCain is a racist. He's loosing and now he's sunk to the lowest depths. The Replublican Party should dump McCain now. He should never have gotten this far. That's it! I'm going to vote for Obama. I've had enough of John McLoser.

HTowell   July 31st, 2008 7:40 pm ET

Obama used the race card against the Clintons and he used it again 3 times yesterday comparing what he looks like to the portraits on our dollar bills. He is not as clever as in the ge as he was in the primaries.People have gotten wiser and and are more familiar with his little code words this time around.Too bad it is too late to change his nomination. As a Democrat I have moved on from the entire corrupt party.

The "Race Card"? That's pretty thin gruel coming from the GOP that found it's niche bashing immigrants and gays.

I guess McCain would be happier if Obama just sat back and ignored all those anonymous, false, and slanderous emails about Obama's religion, and background.

McCain will be four more years of Bush. His campaign is making that point loud and clear.

Obama Does It Better   July 31st, 2008 7:36 pm ET

I would like to ask Senator McCain – Why do you allow people like Pat Buchanna represent you and say things like " Senator Obama need to prove he is one of us" When supporters of yours make statements like this on Sunday news shows I can't help but think they are your mouth piece. Why does Obama have to prove he is of of you? What does Buchannan mean by that? What I find more surprising is that no one in the media challenged Mr. Buchannan including the Obama camp? These supporters are using "fear" tactics to appeal to certain type of voters (Obama knows this) and this what Obama is objecting to. Senator McCain can pretend not to be aware but I for I'm not buying this.

The RNC has been using people like Hannity, Limbaugh and even Lou Dobbs (self proclaim independent) to shove their agenda down our throats. When these folks make comments it goes unchallenged. I'm tuning out from CNN because I find some of their reporting "tabloid like" there is no substantive issues being discussed. Jack Cafferty has a point – we should not carry water for McCain camp, we need to talk about jobs, taxes, gas prices, energy, etc. I'm still waiting for McCain to outline his economic plan other then say he will not raise taxes (maybe he won't)?

Please post this because I'm really concerned the road this election coverage has taken in the past week.

Marc PDX   July 31st, 2008 7:35 pm ET

The race card has always been a big part of the Barack Star's playbook. He acts like he's taking the high road while tossing R-Bombs at his critics. If you are not voting for Barack then you are a racist. Sad!

Interracial Voter   July 31st, 2008 7:35 pm ET

Why have the pictures of Sen. Obama on Barakbook.com been altered to make Sen. Obama look angry and like a monkey? If this is not full blown racism... The only way that Sen. McCain knows about the "race card" is because he is the one who dealt it from the card deck.

David, Silver Spring, MD   July 31st, 2008 7:33 pm ET

The country is going down the tubes and we're borrowing money in order to throw it away in Iraq. In this environment, brought to you by eight years of George Bush, John McCain, and the Republican Party, all John McCain can offer is to whine that Obama is too popular. How sad.

John McCain is a crybaby.

Vera /AB. Canada   July 31st, 2008 7:32 pm ET

I think McSame is going senile or something is wrong with him. I cannot believe he is running for President ,he cannot give a speach without a telepromter or smaller speaches he has to read off a paper what a laugh and you people want someone like that. Send Obama to Canada we people will have him as he is a smart man.

Sally   July 31st, 2008 7:32 pm ET

Instead of wondering if anything the Republicana say about Senator Obama is racist, I ask how could it not be? White people are already fearful of blacks whether they admit it or not. (I'm white by the way and was married to a black man for many years while living in a confederate area of the U.S.) So, when his middle name is made to stand out, his love of country is questioned, and he shows up on the cover of a major magazine in a muslim outfit (even if it was meant to be funny), I would say that it feeds on the fear whites already have and pushes them toward McCain or not voting at all. If McCain wins the election it will be because of the above. Just because no one wants to admit that there is a "grey elephant" in the room, doesn't mean that it isn't there, it just means that everyone refuses to admit it or can't see because they don't have enough awareness of race relations in this country to be able to see it. I guess this won't get online!!!!!!!!!

irma   July 31st, 2008 7:32 pm ET

This is how BO operates. "Vote for me, I am the black guy and you owe it to us! If you don't, then you must be a racist, McCain is one, that's why he's running against me."

Anita from Arizona   July 31st, 2008 7:31 pm ET

"Obama told audiences that his opponent is trying to make voters “scared” of him because he doesn’t look like past presidents"

That above comment is not the "race-card" folks, sorry to tell you. It states the obvious. If you took that comment as playing the "race-card" them maybe you need to do some soul searching on yourself. Maybe race is an issue with you if that's the conclusion you came to from that statement.

Once again, we get off topic with the McCain campaign.

Funny how the Obamites squeal whenever their mistakes catch up with them. I dare anybody to look on youtube.com and enter "Obama race card". There are videos of Obama claiming that others will bring up his color when nobody has! And, the liar then turns around and denies doing it. What an arrogant jerk!

vince   July 31st, 2008 7:21 pm ET

Of course Obama played the race card. In the game of politics it's the only card he is holding. He can't really play " the things I've done" card or the "things I stand for card" ( seeing as how no one knows what he stands for). He is playing the hand he was dealt. A bunch of nothing and one smiling race card. It won the primary for him, why not whip it out again?

It is so so sad that a man that has earn a reputation for being fair, honest, and an honorable military person would allow it to be destroyed by a bunch of low lifes. It is also so so sad that this man has reach a level that he cannot comprehend when he is is making statements and saying things that is so so fair off the scale.

McCain knows like the nose on his face that Obama never made a statement implied a race statement. The statement was they are making me scary – apply to the rumor of Obama not being a christian, of him being (like Paris Hilton-rich little air-heads) , that Obama is an Each of these issues would make most folks not aware of the game too believe McCain statement.

Obama, please please change this game – let's leave McCain out their with his no brains and child like mentality – let's start please please turning the page, and start ADDRESSING THE ISSUES – ECONOMIC, EDUCATION, WARS, HIGH GAS PRICES.

May God keep McCain, a confused, dumb man out of the White House

Ellie, MD   July 31st, 2008 7:12 pm ET

McCain is proving to be an idiot just like his buddy George W. Bush currently in the Oval Office. How scary is that?

Okay we'll let's label McCain as an 'OLD GROUCHY MAN" as having repeated "SENIOR" moments in his speeches and comments.

I think this is another one of these "senior moments".

A recovering Republican   July 31st, 2008 7:10 pm ET

Numerous press has found that McCain has repeatedly made false accuastions against Obama. What does he do when he gets caught? He blames Obama and then shifts to a new negative tactic. He can't take on policy issues as the difference, he has to go ad homenen and even if he does address a policy issue, he can't do it without commenting on how Obama is wrong. Doesn't he trust the public to figure it out for himself?

10 years sober and discusted with myself over my past weakness.

This is outrageous   July 31st, 2008 7:09 pm ET

I am getting disgusted with all of this. It is a shame that people are dragging Obama in the dirt like this.

I am giving up on all of this politic stuff. Too much stress for me. This will be my last blog. My vote is what counts – not this blogging crap.

goodbye CNN.

Ryan - Tampa, Flordia   July 31st, 2008 7:09 pm ET

John McCain hasn't said a non political, decent, honorable thing since Tim Russert died.

Lets talk about risk, Obama at lease offers high return, McCain just offers the same steady declines. We've had two wars, two recessions, MULTIPLE crises, and have swiftly been loosing our standard of living, our liberties, and our peace of mind. Why isn't it time for a different course of action?

Jody Monroe   July 31st, 2008 7:07 pm ET

A person who points out the obvious is "playing the race card"? I think McCain needs to know what that really means - ala Jesse Jackson's blame / victim mentality!

Obama, on the other hand, advocates taking personal responsibility. He doesn't say that his race should be used as a weapon to gain favorability. Instead, he is honest and forthright about who he is and what he believes in.

Ron democrat turned independent   July 31st, 2008 7:05 pm ET

obama as pulled this kind of stunt since the primaries. he accuses the opposition of what he himself brings up. nobody as said anything about obama except how they differ on policies, the rest is made up by obama just like he did with hillary. he keeps talking about what they will probably say about him, not what they say about him. i think his problem is he knows his background will come up and he is trying to soften the damage by making the public think what they say won't be true. myself i still would like an explanation on why he doesn't buy his kids christmas and birthday gifts.

Marilyn   July 31st, 2008 7:05 pm ET

When Obama's people do everything they can to get black people registered so they can vote for him because he is black, then they definitely are playing the race card. And it should be called what it is - racism.

Rapha TEXAS   July 31st, 2008 7:04 pm ET

Remember Obama is half white and half black. He plays both sides of the aisle depending who his audience is. Ive never seen a bigger hypocrite in my life.

Do not be fooled by a man who bases his decisions on what is going to benefit him the most on that paticular day.

Claudia Kremer   July 31st, 2008 6:59 pm ET

Perhaps when Sen. Obama stated that he didn't look like the presidents who are currently on our currency he meant that he wasn't wearing a powdered wig or that he was thin or maybe that he had big ears! Why did McCain automatically think he meant race!!!

Hannah Stevens   July 31st, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Well, well, karl rove is back. you would think that McCain would not use his tactics since he was roved in 2000, when the bush campaign spread lies about McCain fathering a a black child in Alabama and the south. but McCain has not scruples, no values. He cheated on his first wife and divorced when she was ill and married Cindy who was younger, richer and better looking. What an opportunist.

Obama is a "race baiter". He used the same tactic in the primaries against Bill Clinton.

Obama may be inexperienced on the national scene, but he sure likes to show his slimy Chicago-style political savy whenever he can. I think he will do anything to get elected.

I hope he loses the election as I really think he would be better as a model in GQ Magazine. His poses all seem so picture perfect. Phoney, but picture perfect.

Patrick   July 31st, 2008 6:48 pm ET

Maybe McCain will have a heart attack. Call it cruel. My Nation has been under attack by these lunitics for 8 years. This is no place I want to leave my kids. DISGUSTING OLD MAN. SICK.

Nya   July 31st, 2008 6:48 pm ET

It's not playing the race card when people believe things about you that are not true and the lies are based about your race. When you tell someone to not look at you only for your skin color and to not fear you because of your name, that is not playing the race card. That asking people not to be simple and idiotic. Please people are you really going to fall for this?

I am sick and tired of people complaining about people of color "pulling the race card." Well, when people treat you due to your outside appearance, accent, or whatever and you get called on it. DON'T GET MAD. If you really believe "we're all Americans" then treat everyone accordingly.

California Voter   July 31st, 2008 6:47 pm ET

Give me a break. The Obama campaign from the very beginning has defty made race an issue. His campaign stump speech refers to how he became a "community organizer" in the South Side of Chicago rather than a big time money making lawyer. His surrogates blasted the Clintons for their "racist" remarks. Come on America! Obama has used his race to his advantage by accusing anyone who says anything remotely negative as being racist. This detracts from the real issues of his errors in judgment (Rezko, Wright for example) and his charactert (20 years a member of a black liberation church where the pastor preached words of hate and racism) and his super light resume.

Martin California   July 31st, 2008 6:47 pm ET

Obama and his supporters have been making everyone feel that if they don't vote for Obama, then they're racists. If anyone has taken the low road, it's been Obama all along. I am proud of McCain for standing up to this sort of stuff, when everyone else is too afraid of being called a racist for not voting for Obama. Thank you Senator McCain, this is exactly what we need in Washington.

Most people who claim to have seen Obama play a "race card," even on these comment boards, seem to go on and say ridiculous things like how he "whines" or demands preferential treatment because he's black.

But making other people's racism apparent isn't playing a "race card."

I think people would (and often do) accuse ANY black politician of playing a "race card." Obama could literally be the savior of the world and it wouldn't matter to those saying he was "arrogant" (read "uppity") or an "affirmative action candidate."

I am amazed that people in America don't realize that this race is a factor in the election. If there were two white men, this would not be an issue. Face it, Barack Obama is getting 98% of the black vote because traditionally African Americans vote party lines usually voting for a Democrate.

Let's face it, there are some people in America that are racist or an undercover racist. Some individuals are not telling the truth. Be real.

This is the first time America is faced with the first African American candidate. Most Americans cannot relate to Obama, he has a rare ethnic background.

Race is an issue.

We need to get real on this issue.

Obama will play every trick in the book = same old politics. All McCain's camp did was call him out on this, as they have been doing all along.

I love the excuse given by Obama's campaign -
“What Barack Obama was talking about was that he didn’t get here after spending decades in Washington,” Gibbs said. “There is nothing more to this than the fact that he was describing that he was new to the political scene."

"New to the political scene"? Finally some self-truth about Obama's lack of experience.

Well, I am reminded that the current President looks somewhat like those past Presidents. However, I am also reminded of how dissappointed I have been in the current President's leadership. Maybe that is why a completely different way of doing things is so appealing. I just wish that Obama would let us know with whom he will surround himself if he achieves the office of President. I would still feel better if I knew that Hillary Clinton was Obama's VP choice.

Obama can't say it – but McCain is doing extactly what the HC campaign did when she was loosing – GO NEGATIVE – hopefully it won't work, and people are more aware, more educated enough to see through this – it's too important to fall for the old style politics, too much is at stake for 4 more years of the USA being run by corporatations, special interest groups – the money that has been made by large corporations, investment banks, oil is a disgrace – when the rest of us are struggling these people are rolling in cash!
How any normal person with a brain can consider voting for McCain is beyond me – look at the last 8 years how could Obama possilby do any worse!!!??? Also it does matter what the rest of world thinks of the US – it's blind ignorance and the hight of arrogance not to this so!

bulldog   July 31st, 2008 6:28 pm ET

This is simply an underhanded way of bring race into the campaign by McCain himself. He knows there are still tons of racists in this country so by throwing the "race card" allegation out there he is targeting these exact people. It doesn't matter if it's true or not, the mere fact that it might be will give these racist Americans fuel for their hatred.

Daley Dunham   July 31st, 2008 6:27 pm ET

A rather ingenious Rove move, actually. It gets people to focus on the superficial, meaningless ways in which Obama is different from many of us instead of the substantive, meaningful way in which he is unified with all of us (interest in fixing the economy, solving the energy crisis, etc.).

Basically, it's a way of obliquely 'playing the race card' by directly accusing your opponent of 'playing the race card'. Brilliant – but GOP hypocrisy FIRMLY on the low road, to be sure.

Dudervision   July 31st, 2008 6:26 pm ET

To all the PUMA's out there. I won't even begin to discuss the very fact that McCain pretty much stands against EVERYTHING that Hillary stood for and that your vote for him is as much a vote AGAINST HER as it is against Obama and the DNC.

But, this delusion that a vote against Obama this fall will make HIllary a sure thing in 2012 doesn't take into account that there are a lot more dedicated Democrats who will hold Hillary libel for his losing the election. Obama loses, and Hillary's political career, at least as a Democrat, will be put to an end by those looking for somebody to blame.

OK...OK...I know you may say they would do this just to be bitter...but whose bitter now???? PLEASE...there is too much at stake this fall. If you are a TRUE Democrat...no...ANYBODY who wants the nightmare of the last 8 years to end...you MUST vote for Obama. Even if you don't vote for McCain, a vote for Nader, Barr, a write in for Hillary, or no vote will do the same damage.

Ask yourself...do you really care about America and it's future???

Senator John McCain is a fine one to talk – HA. He has been attacking Senator Obama even before anyone knew that he would be the Democratic nominee. Those attacks have intensified of late and it looks like real desperation on Senator McCain's part. As far as race goes it could be said that he played the race card with his commerical using Hilton & Spears. Senator McCain has to recognize the reality of it – Senator Obama is running an impeccable campagin in comparison to his.

Fair, McCain? Please try to explain that to Paris Hilton's parents, who donated to your campaign.

McCain conveniently forgets that if Obama is playing the race card, it is because his campaign dealt it to him. When McCain was nominated by the Republicans, I was pleased, and I thought we'd get an honest debate. However, that has proven not to be the case with the McCain campaign sinking to a new low each week.

Oh My God. I hate it when people say this. "The race card" - 1) it's dealt, not played (think about it); 2) Isn't McCain the one bringing up race? When did Obama say the McCain camp was being racist?

Answer: He didn't. He said they were trying to scare people because he is different than what we've had before, which is true. They did the same thing with JFK, RFK, tried it on Hillary. Looks like McCain is the one playing the race card to me. This accusation is scurrilous and pitiful. To borrow a phrase from Madame Clinton "Shame on you", McCain!

McCain is getting to be a joke.

Obama's tax plan LOWERS taxes on everyone here than McCain's plan does. Obama's health plans cover MORE people than McCain's non-plan. Obama's plans lead to a LOWER deficit than McCain's plan. Those are FACTS – google it.

Obama is for lower taxes and a lower deficit. That's conservative ideals I can believe in. McCain provides fewer tax breaks to those making less than $230,000 a year and gives us a bigger deficit to boot. The republicans are lying to you about their economic plans. Don't be fooled.

Obama doesn't have to bring up race because a lot of McCain supporters have done so already. I have seen so many blogs and interviews of McCain supporters that say they would never vote for a black man for President. It's a shame that Obama's strong policies and issues, Harvard education and high integrity of a man still isn't good enough for some people.

Whatever!!! It's good enough for me and is good enough to lead this country!!!!

Obama has used even stronger language. According to a June 20 Reuters wire service story, Obama said at a Florida fundraiser,"they're going to try to make you afraid of me," Obama said. "He's young and inexperienced and he's got a funny name. And did I mention he's black?"

Brittnay   July 31st, 2008 6:05 pm ET

While, I agree that maybe Obama's statements were racially charged, I do believe that he has a good point. A lot of the republicans that I work with have been spouting comments, such as, "Obama is a muslim" and "Obama=Osama". It is comments such as these that fuel the fire and force him to publicly state that he is just another American even if he has a funny name and doesn't look like the other candidates. The Republican party has been undermining themselves and their goals by pointing out these differences because it makes them look petty and childish. And we should hold the people that want us to elect them to higher standards. I would also like to point out that JFK went through the same difficulties that Obama is especially with the older crowd. He was younger, good looking, and different. Both Obama and JFK may have star-like quality but it doesn't and didn't negate their ability to lead. Wouldn't it be nice if we had a president that could speak English properly, didn't make ashamed that we were from Texas or the United States, perhaps one that gets us away from the "good ol' boys" who play favorites? I'd also like a president who didn't lie to me and gave me hope, but that may be too much to ask for. God, forbid we actually think the person we are voting for is a decent fellow and likable enough.

Does anyone have a hanky??? Let me get this straight...McCain can put out an ad likening Obama to notorious celebrities but Obama is not allowed to reference a legitimate argument Republicans are making concerning his ethnicity?? I bet McCain didn't play in the sandbox well with others. What a cry-baby!!!

Is it not enough that there are a vast array of policy differences among the two candidates that we really need to see commercials about Obama's celebrity status??? Who cares??? My guess is that McCain is jealous...and to say that Obama's reference to being black is devisive but that commercial isn't is absurd!!!

God help us if McCain is our next president...

Sad to see Mccain like this. He's let Rove dictate what to do. Each day Mccain stoops lower than the day before. It's really unfortunate because he is only hurting himself and his chances. At times, it seems as though he really doesn't care (oblivious) about what he does or says. Probably because others are running his campaign and he's only notified later about what transpired. I don't know what's going on there (at Mccain campaign) but it went from being funny to just being pathetic and sad.

After many gaffes, he now lets his people say things for him, he is planning to limit media access and let the superlatives do the talking. From what I gather, Mccain believes that Bush won by being mean and negative. He thinks that is how to win, he's letting other people run the show the way they see fit. They see Americans are gullible fools.

Nonetheless, we should cut Mccain some slack, the man is OVER 70 and it's ok to make gaffes and mistake (more often) at that age. For a few months, Mccain has said little to nothing about issues. He is seemingly obsessed with Obama and talks in a way that he is really angry at him, can't bear the notion of someone challanging him. Temper? Mccain is the oldest person to ever run for President. He runs a lame campaign and any person with good head on their shoulders, logical people (not the ones using Rush's talking points) can see that he is simply too old and can't fix the monumental problems facing America.

Obama knows that there are people who simply will not vote for him, they're not concerned with the issues facing America today, only to militantly oppose Obama and make no secret of their obsession with him, as well. This election, thanks to Mccain, Rove, has taken the shape of the '04 election.

If not for the rank of his father he would be just another POW, that's the only reason he was offered an early release. Get over it McBush today's first time voters, don't care when they see the struggles of their families and they certainly don't want to look forward to 100 years of war. Act like a grow-up!

Or FORGETTING how he voted against insurance companies covering birth control like Viagra, forgetting that he opposed the new GI bill and 2 other pieces of troop-friendly legislation, forgetting that the so-called "Anbar Awakening" happened 5 month prior to his precious surge, or forgetting that he predicted the Iraq war would be a short affair that would only cost us a few billion dollars AND we'd be greeted as liberators, to boot.

I'm so tired of race card politics. If anyone needs to play the race card it's Caucasians being discriminated against because they are what they are. It's like apo;ogizing for being alive and breathing on the planet.

William in Illinois   July 31st, 2008 5:51 pm ET

Talking about the race card is a great tactic when your campaign is starting to see the horizon. [Nov. 08] Using the patrotic card is also not a bad idea. The media blamed Hillary for whining about the the Obama campaign this spring. I guess the media will not do the same for the Mcsame 08 campaign. Ratings need rule the media.

Lynn, Missouri   July 31st, 2008 5:50 pm ET

What makes us think that his saying he doesn't look like any of the other pres. is the race card? It could have been the age card. Besides, it's the truth. He doesn't look like the others. McCain looks like an Eisenhour dime to me, but I'm going blind. McCain is pushing the envelope and drawing at strings. I guess McCain's going to dissect every sentence Obama says. What a waste of time and money. I hope Obama rises above it.

Biffington, Biff   July 31st, 2008 5:50 pm ET

Can SOMEBODY tell me how it benefits OBAMA to play RACE????

HALF OF THE COUNTRY WON'T VOTE FOR HIM 'BECAUSE' OF IT !

DUH !

Antoine in Alberta   July 31st, 2008 5:50 pm ET

Obama didn't say "HIS OPPONENT". He said "THE REPUBLICANS." There is a difference here, and I hope people actually pay attention. McCain hasn't played the race-fear card YET, but the Republicans have, and that's what Obama was hinting at.
BUT having said that, Obama has to be careful not to talk about the "cards" until he gets provoked. 'Cause they will go ahead and play the race card, while he cries wolf.
CNN, I'm a big fan of yours, but please quote the candidates word for word.

Jenna   July 31st, 2008 5:49 pm ET

I am really glad someone had the guts to finally call Senator Obama on playing the race card it is inappropriate for Obama to state that the GOP is trying to scare people becuase he does not look like the president on the dollar bill. If the GOP does not meet this head on, the Obama campaign will be getting away with giving the impression that they are racist. This is precisly Obama's plan and this Plan is out of line and definately the Obama Low Road of politics...

McCain says 'race card' charges are fair......

well, of course HE does.....

DOES MCCAIN SPEAK FOR THE MCCAIN CAMPAIGN TODAY?

KE   July 31st, 2008 5:48 pm ET

When Obama played the race card in his own party he knew it will put the Clintons on offence. The McCain campaign needs to expose this race card playing right away, and every single time they play it.

"I'm sorry to say that it is. It's legitimate," McCain told CNN's John King. "And there's no place in this campaign for that. There's no place for it and we shouldn't be doing it."

"Barack Obama has played the race card, and he played it from the bottom of the deck. It's divisive, negative, shameful and wrong," Davis said in a statement sent to reporters.

Repeat, repeat, repeat.

david   July 31st, 2008 5:47 pm ET

Old Man McCain is doing well in the polls, but is still running scared of Obama. Very strange.

OBAMA OBAMA   July 31st, 2008 5:47 pm ET

The only thing they want is SURGE SURGE SURGE , Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran /MORE WAR WAR WAR .

Jeff, South Bend, IN   July 31st, 2008 5:47 pm ET

You McCain defenders on here are idiots. You have no facts, you just spout opinions and lies.

1) I don't see Obama whining. McCain and camp ARE running ads that portray Obama as non-white and scary. Just because he has the courage to ask people to look beyond that BS doesn't make him a whiner. It makes him more of a man than McCain.

2) I don't see Obama making America weak. Just because world leaders embraced Obama more than McCain doesn't make him weak, in fact it makes Obama more likely to get things done in the world to our advantage. We (Americans) can't step foot in the middle east without a helicopter convey under Bush/McCain leadership.

3) Obama supports the troops and the military much more than McCain. McCain lies and says veterans groups all prefer him more than Obama, when in reality if you read the voting record McCain is absentee at best. Obama has a much better record of voting for veteran's right that McCain. He's just hoping voters are too stupid to notice the difference.

4) I don't see him playing the victim card. Both Clintons, Ferraro, McCain and other Republicans have made racist statements. Obama didn't say the words, and he didn't think the thoughts. Obama asks people to get beyond this and solve problems. If McCain lovers want Obama to stop asking people to look past race and gaining sympathy, then stop making racist statements trying to hurt him based on skin color. Easy.

5) Obama is a snake? Slithers away? Maybe. He's a politician, moron, and if you think he's doing it anywhere near as much as McCain and Clinton did, you need to adjust your medication, because you can't see clearly or accept facts.

And clearly since the Internet forum here gives you complete anonymity, you feel justified in coming on here and spewing hatred and ignorance and complete BS. God bless CNN. Let's hope Darwin does his thing long before you get near a voting lever.

Belle   July 31st, 2008 5:47 pm ET

WHO CARES WHAT COLOR YOU ARE-You are an AMERICAN MAN RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, aren't you? QUIT the broad strokes, quit the smoke and mirrors and TALK DETAILS ABOUT YOUR PLANS!

Racism ISN'T ONLY against African Americans....what about the Illegal Immigrant that got BEATEN TO DEATH in PA Senator Obama?

INSTEAD of pointing out the color of your skin, what do YOU plan to do, as President, to get RID of the racism in our country?

Spider   July 31st, 2008 5:45 pm ET

Come on people.
Who has brought up race in this campaign ever since the primary's started? Barack Obama.

Clinton – "His campaign is a fairy tale."
Obama – "What's that supposed to mean? I'm black?"

Voter – "I'm just not sure he has enough experience."
Obama – "It's because I'm black, isn't it?"

McCain – "His policies and his views are not what this country needs."
Obama – "If you don't vote for me, you are racist."

I don't remember this country ever electing a pair of twins to the Presidency, so what else does "I don't look like the other Presidents"
refer to? His height?

Joe   July 31st, 2008 5:45 pm ET

McCain is such a fool. I'm sick of it. All I want is for this election to be over and for Obama to be President. McCain is so childish and it sickens me because this just reminds me of a Bush campaign. Great...

Mcain=bush if not tell me something he will do different.

mccain must go   July 31st, 2008 5:42 pm ET

McCain's accusation is far more STUPID than it is offensive. What is he complaining about exactly?? Why should the voters be offended because of what Obama said?

And most importantly, WHY SHOULD ANYBODY VOTE FOR MCCAIN???

Give it up Obama!

You have played the race card from square one. Shame on you!

Hillary had you pegged Barack! And, you will lose! :)

Obama, you are an arrogant phony with nothing to offer but narcissism and lust for power! :(

Eric, you are so correct. Obama is making America look weak by showing how stupid some of its residents are. Can anybody tell me anything that McNuts plans on doing when he is president other than stay in Iraq and drill for oil in America? Anybody?????

Jan from Boca Raton, FL   July 31st, 2008 5:41 pm ET

So, anybody like me claiming to be from a battleground state and then claiming to be a Hillary supporter that hates Obama is a fake post by a Republican.

I am not actually named Jan, and I am not from Boca.

I guess the Republicans have been lowered to the point that they have to trick voters into not voting for Obama.

Hillary supporters: We are all Democrats. Vote your interest. Vote your values. Vote your issues. Vote Obama!

Faye in Tucson   July 31st, 2008 5:39 pm ET

Obama, his supporters, and his campaign play the race card every time someone says something negative about him. He played the race card with Hillary and Bill Clinton when, in fact, their comments were historically correct (Jessie Jackson did win South Carolina but lost the election for President; President Johnson played an important part in the civil rights movement and so did Martin Luther King., and now with John McCain. Those are facts and yet, Obama bamboozled both Hillary and Bill Clinton into making public apologies for their comments.

Senator Obama proclaims to be the great unifier (I wonder if anyone in the media has the nerve to ask him just what has he ever unified?) and how can that be when he tells a crowd of supporters "that McCain and others make fun of anyone who looks different from the faces on our dollar bills or has a funny name". That is a bald-face lie and it is a royal flush in using the race card.

This self-proclaimed redeemer, who with a snap of his fingers, is going to right all the wrong of the USA and then the world is a whiner who should go back to the Senate floor and serve out his term so that it equals more than 143 days of actual duty.

Wen   July 31st, 2008 5:38 pm ET

I'm going to start calling McCain Two-Face after the Batman villain. This negativity is disgusting, as well as the candidate's constant declarations that he's above it all as he turns around and spits venom out of the side of his mouth.

KJ, CA   July 31st, 2008 5:38 pm ET

I am not a McCain fan but when it looked like he was going to get the nomination I thought great because he will talk about the issues and stay above the fray. Well, I was wrong – McCain is really getting down in the gutter and it is very disappointing. I am an Obama supporter but I at least want to be able to respect the other candidate...

Aaron Hussein   July 31st, 2008 5:38 pm ET

Doesn't it sound like McCain's campaign is being written by kids? I mean their comments are childish and all they do is pick apart what Obama says. Pretty soon he'll just start playing the repeating game. Oh wait he already has with Afhanistan and the time "horizon" in Iraq.

AJP Richardson, TX   July 31st, 2008 5:37 pm ET

He is a discrace to America.

I just read some frightening comments on the blog about the Ad.

Does the Republican who wrote to McCain talking about how impressive it is that the two blonde bimbettes pictured in the ad have done so well increasing their income over the last few years (oh, and I'd be SO PROUD of how they conduct themselves! PUH-LEEZ!) that he thinks Obama will bring more money to the US in tourism because of his "celebrity"???? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? When is the last time you picked YOUR vacation spot because of the President of that country????

I'm disgusted with this whole election and the name calling towards McCain. Have a little respect for the man, regardless of if you support him or not. Stop acting like the children you obviously are.

Dj   July 31st, 2008 5:37 pm ET

Whenever someone falsely accuses another for doing 'something' it is usually a reaction to a guilty conscience.

Sen. Obama said that they are trying to make them "scared" of him... and they are...

The McCain campaign obviously feels guilty and are offended because they KNOW that they ARE trying to use Obama race to scare voters.

jp/michigan   July 31st, 2008 5:37 pm ET

Back in June of 2008, Obama told the public ," They're going to try to make you afraid of me." He's at it again, whine, whine, and more whine. Historian Sean Wilentz dubbed this tactic, "race-baiter card". Smear your opponents as racists, and if there's no evidence for the claim, accuse then of using"coded language". There is no authoritative racial code-book, so the charge is easy to lodge.

Asian4Hillary   July 31st, 2008 5:36 pm ET

Obama played the race card starting from South Carolina all the way now to McCain. During NEVADA DEBATE, Tim Russert showed Obama MEMO from his OWN CAMPAIGN to use RACE CARD AGAINST HILLARY, Obama acknowledged it.

WHO IS GOING TO DENY THAT?!?!?!

Jenna   July 31st, 2008 5:36 pm ET

what's new, he's played the race card on many occasions, it shows weakness on his behalf and does nothing to help race relations.

Debi   July 31st, 2008 5:36 pm ET

When all else fails, you can always resort to "he's using the race card". That is a call many people tend to make when it's to their advantage these days. No, it's you McCain, who's playing the race card" by bringing it up in the first place. Obama does not bring race up until he's backed in a corner to do so. Move on to your next attack on Obama, which is your expertise. Hopefully, at some point, he will talk about what I and the American people want to hear, the issues.

Paris   July 31st, 2008 5:36 pm ET

Obama uses race when he needs it and he uses it to manipulate peoples emotion when likes to.

He did the same thing on the primaries and the media was feeding the fuel as well.

This is the lowest form of strategy.

Obama you should be ashamed that you are useing Race for your personal advantage.

Just like he used 200,000 people for his campaign.

Alexia Peachtree   July 31st, 2008 5:36 pm ET

I'm scared of Obama because his black! I'm scared of Whoopi Goldberg's gum's because there black! I'm scared of the back of Forest Whitaker's neck because its black!! I'm scared of the black key's on a Piano because it's black. I'm scared of Wesley Snipes because he's black! Your right Obama! I'm scared and this is the only reason that I am not voting for you! :*-)

Jeff, South Bend, IN   July 31st, 2008 5:35 pm ET

Obama is no peach, but McCain and team are total scumbags. A complete lack of vision, ideas, and real solutions – they turn towards playing divisive advertisements, and then turn around claiming the other side is "playing the race card". Gaffe after gaffe after gaffe, followed by lie after lie after lie.

I am inclined to vote Obama just to get someone solely to get a leader who is less bitter, angry, divisive than McCain – and less likely to completely abandon their ethics and morals in pursuit of power, and less likely to outright demean their opponent and insult the intelligence of voters.

Not McCain '08

Walter   July 31st, 2008 5:35 pm ET

If the racist shoe (or, in your case, jackboot) fits, then wear it!

McCain probably has friends who are black. But that counts for nothing. If you are willing to use race as a divisive political ploy in order to win a campaign – then you are a racist.

McCain is the worst kind of racist, in fact. One who doesn't want to come right out and state his case. At least David Duke had the courage of his disgusting convictions.

RFO   July 31st, 2008 5:35 pm ET

We know what you are doing, we know what you mean when you say it!

Maybe in a hundred years or more we will mature as a nation. It is unfortunate that every thing from whining about patriotism to under handed links with blond celebrities in ads with "Foreign Oil" next to Baracks picture on television are all full of subliminal messages and not by accident!

These messages are meant to district the easily distracted! And I admit that it might work. It is unfortunate but sobering to know what America is really about!

We [America] talk a good game but we are in no way the shinning moral beacon of the world. If you want to take Barack on then do it by stressing the issues that effect the average American not by showing "mickey mouse" adds aimed at an 8th grade mentality audience.

I am a real Patriot and I know bull crap when smell it! At least David Duke is honest about what he thinks.

Monica, Texas   July 31st, 2008 5:35 pm ET

You could tell by the interview that McCain is very uncomfortable with this being the topic...However he is doing under the advise of his campaign and they are telling him it is needed in order to win, sad sad sad this not the same John McCain.

fred   July 31st, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Oh my gosh. People, who cares if Obama is black, or a mix, or whatever you want to call him. The racist people are those who think that everyone who doesn't support Obama doesn't support him because of his color. Well, you guys are all wrong. Who cares what his color is, and who cares what he says in his speeches. His ideas are horrible. All you people who are saying "Yes We Can" probably don't even know what you're saying "Yes We Can" to. Yes We Can_____ What???? If it's all about Obama becoming president, of course he can, because people like you guys don't look at his record and just listen to his mouth. If it's Yes We Can have change, of course we can. Congress changes things every day. But will we have GOOD CHANGE with Obama??????? NOPE

Vic   July 31st, 2008 5:34 pm ET

Obama and his henchmen did it to Bill Clinton (with an acquiescing, oh-so-insightful media) so why wouldn't they try it on McCain

Miguel Rivera   July 31st, 2008 5:34 pm ET

John McCain's campaign is becoming George W. Bush 2004 campaign right before my very eyes. John McCain is crying wolf on the "race card" issue and the "elitist" label.

Every campaign, the Republicans say about Al Gore and John Kerry, "he is out of touch with the american people", "he's too risky," "he will raise your taxes," "he supports big government."
Looks like now let's try the same thing on Obama and hope it works.

John McCain has been using the "age card" and no one is complaining?

Nate   July 31st, 2008 5:33 pm ET

deepintheheart- That was a fantastic way of putting McCain's claim on the race card in to perspective. You couldn't have explained it better.

Q: So given the reality that it's obsurd to say Obama is playing the race card what are McCain's motives?? A: Every person who has a negative view of Obama or has racial stereotypes or bias will be sympathetic to McCain's complaint. It's another way of bringing race into the election and using it against Obama.

Belle   July 31st, 2008 5:33 pm ET

This is too much like an Instant replay of the Primary. Unfortunately, Senator Obama doesn't know some of us are over the shock, and actually see what he is doing. Although it worked against Clinton, I am not so sure the same nasty politics will work against McCain.

However, CNN will twist any story to make it appear as though Obama is blessed.

joe kiloz   July 31st, 2008 5:32 pm ET

RITH ON Senator McCain ! I'm with you on this one. This is the same nonsense that Mr. Obama has learned from Johnny Cochran. Not only should you say that it is right on, point out the disservice it percolates to those who are trying to break into the mainstream. We don't need any more of Obama's yelling "fire" in a crowded theather.

Whether you think that Mccain's ad was low road or not, it didn't make any reference to howw Obama looked. Obama's campaign comment about not looking like the presidents on dollar bills was playing the race card. Obama did the same crap during the Democratic primarys.

Debby   July 31st, 2008 5:29 pm ET

Sandra: McCain has never brought race into the equation so how is his campaign doing so. Obama in Germany the first things out of his mouth were I look different from any other candidate standing here in the past. What is that all about then certainly not his big ears!!!!!!! McCain is right Obama uses race when he is a little down and out, he did it with Clinton and now since he isn't soaring in the polls he is using it now. I said in another thread if he has any merits keep preaching those not his skin color.

Michele, Oregon   July 31st, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Just watch McCain when he thinks he’s got a good line in a town hall speech about Obama and you can literally see him glint, raise his eyebrows, give a little foot lift etc. as he is very proud of himself. Today when he was interviewed by John King you could tell he was going along with the campaign about Obama playing the race card BECAUSE HE THINKS IT MIGHT WORK, but not that he really believes it himself. His body language is very telling.

I am white, but I do believe that the McCain camp has been playing a subtle race card when they act like Obama has the audacity to go act presidential overseas (uppity/arrogant for a ....), when they try to make him not like "us", etc. I do think that Obama has to be careful when speaking about race though as it will be used against him when he does and turned around at every turn as though he is the one playing the race card, such as in the primaries.

Mikey   July 31st, 2008 5:28 pm ET

ANYTHING to avoid discussing the issues. The McCain camp has spent most of it's energy attacking Obama and mostly personally and not on the issues. The main thrust of those attacks is to paint Obama as someone we should not be comfortable with – elitist, reckless, naive, etc.

Other than the surge, which as at least temporarily reduced the level of violence in Iraq and yet remains to be seen if it actually leads to political success there, McCain seems to have little else to say about the issues facing the American people.

Obama's idea to negotiate with Iran and Korea is criticized, then adopted.
Obama's idea to focus more on Afghanistan is ignored, then adopted.
Obama's idea for a 16 month timetable is simultaneously criticized as naive and seriously discussed by Maliki, McCain, and Bush.

Anything to avoid talking about the economy, where McCain is basically clueless and his primary economic advisor thinks Americans are whiners who are only suffering from a 'psychological' downturn.

The McCain camp would clearly rather have this election be about personality and that McCain is a guy you can be more comfortable with because he is more like you, than about judgment, capabilities, and the issues. Does 'more comfortable' include looking like the guys on our currency? Certainly his right-wing media cheerleaders have wandered over that line. The McCain camp itself has at least been very close.

Don of Fairfax   July 31st, 2008 5:27 pm ET

Typical Democratic whining . . . look at the posters on this site . . . you address a true American hero as McShame, McBush, McThisandThat . . . you reference his age, his health and his wife's wealth . . . now you cry because your candidate played the race card and got called on the carpet for it. You are the ones that can't have it both ways . . . you are the ones that are resorting to desperate mean-spirited language. If you truly want to know why I won't vote for Obama, it's because he is all fluff and no substance. Do yourself a favor and list both candidates Senatorial accomplishments side-by-side . . . guess who has the short list or should I say no list?

Obama is best described as a "flash in the pan".

Vote McCain in 2008

gary cimino   July 31st, 2008 5:27 pm ET

When Americans look at the situation they are in after 7 years of Republican rule, it is amazing that the polls are so close. It should be a Blowout! I don't know how Mcbush can look people in the face and act like they had nothing to do with the wars, economy, borders, immigration and housing mess. If ever a party was running on empty,it would be them. From my side of the border, it looks like Americans vote for the party they belong to regardless of the present day situation. So, there is a philosophical divide between liberals and conservatives that shows up at the polls. John Kerry made Bush look like a bumbling idiot in the first debate and Bush still got elected using the fearmonger card. McBush will do the same to Obama.

Whats left in your wallet?   July 31st, 2008 5:26 pm ET

What a sad little man.

Steve   July 31st, 2008 5:26 pm ET

McCain, your politics of fearmongering is working. With each new attempt to discredit Obama instead of talking about real issues, I become more and more fearful. Of YOU! Your constant whining and finger-pointing reminds me more and more of my four-year-old grandson.

All I'm asking you to do, is to tell me what YOU and YOUR administration are going to do for America. What are YOU going to do to fix the economy that Bush took from a 128 billion dollar surplus to an almost 500 billion dollar deficit in 8 short years. What are YOU going to do to fix healthcare? What are YOU going to do to resolve Mideastern problems (without bombing the hell out of them..which Bush has found out doesn't work). What are YOU going to do to repair American's incredibly crappy reputation, world wide? I want you to talk about your programs and plans. I want you to go one single day without uttering Obama's name in a negative way one single time.

You compare Obama's popularity to Hollywood starlets? I compare your popularity to the crotchety old man that lives down the street from me, and yells at kids to get off his lawn.

Presidents don't whine. Presidents don't continually blame others for their own impotence as a leader. Presidents fix things (usually, except for the last 8 years). If you can't do even a few of the things I ask, get lost.

Trill   July 31st, 2008 5:26 pm ET

Actually, McCain played the "Race Card" . Anyways, where did this "race card" phrase come from? It sounds like a feeble attempt to downplay any talk of racism as if it doesn't exist. Well racism exists and the majority race has been priveledged in this country since it's founding. Even if Obama said something about race, good for him. he is breaking down barriers for all minorities whether it is race, religion or gender. But you weak and closed minded peopel cover your ears and yell they are playing the race card if someone mentions race.

Why is he in the politics? Does he think that "papa" Dean and momma Dona Brazile with cousins Mattheus and Olberman and Borger and other bias journalists are going to keep his empty words in the media and activly campaign for him.

But the Right IS trying to make everyone scared to elect the black guy...... why else the insistance on not letting go of Rev. Wright? Why else the pushing the anti-affirmative-action referendum in Arizona? Many other issues.... They are the ones trying to drive a wedge between whites and blacks.

Granted, it isn't central among their outrageous tactics, but it is there.

McCain is the biggest hypocrite there is.

Javi   July 31st, 2008 5:24 pm ET

If someone decided to vote for McCain instead of Obama solely because of skin color, name, or any of the ridiculous myths floating around, would McCain or the RNC reject that person's vote? Really, one shouldn't stir up fears and then lambast another for coolly addressing them (and then moving on rather than dwelling).

Oh, and I must thank the McCain campaign for bringing up Paris Hilton. Just when she was out if sight and off the minds of so many of us, you pollute our minds and give lazy news directors a reason to inundate the airwaves with Ms. Hilton. This is almost sure to be followed by some lazy exec in Hollywood who will now decide to attach a project to the celebutante whose 15 minutes seemed to be thankfully in the past.

Chuck   July 31st, 2008 5:24 pm ET

Ok, Obama is playing the race card because there is one African American out of all eligible African Amercian voters who has yet to make up his mind if he is going to vote for Obama or not. Gee, that makes sense.

Jamal   July 31st, 2008 5:23 pm ET

American love to be lied to,race is the biggest factory in this race,Thing is know one will admit it,Obama's skill in politics has nothing to do with it.Most White americans, plain and simple just don't want to see a black president. This why hillary supporters switched over to Mc Cain..
"Its very obvious".People can make all the excuses they want,Black Americans/and Black People all over the world know this.

REG in AZ   July 31st, 2008 5:23 pm ET

One more point. I noted where, after McCain flip-flopped on his off shore drilling stand, the oil companies donated $1+ million to his campaign. That reenforces a couple of things: where his loyalty will be and who he will be indebted to (more Special Interests focus); and how the money will be there for more public opinion manipulation (2000 & 2004 style). I sincerely hope the voters are up to being objective and see through this stuff this time around.

Notice how the McCain campaign doesn't even cite examples. What we're seeing here is their campaign falling apart before our very eyes. Negative ads with false claims, now race, soon it'll be back to the flag pin and his middle name. Desperation at its finest.

Ted:Canada   July 31st, 2008 5:21 pm ET

Read this – this is funny!

“Race Card” Wow!!
Have you noticed that all on all Political Ticker pictures, McCain and the Republicans look “mad” check out today’s string. Also when CNN interviews the Democrats and the Republican surrogates on TV, the Republicans all look the same – they all look and sound “mad”!

Now I now you don’t want to hear from foreigners even if I am and older white Canadian

But it looks like the Repub’s are always mad?

They are mad at Obama for being white and black
They are mad at women for asking questions about birth control bills
They are mad at Europeans/World for liking Obama
They are mad at celebrities – so much for Shwarts
They are mad at Americans who simply want a change from the last eight years
They are mad at Hillary and the Bill because they are a threat to the Republicans.
They are mad at Americans who “whine” because they lost their houses and or jobs.
They even pretend to be mad at George Bush, their mentor and leader for the last eight years.

Is possible that they are just “MAD”

And now they are calling Obama a racist? Now that is really “mad” !!!!

Come on Repubs next time you are being interviewed by CNN – put a smile on your face – you guys are good at pretending!!

Watch out CNN! – if they get mad they are going to blame you for not having enough "smiling pictures" of the Repubs.

Robert Wooller, West Yorkshire England   July 31st, 2008 5:21 pm ET

After this and also comparing Obama to celebrities, it just goes to show that McCain is out of any real, constructive ideas that will get the US out of the hole it is in i.e. with the economy. People have had enough of Bush, McCain politics and this will be proven when they vote for Obama later this year.

Linda31   July 31st, 2008 5:21 pm ET

Willy – If you think the series Black in America was helpful towards Obama, you must be blind or deaf. The McCain camp was looking for an opportunity to eject the "race card" card so that they can use race more so later in the election process. This is just a cherry on top a horrible McCain campaign.

I amazed to hear from my die hard Republican friends turning away from their party in disgust. Keep it up McCain.

Oops   July 31st, 2008 5:21 pm ET

THEN MCCAIN PLAYED THE AGE CARD ON SNL. OBAMA WAS MAKING FUN OF HIMSELF.

WHY SO SERIOUS MCCAIN?

andyd   July 31st, 2008 5:20 pm ET

McCain consciously Race-Baited Obama last week, with his sudden and out-of-context statement about affirmative action. Rove's second in command, who runs McCain's campaign, created a situation where race is the issue and Obama cannot say anything at all without the potential for John McCain to claim the Black Liberal is more racist than the White Republican.

The media, of course, is to busy with gossip fluff to dig an inch of top-soil dow into the stpry of the day.

It is a sad indication of how devious the Republicans will be and how bogged down the Obama camp is about responding.

McCain is doing to Obama what Obama did to Clinton last year: He is winning the critical margins of the electorate while Obama is doing nothing of tactical value for himself. Rove's machine owns the witless news cycle, Obama's campaign is to crowded with love and joy and hopefulness to take initiative where it matters.

The low opinion of the voters with America's "direction" should be a no-brainer for any Democrat to use almost every day against the GOP, but Obama has become too afraid of making a mistake to do anything right.

By next month Obama will be the long shot and Rove's tacticians will have stolen one of the most disappointing election in either party's history. Without even using a staged terrorist threat.

Emily   July 31st, 2008 5:20 pm ET

The bigger picture is this:

If Barack is not one of us, he must be one of "them". When McCain says "them" it could be anything–foreigner, black, Muslim....you fill in the dots.

We're not buying the slick, under-handed mud-slinging of the past. Americans are moving on to bigger and better things, like a president who will make us proud.

I can see McCain in his rocking chair now saying "What happened?" Yes, he'll be watching Barack on TV being the wonderful president that we know he will be.

O8ama.

AJ   July 31st, 2008 5:20 pm ET

it riles me up when media says that most of the people know who McCain is but few people know who Obama is. Are you kidding?
Yes, may be 50% of the people know that McCain was POW in VN. What more do they know? Do they know that he was member of Keating 5 that tried to get the crook Charles Keating of the hook for the last banking debacle, do they know that he has gone back on most of his policy positions just to get the nomination – and he has the gall to have ads and say it personally that Obama was willing to lose a war so that he could get the nomination. We know a lot about Obama and we know that he will take this country into a new direction and make us proud to be Americans again. McCain has nothing to stand on (because everyone knows that his presidency will be the 3rd term of Bush) and everyone knows very well what that will do to us. That is why all the republicans can do is keep on attacking Barack.

McCain,
You don't need to play dirty politics to beat Obama.
All you need to do is keep doing your townhall meetings, keep talking tax cuts and drilling and keep reminding Americans of your independent leanings.
Just let Obama fizzle on his own.
He (Obama) has been fading since the Rev. Wright Videos broke.
McCain, just stand back and let Obama beat himself.
That's all you need to do.
This election will fall right in your lap.

Kathy   July 31st, 2008 5:18 pm ET

McCain always pulls the POW card for his military experience. They are what they are. Just talk about the issues and Obama will win. We are sick of the Republicans and their negativity and ruining our economy.

Michael Shea   July 31st, 2008 5:18 pm ET

If I were Obama I would call a press conference and run ads, nationwide, and ask McBush when are we going to focus on the issues instead of this juvenile namecalling and questioning a person's 'False patriotism'. John Wayne has been dead thirty years. The party is over.

Waving the flag and paraising the lord doesn't help a worker who's home is being foreclosed or union job being shipped offshore thank's to McCain's consistent support of corporate free trade agreements.

If McBush wants to play personal attack hardball then the Obama Campaign ought to investigate McBush's mental health records regarding the advanced PTSD he suffered after being a POW which is why McBush has such a horrific temper. They also need to focus on why McBush abandoned his first wife to chase Cindy's millions.

Politics has become a bloodsport. Even family members are being attacked. Look at Michelle Obama questioned about her patriotism.
I quit being a proud American ever since "Reagun" was elected.

By the way I'm a Vietnam swiftboat veteran.

McCain's campaign NEVER talks about what he wants to do for the country; only negativity.
This is not 2004. YouTube, and the internet will not allow Bush/McSame to use the swiftboat tactics unchecked. All the "wink wink" insinuations by McSame will not protect him from the voter's wrath from the negative campaigning. The American people aren't stupid.

Eric ( Minnesota)   July 31st, 2008 5:15 pm ET

McCain is such a joke. All they do is go negative, and they are trying to pretend Obama is the one who is negative. GIVE US A BREAK!!
You would think with all of McCain's so called experience, that he would be able to do more than just criticize Obama.

Ronnie, Atlanta, GA   July 31st, 2008 5:14 pm ET

You fools that claim you have all this "proof" that is so easy to find on the internet that Obama is a liar and an empty suit can you just for once show me some of that proof.

Also, I am a white male and all of my white, black, hispanic and asian friends are firmly now on Barack Obamas side. The foolish PUMAs and angry republicans can continue to use the lowest stupid and devisive attacks but it won't work this time. So stop trolling the forums everywhere and actually come up with real arguments against Obama. Try something like, "I don't agree with his plan for taxes and the economy" or "I don't think he has a good plan for Iraq". All of this name calling, telling lies and comparing to unfavorables is getting you nowhere. It shows the rest of the world how ignorant you are. Get a real argument or shut up.

As long as Obama stays black, the race card will always be an issue.

Funny how no one ever talkS about his other side..WHITE.

Lesley   July 31st, 2008 5:13 pm ET

Divisive, negative, shameful and wrong describes the McCain campaign to a T. They are concentrating on personally attacking Obama more than even setting up their own agenda and making a case for McCain to be elected. McCain apparently thinks that this is the way to go, despite even his most ardent supporters who are telling him to knock it off. He is being called out by the media and still continues on his tirade. I hope this guy doesn't bumble his way into the WH.

Gary of El Centro, Ca   July 31st, 2008 5:10 pm ET

"Sad" is the operative word in McCain's statement. It describes his whole campaign thus far. Making this claim about the "race" card is just his way of reminding people about Obama's "race" and hoping that it will matter to enough people to get him back into the running. I hope we have come further than that as a society and that we will prove McCain wrong. This country needs "smart" in the White House for a change, and it doesn't matter what color it comes in.

Daze and confuse the voters...throw in some "race card" accusations to really dig deep into that politics of hate base of voters.

McCain has to resort to pathetic name calling, insults and attack ads because they don't want people to really focus on the issues.

RAY IN NJ   July 31st, 2008 5:09 pm ET

McCain's strategy is plain and simple, as proven by his decision to attack Obama's visiting the troops and if he didn't visit the troops. His strategy is to attack whatever Obama does or says – no matter if it's the truth or not. He is becoming a pathetic excuse of a politician. This is so indicative of what the American will get if he's the next president – more lies, insincerity, double-speak, and callous disregard for the intellect of Americans! It is incredulous that he's so close in the polls. What's sadder is when you factor in those who admittedly are racists. This means that they would rather go through 4 more years of misery rather than vote for a black man. That, my friends, is complete and utter insanity! You're drowing and you'd refuse the life-line based on the rescuer's race! Crazy!

So far it appears the only thing he knows about himself is that he can whine like the there's no tomorrow.
Whinning won't lower gas prices (neither will offshore oil drilling), lower the price of food, increase jobs, help fix the mortgage crisis and it sure won't give us the kind of health insurance McCain has that allows him to go to the mayo clinic every 3 months for check ups.

Obama and his supporters would love to be able to blaim someone else for using the race card, but the only real racial overtones in this race came from Obama's camp. His 20 year friends, can be thanked for that....the Rev Jeremiah Wright and Father Pfleger. The Obama camp is destroyed over the fact that they have no one to blame but themselves......and it was their ace up the sleeve if things started going wrong! Sorry guys! You've already played that ace!

justin in CO   July 31st, 2008 5:03 pm ET

mccain, in arbitrarily accusing obama of playing the race card is actually falling right into line with what obama said the repubs would do- play into fear, in part based on his race.
mccain knows accusing obama of playing the race card is going to freak out a lot of apprehensive voters, whether or not it's a credible accusation.

Maggie   July 31st, 2008 5:03 pm ET

I can't believe the nerve of the Obama camp.

First, it accuses McCain of preparing to play the race card against him.

Then, when McCain takes umbrage, Obama camp plays a dance in which it 1) says that Obama's comment had nothing to do about race, but about him from coming outside of Washington (um, how dumb does he think we all are?!), and 2) accuses the McCain camp of trying to avoid talking about the issues. Um, by raising this point in the first place, wasn't it the Obama camp that was trying to avoid talking about the issues?!!

Wendy   July 31st, 2008 5:03 pm ET

What next. Let's stop being puppets for Cable TV News. Obama's central theme is – we as Americans must work together to change the way Washington works. All of this other B.S. is just that, B.S. for their ratings.

John, Brooklyn, New York   July 31st, 2008 5:03 pm ET

The problem is that nobody is willing to frankly talk about the elephant in the middle of the room – that race is an issue and it matters to many voters.

Mccain wouldn't be attempting scare tactics – nor would Obama feel compelled to address questions about whether he is "black enough" or "too black" (see CNN Unity Conference coverage) is this weren't the case.

There are people who absolutely will not vote for Obama because he is balck and, if McCain had any integrity, rather than whining about Obama playing the race card he should publicly say something like "If you are planning on voting for me because you don't want a black man in the White House – I don't want your vote". On then would he have integrity in my eyes on the obbvious issue of race. Otherwise, he's still the playing race=fear strategy.

Ellie in Aurora, CO   July 31st, 2008 5:01 pm ET

You have all heard the news media and read headlines like, "Can a black man be elected president?" "Is Obama black enough?" – for heaven's sake! Of course race is an issue and Obama has every right to bring it up. Since he has joined the race, have you ever seen so many African American commentators on the news channels? Where were these people before? Don't try to claim that race isn't something that is being used both for and against Obama. We've also heard people talk about his middle name disparagingly – and he doesn't have a right to bring that up? Fear has been used over and over in the last 8 years – that's exactly what Obama is warning against.

GerryM   July 31st, 2008 5:01 pm ET

John McCain’s uses of substitute words for racist attacks against Barack Obama are totally transparent. McCain thinks we are so stupid that we do not recognize that what McCain really means is that Obama is a black man and black men should not be the president of the United States. What could John McCain know about the ‘race card’ anyhow? He is the product of a privilege so far removed from normal ordinary Americans that he could not possibly known what real racial discrimination is. Senator Obama withstood the racial attacks during the primary campaign and he will withstand those slung at him now by John McCain.

McCain has yet to disclose what he has to offer the voter. Our economy is in the dumper. Our military is suffering. Our citizens are becoming homeless due primarily to the fact our jobs have been moved to India or Mexico or outsourced. We have no long term plan for the country when it comes to health care, social security, energy and economy. Our government's reputation (not the citizens) around the world is deplorable. Why is your entire focus on your opponent? Please try to offer something of substance and value for the voter to consider.

I'm very confused by this comparison. Has Paris Hilton been speaking to crowds of 200,000? Earned the respect and admiration of world leaders? Risen from a single parent, low-income childhood to be the president of the Harvard Law Review (and the first African American to do it)? Written two books that have inspired a generation?

Race this race that. I'm sick of it.
Don't you realize that everytime the issue of race arises, Barack Obama wins! Every time he can keep that tennis ball in his court, he will continue to score points. He did it successfully against both of the Clintons, and will do it to you too Mccain.
Frankly, I'm tired about hearing about issues of race. Its crap, and we need to seriously get over it. Yes, perhaps we are all genetically predisposed to be judgemental in one way or another, but we should simply acknowledge it and move on.
Let's start talkign about issues, and not the dead end issue of race.

jeff   July 31st, 2008 4:58 pm ET

Obama told audiences that his opponent is trying to make voters “scared” of him because he doesn’t look like past presidents – an apparent reference to being black — and has a “funny name.”

It is not an apparent reference to Obama being black. It is a direct refernce to him saying McBush is going to try and scare voters because Obama is black.
Obama has used the race card and it was not McBush who used it or his campaign.
McBush has a black daughter. More than I can say about Obama

Allen in Hartwell, Ga.   July 31st, 2008 4:58 pm ET

Since the 1960s the GOP has played the race card, and this campaign is no different except for one minor issue...Americans seem to be fed up with the them. There are only so many excuses to explain why Obama isn't the man we want as our president when the only reason is the color of his skin. We all bleed red and cry clear tears.

Independent in Iowa: Yeah, and Googling "Hillary Clinton" gets you all roses, right?

I'm sorry, but Obama's been vetted for over 3/4ths of a year now, and while I've seen a lot come out, none of it has been fatally crippling. None of it shows corruption. Every so-called controversial "tie" he's had, he's explained thoroughly and he's been very forthcoming. Now, he's focusing on issues (even though the MSM just reports the few sentences he says to defend himself against McCain's basless attacks), and McCain can't handle it. Frankly, McCain's just been a hate-monger recently and he's trying to spread lies and/or caricatures to make people doubt Obama. I don't really see much negativity coming from Obama's camp, unless it's a mild negative to combat an inaccurate statement.

If someone had to pin a negative adjective on me, I'd rather be a "whiner" than a "blusterer" anyday. I'd rather hold on to a perceived slight and defend myself then grasp at tons of lies. In one of the two cases, your hands are empty.

Race is what makes the difference in life styles in theis country. Remember Willie Horton? There is a word call truth. We all know that race matters when certain people are vieing for power. Mc cain and his people are using everything possible to win because they have an intelligent opponent with a vision for this country. please America, stop listening to the negative ads about Obama and listen to the things he says and make your own decisions. Why did God give us all a brain and ears? F.B Illinois

Divisive, negative, shameful and wrong???? Really??? Seems to me that pretty much sums up McCain's entire campaign strategy!

becky   July 31st, 2008 4:56 pm ET

I watched his speech on the news about 3 weeks ago. McCain did say "Obama did not fit the image on a dollar bill". I must be honest here. I am white and my first thought was "because he is black"... my second thought was... "how low can this man go". I am not saying that is what McCain meant it to be, but that is how I took it. So yes, I believe McCain did play the "silent race card".

Insulting that McCain thinks Obama dropped the race card. I hate this man more every day. He's made my voting choice go from 50/50 to Obama all the way. Sad for you McCain.

Joan, Ontario   July 31st, 2008 4:55 pm ET

Maybe the words didn't come right out of McCain's mouth, but the things that many of his supporters have said in newspapers (remember the "Baby Mama" headline), on radio shows, in campaigns in the states and on the blogs have been absolutely dreadful. Read the blogs sometime. One good thing that has come out of this is that it shows that Obama is not going to sit back and let the Republicans run their usual attack campaign. He's meeting them head on. Good for him.

I have seen a disturbing comment posted several times on internet blogs and it should be addressed now.

OBAMA HAS ALREADY AGREED TO DEBATE MCCAIN.

Just because he doesn't want to travel the country with McCain does not mean that they won't debate. There is plenty of time for that and after 20 primary debates, he deserves to do the next when he wants and where he wants.

People make no sense   July 31st, 2008 4:53 pm ET

Republicans are great at being divisive. Their plan is too turn everything onto Obama and then hit him with the kitchen sink once everyone is immune to their racist messages. How many times have they said something and then turned it on Obama? It is such ashame that the 42% of Americans are too stupid to understand the real issues and lies being told. What do you expect from the country that elected George Bush twice?

Gordon, Houston, TX   July 31st, 2008 4:53 pm ET

I sure wish I could get a comment out of moderation before comments close on a CNN article. Watch. This one, with absolutely no information will be the only comment they'll release.

Just in case it is, I just briefly say, "John McCain, grow the hell up!"

Martha   July 31st, 2008 4:53 pm ET

The sad fact is that McCain is grasping for straws. What does he mean when he says Obama is playing the race card? He means, I don't know what else to say. Or, I don't know how to express my policies so that the voters will want to vote for me so I just keep attacking, attacking in any way I can think of.

This is a candidate for the highest office in the United States of America. My beloved country. I don't care if political campaigns have always done things like attacking the other candidate.

Enough! The United States of America is in a sorry state. Please, both candidates, tell me how you are going to save my beloved country. What do you propose as solutions?

Marty   July 31st, 2008 4:52 pm ET

Obama did play the race card, he played it against Hillaryy too. Does he even remember that he is half white? He was raised by the white half not the black half so I'd say that makes him more white. Get over yourself Obama.

why can't Obama bring up the fact that McCain dumped his previous wife for Cindy after he realized she wouldn't walk again after an accident. I think that would be fair too.

Henry n New York   July 31st, 2008 4:52 pm ET

McCain offers no new ideas; no new way of campaigning; no sense of honesty; a lack of integrity and all to win an election. No, he won't loose a war to win an election but he will lie, cheat, steal, deceive, misrepresent and condone bigotry.

He has made statements one day and said he never said them the next only to change his words once seeing the video tape. He has said Obama is responsible for the high price of oil as if he were already president; he was against off shore drilling but now that he thinks the idea could win him votes he's for it and, its Obama's fault for the high price of oil. If Obama has this much clout and he isn't president please put him in office so he can change all things with his presents.

McCain now says Obama is using the race card. But, McCain in subtle ways has suggested that Mr. and Mrs. Obama are black militants and has his followers trying to instill fear of the Obamas' in any person that will listen to his baseless statements. This is what he offers us as Presidential character?

Then when he worked the with the groupe of Attorney's. NOT ONE TIME did he ever face a Judge on his own merrits.

And the List goes on , an on.

I say go ahead an vote him in , an you can kiss this Country good bye. An go back to the Horse an Buggie, For if he lets Iran , continue as is. An they sneak an EMP attack on America. None of the your toys,,will work, for no electric, so now your cars will not run. Your water supply is gone.No cold beer, An more . An you still want to put this Muslim in the white House. How Blind are , so many. So go Kiss his Upper Lip ,

So he can say, no missile defense system, again, again.

Obama is a joke. Higher taxes, no plan for gas prices, statements being made about having "talks with Al Queda" and yet people still back him? Yes we can? Yes we can...do what? Run this country into the ground with Obama as president. Maybe he wouldn't be compared to celebrities if he didn't act like one and pose for People magazine/OK magazine.

The race card is lame, but it was going to be in the media at some point. By the way, he smokes...cigarettes. Isn't that supposed to be an instant demerit in today's society. If McCain smoked, he would be chastised. Oh wait, its called a DOUBLE STANDARD!

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   July 31st, 2008 4:50 pm ET

I disagree that the race card was played by Obama, but I can see why McCain feels so, being as sensitive as he is right now.

Too bad though, as Obama has, in the worse case scenario, pulled an "attack on Iraq for preemptive pruposes."

So now, if the Reps try to go down that path, Obama has told us they would.

Moreover, it's a subtle way to tell people who aren't an ethnic minority that's it okay to vote for someone who isn't in the ethnic majority.
How about that for a sanitized explanation?

E for Obama   July 31st, 2008 4:50 pm ET

lee   July 31st, 2008 4:48 pm ET

The accusation of race card by McCain's manager and McCain himself are not valid watch the entire economy speech in Springfield, MI on youtube. When Sen. Obama talked about " scare" he meant scare to take risk on the election, to take risk to vote for him (OBAMA) Clear and simple. There is no indication of otherwise. McCain blew it again. He has to say something negative about his opponent and it is a disgust.

Not fooled by negative ads   July 31st, 2008 4:46 pm ET

At three stops in the battleground state of Missouri, Obama told audiences that his opponent is trying to make voters “scared” of him because he doesn’t look like past presidents – an apparent reference to being black — and has a “funny name.”

That's exactly what the mclame camp is doing. What's wrong with a little truth tellin'? too bad mccain has been griping about every word out of obama's mouth for the last month an a half – I think many – including myself, have stopped paying attention to him.

PC   July 31st, 2008 4:43 pm ET

Negative campaigning works. When a candidate get smeared, he/she needs to fight back. McCain's nasty and dishonest attacks will work if Obama doesn't respond appropriately or ignores them. Over the past 40 years, the GOP has won election after election by nominating candidates willing to play off peoples fears and insecurities. While the GOP has had its share of noble and well intentioned advocates, i.e. Barry Goldwater, its upper echelons are now filled with hacks, charlatans, ideoilogiacl simpletons and hateful demagogues and cynical opportunists. McCain may not be one of them, but he is certainly embedded with and beholden to them.

Having personally been called a racist becase I support McCain – I'd agree – Obama, his campaign, and his supporters are all playing the race card.

And talk about dirty politics – they are saying "they won't be surprised when the republicans say this" or the "republicans are trying to scare you by saying this" or any one of a dozen other ways they've framed it – managing to a) play the race card b) accuse their opponents of playing the race card when they NEVER have and c) accusing everyone else of being a racist.

From what I've heard of him, he's far more racist than any republican I know.

Nova from NV   July 31st, 2008 4:40 pm ET

He doesn't like to be asked questions unless he knows the person asking them will give a good record for him. he hates criticisim, it doesn't matter if it is true he will deny it.He has lied about knowing rezko then corned with the truth of his friendship then he flipshis answers. he has never answered question what he did while in the senate in chicago. he gave jobs to people who are being investigated. he was a community activist for the homeless and he never took care of them.he represented these people from his state and they lived in disgustings homes that his friend owned. He has never crossed the ilse in chicago or washington and has always voted on the party line where macain has crossed the isle many times. why did the report come out obama was better at uniting than macain when he clearly mispoke about his record . cnn say the truth and get out of the love in for obama, be a journalist and speak about what is real not a fairy tale.

Kongtooth   July 31st, 2008 4:40 pm ET

Obama does this all the time. If you say he hasn't your blinded by your own cult.

The guy has no substance and crys about everything... while doing it himself. He can't push a thought without someone writting it down for him... and plays the race card if you don't like him.

He's slipping in the polls... when it should be over... this guy is a huge mistake... shoud have gone with Hillary!

Mike   July 31st, 2008 4:40 pm ET

All McSurges BS aside. A vote for McBush is a vote for four more years of the wasteful Iraq War. More young dead Soldiers sacrificed for Big oil. Another Trillion Dollars in War Debt. A ruined economy. More jobs being sent overseas. In short, four more years of Bush.

Marv...   July 31st, 2008 4:40 pm ET

The republicans are truly low and shameful. Where are the Conservative Christians? Will you support this type of politics for the third time?

Robert   July 31st, 2008 4:39 pm ET

Yep – Camp Obama up to their same old dirty tricks....playing the race card for one. Can't trust a word Obama says – be smart America!

Saved   July 31st, 2008 4:39 pm ET

McBitter is running a "clean" campaign. Isn't that what he originally said? I would hate to see what a dirty campaign would be like. Young America vote for Obama are your generation will end up like McBitter.

T-Rex McCain cnnot stand on the issues..he's got NOTHING to offer. So what does he do? Get childlike and silly. Once a man..twice a child. Grow up McCain.

Pam   July 31st, 2008 4:39 pm ET

For crying out loud, when the heck is McCain going to start talking about the issues that people care about? Can anyone remember the last time McCain actually talked about himself and his policies instead of talking about Obama?

swood   July 31st, 2008 4:38 pm ET

What? Someone's accusing the republicans of inserting race into politics? Unheard of! Oh wait, they always do that, even to there own. Remember what Rove and Bush did to McCain back in 2000 with his so-called illegitimate child? Or Harold Ford? How about the subliminal imagery of Obama with two white women – were those really the only two vacuous celebs they could insert in the ads? I mean really, wake up. McCain should stop with dirty politics and get on with the real issues – what does he really stand for and how is he going to get us out of the mess George W got us into?

Marc   July 31st, 2008 4:37 pm ET

There he goes again. I think we've seen this card played before against Sen. Clinton. Attack Obama, well, you must be racist. Ugh… he's right. This isn't politics as usual. Obama's campaign has sunk to an all-time low. The crazy thing is, though, that I've read some interviews with the guy which makes him sound halfway intelligent. However, I can not reward him with the presidency after these outlandish accusations. Nice try, Obama, but you won't bully me into voting for you.

Unfortunately for McCain fans, his maverick days will be forgotten – telling these hateful lies is what he's going to be remembered for. Oh, and for his love of the Steelers. . . er, the Packers.

Putting two white blondes known for public display of privates and Obama together has racial bias written all over it... McCain is playing the card by claiming the other side is playing the card...

McCain can't be saved by this desparation... where does McCain stand on the real issues: economy, economy economy.... war??? do any McCain supporters know where McCain stands? of course they don't its just good enough to have attack ads... disgusting.

Rocky   July 31st, 2008 4:35 pm ET

I have to disagree with Senator McCain on this I don't think Senator Obama is playing the race card. I think he actually believes that if he loses the election it will be because he's black. He is wrong, he will lose because he is an elitist liberal to the extreme. The moderates need to take the Democratic back from these extremist.

Unity   July 31st, 2008 4:35 pm ET

McCain is going after the Bubba vote and throwing every person of color to the wind. Is this the strategy you find admirable in your next commaner in chief????

Former Repub   July 31st, 2008 4:35 pm ET

The truth is, The republicans are trying to make OBAMA out as a risky outsider, trying to make him look weird, where the race card comes into play I can't see. this spikes a lot of anger from the "conservatives" b/c it reveals the truth about them, the main reasons why 10-20% are going to vote for McCain will be simply b/c of race. That's a fact, the conservatives don't like to be called racist so accusing OBAMA of playing race card is typical of them.

Eye Opener   July 31st, 2008 4:35 pm ET

I am ashamed of this idiot McCain. This idiot cant do anything apart from doing exactly what Bush did.

Hillary 2012   July 31st, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Obama has started to play the race card just like he did against Hillary. The only CHANGE Obama brings to the table is that he is Black ..period. If we want REAL CHANGE we would have Hillary as President.. a woman president now that is REAL CHANGE. Obama has no experience and will lie his way to win..so watch out America...we may have another George Bush the only CHANGE is this one is black.

Dedrick from Atlanta (in Portland)   July 31st, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Barack is not about white guilt. He is simply stating what a large portion of white america is being subjected to. Listen, white people should not have any guilt. the wrongs committed against people of color where committed in the past. Now that doesn't mean that everything is great here. All societies my protect the rights of minorities because we as people tend to have some 'fear' of the unknown (different). So does Barack have a point? Yes. Just look at the results of the Penn, Ohio, WV primaries. Areas that have large older white populations have a hard time voting for someone of a different race. They all voted for Bush and he had no experience what-so-ever, so don't give me the experience line.

Charlotte   July 31st, 2008 4:35 pm ET

Obamas' arrogance will bring him down. Once people really listen to what he has to say, the less they like him. We already know we must tighen our belts. We already know gas mileage is improved with less driving. DUH.. We don't need this arrogant person in the White House, we just had 7 years of that. He plays the race card everyday. Why does he have to mention the fact he looks different from other candidates. If that isn't racist, what is? The only difference is the color of his skin. He is, as Rev. Wright pointed out, a typical politician. I bet he dreams of his face on Mt. Rushmore. Such arrogance I have never witnessed before. I will write Hillary on my ballot in November and that is one less vote for either of them

Mike Dallas   July 31st, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Kim   July 31st, 2008 4:34 pm ET

McBush is guilty. His Filthy Rovian Attack Ad's are despicable. I have lost all respect for this man. We truly do need a change.

Mike Dallas   July 31st, 2008 4:34 pm ET

Racists = Republicans? This is news? I thought that was one of the bedrock planks in the GOP agenda. McCrypt and Crew seem just a bit sensitive after reading the article all Obama states is that 'he does not look like prior candidates" nor the curretn "safe" candidate, in other words, Really Old People! No race card there, unless "different" vs "safe"equals race.

McCrypt just updates the Republican race attack play book by adding a few new words, i.e. 'exotic' or [insert daily euphemism for "different" here]. So, this Southern 57 year old white guy, hopes that Obama keeps ambushing McCrypt on the only road he knows how to travel, the low road. After all the "Straight Talk Express" seems to have a prepaid toll tag for that tollway!

Tim in Syracuse   July 31st, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Has John McCain specifically said "Don't vote for Obama....he's black"? No. Has he had mouth pieces say it for him in a variety of ways? Yes. Has McCain thrown the old 'Fear Card' out there....yeah....more than I care to tally up actually.

Its the same old Republican Political Machine. If you can't show your differences in a positive way, then go low.

McCain is a racist and I have always known it. He was against affirmative action and against MLK day. Look at his sorry record.

He introduced an ad with two young white women who are recovering substance abuse like his wife Cindy. That is the very first thing that came to mind. His campaign is wacky. DOES HE THINK THAT PEOPLE HAVE FORGOTTEN THAT????? WELL, MCSHAME, THE FIRST THING THAT PEOPLE THINK WHEN THEY THINK OF THESE TWO WOMEN ARE NOT OBAMA - BUT PREVILAGE, MONEY, DRUGS, ALCHOHOL, DISFUNCTION AND THEY LOOK LIKE YOUR WIFE!!!!!

Vegas Barbie for Obama:

Those chants are cult like.

ch   July 31st, 2008 4:32 pm ET

The thing that sickens me about Obama and his campaign is how they played this ugly card against the Clintons.

Bill and Hillary Clinton have a long and well documented history of doing the right thing when it comes to civil rights (and Bill Clinton appointed the most racially diverse cabinet in history).

But Obama and his lower than dirt campaign tried to inflame African Americans in the days before the SC primary by twisting/distorting Hillary’s Dr. King / LBJ comment. Tim Russert even called Obama on it during one of the debates.

It was simply reprehensible and Obama promised much better.

Greg Pottstown, Pa.   July 31st, 2008 4:32 pm ET

Get real, he played the race card and everyone knows it.

At three stops in the battleground state of Missouri, Obama told audiences that his opponent is trying to make voters “scared” of him because he doesn’t look like past presidents – an apparent reference to being black

he doesn’t look like past presidents

If that is him trying to show that the McCain campaign was “using the same old low-road politics to distract voters from the real issues" then he needs to learn the English language. and I don't believe that for a moment.
he played the race card, hand down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brina   July 31st, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Repubicans have been playing the race card since "willie horton" hell they even played it on john mccain with the "he has a black child" and now this pathetic man is trying to label Obama with this silly stuff.

Joe   July 31st, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Nothing new Obama played the race card throughout the primaries and the media just ignored it and blamed everyone else. I'm glad the McCain campaign is speaking out against it. Obama's campaign quietly played and is now playing the race card again and this time I hope they don't get away with it.

Gordon, Houston, TX   July 31st, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Sometimes I can't whether McCain is running for Student Body President or President of the United States.

First with the Paris/Brittney ad and now crying that Obama is playing the race card.

Johnnie Boy, it didn't work for Bill Clinton when he said Barack Obama was playing the race card and it won't for you. Why does your campaign continue to embrace the failed tactics of the Clinton campaign? Did you sleep through the democratic primaries?

Stella   July 31st, 2008 4:31 pm ET

What a laughing stock McRelic is! This is too funny CNN. Obama playing the race card? Obama being compared to Brittney Spears and Paris Hilton? Obama "snubbed" the wounded troops in Berlin? "Obama's not one of us." And on and on it goes. McRelic has run what I believe is probably the worst Presdential campaign in this nation's history. How desparate is this latest allegation. If you can't run on substance and the issues, then run on personal attacks. Sorry but this one is a hoot.

MMN-Milwaukee WI   July 31st, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Distractions I tell ya. Gas prices ($4/gal), Economy is hurting and Exxon-Mobil still managed a 14% growth to the tune of $11.68 billion yes billion and McCain is still pandering to me/us about drilling offshore and then talking up some shmack about what Obama said. McCain is full of himself and it’s odd to hear this from him after all the junk coming from his campaign. McCain it’s really simple, if you spit into the wind, it will blow back on your face.

Sandra   July 31st, 2008 4:31 pm ET

McCain can't have it both ways. As an African American I feel his campaign is playing the race card by saying he is not like us. Instead of pressing Obama on real issues facing America. He wants to talk about Brittany Spears who has no contrast to Barack Obama. She is a pop star and Obama is a politician. Obama is an US Senator, husband, father and I can't forgive McCain for comparing him to a disfunctional pop star singer who is in the tabloids everyday. Give me a break! McCain's campaign is getting to be fully elementary. I can't wait until I get to cast my vote for Barack who has inspired America in hoping for a better future in these times of concern. We need a president who gives America that option instead of the same course of dread and regret we have inherited from this administration. It appears that McBush wants to keep us in a state of feeling distress with this war and instead of giving us an out in these times he wants us to stay in this ever stagnant economy we are in now.

Agnes   July 31st, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Do McBush really think we, the American people are that stupid that we cannot recognize the racial undertones and slurs HIS campaign has been making.

What's the add about, if not about the difference in Obama? We are not afraid of the RNC fear tatics.

GIVE ME A BREAK.

I really don't think McBush want to president. This man is doing everything in his power to lose the elcetion.

I can't say I've heard McCain himself use the race card, but his party, it's members and followers certainly have from day 1. The campaign that should be ashamed of itself is McCain's, for suggesting through ads that are running right now in my state, Michigan, that Obama is nothing more than an empty-headed celebrity like Paris Hilton. Or that, my personal favorite, Obama is personally responsible for the high price of oil in this county. Which is it McCain-is Obama so powerful he can influence the price of gas, or is he nothing but a pretty face? My family and I (4 voters strong!) laugh every time we view one of McCain's attack ads.....is that the response the his campaign was looking for?

McCain's tactics are not only going to cost him the White House, they'll end up costing him re-election his Senate seat in Arizona. This is a sad end for someone I once considered a decent and upstanding politician.

Former Republican   July 31st, 2008 4:29 pm ET

McCain is suffering from a bad case of "old timers disease"
And the way he refuses to talk about the issues and instead scoop low playing dirty politics is one of the symptoms....
He needs a good dose of reality to relieve these symptoms and as of late, he's not had any.

This is the new motto:

If you all remember in the primaries Obama was caught addressing his workers telling them the the same thing as to how to use this statement when working the campaign. There was no press in the room but someone got him on their cell phone. He is a race bater
no question about that. Wake up you people. He will do anything to win this election but just as always he slithers away just like the snake that he is.

Obama playing the race card? Is race an issue in this campaign? Is this the idea that African Americans will not vote for Obama because he is half Caucasian? Oops, I forgot: African Americans are not so low minded as that...

He's right. Obama could have said a million other things. And perhaps what he said is true, but you can't say something like that and not expect to be challenged.

No republican to this point has said ANYTHING concerning his race, name, religion or so forth...mind you that was all done by the democrats themselves in the dibacle you called a primary! so before everyone goes projecting their misguided beliefs, dig into the real origin of these comments...the democratic party!

Michael   July 31st, 2008 4:26 pm ET

What A joke! I am not voting for him because I don't like what he stands for and what he is about... it has nothing to do with the fact that he is half white and half black.

Independent in Iowa   July 31st, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Also, read what he said.

"Obama told audiences that his opponent is trying to make voters “scared” of him because he doesn’t look like past presidents – an apparent reference to being black — and has a “funny name.”

Sounds pretty obvious to me that he played not only the race card, but another for nationality.

Not that it matters to bots, but PUMAs can see the real deal.

deepintheheart   July 31st, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Ok, so let's turn this around…

What if McCain was speaking in front of an audience and he says "the other side will try to make you afraid of me because I'm older than any of the previous presidents, they will try to convince you that I'm feeble or that I'm not physically able to handle being president". Would any sane person, based on what McCain said, charge him with playing the age card? Absolutely not, to imply so would be ridiculous. So is the McCain campaing doing this to Obama?

Really, this is yet another desperate attempt to attack Obama every chance he can get. He can't come up with anything better and it's just getting sad.

What a crock. Obama's campaign dares to state that they do not play old politics? Anyone that can Google can find all kinds of things about this liar. Obama plays it by saying what wants to be heard and throwing anyone under the bus that busts the real deal out. Even going as far as selecting who from the press could go with him on his rock star tour. What happened to freedom of the press? Is he going to control that now, too?
