(CNN) – After a week of bare-knuckle political brawling on the trail, it seemed Friday John McCain’s campaign had found religion.
In a Web ad e-mailed to supporters, the McCain team painted Barack Obama as a recipient of near-messianic hype – and a candidate all-too-willing to believe it.
“It shall be known that in 2008 the world will be blessed. They will call him ‘The One,’” says the announcer in the minute-long video, over images of light shining from the heavens and a gospel music-like soundtrack, interspersed with clips drawn from Obama speeches.
“And he has anointed himself. Ready to carry the burden of The One,” continues the announcer. “He can do no wrong. Can you see the light?”
By the end of the ad, Obama seems to have received a promotion from mere Messiah to possible divinity: Charlton Heston’s Moses is shown parting the Red Sea, proclaiming “Behold His mighty hand!” as Obama’s presidential seal rises from the waters.
“Barack Obama may be the one. But is he ready to lead?” concludes the announcer.
On a flight to Panama City Florida, McCain senior adviser Nicolle Wallace told reporters that the video had been designed as a bookend to what the campaign believed had been a very successful week.
In a CNN poll of polls Friday, the Arizona senator cut Obama’s Monday lead by half, to three points.
Wallace added that the ad – which she described as respectful of all faiths - was intended to rally the presumptive Republican nominee’s supporters, and that there was an "important role for humor in all campaigns. I think all of us would slit our wrists if it wasn't for that."

So Senator McCain is presidential ... this is disappointing.
Hey CNN, why are you supporting McCain so much lately. It is obvious. He makes mistake after mistake after mistake on TV yet you rarely focus on this. Right now on your news show , he is barely making sense in his answers to reporters!! He lies constantly-he even has the nerve to say he is proud of his negative campaign and now he won't even admit that his campaign has false information in it???? Where is your fact checking CNN?? Thank goodness for FACT CHECK .ORG. Although McCain just mentioned that he pays no mind to websites he doesn't know...HUH????
the guy is archaic
lol – love it!!! Keep it up McCain... you're better than anticipated.
Sounds like McBush STOLE this from Billary..."and the skies will part" crap she sang during the primaries. Typical Republican slime stuff....an to think people will ACTUALLY vote Republican again! Ignorance knows no bounds.
i hope McCain has sun block...i hear it gets really hot in hell
This is the last straw. It's time for the media to step in and do their job. Call this Republican campaign what it really is: dirty, dishonest, shameful.
Oh my goodness. That is one of the most pathetic, whining, child-like political ads I have ever seen! Come on! He is trying to play off the idiotic idea that some have that Obama is the anti-christ. McCain has stooped to low, low levels with this one. Between this ad and the one with Paris Hilton, how does anyone take his arguments seriously? Sad that this is all that McCain can come up with!
Are these guys actually serious? Do they think the American public are a bunch of muppets?

I guess that just reinforces what McCain said about being proud to be throwing out dirty tactics all week long. The said part is – this garbage worked yet again. This would be a good time to find that button that says – "Beam me up Scotty, there is no intelligent life down here!"
Obama's popularity is definitely causing the McCain camp to take dirty blows. And what does he mean "he can do know wrong," he is scrutinized by REP about every step he takes (that's just it–they want obama to sit down) .
Obama is just a well spoken guy running for office–who wants to be the tool for americans in making a change in old politics. Mccain is old politics.
oh yeh he is the one .....so .
That's a good ad. It draws out the feelings of a lot of Americans about Obama. Many think he has been "chosen" by the party leaders and given this "messiah-like" persona. And he lives that life of celebrity and grand speeches. A lot of hype and not much substance.
I cannot believe that McCain would fall to this level. VERY unfortunate.....
Does John McLame have anything to say about himself? Before, I disliked McSurge, now I just feel sorry for him
Shame on us all.
They won the week by insulting our intelligence with lies and distortion (troop visit, make opponent responsible for high gas prices, interpret and whip out a race card from comments opponents has been making for months to appeal to everyone of us that has felt uncomfortable about being potentially accused ratially in the past, equate a sitting senator to teenage celebrity).
That is why we are where we are today – republican, democrat, PUMA, or whatever we call ourself. It is the negatives inside us which responds to these things that make them successful. You would think our pockets will teach us something after 8 years of poor leadership.
"... I think all of us would slit our wrists if it wasn't for that." -GOP
Don't let me get in your way!!
Wow McCain.. so much for no negative tactics.. your campaign is despicable.
I would hate to see a McCain ad that actually featured John McCain. So would everybody else so I guess that's why they only talk about Obama.
McCain has now officially jumped the shark. Call him "The Done".
We demanded more seriousness when we voted for president of my fraternity.
Has McCain no dignity at all?
If he just puts out a few more ads like this, his "Road to The White House" will be vritually non-existant.
My God...(no pun intended), is this all his campaign will do is put out totally ridiculous ads? I find it pathetic and disgusting. It is as if the man is possessed! I have never disliked John McCain and have always felt that even though a Republican, seemed a stand-up guy. I am extremely disappointed that he and his campaign have sunk to this level. Even though I will vote for Obama, if I was a Republican, I would never be able to vote for him. I am beginning to question the man's sanity and integrity. So pathetic.
SO, now instead of dealing with substantive issues like the war [he's for 100 years] and the economy [about which he knows nothingn being married to an heiress and having friends who call Americans "a bunch of whiners"] we're quoting the "gospel" of "THE MATRIX"???? What the hell is your campaign smoking???
Disgusting. Plain and simple.
Has it ever occurred to either candidate, especially McCain, that WE don't care about the ads? Americans are more concerned about "trying to stay afloat." However, the McCain campaign has accompolished a mission, this ad will be "hot topic" on the cable news channels for the next week.
This is a waste of good money. No one sees Obama as "the one" and if they do, they need their head examined.
Message to the McCain staffers – GET OVER IT AND DO SOMETHING POSITIVE. Enough is enough already!
