McCain ad on Obama: 'They will call him The One'

A new McCain Web ad pegs Obama as ‘The One.’

(CNN) – After a week of bare-knuckle political brawling on the trail, it seemed Friday John McCain’s campaign had found religion.

In a Web ad e-mailed to supporters, the McCain team painted Barack Obama as a recipient of near-messianic hype – and a candidate all-too-willing to believe it.

“It shall be known that in 2008 the world will be blessed. They will call him ‘The One,’” says the announcer in the minute-long video, over images of light shining from the heavens and a gospel music-like soundtrack, interspersed with clips drawn from Obama speeches.

“And he has anointed himself. Ready to carry the burden of The One,” continues the announcer. “He can do no wrong. Can you see the light?”

By the end of the ad, Obama seems to have received a promotion from mere Messiah to possible divinity: Charlton Heston’s Moses is shown parting the Red Sea, proclaiming “Behold His mighty hand!” as Obama’s presidential seal rises from the waters.

“Barack Obama may be the one. But is he ready to lead?” concludes the announcer.

On a flight to Panama City Florida, McCain senior adviser Nicolle Wallace told reporters that the video had been designed as a bookend to what the campaign believed had been a very successful week.

In a CNN poll of polls Friday, the Arizona senator cut Obama’s Monday lead by half, to three points.

Wallace added that the ad – which she described as respectful of all faiths - was intended to rally the presumptive Republican nominee’s supporters, and that there was an "important role for humor in all campaigns. I think all of us would slit our wrists if it wasn't for that."

Apparently McCain is going for the "sour grapes" vote, attacking his candidate for being well spoken and likable.

I see an Obama commercial in the future, with clips of the "Maverick" sucking up to Bush and the Religious Right and anyone else who can move his campaign along.

Or maybe an Obama video called "The OLD One", playing off the Charlton Heston imagery. Sample narration: "Senator, I knew Moses. Moses was a friend of mine. You're no Moses!"

Does McCain really want to play this game?

I don't if Mc Cains crew of deft handlers relize it or not but his main base of voters are card carring christans. To use this type of hypocrasy is going too far. John you are going to loose your base if this continues. Shame on you.

Wow, now the GOP gets to use religion negatively for votes. Can they have it both ways? Isn't it great to see the GOP squirm for a change!

Why does he keep telling us why we shouldn't like Obama rather than why we should like him! Where are the issues. This is clearly just becoming a spear campaign. Shame on McCain. I know he's better than this. And of course Obama SEEMS ELITIST, HE'S RUNNING FOR ONE OF THE MOST POWERFUL POSITIONS IN THE WORLD WHERE YOUR'RE PRETTY MUCH SAYING YOU'RE CAN DO A BETTER JOB OF RUNNING THIS COUNTRY THAN MILLIONS OF OTHER AMERICANS. MCCAIN IS AN ELITIST AS WELL, YOU HAVE TO BE TO BE PRESIDENT.

Just how dumb do they think independent voters are ? The ONLY "positive" angle I can see in this would be that they are trying to make his popularity into a joke, something to laugh at and not take serious....

Somehow I don't think Senator Obama will be the one laughed at...Grand pa is lame and boring and so are his ads and ideas.

  15. empty vessel

It would have been more effective if it included Chris Matthews (who SHOULD be non-partisan as he is the MODERATOR of a panel show on MSDNC) saying that he get's a feeling down his leg when the "chosen one" speaks.

They could have thrown in Hillary rightfully mocking the "celestial choirs" speech that she CORRECTLY gave in regards to the "unproven one".

Hillary and Bill were right about everything they said about this phony and the swooning media is culpable in ME as a Republican, THANKING you for you all being part and parcel for not nominating the FAR, FAR superior Clinton, but this empty vessel.

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory Dems, again........

Now that is rich. Wonder if it will help McCain. Wonder what the response will be. Hope they show McCain looking 8 years older with us still in troops still in Iraq saying "only 92 more years to go and we will have them beat".

I'd definitely vote for the candidate who only focuses on preaching his own policy and ideas without attacking other competitors. Unfortunately there is none.

what a truly disgusting man John McCain is, and what a truly disgusting entity is the modern republican party. There's no such thing as a "low-road" when you're always willing to go lower.

This is shaping up to be – it's not there quite yet – the dirtiest campaign run by a major Presidential candidate in the history of the office. Even worse: it's working.

Jostle me when "White Hands, Part 2: Helms/Mccain Boogaloo" meets my TV screen.
