McCain took a few swipes at Obama in his speech to the Urban League Friday.
McCain took a few swipes at Obama in his speech to the Urban League Friday.

(CNN) - John McCain dropped one name that’s figured prominently in recent veepstakes talk in a Friday speech - praising a Louisiana education initiative supported by that state’s governor, Bobby Jindal.

CNN's Political Market: Jindal's stock goes up

“Just ask the families in New Orleans who will soon have the chance to remove their sons and daughters from failing schools, and enroll them instead in a school-choice scholarship program,” he told the Urban League in Orlando Friday. “That program in Louisiana was proposed by Democratic state legislators and signed into law by Governor Bobby Jindal. Just three years after Katrina, they are bringing real hope to poor neighborhoods, and showing how much can be achieved when both parties work together for real reform.”
Earlier: VP buzz rises around Jindal

Last week, Jindal – who is widely believed to be on McCain’s VP shortlist - seemed to take himself out of the running, telling an interviewer he would not be joining the GOP ticket this cycle.

"I'm not going to be the vice presidential nominee or vice president. I'm going to help Senator McCain get elected, as governor of Louisiana," he told a FOX interviewer.

"Let me be clear: I have said in every private and public conversation, I've got the job that I want."

GOP sources gave told CNN the 37-year-old Jindal is being considered for the keynote address slot at next month’s Republican National Convention.

In his July appearance before the NAACP, John McCain was full of praise for opponent Barack Obama.

With a new month comes a new message: the presumptive Republican nominee’s speech Friday at the Urban League’s annual gathering in Orlando was a polar opposite of that address. McCain mentioned several black leaders – including former Democratic Rep. Harold Ford Jr. and activist Al Sharpton – by name as he lauded bi-partisan efforts to overhaul the nation’s school systems. But the presumptive Democratic nominee, who is slated to address the group tomorrow, rated several swipes.

"You'll hear from my opponent, Senator Obama tomorrow, and if there's one thing he always delivers it's a great speech,” said McCain as he began his address, which criticized Obama on issues ranging from tax policy to education reform. “But I hope you'll listen carefully, because his ideas are not always as impressive as his rhetoric."

Later, talking about his support for school vouchers, he added: "If Senator Obama continues to defer to the teachers unions, instead of committing to real reform, then he should start looking for new slogans."

Why is Senator McCain putting out all the negative ads? Is it because he really doesn't have a clue about helping America out of the mess the Republicans helped to make?

It's pretty sad when you have to tear someone else down to make yourself look good.

By the way, Senator McCain needs to stop with the so-called jokes regarding women, war and religion. It will eventually backfire because he's not funny and doesn't seem to know or care when he crosses the line.

Americans are fools. We all know that. Voting for Bush instead of Gore and again for Bush instead of Kerry. With America in recession they are about to vote Bush's mirror image into the whitehouse. Next thing? Iran bombed and bombed, Iran attacked Israel, Middle East in crisis, oil price, food price over the roof...

Being fooled in the last two presidential elections isn't enough for some people, I suppose. The fact is, McCain is NOT proposing much of any substance that would be different from the president that everyone agrees was a complete disaster (even the republicans). Taxes, energy, education, defense, what's different. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on you, Fool me a third time, shame on me.

Why????   August 1st, 2008 4:58 pm ET

What McCain knows about "The One” when he doesn't believe in anything. What is McCain faith anyway?

Enough of this bull what about this economy, the high gas prices, the unemployment rate, the lead in toys, the food poisoning, the unjust I have endure for many years. What does McCain bring to the table, nothing but a lot of outrages ads? Enough of this bull, let’s talk about the important things that matter in this election. Every other word that comes out of McCain mouth is Obama. Does McCain knows anything about politic? Or is he the empty headed one.

What about these town hall meetings that McCain conduct. The people that attend just sit there like they are under a spell; what’s up with that?

The republican have been on top far too long and that is why we are in this mess. It’s time to break the barrels and tear down these walls.

To all of you still scared that Obama is inexperienced and not ready to lead – this is simply not true.
Here's a list of past presidents that when elected into office had less political experience than Obama. George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, Woodrow Wilson, William Taft, Theodore Roosevelt, Grover Cleveland, Chester A. Arthur, Rutherford B. Hayes, Ulysses S. Grant, Abraham Lincoln, Zachary Taylor, William Henry Harrison, Andrew Jackson.

A war hero handling war issues is safer than someone with a self-proclaimed academic judgment! S. Obama has been heard to mention the "57 states" of the US and "Israel is the best friend of Israel." It is more acceptable for S. McCain to mispeak once in while because of his age and because he does not flaunt his intellectual prowess. On the contrary, S. Obama likes to show off his youth, charm and style... it is hard to imagine that he mispoke often too...

McCain is going to lose and Hillary will not be President nor Vice President either. Get over it. And MainStream forget about Colin Powell as a VP for McCain. Colin Powell wants nothing to do with John McCain. Colin Powell is a man of great courgage and dignity. He would never want to be part of the low road, baselessness and personal attacks John McCain is using against Obama. He has already strongly hinted that he will endorse Obama anyway.

Today is another day for McCain filled with pathetic demagogy. I noticed that McCain is stealing other people’s ideas and accomplishments and presents them as his own. By the way, has he undergone mental and psychological evaluation recently? It appears he has serious mental and psychological issues. I believe that he does not remember what he was saying yesterday, much less some time ago. He is confusing and twisting facts and lying constantly. Telling lies can also be an indication of a mental condition. He is “chewing” on “surge” issue to the point that it turns one’s stomach. And his explosive temper and infamous “Bomb, bomb, bomb…Iran”? He sounds like a blood-thirsty monster. By prepared for more wars, people, if McCain is elected.

Still for Hill....apparently you don't know much about your own candidate because on all the issues you mentioned, she and Barack were on the same page. And if you want to talk women's issues, why don't you take a look at McCain's stance against birth control being covered by insurance but allowing Viagra. That's not very pro-woman. And he's keeping awfully quiet about whether birth control should be defined as "abortion" as the Bush administration is proposing. PLUS, you do realize that he started seeing his current (much younger) wife while still married to and living with his last wife. Those examples alone speak volumes about his character and his respect for women.

NO WAY MCCAIN!

Brad   August 1st, 2008 4:24 pm ET

I think Bobby Jindal would make a great PRESIDENT...once he's obtained some more experience under his belt. But I like Jindal, I think he's a good guy. He would be a great choice for VP. All the Republican/Bush haters are blind, biased, under-researched, and will vote for whoever their party picks, even though McCain is a much more moderate candidate than Obama.

Hope, I have hope just not the audacity to blindly hope. We need more than words; we need someone who knows how to do the work. What work has Sen. Obama done? Sen. Clinton has 30 plus years of real civil rights leadership, actual gains that has allowed the disadvantaged to have a voice and that has allowed for this very discussion of Sen. Obama’s candidacy. What has Sen. Obama done for America? Local community outreach and state senatorial voting record of present are not enough to say he is experienced. And as the chairman of the Subcommittee on European Affairs with jurisdiction over NATO’s operations, he didn’t call a meeting in two years, two years! Is this how we can expect him to execute his office? It is the Executive branch not the legislative branch I’m concerned with- as the President is the top executor of the country.

Change, what change and by whom? I want change, truly I do, but how will that change come and by which path? Since Sen. Obama was instilled as the DNC’s puppet over the people’s choice, can anyone tell me what the change will be? (Say what you must but Tammany Hall is live and well in Chicago and in the DNC; it’s been lurking, waiting to raise it’s ugly head since FDR.) Is this an example of the type of administration we could expect from Sen. Obama? Strong arm tactics. What a glorious way to capture the nomination. It's not about the journey but about the end results.... RIGHT? Will this be our legacy to the future?

How exactly will Sen. Obama approach the issues facing our great nation? Let’s face the fact that his experience – community outreach and a state senatorial voting record of "Present," does not qualify him for the office of the President of the United States of America – one in which the new President will face the effects of global warming, war, commodities shortages- everything from fresh water and oil to wheat, economic "downturn" and health issues ranging from rogue viruses to tainted food/products. Many of these issues span an international spectrum. Where exactly does Sen. Obama exhibit the experience to effectively deal with these issues? (Who do you want performing your open heart surgery, the professor or the surgeon?) It takes more than being able to talk about how something is supposed to act, (anyone who has just come out of college to start a new job can attest to that;) it takes the experience of actually doing the work. We need change and we need proven leadership – on day one. In my opinion the only person who has the qualifications to effectively handle all the issues facing our nation is Hillary Clinton. This is the reason so many of her campaign advisors are now working with Obama, because he knows Hillary was the true candidate of change. In my opinion the only person who has the qualifications to effectively handle all the issues facing our nation is Hillary Clinton. Barack as Chief Executive?… never. This 30 year democrat will write in Hillary for president and not Obama, no matter who his running mate. I found him lacking and still do.

McCain has only SAID that Jindal is in consideration to make voters think that he would add a person of color to his ticket. This fairly screams simplicity, though, on McCain's part: "I've got to have someone of a different color on my ticket in order to have fighting chance against an African American candidate". What he is failing to realize is that Barack Obama is so much more than just an African American candidate. Jindal is a token for McCain. No way he is going to be the VP choice.

This from an indifferent high school student and college drop out, with absolutely no credentials in journalism, political science, or even history. "I served in the U.S. Navy and there are Navy veterans here who have sailed on Navy ships around the world for more than 60 years with nuclear power plants on them," he said this month in Ohio. "There has never been a recorded case that I know of where someone has been injured, killed or had ill effects of those nuclear power plants."

YET:
"Accidents involving American and Soviet ships, bombers and rockets have left at least 50 warheads and nine nuclear reactors scattered on the ocean floors," The New York Times reported in 1989, citing a report by Greenpeace that counted 799 accidents involving American nuclear-powered ships, subs and aircraft.

Remember Blanco's finest hour in Katrina, one of, if the not the lowest point in the history of the state. "Pray for us" was her answer while folks drowned in their attics! Jindal has already vetoed bills after he stated he would not interfere in the pay scale of the state employess, that of course, until they doubled their salary. Then he stepped in and vetoed the new legistration OOPS! Show's a lot of good judgement there. Not to mention the man believes the earth is only 6,000 years old so that his creationist dogma is a good fit.

Obama's best idea today is to take money from oil companies. That's messing with my 401K and yours. We all own a part of the oil companies...

Instead of fixing the problem, Obama wants to steal from the rich to give to the poor. Obama, is Robin Hood in there somewhere?

Obama says no to drilling, nuclear power, etc. His rebate plan is a farce and our children will once again be paying for it.

If I can't have Hill, I'm voting McCain (the lesser of two evils and at least he has a record to base an opinion).

who woke you from your nap!!!!   August 1st, 2008 2:45 pm ET

why is it not reported in the News about all of the big Washington LOBBYIST running john mccain's campaign…Wayne Berman-Chevron, Eric Burgeson-BP, Frank Donatelli-EXXON (12 billion dollar profits this quorter), Rebbecca Anderson-Sunoco, CHARLIE BLACK-Occidental Petro.(still on pay roll), Nancy Pfotenhauer-Kock Ind.(see her often on CNN), Randy Scheunemann-Amco to name a few. why don't we see reports about how Mccain took $100,000.00from Lowell Paxson, McCain would write 2 letters to the FCC recommending they allow Paxson's purchase a Pittsburgh TV station. why has it not been reported that Mccain was against off shore drilling UNTIL McCain got MILLIONS from Big OIL? if i were a Repub…i would say STAY AWAY TOO. Americans can not afford McCain, Oh one more thing( not about ageism), but do you really think McCain can serve two terms?

tony   August 1st, 2008 2:44 pm ET

Let's truly be honest-THere is more trash talking about McCain and some about Obama on these blogs -than either candidate could ever say--It is a lot worse here because most of you are cowards who could never say it to someone's face–
Let's try and be civil-
WE have a great country which allows Freedom of Speech-
Thank God for that or most of you in some foreign countries would be in Jail–
It's funny that most of the trash talking comes from the DEms–
Just chec k it out-

It really doesn't matter if McCain puts Jindal, Pawlenty, Portman, Romney, etc on his ticket. They each have a lot of baggage and are "risky" choices. McCain sure does look a lot older lately. Are you sure he is only 72ish? We have a minimum age to run our country as President; why don't we have a maximum age? We are one of the youngest countries in the world. How come we have to have such old candidates with such outdated, old ideas? Believe me, Bill Gates wasn't in his 70s when he founded Microsoft.

Susan S., Wyoming   August 1st, 2008 2:40 pm ET

Wow, looking at these comments, I am *so glad* to be a Democrat with Obama as my candidate. The truth is there is really no VP choice that helps McCain because his party's positions are so intellectually and morally bankrupt, just like him. (Which in McCain's case is very sad because he was a better person once upon a time.)

Senator McCain needs to address the underlying problem. The problem isn't vouchers. The problem is that we have sub-par educational systems.

Get them all on the same standards of providing quality education, and nobody would have to worry about vouchers to send the kids to a better school.

Does the plan include keeping the life boat small for getting kids from failing schools designed to keep the numbers down so that the currently well off have less competition.

I like McCain, but I don't want him to win. Really, I don't. This is the most exciting election our country has had in a long time, and it's not exciting because of John McCain. It's just not. Four more years of the Bush policies would be a disaster for this country. Everything that is at the brink of falling, would just tip over for sure. McCain means well, but he doesn't have the skills to take this country to where we need to go.

His speeches put me to sleep, and he can't motivate me to go to the end of the block. And excitement, no...he's dull as a doorknob. Nice man, but dull, dull, dull. Our country needs to be motivated to get us out of this quagmire, and McCain is not the man to do it. He’s just not, let’s face it.

Listen carefully because John McCain has no ideas, and even on the mere chance that he did, he couldn't remember them from one campaign stop to the next. He flip-flops in the matter of 24 hours or just plain doesn't remember or believe what comes out of his mouth And what real reform can John McCain tout when he has voted with Bush 95% of the time? McCain, McBush, McSame. Anything he has stood for in the past he is now against including McCain-Feingold as exhibit A.

Sean   August 1st, 2008 2:24 pm ET

All McCain is capable of is criticizing Obama over and over and over again. I guess it's true that he himself has no new ideas. If he did, he might spend even an eighth of his time talking about them. And no, I'm not counting his ridiculous "gas tax holiday" idea, because it's just that....ridiculous. And I'm not counting his ideas about Czechoslovakia or the mythical Iraq/Pakistan border, either. Or the supposed benefits that the troop surge had in Iraq before it was even implemented.

Why are people falling for McCain's lies? Take one look at factcheck.org, and you'll see article after article debunking the deceit that McCain is spewing. Very few about Obama being off, but tons about McCain.

Mccain was a POW for 5 years and the Star of some 32 Vietcong Military films, signed anti- American statements...he gave them Military information after the 4th day in captivity, upon his return he left his injured wife ( who would never fit the mold of a first lady after her accident) to marry a women 18 years his JR. blond and attractive (picture of a first lady) after his tor id affair and betrayal of his first wife...oh yeah very rich, used her money to run for Senate, a lot of shady dealings, happens to have one of the highest absent records, ran unsuccessfully several times for POTUS, and now is at 72 running again in a campaign reeking of negativity, confused rhetoric, flip flops, a lot of old Bush campaign employees, and oh yes a whole lot of Big Washington LOBBYIST...5 years under the enemy, bought his way into Senate ( having NO prior political experience) failed attempts to power now BACKED BY THE CORRUPT WASHINGTON LOBBYIST AND EX BUSH CAMPAIGNERS...now all that being said, who sounds more Manchurian? can you really trust a "hero" who refuses to release his Military record...who in fact created Legislation to make sure no one can have access to it? would you trust a candidate who admits that He will "do and say anything to get elected" as he said yesterday? if you "trust" Mccain, well i have a really pretty bridge i can sell you.

When will he debate McCain????? Can't do that.... then he would have to think on his feet and face real questions from real people..... Who cares about this election? We all know that middle america and the rust belt is never going to vote for an african american. The media will never allow a president that doesn't fall in with the corporate bottom line since the large corporations own most media outlets.

We'll be stuck in republican wars for alteast another 4 years. We'll get our off shore drilling and our gas will continue to go up and our environment will still be in decline. McCain will get his $6,000 health care credit so our jobs won't offer health care any long and we'll be on our own (considering is costs $12,000 a year to insure a family of 3), but Wall Street will become stronger. So the media outlets will portray our economy to be in good shape.

Dems are stuck in the fix they rigged   August 1st, 2008 2:13 pm ET

Yeah...

What would the silent DNC and the anti-Hillary Media have said or done if the sexism were racism: pick my cotton, shine my shoes...?

They would have been all over it. Obama gave a speech about racism. Clinton never spoke out about the hate and bias shown her. She just kept going. That is why we love her.

But that does NOT make the Media and DNC sexism and disrespect towards Hillary and rapid defense of Obama RIGHT.

The DNC was wrong. The Media was wrong.

That bias against Hillary is now helping McCain- they can not now pull that crap against HIM without being challenged.

So now Obama the chosen, installed, selected candidate will fail due to the propaganda that propelled him to a false lead and a false sense of support.

It was NEVER there- the propaganda campaign for Obama created that myth of widespread support and the media played it up. IF OBAMA had that support the votes would have shown it. Even discounting Fl and Mi- Obama barely had a lead. Factor in the advantages that all the anti-Hillary bias gave his campaign- he did not have much support from the people at all.

As a citizen of the State of Louisiana, I beg John McCain to pick Bobby Jindal and that way we can get a Democrat in the Governor's mansion.

Bulldog   August 1st, 2008 2:10 pm ET

Why the hell does everyone think the Republicans are pushing hard for offshore drilling all of a sudden? Because the Bush term is almost over! They are getting desperate. Don't fall for their scams.

I watched the Senate debate on oil yesterday and the Democrats introduced at least 3 bills to try to help lower gas prices and the Republicans said no each time because their bill did not include offshore drilling.

So this is it. If the Republicans cannot have offshore drilling they will block each and every energy bill that will help bring down gas prices or help to create alternative energy sources. This is there strategy.

Don't fall for it. They are scam artists. How many times to they have to prove before people quit falling for these Rebublican lies. All they really care about is Big Oil and Big Corporations.

Isn't it funny that John McCain received $1 million dollars from Texas oilmen right after he changed his position on offshore drilling. Hmmmm. If that's not obvious I don't know what is.

Forget Katrina already???   August 1st, 2008 2:09 pm ET

Where are McCain's proposals? What are his positions? All we ever hear from him are slams against Obama. And all McCain has done lately is give speeches too – he hasn't been in the Senate since April. If he can't handle the campaign and his real job at the same time, how can he be an active leader? If he can't communicate his own proposals without misleading attacks on his opponent, why should we vote for him? He's right that Obama has been giving great speeches – filled with specific proposals and ideas about moving our country forward. Why is McCain incapable of doing the same?

Re-play the MSNBC coverage and CNN coverage and you will see the anti-Hillary and pro-Obama bias shown by all pundits every night.

Learn this: racism and sexism are BOTH bad.

The DNC and the Media quickly decried any comment as racism (even those that weren't) to advance Obama and ignored all the OBVIOUS sexist comments against Hillary- and actually piled on the sexism themselves.
