From

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) – When it comes to stagnating wages, Barack Obama and John McCain agree on one thing: Americans are suffering. And that's about all they agree on.

The presidential candidates have starkly different plans on how to reverse the years-long slide in workers' incomes. Democrat Obama's proposals of creating jobs through government investments are aimed at helping the middle class. Republican McCain focuses his plan on cutting taxes on businesses that he says will spur more jobs and keeping tax rates low so people have money in their pockets.

Wage stagnation has made the downturn in the nation's economy is even more painful, economists say. Skyrocketing fuel and food costs have hit workers hard because their incomes largely have not kept pace with inflation during this decade.

On Friday, unemployment hit a four-year high after employers trimmed 51,000 jobs, the Labor Department said. A day earlier, a separate government report showed that inflation-adjusted wages showed their biggest decline in the survey's eight-year history.

I find it funny that republicans call Obama’s tax policies “Socialism.” Maybe so. However, the tax cuts for the wealthy, aka Trickle-down-economics, is really no different. Call it what it is, Socialism for the Rich.

Lesley   August 1st, 2008 1:09 pm ET

What's with McCain? We've been doing the tax cuts for the wealthy and big corporations thing for 8 years now. His plan has been tried and it failed, it has reduced jobs, hello! Do people seriously think that more of the same will not produce more of the same? Put that together with "free" trade that has ties to immigration by requiring the US to allow a certain number of non-citizens into the country to work as part of the agreements. Why isn't anyone talking about the ties to immigration in some of these trade agreements that reduce work for Americans? That's a big contributing factor, it's not just outsourcing jobs. Our mission should be renegotiate to ensure fair trade to protect workers and take a new path using new ideas.

People are so stupid and uninformed these days... claiming Obama is a socialist??? Are you serious?? most of those people don't even know what a socialist is or are familiar with marxist theories.

Just because Obama wants to create government programs and more jobs, doesn't mean he's a socialist. LEARN FROM YOUR PAST PEOPLE!!! What does that make FDR? He created tons of government jobs and greatly benefited america by doing so! Are you calling FDR a socialist? give me a break.

Know your facts. Know your past.

Fact:

Everytime taxes go down revenue goes up... for those of you that don't understand... that means the gov gets more money. Higher taxes has the reverse effect because buisness lay people off to cover the new tax... they don't lose their bottom line... that's buisness.

Obama is a moron... and won't win anyway... polls are sliding... in a year when it should be a landslide the dems are going to blow it.

To bad Hillary is gone... she'd have a 20 point lead by now.

If I owed $10,000.00 to a credit card, and my payment is $1000.00 per month, but I am only able to pay $800.00 then I have a deficit of $200.00 Now lets say the credit card adds that deficit ($200.00) to the total amount owed, then every moth I would get further and further in debt..

Now think… the USA has a “”TEN TRILLION DOLLAR DEBT, AND A MEGA BILLION DEFICIT”” During the last fifty years the “R” in Republican stands for Recession, Nixon administration, Regan, Bush, all have ended in Recession and whopping debts and deficits.

Remember that in November..

I will support the candidate that is for the Fair Tax, giving the american people their money back and only pay taxes when we consume goods and has the government pay American citizens a monthly check (prebate check). It also forces everyone to to pay their share of taxes (i.e illegal immigrants, criminals,)

Just think of the economic stimulis if every working american suddenly receives their entire paychecks without the federal taxes, social security taxes, and medicare taxes. It will be an instant raise in everyones pay without business spending more money and will help with the rising fuel prices.

The REPUBLICANS have taken this country down into the gutter.

The BUSH/CHENEY Administration have clearly proven in the form of Karl Rowe that our government is operating like a bunch of "gangsters" who are above the law. They've made a mockery of our Constitution and have corrupted every level of decency and honor within the justice department!! This Administration has ABUSED it's powers and have manipulated the laws of the land to benefit their selfish greed and political ambitions. THIS ADMINISTRATION IS NOTHING BUT A DISGRACE TO THSI COUNTRY!!

If the average Joe Smith had done half of what Bush and his crooks have done he would have gotten the DEATH PENALTY!! This entire Administration has been nothing but a SHAM and SHOULD have been impeached a LONG TIME AGO. It's NO wonder what we are HATED around the world!!

John McCain himself has repeatedly supported this Administration and has proven that he will continue with this Administration's FAiLED policies. NOW we have Karl Rowe in front of a camera carrying on like he's the President himself!!! Unbelievable.

Oh and by the way the same people that complain about the government taxing them to much are the same people that complain that the government isn't doing enough. So you have Bridges that fall down and other Bridges that go to nowhere thanks to the GOP. If you want your government to pay for infirstructure than you have to pay for it and make sure that crooked people (GOP) don't build bridges to nowhere!!

I love how this. Every election, Republicans think that they can get Trickle Down to work. Every time, it fails and badly. The 1% get richer while the rest get poorer. I bust my butt everyday and still find it hard. So I would like a tax cut for once. I supposedly got one about 8 years ago but the fact that everything else has gone up greater to the cut, it does not equal out. It does not matter if the business get the tax cuts. If the poeple do not have the money to spend, the businesses are not going to get any business. They close up shop. How about that trickle down effect.

The Real Issue   August 1st, 2008 12:30 pm ET

The Real Issue is that McCain is going to provide money for the businesses and corporations. The business and corporations as the record has demonstrated cut costs, send jobs overseas, build plants internationally, hire a few workers, and do everything to keep the unions out. The money provided by the Republican administration has not helped businesses to spur jobs and the Bush Administration has had 7 years. We now have 51,000+ jobs lost during the month of July, 2008 which has a domino affect on: tax monies to pay for unemployment, non-purchases of products and real estate that affects other businesses, less spending and savings, etc.

Kurt C.   August 1st, 2008 12:29 pm ET

Obama's plan – Tax everything that moves. That will help the economy.

McCain's plan – let the people who earn money keep more of the money they earned.

I know who I'm voting for.

McCain does have a point- cutting taxes and increasing profits on business should allow them to create more jobs thru expansion. The problem is that many of those businesses have relocated to other countries, and the increases will go there at the expense of the U.S.! Allowing drilling leases offshore won't do much to alleviate the oil problem, as the oil companies will sit on the leases for years until they can make even greater profits. If they were serious about easing the problem, they would be drilling on the milions of acres they already have leases on-but they are waiting for the price to go even higher.

Diane   August 1st, 2008 12:24 pm ET

We have several problems: 1) spending more than we earn, with a negative savings rate, and that starts with the federal government. My checkbook needs to balance, so does the government, and we need to get out of debt and stay there or the rest of the world will own us. 2) too many tax loopholes and the extremely wealthy often pay proportionately less in taxes. I'm in the 38% bracket and pay a lot of taxes–but if money was going for rebuilding our country instead of other countries who hate us anyway I might favor a flat tax rate to get out of debt and fund ourselves for a change. 3) invest in alternate energy sources now with tax credits or whatever it takes–we put solar power in our home and actually get a check each month for the power we produce. Start working on biofuels, wind, solar, etc, 4) stop our over consumption of non-essential toys and reckless mortgages and start saving for our future or we won't have much–and I don't think it's the government's responsibility to do that.

Bayou Joe   August 1st, 2008 12:21 pm ET

You Demos don't get it. Without profits no business can afford to pay their employees, decent wages, medical benefits, and pensions. Without profitable businesses, there will be no outlets to buy gas,
groceries or anything else.

You are the Government and those tax dollars from Washington don't come from thin air. They come mostly from American Business and
high income tax payers. The bulk of it comes from Middle income
taxpayers like me and you. Think twice before you elect a Tax and Spend President (Obama). If you want more taxes and less Freedom
then vote for Obama, but don't say you were not informed.

I'm beginning to think our founders had it right when they said the only people who could vote were land owners, because they reasoned if you're going to be the people paying for the government, you should be the only people who have a say on how who is elected to it.

I find it amazing that what generations of attempts from Soviets and other socialists failed to do, stealth American socialists in our our country managed to pull off: souring the American Spirit and getting us to believe that government can solve all ills.

Our founders are spinning in their graves. Heaven help this great Republic.

The Economy only works from the bottom up, If people don't buy the goods being sold then Big Companies can make all the goods they want but if people can't afford them then the Big Companies can't sell sheet!! Americans are idiots or a vast majority are anyway.......

VahMonter   August 1st, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Let me get this right. The Republicans have controlled the White House and our economic policies for 28 of the past 40 years and they're asking us to believe they are better for America. During the Clinton years we reformed the welfare system, had a balanced budget, were not spending billions of dollars on a war, attempted to work on health care, and had reasonably affordable energy costs.

MikeH   August 1st, 2008 12:03 pm ET

Let's see, the economy is spiraling into the worst econmic crisis since the Depression, and this article lists a very few hand-picked conservative economists who essetially say `stay the course' against `liberal' economists who argue otherwise, and tries to give the opinion that it's a balance argument.

Why don't you list the opinion of the top 50 or 100 economists, without listing their affiliation and see what the consensus is?

Tami, you should not hang out with Alex Mooney, he will only ruin your objectivity.

John, Catholic   August 1st, 2008 12:03 pm ET

You people need to read more.

(Paraphrased) Adam Smith on the Wealth of Nations, Book 5, Chapter 2:

"The most fundamental requirement of any economy is infrastracture. By means of establishing infrastructure one may not only employee the citizenry, but one also improves the economic efficency of the state. As such infrastructure is an investment that not only pays the people for the work they do but benefits the state by facilitating economic growth."

Obama's plan is to get the people to build infrastructure. Which has not been touched since the time of the New Deal about fifty years ago. That will facilitate private industry thus creating new jobs immediately and in the long run.

Honestly people books will not bite you. Reading will give you an informed opinion rather than just spouting off at the mouth without any understanding of the big picture. But I suppose that is why many are McCain supporters to begin with. If you could see the big picture you would know better. But you are to busy get stuck on stupidity.

No, because the money currently being spent on the war is money we can't actually afford to spend. If (and I say if) Obama ends the war in Iraq, it's not like there's suddenly going to be all this money that he can play with.

PLS THINK   August 1st, 2008 11:50 am ET

I invite all of you to think about the real things !

when a business owner can afford many mansions, and condos, many cars, and private jets, etc....IN GENERAL, That PROOVE that the business is fine, employees and materials are paid...and the owner is spending his BENEFITS !

Cutting taxes for these people has nothing to do with them giving more jobs...it allows them to buy a new private JET ! For someone like Cindy McCain 200 000 $ DOES NOT CHANGE MUCH IN HER LIFE QUALITY....maybe it will keep her from buying a knew luxury gadget.

At the same time, that money can keep many others from bankrupcy.

THEREFORE : Stop saying that cutting taxe for the wealthy help them give more job. IT IS JUST NOT TRUE ! Business owner will always try to have have more work done by for less money ( and in general that means less people)...They wont start giving job to everyone just because they have tax cuts...the proof is that they'd rather all move to india or china, where cheap labor helps them make more profit.

That money goes right in their pockets while others cant make ends meet.

Capitalism is capitalism...we beleive in free market and all...but please people...dont let them fool you.

Progressive Progressives for Progress in Progressive Progression   August 1st, 2008 11:48 am ET

Folks, for everyone who hates "big business" and the notion of making a profit, I have to ask, what DO you like? How much FREE work do you do? I do NONE because it's not in my interest to do so... much like how businesses exist to earn a profit.

I like to work. I like to make money. The government isn't going to give it to me, so I have to earn it. When eeeeeeevil Big Business fails, PEOPLE fail. Their supplier business fail, all of those employees fail, in turn. When Big Business fails, their employees fail, their homes fail, their ability to spend and contribute to our economy and support small businesses fails too. When those smaller business fail, all of their suppliers fail too, as does those employees too.

Wake up folks, even in what you decry as an eeeeeevil "every man for himself" system, you and I all have a better chance at a better life, than if we slid into the dark bowels of socialism. Believe me, if socialism were so great, I have to ask why the majority of Soviet Block countries have discarded it in favor of free market capitalism and why the Chinese are quickly becoming some of the most devout Capitalists on the planet? Because it simply produces better lives.

Wise up. The government can not control the economy without first controlling the people. Capitalism, for all it's woes and for all the losers it produces, creates far more winners and raises far more boats than does government handouts. Government hand outs control the people. The only thing socialism spreads equally among the people is MISERY.

Susan from Scotts Valley, CA   August 1st, 2008 11:47 am ET

Yes, McCain has more experience but what he is proposing – cutting corporate taxes and keeping taxes low on the richest of Americans to solve the problem – hasn't worked. The rich just keep getting richer while the rest of America is plunging quickly into the worst economic crisis of the last 60 years. And there's no guarantee that cutting corporate taxes when these same companies are shipping their jobs overseas will do anything to spur job growth in the U. S.

Obama's plan to invest in rebuilding our infrastructure AND investing in alternative energy development will not only guarantee jobs in the U. S. but these are things we ABSOLUTELY need to do anyway. So we accomplish many critical things at the same time.

And the idea that people that are making more than $250,000 will pay more taxes to pay for some of this...is not going to hurt MOST Americans.

It's truly a win, win.

Kate   August 1st, 2008 11:46 am ET

If we don't do something with this stupid free trade and make it more balanced for us and then we HAVE to be oil independent Something has to be done either with or to the oil companies to make them realize that our security and that of the free world is at stake. If they refuse to start drilling and marketing then pull all there leases and let them start over. And most of all we have to get out from under this stupid thinking that the radical ecology people and Pelosi and Obama and to many control freaks have. They will sell out the American people for their power plays. So it will take some time to get oil to us. Well they are lying about how long and they don't seem to understand we have to start someplace. None of us are going to live long enough to see their long term ideas materialize. McCain starts his every speech with "Senator Obama..." . And the easiest way to scare people is to say: "He will raise your taxes". At the same time he is promising to balance federal budget in 4 years. But according to the recent article in Fortune (6/28) McCain plan will ADD TO NATIONAL DEBT 4.5 TRILLION DOLLARS. Obama with all his proposed social programs will add "only" 3.3 trillion.
The same day other article in Fortune quotes McCain's chief economic policy adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin: "I used to say that Barack Obama raises taxes and John McCain cuts them, and I weas convinced. I STAND CORRECTED".
Another example regarding income. US average income in BOTTOM quintile: late 80's – $16,303; late 90's – $18,575; mid 2000s – $18.116.
TOP 5 PERCENT: late 80's – 138,093; late 90's – $191,658; mid 2000s – $220,700. (:Disparity Rising" by Emily Kaiser, Chicago magazine, July 2008)

The CEO is not hurting, the people in upper management are not hurting. There are plenty of job openings in India but in America there is a job freeze. And on top of that, I haven't had a pay increase in the last 4 years even though my annual appraisals have been excellent. If you leave it up to companies; which is McBush’s plan, who is to say that these companies are not going to rip us off? A business has to make money and a business does provide jobs but at what point do tax cuts to wealthy businesses and corporations just mean obscene profits. John McCain just got a huge monetary donation from big oil after he changed positions on drilling for oil off shore. That just support for another Bush plan.

It is rather startling to see John McCain within 40% of Obama in the polls with the issues so clear and positions so far apart. Do that many Americans supporting McCain really want to self destruct?

People think. TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMICS DOES NOT WORK. It has never worked. It didn't work for Ronald Reagan, George Bush the first, George W, and it won't work for John McCain.

For those of you unfamiliar with what exactly trickle down economics is, here is a quick lesson. It was first coined by Reagan. His thought was if you cut taxes to the rich and powerful, and to corporate America then more money would be coming in to the top tier of individuals. Those individuals would turn around and share the wealth with those below...hence Trickle Down.

The problem is with that theory, the rich and powerful and corporate America don't share. That's that sad truth. It's more for me me me to keep in my own pocket. Why would I want to share my money. This is why we are in the sad state that we are in right now. This will not change with McCain.

Veteran for McCain   August 1st, 2008 11:11 am ET

So for those making over 250k (I'm not one of them) do they get any added benefit for paying more taxes? Or are they just supposed to feel good about it since they are helping others with their unemployment benefits?
I say you keep the tax cuts in place. You put a limit on unemployment benefits and you force people to go out and get a job. Just because you start a job and your making minimum wage doesn't mean your always going to be at that level. You can work hard and move your way up the chain. People in the country feel too entitled and are ashamed of not making huge amounts of money. Get over it! Do the work and the money will come!

For those who "wonder why anyone can support McCain," here's the reason(s). McCain did not just appear like magic on the scene one day. We've been able to watch him and his actions for the past 20 years. Yes, he's made some unpopular choices, but the main thing, he was actively working when he MADE them. And the majority of the time, he has been a bipartisan senator, working on both sides of the senate. He has often split with his own party for us, and publicly rebuked President Bush for the direction Iraq was taking, finally succeeding in getting Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld fired! This man will fix our economy and put people to work; he will fix the energy crisis, and his worldwide popularity will work for America's return to the number one position it previously enjoyed. By contrast, Obama is going to give us everything. Where on earth does he plan to get the money for all these promises when our national debt is now in the trillions. And to date, his ONLY economic policy centers around how his picture is going to look on the one and five dollar bills!!! As a life-time Democrat, now an Independent, I say it's time to wise up America.

Hi neighbor, while I respect your point of view, I would like to know what makes you think that "The only people who will benefit from cutting taxes on businesses are the business owners themselves". I am A business owner and let me tell you the only way I see any extra money is if we see a high rate of sales. Most of the time that money is not taken by the owner it is used for new machines or to advertise or open a new division to create new jobs and grow your company. The first rule off business is grow and grow as big as you can. If you force a company to spend $3 per hour per person more fore the same job then you can expect to see allot of businesses fail.It will all start with advertising companies as advertising is the first thing people stop spending on when short on cash.

McCain supporters must have awoken from a deep 8-year long coma or something, because nothing of what they say has any bearing on reality. Even if they woke up 8 years ago, they would still be able to see how great Clinton ran the economy and could see Clinton's and Obama's tax policies lining up exactly, so that can't be it. What is the matter with you people? Do you want to CONTINUE the debt building of Bush? Do you want to CONTINUE to allow the wage disparity Bush eagerly helped along? You're all traitors.

GM Posts $15.5 Billion Loss

Breaking Own Record, Exxon Sets Highest U.S. Profit Ever:
Second-Quarter Earnings Total $11.68 Billion

--------------------------------

You (American consumer) are buying a lot of gas/oil. You (American consumer) are not buying GM cars.

That's the simple answer. Exxon/Mobil is a net importer. Meaning they purchase more oil than they drill. This cuts their gross margin to under 10%. They also buy back a lot of stock, which keeps the number low, but really they have high costs. Not a good business to get into. The fact that the oil industry has consolidated into a few corporations has spread the large market over a few businesses, thus high profits for each.

GM is a poorly run company. But, they have also had a lot of costs incurred during this quarter from buyouts and plant closures. Going against my man Nader, this is partly to blame on Unions. Non-union auto manufacturers have consistently made money. Add in a weak dollar, higher prices across the board in America and a fleet that doesn't sell when gas is >$3.50 and you get a loss.

Hope that helps.

California Gold   August 1st, 2008 10:57 am ET

McCain admitted he doesn't understand finance, thus his approach to fixing the economy amounts to putting more money in the pockets of big businesses, make more tax cuts for large businesses, provide more opportunity to Exxon (record profits reported) and other oil companies and that's somehow or another that's going to put money in my pocket. Unbelievable.

Obama's proposal is to raise taxes for what he calls the rich. Alot of these are probably buisness owners so if they get a huge tax hike and have to fold up because they can't afford paying big business or personal taxes how is this creating new jobs. McCain's idea is right anyone that owns a business knows payroll and workmans comp are through the roof paying out, so by helping the business owner new jobs can be created.

Rudy NYC   August 1st, 2008 10:55 am ET

How can 'trickle-down" economics possibly succeed when the jobs that it is supposed to create are allowed to be shipped overseas?

How can the economy grow with all of the deficit spending? Reagan ran up the largest US debt in history at the time. Bush has actually outdone Reagan by at least 10-fold.

It is time for "bottom-up" economics while there is still some bottom left.

Terri in Fl   August 1st, 2008 10:55 am ET

Businesses need to make money. Period. That's why there is so much outsourcing going on. Wages are MUCH lower in China and India, so businesses make more money!

Attempting to tell us that conditionless tax breaks for businesses will create jobs is nonsense. If the business gets a tax break, they'll just make even more money and continue to take jobs overseas. Period!

1. I believe any additional tax breaks for businesses should only go to those who are keeping the jobs at home.

2. I also believe that if we invest in our infrastructure, it would be difficult for that to get outsourced and businesses would need to keep the jobs at home!

That's why McCain's plan is hooey and I believe Obama's plan could work.

There isn't a single economist or person who survived the 80s that thinks that Reaganomics/Trickle down economics works. It has proven to fail. I learned how and why trickle down econmics doesn't work in ECON 101.
This is crazy. I have said it before and I will say it again, The GOP is for big business because that is who funds their campaign. They are for the religious right, not because of their high moral standards, but because that is who funds their campaigns. The only people who will benefit from cutting taxes on businesses are the business owners themselves. Do we really expect to see a trickle down effect? Successful businesses have already pared the fat out of their operations and are running those businesses at efficient levels. Tax cuts for them won't make them go out and hire new people and add to their overhead.

-------------------------------–

You're wrong. The point of a business is to make money. To make money, you need to grow your business. To grow your business you have to take on extra costs (incl. labor, most of the time). You can't take on extra costs if you are taxed heavily.

I don't understand the incorrect and well-adopted theory that businesses hate their workers. Most small business owners want to do everything possible to make life better for everyone involved in their business. That's one of the joys of owning a small business, and it's a win-win situation. Corporations, maybe not as much, but the majority do.

Mandating a high minimum wage and keeping taxes at 35% will harm the economy, which futhers the hatred Americans have with the business world. Giving people tax credits is nothing but a ploy to make you think the Democrats care. It all adds up to having less jobs (with a lower average wage) and high consumer prices. You just have $500 bucks from the governement to help you out. Funny thing is, it was you're money all along.

Less taxes = more money in the economy = growth = jobs = good wages.

VB Lincoln Park NJ   August 1st, 2008 10:45 am ET

The recently released unemployment numbers are just one more indication of the failed policies of the Bush administration. No question that he will go down in history as one of the worst if not the worst President in hstory.

Eric   August 1st, 2008 10:44 am ET

Here's McCain' plan. Keep on doing exactly what was done in the last seven years and try to sell the idea that the results will be different. People have to understand that US economy grew in the last 7 seven years. You did not notice it because the wages did not increase while food, fuel, tuitions became more expansive (Exxon is doing well though). And McCain wants to apply the same medicine that made the economy sick. It's amazing to think a lot of people will go for that. But they will. You can't help them, they think Obama is a "socialist". Is there any hope left for this country?

Why would anyone want to elect McCain? He is the candidate emphazing his 30 years in Washington and is a member of the GOP which controlled the White House for the last eight years and the Congress for six of the last eight years that has caused all of the economic problems of today. McCain, personally, along with his thirty years of so-called "Washington experience" is definitely part of the problem. He clearly lacks the intelligence, vision, character and most importantly the judgement to turn the situation around. McCain can solve problems; he is part of the cause of the problems. Obama is clearly visionary leader to take on the GOP mess. McCain is the old senile, relic of the failed politics of the past. McCain is a loser!

Come on McCain. If you cut taxes for businesses, they are not going to add jobs. They are simply going to give raises to upper management and continue to send jobs overseas. It is obvious you don't know anything about job creation or the economy. Obama's plan, on the other hand, is to invest in infrastucture here at home; jobs that can not be outsourced. American people employed put money into the U.S. economy. People in India may draw money in for the corporation they work for, but they spend in their own economy. paulie_nj   August 1st, 2008 10:23 am ET

Obama's answer to everything is to just give a tax credit or fund [it] with a government program. This type of thinking just puts the government into further debt and, in the long run, that debt will need to be offset by higher taxes in other areas. Don't be fooled. For those of you who are still undecided about who to vote for you must read "The Obama Nation"; it's a real eye opener and will make you think twice before voting for Obama in November.

No matter which candidate is elected, taxes will have to be increased. How else can we possibly get ourselves out of the incredible deficit hole we've dug?

It's funny to watch McCain play pingpong with himself on taxes...

No new taxes
Nothing's off the table
No I won't raise taxes
We may have to negotiate on tax increases

It would be funny if it weren't so darned scary!

It`s because one knows what he is talking about (with experience )and the other does not.

If you want a better paying job, move out of the US. Go to India, Hong Kong, UAE anywhere but North America.

If you want a low paying job, then stay right here in the US of A.

@wolfblitzercnn: Redskins-Giants always exciting. Both teams have a lot to prove. And Giants can still salvage playoffs. Skins just need a win.
