Obama calls for giving 'full vote' to Michigan, Florida delegates

Sen. Barack Obama said Sunday that Michigan and Florida delegates should get a full vote.
Sen. Barack Obama said Sunday that Michigan and Florida delegates should get a full vote.

(CNN) - Sen. Barack Obama said Sunday that the delegates from Florida and Michigan should get a “full vote” at the Democratic convention this month.

“I believe party unity calls for the delegates from Florida and Michigan to be able to participate fully alongside the delegates from the other states and territories,” he said in a letter to the co-chairs of the Democratic National Convention’s Credentials Committee.

Obama asked the committee to pass a resolution when it meets on August 24 to give each delegate a full vote.

Florida and Michigan were stripped of their delegates as a penalty for holding their primaries too early. During the primary season, there were growing calls to seat the delegations as Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton were locked in a tight race for their party’s nomination. Obama and Clinton were about 100 delegates apart in March, and Florida and Michigan's cache of 366 delegates had the potential to shake up the race.

The battle over the states’ delegates became a key issue on the campaign trail. Clinton had long advocated for seating both states’ delegations. She won both primaries, but the Democratic candidates had agreed to not campaign in the two states and she was the only top-tier candidate on the ballot in Michigan.

Clinton’s message that “every vote should count” became a key theme in her stump speeches. She accused Obama of being "un-American" for not backing plans to hold a revote in the two states.

The Illinois senator denied claims that he was standing in the way of revotes.

"I want the Michigan delegation and the Florida delegation to be seated. And however the Democratic National Committee determines we can get that done, I'm happy to abide by those rules," he told CNN in March.

After months of wrangling over what to do, the DNC’s rules and bylaws committee voted in late May to reinstate all of Florida and Michigan's delegates, with each getting a half-vote.

Wow, a lot of bitter and uninformed comments here.

You guys need to remember that Obama would have won with nomination EVEN WITH the delegates from MI and FL being seated in full. He was still ahead in the delegate count. Hillary is the one who tried to change the rules when it suited her- she agreed to the punishments for MI and FL until she realized she needed them.

If you don't like Obama, that's fine. But he's taken the high road in this campaign; stop pretending otherwise. Hillary lost fair and square, and it's time to get over it.

People, please, the revote proposition was ridiculous. Voting costs a lot of money for the state, and who was going to pay the millions of dollars to hold a revote in both of those states? And you people think it's so horrible that Obama was against this idea. He was against it because it was a childish proposition that would have wasted huge amounts of time and money.

He WAS, however, completely open to a compromise regarding seating the delegates, but Hillary and her greedy team wanted nothing short of seating them all exactly as they voted, basically letting them get off completely free, just because she won those states. Does anyone truly believe Hillary would have felt so strongly about "counting every vote" if the tables were turned? If you're thinking the answer to that question is yes, remember this: this is the candidate who wanted to disenfranchise millions of American voters by coaxing superdelegates to overthrow the popular vote so that she could get elected.

He sure is the Change candidate. Is there any issue he hasn't refined yet? Not to worry, there are still 3 full months left for him to do that. What a charlatan.

As a loyal Obama supporter, I am really dissapointed that Obama has changed his views on this. It's downright hypocritical. I've come to expect stuff like this from Hillary and McCain, but I really thought Obama was above politics like this. I understand that he did this in the name of "party unity", but I think it will only come back to hurt him.

com'on obama, first a reversal on off-shore oil drilling, now you want FL and MI delegates to be seated full? where has his moral high ground gone to? he's every bit a politician who moves where the wind blows as anyone else. what a shame! we need hillary.

  13. Former Democrat

So, now we really should seat the MI and FL voters? Absolutely disgusting. And still the Obama-drones will say that this man has integrity. Hahahah. I thought I wanted to leave the country when Bush won twice – that's nothing compared to this time around. "Change we can believe in?" More like Change We Can Deceive With. "No offshore drilling?" No wait, only some offshore drilling. Is there anything he hasn't flip-flopped on? Where's a Swift Boat when you really need one? Lifelong democrat voting for McCain because I'd rather have the enemy I can predict.

    LOL Hahaha.

And Hillary wanted every vote to count? Didn't she say caucuses shouldn't count? Didn't she say red states weren't part of the true electorate? Didn't she say the nomination would be over after Super Tuesday? Didn't her campaign throw the kitchen sink while crying sexism is rampant? Didn't her campaign say she was inevitable? Isn't she now thinking, "I wish I was the democratic nominee and speaking to 200,000+ audiences in Berlin and accepting my nomination in front of a 75,000 seating stadium in Denver." Hillary and McCain need to stop whining and get behind BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA!

    OBAMA 08
    YES WE CAN.

Hillary supporters and PUMA's pay off her debt. McCain, try to manage a campaign that talks about the issues instead of putting out smears against Obama. Remember, it didn't work for Hillary. One last thing...How did Obama get SELECTED when he WON THE POPULAR VOTE AND THE DELEGATES AND THE SUPERDELEGATES?

i say let that happen, then lets hope Senator Clinton submits her name for a vote by the delegates. If they would have been granted a full vote based on the primary results in the spring, Hillary would have been the nominee.

This just showed how much of a farce the Democrat party really is. They make rules, agree to them and then change the rules. What they did was the most un-Democratic philosophy I've ever seen. And you want these people running our country? No Way!

  17. Hillary Got screwed

To Obvious Choice......What in the name of heaven are you talking about?? Hillary didn't play by the rules? You Obaba supporters are way out there man. Now the entire country is beginning to catch on to obama and the smoke and mirror games. He flip-flops more than a flounder. If the super delegates didn't hand you the nomination, you wouldn't be where you are. I have never seen a group of suppoters for a candidate who are so AROGANT as you Obama supporters. Go ahead and try and win, you won't get half of the Democrats and none of the Independents or Liberl Republicans in New England. Enjoy !!

  21. Another grumpy old white woman for Obama

Barack Obama didn't do it. Your state politicians who decided the rules didn't apply to them did it. Hillary did it. With her knowingly telling people to vote even though it wouldn't count and leaving her name on the ballot. You people are amazing! You will vote against your best interest to make a point. You will willlingly throw your country under the bus for your little vendetta? Read something besides Fashion Magazines and see the world as it is. It does not revolve around you and your groupie mentality. There are important real life ISSUES at stake. A vote for McCain is a vote for 4 more years of Anarchy, war and greed. Womens rights will be damaged beyond repair. We will be ridiculed and hated by the rest of the world because of our stupidy in electing another Warmongering moron as president. We are not voting for Prom Queen or King. We are voting for survival. It is not a game. Obama is right. It is too important to let grudges get in the way of your values. If you even have any.

Obama simply has changed his mind (change you can believe in). Just as he did on receiving public campaign financing (boy, he IS the candidate of change all right) and a number of other things.

More change you can believe in: public campaign financing, offshore drilling, counting all the votes, debating (now it's only going to be the mandatory three)... the list grows every week. Change you can believe in! Yes he can!
