Obama calls for giving 'full vote' to Michigan, Florida delegates

Sen. Barack Obama said Sunday that Michigan and Florida delegates should get a full vote.
Sen. Barack Obama said Sunday that Michigan and Florida delegates should get a full vote.

(CNN) - Sen. Barack Obama said Sunday that the delegates from Florida and Michigan should get a “full vote” at the Democratic convention this month.

“I believe party unity calls for the delegates from Florida and Michigan to be able to participate fully alongside the delegates from the other states and territories,” he said in a letter to the co-chairs of the Democratic National Convention’s Credentials Committee.

Obama asked the committee to pass a resolution when it meets on August 24 to give each delegate a full vote.

Florida and Michigan were stripped of their delegates as a penalty for holding their primaries too early. During the primary season, there were growing calls to seat the delegations as Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton were locked in a tight race for their party’s nomination. Obama and Clinton were about 100 delegates apart in March, and Florida and Michigan's cache of 366 delegates had the potential to shake up the race.

The battle over the states’ delegates became a key issue on the campaign trail. Clinton had long advocated for seating both states’ delegations. She won both primaries, but the Democratic candidates had agreed to not campaign in the two states and she was the only top-tier candidate on the ballot in Michigan.

Clinton’s message that “every vote should count” became a key theme in her stump speeches. She accused Obama of being "un-American" for not backing plans to hold a revote in the two states.

The Illinois senator denied claims that he was standing in the way of revotes.

"I want the Michigan delegation and the Florida delegation to be seated. And however the Democratic National Committee determines we can get that done, I'm happy to abide by those rules," he told CNN in March.

After months of wrangling over what to do, the DNC’s rules and bylaws committee voted in late May to reinstate all of Florida and Michigan's delegates, with each getting a half-vote.

Will CNN be brave (and fair) enough to post this????

HILLARY AND BARACK DIDNT BREAK THE RULES.
THE PARTY DID. AND THEY DID IT ON PURPOSE.

TWO STATES JUST DONT DECIDE TO PENCIL IN THE WRONG DAY FOR THE PRIMARY. IT WASNT A MISTAKE.

THIS IS HUGE. HOW MANY PEOPLE THAT DAY DECIDED NOT TO VOTE BECAUSE THEY KNEW THEIR VOTES WOULD NOT BE COUNTED?
BUT OBAMA FAITHFULS SAY... HE FOLLOWED THE RULES? NOW, WHY WOULD OBAMA FOLLOW THE RULES IN MI, BUT NOT FLA? HE IS NOT OFF THE HOOK FOR FOLLOWING THE RULES, BECAUSE HE DIDNT IN FLORIDA.

YOU DONT MESS WITH THE VOTING PROCESS!!!

THE DISCONTENT AND ANGER PEOPLE FEEL IS TOTALLY LEGIT, AND IT COULD BE A LONG TIME BEFORE THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY RECOVERS FROM THIS SHAMEFUL DEBACLE.
AND THEY DESERVE EVERY BIT OF THE HEAT THEY ARE GETTING FOR IT!!!!!

KEEP CORRUPTION OUT OF THE PARTY!

Outrageous! This "offer" after all this time? he knows the party is divided due to the horrendous treatment of Hillary. The Convention has not been held and until the SDs vote at the convention there is no confirmed winner. The SDs can change their vote anytime. On the playground we call it bullying if you try to force another player out before the end of the game. What a sham, the DNC has sold out America! Talk about being given the nomination, SHAME, SHAME, SHAME on the DNC. Barack does not deserve all the uncommitted votes from MI period! There can be no doubt that Hillary was railroaded. Try to salvage what you can Sen Obama but we the people remember and we do not forget!

This proves again that Obama is a dirty politician. Obama, you think we are stupid or what? You are a fool if you think you can fool us!!! You were the one who blocked the votes in Michigan and Florida and stole the nomination!!! Now Hillary has asked not to be nominated, then you ask for full votes in both of these states so that you can be fully benefited and get the votes from the people in Michigan and Florida?

I tell you the truth, you are doomed to be punished in November. Not only you will lose Michigan and Florida because people in both states have seen your real color and will not vote for you, but also you will lose the whole election. I am not a big fan of John Mccain or Repblican Party, but this year, the democratic party has to lose because of its own stupidity to choose a crooked politican Obama!!!

Oh, please! Now Obama cares about party unity AFTER he got the nomination in large part to the fact that FL and MI (states that Hillary won big in but got no 'momentum' from the press for) had their delegates stripped. NOW he wants the MI and FL delegates to have full votes? I'm a lifelong Democrat. I've voted for every Democratic presidential candidate since McGovern. And I'm almost sure I'm going to vote for McCain this year. Or Nader. And I live in one of the so-called important swing states. Why? Because Obama is so blatantly "flip flopping" and pandering on so many important issues (e.g. gun control, domestic drilling, the surge in Iraq, his affiliation with Rev. Wright, now this new one on the delegates) that I just can't stomach the guy anymore. I never thought I would dislike a Democratic candidate so much (and I am NOT racist, OK???). He's just SO egotistical and narcissistic. Like he's god's gift to the world (with his sweeping speeches and his 3 years of total government experience). Anyone that can't see that really is in denial. And he doesn't even have the respect for the 18 million people who voted for Clinton to even consider her as his running mate. I sincerely hope he chooses a white guy like Kaine from VA, McCain selects a female running mate, and Obama loses the election.

Boy didn't we see this coming? Another shift in positions...again made for pure political and pr reasons. Do you remember what this twofaced pol said during the primary? Of course now that he has the nomination sown up(with the help of the media and the party hacks) for party "unity" he wants the delegations to have full voting rights? What a shamless ploy. This candidate is willing to say anything,do anything or switch anything to win. It used to be just sad and pathetic....now it is becoming almost biblical proportion scary. Beware the shyster.

It's a simple issue. Per the _DNC_, not Obama, the Florida/Michigan races were null and void due to the states decision to move up their primaries and their exact results could not be used for determining who won the primaries. That's why Obama repeatedly said he would abide by the DNC ruling. Since the outcome of the votes in these states relied heavily on name-recognition and the candidates were not allowed to campaign there, Hillary Clinton was by default the winner in these states. As a matter of fact, in practically EVERY state, if candidates were not allowed to campaign, by default Hillary Clinton would have been the winner by name-recognition alone – which is why the media labelled her inevitable last year. So to have a FAIR democratic primary race, candidates have to have face-time with the voters and that simply didn't happen in FL and MI. This is a common issue in many third-world nations where dictators allow multiple parties but restrict the opposition candidates from campaigning- the results 100% of the time default to the one with the bigger namer recognition – the dictator. So it would have been improper to use the FL and MI results as counted. Now that the DNC decided their remedy for FL and MI, and we have a nominee-elect, the half-vote penalty doesn't make a whole lot of sense at this point. Hence he's asking for these states to get full voice at the convention.

To all of the above. Maybe you ought to read the article. HE TOLD CNN IN MARCH THAT HE WANTED THE MICHIGAN AND FLORIDA DELECATES TO BE SEATED. HOWEVER THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE CAN GET THAT DONE was his statement. He would abide by those rules. That was in March.....doesn't May come after March?
You're all so eager to jump on this man. Get your dang facts straight before you start spouting off.

What is it about the "new" Americans that think you do not ever have to play by the rules.

When the DNC stripped Michaigan and Florida of their delegates, Senator Clinton was the odds on favorite for the nomination so it was no big deal to her or her supporters. When the DNC allowed them to have 1/2 of vote, the majority of those who made the decision were declared Clinton supporters.

Besides learning how to work hard again, maybe Americans need to learn again what it is to play by the rules.

If the delegates from Florida and Michigan have the morals that I hope they have, they should refuse a whole vote and accept their punishment. That would show the rest of the country the type of honorable people that come from those to great states.

As a voter in MI, I am continually amazed how Hillary supporters, from outside this state, play this silly game. Again, for those who can't see beyond their agendas, we where shafted by our DEMOCRATIC GOVENOR, DEMOCRATIC SENATORS AND DEMOCRATIC LEGISLATORS. Obama had noting to do with our primary or the DNC's response. Even Hillary said, before she needed our votes, that the penalty was fair and appropriate. Hillary became the champion of the "disenfranchised" only after her campaign imploded. We are adults, we accept the fact that life does not turn out the way we hoped it would, but, to blame Obama is silly. We don't need anyone from outside this state to tell us that we were misused, we know who did it -our Michigan Democratic party.

Well just in case you didn't know. When McCain said that he didn't bring race into this election and the remarks about the 5 dollar bill, well back in June McCain camp did just so. Here a link to McCain ad ref. Sen.Obama face on the 100 dollar bill. Thank you for your time. Someone need to report this. Because I think the media isn't doing the Americans people justice when they just let McCain say and do as he please...

People just want something to be mad about, angry about, blame Obama for, or accuse Obama of, just to simply justify in their minds as to why they won't vote for the man. That's fine. DON'T VOTE FOR HIM. The funny thing is, he's still going to win. Just think about this, for every person that says they aren't going to vote for Obama, there are 10 people that will. So add it up, and see who comes out on top. You may ask, well how did you come to that conclusion on the math. Glad you ask. Simple math tells me more people like and trust Obama then those who don't. So go ahead with your threats of not voting. At this point, WHO CARES.

Not an Obama fan. Just when I was beginning to change my mind about Mr. Obama he does this. Of course he would ask for full voting rights for Michigan and Florida when it only benefits him. What a hypocrite, typical politician.

The Obvious Choice–Senator Clinton did in fact follow the rules. YOU should check the facts. Nothing in the rules stated that they had to take their names off the ballot. In fact it was not an easy thing for them to do. The rules stated that they could not campaign in those states. Senator Clinton did not campaign in those states but guess what Senator Obama DID. He ran an ad in Florida against the rules. Of course no one wants to talk about that. TYPICAL POLITICIAN.

Well, I don't know whether to applaud Obama for his open-mindedness or blame him for being a flip-flop a la Kerry. But it is hard to ignore his sudden and strange change in position on Iraq, then off-shore drilling, and now counting of FL and MI votes. He is somehow not convincing me enough to vote for him this November. I used to like him a lot better during the Democratic primaries...I even held long discussions with my friends and family members to convince them to vote for this guy during the CA primary. Now, I am not too sure. While I'm glad he is not stubborn just for the sake of it, his shift in policy vis a vis off-shore drilling and counting FL and MI votes, and not having a convincing and sound rationale for doing so is driving me up a tree. What's the matter with Obama? He seemed to be the one!! Now I'm all frustrated and flummoxed. I'm beginning to feel neither Obama nor McCain is ready to lead this great country of ours...
