Pelosi offers Veep support for House darkhorse

Nancy Pelosi had lots of praise for Rep. Chet Edwards of Texas.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Plenty of high profile names are getting bounced around as Barack Obama’s potential running mate. But Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi may have a lesser-known candidate in mind.

Newsweek and other publications say Pelosi has been lobbying for Rep. Chet Edwards (D – Texas). The 56-year-old Edwards is a 9-term congressman representing a district in central Texas that includes President Bush’s ranch in Crawford.

In an interview Sunday, Pelosi said, “I didn't want to see a discussion of candidates for vice president without showing the House of Representatives… I just wanted people to be aware of the extraordinary credentials of Chet Edwards. And I hope he will be the nominee.”

Pelosi told ABC’s "This Week" that “for years, our colleagues have said to him, why don't you run for president? He is an extraordinarily talented person. He is a champion for veterans in the Congress. Under his leadership, we have passed, including just on Friday, the biggest increase in funding for veterans' health benefits and other benefits in the history of our country. “

Pelosi called him “talented:” and “principled.” Asked if she believed Edwards, not a household name around the country, had a chance to be picked, she said, “Well, I would certainly hope so. But, you know what? Senator Dodd, Senator Biden, Senator Hillary Clinton - there's such a great array of people from whom Senator Obama can choose. So, anyone of them, I'm fine with."

It's pretty bad when W has a higher approval rating than you do in Congress, Pelosi. Now sit down and shut up. I thought you were supposed to be on vacation anyways. It must be nice to be able to take a month off while people in this country struggle to pay bills. Nobody from the House is on the shortlist because none of you deserve it.

I think most Democrats wanted Obama/Edwards in 2008, but they were hoping for John, not Chet. Why won't John Edwards fight back against the tabloids? He's only making himself look guilty by staying silent on the issue.

Pelosi's thoughts are respected and honored by long-term democrats. I value her ability to help to unite the party. Until a final decision is made, all should be consider.

Hillary Clinton will get my write-in vote in November and Nancy Pelosi should know better than to promote ANOTHER male into the power chamber. Here we go again. It's been more than 200 years and these power hoarders continue to exclude competent women leaders. Nancy Pelsoi is nothing more than a good ole boy and Obama is nothing more than an affirmative action candidate.

    Ms. Pelosi,
Please stay in your own shop, and help Hillary help the Senate and the rest of the country. No more help from you; we'll call you once your inaction aftereffects have been overcome.

Although I do not know this guy, she does have a point about looking at the House of Reps for a running mate. In my opinion, the Senate needs to keep all of it's numbers.

Brad & the like need a course in Government 101. Pelosi & the rest of the democrats in the House are not to blame for the the inaction in Congress. Two basic causes of the legislative gridlock: 1) We have a mixed government presently: One party controls Congress, the other controls the executive branch. If they have different policy agendas or see themselves constantly engaged in political rivalry , not much is going to get done. 2) George Bush is the biggest enemy of bipartisanship I can remember & he holds most of the cards when it comes to legislative action. He is also responsible for the atmosphere of distrust that exists amongst our legislative leaders & representatives.

justsaynodeal... um, you vote for McCain and you vote for stupidity.

I am sick of everyone blaming Pelosi for stuff. The Republicans in congress have blocked everything and Bush has vetoed any kind of progress the congress could have made. It's not the dems fault.

My only beef is they didn't hold impeachment hearings on Bush and Cheney. That's where I have a beef with them.

I hope they get rid of Pelosi after the election, she is such a liar and a fake, she said so many times on national TV that it will be unfair to the nominee if one should suggest to them to pick a VP, so why is she sugesting now for Obama? she also said on national TV that Hilary will not be a good VP for Obama , that she thinks they will not be good together, then she lied on the Today Show and denied she said that ,also in the View she denied it again, that woman is such a flip flop and a air head, how on earth was she elected as speaker in the house? they better get rid of her real soon, she is very bad for the democratic party, I hope she reads this message, and know she is not a favorite person in america.
