Kennedy was released from the hospital in May

BOSTON (AP) — Sen. Edward Kennedy will have a presence at the Democratic National Convention even if he can't make it to Denver.

A Kennedy spokeswoman said Monday that the Massachusetts senator taped a five-minute video over the weekend to air during the party gathering at the end of the month. Crews visited his home on Cape Cod.

Kennedy suffered a seizure at his Hyannis Port house on May 17 and was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. He underwent surgery and recently completed a six-week course of chemotherapy and radiation.

Kennedy made a surprise visit to the Senate floor in July to cast a Medicare vote, but his immune system remains repressed and it's unclear if he can attend a large public event like the convention.

Senator Kennedy,

I'll never forget that you spoke at my brother's high school graduation in Maryland, back in '87. You and your family are an inspiration of hope and change for all of us. Forget the detractors, 'cause there are plenty of people in this country rooting for you.

Cathie Brown   August 4th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

Senator Kennedy, my thoughts and prayers are with you. We'll need you back in the Senate in September! My family and I are so grateful to you for all you've done for the nation.

Sincerely,
Cathie Brown

"Nancy"… none of the Kennedys ever worked and don't know the meaning of the word "labor!" They made their wealth running bootleg liquor from Canada, in case you are too young and stupid to know history.

Lawrence - Virginia Beach, VA   August 4th, 2008 2:24 pm ET

Last but not least all McCain supporters, of age need to serve in the military and fight in the Middle East. If you're too old then your child should have to serve. If this were the case I'd bet many of these so-called patriots would no longer support McCain.

Keyyy WI,

Your tone is very disturbing. How do you knwo how good a president Obama will be?

I don't know how good a president McCain will be, for all we know he could be a horrible president. All indications point to that. Let's face it, he just won't have the stamina to be president in a few years, if not already. So don't give me the h.s. about who holds a candle to whom…

Stuff it Chuck.
Bush was unaware that Katrina hit the coast and obviously was not going to go to New Orleans during the storm. The victims of Katrina were not prepared and we can't just give them everything they need, if they had had insurance, like smart people, they wouldn't have to be given everything.

Really Brooklyn, and what exactly are the Republicans doing?
Coffee and tea at somebody's Aunts house?

Our nation is truly in the dumps because of the current administration's philosophy of greed, ignorance, and lies. The fact is that Barack is our best hope at STARTING to fix things.

Not may God Bless you Senator, but may God forgive you for the lost of a young woman's life so many years ago. Only a Kennedy could have escaped a certain manslaughter charge from that terrible incident. A nation doesn't forget, only God can forgive.

I wonder if the republican convention will have the 20,000 - 30,000 protestors that are already lined up to show up at the democratic convention??

And that is just 1 group of protesters of which I am happy to say that I am one.

Ken Pittsburgh   August 4th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

At least kenndy will see fit to show up at the convention there aare any number of republican s who plan to sit out their own convention.

Jeff   August 4th, 2008 1:48 pm ET

Oh brother. I am a democrat, but I have seen enough of Ted Kennedy to last a lifetime. He threw his support behind Obama not for any honorable reason. He threw his support behind Obama because he hates Hillary Clinton and would do anything to defeat her.

Raymond Duke   August 4th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

That is so sad. The old liberal lion of the senate will not be their to see the one him , Pelosio , Reed and the rest of the democrat party helped select for all of us democrats. Personally I will not be watching him or the democrat convention. All you liberal democrats worried about John McCains age and reffering to him as senile but you never mention the fact that Kennedy is an Alcoholic and is nearly as old as John McCain. Well I did not care for his brother who was president and I have no use for Ted Kennedy either. I feel sorry for his health problems and I wish that he could have retired healthy and got out of politics. People including him and the ones mention above or what is wrong with America.

ordinary people aren't allowed into the convention. Only will be able to buy tickets to attend B. Husseins speech in the Field.
Thats ok. They will have enough screechers any way, they don't need Kennedys bellowing.
B. Hussein would never hold a candle to JFK. In the first place look at the family back ground. You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

In spite of Ted's misc issues I would take him in a nano second over McSame.
His position on social issues are what the vast majority of the US population really wants. If we had secret ballots on a host of social issues the liberal positions would easily prevail. What folks say about social issues verbally is a lot different than how they would vote in a secret ballot on those issues.

Lets make a change in America, Vote Obama

DAVE   August 4th, 2008 1:24 pm ET

My comment is - why did you go against Hillary Clinton? Is it because she is a women and qualified? I respected the Kennedy's but not anymore. What you did was a disservice to the 18 million that voted for Hillary.

Youkiddingme?, I'd just like to point out that it's absolutely absurb for you to think that God won't cure his cancer. No human can possibly understand how God operates fully. All we can do is pray that God gives the Doctors the wisdom to cure his cancer.

And to some of the other bloggers, Why is it that Obama's race has to be the main issue in the campaign? Why can' the just be a viable candidate. I'm sick and tired of mainstream America, making it a handicap to be African American. Every thing he says, they make a big issue out of it. He's not the first politician to lie and he won't be the last but I guess his lies are more of a captial offense becuase he's african american.

First parading Caroline Kennedy around like a show dog, and now making Ted tape a greeting for the convention in case the unthinkable happens before that.

How pathetic and retro of Obama to continually try to cast himself as Camelot 2008. Talk about yesterday's news.

The DEMS are doomed until you apologize for trashing Hillary and all her supporters.

BY the hate of the Democratic party and its leaders and the DNC was this party divided.

A house divided can not stand.

The sabotage of Hillary was intentional, ugly and vitriolic.

1. Painting her and Bill as racists after SC.
2. Saying that just by running Hillary was damaging Obama's chances- wasn't the reverse JUST as true?
3. The ridiculous allegations of feeling "entitled to the throne"
4. Calling on Hill to drop out
5. Preventing Hill from taking it to the convention
6. The Fl and Mi fiasco and its handling.
7. Edwards piling on to create an illusion of strength for Obama when his momentum was on the decline and to humiliate and sabotage Hillary during the time her momentum was in full swing.
8. Encouraging ACTUAL sexism while denouncing imagined/perceived racism.
9. Dismissing all of Hillary's supporters as inconsequential.
10. Fixing the primary for Obama

Apologize to Bill and Hill for pretending that they were racists.

Apologize to Hill for the nasty, horrible sexist treatment.

Apologize to Hillary for dragging her down just to boost Obama.

Apologize to Hill for the swiftboat attacks the DNC hit her with.

Phantom of the Oprah   August 4th, 2008 12:20 pm ET

Make sure you document the way Obama and his dirty campaign labeled Bill Clinton as a racist in SC….
That was so fun to watch… really…all the AAs advancing Obama - and justifying their own racism of voting for Obama based on race only - by pretending to be offended by pretending they thought Bill and Hill were racists.

And make sure you document how Obama trashed the Clinton presidency… and mocked Hill with his stupid Annie Oakley act and ow he brushed millions of democrats off his shoulder along with Hillary.
Those were such cute moments.

And the wonderful things YOU democrats- Richardson et al said about the Clintons. That negativity just to decry negativity- and all that hate just to install Obama.

Obama, AAs, Obama's rabid supporters, Obama's campaign and the biased media are all responsible for losing this election for the democrats.

Jordan NC, that story and his new "repositioning" on oil drilling will be buried right along with the Tony Rezco and William Ayers stories.

The chosen one can't do anything wrong, even when he makes a racist remark pointed towards McCain and his campaign, he has his campaign leader say they are playing the race card and incredibly the media "explains what he meant".

Ted "the swimmer" Kennedy, I sleep well knowing that someday, MaryJo and you will meet again and she can slap you right in your fat socialist face, then you can go down to your nice "warm" place with your Father at your side.

Chris - Phoenix   August 4th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

This is a story about Ted Kennedy. The Republican smear voices (see: BROOKLYN) and the Hillary supporter (who is probably also a Republican just trying to cause trouble) need to realize that this is why you didn't win and won't win.

This is why nothing has been accomplished in Washington for decades, because self-serving voices that want attention for themselves and refuse to even honor a man fighting for his life, are the reason that Americans are rejecting the divisive politics and looking for hope.

Get well Ted. Your voice is always welcome.

He used to be one of my favorites.. The only night that I will listen will be t Hillary's Tuesday night and we will be taping it for our young granddaughters since their great great grandmother was active in the women right to vote movement. Of course it will be hard to watch with 2 face Pelosi, McCaskill on stage with her. If President Clinton speaks that will be tape too. The rest of it does not matter anymore.

Jamar in MA   August 4th, 2008 11:53 am ET

Jamar in MA   August 4th, 2008 11:50 am ET

As a matter of fact, his name wasn't even on the ballot in Michigan!!! So the only fair way would have been to do another, entirely new revote.

Jamar in MA   August 4th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Okay you need to shut up about bringing Hillary back. It's done and over with. As a matter of fact, if it were the other way around she'd try to stall a full vote from both states and you know it! Would you want this to happen if Obama was in her place and needed those votes?

Hillary also had her fair share of being paid off not to go forward with her health care plan long ago..

many of our presidents had little experience themselves, and turned out to be great leaders…

so how about you, Jordan, not make excuses for, and not have show your resentment towards Obama. He was a lot more fair during the primary, more than she ever was towards him.

Dnkyo, RI   August 4th, 2008 11:46 am ET

I think it is very stupid for someone as Herman in LA, to still be hanging on the past. It just show that someone people think the canidate is entitled to the Presidency through some kind of inheritance.

Obama did not make the rules to begin with, it was the DNC. Secondly Hillary like other canidates at the time accepted it. So stop been a whinner grow up and move on it is politics. I think in the spirit of party unity, Obama is right to call for the full seating of the Michigan and Florida delegates it just make sense.

Concluding, the are serious problems facing our country, and this is the year that we democrats can take back this nation and get serious about making people life better than what have been given to us these last seven years. This is what people are concern about and hoping something can be done.

johnetta   August 4th, 2008 11:46 am ET

finally a comment section not closed. im glad senator kennedy is well enough to video tape for dnc convention.this was made possible by our non government controlled healthcare system where even though he is rich the care he recieved is also offered to ordinary citizens of ordinary means.this is not true with other systems.much is made of the uninsureds but how many of them are by choice verses beyond individual control.dont give up your health rights or those of your parents or children.you as an individual must stay in control and not government beauracrats.also mccain is a naval adecamy graduate not high school only. hannity and rush do not speak for rnc or mccain unlike moveon and the dnc/dem. cabdidates.carol rove is not involved in this election but john dean is.

Can any of you Clinton lackeys explain to me why Bill Clinton responded to a reporters question about He and Hillary ganging up on Obama with" Jesse Jackson won in South Carolina". He didn't even answer the reporter's question, yet the media almost never shows the reporter asking the question. This is why his reply was taking as being racist. He came out of left field with his response. Now i dont believe Bill is a racist. He is just a calculating, ruthless, politician. My advice for Bill is "you've made your bed, now you've got to sleep in it".

Senator OBAMA 50 million convention for 76,000 low and middle income Americans is paid for by "WE THE PEOPLE", he can used that money for whatever that translate into a V for V-DAY in November. I donate $25. of my hard earned paycheck twice per month and another $35. to the DNC. It is time to take America back. Yes, we can and We WILL! It is the change AMERICA and the world needs right now! I am so happy that he does not take lobbyist money, nor changed his values, thics or integrity like John McCain is doing. The question now beciomes, "who is the real John McCain?", the man of 2000 or the man of 1983, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90…you get the picture. There is so much RAW information about McCain out there, yet the MSM ISN'T DOING ITS JOB; YET I do have faith and HOPE that they will see the light on September 5th and the ads will begin to pour forth from OBAMA, the DNC and the PAC to attack McCain for his voting record of doing nothing. Joe Lieberman will be McCain VP also and oh, it will be so funny. There is allot of information available from CT, that is why he lost his his election there in 2006 AND RUN AS A CLOSET REPUBLICAN. McCain-Liberman is a oneway ticket to HELL!

I'm looking forward to this Convention, and to hear Senator Ted Kennedy speak.

I'm happy to hear that he is feeling much better.

Desmond Brennan   August 4th, 2008 11:30 am ET

I know his immune system is suppressed but this convention was going to be his last big public hurrah anyway. The convention organisers need to look at imaginative efforts to allow him be present:

E.g. strong , directional air conditioning around the podium that creates an effect similar to "positive pressure" … strong cleansing regime (chlorine , iodine) around the podium area … enhanced personal hygiene for all close to him (literally clean out their noses & mouths) - etc.

These and other actions could be performed discreetly and relatively easily and would make his environment as sterile as his home.

It's an effort worth making

God bless you, Ted Kennedy. You are remarkable and truly a friend of the average Americans. Get well and keep a prayer too, so we can elect an inspirational leader (Obama) like you.

C!   August 4th, 2008 11:25 am ET

OBAMA `08!!

MD   August 4th, 2008 11:23 am ET

BROOKLYN obviously does not inderstand the difference between "politics as usual" and upholding tradition.

Political conventions do cost a lot, but they also generate a lot of jobs and revenue.

Now what I think should be banned is these silly political ads.

Obama supporter: Bipartisan Intelligence in Gov't   August 4th, 2008 11:20 am ET

A great man who has consistently fought for the middle and lower economic sectors of society.

My prayers and respect are with you Senator Kennedy.

Pedro Rebolledo   August 4th, 2008 11:19 am ET

It's true that conventions cost money, but that, I think, is the only way to satisfy a legal requirement concerning the necessary steps to an election. In that sense, no one can say that a given nominee is lying.

Doyle - MI   August 4th, 2008 11:18 am ET

Just want to wish Senator Kennedy well wishes to him and his family.

voter   August 4th, 2008 11:18 am ET

Thank you Sen. Kennedy for the tape message and for all of the hardwork in the senate. Get well soon. we need you.

ch   August 4th, 2008 11:17 am ET

Too bad his state of MA went for Hillary over Obama by 15 points despite his endorsement! And Kerry's….

Hillary 2012!

Willow, from Iowa   August 4th, 2008 11:15 am ET

He's kind of the grandpa of the Democrats. I wish him well. I think its great that he's taped a speech for the convention.

Paula Diane   August 4th, 2008 11:14 am ET

What a brave man, I wish him well and I pray he hangs in to see victory for Barack. Teddy Kennedy is a wonderful man. God Bless.

Herman in LA   August 4th, 2008 11:14 am ET

Good for you Teddy…

"Obama calls for giving 'full vote' to Michigan, Florida delegates"

WHY IS THIS NOT THE TOP STORY?

WHY WAS COMMENTS CLOSED SO EARLY FOR THAT STORY?

WHY WAS THE NEWS RELEASED BY THE DNC ON A SUNDAY?

THESE ARE THE IMPORTANT QUESTIONS.

OBAMA STOLE THE NOMINATION AND HE SHOULDN'T EVEN BE HERE RIGHT NOW. A LOT OF THINGS COULD HAVE HAPPENED HAD ALL VOTES AND DELEGATES BEEN COUNTED IN MICHIGAN AND FLORIDA BUT THE PRESS IS JUST HAPPY TO TREAT THIS AS ANOTHER STORY. FOR ONE,

WHY DID OBAMA GO AGAINST FULL REPRESENTATION BEFORE? WHY WAS IT SO CRITICAL BACK THEN THAT THAT HAPPENED?

OBAMA IS PLAYING POLITICS AND THE PUBLIC AND MEDIA IS JUST LETTING IT SLIDE. IF HE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE HIS WORD, WHAT DOES HE HAVE? HE HAS GOT NO EXPERIENCE. AND PARIS IS MORE OF A WASHINGTON OUTSIDER THAN OBAMA, WHY DON'T WE ELECT HER? THIS IS RIDICULOUS.

BRING HILLARY BACK!!!

PUMA 4 HILL   August 4th, 2008 11:10 am ET

This is the LAST man I want to listen to. Obama's thugs and cult followers were so against "the old Washington".. somehow they missed the boat that this guy represents the fossil of the Democratic party. The Clintons are babies compared to this guy.

Rachelraye- MD   August 4th, 2008 11:10 am ET

Good for you Senator Kennedy may God continue to bless you and make you stronger.

karen-phoenix   August 4th, 2008 11:09 am ET

Bless you Senator Kennedy. DO get well very soon!!!

Junior   August 4th, 2008 11:07 am ET

I wish him all the best, stay strong and keep the faith.

Scotty   August 4th, 2008 11:04 am ET

Brooklyn, do you really think all that happens at a convention is the announcement of a VP? Hello………… another misleading lie, drawing attention away from the issues, but sorry, that's the only thing Republicans can do this year because they know they can't win on the issues! Thank you Senator Kennedy for your remarkable contributions to our country over the years.

judyc   August 4th, 2008 11:04 am ET

Hey Brooklyn,

How much are the Republicans spending on their convention?

Wisconsin Vet   August 4th, 2008 11:04 am ET

Ted is the benchmark other in the Senator need to strive for.

proud army and navy mom   August 4th, 2008 11:04 am ET

Brooklyn:

what you just blogged makes no sense. To have a democratic convention is a example of promises and lies???

There are other things that goes on at the convention other than formally presenting the nominee. Have you ever been to one or watched one on tv?

I suppose that the repugs should not have one as well because it's waste of money and time or is it just Sen. Obama you are hating on?….

Chuck, Euigene Oregon.   August 4th, 2008 11:04 am ET

Just a wish Senator Kennedy the best comment.

Matthew M - Saint Louis   August 4th, 2008 11:03 am ET

I am so glad to see the race tightening. Obama is all style, no substance…and the American public are slowly and surely starting to see it. I am an independent voter, and I am voting McCain more as an anti-Obama vote. Because he is definately the lesser of the two evils. Both still pander to their party lines and "change" is something we will not see until an independent is elected president.

susie   August 4th, 2008 11:02 am ET

Ted Kennedy you should be ashamed of yourself for shoving Obama down our throats. All he does is flip-flop, he split the democratic party up, he has anti-American friends that he stands by until he has to throw them under the bus.

Mslola   August 4th, 2008 11:02 am ET

God bless you Senator Kennedy. We need you back on the Senate floor. Thank you for the tape. Looking forward to the convention

William, from Cali!   August 4th, 2008 11:00 am ET

Ted Kennedy needs to retire from office, period!!! And he's not alone!

gina simpson   August 4th, 2008 10:59 am ET

I wish Senator Kennedy the Best. I hope to see him at the Convention….but if he cannot make it personally…..then it will be nice to have the video.

Kennedy works hard for this Country and for his Party and his presence at the Convention (one way or the other) is a must.

Get Well soon, Senator…..America needs you back in the Senate!!!

Tom   August 4th, 2008 10:57 am ET

For American Workers wages have gone down since 1970 which is soon after Ted Kennedy pushed the 1965 Hart-Celler Immigration Act through Congress. This simple law pushed millions of Americans into poverty and kept many others from escaping it and yet Ted Kennedy is honored as a hero. How Ironic.

williefloyd   August 4th, 2008 10:57 am ET

God bless you and thank you for your many contributions to our country. Take care of yourself and unless your Dr. says it's totally safe, don't jeopardize your healing process. We need you back!!

greenfun   August 4th, 2008 10:57 am ET

Good luck Ted.
Mccain is ahead in the Rasmussen poll today. It is only going to get worse because Pumas and Opumas are growing hourly.

Major Michael "C" Lorton, Virginia   August 4th, 2008 10:56 am ET

Continue success in your recovery Senator Kennedy. Look to your health; and if you have it, praise God and value it next to a good conscience; for health is the second blessing that money cannot buy; therefore value it, and be thankful for it.

Nancy, SD   August 4th, 2008 10:55 am ET

Boy is he a trooper. Thank you Senator Kennedy, get well soon and come back to take your place as one of the great leaders of the Senate.

We love you!

Olayemi,Lagos-NIGERIA   August 4th, 2008 10:53 am ET

you may not cross over to the promised land but I bet you have seen a vision of it-a united, lovable and morally upright country. Your uncommon courage to espouse change will fire-up minds of generations yet unborn.

Get well soon Sen Kennedy

BWM   August 4th, 2008 10:52 am ET

Senator Kennedy, you are the best! It is my prayer that you will continue to remain strong. Hopefully, you will be able to witness history made this year. I've always loved your family and what you stood for.

@Brooklyn   August 4th, 2008 10:51 am ET

You must be a comment troll for the McCain campaign. Too bad no one cares. Get better Ted.

I wonder if he will address his blocking of the wind farm in his home state. Apparently the Democrats are against any solution to our Energy Crisis.

FAYE MOGHTADER   August 4th, 2008 10:50 am ET

SENATOR KENNEDYS TAPED MESSAGE WILL BE RECEIVE VERY WARMLEY AT THE CONVENTION .HE HAS A AN ICONIC PRESENCE
IN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.I AM SO GRATEFUL FOR THIS .

I'd just like to point out the absolute absurdity of claiming "god" will cure his cancer. If a higher power really wanted to intervene, wouldn't he just have prevented the cancer in the first place?

Let's just hope that science, not superstition, kills off Kennedy's cancer.

Chuck, Montgomery, AL   August 4th, 2008 10:48 am ET

Happy Birthday Sen. Obama !!!!

Anxiously await the viewing of Kennedy's tape at the convention.

By the way - In 2005 McCain celebrated his birthday during Hurrican Katrina while our government celebrated with him and ignored the victims on the Gulf Coast. Good Job Brownie - HA

GB   August 4th, 2008 10:47 am ET

Kennedy is politics as usual and Obama is trying to get away from that?

va   August 4th, 2008 10:45 am ET

Senator Obama is doing the convention that way because it allows regular people like you and I to attend the convention. Usually conventions are only for party loyalist, and delgates. Senator Obama knows who brought him this far. We the people, supported him. so why not give back at this time. IT IS HISTORY.

NotFallingInLine.org   August 4th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Kennedy should be too ashamed of himself to leave his manor. His constituents must be beyond angry.

Darragh Murphy is no better than Barack Obama. She should be ashamed of herself too for abusing the members of her PAC.

Are Pumas not better than the mindless Obamabots whom they oppose so strongly?

After all they've done, are Pumas really nothing more than mindless Pumabots?

You decide.

Ramblings from a lunatic. I hope Kennedy gets well, but his politics are just to the left of Fidel.

NoMcSame(NoMrBurns)   August 4th, 2008 10:40 am ET

I wish he was in better shape to come out and speak up to help Obama win the White House. The others are no help thats for sure. The republicans are making a fun little game out of this thing and they are sitting on their hands trying to play nice guy. Ask John Kerry where that kind of thinking go him.

Teddy Kennedy, God bless you.

nancy   August 4th, 2008 10:34 am ET

Hang in there, Senator Kennedy. Hopefully, you will get to see the fruits of your labor.

Cynthia   August 4th, 2008 10:34 am ET

I think it was great that he taped a message to be played at the Convention. He should not put his health in jeopardy by attending the Convention. We need him healthy and able to return to the Senate.

BROOKLYN   August 4th, 2008 10:32 am ET

If Senator Obama really wanted no "politics as usual" in Washington then they would not be holding a convention to tell us who the nominee is at a cost of $50 million dollars… We know how the nominee is.

This is the perfect example of the next four years of promise and lies.
