The McCain campaign gave reporters this tire gauge Monday.
The McCain campaign gave reporters this tire gauge Monday.

PHILADELPHIA (CNN) – Mark Salter, a top adviser to John McCain, gleefully distributed tire pressure gauges to McCain’s traveling press corps on Monday morning, a sight gag meant to mock Barack Obama’s remark last week that “making sure your tires are properly inflated” could help conserve gasoline.

Before departing for Pennsylvania, Salter told the press on board McCain’s plane that campaign staffers had brought along copies of Obama’s energy plan for reporters to study during the trip. After takeoff, Salter re-emerged with his punch line, passing out the pressure gauges reading “Obama’s Energy Plan” to the journalists on the flight.

The Republican National Committee said McCain supporters in Michigan were planning to distribute the same gauges at Obama’s energy speech in Lansing today. McCain's campaign manager Rick Davis also e-mailed supporters, offering a tire pressure gauge in exchange for a donation of $25 or more.

Last month, McCain's campaign also gave reporters covering the presumptive Republican nominee as Barack Obama's traveling press pool traveled overseas with the Illinois Democrat a fake European press pass.

Earlier: McCain press passes go continental

The pass featured a shot of the Statue of Liberty in front of an American flag, and the words: "McCain Press Corps/JV Squad/Left Behind To Report in America." The back had a picture of a man sporting a beret and a neck scarf, standing in front of a silhouette of the Eiffel Tower and pouring a glass of wine.

UPDATE: The Obama campaign points out that McCain backers like Florida Gov. Charlie Crist and California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as NASCAR, have promoted good tire maintenance as a way to manage fuel consumption.

Spoiled, sophomoric wannabes. Cocky, frat boy behavior in the style of George W. Bush. It really is obnoxious … and ineffective. Makes me want to put 'em all in the time-out chair, while the rest of us grown ups put this country back on track.

CAN WE USE A TIRE GAUGE ON McCAIN TO MEASURE HOW MUCH HOT AIR HE HAS . I KNOW HE'S FULL OF IT, ALSO HE IS FULL OF SOMETHING ELSE, YOU KNOW WHAT THAT IS.

some guy in New Hampshire   August 4th, 2008 11:48 am ET

Yes, making sure your tires are properly inflated can improve your mileage and save you money. Ridiculing this idea is funny how? If this is what McCain considers presidential behavior, and this is the quality of advisors he appoints, I'm voting for Obama.

Isn't funny that those who actually USE McCain's tire guages, will end up saving more money at the end of this year than any "gas tax holiday" or expanded drilling combined? We should thank McCain for finally doing something that helps anyone other than Big Oil!

Mike - Texas   August 4th, 2008 11:48 am ET

Inflating the tires will help a little, but not to the extent that Obama claims.

Maybe Obama can just blow on it, he is full of HOT air anyway.

Well, I gave McCain my last dollar. No more contributions from me or my husband. This is pathetic, not funny, and immature. I thought McCain was supposed to be better than this. I have donated money to McCain every month, up until now. I am done with his campaign and will be voting for either a third party or Obama. McCain is not the man he had all of us believe.

It really is pitiful, it seems the only thing the replicans and McCain camp want to do is mock Obama. Once again, the jealousy and pre-occupation with Obama is obvious.

I would very much like McCain folks to folcus ont heir own issues and ways to improve the country instead of putting down another…gheeez!

Lacy   August 4th, 2008 11:46 am ET

Does McCain even want the job anymore? Or is he deliberately sabotaging his own campaign?

This guy (McCain) spends so much time talking about experience making him so much better, while wanting to inject humor into the process. McCain, the direction of this country is an extremely serious matter, not to be taken lightly!

It is certainly not a place for elementary school name calling and practical jokes. All you McCain supporters can keep on laughing if he gets elected, keep on laughing all the way to the un-employment office.

Beverly, NYC   August 4th, 2008 11:46 am ET

My friend how about acting your AGE not your shoe size. I expect small minded juvenile behavior from the younger candidate not the older stateman's war hero. Is this what the American public can expect if you're elected, no plans, lots of puns, and a let them eat cake attitude? Thank for showing your true colors McCain. Bush dances in the rose garden while you laugh at your opponent. You really should work on the weekends, I would hate to see what you do on Monday's in the white house.

It is time for Mr.Mccain to stop TRYING TO BE FUNNY , CRACK JOKES. OR POKE FUN AT EVERY THING. It is time for him to get to the real issues that we facing today. We want to see real change in the direction the country is going in for a better future for all us.Mr. McCain put it out there , we are waiting to hear it.

R.I.F.   August 4th, 2008 11:46 am ET

I keep hearing McCain and some pundits say that Obama needs to "lighten" up and that McCain is just bringing "humor" to the campaign. Last time I checked this country was facing some of the toughest times in decades. Everyone likes a little humor but we need someone who is serious about trying to get this country headed back in the right direction and not a jokester. Bush had a sense of humor and was the "frat boy" that everyone would like to have a beer with and look where that's gotten us. This tire pressue "joke" just shows just how out of touch McCain is. Of course he doesn't want us to conservere more energy because it would drive down the record profits of his oil buddies.

Mr. Aiken   August 4th, 2008 11:45 am ET

Why is the news always talking about McCain's distractions from the real issues. In 2001 Sen. McCain went on David Letterman and said that the Anthrax form America came from Iraq. Is no one concerned that our maybe future president used a serious threat to promote a war. A threat that has nothing to do with Iraq.

Bob   August 4th, 2008 11:45 am ET

McCain is getting under my skin. Once again Obama says something truthful, factual and right on the money, and McCain makes fun of it. It's the Rove way, I hope it doesn't become the American way.

Max   August 4th, 2008 11:45 am ET

I don't get the joke. It IS a way to increase gas mileage. I agree that it's a great idea to point out the little things that EVERYONE can do to help the cause, and if everyone in the country participated, it could make a difference in overall consumption. These sniveling little attacks reek of arrogance on McCain's part (which is ironic because that's the label that Obama's somehow stuck with). I really hope that the American people will be smart enough this time around to see through this nonsense. The negative stragedy didn't end up working out for Clinton, so maybe there is some hope.

John B. From New Hampshire   August 4th, 2008 11:44 am ET

it has actually been proven, that properly inflated tires CAN conserve gas, unfortunately not many people know this. also not driving with your windows down will help by allowing the car to run with the maximum in aero-dynamics. A/C does not burn gas as people had thought, that is an urban legend! Why must mccain's camp mock obama's ideas. i'm sure more people would listen to him if he had osme of his own!! oh, that's right… he has the gas tax holiday… what a bunch of malarky

OBAMA '08… ideas, innovation, innitiative

Mike   August 4th, 2008 11:44 am ET

That is good… points out a huge problem in our country

Americans could save money if they were willing to maintain their cars properly…

When was the last time any of you checked your air pressure or rotated your tires with out the service guy telling you???

The post above was partially right… Obama is going to have a hard time telling people that they have to do things differently… he obviously has not gotten the memo that most of us are not going to change our behavior or habits!!!

It only takes a mortgage crisis, inflated gas prices, rising food costs, etc… for any of us to notice that there might be a problem… most of us just continue to pay as usual and keep on going!!!

My generation seems to believe that if you ignore the problem long enough it will just go away… instead of trying to fix it or take some sort of action!!

bernj   August 4th, 2008 11:44 am ET

Well…I mean…Obama is right. At least he offered a concrete idea that does in fact save energy. Not much granted but more than not doing nothing. And McCain…well…he offers…er…….let me see……er…..

MORE OF THE SAME

Adam   August 4th, 2008 11:44 am ET

I don't know what McCain's problem is. I don't know why he thinks this is "funny" or "humorous" at all. It just makes us look stupid. He is bad for our image around the world and he is apparently so far out of touch with reality that he doesn't know that proper inflation can give you an extra 5 mpg which is a HUGE savings when you multiply it by every single car on the road and every gallon of gas used by them. So McCain should just quit his pathetic attempt at humor now and leave the campaign to someone who is serious about helping America.

The ONLY way to help this country is for US as citizens to be willing to DO something to change. We can't wait for it to happen to us, because it won't. The only way change will come is if we make it happen. And it's time to make it happen.

Folks, Obama has no plan. His "inflate your tires" campaign, is just one more step in a much bigger plan to control everything you do, say and buy. As always with liberals, it's about central government control over what YOU do.

"What's that? You like McDonald's fries? Oh, no, we can't have that… we'll have to tax that for you."
"What's that? You like riding in a vehicle in which your knees AREN'T folded up to your ears, like a spider in a Matchbox car? Nope, no can do. That's not 'environmentally friendly.' We'll have to tax them out of the market."
"What's that? You like to drive where ever, when ever and however you choose? Nope, can't do that either… more taxes coming your way soon."
"What's that? You don't like swatting flies and sweating profusely in a mud hut? You can't simply just set your AC to a comfortable setting, you glutonous, greedy American!. We have to set it for you. How does "off" sound?"

GET USED TO IT FOLKS! Elect Obama and a huge Dem-Socialist majority and THIS is what you'll get…. not solutions to problems, just controls over your life.

MIA in Miami   August 4th, 2008 11:43 am ET

OBAMA IS RIGHT—-McCAIN IS DEAD WRONG. PROPER AIR PRESSURE IN YOUR TIRES NOT ONLY SAVES M.P.G. BUT IT ALSO EXTENDS THE LIFE OF YOUR TIRES.

McCAIN HAS LED A VERY SCHELTERED LIFE. McCAIN HAS NEVER HAD A JOB—HE HAS LIVED OFF THE GOVERNMENT SINCE THE DAY HE WAS BORN..

Steve   August 4th, 2008 11:42 am ET

So, obviously McCain excels at making snide remarks about others' plans, and his camp even spends hard-earned money on tire pressure gauges to mock Obama. And, to show the depths of your ignorance, you are mocking something (properly-inflated tires) which is a known mileage saver.

Where, I ask you John, is YOUR plan? Not just drill, drill, drill. How about a comprehensive plan that doesn't pander to the oil companies?

Each time I think you can't go any lower, you do. I am not a big Obama fan, but I can tell you, whoever winds up running against you, John, will get my vote. You can keep your air pressure gauge, John. Based upon what you've said and done so far, I'm sure it is innacurate.

Cyrus - NY   August 4th, 2008 11:42 am ET

Mockery is what you do best Sen. McCain. I have been following your campaign very closely, and the things that come out of your mouth about energy, social security, health plan, national security, and other social issues, are simply terrifying. Don't you read? think for yourself? Critically analyze socio-economic policies and their implications? Oh..right…why would you need to read? You have the republican propaganda machine.

I tell you, the Republican propaganda machines are worse than those fundamentalist Mullahs in Iran, Iraq, and other conservative countries. They would do and say anything to keep their status quo. I personally don't find much difference between those mullahs and the republican leadership. They are psychological terrorists!

I ask again - and again, and again - what is McCain's position on Bush's doctrine of preemption?

Mad   August 4th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Atleast McCain has his own plans for the off shore drilling
sure people are arguing that its not auto relief
but in 7 years the youth will be yelling at this youth for being brain dead for not doing so.

McCain is actually encourging people to help others save gas.

Obama's message: Change- change the gas prices so they get higher and higher while I make a speech about something and get voters!

MD for BaOb   August 4th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Obama heard McCain's criticism of him on international policy, and so went to Europe and the Middle East.
He should now follow McCain's lead again - and give out gauges of his own. Obama has said repeatedly that this campaign is not just about him, but about all Americans getting involved. He can further that message while mocking McCain's mockery by doing this.

As for those who say Obama uses other's policies and claims them as his own - of COURSE! Every politicians, every policy maker has policies made up of the ideas and opinions of those around them. They become their own. Clinton and Obama could both say "this is my policy on X" even if its the same thing - because that is their policy on X, or whatever the issue is. It doesnt matter how many or in what order those polcies came out. Obama has never said "I invented this policy" just that it is part of his platform.

Franky   August 4th, 2008 11:40 am ET

So, can anyone tell me what McCain is running on? Is he running to be the Jester-in-Chief? He really need to cut this crap out because his campaign hasn't done a single thing in the past 3 weeks that focus on issues that americans really care about. The only thing he has been doing is mocking and trying to bring Obama down because he has a vision of where he wants to lead us.

PS. It's great idea to make sure your tires are properly inflated to the proper P.S.I, should improve gas mileage, save gas and money.

McKeating 5 is at it again……more nonsense from an old windbag who can't put a decent campaign together. With all the money the RNC has–more than Obama, and they spend it all on gimmicks which will land them no where.

I can't wait for the debates, where Obama will tear McKeating 5 a new one. Also, don't try to fool us by wearing a wire like Bush did, I think they should be checked for earpieces and wires BEFORE they are allowed on the stage. John McCain is looking pretty ugly these days–not the kind of person I want to have represent me–I work to hard to see this country's name drug through the dirt again by the rest of the world for another 4 years.

Evidently, McCain's campaign thinks tire gauges is a good way to spend their supporters' money. They also feel that common sense coming from a presidential candidate should be mocked. Good to know.

charlie z   August 4th, 2008 11:39 am ET

obama is right about properly inflating your tires.. it will improve your gas mileage, and it'll probably save your more than any off-shore drilling plan, which won't realistically produce any oil until around 2030 and will only save the american consumer a few cents per gallon. seems that anyone who follows the news with a critical eye (like, perhaps a reporter??) should be aware of this already. how come this isn't mentioned in the above article?

I see many drivers with improperly inflated tires. Not only is it bad for fuel economy (even a 5% boost is a good thing), it is better for safety.

This just goes to show that Obama doesn't just understand what's wrong on the macro scale, he understands (literally!) the situation on the ground.

another way is to conserve.. this can be implement soon… one step is to maintain our car properly… why dont we ban all the drive throughs in our country.. I think it makes people lazy and burn more gas..

anyway conservation may not sound good to MCSHAME…

Justin Slayer   August 4th, 2008 11:34 am ET

John …

This is a real, tangible, immediate step that people can and should take that will have an impact on fuel economy.

By making fun of it, it show your sophomoric approach to LEADERSHP.

True the impact is small but combined with clean air filters driving 60 mph instead of 65, 70, 75, or 80 mph, drivers can have a real impact on how many gallons of gas we need. This is more relevant than your "psychological" , mind game solutions.

It is the fact that miles driven, and therefore gallons used, were reduced in June of 2008 as compared to June of 2007 that has reduced prices at the pump.

But these are simply the facts … you GOP'ers only want to wave your hands and deal in fluff, like one night in Paris.

William77   August 4th, 2008 11:34 am ET

I'm an Obama supporter and I really want one of these! I actually think they are an excellent way of talking to people about real ways they can improve their energy efficency and how Obama stands for a real, practical and sustained energy policy while McCain wants heal the proverbial heroin addict by shooting them up with more heroin. The Obama campaign should buy these in bulk for the McCain campian and give them away on the street. So, where can I get mine again?

Bradley   August 4th, 2008 11:33 am ET

McCain's attacks on Obama:
1. He's too popular
2. He made an oblique reference to his race.
3. He gives good advice to consumers.

While Barack is working to bring positive change to America, the Republicans are acting like children- the kind of bitter children who like to whine all time.

The GOP needs to grow up, and they'll have plenty of time pretty soon, because they are losing.

LS West Chester, PA   August 4th, 2008 11:33 am ET

the Republicans are so smug. Obama is just giving an easy tip to help people conserve on their day to day life…. it saves us money and conserves oil. I don't get why McCain wants to make a joke out of it…… other than they have nothing else to attack him about.

McCain supporter, now undecided   August 4th, 2008 11:33 am ET

Thats it, I'm sick of Mccain wasting his contributor's money that way. Unfortunately, I was one of those stupid enough to give money to McCain. But Obama is sure starting to look better. Much more professional and presidential than McCain. Its like McCain wants to lose this election.

You know, if the Republican party spent 1/10 of their energy on ACTUAL IDEAS rather than smart alec gimmicks and excuses, they might be taken somewhat seriously.

As it is, they are making fun of something car mechanics would tell you is TRUE. And with that, you can pretty see why the Republican party is completely, utterly, absolutely clueless in this day and age.

At least you do not see Obama handing out miniature oil derricks and gas pumps to his supporters now do you…

mccan't's juvenile antics   August 4th, 2008 11:31 am ET

these are the same people that mocked carter's ideas in the 70's. think how much progress toward energy independence would have been made in the last 30 years if we'd listend to Jimmy Carter all those years ago. But stupid bellitling jokes are a much better course of action, don't you agree? he may be in his seventies but older and wiser never applies to him. he acts like a seven year old playground bully.

Esther   August 4th, 2008 11:31 am ET

Seems McSame loves the statue of liberty - here is what the stupid bribed MSM has refused to dig up or report to the american people since McSame accused Obama of injecting race into the campaign by predicting that Republicans would try to scare people by reminding them that he "doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills." As Ben Smith reported in Politico on Aug. 1, a McCain ad back in June showed Obama's face replacing Ben Franklin's on a hundred dollar bill and the statue of liberty!

jamaal Die Hard Obama Supporter   August 4th, 2008 11:30 am ET

They are running a juvenile Campaign Obama was giving tips that will save gas and that was one of the tips another of the Tips is to keep you windows rolled up on the Highway. Mcshame you are a disappointment to this County and will never get elected to office the person that claims he has the most experience is the one that is acting chlidish go figure!

Nikki   August 4th, 2008 11:30 am ET

When will McCain stop talking about Obama and start talking about himself (and by that I don't mean his POW biography)? If Obama is out of the picture, what in the hell will McCain do as president? What are McCains policies to get our economy on the right track, lower the inflation of the dollar, reverse the mortgage crisis, restore America to its good name around the globe, put American on the track to become the world's leader in comprehensive energy reform, fix our infrastructure, lower gas prices and the resolve the illegal immigration problems. Vague and unsubstantiated remarks do not suffice. Also, it is inane for McCain to make this allegation about Obama's energy policy. As if Obama's entire energy policy hinges upon the resolution to properly inflate tires. How does McCain expect me to vote for him when he has yet to convey what he will do (in comprehensive terms) as president? When will someone call McCain's ads for what they are; blatent lies. This is silly season for McCain's campaign. Imagine what his presidency will be like.

Oh Really?   August 4th, 2008 11:30 am ET

Making sure your tires are properly inflated DOES get you better gas mileage. It sats so right there in the owner's manual.

What DOESN'T save me any money, however, is senator McCain's Jillion Dollar Battery plan. What a joke.

So mock away, John. I hope your dozens of supporters are actually smart enough to figure out how to use those tire guages; they can help us save 800,000 barrels of oil daily.

RC   August 4th, 2008 11:30 am ET

More childish games from the McCain camp.
A Made in China tire guage. Just another cheap trick.

Dee Tee Gee Arlington, TX   August 4th, 2008 11:30 am ET

Is this what the McCain camp has reduced itself to? Rather than offer legitimate solutions to the major problems in our society, they sit back & criticize everything Barack Obama says. And this is actually what some people are going to vote for? Are there really people in our society that can be that easily swayed? If you're an Obama backer & see the "Obama is a rock star" ad, you suddenly become a McCain backer? Are you kidding me? Is that all it takes to change your mind? I hope Obama just sticks to the issues & doesn't stoop down to this sorry method of campaigning. I just can't believe that people would rather hear negative campaigning than listen to possible solutions to the energy problems or a resolution to the war. First McCain whines like a baby about all the attention Obama is getting, & then tries to convince us that something's wrong with it. I don't buy it for a second but obviously some people are & that's a sad reflection on them. But I'm sure it's not about race, though. Not a chance.

Tracey   August 4th, 2008 11:30 am ET

Rick Warren is inviting Barack Obama to the obviously Republican Civil Forum because he knows no one would care if he had just invited McCain. So in order to get publicity, he invited Barack, knowing he wants to push Republican ideas.

Matt, Minneapolis, MN   August 4th, 2008 11:30 am ET

Lets sum it up….McCain has had an energy plan for the past year. Obama has finally come up with a crappy piecemeal plan.

Brian- Asking people to change isn't the issue, it's forcing them to change. And as for Chuck- Given the bigoted sentiment you just showed I'd be willing to bet that Obama and McCain have pretty much the same odds of making it to their 2nd inagural. There are just too many bigots who know how to shoot, and McCain is old. So pick which guy with a good chance of not making it you would like.

Dem's need a sense of humor, They cry and cry and cry when McCain uses humor to question Barack's credentials, but when Obama criticizes McCain with outright lies there's no cry for justice from the conservates.. Guess why, we have the ability to dicern truth from fiction, and Obama's vision is a dream world. Yes we can hope for change, but it will all be in Baracks head.

randy   August 4th, 2008 11:29 am ET

You cant make this stuff up, Obama is like a child with his flip flopping and when he comes up with an idea on his own this is it. To funny

Brian Seattle   August 4th, 2008 11:29 am ET

CNN when will you call Mcain's campaign out on all the twisting of words, shifting positions and outright lying attacks? If someone actually reads the entire comment they will see this is yet another cheap unimaginative stunt on the part of the GOP.
Honestly if Obama did or said half the gaffs McCain has he would have been driven out of town a long tie ago. I realize creating the illusion of a tight race is in your best business interest at some point you need to start hammering the McCain campaign equally.

Sarah L., Fayetteville, AR   August 4th, 2008 11:29 am ET

Properly inflated tires do help to improve gas mileage. There are lots of small things that drivers can do themselves to help conserve gas and save money. I don't really see why this is a point for criticism.

Nikki, Florida   August 4th, 2008 11:29 am ET

The reason John McCain continues to attack Obama is because he knows his own ideas are WEAK

Sherry, Atlanta   August 4th, 2008 11:29 am ET

Jatovi, NC   August 4th, 2008 11:28 am ET

this is cute. This is the best idea McCain has come up with. It' sad that his best ideas are only to mock someone. His Idea on getting off of oil, foreign and/or domestic, is to drill for more oil. Why not focus more on trying to utilize and improve renewable energy instead of you main stay being more drilling, which is something McCain was against until he got backing from oil companies.

ERICA, Ohio   August 4th, 2008 11:27 am ET

HA HA GET HIM MCCAIN CAMP. OBAMA AND THE DEMS HAVE KNOW REAL PLAN TO DEAL WITH OUR OIL PROBLEM. THEY WANT US TO INFLATE OUR TIRES, GET OIL CHANGES AND OH YEH THEY THINK TAXING THE OIL COMPANIES IS GONNA WORK TOO. NEWS FLASH JIMMY CARTER TRIED THIS DURING HIS FAILED PRESIDENCY AND IT DIDNT WORK! Terry   August 4th, 2008 11:26 am ET

Let's not forget that Joe Lieberman, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Florida Governor Charlie Crist have also encouraged drivers to keep tires inflated.

James in Ohio   August 4th, 2008 11:26 am ET

having properly inflated tires is one solution in the overall scheme of energy conservation and it can bring immediate effects. Why is McCain against conserving energy and for more drilling again?

FL4Obama   August 4th, 2008 11:23 am ET

Unfortunately, mockery seems to be the bulk of McCain's campaign. He disrespectfully used the Hiltons' daughter even after they donated the maximum amount to McCain. Mrs. Hilton recently noted how inappropriate and unpresidential that type of advertising is, yet McCain continues to use Paris Hilton as his campaign folly.

McCain has disrepectfully used blasphemy for political purposes. The new ad continues to illustrate how McCain has accepted the negativity used against him in 2000 by bringing the Bush/Rove team on board his campaign. This does not seem to be what most Americans would consider respectful campaigning, as McCain had promised.

I am voting for positive leadership in this election. Obama '08

Justin Cider   August 4th, 2008 11:22 am ET

Oh, and one more comment as a motorsport engineer I speak from experience. Obama is correct, it tire pressure does have a marked impact on fuel mileage. Ask yourself this, when was the last time you acutally checked your pressures? Many people don't realize that their tires can easily be 5, 10 or even 20 psi under inflated without looking like it. So, for fuel mileage and safety check your pressures.

Rodney Smith   August 4th, 2008 11:22 am ET

Jesse - San Antonio TX   August 4th, 2008 11:22 am ET

He was framed as one by Obama and His campaign to nullify what truths Bill was speaking about the qualifications of Obama. They tried to do it against McCain, then retracted their comments when the were caught.

Time and time again, if you say anything about Obama your deemed racist or ignorant on these boards.

The race card has been used as a guilt tool by the campaign to make you want to vote for Obama despite his lack of qualifications.

His feverent supporters (probably paid bloggers) are so disillusioned by this guys celebrity that anything he says or does is justified.

Like a bunch of sheep off to the slaughter.

And becuase America chose wrong in the primaries, we are going to have another Republican in the White House.

Eric   August 4th, 2008 11:21 am ET

Let's all remember what Lieberman said about inflated tires:

"Lieberman is on record going as far back as 2001 touting the significant role tire efficiency can play in any plan to reduce the nation's dependency on foreign oil. In a 2001 press release arguing against exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the Senator said: "Increasing the fuel efficiency of replacement tires for our cars to the same level as those sold on new automobiles will save drivers $90 in fuel costs over the lifetime of the tires and will save the U.S. more than 70 times the amount of oil we might find in the Refuge."

McCain' campaign, same old politics, same lack of vision.

Typical, grasping at straws and making personal attacks due to lack of substance. Sad really

Judy Paulson   August 4th, 2008 11:20 am ET

tire gauges!!! This is soooooooooo childish!!!!! Making fun and mocking every word that comes out of Obama's mouth. It make John Mccain look like he is the younger of the two men. In fact back to his days of being a child that doesn't know any better!!!!! I wish they could just lay out their plans for the future and let the people make their choice. This running down their opponent and only pointing out half truth and twisting words is unfair to the people who are trying to make the best choice for our country. It is so mind boggling!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It makes you NOT WANT TO VOTE AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still for Hill, but voting McCain!

REG in AZ   August 4th, 2008 11:19 am ET

To raise tire pressure a couple pds adds a mile or two, times millions of people doing it, is presented as just a small effort but none the less an effort in the right direction that makes a small positive difference. To open up off-shore drilling for some questionable small difference sometime in the future is also a small positive move, but when motivated by the desire to gain politically and to really patronize the oil companies, it isn't very impressive. The truth in both cases is that there isn't a lot gained but Obama presents it that way and McCain tries to get credit out of it. Take the deceptive rhetoric out of it and the truth is there.

Sam7   August 4th, 2008 11:19 am ET

Republicans for Obama   August 4th, 2008 11:18 am ET

Well, OBama wasn't saying that inflating our tires would solve the energy crises; so, once again his message was taken out of context.

The overall message is that we allllll have to take part, on some level in ameliorating the energy crises. We aren't as stupid as you think us to be, as you hope us to be.

Obama supporter: Bipartisan Intelligence in Gov't   August 4th, 2008 11:18 am ET

Having properly inflated tires will provide 10% better mileage on average.

Compare that to the 2.5 cent tax savings/gallon proposed by McCain. This "savings" would come directly out of money to pay for infrastructure which is not only necessary but also produces jobs.

10 gallons of gas @ would produce a savings of 25cents will inflating tires properly could save up to $4.00.

Reducing gas consumption is one way to not only save money but also a way to reduce the cost of oil due to reduced demand.

Tired of W, OH   August 4th, 2008 11:18 am ET

More childish crap by McLoser. It is a proven fact that proper tire inflation helps gas mileage. It is not Obama's energy plan, just something that Joe Schmoe can do immediately, like using CF bulbs.

I used to respect McCain as a moderate republican. Any lingering respect just vanished. The man is nothing more than the typical repub attack dog now with no solutions, just attacks. I'm sure he was "proud" of this little gimmick, just like he was "proud" of the celeb commercial that was chocked full of lies. Disgusting.

Point of view   August 4th, 2008 11:18 am ET

Proper tire inflation could help if you travel a great deal also slowing down some. What doesn't help is the mocking! Matter of fact i'm turned off by someone who does not promote any solutions. McCain would rather joke, laugh or mock what America is going through.

WELL IT IS NOT FUNNY THE SHAPE WE ARE IN! FACE REAL ISSUES. I DIDN'T LIKE THE JOKES ABOUT WOMEN OR BOMBING OTHER COUNTRIES AND I STILL DON'T.

Cut out all of the negative crap, and talk about the issues… John McCain probably does not have any issues… All he can do is bark at Obama…

king   August 4th, 2008 11:17 am ET

cnn at it again.no mention of the top mcsame supporters who support this idea.plus anyone who owns a car knows,if ur tires aren't properly inflated,u will burn more gas.

Mac's the Man   August 4th, 2008 11:16 am ET

Way to lighten the mood, great timing with all "The Chosen's" whining about race.

I'm sure Obama will flip flop after seeing this… Calling on all American's to deflate their tires.

I guess McCain does not realize that is going to take more than just drilling on our shorelines. McCain's campaign at this point should be ashamed at its tatics, and I can no longer support this canidate. I guess that leaves me Obama.

Truth Squad..?   August 4th, 2008 11:16 am ET

cynical much McChimpy? I'm not liking the whole bitter, pissed off old white guy with nothing good to say routine. McSame is all about doom, gloom, fear, war and no hope, unless we want to be happy as slaves to big business and big oil. Its time for change and a president that can turn us around from the last 8 years….

c4logic   August 4th, 2008 11:16 am ET

Keeping your tire pressure adjusted DOES lead to better gas mileage. It makes a difference of several miles to the gallon in my Civic Hybrid. If every car in America could go a couple of miles further on every gallon of gas–it would constitute a significance reduction in gas consumption. If everyone moved to fuel efficient cars, demaind could be greatly reduced. McCain, as usual, is misleading the public. It's what Republicans do best.

CB FOR OB   August 4th, 2008 11:16 am ET

Is this the same way you will deal with the leaders of the world? Make jokes of them. And you want to lead this country? Looks like the joke will be on you. Grow up little short man and stop wasting your donors money like your party wasted the country's funds.

By the way keeping your tiers at the proper air pressure and your window closed do increase your mileage. Even as a women I know this. You McCain is a complete idoit. Maybe if you rep. had put this much energy into solving problems maybe you would have had a better
rating for your party and the idoit Bush.

Andy J, NY   August 4th, 2008 11:16 am ET

Thats pretty funny.

Obama and McCain are still bums.

Dave   August 4th, 2008 11:15 am ET

Glad McCain isn't taking this whole running for president thing seriously. C'mon folks, he's treating this like it's a popularity contest at your local high school.
Lets crack some sight gags about what the other guy says!

Ignoring that Obama is right, and the effect that it would have on our country if everyone actually did all the little things that could help our environment, this is typical McCain style here.
Don't bother to offer up an original ideas, just mock and attack. Don't worry McCain…once Obama unveils his plan, you'll have a few days to copy it down and present it like your own…like every other idea you've had so far.

Ben   August 4th, 2008 11:15 am ET

What an utterly, inexcusably lame gag. Neither funny nor clever in the slightest, this ranks just below "BarakBook", which stands alone in its epic, Monolithic shadow of lameness.

Victoria   August 4th, 2008 11:15 am ET

Yuk, yuk, yuk….those Republican guys are so funny–NOT.

They are such babies. They can win a fair fight, they have to talk about their opponent on a personal level. It won't work and they won't win.

When is Karl Rove going to jail for crimes against Americans?
